Frequent explorer.exe crashes and restarts.

Q: Frequent explorer.exe crashes and restarts.

Heya.

I've been getting frequent explorer.exe crashes.

The eventviewer give this rather unhelpful log.

Code:

Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\mfc120u.dll

Is there anyway to find out whats causing this?

I've run AV scans (malware bytes, + windows defender), nothing was found.

Preferred Solution: Frequent explorer.exe crashes and restarts.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Suggest you try Teamviewer.  You can connect to it via a web browser.  Maybe it's the software that you're using on your home computer... just a guess.  From what I've read about the web browser interface, you don't need to install TV at work, it's strictly browser from your work.

Good Luck.

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

Hi,
The other day I did a recovery installation of drive C: The Recovery DVD (well 5 really) I made was right after the computer was turned on for the first time. So it's like it's "Out Of The Box". The D Drive I left alone. Don't worry I backed everything up first
Now Windows Explorer crashes quite frequently. To be honest it was doing the same thing before I reformatted.

This is what I ALWAYS used to get and then another saying it is restarting again....
Now it's changed a bit, I get like this but with Check Online for a solution,
Any ideas would be grateful. I have added the results of the SFC scan (Completed with Full Admin Rights)

Hi,

I'd be most grateful for any help. I've been using a Mac for years, and am now using a Windows machine (Dell Inspiron 8200, Win. XP Pro, 1.6ghz, 384 RAM).

I've started having repeated crashes when using Windows Explorer. Trying to open folders, just by double clicking on one folder and then a nested folder will crash it. Trying to open a file by navigating through the open menu in any application will crash it. I get repeated error messages that "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and will close now."

Other times, I get messages along these lines: "The instruction at "0x77f67f26" referenced memory at "0x00000000." The memory could not be "written." Click OK to terminate progarm.”

Another error message says: “Windows Explorer. AppName explorer.exe. AppVersion 6.0.2600.0 Modname: NTdll.dll ModVer 5.1.2600.0 offset 00017f26.”

This started a few months ago and seems to be getting worse. I do NOT think I have Service Pack 1 installed. (I tried to install it but encountered problems and gave up.) I do have Windows set to do automatic updates.

I have run Norton Utilities, and I use a disc defragger (Executive Software Disckeeper). I don't know what else to do. I wrote MS, and they write back saying I have to call Dell. I am loathe to do this as I have hit absolutely rampant incompetence whenever I've called Dell.

For this laptop, explorer.exe will frequently crash (faulting module typically ntdll.dll). Processor will also hit 100% but subside before I can get a look at what is going on. Is it malware or simply too much tinkering? Looking online it seems context menus might be at fault but explorer will crash while I'm sitting idle. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I am having a lot of problems with my Windows XP Pro (SP3). Here are the problems:

1. After logging in to Windows 50% of the time my computer freezes up either all by its own or while I try to open a program or a browser. It might result in a BSOD or I have to do a forced restart.

2. I frequently receive errors on explorer.exe and Win32, that these have to close. (I have posted a few errors from Event Viewer below)

3. At times I get BSOD's. While most of them do not refer to a specific problem at times I get an INPAGE_DATA_KERNEL_ERROR (Win32k.sys is also mentioned in the blue screen)

4. Every time I shut down Windows I get a message explorer is not responding and I manually have to do an 'End Program' to complete the shut down

I am running Windows XP Pro (SP3). I had been getting a lot of BSOD's and as a result I formatted my laptop and reinstalled Windows (from a bootable USB as my CD/DVD drive isn't working). Since then explorer.exe is crashing frequently and so is Win32. Also, when I am on Firefox and right click on a link to open it in a new tab the system freezes up for a short while. When I start my computer and try running a program there is 50% chance it will end up in a BSOD, usually the BSOD's do not have a particular error message but the last one said Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error and referred to Win32k.sys.
I also wanted to mention that I had a virus attack a few days back that completely crippled my Google Chrome (its still not working even after reinstalling), however Avast and SuperAntispyware claim to have taken care of those.

