Preferred Solution: computer wont sutdown/ computer crashes

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Ok so I've had my computer for almost 2 years now and ever since July I've been having constant BSOD's and other crashes. I finally decided to reformat my computer last week and everything has been working fine for the past week. Then last night while watching a movie on it my computer it crashed. Not a BSOD, but a crash where the image on the monitor just froze. I turned off the computer and just decided to deal with it today.

Now today, I could not get my computer to actually start at all. I would turn it on, and it would do its startup noise, like it was revving up or something, but then just do that over and over until I shut off the computer. No image would appear on the monitor. I opened the case and saw that my graphics card would keep lighting up while doing it. I removed my graphics card and plugged my monitor into my mobo, but my computer still wouldn't start. However, on the 3rd try I was able to get on my computer. Windows did startup repair but couldn't fix whatever problems (if any) that I had.

Basically, I'm wondering what is wrong with my computer (vague I know). When I was having all these BSODs I thought I just had software problems, but have I really had faulty hardware for a while? And is it my graphics card? I cannot help but feel like my whole system is faulty for some reason. I didn't have any problems up until last July but the past month and a half has been brutal for my computer.

Edit: Just got another crash (none blue screen) with my monitor hoo... Read more

So the problem started about a week ago. I came home from work and tried to wake up my computer. It "woke up", but only to a black screen with cursor flashing in the middle. It was clearly on the User login screen as the ease of use button in the lower left corner kept flashing periodically as well. I tried tying in my password and nothing worked.
So I began looking online and I tried some suggestions: Bringing the System Recovery and entering safe mode(same thing happened)....tried entering safe mode + cmd prompt (same problems).
I then used the System Recovery, cmd prompt, and robocopy to transfer all the files I needed to an external...so those are all safe and sound.
I tried doing a system restore point, but that didn't work either. So fed up, I decided to do a clean instal. I inserted the disc, deleted the partitions and everything on the hard drive, and just did a fresh instal of Windows 8.

I FINALLY got to my desktop. So to get back to 8.1 I had to do all the appropriate updates...which is where I ran into problem #2 that plagues me till now. After the updates were installed it, of course, asks me to restart...when I do.. I get the windows logo with the swirling dots and then BSOD. The error on it is "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (nvlddmkm.sys)". I read that thats because of video card drivers....so I go back to a system restore point I set up, and try updating without the gpu drivers.
I get the BSOD again and same error, though this time withou... Read more

A:Computer crashes/wont work with updates

Hello, you could redo the 8.1 install, but this time before installing any updates, go directly to NVidia and download and install the drivers for your EVGA card, reboot and then search for updates, then go into the optional list and deselect anything related to video. Given how fast 8.1 installs it is a valid option. But it is up to you.

Hey everyone, I work at a small company, and sometimes try to figure out what is wrong with some of their computers just to help out. This particular one is having problems exacerbated by our newly installed ESET antivirus. A perfect match of this computer in hardware has been put together and works just fine, same OS. Though ESET needs to stay, I was wondering if any really fantastic person(s) would like to help figure out why this one is playing hard to get.

Thanks for the time!

Just an FYI Dusty, there are no dumps in your upload.

I'm sure you already know how but you may want to make sure it's configured for small memory dumps,

A:[SOLVED] Can't open My Computer/Documents/Control Panel -computer crashes

Hi Anamarija and welcome to TSF !

Does the problem also happen in safe mode ?

Unplug all your USB devices. Use a PS/2 mouse and keyboard for the time of the troubleshooting.

Go to start => run and type chkdsk c: /R. You'll be prompted to restart the computer. Tell us if it finds any errors on the hard drive. If you couldn't see the scan's results you'll find them in the event viewer under application in the latest winlogon entry (click on the title of the source column to sort them alphabetically).

Did the BSOD or the errors in the eventviewer mention any .exe, .dll or .sys file ?

