I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Could be your 550, how old is it ?

If you had an issue with 7 and now an issue with 10, I suspect the card, time for something made in this decade

Are you using 359.06 ????

Download them again and do a custom clean install.

Hello folks,

I seem to be having multiple problems all at the same time (all of which may or may not be related) but let me start from the beginning.

This all started when I tried to connect my Inspiron 1720 laptop to our television. For some reason my laptop froze, the image on both my computer and TV had white lines across it, and so I turned off my system since it was locked up.

I restarted and began having display problems - first windows were not opening in the desktop area. They would open in the system tray, but were "unreachable" by the mouse. I played with display settings and got the screen to fit...but now seem to have 2 primary problems:

PROBLEM 1:

Whenever I play games, view pictures, or Windows Media Player, I see strange "plaid boxes." However, the desktop is fine and everything else appears to work fine. I contacted NVIDIA and I have installed different driver versions, as well as the OEM (Dell's) driver's - all did not work - I still saw the distorted images when playing games, viewing pictures, and videos.

I have also completed System Restore's to points prior to when I was having the problem - unfortunately that did not work.

Here are screenshots of what I am seeing:

The first set of pictures that you put up look like classics examples of bad video RAM. In a desktop PC I would tell you to swap out the video card with a differnt one to verify that is the issue since in a few cases bad drivers can cause the issue but it's highly unlikely. Professional service by a local non big box computer shop is your best bet at this point.

Heyy everyone,

This is my first post on this forum, and it has taken me a while to post this thread since I have been trying to research and figure out my own problem myself by searching many, MANY, other related forums but so far have had not much luck. Also, obviously I couldn't find an individual who had the exact same specs as my computer who had the same issues, so I am going try and get help through this thread specifically for my computer. First I will explain everything that is going or happened and then all the specs are at the end of the thread.

Recently I downloaded a trial of World of Warcraft just to start playing it again for a little bit. I played it for about two days and then after playing it for about an hour or two straight, all of a sudden, the video card craps out, screen flashes, goes black, and then comes back within seconds. Then a message error pops stating 'Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered.'.

Within those two days I was playing though, I was doing a lot of updates on my computer since I reformatted my laptop recently. So I thought maybe it had to do with the updates and decided to do a system restore. Of course with my luck, the system restore failed, and failed a couple more times after trying again but at different restoration points/dates. So then I decided so continue with my updates since I still had to install services pack 1, more updates, service pack 2, and more updates.

Hi scoobydog and welcome to Tenforums.

Try a different, confirmed working, video cable (DVI or whatever you are using). Use a different port, to see if that makes a difference. (It sounds to me like a failing cable.)
I would also make sure you have the most up-to-date drivers.
Failing those, I would try re-seating your graphics card, and the power cable to it; even replacing the power cable to it, if possible/necessary.

Hi!
First of all thanks in advance for any assistance you might provide.
I'm growing really desperate with this.
In April I've purchased a Dell XPS 13, i7, intel HD5500, touch-screen ultrabook, with Windows 8.1 Pro - OEM version.
For about a month I had no issues at all, installed some programs and games, played them as normal, graphical performance seemed really good. Windows updated as normal.
In May, while playing Civ 5, I started getting the dreaded "Video Display Driver stopped working and has recovered error", which exited the game.
Searched the internet, went to the Dell website, autodetected my pc and installed latest graphic drivers, but also chipset and bios, the whole thing.
Things got worse, not better. The error started showing up a lot more frequently and sometimes the screen froze, went blank intermittent with pixelized multicolored and polygon-filled screens. This started happening also on the log in screen, to the point that I could no longer enter Windows at all. Blue Screens started to show up a lot with the VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (igdkmd64.sys). I performed several hardware tests via Bios Diagnostics and other similar software, all OK. Virus check: OK. I read that this type of problem only usually occurs when playing videos or other graphic intensive software...to me it happens everywhere and all the time when not under the basic windows driver!

