Installed new graphics card and drivers - Black screen with white box cursor on start up

Q: Installed new graphics card and drivers - Black screen with white box cursor on start up

Hi, my video card died this morning so I installed one from a different computer. I have a three year old Dell Vostro 410 running XP Pro. I took out an nvidia G310DE from a different Dell computer and put it into my computer. I managed to get a display so I uninstalled the old ATI drivers, restarted and installed the new nvidia drivers. When I restarted, I got a black screen with a white square cursor after the windows splash screen. I can boot into safe mode with no issues though. I've tried the driver from the nvidia website, the dell CD, and let windows look for drivers. Each time, I get the same result.

I've been at this for the past 4 hours now and can't think of what else to do. Thanks for your help!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

<<I've tried the driver from the nvidia website, the dell CD, and let windows look for drivers>>

Why would you use the drivers from the Dell CD...which I would think are only for the Intel onboard video?

Did you disable the onboard video in the BIOS settings?

Did you completely uninstall all the ATI software...both via Device Manager and via Add/Remove Programs?

I think I'd take a look at Device Manager and see what's reflected there.

Hello, my problem started when I realized that my email account was hacked and sending out random messages to my contacts. From there, I ran MalwareBytes. It found like 18 files and deleted them. After that, windows would not start in normal mode.

From Bleeping Computer I downloaded the Farbar recovery scan tool used it and then ran it again to fix. Computer worked fine until I tried to download Norton Security. Now I back to the same black screen.

What should I do now?

I've been having some weird oddities with my computer as of late. Completely at random, my screen will go black (for around 3 - 5 seconds) before eventually coming back on again and I'm noticing some weird, small, white horizontal lines randomly appearing across my monitor for about half a second, then disappearing. At first, I thought I was seeing things... but a friend of mine can back me up on this.

It seems to start and stop randomly, but I think it's getting worse. Often, the screen will go black, come back on, and then the process repeats several times before it seems to settle down back to normal again. The white lines appear while the computer is doing this, but not when the screen has gone back. They dot all around the screen, it's very hard to describe them... it doesn't look good, anyway.

I am convinced this is not my monitor. I have a funny feeling it's my Nvidia GTS 250 graphics card bugging out. I've checked the fan and the temperatures and all seems fine. I've re-installed the drivers and it still happens. I've dusted and re-inserted the card, no dice. It seems to happen completely at random and it's bugging me.

Has anyone had a similar problem before, or might have a clue what is causing this? I was planning on upgrading my machine in March anyway, but I was hoping my GPU might last a little longer (I've had it for two years or so now.)

Cheers.

A:Is my graphics card dying? - Black screen, odd white lines.

I'd be interested to know what your fps benchmark is. evga oc scanner is good. I have dual 460 gtx and the benchmark is around 95 fps. When I installed these in a new board my screen would go black when I paused for anything i.e. to agree to a download. I get a small vertical line loading a game but it didn't worry me for some reason. My benchs are ok, not impressive. After 2 or 3 restarts it hasn't frozen since. If your temps are good and it benchmarks ok I don't know enough and I'm not confident enough to answer questions. Somebody will help you. They put up with me. This is the best forum I've been on yet.

Hi all, heres a quick run down of my problem. about a month ago my pc started having errors at bootup. it would get as far as the desktop, then freeze the desktop, allowing me to still use my mouse but i couldnt select anything and the system would hang. After restarting on average about 5 times it would then work and my pc would run perfectly.

about 2 weeks ago i had a blue screen crash that mentioned something about the display drivers. (i was using a radeon 4870) i figured this, with the startup problem must be my graphics card on its way out. one day i started my pc and was greeted by my 1st 'black screen' with cursor and decided enough was enough and took out my graphics card, leaving only the on board graphics (radeon 4250). my pc worked fine for a few days and i decided to try and work out if the problem was software of hardware related so i reinstalled my 4870 card. this immediatly booted me to the black screen with cursor so strait away i took it out again.

so now im back to my on board graphics, however this time the problem has not gone. i am writing this via safe mode as i am still getting the black screen with cursor appear at start up.

ive tried start up repair which says there is no problem, ive tried disabling and uninstalling/re installing the onboard graphics but still the black screen.

anyone have any ideas short of re installing windows? thanks in advance

Welcome aboard.

First, you are to clean the dust inside the computer, reseat the ram modules, clean the edges with cotton clothes, Reseat the sata and power cables, update the display driver.