We'll need the .dmp files that you'll find in c:\windows\minidump, problem is you may not be able to browse your drive to zip and attach them with your computer. Copy them to some floppy or usb drive using the command prompt : start => run => cmd. Type copy c:\windows\minidump\*.dmp x: x being the volume letter that corresponds to your usb or floppy drive. Then with another computer zip them and attach the .zip file to your next post using the manage attachments button.

Double click the errors in the event viewer, click on the third button on the right (this copies the information in the memory) and right-click => paste the complete error message here.

Go to start => run and type devmgmt.msc. See if there are any devices with a red cross, yellow exclamation point or whatever in front of their name. If you find anything related to your webcam then right-click =>... Read more

This afternoon, my computer began crashing whenever I try to open one of the more important files, like my computer or the control panel. Everything works correctly on safe mode, and I've tried driver verification, but there's upwards of 200 unregistered drivers, so I'm not entirely sure what to do. Are there any drivers I should look for to move away from the system32 folder? Or is there any other way to solve this?

Also, I haven't installed any new software recently.

I have been having a long running problem with my computer. It started out as a lack of internet access which turned out tI o be a bad virus. I fixed that problem by doing a complete reformat of my system. I thought that that would fix the problem and it did for a bit.

After a week or so I started having BSOD. I went to a computer shop and we went to work on the issue. The BSOD's were showing that there was an error with my sata connection. I replaced the cables. The problem kept happening, so I replaced the motherboard and hard drive with a complete reformat again. Then I continued to have the same issues which included crashes, disappearing icons, weird error messages (x86 errors) and once in a while a BSOD. The BSOD's all say there's still an error with the sata connection.

I then decided to replace the power supply and upgraded to an evga 1300 watt. I replaced my case as well to a bigger one. I even replaced the ram sticks That seemed to fix the problems for a while and the BSOD's became very rare, but after a lot of use the weird error messages became very common. I really can't use the computer any more. I'm typing this on my laptop.

The computer shop I go to say's this is probably a hardware issue. They can't seem to figure it out. I've had it in multiple times. This is a nightmare for a computer owner. I have replaced virtually all the parts and my computer is still utterly unusable. The only program I installed since the last reformat wa... Read more

Why don't you just buy a new one! WOW.. Sorry..
Well, you SHOULDN'T have played with drivers...That is what's up.
Tried re-formatting AFTER doing those changes?
That computer shop owner though...I don't know what to say.
1) try reformatting to a version that is supported by the bios..(Check if it supports x64)...(fully ready)
2) post every error you get and attempt to find solution to each one. (Getting tired)
3) Can you mention WHEN did certain errors happen? before...after changing Processor and Graphic Card? (Getting worried)
4) Try lots of thing on the web. (hope time)
5) Revert back to the old virtual stuff. (shameful return)
6) take off the good pieces and attempt to use it on another computer or sell it. (Hopeless)

So I have recently bought a Samsung 850 Evo 120 GB ssd drive. My HP computer now has a 1TB hitachi hard drive and a ssd drive. The computer loads from the SSD drive. To try and maintain space, I have tried to download MS Office on the HDD. But when I install office, while in the middle of installing, my computer always crashes. This has happened on all three of my attempts to install office so far. Is there any reason why I should not be able to install office on the HDD or do I have to install it on the SSD?

Thanks in advance for the help!

It's always best to have your programs loaded onto the Windows drive, which in your case is the Samsung SSD.

It would be best if you could supply a screen shot of Disc Management making sure it covers all discs & the information. This will show if you have any other problems.

No matter what i tried the software would tell my system not to open it. I tried restarting the computer but when it gets onto the windows loading screen it flashes a blue screen then resets and this continually happens. I tried safe mode and last safe config, it still happens.

Some of the malware i saw:

Anti Malware doctor
Security suite
and some more.

I cannot use my DVD drive as it doesnt work so my only option is to do some via USB stick.. Is there any other way? please help.