I decided to try to recover back windows. Did not work. Only thing that... Read more

I saw a display driver update listed on my windows update for my PC I downloaded it and installed it.......then my screen went blank! Nothing at all just a blank screen. I rebooted and still the blank screen. I rebooted into safe mode and checked in device manager and my display device had a yellow triangle with exclamation mark showing there was a problem. I was going to use the rollback feature to rollback to my old driver but the option wasn't available to use. I went into control panel add/remove programs and removed the NVIDIA drivers. I rebooted my machine and i could see the screen ok...everything was fine.....BUT a window opened giving me an option to reboot now to install NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS properly or wait till later, i chose now and ended up with the same scenario as before......Nothing on my screen after the pc had rebooted. I un-installed the NVidia drivers in safe mode...rebooted to get to where i am now.....I know that when i turn this pc off i will have a blank screen again when i boot up and will have to go into safemode again to un-install the driver....then boot back into normal start up in order to see my screen....Can someone please advise me how to get things back to normal.....I have windows Vista home premium with service pack1. Thanks

Have you tried 'System Restore' yet?
This should remove the update back out of your system, giving your original display drivers back.

Hello Marcia,

Welcome to the Forum. You probably need Nvidia display driver. I can't help more because you didn't tell us about the brand and model of your computer. However, you can download needed driver from NVIDIA Driver Downloads - Advanced Search after providing there few information about your video card.

Hope it was helpful somehow.

I have been working on my friends HP Pavilion dv6 laptop. When I got to it it was running like a slug. He apparently didn't have any antivirus for 2 months. Anyway he didn't have any HP specific disks for it so I reformatted and put on Windows 7, that it had on before. I then I ran Windows updates and then installed antivirus.

Now the laptop seems to be working fine except the display driver is not working properly. The images and font are all big. Kind of like Safe Mode size. Not small and sharp. Tried updating the driver through Device Manager. Windows comes back with the result that all is fine. I wouldn't mind also if there was a way to update all of the drivers although this is not critical.

I tried finding drivers on the HP Australia website in their driver section but I must have been lacking information as it came back with a zero result. I also tried their HP scan funtion but that yeilded zero results also, finding no device?

Thanks

I have a post here addressing the same problem as before but I cannot find it.

The problem started a couple of months ago. Basically ud be working on the computer and for no reason the screen would go black and then flicker back and you'd get a message down the bottom stating the nvidia display driver had failed but has now recovered.

Now the problem has got worse and now the screen goes out black and wont come back. This may be follow by a little blue box stating that there is is now HDMI input.

The only way out of this is to reset the pc and when it comes back it is ok for a while.

I have tried installing all video drivers from the original disk and also downloading and installing the latest driver from the Nvidia web site.

I had some problem with some Physics driver in the package but think I have got that to go now.

This whole PC is less than 1yr old so I cant figure.

Any help appreciated

Thanks

My first guess would be an overheating issue, either with the GPU itself or the PC in general is getting to hot inside the computer case. Have you taken the side panels off the case and blown out the PC thoroughly including the blades on all fans, especially the GPU fan? Does the PC have adequate cooling - IMO you can never have enough cooling?

I had a more severe version of the problem just a little while ago where the monitor had gone to sleep and I could not wake it with the mouse. I actually had to reboot to make it work again.

Ive looked in device manager and looks ok there, This is a very new computer and has just had a fresh install a couple of days ago so I cant see it being anything major.

Hi there,

Occasionally, I have been receiving the following error message over the last six months:

Just before this error message comes up, the system very briefly freezes and blanks out. It seems to occur randomly, but I am not certain how to prevent it from occurring altogether. A couple of times, too, previously, my applications would suddenly stop responding (for example, while browsing on any search engine), or trying to run other programs (at times, I couldn't even click on anything on the desktop). I am not sure if those problems are directly related to the display driver error, but upon the two times that it happened, I performed a system restore, and that seemed to correct the problem on both occasions, but the display driver error continued. I also believe that this problem led to three identical crashes (blue screen of death video-related error).