I first noticed that explorer would crash a few weeks ago after I stumbled across an infected .wmf file while surfing the net. I was logged in under my limited account and my anti-virus detected the .wmf but it could not take action, I believe due to the fact I use system restore. I finally was able to delete the .wmf after which I ran several different scans and could not detect anything except Microsoft (R) HTML Application host had been altered (24,576 bytes to 24,064 bytes), so I replaced the file (note: explorer was already crashing before this point). The only time it seems to crash is once in a while when I click on My Document, Control Panel, My Pictures etc...

My explorer.exe constantly crashes and restarts; however, when I go into safe mode it works perfectly which means it is a driver problem. So I began to use the app, DriverView, to look at all the drivers I have and sure enough I find 3 very suspicious files that are most likely the cause to my problem.They looked suspicious because their file type was listed as unknown and their description was blank.the three files were:dump_dumpata.sysdump_dumpfve.sysdump_msahci.sysThey are said to be located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers but when I looked there i couldn't find them. I tried scanning for viruses in normal and safe mode using AVG but I found nothing. I then uninstalled AVG and installed Avira. I also scanned in normal and safe mode using Avira but I still found nothing. The virus blockers i used also were updated. For some reason I just can't findi them. Hi this just started happening today. I'm not sure what happened to trigger it. I have run virus scan and it didn't found any infected files.

Explorer.exe will load when my machine starts up. About every 5-10 seconds, it will close, meaning my desktop blinks off. Another 10 seconds later (or around that) explorer.exe will start again and my desktop will come back.

Eventually, it stops trying to load and the desktop stays off. I can go to task manager and run explorer.exe to repeat the process of having explorer.exe run, stop, run, etc.

I don't receive any error messages when this happens.

This machine has the latest Microsoft updates incl service pack 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I run Xmarks within FireFox, I thought this was the problem because Xmarks as of yesterday asks me every 40 seconds if I want to sync my bookmarks, if I choose cancel, Windows Explorer will crash then restart.

When Firefox is closed, Explorer continues to crash and restart, almost every 30-35 seconds. I have Windows 8.1 up to date, with all the latest updates, FireFox is up to date. As of writting this post, Windows Explorer has crashed and restarted (5) times.

I have been facing issues when my Dell Inspiron 13 (7000 Series) laptop wakes up from hibernation. After unlocking the login screen the laptop screen shows all the applications left open, as well as the Start Menu which is opened. However, nothing in the Windows taskbar, Windows searchbar and Windows Start Menu works and they are effectively frozen. The mouse and other application are still working but their view is obstructed by the open Start Menu. As Security Options, Task Manager and Command Prompt are very difficult to open in such a case in almost all instances I had to force shutdown the laptop.
I have traced the issue via Event Viewer and have discovered logs which indicate Dell Backup & Recovery as the source of the fault. Below is the logs for the last instance of the crash, a total of 8 crashes occurred in the past 30 days:

Hello,

After days of troubleshooting via trying resolution methods from various forums, I finally have to submit a help topic, because I am out of ideas short of re-installing windows.

explorer.exe crashes whenever I do one of the following items:
- Right click on desktop to see display properties; the right-click menu never comes up; explorer just crashes. (I can get to the display properties fine through control panel.)
- Open up Start/Programs and enter an application sub-menu. Explorer doesn't crash until the sub menu opens, sometimes instantly, sometimes in a few seconds.
- Hovering over an icon on my desktop. Explorer does not crash when hovering over shortcuts, only when I hover over a file sitting on the desktop.
- Trying to open My Computer. A window opens up and the flashlight appears momentarily, then explorer crashes, which also closes the window.
- Trying to browse files via Start/Run or through Task Manager. Explorer crashes after several seconds, regardless of which drive or directory I am browsing. There may be an additional pattern there too as the time it takes explorer to die varies, but I have yet to determine a pattern if there is one. For Start/Run, the window closes, for task manager, sometimes the window freezes when explorer crashes and restarts, and the task manager icon in the task bar never goes away until I pass over it with my mouse.

Hi Guys,

This issue has been driving me nuts for the past few months and I've found no solution as yet.

