Internet Explorer history function broken

Q: Internet Explorer history function broken

My IE history function stopped working quite a while ago when I was using
version 5.1. It has stayed broken through upgrades to IE 6.0 and to 6.0 SP1.
When I select the "history" icon I get a list starting with History and containing only the file "index.dat". The only other item in the history list is
"desktop.ini". I have scanned the registry and it is OK. Is there any way to fix this without reinstalling IE?

Preferred Solution: Internet Explorer history function broken

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try going to Control Panel - Add/Remove programs-
select IE 6 - click add/remove- select Repair IE.
You may have to reboot.
See if that helps.

When I try to use the file (tab) of Windows Explorer, to delete history/recent places list/frequent places list; the mouse & keypad won't delete the list of prior opened folders, to clear the list. I 've tried (Advanced Startup) options to re-default
& load the (firmware), but no-luck to get (Delete History) to function properly. Is there a solution other than (refresh) & (reset) the PC, for this problem with File Explorer?

The problem....

Typing anything into the search box on the start menu or in windows explorer/control panel has no effect, no results are found. It doesnt say no result are found it just displays nothing. This extends to everything, searching for files as well as things like 'cmd' and 'regedit'.

Example - If i search for 'notes', the name of a txt file on my desktop, it finds nothing. If I then click see more results I get the following message. "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"
I am the only user on my laptop and am of course the admin so this message makes no sense.
Solutions tried....

- Doing a full reindexing of everything from the indexing options.
- Turning the search feature off, restarting and turning it on again.
- Using the inbuilt troubleshooter to find problems (none found).
- Using the downloaded troubleshooter from microsoft (found two problems and corrected them, still not working though).

So now i'm out of ideas. Can anyone suggests any fixes?
Thanks for your time.

A:Start and explorer search function broken?

After searching all day I've found a solution to the problem in another forum.

Navigate to this folder,
c:\Users\Your name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\1033\
And delete the file StructuredQuerySchema.bin

Its that simple, my search started working straight away. With so many complicated fixes and solutions why didnt microsoft know about this.

A:Search function is broken in Windows Explorer -> Libraries -> Documen

Hello dda,

Double check to make sure that the Windows Search service is set to Started and Automatic. If disabled, you could still do a non-index search in normal Windows Explorer folders, but libraries require the index for search to work in them.

Hope this helps,

If anyone can figure this one out, they are a better man than I. The "Search" function in my History file in Explorer (5.0) will not seem to clear. When I click on the History icon on the tool bar, I get a split screen on my Explorer window showing the contents of the History folder. If I have cleared the contents of the file in internet options and cleared temp. internet files, the file is clear. But, when I hit the "Search" function in the split screen display and type in a letter and then hit search, there are a few links which still appear. Even if I right click and try to delete them, they will not go away. Thus, they still appear when I have auto complete on even though I cleared my history file. I even tried uninstalling Explorer and reinstalling it (they must get saved in the older default Explorer which will not go away). When I go to the history file by way of the c: drive, they do not appear since there is no search function in it. I'm baffled. If anyone has any ideas, I would be happy to hear them. I assume another way to solve this is to delete the back up explorer which came with Windows 95... but I don't know how to do this either since there is no uninstall option for the earlier version. If someone knows how to uninstall it, I would appreciate info on that too.

I'm starting to get sick of Microsoft products. I need your help.

I was going into yesterday's (Wednesday) History under IE and was cleaning up some stuff, as I needed to revisit some sites I was at on that day. In cleaning up, I was deleting the site folders containing websites I didn't need (right mounse click, delete). After doing this for a bit, things appeared to stop deleting.

I restarted IE, but all of Wednesday is now gone (it can't expand, all other days can expand). However when doing a history search for a site I know I visited on Wednesday, it comes up. I verify this by right clicking the site and choosing Properties (the last visit date shows as Wednesday). Thus it appears that sites visited on Wednesday are still in the History, however can't be listed under the View by Date.

I hope I explained this adequately. Does anyone know how I can get all the websites I visited yesterday back again in a list? I don't need the ones I actually deleted myself.

If you need more info, please let me know.

Hello, I'm using Internet Explorer 8, and I've noticed that when I delete browsing history, it doesn't delete the history of websites visited. They still pop up when I type in the address bar. I have 'history' ticked, so it should be deleted. Help please.

