Ideapad 100s - How to boot Linux from USB?

Q: Ideapad 100s - How to boot Linux from USB?

I recently just got a new Ideapad 100s and I have Windows 10 currently installed on the computer. I want to start using Linux, but I can't seem to boot the OS from my USB key. I have reached the BIOS on the computer, but there seems to be minimal options for the user to change. Below are links to two images of how the BIOS and Boot Menu look like currently. As you can see, the USB option is not available in the Boot Menu. Can someone instruct me on which settings I should change in order to start using Ubuntu?

Preferred Solution: Ideapad 100s - How to boot Linux from USB?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,  I have read some other posts on installing Linux onto a Ideapad 100s but have gotten anywhere. I am trying to install Kali Linux 2016.1-i386. I've made both a 32bit and 64bit usb installer but the Lenovo only reads "Windows Boot Manager" rather than my USB i have disabled secure boot and such. I would just love some help getting an ISO to run on my Lenovo. Thank you

I have been trying to find out how to boot my Ideapad 100S from usb but apparently this is not possible. I have made an image of my partition but if I need it I have no way of getting it back as I cannot boot outside of windows. What do I do if my os fails completely? I cannot believe that there is no way to boot from usb so if anybody knows how to do this I would appreciate any advice.

A:No boot options for Ideapad 100S?

Hello and welcome,

Is this an 11IBY?  The 11IBY requires  UEFI 32-bit boot media.  Legacy and 64-bit media won't work.

How did you create your image, and how are you trying to boot it?  Did you use the "create recovery drive" option?  I'd expect that to make bootable media.  (If that option exists - I don't have personal experience with that machine).

I believe in BIOS settings, you may have a UEFI vs. Classic (I forget the term it uses, something like Classic or Legacy or something like that) boot option.  Choose the nonUEFI option from BIOS.  Then, afterwards, the boot menus should work as you hope.  In theory, UEFI is safer and more secure, so you might want to re-enable when you're all done.   If you have a large USB drive, I suggest you make a system image too, before the wiping out of Windows 10 altogether. Keep in mind, a couple service packs into it, even Vista became a decent OS eventually.

A:Lenovo ideapad 100s-11iby problem with usb boot

Hello and welcome,

There are already some discussions of this on the forum.  Here are two:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/ll01_en/thread-id/36327

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-100-305-500-Edge/Lenovo-Ideapad-100s-change-from-32-bit-...

TLDR: the 100s-11iby has a UEFI only 32-bit BIOS.  Bootable install media has to be UEFI and 32 bit which is a rare combination.

I was getting an error message on my ideapad saying a .dll was missing. this had no noticeable effect on the performance of the computer. However, I decided to restore my computer by using the "One Key Recovery". I opted to remove everything rather than try to save my files. Since doing so the machine is now stuck in a boot loop. First you see the Lenovo screen then a blue screen saying my computer ran into a problem, gathering data etc. and then back to the Lenovo screen. I have trued the One Touch Recovery again with no success. Though I have recovery media, the machine will not let me select boot from USB, I have tried putting the recovery media on a mini SD card but the system won't see that either. I have tried doing the system reset numerous times with exctly the same results. Does anyone out there have any ideas please? Thanks

I basically had an issue with boot loop problems (most likely caused by the windows 10 update) that I decided to perform a factory reset to start from scratch however while doing so it boots up endlessly at 64% and I don't know what else to do. I tried going back to the Windows repair screen to choose a different option but it says that I don't have an administrator account to perform those changes since it was resseted to factory. Is there any way around this or should I declare a faulty hardware on this? Thank you

I have an 11" Ideapad 100S 11IBY and I clean installed ubuntu 16.04. I took backup of the entire eMMC drive, then wiped it clean and installed Ubuntu 16.04. Ubuntu worked fine until I performed the update by sudo apt-get update/upgrade after which it stopped booting and goes into a boot loop. I know how to make a 32bit firmware UEFI bootable USB but now the same UEFI bootable USB can't boot.I actually just need to boot as I have the clone of the entire eMMC with me on a separated hard disk which I can restore if there is a successful boot. I am just stuck with messages:"ubuntu boot failed" followed by,"Default boot deviceMissing or boot failed. Insert recovery media and hit any key, Then select Boot Manager to choose a new Boot Device or to Boot Recovery Media."The EFI boot devices options are always disabled in the boot menu and not even the Windows 10 USB (uefi) is working. I also tried the rEFInd boot manger on a bootable USB. Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Hi

I got a 2nd hand Lenovo Ideapad 100S. It came with Win10 installed but had someone elses profile and data.
(I am not sure if it originally had Win8.1 when it was shipped, there is no rollback option anymore)

My preference is to wipe the current installation completely by downloading Win10 and installing a clean copy off USB.

