Q: Replacement hard drive showing wrong capacity in File Explorer

I would be grateful if anyone can help me out. After my Windows 8 Asus n56vj 750gb hard drive failed I replaced it with a 1tb hdd. After carrying out a system image restoration using EaseUs To-do the new hard drive shows in File Explorer as a 750gb capacity. How can I get the increased HDD capacity to register.

Preferred Solution: Replacement hard drive showing wrong capacity in File Explorer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is normal after a cloning. The partition needs to be expanded. If you look in disk management is there a partition after your Windows C: partition? If there is then you will need to use a third party partition manager to first move the partition after C: and then expand C:.

Partition Wizard can do the job. All steps are virtual and will not complete until Apply is clicked. This lets you back out of any steps if a mistake is made.

If there is no partition after C: you can expand it in Disk Management by right clicking C: and selecting Extend Volume.

Can you post a screenshot of Disk Management?

Hello All You Lovely People Out THere

I have bought a hard drive to replace a faulty? (slow) The make of the one I'm replacing is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 200GB ata/133 HD (IDE connector, as I my mobo is an old one and doesn't have SATA!!!)

My new hard drive is a Western Digital WD2500 Caviar SE Enhanced IDE Hard Drive 250GB. I plugged it in and booted up and went into the BIOS settings and it only shows 136GB. I have formatted it and partitioned it and in disk management / Acronis Disk Director 10 it only shows 127.99GB!!! (it is used as a slave drive)

I have read a number of forums (solutions) but non seem to apply. I know that some 'old' mobos won't show more than 137gb but my mobo had no trouble showing up the 200gb hard drive I'm replacing, nor the 250gb primary drive. I have tried the drive in both primary and slave but the result is the same.

Does anyone have any suggestions?!

I haven't updated my bios settings.... ever!! and in case this may be the solution is there anyway of finding out what mobo I have as I didn't build my own pc, so I have no idea what mobo is in there (it's a winfast something or other)

Thanks in advance for any help given, if there's anything else you need to know, just ask.

Hello everyone,

I installed Windows XP Professional on my old HP m370n media center PC. I could not do a factory restore, the only way to get it working was to delete the HP recovery partition and install it there.

Now it works except that the hard drive's capacity which is 160 GB is not displaying correctly. When I go to disk management you can see that there is 130.17 GB recognized however it isn't a part of the main C: partition like it was before. I know there is a method in Windows 7 to extend a partition to include additional space however in Windows XP when I right clicked on the unallocated 130.17 GB I could use the windows new partition wizard and create a primary partition, extended partition, or logical drive. I chose extended partition thinking this would merge it with the C: drive but it did not. It only shows it as available highlighted in green but it is not merged with the 13.68 GB that only shows on drive C:

As you can see in the picture, when I right click the space I want to add to drive C: I can delete the partition or create a new logical drive. Any idea on how to remedy this issue?

Thank you

A:My Computer not showing actual hard drive capacity

I would delete the green/extended "free space" partition.

I would then use a 3d-party tool (I use Partition Master by EaseUS) to resize the C: partition.

The Win 7 tools are not provided in XP and do not function in the same manner.  The 3d-party partition/disk management tools work better for adjusting partition size than any of the Windows tools, IMO.

I've got a Dell xps17 702x with service tag <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed as per privacy policy>,  and keep getting warnings of running. Out of disk space. I'd hoped tthat 2x500GB would be enough but photos and music take a lot of space.

What is the biggest capacity of hard disks that I can put in my laptop? I'd also like to change the boot  disk for an SSD.  I've looked on the Dell site for my service tag,  and it only offers 640GB HDD or 500GB SSD,  which isn't enough. I cannot find anything that tells me whether there is a designed maximum capacity.  For example,  could I put a 2TB drive in?

A:What is max capacity of replacement hard disk for xps17 L702x

All current notebook drives that will physically fit the system will work - at 2T the only drive that will fit is the Seagate/Samsung Spinpoint M9T.  That's the only 9.5 mm 2T  out there.  All the other 2T drives (and most over 1T) are 12.5 mm or taller drives that won't physically fit into the system.

Hi everyone. My name is Jimmy. I'm using a lenovo 3000 n100 laptop running windows vista with SP1. Recently I noticed that my 100GB hard drive was running out of space. So I deleted nearly all my space-hogging applications and media. Windows explorer said there was still being around 70GB being used. Since I had only a few GB of documents/media and no huge programs, I suspected that this was wrong.

I proceeded to "clean up" my disk space: deleting temporary files with windows disk cleaner, running the chkdsk utility, doing a complete defrag. I deleted all but my last system restore point, deleted my hibernation files, and checked shadow copy (shadowcopy was only using about 1GB of space... not the culprit). I ran CCleaner and then full scans of Windows Defender, AVG, and Spybot S&D.