Windows explorer (windows 7 Home Premium, SP1, 64 bit OS) will frequently crash with seemingly no pattern (opening directories, scrolling through files, copying files etc) even when running in safe mode. I've tried various malware applications and hard drive
checks, but to no avail.

Event viewer gave the following information after the last crash.

Hello,

So for the past month or so, explorer.exe has been crashing continuously. It happens on several occasions...

-Most notable when I first boot up Windows 7, it crashes and restarts in an assiduous manner, for maybe 10-15 times until it stops suddenly and starts working again

-When accessing files which force explorer to open, e.g. when I open a document, open the 'My Downloads' folder, and such locations (the crashing and restarting scenario occurs in every situation)

I haven't found a solution as of yet. I even tried ending the process in Task Manager and running it again... with the result of it continuing to freeze and restart even after I run it form Task Manager, until as usual, it suddenly stops crashing and starts working again.

Is there any possible solution to this which doesn't involve any type of System Restore/OS wipe?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. PC is defragged, registry and junk files cleaned using CCleaner and Disk Cleanup, issue still persists. SpyBotS&D cannot detect any malware, and ESET NOD32 cannot detect any viruses or infections either.

A:explorer.exe crashes and restarts when certain actions are performed

This is usualy caused by a bad file filter installed in explorer. And you can usualy trace it down to what type by noticing what files are in the folders you are opening.

Unless this happens at the default "libraries" or "Computer" entries as well...

Can you shed any light on where it does and maybe does not crash?

Did you install anything (Codecs, Office programs etc) just before this started?

What could be causing this?

I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

A:Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

HI, I had no problems this morning, but after I put some videos from my camera onto my computer,and then tried to upload them to youtube, I couldn't do it. I am the admin of the computer and logged in under my account but it does not matter what account I log in under it always crashes. Is there any other way to run the CMD sfc /scannow?

A:Problem- Right click on anything and explorer crashes and restarts

Hello Dave84 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You can start up the System File Checker tool at the Start>Run command line. (refer to image attached)

That won't require any right clicking on anything. You could even add the Takeownership option to the right click menu but will need to first repair the present Windows installation since this sounds like one or more system files are corrupted.

The other thought on this is a possible malware infection leaving you with corrupted files like the explorer.exe sheil file used by Windows Explorer as well as the Computer desktop icon for browsing drives.

Hi. Today morning I started my PC and just after the start up Windows Explorer crashed and restarted and then did (and does) the same every 10-15 seconds. I googled the problem and did following steps (not in the same order as below) which didn't resolve the issue:

- restarted few times and switched off PC completely;
- tried to fix registry with Vit Registry Fix;
- did SFC /SCANNOW and it finished with information that some issues couldn't be fixed;
- ran Malwerbytes with no malware found;
- did a full Kaspersky Internet Security scan with no viruses found;
- did a clean boot (all non-windows services were not used) and it still crashed;
- did a diagnostic start up (so only basic windows services were used) and it helped;
- I wanted to do a system restore but Windows doesn't have data on any restores, meaning I probably haven't started the service (doesn't it make it automatically?);

Other info:
- system works fine in Safe Mode and diagnostic start up, thus eliminating issue with external applications;
- when in normal mode and crashing I looked at processes appearing and disappearing and found out that at the crash process the file dllhost.exe disappears then and shortly after appears back (it may or may not be relevant);
- I didn't do any major updates yesterday (only updated Steam platform and installed one new game);
- I can't do perfmon /report as in Safe mode it doesn't display anything and in normal mode I don't have enough time to start the applicati... Read more

A:Windows explorer crashes (and restarts) on system start-up.

Just an update - based on my experience with "fixing" the system, I've decided to back up the data and make a fresh installation (no point in loosing more time on trying to resolve the issue but just spend the time on new system and at least enjoy a faster Windows for some time). Funny though that a year ago I had to do the same due to some dll corrupt file (it was much worse then). I really love Microsoft!

P.S. Thanks for reading this thread, if you think you may add something (so in the future if someone looks for info on how to fix it) feel free to add some advice.

Dear Seven Forums,
I'm looking for help regarding my pc that I built 3 months ago.