I have also attempted to update my graphics driver (which is an Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600) on the device (a screenshot attachment is provided that shows the expanded display driver section), but that didn't resolve the problem. I am using Windows 10 (64-bit) and have a Lenovo y510p laptop. Some details concerning my graphics driver:

This makes the display worse, very blurry and garbled. So what have I done wrong? Hello,
Not sure if this is the proper thread to post this in, but here's my problem.
Running Windows XP Pro SP3 on a custom laptop.
So, basically I was having problems with my video drivers and uninstalled them. (Ati Radeon 9600/9700 Series) I had the windows default (VGA drivers?) running but somehow I disabled them. So what I have now is the computer boots up properly but after the Windows splash screen loads, I have a completely black screen. I can hear the windows startup sounds, so I know Windows is loading and the systems running, but with no video drivers running, I obviously can't see anything. Tried running from safemode but seems to "lock up". Tried VGA mode, but the same blank screen/windows loading thing happends.

Alas, since its a friends old laptop, I do not have the original windows CD or drivers for the computer.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

When downloading some mpgs the screen blackens out and a few seconds later all the characters become large and a window appears saying that the ialmrnt5 display driver is not responding or working. Then the pc needs to be rebooted. After rebooting a new screen comes out saying the computer recovered from a serious error.

Any help in getting this driver re-installed? Thanks a million for any help!

Can we have your computer specs? Motherboard, CPU, RAM, Videocard? We can't do much until we have these. If you don't know how to find them, google CPU-Z and download it. It will tell you all of these things. Again, if you do not know how to retrieve information from CPU-Z just post pictures of every frame of it in this thread and we can help you.

I use NVIDIA GeForce 6200 LE the currently installed version is 163.71. I did upgrade this previously to fix this problem but with no results.
Sometimes after I boot up, windows move is a sort of wave effect from top to bottom, for instance, if I scroll down a webpage, it loads from the top to the bottom after I move my scroll bar aswell as moving a window, the contests loads in the new location from top to bottom, also I am unable to open my Nvidia desktop manager and my Nvidia control panel is not there, but it reappears afew minutes later, which then, I cannot open either.
Also, I am unable to put my computer on standby, as the standby button is faded out which will be fixed by a restart.

When this happens, my display tells me it is at 640 480 resolution and Lowest (4 bit) which I cannot change, when my monior is actually at what I usually use, 1024 x 768 and Highest (32 bit).
If I click okay or apply, it does change to the low resolution and colour quiality, and i can then change it up to my default.

Bump
I should also add that I have changed my monitor with another one, same problem.

When I boot up my laptop everything displays perfectly okay but when its time for me to enter my password or swipe my finger the screen is black. My cursor shows but that's the only thing showing. Swiping my finger does not log me in. I'm guessing that it is a display driver problem (invidia).

I tried booting in safe mode with and without command prompt but again after everything loads up i cant see the cmd prompt or password field.

I have the original vista restore disk that came with the laptop and would like to use the system restore on boot up option through the disk but I already have a disk inside my slot load cd/dvd drive and without logging in there is no way for me to remove the disk.

Should I open up my laptop, manually pry the disk out, then force a new one in and boot up system restore that way in order to restore to a point prior to my driver problem. I need help

The drive should open as long as there is power to the computer. I just opened the dvd drive on a HP HDX laptop will the bios splash screen was up. It has nothing to do with windows. If the drive will not open I believe you have bigger issues.

I have a machine at my work that is running Windows XP OS SP2. The most perculiar thing has happened. It does not show the Display Properties tabs, other than the theme window. Also, when I try to install the VIA chipset and vga driver for the particular motherboard, it installs, and i can modify the resolution, (although the tabs are still not there), but as soon as i restart the computer it reverts back to the original driver.

Any help would be of great assistance.

Hi bigfella,

Try this :

Copy the Entire contents inside of the following box into Notepad :

This is a Toshiba Satellite M60 laptop OS XP Pro 32bit.
This is my backup laptop. My primary laptop a Dell is getting cleaned out and desmelled. Luckly the laptop was turned off when one of my cats took a piss on it. It still works. A tech friend is cleaning it out and disinfecting it.
This Toshiba laptop works fine, I am typing on it now, except for the prog called Roxio's Easy Creater 10. The prog doesn't like the generic graphics video driver that XP Pro installed. Easy Creater 10 is the only prog that I have that will burn dvd's that will play in a stand alone dvd player. I tried every graphics driver that Toshiba has for this laptop and none of them will install. And Toshiba doesn't regnize the s/n number as valid.