All of this freed up about 10GB, but explorer said there was still supposedly a whopping 60GB taken up on my 100GB hard disk. Highlighting and selecting the properties of all the files in C, even with hidden files & super hidden files enabled, said it was about 25GB. I also downloaded a program called JDiskReport which calculates disk usage and, affirming my suspicions, JDiskReport showed about 27GB of usage.

http://img243.imageshack.us/my.php?i...0389232mt5.jpg

So, why then the difference of 30GB between windows explorer and jdiskreport? Someone recommended that I boot from a disk or another OS and examine my C drive from there. So, I booted my laptop from WinPE on a... Read more

A:interesting junction problem - hard drive showing wrong amount of free disk space

H Jimmy. . .

Welcome to TSF Vista SUpport.

I know exactly what you are talking about with Vista Junctions. If an app uses hard-coded directory (folder) names from the XP era and is now running in Vista, the Junctions will take it for the ride of its life usually down to about 17 directories deep - depending on the length of the dir name.

I need to know if you are Vista x64 or x86 and was it an XP upgrade?

If you are Vista x64 and the program that you ran is an x86 app, the results are useless b/c of virtualization and 3 folder in particular that can and sometimes cannot be found within the Windows directory - \system32, \syswow64, \sysnative.

I have a 1.5TB WD external hard drive. It was running extremely slow so i ran a defrag and it fixed it. But it also has a mac partition on it so i ran the repair disk thing for mac in disk utility.
However my mac is a laptop so it ran out of battery part way through the operation. Now when i plug it in it both the mac and PC it is not picked up in explorer and Disk management (under computer management).

So no partitions show up in either finder on mac or explorer on windows

Edit: When i connect the hard drive it has a flashing light on it like it normally does when it connecting to pc just before it shows up in explorer. It has been flashing like this for hours as it has been plugged into pc this whole time. when it connects and shows up in explorer and is not in use that light normally stays solid

I just installed a refurbished 2TB hard drive. When I fired up the computer, Windows automatically downloaded and installed the drivers, and finished by having a green check beside the words "ready for use." I know this was the drivers for the 2TB hard drive, since it said "Hitachi" at the beginning of the name of the product it was installing the drivers for, and this is the only Hitachi product I own.

However, when enter the Start Menu and select "computer," my main 500GB hard drive is still the only one listed.

What's going on? The computer definitely RECOGNIZES the hard drive! How else could it have installed the drivers automatically upon start-up? So, why the hell isn't it showing up?

Hello, people, new Windows 7 user here and I already need some help. I've got three internal hard drives, and they're all formatted and partitioned. But my D:\ (which is physically the same drive as my C:\) won't show up in Windows Explorer. The drive is installed, formatted and has information written on it. I can go to Internet Explorer and type "D:\" in the address bar and it takes me right there, I can see it in Disk Management. It also gets written to as the only thing so far on that drive is Steam (a game downloading program) and it saves all my games with no problem.

But if I wanted to say, save an image to that drive, it doesn't show up in the "Save As" dialog box. So does anyone have any ideas? Formatting the drive isn't really an option as my OS is on it. Thanks for any help!

I am having a strange problem with my external hard drive for my backups. When I plug the drive in, it does not show up in Windows Explorer. I can make it show up by going into disk management and assigning it a drive letter, but the next time I plug it in, I have the same problem again. Any ideas why this might be occurring?
Edit: Turns out this is not limited to my backup drive. Once I assign a letter, the drives work fine. They will even keep the letter if I eject them and re-insert the USB connection, but any external media I plug in fails to assign a drive letter automatically the first time it is plugged in. While I do not see this as a huge problem, it bothers me that Windows is not working as it used to nor as it should.

Edit2: After reading some of the related forums, I realize I should be clear about a couple things. I am having this problem with drives that have already had their drivers installed in Windows. I do not get a dialog saying that Windows is installing these devices because the devices have already been installed. For some reason, their volume letter has been forgotten by Windows and I have to re-assign it. I am being careful not to use the same letter more than once. I am plugging the drives in while Windows is already running.
Any help would be greatly appreciated so that Windows will automatically assign a drive letter to a device instead of me having to manually do it when Windows forgets what letter it had assigned.

Hi everyone. I'm on a Lenovo 3000 n100 laptop with Vista. Lately I began noticing that the free disk space on my hard drive was filling up, so I deleted most of my movies and games. Now explorer shows me that I have 46GB of space free within my 106GB hard drive, and that I've used 60GB.

However, I am quite positive that I have NOT used 60GB of disk space. Highlighting all of the files in my C drive and hitting "properties" shows that they take up 25GB. I downloaded a program called JDiskReport which shows my disk usage and, as I suspected, only about 30 gigs of disk space is reported in C.

