No longer prompted to selected audio input type?

Q: No longer prompted to selected audio input type?

Hi, was wondering if I could get some help maybe? My Dell laptop (Windows 8) used to prompt me to select the type of audio device I was inserting into the audio jack (i.e. Skullcandy earbuds, over the ear headphones, gaming headphones) and then hit accept, but then one day within the last few months the pop-up box that appeared when I plugged something into the jack suddenly stopped appearing; I'm afraid I may have pressed the "do not show this box" button by accident one time but I really don't remember. I'm mostly just trying to re-enable the prompt, but I'm not really computer savvy and I can't find it in the audio options anywhere! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: No longer prompted to selected audio input type?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My audio jack has suddenly and inexplicably failed. Before this point, whenever I plugged in my headphones, they would be detected immediately and the computer would switch to that output. Now, when I plug them in, not only do they not produce sound, they are not recognized by the computer. No message telling me I've plugged in a device. Nothing in the sound section of the control column telling me I've got something in the jack. Nothing. This is exceptionally problematic.

Hello, a bit stumped on this one.  I have had the XPS 2710 since Nov and use the HDMI input (aka use my XPS 2710 as a monitor) for my Xbox 360 and my PS3 from time to time.  The video still works great but I no longer am receiving any audio using the hdmi this way. The PS3 and 360 still work fine using HDMI on my AV Rec but not when connected to the XPS.
Here is what I have tried so far. . .
A different HDMI Cable
Updating the RealTek drivers
Updating the nVidia drivers
Updating the Intel drives------------------------------------------------
Only thing I see listed in my Sounds settings are  the Speakers and the RealTek optical out.
Nothing seems to be disabled under sounds or device manager.  Thanks for your suggestions.

I havent been here for awhile but whenever i've had a question you guys have helped me out.... This is a weird one though...Ok, Im trying to dual-boot xp pro and ubuntu (the latest version). I can't seem to use the console though. I understand Unbuntu doesn't use root but when I type "su" and it prompts me for a password I type my user password and it says its invalid. But the weird part is when im typing no password shows up...not even little stars....Im new to linux so I might be missing something...any help is much appreciated thanks

A:not able to type root password when prompted

The asterisks are not supposed to show up so no one can find out the length of your password - this is standard behaviour on unix systems.

When you do su without a username parameter, then it is the root password you have to type in. Have you tried an empty password?

BTW, you should make a habit out of using "su -" instead of plain "su".

I'm attempting to re-create a batch file I made several years ago for XP that I've since lost. I am attempting to write a batch file to run a program that prompts for user input. I need to automate the input of the data, but I don't have access to the source of the program. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Using batch to input prompted data while running a program in command line

Thank you for your question benhavo. My name is benhavo, and I have your answer...

In case anyone runs into the same question, I figured out a solution that works fine for me:

echo input| command

input = the value you are inputting to the prompt
command = call to the program

Suddenly I have a computer that won't handle and aspx operation properly. A website has a button you click to generate a report, in word doc form. But now instead of opening as a word doc, you're prompted to open or save a .aspx file. The aspx file opens in notepad, but that's part of the problem, because it should be creating and opening a *.docx file not an *docx.aspx file.

This works fine on other computers, and worked fine on this computer until a few days ago.

I have tried:
Mucking around with different security settings in IE,
Looked at file extensions, tried setting them to open aspx with word or with IE,
Tried the aspx file association reg fix on this site.
Tried repairing office
Tried sfc /scannow (found no integrity violations)

Nothing has worked.

I seem to recall figuring this out before, but I can't remember what I did.

If you have an HDMI OUTPUT on your PC, on many you have to manually set the HDMI on the Video card as the default playback device, rather than the usual "speakers". Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Sound Panel and on the Playback you will probably have an icon for the HDMI, select that as the default playback device and you should get the PC audio in the HDMI signal.

I've been trying to implement a macro to apply a defined chart format to every selected chart. I've been using a post from this forum a few years back http://forums.techguy.org/business-applications/823459-macro-format-charts.html to help, and it's working great for a single chart. However, I'd like to enable it to run across several selected charts at once, and that is giving me problems that I can't get my head around.

