Win8 Upgrade now American M screen & bad HDD

Q: Win8 Upgrade now American M screen & bad HDD

Hello, I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 and ever since then I get a screen at reboot or start up that's a American Megatrends screen and its saying my HDD is bad and I need to backup and replace. I go into my HDD C: and do a "Check drive for for system errors" and it say its fine. Now, let me start from the beginning.....

When I first upgraded it installed fine ect and after the install of updates it rebooted and this is when i get the first glims of the American Megatrends screen. My PC was running so slow and freezing ect and finally I got the blue screen and that's all it would do every time I tried to restart it and I didn't get a chance to backup anything what so ever. I called MS and they wanted me to DL the copy again onto the PC I was using and burn the ISO image to a DVD and boot from it. I did what they said but here is the kicker...

The PC I was on was a 64-bit PC and I thought the other PC was a 32-bit and with the new Windows 8 it auto decides for you . so what i did was downloaded the copy for the 64-bit on that PC (Just for kicks) and I had a desktop PC at the house as well and I know its a 32-bit so I DL a copy using that machine for the copy I was going to use to re install or try to fix the PC with. Long story short..

It allowed me to boot from DVD and I re installed the Win8 32-bit copy and it installed but I still get the American Megatrends screen saying I got a bad HD hit F1 to go on.

Now for some reason my PC is running WAY better so I went into the control panel system and it says:

System Type: 32-bit Operating system, x64-based processor

My question is why am i getting the American Megatrends screen and did the Windows 8 screw up my HDD? Also, do you think I need a new HDD..

Thanks!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Guru Members

I work for a small charity organisation for the elderly, (not trying to pluck heart strings), and the situation is that we were granted 7 new computers, these computers have Windows 8.1, and because we have an existing domain network we actually need to have Windows 8.1 Professional installed.

So prior to knowing that Windows 8.1 could not connect to our network, I had already started getting all the Windows updates, and cleaning the PC's of all the Lenovo add-on's software.

Once I realised that it was not Windows 8.1 Pro on the PC's but only Windows 8.1, being a charity we were able to purchase from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Centre 7 Windows 8.1 Professional licences.

I tried to use the VLC licence through the 'Windows Add-on's feature in Windows 8.1 , but a Volume Licence key is not accepted, and i have also been told that I must download the Windows 8.1 Professional .ISO from the Volume Licensing Centre, and install this particular download version.

But my question is, when I do the installation from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 pro, will it give me the option to do an upgrade installation, I worried as I don't want to lose all the previous windows updates, and Lenovo hardware driver files.

Or, is there a way to get the Volume Licence Key into the existing Windows 8.1 to unlock the Pro features, or even a clever way to trick the Windows installation.

Any members help would be really helpful.

kind regards

I upgraded two computers from win8 retail to win 81. One totally failed and had to removed the hard drive and put it in my working computer, to roll it back to win 8.0. It would not boot at all not even to bios after that fiasco. The other computer went just fine. The MSI P7N motherboard with core2duo did not work after running and first reboot, it was left with a black screen. Had to remove hard drive put in other computer (newer with quad core, etc.. win8.1) and roll it back then put it back in the computer which had the fail. I still don't know what failed. I think that computers older than 5 years just don't have the proper hardware for Win8.1, but maybe wrong.

A:Is it possible to upgrade from Win8 32bit to Win8 x64bit

No, you cannot trick it and you cannot upgrade. You can format and start over.

Is there a particular reason you want to get 64bit apps? Is it to take advantage of more than 4GB of RAM?

Hoping for some help (Superfly?) with a similar issue, sorry if i'm threadjacking, can move it if needed. Thinkpad W540 purchased last summer, shipped with Windows 8 Pro but i do not have an email or car with the license key. I added on media center which required a separate key which I have. Earlier this year i kept getting the upgrade to 8.1 message and i finally gave in to end the annoyance. It went fine though i had to recreate various settings and such. About a month later, i started to get the activation notifications. I spoke with MSFT to said i was not on a Windows 8.1 Pro retail license (thanks to their pushed upgrade) instead of my OEM which i suppose makes sense. None of the license keys i had work for activation. Trying to make it go away by throwing money at it instead of time, i bought licenses of Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro and Windows 8.1 Pro Pack. None of them worked... So now I don't know what to do which has lead me to this thread. See below for a diagnostic tool report. Any ideas on what i can/should do? I'm hopeful to find a license key and/or hot fix to make this go away as i really do not want to have to do a clean install of Windows. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to EF.