How can i fix this without having to use a DVD drive and formatting / recovery console?

Need this help urgently.

About a month a go I installed kapersky anti-virus software as my norton trial had run out. 30 days have now gone and i found that i never had no antivirus software so i decided to download some free stuff online (avast) and (mcafee). To my horror i have noticed that although i can download this programmes, I am still unable to run them. I feel that an virus is preventing me to have antivirus software on my laptop and its really frustrating me!

I also was told by someone to download MalwareBytes (which i did). I run a full scan and was informed that i had 500 and something files that were infected (registry). When it came to me deleting these through the programme it was fine but there was 11 infected files that the programme was unable to delete and i think these are the files that are responisible for me not being able to download antivirus software on my laptop.

Additional info is:
When I browse on the internet and decide to click on a link from google, I sometimes get the message 'document moving' and it directs me to a suspiscious website.

My operating system is also windows vista.

Any help on how to get rid of these 11 infected files would be much appreciated!

Thanks x

Well, today when I woke up I tried starting my computer, but it started making beeping noises and the light on the expansion bay started flashing. I looked up the problem, and found it it's beep code. The beeps my computer is making is as follows:
short, short, long
short, short, long
short, short, long
short, short, long
short, short, long

There is a one second interval in between each set. I went to the HP site and found this page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=bph07107#N1010 . However, I'm not sure if it applies to my BIOS or not. I have a HP Pavilion Media Center m8120n TV PC, 3GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7350 LE Graphics Card, and about 500GB of HDD space, and an Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600.

I tried looking for the specific BIOS on my computer, but couldn't find it. So I can only assume what they say is my problem is what it actually is. Which is that my computer was "Unable to initialize video or video card required but not installed". This computer is about 4 years old, and I have never changed the card, and have not updated the drivers for several months. How can I fix this problem? I read on other forums where people where having problems with their RAM they had to try putting it into a different slot, however, I'm not sure if my computer has multiple PCI-E slots to do this. Furthermore, If I do have to do something similar, I have no means of grounding myself. Would it be okay if ... Read more

A:Computer makes beeping noises on start, computer wont run

Do you have any display at all?

If not, then it's probably certain that the beep code is correct; that your video chip needs butter (because it's toast).

Does it have a video card installed? If so, pull it, and see if you can get display through the native video output. If it is without a video card, go to a local shop, and see if they have on old one, compatible with your system, that you can use to test with. If it tests good, you probably need to buy a video card...

If your computer is disconnected, you can probably get away without any grounding strap. Nothing in life is guaranteed tho'.

I was using my microsoft office word program, and it all of a sudden went funky, like short circuiting out, then a blue screen popped up saying that the program I was using was bad and causing my computer to crash, so my computer was shutting down before it crashed. Then it shut down and came back up asking if I wanted to go back to a restored or previous thing, something like that, (a restore point), and it said it would probably turn off and on several times through out and could take several minutes, then the computer turned off and back on and the screen would not turn on... I have a dell all in one computer, so I do not have a separate tower from my monitor. What happened? How can I fix this? Any one out there have any ideas? I was not even on the internet at the time.

A:Got a bad program, shutting down computer before computer crashes... help

When you first turn it on, can you see the Dell logo? If so, does it show the Windows logo after that?
Do you recall details of what the blue screen said?
If you can see the Dell logo, then try these free, bootable diagnostics: http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html
You can press F12 to get to the boot menu in order to boot from the CD/DVD drive.

Have a dell xps 12, a few days ago, I was having some serious wireless communication issues and after several reboots, it stopped, but from that point forward when it tried to sleep it crashed.

I had previously installed then turned off netgears parental controls (and have since removed).

Get several errors in log:

My computer started crashing when I would try to run Norton AV . Then it started crashing when viewing pictures and videos. Took to repair shop and they could only find some spyware. I told that that everything was backed up so to just refomat. They also tested my ram and said it was fine in the testing but suggested changing it if the problem continued. It started crashing agian soon after getting it home. I replaced my ram and it still crashes. However yesterday I did get a successful virus scan.. everything looked fine with that. It is and Asus bourd, AMD 2200, Win XP with all the current windows updates. Any help would be appreciated.

