Preferred Solution: Keyboard. Many keys not functioning.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I'm assuming you have windows 10 on the system.....
I'd suggest you check Sticky keys in control panel. You might have mistakenly turn it on.
At the left bottom of taskbar, right click windows icon, click on Control Panel, Ease Of Access, and then Change How Your Keyboard Works. If there's a check mark in box - Turn on Sticky keys) then uncheck it and click Apply.

The ALT Keys on my USB Keyboard used to work perfectly fine until around the 1st. I'm unsure of what caused this issue.

The computer I'm using is a laptop and both of the ALT keys on the laptop work perfectly fine.

The USB Keyboard I have has ALT keys but those don't function at all. They used to, but not anymore.

I've tried checking and unchecking sticky keys, looking at the On-Screen Keyboard, uninstalling, rolling back, and updating drivers... full system restores to middle of last month which is about a week before I suspected it stopped working.

Nothing has worked so far... what could this possibly be?

I've had this strange problem since couple of weeks. Some days certain alphabet keys stop functioning properly, I have to hit it hard to get them to work while after a while of hard hitting keys, it starts functioning properly & I've seen this happening to Space Bar too. Currently, I've issue with Space Bar alone. I've to hard hit space bar or hit it multiple times to get it functioning.

At times I've noted the prob shifts to other some other key the next day or it doesn't have any prob at all. Its been all strange

I would like to know what might be the reason for this odd behavior ? Do u think laptop getting hot might be a reason for that or working for longer hours ? I've Laptop Cooler always on, never turn it off.

I'm using Dell Vostro 1015. Its more than 2yrs old now, never had to take it to any computer shop for repairs or maintenance so far. Never formatted or restored or reloaded OS either.

The only probs I'd so far are with mouse. I've changed 2 mouses already, I prefer using external mouse piece.

Hi goodlad,

You should try an external keyboard with the system. If external keyboard works fine then you should consider replacing the internal keyboard.

As due to usage and time keys stops responding. However if the similar issue occurs with the external keyboard then it might be a software related issue.

I recently noticed that some of my Windows keyboard shortcut keys aren't working...........any ideas????????

example: If I depress the windows button + "m" my open windows do not minimize

note: I checked the other user accounts on my pc and the keyboard shortcut keys seem to be working fine, just mine aren't working properly. The problem seems to only be w/ the Windows Natural keyboard shortcuts.

The problem is no real biggy, but I would like to regain use of this feature.....it makes computing a tad bit easier. Thanks.

Hello, I have an HP Pavilion g6-2249wm Notebook PC with the operating system Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit). I recently started having problems with my keyboard. All of the keys are working fine with the exception of three. When I click the space bar, a bunch of random letters type instead of a space character. When I click backspace, nothing backspaces and the screen opens to the right that shows where you want to project a second screen (pc screen only, duplicate, extend, second screen only)When I click the enter key, it types a couple letters and it bookmarks the page I am on. I've already tried a couple things to fix the problem, such as:Uninstalling the keyboard from device manager and rebooting.Running virus scans, none which have picked up viruses or anything that could cause this.Resetting my PC to factory settings. I thought it could be the actual keyboard that is having problems, but all of the other keys work perfectly fine. I've researched on google my problem and have done a lot of other things people have suggested but nothing seems to be working. I would rather find out online and see if it's something I could fix myself before I go somewhere and pay a lot of money to get it fixed. Thank you in advance.

Hi All,

this is my first post on this so if this issue has already been dealt with kindly direct me to that link.

I have a user whose F1 and F2 keys are not working as normal. I.e. F1 to open Help Menu in Excel and F2 to Edit the Cell.

What I have tried already:
Keyboard is plugged in securely
All the device drivers are up-to-date
PC has been restarted multiple times
There is no system error when PC reboots
There are no beeping sounds either
There is no problem with other users? keyboards
Regional settings are also correct for the keyboard - UK Keyboard
Booted in Safe mode and the F1 and F2 keys function correctly
Uninstalled and re-installed the keyboard drivers
Tried replacing the keyboard with a Wireless Keyboard - didn't work
Tried replacing the keyboard with a Wired PS/2 keyboard - didn't work
Tried replacing the keyboard with a Wired USB keyboard - didn't work
Replaced the entire PC with a clean PC - still the same problem !