Seems you have tried a few key installs that failed ( currently you have the correct key installed which is a full WMC key that should not rely on a base qualifing Pro licence)
Anyway, the licencing store got corrupted - although there are no specific corrupted files as such, it may be prudent to run command prompt - admin:

I just downloaded the Technet version of Win8 Pro. When trying to UPGRADE the RP version, I keep getting a message to "remove install media, boot windows normally, and then add the install media afterwards". Of course, nothing happens when I reboot, heh. It LOOKS like I will have to do a clean install on my SSD which I just cloned so no big deal. BUT, if someone manages to upgrade, please post the procedure!

Nope, looks like a clean install is needed but the personal files can be kept... I will let you know.

A:Cannot upgrade to Win8 Pro Retail from Win8 RP.

The way I had heard was you would be able to use an Upgrade Version of RTM if you had RP installed. It would still do a clean install but save your personal files. It was to satisfy the requirement to have a previous version installed for the Upgrade key to work.

the product key is embedded on BIOS and honestly is not worth upgrading to windows 8.1 and then windows 10, it's better if you upgrade directly to windows 10. if your system has Home version sand you want the Pro version, you can simply upgrade to widnows 10 and then change the product key on it, it will switch to Pro version automatically. or you can do a clean windows 10 install and once at desktop change the product key http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/7209-product-key-change-windows-10-a.html

Is it worth while upgrading to 8.1 and then 8.1Update?

If so, what is the simplest way to go about it?. Not necessarily the cheapest but the easiest.

Thank you very much.

To upgrade from 8.0 you have to do it through the Microsoft store. When you do the upgrade from the Store to 8.1, you automatically will get 8.1 update 1. I just did the upgrade about 10 days ago and discovered this when i did the upgrade.

Hello, experts!
For the past few weeks, I've been seeing the AMI screen everytime I turn on my computer. It wasn't like that before, so I have no clue why it's showing up now. I pressed f1 and f2 numerous times and went through every session, still I cannot find the problem of why it keeps appearing during startup.

Since I just received a new computer this April, I'm not very familiar with the new AMI then I was with Windows XP. Instead, I used screen-shot to show my AMI screen. I hope this will help!

Hi all,
I?m not exactly sure where this should go, so feel free to move it to the appropriate forum, thanks.
My wife has a Toshiba laptop that came with win8 installed and was working fine. I installed software supplied by Belkin to get her access to the printer that is connected to the USB port of the router. Was working fine also until she installed win8.1 upgrade offered by MS. Also not working was Windows live mail, but I fixed that by going to programs and clicked on fix. This does not work on the ?Belkin USB print and storage center? I have uninstalled and re-installed several times, but no luck.
When windows starts up it gives me an error pop up telling me: Belkin USB print and storage center,a system error occurred.
No error number or anything, just a system error with the yellow triangle. Also, a setup screen comes up and wants ne to input the network name and password, but it can never log on to the router.
My wife has internet access and can get her mail, but cannot print anything.
Any idea on how to fix this?

Thanks
Sven

I am having trouble reasoning this out, and would appreciate any help.

I have an old machine, I built 5 years ago...it currently has 2 HDD's, one of which runs legit XP...installed from a DVD delivered with a previous Dell machine. I have a new SSD, that will be used to install Windows 8...currently empty, but attached to the Mobo.

I have run Windows 8 update advisor, and it wants me to download an upgrade for $40...however, I have been told in the PC shop that I will be "safer" if I buy the $150 OEM version.

In my world $110 is a big difference...and if the upgrade will work, I would opt for that. I just can't seem to find confirmation anywhere that this will be possible. In my mind, I will run the upgrade assistant, pay the $40, create an ISO, disconnect all HDD's and run a clean install on the new SDD.

Is that still an upgrade? or will the upgrade version block me at the activation stage somehow?

I don't want to spend $40 to discover it doesn't work, and that I need to spend another $150...

Thanks for any advice!!

A:Old XP machine, new SSD for Win8...is this an upgrade or need OEM?