Those actions may change the situation there.

My encrypted Thinkpad T470 (2yrs old) has suddenly begun "crashing" during use. This doesn't seem to be triggered by any particular programs or user behaviour that I can identify, and once it happens it will occur again relatively soon if I restart it without a long rest. What happens is that the screen goes black, and white boxes flicker in and out. Sometimes I see white lines near the top, which I associate with graphics card issues, but I've never seen this white boxes pattern before. The laptp will not project on an external monitor, so it's not just a display issue. It does not fully shut down when this happens, but rather requires a force quit in order to restart. It restarts normally until it crashes again. Any ideas on what is happening here? Am I on the right track to suspect graphics card issues? Thanks.

Hello,

I'm from belgium so sorry for my bad english. Here is my config:

Alim: ANTEC Neo HE430

GC: MSI Geforce 7900gs (fanless)
Ram : 2*1 Go Corsair
Pro: Intel Core2Duo 6600
2*HDD SATA 250Go
Windows XP SP3

My problem:

I've just format my computer and re install windows xp. All is ok but when i try to install the graphic drivers from the nvidia site (ver 195.62), my graphic card is seen as Geforce 7900 GTX :-(
I also try with the old cd drivers from MSI and same problem...
I also try to take off the card from the computer and replace it... no change

So I think that is not so bad and that i m able to work with this config... but the other problem is:

When i reboot my computer (windows -> restart), my screen still black when the pc reboot. I can hear the windows startup sound.... I think that my computer boot normally but without the graphic card :-(
When i trun off the PC and turn it on, screen came back and windows appear...

My question is :

Problem with drivers ?
Problem with graphics card ?
Problem with motherboard ?
Problem with alim?

Thank you to have read me and maybe answer...

Hi: if your PC came with W8, you need to change 2 BIOS settings when you install a non-HP video card. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03653200 If it didn't then I don't know what the problem could be (other than a defective new video card).

Hi Yall,
So I have successfully (I think) installed my new Radeon R7 250 "low profile" graphics card on my Dell Optiplex 9020.  I plugged it in the motherboard, started up the computer then went to Device Manager to update the drivers--which I did.  Side note: Ever since plugging the graphics card into the motherboard, some tasks like starting programs or starting windows take 2-10X as long as they used to.  Anyhow, it then asked for a restart, which I did.  The computer still took extra long to start any program, and when I plugged the monitor into the graphics card all I got was a black screen.
Take two:  I then read that I should have uninstalled my current graphics driver (Intel integrated HD graphics) before I installed my new graphics card, but failing this, I could uninstall my old graphics card and change the default graphics card in the bios.  I uninstalled the old card and went to the bios, but could not change the default...can't remember exactly what it called it, graphics controller or something.  I could see that intel HD graphics was still the default (this is after uninstalling intel HD graphics and then restarting) but could find no way to change this.  Supposedly dell will make the switcheroo on its own...but it doesn't seem to have.
Take three:  Next I physically removed the graphics card, restarted the computer, then physically inserted the graphics card again, then started the comp... Read more

With windows 7 x64

I have seen many questions answered about this but I feel like I have slight different problem. Many of these issues have been solved by downloading or buying a windows 7 recovery disc. My problem is obviously from the start up, I get the black screen with the blinking cursor. Windows shut down on me the other night as it looked to be preparing to download an update and after it did 1 update, it went to restart and failed to load windows. I cannot press F8 and get to the recovery menu. Now I have a Dell Inspiron 17R N7110. One thing I have found different from the normal windows 7 recovery disc is that it does not include the option "Windows Complete PC Restore" where the "System Image Recovery" is. I don't think I used this to restore the PC the one time that I did it. I believe I used the option at the bottom of the dell recovery partition named "Dell Backup and Recovery Manager". But being unable to get into the advance start up options with F8, I cannot access the Dell recovery manager. So I used the windows 7 recovery disc that I burned with my other computer which is not a dell and the options do not work. I cannot system restore, and when it does work, it still wont boot. There are no problems with the start up repair. The temperatures are normal. The diagnostic test available from the boot options menu verified that all my hardware worked properly and even everything says my OS boot up is working ... Read more