Am using a HP keyboard Model: KU-0316.

The PC Tower works fine in my office just not on the users desk?!

Please let me know what else I can do to resolve the issue.

I've been attempting to create shortcut keys for "My Documents", "My Pictures" and "My Videos". I created the regular shortcut icons on my desktop and adjusted the properties, setting the shortcut space to be ctrl+alt+d for "My Documents". The shortcut saves its properties properly, I can see so when I attempt to re-edit them that they are unchanged, but when I try to actually USE the shortcut key it does not work.

I've found all kinds of threads on the internet of people who don't place the shortcuts on the desktop, or have interfering shortcuts etc. but these are quite litterally the only shortcuts I've ever attempted and so I know there's nothing for them to be interfering with.

If anyone has speculation what to do, it would be much appreciated.

Hi, my cursor disappears after a few seconds, likewise the keys just stop typing at anything from 5 seconds onwards, as I use my laptop (Acer 5733) mainly for forums this is very frustrating because I look at the keys whilst typing, so I can type a lot that just doesn't appear on the screen & has to be done again.

I have to left click with the mouse to continue typing or scrolling.

The laptop has a dual boot system with Ubuntu & it works fine on that so it must be windows & not the laptop itself,( oddly enough it seems fine on here, but some forums seem better than others bizarrely.)

Do you know off hand how much ram is in your laptop? I only ask because I have had that same issue with my prior computer running xp; and it turned out it was a lack of enough available ram. Usually if that happens sometimes it can in fact be a lack of ram for what you have open and if there are other programs open then that can affect it as well.

Hi all. I have already posted this once here. The topic had quite a few views and not a single reply. I'm giving this another try, as the problem persists and is not getting any better.

The keyboard on my Aurora m9700 is having some strange issues. I cannot figure if it is software or hardware related, either. At random intervals, the keyboard will cease function. But when I go into standby, then come out of standby the problem seems to be magically fixed! In fact, the problem just happened right after I finished typing the last sentence. I checked event manager, nothing changed. I had to go into standby and come out of it...

So please, is there anyone on here that can help me out? I have reformatted the computer since this started happening and nothing has changed, so I do not know what could possibly be causing this!

Hello! A couple of days ago I spilled cereal on my laptop and the screen went black and stopped working. I freaked out and didn't know what to do so I tried wiping it off then got advice to put in rice. I didn't know that I had to turn the laptop off at first so I think the motherboard might have gotten fried in that time it was on
Anyway I turned the laptop off after a while, and today when I turned it on it actually started working and the screen wasn't black so I thought it was all okay

But then When I started typing, the letters would come out differently
For example "D" would be "FSDA" and "Q" would be RWQEU and some letters weren't even working. What's wrong with it? Is it possible that the motherboard is fried or?

OK this is my sister's computer.  I am 1000 miles away and trying to help guide her via phone to resolve issue.  She is using an HP Pavillion a6642p Desktop.....can't tell you whether it is a 32 or 64bit, OS Vista Home Edition.
After two days of online research, I have found many users of HP running into the same issue.  The problem computer here though has another weird keyboard issue.  First let me say that we've tried a power drain and I've had her change from wireless keyboard/mouse to standards, but still same issue.  She isn't able to reboot and get any function keys to work nor can she access the commands from the Boot screen.
Now this afternoon with the new keyboard in after her 4th time or so rebooting every single key on the keyboard will open up the BIOS startup text (white letters on black screen)!!  That isn't even a command function....what is the deal with that?
Oh and BTW, there is absolutely no pause between hitting the power button and the HP Logo screen/Boot screen...so can't even get to the Advanced Boot Options or any other command.

Hello there. Yesterday, I bought the Ideapad 310-15isk, and it's phenomenal in many aspects. However, I'm a bit bothered by the extensive keyboard this laptop has, most importantly, the pagination commands on the arrow keys. I've been meaning to find a solution to disable those and just make them work on the Numpad since it's really bothersome to type on and then go all the way back because of the return pagination key. Is there any solution for this to unbind those commands only on the arrow keys?

This is an odd issue that I have not found anyone else having. I am not sure as to the cause of it.

