Start Menu flickers/dissapears, apps. wont launch & minimised apps. wont maximise!!

Q: Start Menu flickers/dissapears, apps. wont launch & minimised apps. wont maximise!!

I am experiencing the following very strange intermittent problems and evil behavior in XP.

My Start Menu sometimes only appears for a split second when clicked and will not stay displayed. Also minimised apps. wont maximise and apps. and short cuts on the desktop wont launch when double left clicked and instead show properties as if they were right clicked!!

I have done the following to try and resolve these issues.

1. Updated from SP1 to SP 2 as well as all the security updates.

2. Ran Adaware and Spybot to find any unwelcome visitors. Adaware only found one minor issue.

3. Ran Symantec Antivirus which found and quarantined several viruses.

4. Ran WinDoctor which found and said it resolved quite a few issues.

This is really a pain as it makes the system virtually unusable except for when it is behaving which is rare.

Would be grateful for any suggestions, solutions, incantations or workarounds for this issue/s

Kind regards

Preferred Solution: Start Menu flickers/dissapears, apps. wont launch & minimised apps. wont maximise!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi binaryboy, Welcome to TSG!!

Please post a HJT log for us to review.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi there.
I can't launch any apps, the screen switches as if to launch an app but then nothing happens other than a blank icon in the taskbar.
The app screen will allow me to launch programs such as excel though as it ( I think) launches the installed program.
Any ideas?

A:Windows 8 metro apps wont launch

I have the same issue.

1. Fresh load on WIN 8 Pro, Metro/Modern apps like News, Mail, Financial, Photos, etc worked for about a day or so, then they won't open. Checked screen resolutoin, UAC, and I am not using any AV outside of Win Defender and Win Firewall.

2.Reloaded, complete reinstall of Win 8 Pro, same results, apps worked about a day or so then the regular Metro/Modern apps won't open.

3. Called MS Support and they suggested a WIN 8 Refresh. Did that (it took quite a while) and no change, same apps won't open.

MS has a problem that seems to be affecting a lot of folks, just not everyone is seems. They make us start with the Metro start page, you would think they would have gotten at least that right for everyone. Anyway, I supposedly will get a call from a level 2 support person tonight, but I am more apt I think to get the solution in Eight Forums someday.

So, yesterday I was trying to clear my computer of all viruses. So I decided to download avg antivirus 8.0 with firewall. It wouldn't install. then I tried avira antivirus (free version), and that wouldn't install either. So I tried the norton 2009 beta. it installed, but wouldn't finish as I apparently had another version of it on my computer. I finally decided not to try anymore and attempted to start up Firefox. It gave me the message "Windows can not access the specified file, path or device. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I then tried Opera. Same message. Opened up the control panel, to see if I could do something there. No dice. The only way I can access any application I through something that leads to it, like a link to a support page, or a music file to get to iTunes. Help?

it all worked fine until tonight, some of installed app just wont start, those default apps from Microsoft are still working fine though;
the problem is when you open the app, it quits to the sidebar while its still running on the background it just doesn't respond to anything until you close it, whats stranger is those apps running fine on my second monitor, when i drag them to my primary screen, they crash.
the only major thing I've done lately to my system was update my catalyst driver to the latest one, not sure if that is related; I've tried uninstall app and reinstall again, doesn't help, and I'm running default Windows Defender, nothing's been changed.

and i dont want to do a refresh just for that

any known problems with these programmes

A:windows 7 wont start after installing some apps

well the only thing that would stop it from loading would have to be loaded at startup so i assume that would eliminate firefox. I Don't recall any problems with live messenger or flash player (don't think it loads at startup) , I would suspect itunes possibly launcy(not familiar with that).

Newly installed apps. ot appearing in program menu unable to pin apps to start menu.

This happened to me previously and I could find no solution....I eventually created a new admin profile, where newly installed apps appeared in the program menu and I could pin apps tomthe start menu feom a desktopmshortxut etc.