I'm trying to use this code to run through the objects in the selection:

Sub ReFormatSelectedCharts()

Dim ThisChartObj As ChartObject

Dim ThisType As String
ThisType = TypeName(Selection)

Select Case ThisType

Case "DrawingObjects"

For Each ThisChartObj In Selection

Call FormatThisChart(ThisChartObj)

Next ThisChartObj

However, it gives me a type mismatch when I try to use it. I've investigated by implementing the following code instead of the for each loop:

X = Selection.Count
ReDim arrCharts(1 To X)
For i = 1 To Selection.Count
arrCharts(i) = Selection(i).Name
Debug.Print arrCharts(i)
Next iClick to expand...

Interestingly, it seems that the second chart in the selection is being treated as a button by Excel - so in the debug output in the case with three charts I'll see something like:

Chart 10
Button 1
Chart 5Click to expand...

while for two charts it'll just be
Chart 10
Button 1Click to expand...

I've tried it with different pairs and sets of chart... Read more

I have a secondary user account in this comp and I've been trying to set the account to have limited browsing capabilities, but I can't use 'submit' type inputs for that account (e.g. Google search, Yahoo search, or anything that submits data). Basically, nothing happens when I click on them. For the record, I use the latest 1st Security Agent's Safe Web Browser and Kaspersky Internet Security.

I tried setting the account to Administrator, problem persists.
I tried pausing Kaspersky, problem persists.
I tried enabling everything under 1st Security Agent, problem persists.

The strange thing is, I can browse without problem using that browser on my main account. I hope someone can help me pinpoint the problem.

I have a self-assembled desktop PC - full specs in the signature below, but in short, it has an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T processor on a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P mainboard, which uses a Realtek Azalia ALC887 on-board sound system. I have no loudspeakers and listen to the computer sounds exclusively through a Microsoft LX-1000 headset. I also have a Logitech C270 HD webcam that has its own microphone. My PC has 16 GB RAM, a SSD and a large HDD. It runs Windows 8.1 Update 1 with all Windows updates (Patch Tuesday was this week, but my problems had started before that and I'm sure they're unrelated).

Everything is working fine, except the audio, which started behaving strangely a few days ago for no apparent reason. The problems started suddenly and I can't think of anything that could have caused them. There were no hardware changes or any intervention in the hardware, nor did I install any new software that could have messed up things.

When playing music, it sounds muffled, with the volume very low and the voice and several instruments muted, while other instruments in the background arrangement sound relatively louder. No graphic equalizer is on, and this happens with any player software (Windows Media Player, VLC, Media Player Classic, etc.), and any source (MP3 music, audio CDs, DVDs, videos, etc.). There appears to be no hardware problem with either my headset or the onboard audio: when I run both Windows' native and Realtek's driver sound output tests, the test tune comes out... Read more

Currently my computer recognizes that there are headphones connected to it(which I have tested on my phone) , the speaker symbol and playback devices shows that the volume is on and active; I have the Realtek driver and the HD Audio Codec; I have tried changing my default devices in "Playback Devices"; both Windows Audio and Multimedia Class Scheduler are on, and yet I have no sound.

On a side note, every time I reinstall the driver it won't detect my speakers until I set it to AC.97 and, unlike the indicator found in "Playback Devices" the volume mixer is inactive even when sounds should be playing.

I've also tried a system restore to before I installed the heat sink, which is before this occurred, and looking around for audio options in my BIOS (M5A78l-M LX Plus, v.1033) to no avail. The only thing I can think of is to format or somehow v.1034 of my BIOS would do anything even though it was released five months ago and I just got this problem... Please help and thank you in advance.

Also, I've already tried virus scanning and chkdisk, if that is at all relevant.

A:No audio... after changing heat sink? (on-board audio, input is ok)

If you have the RealTek audio and "HD Audio Codec" that usually indicates that along with the RealTek you also have the generic Windows installed HD Audio Codec audio sound driver. If that is the case there can be conflicts and the HD Audio Codec needs to be uninstalled so your RealTek can properly operate.

If this is what's happening, go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the HD Audio Codec entry to highlight it and then LEFT click "uninstall". Restart the PC and check to see if the RealTek (and possibly an entry for HDMI audio if you have that) is the only entries in the Device Manager for Sound. The "Speakers" (RealTek) should be set as the default audio playback device in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel Playback section.