I actually just installed on a new computer I built that had Windows 7 installed but no key (30 day grace period) and it installed without a hitch. I reformatted my HD as well. I just hope I don't start getting black screened and have to go back and install a previous valid version of windows, then reinstall windows 8. I just don't get it, technically my install isn't valid according to MS. It says right on the upgrade page, "To install Windows 8 Pro, customers must be running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, or Windows 7." I was expecting it to ask me for a valid Key from a previous version of windows, but it never did... When I go into system in Win 8 it says my version of windows is authentic. I've heard other reports of this as well when people upgraded from releaes preview.

Hi, and first post here so be kind :-) I've had a look around and so far not been able to find a clear recommended route to achieve an upgrade from Win8.1 to 10 (Pro/64) I have an Envy 17-k254na on order, which is preloaded with 8.1. Don't want that. I also have a purchased USB with Win10 ISO and genuine new key, and want to understand the best way to complete my Win10 build. I've already found a pile of HP drivers to help complete the job. As I see it, options are possibly:-Start 8.1 then access the Setup. exe on USB and let it take over from there. I'm assuming it will put the Win8.1 in a .OLD folder I could tidy later once I've validated the Win10, knowing it's stable or -Boot from USB and go for a fresh install using Setup and the ISO. If this is the best way forward is getting the Envy to boot from USB straightforward (on my Lenovo I just hit the Thinkvantage button at boot, go into BIOS and change boot priority) ...or is there a set of steps I'd need to follow to enable USB boot? thanks in advance!:-)

I am just about finished updrading to Win8 on my machine. Yes updrading!

I started with a Win8 VUP version (don't ask me, it was a gift - thanks - you know who you are)

The plan was to create install media from the download, create a VHD and boot Win8 from there.

After creating burning the media to disc, I started the install. Hmmmm, not the "normal" setup I was used to, better cancel and check EightForums tutorial sections.

Aha! That's what I was expecting, but not seeing. Turns out that the Win8 VUP is an ESD-ISO and the tutorial explained the steps necessary - even better.... it explained how to merge 8.1 (I think).

I thought about following the instructions, but decided to backup my data, create a system image and just install Win8 - see what it does. Would it give me the chance to install on the VHD and dual boot?

Nope, it updraded Win7. I cleaned up the c:\ drive and optimized it (defrag), then I ran Windows Update until the offers were exhausted. Another round of optimizing and a few hours of playing with Win8.

I actually liked Win8 - go figure! There were so many discussions about the new GUI that made it sound terrible, I was curious. Turns out that all the hoopla about the start menu was overblown much the way news exaggerates a storm. "hurricane threatens thousands of people on isolated island" and when the storm passes without causality? "thousands of islanders narrowly escape disaster from killer hurricane"

A:Win8 upgrade experience

In the same boat,
But have not acted because of my confusion of the tutorial and multiple options,
Personally I don't see this win-8 ios downloading to the desktop as a zip from Microsoft,
The work around to use 7-zip to access the ios makes more sense to update 8 to 8.1 but alias I do not want to upgrade win-7 at all,
win-8/ 8.1 is only a toy to play with/ tweak in my own special way

Hello Nalydyenlo, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If this is an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 preinstalled, then the W8 product key is embedded in the UEFI firmware and will automatically be detected and entered whenever you install the same edition of Windows 8 on that PC.

A WMC key will not activate W8. A WMC key is only good to add WMC to W8.

On restarting I was given the 3 options:
1) Load Win8
2) Windows recovery
3) Load Win7

I tried door number 1 first but again resulted in the same blank screen with spinning dots.

I didn't want to try the other 2 options without first getting the opinion of someone with more knowledge than me.

Do I try to recover win7, wipe the disc and start from scratch and lose all my previous settings or what?

Have not heard of it being automatic. You have to click on the tile in metro store to get it, just do not click should work. Unless MS gets pushy :-) which I would doubt.

Would all computers using Win7 be upgradeable to Win8?? I'm thinking about buying a Toshiba all in one touch screen with win7 installed.I read a review that stated the model could not be upgraded because drivers were not compatable. The model is LX835-d3250. This is a recent model release with few reviews and find it hard to believe that's the case. If true I will not buy the model since I want win8 with touch screen.
I can find no info on this in any spec. or manuf.web site. Any knowledge of this??