Now, I've run chkdsk and done a system defrag. I've gone into the windows disk cleaner utility and deleted most of the temporary files, including the hibernation files. I cleared all but my most recent system restore point and I also checked my shadowcopy usage in the command line (it says shadowcopy is using only about 1 gig). I ran ccleaner and have done full scans with windows defender and AVG.

Anyway, I'm all out of ideas now and I want to reclaim my 30+ GB of hard drive space! . The 60GB I'm supposedly using was actually around 75GB before I went through all of the above steps, but it still tells me I'm using twice as much disk space as I actually am. I've uploaded a picture below. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Welcome to TechSpot!

Is this a WD drive? Did you run the CD that came with your new HD? Did you check your BIOS and make sure it can handle 250GB drives. If it can't , then you need to run FDISK or some sort of partition software to split the drive into two. So you would start off with 250 split into 125MB D:\, 125MB E:\.

Or you just do the samething using Windows XP Pro Computer Management.
Click on start
click on run
type: compmgmt.msc
scroll down to storage
click on disk management

On your right panel you should see your new HD listed.
Right click on the white shaded with black slanted lines for your drive listed
you should see format

Click on format..
Select a name for your drive (volume)
Example: DATA, SYSTEM an etc..
I would leave the rest to for Windows to setup...

Quite a while back I installed two identical hard drives, one as my C drive and the other a back-up drive.
For some reason still a mystery to me, I only have about 60% capacity on the C drive, while I have virtually 100% capacity available to me on the back-up drive.
They are both 200Gb SATA disks.
Is it possible to transfer EVERYTHING (including Op Sys [Windows XP]) to the back-up drive and then re-format the original C drive disk? I think the error (whatever that is) occurred when I originally formatted those drives.
This is becoming much more of a problem recently since I am running out of useable space on the existing C drive.

I am currently using windows 98 and plan to install XP on a new hard drive.

I have a VIA Technologies KM266-8233 system with a DFI AZ30-EL board with a 1666 MHz AMD Pentium III. The bios is Phoenix Technologies 6.00 PG 08/30/2002.

Will I have any capacity restrictions on the size hard drive I will purchase?

With the intention of gaining extra storage capacity I have added a 1TB internal hard drive to my windows 7 PC. It shows up DATA (E) but is only showing a capacity of 449GB. This drive came from a friend who was disposing of components from a dead Windows 7 PC.
Why does the drive not show full capacity.?

A:Hard Drive capacity question.

Likely someone partitioned it.
Anything useful on there, or is it blank?
If there is, you can either: transfer everything on it to another harddrive, then reformat that drive to use the 1tb in a single partition; or, create a second 500gb partition.

I arrived at work this morning to see some updates were available for WinXP. I have SP2 installed and my system has been running fine with no problems. After the updates were installed my computer needed to be reset.

When it tried to boot back up no operating system was detected. I put in my WinXP disk to try and repair the problem. I got to the partition management option only to see my 200gb drive had been reduced to a mere 131gb.

I checked the BIOS but the correct capacity was being displayed there.

I tried using some Partition Magic rescue disks to redo my partitions. Once again the correct drive capacity was being displayed. I set my partitions and formated the drive in NTFS.

When i returned to WinXP setup's partition management options the partitions i had just set were still present showing the full 200gb capacity but i tried moving on to the format options setup was unable to continue and the 131gb limit was displayed once again.

At this time a delivery man showed up with a brand spanking new 160gb drive which i promtly installed. When i tried to install windows the new drive was also showing a 131gb limit (an identical 131069mb limit to the 200gb drive).

Until i installed the Windows Update my system was reading all hard drives correctly. I have reset the CMOS but it made no difference.

I have run out of things to try...

Look for 48-bit LBA support. This option is hidden somewhere since XP-SP1, a Google should help you further.

Given my new PC has 2TB then should I have a 2TB external hard drive for backup? I'm considering nothing other than equipped capacities. Truthfully, I currently have no idea how much of that 2TB will be used. I just want to be on the safe side.

Thanks

You should consider updating to SP3.

The "Max Volume Size" depends on the partition type and in some cases whether third party drivers are installed.

NTFS compared to FAT and FAT32
NTFS vs FAT vs exFAT
What are the maximum volume sizes and maximum file sizes for the various Windows file systems?

I'm a bit perplexed. I ordered the 1TB hard drive, however tonight when I went to look at the capacity under "my computer" I see the capacity is only at 118GB.   That isn't close to the 1TB I paid for.  Help me understand what the issue here is.  I'm pretty tech savvy but am confused on this. I apologize if this isn't the proper area to pose this question.... Thank you.

Hi everyone. I have an issue with the capacity on my HD. Heres the problem, when I open up the Computer window and look at my HD, it says "106GB free of 149GB" but when I go to the system information it says that the capacity of my HD is 160GB. So, where's the 11GB? It is really annoying knowing that there should be an extra 11GB. Where has the 11GB dissappeared to? Does anyone know? Thanks in advance!