I also usually prefer to delete all partitions, including recovery because future reinstallations can be done from scratch via USB. (I don't need the option of reinstalling from recovery partitions , the extra space is more important)

I see a warning in the user guide however .....
"Do not delete or modify the Recovery Partition on a WIMBoot-enabled computer. If the Recovery Partition is deleted or modified, you may not be able to restore Windows to the factory status. For computer models on which WIMBoot is enabled, deleting the Recovery Partition may cause Windows to fail to start. How can I determine whether the Windows running on my computer is WIMBoot enabled? WIMBoot technology is normally enabled on copies of Windows 10 Update running on SSD (or eMMC) -only computer models."

What is the best way to do this?

Install a clean copy and remove the partition by booting off a USB, or should I not do this?

 Hi larrens ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

It's a good thing you posted first before proceeding with any clean installation.
Not sure what the Machine Number is to verify the details and specifications of your system.

But if you have a pc with a Windows Image Boot (or WIMBoot) you may not want to choose a clean installation.
This new deployment of installation is compressing part of a big OS file so that you can have an operating system that can only take small spaces intended for small storages (SSD).

Best option to wipe out previous owners profile is a have a fresh out of the box image is using the Puch button Factory reset (Novo key similar to Item 7 page 1). Simply shutdown the system and use the button to turn on, System Recovery option would provide One key recovery from initial backup to do it.

WIM boot are usually created thru OEM depot authorized by Microsoft . DIY for WIMboot maybe a bit complicated.
Click on underlined links for further review.

Hope this answered your query.

HiSo I wanted to run linux as well as windows in the same ssd, while saving my files in my hardrive. For that, I used 16gb of unnalocated space in my sdd, turning it in 25gb for the OS linux. After that I separated my hard drive in more or less half for windows, half for linux. All of it were not formated. Next I booted withmy usb, and installed linux in the SSD (EXT4 format) "/"format, put the /home in my hard drive space(EXT4), and created a swap area in my hdd matching my ram (8gb).The problem is, when I boot my laptop, it doesn't recognize that linux is installed and goes straight for Windows.  I changed the boot setting in bios to 1st one to boot is the SSD.In the image bellow is the information of my partitions. If you require some more information tell me and I will put it here.Thank you

Hi everyone, I need some help to install Linux on 100s-14IBR (14 inch model) laptop. This laptop use 128 SSD. In the "Disk Management" I can see there are three partitions 1. UEFI2. C:\3. Recovery Partition (the manual say this partition cannot be deleted or there will be problem) The Question is.. 1. How to properly install Linux on this laptop? Can I delete all the partition? The manual say not to delete recovery partition. 2. If one day I decide to install back Win 10, how can I do it since there are no copy of Win 10 that come with this laptop and no product key as well.

A:How to install linux on 100s-14IBR

Hi Luciusverus1995 , You can find your windows 810 key inside the UEFI bios of your ideapad , so if you want to reinstall it properly , its possible , when windows 10 installation program start , it will detect automaticly your activation key in the UEFI bios , but be sure to have the correct installation program for your windows 10 edition ( Home , Pro ... ) .You can download windows 10 iso at the microsoft official site , you will find an media creator software that allow you to download , and make a windows 10 dvd or usb thumdrive installation.  But you can install Linux next to windows OS , ( Using Ubuntu installation guide for exemple )Hope that help you

Unlike other laptops I've had which were able to run without the battery even in the laptop, i.e. Only plugged in, my laptop requires some level of charging before even turning on when plugged in.  is this normal or is there a setting to allow the device to turn on when plugged in. Quite a pain having to wait for it to re charge, isn't that the point of corded use? Also it seems to die pretty quickly and even when put to sleep when closed fizzles out quickly. Again is this normal?

I have a 100s 11.6 and, of course, the memory is full.  Almost instantly.  I bought a 64gb card for it but when I go into disk management and try to delete the D partition, all 3 choices are greyed out.  Do the same with C partition and the only choice is Shrink Volume.  Is there a work-around ?? Also, reading online, all I've read says the memory is soldered in on my model.  When I pulled the back off it, I see that the boards are plugged in.  I'd be real pleased if I could buy a larger capacity board to install.  Is that possible ??  Barring any of the above, I can manually copy and paste individual files from C drive to D drive to make a bit more room on C, but not sure which ones are safe to do so or how to go about it without messing up my OS.  Yah, I'm a newbie at this stuff and need hand-hold assistance. Thanks in advance.

I loved the size and price point of the Lenovo Ideapad 100S. However, of course because it only came with 30GB of hard drive space, Windows 10 basically maxed it out immediately. So, tonight I just tried to do something about it. I purchased a Samsung M.2 SSD 256 GB. I have a screenshot and I really think I installed it right. I just can't figure out how to get the bios to recognize it. Disk management doesn't show it at all. I rebooted into bios and reset defaults and restarted to no avail. What did I do wrong here? Is it just that the Ideapad can't recognize this particular M.2 SSD? Please see the screenshot I have attached. Any suggestions on how to get the bios to recognize this? Thank you ever so much for any suggestions! -Tom Tobey - Fort Wayne, USA