A:Black screen with white cursor after log in

B_S2 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Since it works OK in safe mode, then it's SOMETHING that is being loaded at startup that is trashing the display.  Could be a runtime program; could be drivers, could be a Service. No easy way to tell. Boot into safe mode, enter MSCONFIG in the start area.  When that opens, disable ALL the start items. Reboot. If the PC now works, it's one (or more) of those items -- and you have to go through a tedious process of re-enabling them one at a time until the PC fails again.  The last one you re-enabled was the problem. Here's a tutorial on how to do this: http://www.howtogeek.com/74523/how-to-disable-startup-programs-in-windows/ If the PC still does not run right with all the startup items disabled, then go back into msconfig and select the Services tab.  Check the box to hide the MS services.  Then, disable the upper half of the Services.  Reboot. If problem is fixed, then you have to go through a tedious process of re-enabling one Service at a time until you find the one that is the problem. If the problem is not fixed, then disable the other half of the services.  Repeat as above. No easy way to do this ...Good Luck

Hi guys,

I'm having some trouble with my computer and I'm hoping someone can help, it is a Dell system 8400 with a pentium 4, 3GHz Processor and 512Mb RAM. Basically I was working away on my computer and I think I got the "blue screen of death". I thought the computer would be OK if I restarted it but now it just turns on and goes to a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the top left corner. I have looked around on the internet and can see this is a problem quite a few people have had.

Now when I turn the computer on I have the options of pressing F2 or F12.

F2 allows me to enter setup which is a menu with a blue screen with options such as 'System', 'Drives', 'Onboard Devices' etc.

F12 allows me to enter the 'boot menu' where the options are:
* Onboard SATA harddrive
* Onboard USB or CD-Rom drive
* System Setup
* Hard Drive Diagnostics
* Boot to utility partition

I think I know what caused me to get this problem. I was trying to obtain data files, however the website I was on told me to run a setup of a program. I was dubious about this as when I double clicked the setup file, the first install page was in Spanish and I couldn't understand it, I pressed the icon which looked like a piece of paper as I thought that might be the option to change the language and that is what caused the blue screen to occur.

Also I would like to retrieve files off the hard drive if it turns out that I need to reinstall windows. Thanks for your time.

Watto

A:XP: Black screen, white cursor..... Help!!!!

hi Watto, press F2 to enter set up and look in 'Drives' to see if your hard drive is recognised. If it is, then go to F12 and run hard drive diagnostics. You can also go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download their own diagnostics which have to be burned to disk as a .iso (not just copied to disk). Now as for retrieving files, you could take the hard drive out of the computer, place it in a usb caddy and attach to a working computer via usb to see if you can retrieve the files. Before trying this however I would see if the drive is recognised in your BIOS. When you got the blue screen you mention did you see any error messages? Be grateful if you could post back to let us know your progress.

Dear sir or madam,

I have been having some problems with me dell inspiron 6400, running windows vista.

Recently someone dropped it.

I turned it on, but only a black screen loaded with a white cursor after the green progress bar screen
I then turned it on using safe mode and it loaded fine. I then turned it back on in normal mode and it worked.

However, after doing this process twice, now i am unable to even load safe mode.

I have tried to reinstall factory defaults, but i have been unsuccessful in trying to use both ctrl f11 or f8, (found these form google searching)

Is there any other way to restore factory defaults without the disc on my system, or do you know what might be wrong with it?

Thank you very much in advance.

So I'm trying to help a person I work with whose computer's been having problems. I've come across several problems in the past and always been able to fix whatever software/hardware issues I've had. So I figured I'd help. Her problem however is something I've never seen before, and just recently read about.

First things first, she's using Windows Vista Premium 64-bit edition.
Her computers problem: After boot menu it goes to a black screen with a blinking white cursor.
She said it was fine one day, not the next. Some business did something or whatever and it stopped working. Whatever the case, it's not working now.

This problem from what I've read is caused by several different things.
1.) Computer not waking from sleep/hibernate mode.
2.) Software issues or faulty hardware
3.) Possibly a issue with the Bios.

The most likely causing the issue seems to me like it would be software. Her Bio's are fine and I reset them to normal.
Her hard drive is working because it gets to the boot menu at least before failing to enter windows.
So the most likely choice causing this is software. Right? I mean, that's the only thing I can see causing it. I also tried putting her computer into safe mode..... then realized it didn't even seem to have a safe mode. Does that version of windows support safe mode? No keys said enter safe mode and the typical F8 didn't work.