Basically, when I press certain pairs of keys, the computer acts as though another key is being pressed as well.
Some examples:
q+s: qws
w+d: wed
r+y: ryu
k+u: kui
l+i: lio

There are others, as well as ones with 3 keys triggering a fourth. They follow no general pattern (although wd, qs, ku, and li are the same pattern
on the keyboard, that pattern doesn't cause a similar response on other keys, like ef, rg, th, yj, etc.)

This problem has persisted as long as I have had this laptop. I got it used on Amazon. It said that, in terms of condition, it just had a few minor
scratches and such, which is accurate.

This occurs every time the keys are pressed at the same time (in fact, while typing this, I was constantly having to correct typos such as "everyu",
"lioke",  and "whiole".)

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Hey guys,

I'm having a really big problem with my keyboard. I'm running windows 7. The problem started about four days ago, I've searched for various ways to solve this problem but I couldn't find any.

The issue is that randomly, my keyboard will stop typing keys and every time I hit a key, instead of typing a key, it would act as if I was hitting a shortcut. Such as, when it happens i hit the "F" key and the tools options come up. This happens on every windows even on MSN messenger, I hit my keys and it hits shortcut keys for the window I'm on.

I would be using my computer for a while and the keys would work fine but then a little later, somethings 30 minutes sometimes an hour or two, randomly they turn into shortcut keys. Every key i hit, I tried a new keyboard but it seems to happen also. I don't get the issue, I've scanned fully using malwareBytes, MCAffee, and Advanced system pro, but it's still happening. It's really frustrating and annoying when it does happen. I've turned my keyboard off and on, re sync'd. I'm starting to lean more towards it being a virus or something that messed with my settings somehow.

Malwayre Bytes did find something while scanning

files\Spigot\wtxpcom\components\widgitoolbarff.dll (Adware.WidgiToolbar) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

I'm really stumped here, I haven't tried un-installing my keyboard & re installing it but Idk what good t... Read more

A:Keyboard keys randomly turn into shortcut keys

I would also like to add that, when this occurs. I have to restart my computer for the keyboard to work correctly. It's wireless & I've tried a wired keyboard also, it's the same issue.

Also when this happens, while on the internet. Every time I click a link or the internet like "home" "news" anything at all on the internet even an image, it won't go to it but instead it will download the data into my computer... It's very strange & I'm completely stumped on what to do. Or to even search this on google for other similar issues, I don't even know how I would go around to search that. Or what I would type in the search bar. This happens with both Firefox & google chrome. Even outside the internet in just my desktop, it's impossible to type even on notepad.

But if I press Ctrl+Alt+Delete the windows security screen shows up as it is supposed to. The arrow keys also work fine. Also, the pc reboots every so often (no set interval), a blue screen comes up before the system reboots but it doesn't stay up long enough to read what it says. Could this be caused by a virus? If so, do you know any fixes? I'm using Windows 2000. Help is greatly appriciated.

Hi, Try the following. Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Regards, DP-K

I am using a Razer Arctosa keyboard on my desktop computer running Win7 (keyboard is approx 2 years old).

I am experiencing the following (recently, and sometimes it occasionally goes back to normal):

Pressing "w" registers "w4"
Pressing "W" (shift + w) registers "W$"
Pressing "4" registers "w4"
Pressing "$" (shift + 4) registers "W$"
(As if "w" and "4" are linked; occasionally it registers as "4w")

Pressing "u" registers "u" and F5.
(which means when I am typing and press the "u" it refreshes my page... this is the second time I am writing this...)

Pressing the Windows key registers NumLock toggle.

Pressing "7" registers "/7"

This is all of the weird ones I have noticed. All other keys seem normal.
As I type this it has done the above, but now it is back to normal. Cannot find a pattern when it decides to change from crap to normal. It is back to crap again.
This is the 4th day since it started and the computer has been restarted/shutdown various times.
I have also checked for malware and it is all clear.
The most recent keyboard drivers have been downloaded and installed, but did not fix it.
No liquids have been spilled.
Have searched the web and have not encountered a solution (or someone with the exact kind of problem).
Anyone has any idea of a fix or what may be affecting it?

Pretty much every time I see this it's due to something spilled on the keyboard that has damaged it or just a keyboard that has failed.

Test it on another computer, if it does the same thing then it needs to be replaced. On the other computer don't load any drivers or software for it just plug it in and wait for Windows to install it's drivers for it and test it.

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!