Considering upgrading my main pc from Win7 to Win8 preview edition, but would like to know first if I can do an actual "upgrade" versus "clean install" of the preview version - without losing any of my settings from Win7 (or data).

Would also like to know if when the full Win8 version comes out, if I can just upgrade the preview version to that, again without losing any data/settings.

Or would it be best to wait until the full version comes out, and upgrade then?

I vol in a small office running Win xp pro. We did try updating a PC to win 7 32 bit with success but if MS stops upgrading Win 7 Jan '15, it would mean an other upgrade again. S0 - we decided to upgrade to Win 8.1. At this point we do not want to buy Win 8 because $$$. Not sure if 32 bit is available.

We want to know if specs on our PCs will allow the upgrade.

January 2015 is a long way off, and there will be Windows 9 by that time or soon after. You can be enjoying Windows 7 all that time.

I'm considering moving from Win7 to Win8. Usually in the past when I change Operating Systems, I just make a new partition, do a New Install and then manually migrate the data over from hard drive/partition to hard drive/partition. And reinstall all the software.

But I've had this Win7 for years now and it has a lot of stuff on it and reinstalling all of it could be a problem in terms of time, so I'm wondering if Upgrading from Win7 to Win8 (instead of doing a New Install of Win8) is a better option.

What can I expect? Are upgrade installs reliable? Should I run the Files & Settings Transfer Wizard? What should I know, and/or what should I do, before trying to Upgrade, if I do?

Is there a reason you're not going from Windows 7 to Windows 10 instead?

Upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7 should be a breeze.

hi guys,

have 2 computers with Win7 on in the house. So my question here:

Can I buy an upgrade and install this on another pc, or is this not allowed?

thanks

Jeff

A:buying Win8 pro at upgrade price

Not sure if I understand the question but here goes. You can't buy one upgrade copy and install/activate it on two PC's. The product code you get will only be good for one PC, you will have to buy a license/product code for each PC you want to install on.

Hello,

I just buyed a Z930 Portege from Toshiba with Win7 Pro installed and 2 DVD with WIN8 upgrade.

Perfect, till I tried to make the upgrade. I changed in BIOS to UEFI and secure BOOT, started the computer with first DVD inside the DVD reader and nothing happend.

Then I started to search on the forum and find out that two other guys succeded with the update according to the paper notice of Toshiba (changing the BIOS and secure boot).

What I can do because main does not work.

Please give me an advice.
It is 12Gmodel, Core i5 vPro

A:Win8 upgrade on Portege Z930

*Solved the issue.*

Just do the changes in BIOS.
Restart and wait till you got the message: restore to the factory setting.

Chose this option, put the DVD1 with W8 from Toshiba in the external ODD and follow the onscreen advices. Just one will be, with changing the DVD1 with the second one.

That is it. You have W8.

Apologize if this has been answered already, but I looked through the threads and didn't see it.

I recently purchased the $38 Win8 Pro Upgrade from Microcenter (supposed, marked down from $199). From what I've read here, if I use that to "upgrade" my current Win7 pro install, that invalidated Win7 pro -- something I don't want to do.

But, before I return this (unopened), I though of something that MIGHT work -- and want to get feedback on this.

I used to have Vista on this PC but replaced that with Win7. That was a clean install, not an upgrade. Supposedly, I should be able to upgrade from Vista to Win8.

So, my plan is as follows:
1) Remove the drive currently hold Win7 pro from the PC
2) Stick in another drive, use my MR backup of Vista to restore it to that drive
3) Boot the PC, now running Vista, and use that to download the Win8 ISO.
4) Create bootable Win8 USB stick from that ISO
5) Swap drives -- remove Vista drive, put Win7 drive back
6) Boot from ISO and do "clean install" of Win8.

Questions:
1) Will this work? Since Vista won't be "present" on the PC during the Win8 install, if it goes looking for that, it won't find it.
2) Will this invalidate the Win7 install? My guess is it should NOT because I upgraded from Vista, not Win7

If folks have reason to believe this won't work, then please tell me -- and I'll return this to Microcenter and wait for the Win8 OEM version to be available.

A:Proposed Win8 Upgrade approach

You can d/l an .iso from microcenter?

If you get it from MS shop, it is an esd directory - it does offer to create a somewhat odd .iso

I would be astonished if what you are proposing didn't work - but of course, haven't done exactly the same thing myself.