Hello, I use online accounting software (KashFlow) and part of entering invoices involves clicking into a date input field.  It is one of those where a little calendar shows when you click into the field.  You can also manually type a date into this field too. However. On my brand new Yoga 920 using Chrome and Firefox the date input fields are greyed out and a red 'no access' icon shows when you hover over them.  But you can still click it and the calendar pops up as normal.  The only difference is you can NOT type into them anymore. When the source for the page is viewed it looks like the fields have been designated 'readonly'. There is no such problem on any other computer I own, even when using Chrome or Firefox.  The date fields work perfectly well on these other computers - even on a Sony Xperia tablet I own. The only browser that works properly on my Yoga is Edge.  The date fields work as they should.  It's just Chrome (my main browser) and Firefox where they don't work. This seems like a Lenovo-based problem.  A little Google has revealed a couple of similar problems with other Lenovo users. Does anyone have any clue on how to fix this?  This is utterly bizarre behaviour and it's preventing me from working properly. I have attached a photo showing the problem when using Chrome.  These fields should never be greyed out. Thanks,Matt

I upgraded my laptop to Win 8.1 a few days ago and everything seemed to be working fine. I ran into an issue today using the desktop version of IE 11 where I can type text into the address bar but if I select a field on a web page, I am not able to type text into it. I normally use FireFox as my browser and it works fine (as does Chrome). If I bring up the Metro version of IE 11, I can enter text fine.

Anybody got any ideas how to fix this? It's not a big deal since I rarely use IE but it bugs me now that I know about it. I just checked on a netbook I upgraded and don't see the issue there.

Man, have I got a weird one for you. First thing first, I am by no means un-tech-savvy, so feel free to use technical terms if your have an idea about this. Let me explain:

So I've had my regular Windows 7 for a long time now. It's always worked perfectly. I decided to give the Windows 8 Preview a try, so yesterday I shrunk my Win 7 partition to 327 GB and gave my new Win 8 138 GB (number not relevant other than to show they have plenty of space). All is well so far, 7 still booted fine in the meantime.
So I pop in my Win 8 DVD, boot from it, install to the empty partition, no problems.

BIOS Screen, Boot Selection, Windows 8. Messed around, works great. Alright, let's go back to Windows 7 and use some of my programs.

BIOS Screen, Boot Selection, Pick Windows 7 Ultimate (Recovered), BIOS Screen, Black Screen, BIOS Screen, "Press control and S to enter boot setup" (weird), BIOS Screen, Long wait on a black screen with a mouse pointer (never happened before this, used to be almost instant), aaaand finally logged into the desktop. Well, that's weird. A lot of the startup programs aren't loading up. And my keyboard and mouse do nothing.

My keyboard and mouse are Logitech wireless combo usb dongle. Always used them. I tried different ports, a few restarts, and even tried a different wired usb keyboard.

Well that sucks. Went into BIOS screen, and Legacy USB devices was enabled (just to check), and I also tried toggling the EHCI hand off just for kicks. Noth... Read more

A:Windows 7 input devices no longer work after 7/8 dual boot

Sounds to me like Windows 8 got confused and overwrote data in the Window 7 registry. If System Restore is not an option, then a Repair Install is what I would do. And that might not work either. Repair Installs don't work when the permissions have been pooched, and who knows what Win8 did to your Win7 registry.

I have a windows 7 computer here is the system info.
I7 quadcore. MS-7582, I think
Standard hdd and a backup.
1000 watt ps.
MSi 660 Nividia graphics cards.

I have two of these they are almost identical.
For no apparent reason the one I'm having trouble with just started shutting down the PNP that were plugged in.

I could hear the "disconnect" sound. First I thought I had overloaded the PS, but that doesn't seem to be the case, all of the power ports seem functional.

I can get the computer to start, and go the windows start screen but with on input device I can't do anything.

Can't safe boot, can't boot into bios, I've tried the install disks and it won't boot from there and a recovery disk didn't work either.

Cleared the CMOS, pulled the battery.

Nothing helps.

Installed a 3.0 USB card which will give me power to my phone charger but nothing else.

Tried an old PS keyboard with a USB adapter that didn't work.
Bought an old keyboard with the PS plug. That didn't work.

Pretty wierd

I know this is a PIA for anyone trying to help. So I'm going to thank anyone in advance that takes the time to help.

I can get a new hard drive it that might help.

I can LAN together the two computers if that might help.

I can make whatever kind of start disk from the other computer. I have all the disks and keys.

About 6 month's ago I reinstalled my OS and all my software, shortly thereafter I noticed I had an issue where any sound that was coming through my headphones was being retransmitted through the mic, with further testing I found that this was not actually the case but rather any sound that would be output is being retransmitted as audio in, even if I had no speakers, headphones or mics connected. I have looked at and experimented with everything I could in every sound settings I could find, but nothing has fixed the issue.