I copied over my video docs pictures and music folders to the new profile. Now a few months later the same thing is happening again. I have created a new admin profile and it all, works fine there. I have searched on the internet and others have the same issue, but of course anything you search for always finds someone else with the same issue...

Hopefully someone can help me with this very annoying problem

A:Newly installed apps. ot appearing in program menu unable to pin apps

actually resolved the issue....I turned on windows update and did a massive update, the start menu looks a little different, maybe a different font, pinned items can only be mace smaller or bigger, used to be an option for long ( didnt use this anyway ) but new apps now showing and pin to start menu works.....so MS fixed it, there is some advantage to updating, have backed up with true image and turned off updating, will back up again before updating next time......the update didnt like GPU-Z and temoved it plus a few other apps and turned defender back on i think.......shutup-10 sorted all this out.....

Recently I am unable to open the Store app. After a small Windows 10 update, I have been unable to access the store. When I open the start menu and click the icon, it is unresponsive. Also when I go through my apps, it wont open when clicked there. I even had it pinned to my toolbar and the icon disappeared but left space and when I clicked there, I got an error message. Also, as I was typing this, my toolbar began being difficult. Certain things like the start icon, the calculator icon, or the internet explorer icon wont open when clicked. But the google chrome and the file explorer icons work well. I am not sure if there is a way for me to update the Store app or get it to launch through a browser or do I have to wait till another Windows 10 update to fix my problem.

Thank you for any advice or help in advance.

Today I noticed that I could not open my start menu with neither the windows button, ctrl + esc, or a click of the mouse. I've also had a problem the last couple of days saving/opening files in one of the programs I used to make music. I tried to go into safe mode to do system restore, but the safe mode didn't boot. It scrolled all the system files on the screen but then just stopped and nothing happened.

So, I tried the other option (forget what it's called) that lets you perform various other system restoration tasks. I brought up the system restore screen from there, but got an error that said something about corrupt files so it could not perform the restore. I checked again, and all my restore points had been deleted.

Lastly, when I click computer, all the drives are blank with no names beside them, only the icons. I can still click them and they seem to be functioning normally, so I don't know if there is a relation to this. I don't know if some registry files were deleted or if there is some other problem. I didn't notice the start menu/safe mode/blank icon issues until I just recently installed the latest windows update.

Sorry if this seemed a little long winded, but I would appreciate help from anyone.

I wondered if anyone out there has had a similar experience to me...

For some weeks now I have had problems where the START MENU wouldn't launch, metro apps (OneDrive, Tweetium, Money, News etc) would fail to launch (just a blank window up), right mouse clicks wouldn't work, internet browsing slowed up...
Signing out of my windows account then back in again solved it... FOR A WHILE. After an hour or two gradually (one app after another etc) the same problems would occur.
Researching this, I came to the conclusion that Windows 10 was corrupt (or at least my user profile was) and a re-install was necessary. OR I also read of compatibility problems with Windows 10 in my AV software (Kaspersky Internet Security and wondered if the problem lay there.
Yesterday I uninstalled Kaspersky and relied on Win Defender. For 2 days now (unprecedented recently) my laptop has behaved impeccably, no problems as above.
So, am I to blame Kaspersky? Am I safe with Just Win Def? Any other AV suites throwing up problems? Any Kaspersky users with any experiences to share?

In installation window the window is minimised as always and some option get hidden, like they cut off only slightly showing a portion of selection button.. Like when installing program there shows selection button like, NEXT to carry on installation and CANCEL button to stop installation. It happens like NEXT button partially showing and other selection button cut off outer of that minimised windows.. Same problem with apps which use by default minimised window. Some selection option cutoff.. Though there no option to make those apps maximised. Is this problem because i use full HD monitor..? I would so happy if anyone knows what to do..^_^

Is this really a limitation for win10? Obviously apps can be pinned as tiles, but it's impossible to pin them to the left area? It seems that only a select list of folders can be pinned there, but not apps, or any personal folders. You're stuck with some automated process to determine which apps appear and which don't (recently used, most used etc..). That's useless if an app doesn't fall into those categories.