I am having random crashes of all types:

- 99% of the games crash to desktop after 10-15 minutes (Overwatch,Eu4,Hoi4, CIV V is OK,Witcher 3)
- can't use chrome / firefox for more than 1-2 minutes because of either 'Oops.. something went wrong' or the applications close without error.
- Randomly appearing crashes of antimalware-service and explorer.exe

and of course many blue screens while 'browsing' ,playing

What I've also noticed that I can go playing EU4,Warthunder 3-4 hours without issues and then suddenly keep BSODing the next 4-5 restarts.
I've filled out the PC specs in my profile.
What I've already tried:
-I've reinstalled Win7 3 times and reinstalled Win10 2 times. All of the fresh installs resulted in blue screens.
- I've also tried adjusting BIOS settings like setting tad higher RAM voltage, CPU voltage, running the PCIE in 8x or 4x Mode, and using XMP settings. The recent 3-4 blue screens happened with all the BIOS settings reverted using 'Restore default settings'.
- I've been using 2x4 2400Mhz Kingston DDR4 Rams the first 2 months, but replaced them with the Corsair ones in hopes of solving the BSODs (I've done a clean install + BIOS reset after replacing the RAM)
-edit: I've also tried disabling hardware acceleration in hopes of solving the chrome crashes

Looking for tips to finally be able to identify the faulty driver/hardware

Thanks

Hi there,

? OS - Windows 7x64
? What was original installed OS on system? Same as above
? OEM version from Alienware (Or maybe Dell, I'm not sure which of those actually does it)
? Aurora R3 2011
? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? 2011 I guess, nope.

So the problem is that midway through gaming and as of late when browsing the web in search of a cure it restarts itself. What is weird is that it only happens to certain games, first just Hearthstone then Hand of Fate, then Skyrim, then Endless space. I also play Rome2, Civ5 and Payday2 regularly but so far those haven't restarted the pc.

I don't get a BSOD, turning off automatic restart doesn't BSOD either. It doesn't create a minidump, even with the settings recommended here. Malwarebytes and Combofix don't detect anything. Drivers are all up to date, I cleaned the dust from it as well. I rearranged the RAM, checked each individually in each slot (for completeness), ran memtests.

The pc isn't overheating as I've had hours long game sessions of the ones I am able to play but the others crash within the first 5 or so minutes.

I sort of figure it has to somehow be linked to NVidia doing weird things. As a 302.xx kernal used to cause BSOD crashes frequently but I uninstalled and then re-downloa... Read more

You really do need to take Sobeits advice in your other thread.

And please don't create multiple threads about the same problem, it is against forum rules.

I'm running a Windows Xp Pro Machine and frequently, while playing games such as GTA 2, Call of Duty United Offensive and more. Either
A. The whole computer restarts without warning
B. The game quits out and it says the Service apps and Control need to be closed and then it goes to a count down saying
C:\windows\system\comm isnt responding or something
and it makes a count down from 60 and restarts..
This a very serious problem...
I need it fixed WITHOUT reinstalling windows, due to the fact that I have no working version of Windows anywhere..

Hi guys,

I've been having non-stop problems with one of my machines that runs on Windows 7. Certain applications, such as streamed content (skype video calls, hardware accelerated flash) or otherwise games seem to be able to cause the machine to crash, either freezing and stuttering, or automatically restarting.

The machine was built new less than a year ago and I've had the problems the entire time, however they are becoming more and more prevalent.

I don't seem to have any issues with my actual hardware (my memory is fine, and the machine is quite happy to run normally in XP/Vista). I do however require Windows 7 and a stable 64-bit environment for work purposes, so I can't switch to an older OS. All of my drivers are up to date.

Since there's no BSOD, it's quite hard to pin down. It's been suggested before that there might be a problem with Intel's SpeedStep tech and Windows 7 on certain configurations, and disabling SpeedStep did seem to mitigate the problem for a short period of time.

Anyone have any ideas?

System spec:

OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
Mobo: Asus P7P55D Pro
Bios: ver 08.00.15 (default)
CPU: Intel Core i7 860
RAM: 8Gb Corsair Dominator
GPU: Palit 1Gb GeForce 9800 GT
Many thanks,

Luke