Before anyone asks, I have tried updated drivers, the only way for me to stop the issue from occurring is to mute the mic in the recording control, but that stops me from using the mic altogether.

Please Help I need to be able to use my mic without recording anything that I am hearing as well...

OMG I got this very thing about 2 weeks ago on this "IT" guy's computer. It took some time to figure out but here is the guide I used to help me. Note it takes a lot of trial and error to narrow it down but it's doable.

Running Windows 7 Pro with all updates. I recently tried to open task manager, for the first time in a long time, to determine why a scheduled task did not run. When I opened task manager I received the following error dialog 113 times where "xxx" is the name of a task and was different for each of the 113 error dialogs.

The selected task "xxx" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh.

In the registry under TaskCache\Tasks I have only 12 entries, 11 of which point to the Windows\GWXTriggers folder and one that points to the Windows\Defender folder. I presume 113 entries are missing corresponding to the 113 error dialogs displayed when I open task manager.

All of the tasks appear in the TaskCache\Tree registry branch. All of the task files appear to be present in the Windows\System32\Tasks folder tree.*

How can I fix this problem? I assume I need to rebuild the TaskCache\Tasks registry entries from the files in*Windows\System32\Tasks folder tree. Is there a tool that will do this? Note that I DO NOT have a restore point from which I can recover the registry entries. Thanks.

My audio rear outs used to work, but even so, i was primarily using hdmi out from my video card. I was also diagnosing BSODs at the time and sent my mobo back to asus for an rma. When it got back, I placed it in a different case and attached the font panel audio.

Due to a new living circumstance, I decided to switch back to the normal audio out, as my hdmi sound is awful on my new monitor. Problem is, now i find that the onboard audio does not work.

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling and updating drivers, I have disabled all other drivers in the device manager, I have disconnected the front panel entirely. Nothing seems to re-enable my back panel.

Everything seems like in this thread Just got done building a new computer but... - techPowerUp! Forums
except my audio interface is ASUS, not MSI, and does not allow for front panel detection. (their solution was to "disable front panel jack detection" but this interface does not allow for this)

See the attached screenshots for interface.
Screenshot #1: As you can see, this is all the advanced settings allow. Also note that the bottom jacks are disabled, and does not see the speakers at all, even though they are plugged in.

Screenshot #2: This is with the HD settings enabled.

Screenshot #3: As you can see, there are no devices shown while HD audio is enabled, and the sound device manager does not see the speakers at all.

Hi All,After working perfectly fine since inception i.e. for years Fn+F3 (screen lock) and Fn+F5 (wireless) apparently stopped working on my X1 Carbon type 3460-1F4 (1st gen) under Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit some time earlier this month (I didn't notice exactly when). Reinstalling current HOTKEY/OSD version 8.86.25 doesn't help. If I go to C:/Program Files/Lenovo/HOTKEY/ and manually start TpFnF2.exe (which I suppose is what's called upon Fn+F3) the screen does lock; if I manually start TpFnF5.exe (which I suppose is what's called upon Fn+F5) I do get Wireless menu. Other Fn+Fx combinations that were also working since inception, e.g. Fn+F4 (sleep) and Fn+F8/F9 (screen brightness), still work. Is there a way to see which application (if any) is currently mapped to each of those combinations? Many thanks in advance!

Recently the Anniversary Edition update made a lot of changes. some are okay but I am still finding things that it decided to change some of my setting. I want to switch bask to some of my apps that I used for a specific file types.

My issue is there now a way to select apps by file type i.e. filename.abc is associated a specific application. That use to be an option in setting, what they have now seems very limiting or I just do not understand.

A:Apps by file type is no longer an option in Settings

What about this Settings element? Settings --> System --> Default apps --> Choose default apps by file type

Hi all,
Earlier this year "Check Spelling as you type" in Word 2003 worked fine. Now it does not and the red wavy line does not appear under wrongly spelled words. (unless I click Spelling and Grammar first).
I have tried every suggestion on this web page with no luck.
The registry item named '1' mentioned in the article was missing.
It's a real mystery as the 'check spelling as you type' still works in PowerPoint and also in Windows Live Mail.
I can reactivate 'check spelling as you type' in a document If I choose to run a spell check via the 'Spelling and Grammar' icon on the toolbar or from the 'tools' menu item. Only then does 'check spelling as you type' begin working again for the current document.
I tried a system restore to June which is our earliest restore point for 2014. (I have restore points for 2012 but inexplicably none for 2013. I'd rather avoid going that far back in time)
I re-installed Microsoft Office 2003
any other ideas?