I had this problem a year ago and it seemed that replaceing a ram stick fixed it. When researching that someone suggested it could be the cache on the mother board. Could that be possible?

A:Computer crashes. Have reformatted and changed ram, still crashes

hey dude i got a thing u can do first of all start the computer in safe mode then run your antivirus program and scan
next if there are any viruses that have been found you can then remove them
once done reboot and try scaning again but in normal mode to see if the problem has been fixed

Hello there,
It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.
Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:
1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.
4. Accept the Windows license agreement.
5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.
6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.
7. Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk... Read more

When I start up my pc, I get a screen that says, "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully, a recent hardware or software change may have caused this, ….etc."
Then I am offered with a bunch of options to either:

1) Start in Safe Mode
2) Safe Mode with Networking
3) Safe Mode with Command Prompt
4) Start Windows Normally
5) Last Known Good Configuration

None of them work, the safe mode ones, show a bunch of lines of code as per normal when starting up safe mode, then it freezes and stops and eventually goes back to the screen mentioned above. what should i do?

A:guys my computer wont start and wont have a display

does it beep any. if not this will indicate more major problems. (unless you dont have beep speaker installed) a mother board is programed with a set of beep to play if there is a problem like such as three beeps if the ram is not working, 1 long beep if the vid card is not working etc etc. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOUR BEEPs WILL BE. if you are not getting these then you need to find out why. see if you have a speaker inside your case. if you do and all of your fans spin but still no action from you pc then you may have a larger problem such as mother board or processor.

A:Sutdown causes XP Pro to restart

hide files or folders....

To hide a file or folder
Open My Documents.
If the file or folder you want to hide is not located in My Documents or its subfolders, use Search to find it. To open Search, click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.

Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, select the Hidden check box.

To open My Documents, double-click the My Documents icon on your desktop.

When shuting down, program windows appear and when progess bar ends msg "program not responding" appears and i click end progeam button, more windows pop up and i do the same thing again until it shuts down. How can I get it to turn off without going through these "not responding programs?

A:Solved: Sutdown problem

Click on 'Start'

Click on 'Run'

In 'Run' type regedit then click OK.

In regedit navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

In the right pane look for 'AutoEndTasks'

Set the 'Data' value to 1

If the 'Data' value is set to 0 double click on AutoEndTasks and in the box that opens type 1 then click OK.

You may have to reboot for the changes to take effect.

If you don't feel comfortable working in the registry, open notepad and either type or preferably copy and paste the following: (type exactly as it is here)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]

Click on 'File' in notepad and select 'Save'.

Where you see 'File name' type shutdown.reg (be sure to use the .reg extension).

Save the .reg file to the desktop where you can find it easily.

Right click on the shutdown.reg file and select 'Merge'.

When asked if you want to add this to the registry - confirm.

Again, you may have to reboot for the changes to take effect.

I have included an attachment of the registry editor should you wish to navigate to the 'Desktop' key.

Hello all. I am praying you can help me resolve this problem I have been dragging around until today when I have finally decided to do something about it!

The problem is my laptop keeps on shutting down when I play (supposedly) CPU intensive games (Champ Mang 4, STW, Soldier of Fortune, Heroes of Might and Magic III).

I believe this is due to my CPU overheating, indeed I have noticed that the case nearest the CPU area is warm. I believe the fan could be the problem since it no longer blows out air like before, but I am not so sure about how to go about sorting the fan or even replacing it (I opened up the laptop once before and needless to say there wasn't much room to work in). Basically, Im worried about breaking the thing.