A:Internet Explorer History

Click on Start > Run > type regedit.

Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs

In the right pane, delete all the URLx (e.g. URL1, URL2 and so on) that you do not wish to be visible in the address bar drop down list.

Note: If you delete only certain keys, make sure that the remaining keys are renamed in sequential order starting from url1. Otherwise you might corrupt your remaining keys.

You might need to reboot for changes to take effect.

So should I ask questions about Explorer 11 on this forum or an Explorer 11 forum?

However the History tab always has nothing inside even if I browse.

Is there anyway of being able to track history after it's been deleted?

Or, being able to avoid it being deleted?

Or, being able to have the history saved to two seperate locations, so that when it does get deleted, IE only removes it from the original location, and keeps the other one, like a "backup" type process?

in the right pane you should see the urls you have typed...right click and select delete on the one you don't want...

be careful in the registry and make a backup before you start

if your asking about the list that appears to the left of the screen when you click the history button...you should be able to just right click on the one you don't want and delete it

My secretary liked to surf the internet on her lunch hour and everyday at the end of the day, she would launch internet explorer>tools> internet options> and delete the history. Our IT department made a change and now the delete button is grayed out. She really hasn't been going to obscene sites or anything, (more like the history channel site, etc...) but we do have a policy not to use work computers for personal use.
I told her not to worry but she's panicking and wants the history deleted. I would have just asked the IT department but she doesn't want to do that. Is there a way to delete the history either through dos or windows explorer???

I told her I'd post the question here and let her know what I find out. We do not have administrator privilages so I don't think we can change the permissions to allow the history to be deleted like she used to do. Any suggestions???
I know you IT people would prefer she go through the IT department but she'd rather not. I know how to use "regedit" to delete the key in the registry for the "content advisor" from when our IT guy left and didn't share his password. Is there someplace in the registry for the internet explorer history?

Dear Forum,

I am having trouble with internet explorer. I have downloaded from the email that I received to a folder that looked like it was created with capital letters - I have done a bit of research and I gather that it went to a IE5 folder. When I went looking for it - I could not find it.

I have tried everything to try and find it.

In future I know to save to a library or desktop - before I have to call Microsoft - I think that the technical advisor at the Microsoft website was that technically blessed. He only could give general advice - we all know that I guess you really have to see items - just words - well you miss the details.

I just want to know if I have the correct set up like everyone else.

Dear All

I need your help! For awhile now, every so often websites appear in my history on Internet Explorer which I have not accessed, (nor for that matter any1 else on my laptop). These websites are not exactly the decent type, and I have no idea how they appear.
They are not popups, but actual websites, some of them originating from a search in Google (which again I did not do!)
Now how is this possible?
Does anyone know whether it is possible that my computer can be accessed and the broadband internet connection used to access websites which then display in my history???? Is that what is going on, or could it be some type of adware/spyware?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

One week ago, Internet Explorer stopped saving my history. It lets me see what pages I've viewed from weeks ago, but it will not tell me what I looked at last week. During last week, it would also not let me see what I was viewing during that particular day. (Example: on Monday, it showed me as having no history on Monday, same for Tuesday, etc.)

I installed Internet Explorer 7 yesterday, hoping that it would solve the problem. It did, for about ten websites. Then it once again stopped saving my history! It has no pages saved for today's history.

How can I fix this? Using Windows XP, if that matters. Sorry if this post is confusing at all, I was kind of up late trying to get it fixed.

Does anyone know if there is a way to keep someone from deleting the internet files or history for I.E.? Or maybe there is a way to have I.E. create a backup of those files so that the person didn't know there was a backup?

A:Internet Explorer cache/history/cookies

Windows already 'backs up' some of the information that IE stores in things called 'index.dat' files; http://www.acesoft.net/delete_index.dat_files.htm

If you scroll down to the foot of the page I linked to, you can d/l a free viewer that should enable you to see what is currently in the index.dat files on your system.

Obviously, if the person that deletes the IE History is knowledgable enough, they will be aware of these files and may use one of the many free cleaning tools that will clear them.

There are also things called User Assist Files in your Registry that are supposed to store various bits of information unnecessarily, but that's a more complcated story that you can read about here, if you're interested (you have to click on Articles' and then 'Explorer Spy'); http://www.utdallas.edu/~jeremy.bryan.smith/