A:Word 2003 - 'Check Spelling as you type' no longer works correctly

You have have tried everything I would have. Unfortunately Microsoft no longer supports Office 2003 products. So you're not going to get much help from them. Office 2003 support ended the same time that XP support ended.http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/support-has-ended-for-office-2003-HA103306332.aspx

I am currently trying to use both microphone and stereo mix at the same time without a sound card.

I would like to be able to both of the listed above in Windows XP SP3 but not entirely sure on what to do as I have literally hit a brick wall I have tried looking all over the net but no one seems to be able to answer this question.

I would greatly appreciate any/all help regarding this matter, a few people have stated you can use Stereo Mix and then somehow un-mute your microphone?

(The purpose of the above is because I am currently streaming and wish to use both sound and microphone at the same time)
(I am trying to accomplish this without having to spend out cash on a sound card and/or software)

I appreciate any help you guys/girls can provide,

A:Need help with Audio Input

If you have sound at all, you have a "sound card". It may be built into the board, but is still referred to as the "sound card" for all practical purposes.

So, that means that I'm not quite sure what the problem is that you're having. I'm assuming that it has something to do with using 5.1 sound as opposed to stereo, for example. In most cases, the enhanced output formats use the microphione jack as output for one of the speakers, disabling its ability to be used as a microphone (in which case settings related to the mic have no effect). If I'm close, you'll either have to use simple stereo (which should be fine from something streaming, anyway) or add another sound card for a mic setup.

Others who have done things like this more than I probably have other (and possibly better) answers.

Hey guy (and posibly gals). This is going to be quite n00bish, please forgive me. I have a audio input slot on the front of my PC and I want to play music through it. I have bought a Xbox 360 VGA Cable which has 2 phono leads for audio. The problem is my sound system don't have phono input. Can I play the sound through these ports? If so, How? I can't get any noise through it.

My friend has a setup with his cable TV where the signal is split into audio and video, and the audio is sent to some kind of stereo system. He uses it for those music channels on cable (I don't know much about this, but I can find out more if necessary). What I'm trying to help him figure out is how to get this data into a PC instead of the stereo. I don't have any knowledge of the sort of connections involved for this, could it be as simple as connecting the audio cable to a sound card, or are they usually different kinds of data/cables? Any response is appreciated (even if it's just asking for specifics). Thanks!

whenever i open task scheduler I keep getting the message

Error: selected task (o) no longer exists. To see the current tasks click refresh.

even after repeated clicking refresh the same message is displayed.

also on both task status and active tasks it says Reading data failed

wats happening?

A:Task scheduler (win7) fails to read data. Error: "selected task (o) no longer exits"

Can you not remove (o) from the scheduled task list?

If not then it might be that Task Scheduler has been corrupted by something, not sure how task scheduler is stored, but in system32 there is 3 files (taskschd.dll, taskschd.exe, TaskSchdPS.dll) that are all related to Task Scheduler, but not sure if any of them could be the cause of this issue.

Ive just upgraded my case and it got an audio input on the front (green and pink)

But for some reason I'm not picking up sound through it. I can get it from the motherboard but not the front of the case. Ive followed the user instructions as to plugging the port into the mobo but apart from that its not working.

If i go to control panel its sending sound out but I'm not picking it up

Any ideas?

You may have to move some motherboard jumpers around to properly configure the sound to the front panel. Carefully look through the motherboard manual once more

it looks that way - i dunno what you're supposed to do if you want to use the mike whilst gaming in 5.1 - is there not a mike input on the front?

it seems to be a trend amongst hardware designers to double up the 'ports' like that - for instance, on my netbook, the same jack socket is used for headphones and mike. you have to buy a special gizmo if you want to use both at the same time. is it really an economy thing - how much money do they really save by not giving us extra sockets?

don't worry, you shouldn't break or fry anything if you stick it into the wrong hole...

*edit* re-reading your post, you haven't got three inputs? speaker sockets are 'outputs'. maybe i'm being pedantic, but there is an important distinction.

Has anyone experience of using Magix Audio Cleaning Lab or Audacity with windows 7.

I used a free version of Magix on windows 7for a long time and it was fine but following a reinstall of windows 7 it will not record audio input from the via stereo mix. It will still record CD's though.

I have had a long email exchange with the Magix support but they have been unable to trace a problem.

I have just downloaded Audacity and find that also will not record sound output by my on board sound system.

Any ideas of what to try or check would be most welcome.