She doesn't have a windows CD because apparently it never came with her computer when she bought it. And she has a lot of ... Read more

I'm working on a friend's computer, I dunno what he did... I probably don't want to know what he did, but it is irrelevent. It's an Acer Extensa 5620, Costco special, nothing special here. henever the computer boots up it boots up to a completely black screen, the only thing there is the white cursor. Now I assumed this was a "screen hide" virus kind of like the icon hider, but I'm completely lost here. Usually you can get around something like that by starting in safe mode, well not this one. I've tried starting up in safe mode and I get the same result. I've also tried going through the setup screen, but nothing there seems out of place. I can't really run anything, or do -anything-. then you get a black screen with "windows did not resume properly last time it was shut down blah blah blah safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt or start windows normally" if you choose a safe mode you get the "files loading" screen which details all the start up files, if you click "start windows normally" you get the little green loading bar.

After the loading process is complete the white cursor shows up and everything is black.

A:Black screen white cursor (Help please)

Black screen errors are very difficult to diagnose and fix.  Even more so since it won't get into Windows at any point.
What happens when you tap F8 during startup - can you get into Safe Mode?
If so, backup your stuff from there.

If not, you can slave your hard drive to another computer and copy the data over from there.
You can also backup from the command prompt if you're comfortable working at the command line

Windows doesn't automatically set restore points as they take up a fair amount of hard drive space.
You have to tell it to do it.

I'd suggest that you concentrate on backing up your data.
And once that is done, wipe the hard drive clean and start over with a fresh install of Windows.

Good luck!

Have 2 identical machines.
IBM 8090 series(Small Form Factor)
P4 3.0GHz HT
1GB RAM (PC3200)
40GB hard drives
Windows XP Pro SP2
Both were running fine until someone hit a power pole down the road. When power resumed, turned machines back on.Or tried to.
One immediately (2-3 seconds) goes to a black screen with a flashing cursor in the corner.
I have already:
1 disconnected data and power cables then reseated them
2 removed and reseated the RAM modules
3 tried a different monitor
4 reset the CMOS by removing the battery for 30 minutes
5 replaced CMOS battery.
6 tried booting from a Linux live CD
7 installed a blank formatted hard drive to get Linux going.
All of the above got no results.
Out of curiousity, I removed the hard drivefrom the working "twin" and installed it into its non-working brother. Upon hitting the power button, booted right up.
Machine in question will not even go to Safe Mode so that I can check the event logs or do any scans.
Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Hi, I have a desktop computer with windows 7 (Inspiron 545).

When I turn it on the logo of windows loading appears normally but after it I only get a black desktop with a big white cursor (low resolution?) but there is nothing else there, no icons, no task bar, etc. just emptiness. I wish I could give out more details but there is nothing more I can do. I tried with F8 to load recovery and do a factory re-install but the option is not there, even though I know the hard drive has a partition for it, the only thing that it's there is check for errors (or fix errors) but that didn't help. I would do a full format and re-install the operative system but I don't have the original dvd.

Thanks!

I have done two things that may have led to this problem.

---

1) I scanned my system with Malwarebytes and it detected four things that were quarantined and deleted:

RiskWare.Tool.CK
RiskWare.Tool.CK
Hacktool.Agent
Hacktool.KeySteal

I have no knowledge on technical matters, but I'm assuming maybe removing these things might have caused something?

---

And 2) I recently used chkdsk to scan for errors and remove bad sectors. This is basically what was changed according to my chkdsk report:

Cleaning up 127 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9
Cleaning up 127 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9
Cleaning up 127 unused security descriptors

---

Ever since I did both of these things, I've been getting the black screen of death with a moving white cursor
so I have reason to believe either one of those two things might have caused the problem, because before that, everything was fine.

Basically, it'll go to the black screen for like five minutes, and then it'll boot up as normal.

Could someone please tell me the reason for this, as well as a solution?

A fast reply would be greatly appreciated, because right now, I am panicking.

Thank you so much.

I doubt if the problem is caused by either, but lets test the hard drive. Download crystal software (make sure you use the correct download, the site is full of pay stuff). If the HD is bad it will show.

A drained battery led my laptop to shut down unexpectedly yesterday. Since then attempts to boot the computer result in a black screen, white cursor.

The problem replicates when I - [] attempt to boot the computer normally [] attempt to boot in safe mode (w/& w/o cmd prompt) [] attempt to boot to the last good configuration. During the course of this issue, I received a prompt to system restore (which replicated the issue) and I believe that there was a separate system recovery prompt which indicated that I would need to boot from a disk (which I do not have).