Coming from win7, this is extremely dissappointing. It seems the new windows start menu is all about showy tiles, and seriously lacking in function. I guess folks were so used to win8, that any improvement was seen as a revolution.

Am I missing something here?

- Is there some way to remove all those "NEW" signs beside all the apps in the All Apps directory?
- Any way of narrowing the widith of the tile panel? I mean the height can be changed but not the width? I have a narrow strip of small tiles within a massive panel. If I remove all of them it dissappears, but can't simply decrease the width?

Hello Gallo, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Actually, the Start screen may be better for this since you could organize and arrange them how you like in Start where you can't in Apps. The tutorials below can help show you how to if you like.

For anyone NEW to Windows 8.

The start screen is NOT a replacement for the start menu.
The all apps area IS the replacement for the start menu.

The start screen is a place for links to get pinned. It is a launcher. A start screen.
Similarly, the desktop screen is a typical dumping ground for shortcuts that you might or might not want there. It would be up to the user whether to keep them there or not. The same holds true for the start screen.

The start screen is an application launching area. Whether you think the metro or the Windows Store is bad or good does not matter here. The start screen is not designed to manage everything and all installations on the computer.

The all apps area is where the Operating System manages, sorts, labels and organizes everything installed on the computer. NOT the start screen.

The all apps area uses a feature called semantic zooming (point your mouse to the bottom right corner where you see a minus sign or press Ctrl and roll your mouse scroll wheel in the all apps area) that summarizes the contents of what is installed on the computer.

Here, every block is alphabetically organized and labelled into their own program group. The zooming feature is highly adaptable to many installations and takes one to the screen where your program is located.

Unzoomed all apps is a new design to eliminate nesting and hierarchical menu structuring. Any frequently needed program can be pinned to the start screen or taskbar on t... Read more

A:all apps is the new start menu

There is another thread, arguing the pros and cons on this subject. I can see your point, but I see the (call it Metro) screen differently.
In windows 7 and earlier, I spent time, after an initial install, arranging the Start menu into folders. I knew the contents of those folders and, when I required an app, I could go there with the necessary clicks. (Start Globe - Programs - Folder - Application). I have arranged my Metro in groups, in a similar way. But I find a spin off here. I would like the groups folded. But I have eliminated those I use infrequently, and have finished with about fifteen "dailies". This , to me, is directly comparative to the old menu.
When I select "All Apps", I get a shortcut to every .exe on my computer. Not quite so good as my earlier, more selective, system, as I said, the folders are all open, but it works for me. One sweep and I am across to the other side. I have now got used to knowing which side particular apps lie, so it takes an instant of my time. With my method of customisation, I certainly do not regard it as a Start menu. It is what I find when I open respective folders.
My opinion only: I have never liked the idea (I know it is popular!) of cluttering my desktop (that is, the legacy desktop) with shortcut icons and, frankly, I see not a single advantage over the Metro screen, of the Desktop in you picture.

Hello, dec87.I'm afraid I have some very bad news for you. Your system is infected with a nasty variant of Virut , a polymorphic file infector with IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, .scr files, downloads more malicious files to your system, and opens a back door that compromises your computer. Windows 8 is under the hood I understand pretty much windows 7. Since I have had this new Win 8 (came with my gaming laptop) I have found so many apps that will not run. I also get errors on some apps that are trying to install.. 704 errors. I Google search says this is due to corrupt windows files - don't believe that, this is straight out the box.

I have never had this much trouble getting apps to work when moving from one system to another.. even the switch from XP to Vista/Win 7 didn't give me this much trouble. I'm frustrated.

Any Store app that uses a service will most likely need you to be signed in to a Microsoft account to be able to open it. As a test, switch your local account back to a Microsoft account to see if you are able to open them afterwards.

If not, then go through the app troubleshooting steps in the tutorial below to see if they may be able to help.

Hi all, this is my first post, so first off heres my system info.