Also, I recently ran a CPU test and it deduced that my the FBU and the CPU are both overclocked and should put back to the normal settings (note: i didnt change anything cos i lack the know-how), and that my CPU is 4 C above the maximum allowable CPU temperature. I figure that the extra heating could also be attributed to this overclocking too, but I have no idea about how to change these settings and yet again, I don't want to screw up an already screwed up system.

My basic system is: 998Mhz Intel Celeron, 128MB, 10GB Ram, with SiS video and sound drivers.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated!

A:CPU overheating and auto system sutdown

I have recently checked the CPU temperatures:

with no major applications running CPU Temp = 43-46C
with the browser running CPU Temp = 47-51C
with one of the aforementioned games running, CPU Temp = 59-63C!!

Which I assume is why the laptop shutsdown. Can anyone offer any assistance here or will I be better off moving this to the cooling forum?

I want to transfer photos from my camera to my laptop. Normally, I go into the Computer icon, select the drive where I insert the SD card and I am able to transfer photos directly.I automatically assumed I had a virus. Computer won't start troubleshooting suggestions

Try each one in this general order until problem is fixed:
1) check all your connections including your memory, power connectors, cards, fans and ensure the 4-pin connector for your CPU is installed if your system requires it. If you have removed your memory, make sure it is the correct slot(s). Not all slots work. I don't know if this will prevent the computer from trying to boot. At any rate, every motherboard manual details exactly how RAM should be installed for that particular board. If problem persists:
2) test the power connection with a lamp
3) make sure your on/off switch (if you have one) on your power supply is ON
4) remove the cables from ALL drives and restart
5) also remove unnecessary cards and non-cpu fans
6) Borrow a power supply (sufficient power and appropriate 20 or 24-pin connection)

I've seen this happen when a connector is improperly placed. The motherboard and/or power supply can detect an inappropriate power surge and not even start.
Some people have accidentally joined power connectors to each other, usually when hooking up system fans.

Your system can turn on and start booting to the BIOS with only the motherboard, a power supply and I assume some RAM (though I'm not positive the RAM is requied). It does not even need the monitor, although you obviously won't see what is happening but you will hear the power supply start. In general, with such a fault if the... Read more

My computer crashes when I play pretty much any game.
The thing is, it didn't crash in the past and I have the SAME hardware as I did then.

It crashed when playing Mass Effect 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Modern Warfare 2.
However it DIDN'T crash when playing Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Modern Warfare 2 has always run practically seamlessly in the past, and it runs far better than Black Ops but still crashes.

The crashes occur when playing for between 5 minutes and 15 minutes. The sound starts to repeat and my monitor loses connection, then my computer restarts.

I've updated my drivers.

I've read of similar issues with other people that also have a 9400 GT, but they seem to have always had this problem, my problem is a recent one. I've had this card for over a year.

I cannot blame windows7 for it's crashes, because it will often crash during initialization and even before BIOS POST mensage appears... however i cannot find out what is the crash reason... i mean, a blue screen appears, for 0.3151 seconds and then the computer restarts, i cannot see to find the crash details anywhere, so i don't know what to do. I heavly suspect from either memory or video board (as it failed to start 13 times already (according to Action Center) ).

I mean, every day i have to start it about 5 times before it actualy gets to the Desktop...

How do i look at the blue screen error mensage on Windows 7?

and if the problem is Memory/Video Card what do you guys sugest me doing?

A:The Computer Itself crashes

You may follow this link on how to post for crashes.

What you can do for now is to check that the jumpers on the hard drives (if IDE) are set correctly.

Also, check on your memory Vdimm and timings in the bios. Make sure they are set correctly for you specific RAM modules. Visit the maker's site of the modules to find out the information on them. Use the spd tab of CPU-Z if you need to figure out which modules they are.

Make sure the pc is not overclocked at all.