I was able to do a bit of research on another computer that I have access to, and from what I discovered, it appears that this issue happens to occur for a number of reasons. If any of you have helpful tips for an individual in my position, I would be highly appreciative.

I recently had an issue, whereby my computer would no longer startup for unknown reasons. In order to fix this, i found a windows 7 cd (previously windows 8) and installed it. It was all going well until i attempted to update my graphics card driver. Each time i do so, i get as far as the windows logo on startup, the computer somewhat reboots, and it goes straight to a black screen with only my mouse visible. Every time, i have to go into safe mode, uninstall the driver, and carry on without. My graphics card doesn't appear in the 'windows experience index' under either 'graphics' or 'gaming graphics'. Any help would make me a very happy boy, thanks!

Hello, I work for a computer repair store and we have seen this problem crop up in the past few weeks about 7-8 times, twice on Vista, but this one is on XP.

I am just curious if anyone has seen this more often latety? We currently have 2 XP machines doing it, which we've tried all new hardware, ghosting to a new hard drive, and even in safe mode, its a black screen with a white cursor. We have tried scanning the drive externally with Panda, Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, amoung a couple others.

Just wondering if anyone knows of a new virus that may be causing it, or any other ideas, the weirdest part is while doing a repair install, it will go through the formatting fine, but when it gets to the actually GUI it still does the black screen with white cursor.

I remember an old problem where replacing the userinit file would fix a similar symptom, any other files we could manually try to replace for the logon? Thanks!

I tried fixboot and fixmbr, i tried to restore to an earlier date through the repair console. I tried every suggestion ive come across (mostly from this site) and even tried to load ubuntu to find my stuff (which didnt show up). All my things couldnt havebeen deleted that fast right? Hi guys i've been desperate to find an answer to my problem which has been pecking my head for the last couple of days. OK so i've been saving up for a decent processor, and i decided to get an AMD E5600 dual core processor.

First time i booted the computer up after changing the processor, i got lots of error messages, second time, the black screen and white cursor. It took me 1 day and a half of reinstalling window to finally get to window as it wouldn't boot to window at all even when im pressing f8.

Then i got it working, kind of... about 3/5 times i start my computer i would get a black screen with white cursor on the top left corner and the only thing i could do is to power off or to press reset about 5 times. When i DO get booted to window my pc usually crashes when i'm playing games. The game would turn to a black screen and the sound would be looping, then it would whether reboot to the white cursor or not at all.The weird thing is once i get to window my computer rarely crash if i'm not playin games(it crashed once while i was copying files off the network and that was it) I've checked all my temperatures, bios and drivers are up to date. My spec:

abit AN52 mother board
western digital 250gb hdd
radeon 1950x pro
amd e5600 dual core processor
2gb ram forgot the brand

Please please help me i need to put an end to this nightmare right now i can't live with this anymore lol

A:Black screen with white cursor after processor change

Change CPU type, you need to Repair Windows first
Not repairing Windows (ie you tried booting first) can corrupt files

Backup (if possible)
And install Windows clean (ie remove partition (on Windows install)
By the way, some computers have a recovery partition, don't remove that

What happened: I had a lot of viruses on my laptop so I thought I should re-install Vista. During the process, I deleted and formatted my laptop's HDD and now it's empty but after Vista completes all the install it brings me to this black screen and a movable white cursor.

I tried re-installing 3 times now and same black screen appears with the white mouse cursor. I tried looking on forums for the solution, and even tried hitting the CTRL+ALT+DELETE or CTRL+ALT+ESC but no task manager...

Any one can help me out here? I'm really stuck...

Other details after black screen:

I hold power button and powered off. Went to safe mode and it doesn't load just freezes there for few hours.
I tried repairing from last night 11pm and went to sleep wake up 10am and still on repair menu (frozen I guess).

My laptop details:

I have a 4GB ram, 64bit vista disc, 3ghz or 2.7ghz processor, 300gb HDD and brand is Dell. My laptop isn't connected to internet -- well it can wirelessly but I'd need to perform the set ups but I can't as I can't see my desktop...

Thanks in advance.

I have a Dell Latitude D810 that has worked great for me.

But last week I started having problems when Friday night it would not boot except to a Black Screen with a White Cursor - right out of POST.
It appeared the HD was dead, because it has been a little flakey anyway - so I bought a new one.

When I had the newone installed and re-imaged it seemed ok until the next morning. Overnight I had left it in standby mode - nothing new here.