OS: WinXP Home Edition (sp2)
CPU: 1.2 ghs celeron s
Age of current windows install: about 10 months
age of system: about 8 years

ok heres the problem:

Whenever I want to install a 16 bit application (all games), I put the cd in and the normal menu comes up with the options install, tech support, readme etc.
I click install and the menu disappears... then a few hourglasses... then nothing, so I go ctrl + alt + delete, and lo and behold, ntvdm.exe in the processes tab is taking up 99%cpu.

I googled around for about 2 afternoons, and found that it is for 16 bit applications, and that this is a problem that has happened before, but none of the methods on the other sites have helped, heres what i've tried:

Going in the system32 folder and deleting ntvdm.exe and it's dll and then restarting the computer.
taking ntvdm.exe and it's dll from my brothers vista laptop and putting it into my system32 folder.
uninstalling sp3
scanning my registry with iolo system mechanic 8

none of those have worked, and I tried contacting microsoft fpr support but they say go to the manufacturer of my computer instead, sure.. whatever, after 8 years i ddoubt they would still help me.
so my current situation is.

16 bit games won't install (my computer is old so that's what I mostly play. they're still awesome games.)
microsoft won't help.
I'm thinking of having my computer reinstalled.

A:16 bit apps wont work ntvdm.exe is the cause

i guess it isn't a stupid question or an easy question then.. oh well. Anyone want to upload their ntvdm.exe and its ntvdmd.dll to mediafire.com so I can download it and put it on my computer?

only do this if you are sure that you can run retro games on your computer.

Firstly I am sorry if this is in the wrong section.

So I am here because I have a bit of a problem. I cannot load any apps.
Ok so last night i was on my laptop and i let it run out of battery then i went to sleep. I woke up this morning and it turned out my laptop was actually still on so i restarted it and plugged in my charger. This is when the problems started to begin.
It wouldnt load up and it said there was a problem and it had options to refresh to reset and i pressed refresh i let it all refresh etc. So i thought great my laptop is back to normal.

After this i realised that my apps where gone and i thought id be able to download them again as it was only a refresh. Everytime i click on the store it brings me back to the home screen so i thought i will do a system restore and it was doing the dame thing everytime i click on Change PC settings.

I have looked on the internet everywhere on how to fix this. I've tried everything from going on cmd to running misconfig etc. Nothing works.

Then i notice i cant access my files! It seems like my hardrive or something is locked it comes up saying C:// is not accessable.
It wont do a diagnosis or anything
Please can someone help me
Thank you

A:Windows 8 wont load apps

First, Windows 8's "Refresh" option is essentially a clean install. It wipes all programs and the system directory, installs Windows 8, then re-installs any "Modern UI" apps you owned. Any older programs are deleted, and have to be installed manually.

As for your second problem, how can you even boot the laptop if it won't access drive C:? That seems highly unlikely.

Hello All,

After the nightmare update we have all be enjoying, which has reset a lot of my customisation and fonts as well as killing one app, I have also got all my apps showing in my start menu instead of the convenient 'All Apps' button which made my start menu so neat and tidy before.

Anyone have an ideas on how to hide all my apps again? My start menu is ginormous with them all taking up space in the middle there, and everything I need quick access to is there in icon form anyway.

Thanks in advance for your time and advice,

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate x86 on a Dell Optiplex PC. I have a strange request here, but I hope there is a way to fix it. I do remember when Vista was coming out, I was hearing that the Start menu will have a feature that displays recently opened programs. When I ended up getting Vista though, I noticed that in the Start menu, there was a list of everyday apps already in there before I opened anything, but when I do open apps though, the orientation changes. But I myself happen to like the orientation it comes with, so, ever since I got Vista, I have been going crazy attempting to keep the Start menu in that orientation, and it has just become a habit. But is there any way to make it stay the way it is? I have heard that if you open Taskbar properties, then click Start menu, and uncheck show a list of recently opened apps, it would do what I wanted. But no, when I did it, it just removed them all! I had to open them all back in the right order to get them back! So what I am saying is that I don't want it to rearrange anything as I open apps, and just keep the same orientation. So basically, I just want this feature disabled, and make it just a convenient list of everyday apps. Is there any regedit, group policy editor, or any trick for this? Please help! I have been driven nuts over the past few years since I got Vista!
Here is the orientation I like:

A:Start menu rearranging after I open other apps. No!