I have following problem
computer restarts from time to time. sometimes that happens when I'm listening to music, before it crashes sound becomes distorted like martians are trying to speak with me, sometimes that happens during file copying from usb or dvd or hdd-hdd
same problem occurs on linux ubuntu
I have installed VIA chipset drivers (in system properties VIA BUS master controller (dual mode)) . HDD is set UDMA6 and DVD to UDMA2 as stated in IDE Tool.
I checked the hdd for integrity and memory also. tests went fine.
I tried also with BurnInTest tool it went ok.
I left Prime95 all night working and yet no restart, cpu temp wasnt over 60 C
so if you have any idea, what could be the problem or how could I test it better i would appreciate it.

lets post in the correct forum next time - (audio/video)

have you checked your sound card drivers?
Have you checked your PSU with a tester/ multimeter?

I've encountered some difficult problems to deal with when it comes to my computer. It was built for exactly three years ago and I've never had any problems until now.

The 6th October while I was playing Battlefield 3 Beta the computer crashed and I had to restart it. During the boot a warning sign told me that the CPU was overheated and that's why the computer crashed. So after replacing the original Intel CPU-fan I assumed the problem would've been solved. However, after playing BF3B for 10 minutes the computer crashes again. I've checked all the temps and it shows just fine for the CPU and graphic card. I've played games like Crysis 2 with high settings without any problems, and the same problem occurs when I play low requirement games like Battlefield Play4Free.

After looking on google, the only cause for this problem I can find is overheated CPU, which mine isn't.
The graphic card's driver is updated, I'm not sure about the motherboard, as I'm not sure what I should look for. My computer specs:

The errorcode I get from Microsoft is: BCCode: 124 BCP1: 0000000000000000 BCP2: FFFFFA8008361548 BCP3: 0000000000000000 BCP4: 00000000000.

Hey tsf
over the last couple of months with my old computer i was experiencing lots of crashes and restarts that happened 99% of the time whenever i was playing a game and as soon as the loading bar would finish it would crash. started happening wen i switched to windows 7 then continued even though i wiped it and put xp on it. I figured something must have been wrong with the hardware in my computer and it was a couple of years old and pretty outdated so i didnt think much of upgrading to a new computer...

except now im experiencing the same problems only more frequently and they happen when im only watching a video on the internet or doing other way less taxing things than gaming, any ideas where i should start?

Okay first off system specs.

2 Seagate HDD, 1x 160Gb 1x 80Gb (SATA)
1 x Western Digital 160 Gb (SATA)
CDRom- (Sata)
Graphics - Gigabyte Nvidia 8600 GT (PCI-E)
CPU - 6200 Dual Core Socket AM2
RAM - 4x 1Gb DDR2
Motherboard - ASUS M2NPV-VM
Windows XP Professional 64x Service Pack 2.

The Problem.

Computer Boots fine, runs for approximatly 10-20mins the shuts off. No warning just turns itself off. Doesn't go through the shut-down steps. Did it while i was browsing the net, and in the middle of playing World of Warcraft. It did it even in the bios at one stage. Tried removing graphics card, to no avail. Even changed power supply. No go. Even tested the ram, ram was fine. Hoping my husband and I dont have to replace the CPU and the Motherboard. anything else we can try?

Please help if you can. thanx

A:My Computer Crashes.

Sounds like heat may be the cause. Check your processor heatsink mount and maybe clean and reapply thermal paste. Depending on what type of heatsink is being used there are guides available online for doing this. CPU would be the last thing i would suspect. Motherboard more likely.

Hoping someone here can help me out. Recently the computer has been running very slow and randomly shutting off - all on its own. I don't recall visting any questionable sites lately or downloading anything... spybot comes out clean, as does adaware - but i can't run my anti-virus without the computer shutting off. I was running CA software; and thought the problem might be there, so I unistalled it and downloaded a trial of microtrends pc-cillian. The same thing happens; namely I can't make it through a system scan without the computer shutting down.

here's my system info:

laptop - averatec 6100
Windows XP, Home Edition, 2002, SP2

Not sure what else is needed or where to start???

Thanks in advance