When I got up in the morning and turned it on the Video was not re-sizing to match the laptop screen like it normally does.
So I tried to manually adjust it - then it froze and the screen went White -

I couldn't get out of that and the HD was running.
Finally I was able to put it back into a Standby mode - it seemed fine still.

Then I re-booted. The OS didn't come back and system failed to book comming out of the POST.

I then pulled out my UBCD to find that both drives were working.

I did the following:
1) Chkdsk / r
2) fixmbr
3) fixboot
4) boot/config
5) spybot
6) still working on it.

Any clues would be great! I need to get this thing back on line so I can get back to work.

Hi,

Okay, so you said you replaced the HDD, and then took the OS Image and put it on the new HDD? As you said, you had no problems there. It sounds like you may have a virus, or you MIGHT need to re-install your OS. I would suggest putting this in the Am I Infected? Forum, as you MIGHT have a virus. And if you find that you don't, please don't hesitate to PM me. I will respond as soon as possible.

And this afternoon I was using my laptop and all was fine until there was a short circuit, all the appliances in the house was shut down.

3 hours later when I turned on my laptop the screen started acting up. One particular problem is my cursor, it had black and white stripes, and I never heard this happened before. Next is my screen which freezes very frequently and then it goes black and goes back to normal. This is getting annoying and I have no idea what is wrong. I did a system restore to yesterday's date and to no avail, nothing was changed. Freezing screen, blinking screen and black and white cursor.

Man, this is the second time I've come across this issue. Both times they were top of the line Dell Studio and XPS laptops. In the end, I resolved the issue by installing Windows 7, but for my own sanity, I need to know why Vista won't install. I tried installing 3 times and it keeps bringing me to this damn white cursor! I tried my trusty Dell OEM disk and even burned a fresh copy of Home Premium at 2x speed but to no avail. The logic just doesn't add up. The laptop boots fine from a BartPE disk and as I said, with Windows 7. I personally would never install Vista on any of my machines, but when it's for a customer they're either going to have to spring for a license in 30 days or not *cough* update *cough* (if you know what I mean). I'm one of those people who has to know and THIS is what drives me nuts.

My experience helping a neighbor with this problem was that some piece of hardware was not connected properly and the device driver had to time out (over 4 minutes) and then Windows launched properly and he could sign in. We then checked the device manager and saw a problem. Unistalling the problem hardware, plus checking for startup software (using msconfig), and then checking starup services (computer management), and then the startup program in the use profile and the all users profile and deleting stuff that obviously was going to the Internet for updates (e.g. Acrobat) solved the issue.

How long have you waited to actually get a signin screen?

My computer didn't seem to have shut down completely. Although my memory is fuzzy about exactly what happened, I seem to recall that I came back to it, noted that it hadn't shut down completely as exptected (I had intended on shutting it down using windows|shut down in Windows 7), and (this is where I don't remember) either directed it to shut down, or to start.

I've seen some similar forums elsewhere. Some suggest a virus, and others a corrupted file. Also I ran a test many months ago that reported a graphics bios error, so I upgraded the NVDIA bios at that time.

Here is what is going on:

While the computer hangs, I see a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the upper left.

Typing anything doesn't seem to have any effect (including ctl-alt-del, alt-tab, the windows key, and all function keys).
The one thing that does have an effect is tapping the computer's power button once. After about 20 seconds, it shuts down with nothing more appearing on the screen as it shuts down.

When I hit the power button again, I see the f2 setup / f12 boot menu options, then "resuming windows", then the black screen with the blinking cursor.

Hitting F2 on "booting"/"resuming" takes me to the CMOS Setup Utility screen. I tried changing the boot configuration to prioritize the DVD, where I put a Windows recovery CD, but the CD is never spun up before or after this step. Exiting this screen takes me back to "resuming windows" and then the blinking w... Read more

Hi, just finished a clean install of Windows 7 - everything was working perfectly and after about an hour I restarted my laptop just to make sure all was well. It wasn't. On starting my laptop now I get the usual 'Sony Vaio' screen and then just a black screen with a blinking white cursor like a command prompt.

You can't type anything into this screen and it just stays like that, Windows 7 does not load.

I installed Windows 7 through a USB stick since my CD drive isn't working. I've tried restarting the laptop both with and without the USB but no change. When using the USB I get the Windows 7 install screen again and I can choose 'repair' but it's not finding any problems.

I've also tried resetting my boots order to default (as it started with the USB drive when i was installing) but this hasn't helped either.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