I don't have Vista but this works for 7 so I am assuming it works for Vista too. Right click each of your above programs and select Pin to Start Menu. Left click and drag to arrange them in the order of your preference. After arranging the the programs right click in the recent menu list and select Properties. Under the Start Menu tab uncheck the box next to Store and display recently opened programs if you only want to see your pinned programs.
Vista end of life arrived in April of this year and Security Updates are no longer offered by Microsoft. I would advise against doing any banking or internet purchases on the computer. There is a BC thread showing how to use Windows Server updates for Vista but this is not supported by Microsoft.

Having overall issues with the operating system on this machine. The system will boot to initially a blank screen, after a few moments the icons and rest will appear.
OS: Windows8.1
After the initial system file check, it did load the intial explorer shell alot faster but still have issues with the 8.1 Start Menu and related 8.1 Services including searching via the Windows charms.
Ran System File Check , Found Errors unable to fix some. Attached System File Check CBS.Log.
Initially the system was unable to launch the System File Check due to pending repairs. I had to manually delete the "Pending.XML" Files in order to launch the system file check initially. I am attempting to try to refrain from running a system refresh/reset. Any other additional suggestions or thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
Update: Appears that upon creating a new user profile that the start menu now loads. Search is appearing. I think it may be just a corrupt user profile. Think this is solved. Just wanted to share the update if anyone else had this issue later.

I recently purchased a game from the Windows Store. It said it was installed. I went to the start screen to find it and it is not there. I did a search and it does not show up. I went back to the store to re-install it but it says I own the app,

Anyone have any ideas how I can sort this out. I am running Windows 8.1 Preview.

A:Purchased Apps not appearing in start menu

does it show when you view the 'all apps' screen or use the search option using the app name?

So, I've been trying to add a few things to the app list in the start menu for a while now. Every site I've gone to says to put the shortcuts in "%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs". I have done that multiple times, checked to make sure the shortcuts were pointed at the correct executable, moved the short cuts up a directory and then back to the Programs folder. I have restarted my machine since then, and I'm not quite sure where I'm going wrong.

I can place a new folder or custom shortcut in the correct start menu location (current user or all users) but it will not appear in the All apps list. If I go to the folder or shortcut and right-click Pin to Start it will appear as a tile in the start menu, but still will not show up in the All apps list. I think this behavior started with Version 1511 since it was working for me in the previous version.

A:Unable to add to All apps list in Start Menu

Hi, a quick test seems to show the same. The representation of traditional start menu items and structures in Win 10's start menu is (in my experience) garbage. And not just since the November upgrade. Sorry to have to say that, but it flattens all the subfolders inherited from a 'normal' menu used in Win 7 and 8, loses the sub-folders, including those created by each program's installation, leading to things like

where each 'Help' is from a different program.

If you want a meaningful start menu without these quirks and oddities, try e.g. Classic Shell.

Hi guys,

Just got this error and couldn't find anything like this solved.
The icons (or maybe the apps) are missing from the start menu.

A:Start menu icons/apps missing

If you have one you can try a system restore to a time before this happened. You could also try down loading the ISO from MS and doing a in-place repair install. Windows 10 ISO Download - Windows 10 Forums
To do the in-place repair mount the ISO by double clicking on it. Then look for the install.exe and clicking on it. This will repair Windows 10 without you loosing anything and hopefully fixing your problem.

I've tried the tutorial Here and it does not work.

I'm trying to add the app 'DotA 2' and have put it in the \programdata\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs and then restarted my PC. It is still not showing up.