Ok, This problem occurs only when using the Vista operating system and only when playing games such as Prototype and Call of Duty 4. Black screen, then flash after a few seconds and the game continues where it stopped because of the above-mentioned problems. when I finished playing with, in the bottom right corner, near the Language bar, see the triangle with! sign. Display driver has stopped working but has successfully recovered

Do you know how to fix this problem...

It happens with every Ati catalyst driver !

I've been having a strange problem in which when I run a game (any game) i start to get graphical glitches (flashing textures, coloured dots appearing randomly etc). These build up and eventually the game freezes, the sound loops and if i wait even longer the computer restarts itself. It says on the next startup that the problem was something to do with the nvidia display driver.

However, I've tried installing older drivers, newer drivers (using driver cleaner etc aswell) but there has been no change. I know that when i reformat windows the problem goes away for a while but comes back.

here is the small error message i get on startup:

I recently upgraded the RAM in my Toshiba Satellite laptop (model 1905-s301) from 256k to 512k.

Now, for some reason, I am getting an error message indicating that there is a problem with my display driver. When this happens, everything on my display becomes very large and appears to be colored in pastels. It usually happens when I am attempting to stream video. The error message is as follows...

"WINDOWS - DISPLAY DRIVER STOPPED RESPONDING"

"The ati2dvag display driver has stopped working normally. Save your work and reboot the system to restore full display functionality. The next time you reboot the machine a diaolog will be displayed giving you a chance to upload data about this failure to Microsoft."

I am using the most current version of the ATI display driver and tried reinstalling it for good measure but to no avail. Has anyone ever encountered this problem before? If so, can anyone help? Thanks - Greg

Could be due to faulty or incompatible ram. Have you tried testing it with MEMTEST86+: http://www.memtest.org/

Where did you download the latest display driver from?

When i installed the latest drivers from
http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=22264
and rebooted my system the screen displayed a distorted login screen and did not display pretty much anything, by randomly clicking i logged in to my desktop and there the screen remained distorted (as if there was fractured glass flagella lying over it) after which the monitor stopped receiving a signal and the computer stopped responding or froze. Now i can only get back to a bootable situation by deleting the ATI display drivers in safe mode and restarting. Then it of course doesnt recognize my display drivers and no program requiring my graphics card can run.

Please can Help me with this problem?

A:ATI Radeon 9800 pro display driver problem. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Try using Driver Cleaner to remove the drivers in safe mode.
http://www.drivercleaner.net/ then physically remove the card, reinstall it, start the computer and hopefully you can reinstall the drivers and get everything to work.

Hi guys! My second post in only three days, it does not go well for me!

I booted up a newly installed game, and it was running a bit sluggishly. After 5 minutes or so, my display went crazy - all sorts of fuzzy purple and blue garbage, like my display was being scrambled. Couldn't quit out, so i reset the PC. It booted fine, but just before the desktop i got a BSOD telling me that my display driver was boxxurd.

I thought, well that's fine - i'll just reinstall it. But now, when i switch it on, the scramble effect from earlier is ever-present, even on the boot screens. I can barely see the logo.

My thoughts were that i needed to switch to the motherboard's on-board display, so that i can safely reinstall my display drivers. How do i go about doing that? I've googled the problem, but i cannot find an answer. I can't access the recovery menu to load safe mode, because i can't see what keys to press.

Any ideas?

TLDR: How can i boot with my on-board graphics without access to any display at all?

Thanks in advance!

Hello again computer saviours!

Wonder if you can help me with this latest pc problem. For the past couple of weeks, maybe a month, my pc's had a problem where all of a sudden in the middle of whatever you're doing (generally when you're on the internet I think??) the screen suddenly goes black or blue. Sometimes it recovers itself, sometimes it crashes and turns itself off completely. I've also noticed that sometimes it sort of 'hangs' and then comes up with a message saying something along the lines of 'Display driver not working' (I don't even know what a 'driver' is, much less a 'display driver').

I've no idea what this might be related to (as you've probably gathered I'm a complete technophobe) so I've logged it under W7 but do please let me know if it should be logged somewhere else.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Jackie
