Basic network help

Q: Basic network help

OK. Seriously. This is pathetic. I've been trying to get 2 Vista machines to see each others files. It's not working. Can someone give me some basic Vista networking help? How do I get 2 Vista machine to see each others files on the C:\ of both computers? I need to get Peachtree Accounting to read/ write on both computers. Any help would be great.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

i've two computers sitting next to each other

i've a broadband modem which is connected into a network switch. from this switch, a nework cable goes into each of my pcs, so they can both access the internet

i had set them up originally so they could share files and i could map network drives from each pc on the other. they have different computer names but have the same workgroup name

all of a sudden today, when i go to open 'my network places' i can't access anything on either computer from the other

any ideas as to how i can get the computers to see each other on this little network again?

(both running xp)

both have permissions set up to allow access to other computers on the network

problem really is that on each pc they seem to be on the network, just neither can see the other

cheers

I have Comcast as my ISP and use their modem for cable TV, internet and phone service. I have a Netgear router with wired connections to two Dell Win 7 desktop pcs and a wireless connection to a Win 7 laptop.

I recently installed a small app called "Who is on my wifi"and on running its scan it detects my pc, my daughters pc, the router and the laptop.

I guess I lack fundamental knowledge of wifi networks and am confused by the scan findings.

When I first installed my Dell pc, it automatically detected the router and connected wirelessly. I later was informed that better download speeds would result if I used an ethernet wired connection to the Netgear router. Some time later my daughter installed her new Dell pc and I connected it to the router with an ethernet wired connection. So both desktop pcs now have wired ethernet connections.

Here is my dumb novice question: if the two desktop pcs have wired ethernet connections why is the "Who is on my wifi" scan showing them to be wifi devices? Is it possible that the two desktop pcs are somehow still connecting to the internet wirelessly despite the fact that they have wired ethernet connections?

Any insights would be appreciated,

Frank

Hi.. I think the term WiFi is not really indicating wireless, I have a Netgear router and I can pull up the connected devices.. and that is all that is needed In My Opinion.
So, just because some application says they are connected, does not necessarily mean they are wireless..

Hi
Iím wanting to setup a simple office network of 3 PCís so I can share files and one printer. The network is connected via a four port switch built into an ADSL router. All PCís currently have access to the internet and are running XP pro.
Starting on my main PC (with printer) I disable simple networking (which I donít want) and run network wizard to setup the appropriate network. I opt to enable file and printer sharing - Iím told in a pop up that this is not recommended as anyone on the Internet may be able to access my files and printer!!! (WTF!). I cautiously disconnect my patch lead and go ahead, then reboot as instructed.
Iím now worried about security so click on a drive letter and view sharing. Itís shared but with a $ sign after (C $). I select Ďdo not shareí and apply. I now have a popup saying Ďthis share was created for administrative purposes only and that it will reappear when rebooted, do I want to continue? (WTF again!!) I look at the security tab and everybody and their dog is invited ( administrator, creator, everyone, system, users). This is the same for my second partition root D: and second drive E: . I now don't now what the hell is going on, but I don't like it.
Is this normal? Am I safe? This seems like a shabby way to layout network configurations, I suspect that as no child folders are proclaimed as being shared that this may be the norm but I just can't trust it as I need my data to be secure, so I've removed fi... Read more

Hi there

We are just in the process of ordering a few Dell pcs for work that come standard with Vista basic. The guy at dell said that these will not work on a network, and said we are better going with XP pro at extra costs per computer.

Is this correct? The computers have to be linked for sage accounts, probably one will connect to the net.

If hes right and Vista basic will not work on a network, should we upgrade to Vista business.

Thanks for your time

At present PC1 can drag and drop to the desktop of PC2. That's all I have - it was set up by a techy friend who is no longer available - and it's through the 'My network places'.

PC1 and PC2 run ME. PC3 runs XP.

I have a few questions about simple WIndows 7 home networking. First, here are the various elements I have encounterd (let's leave any domain stuff out of this for now). There's the Workgroup, the LAN network, the wireless network and then the home group.
Could someone explain to me how all these elements are supposed to work and be configured just to set up a simple network for file sharing? I would also like to be able to use either Remote Desktop or Assistance if possible.
Actually, the file sharing thing is working - I have set up the public folders on computer A and can access that public folder from computer B. But I like things neat and tidy so that's why I would like to understand more of what's happening. One computer A, a created a LAN network and gave it a name. But on computer B, I would like t join this network, but it has already given me a network name (Network1). When I go to change the network, it brings up wireless neworks - how do I join the original network?
Can this LAN network and the wireless network be the same thing, or must they be different networks?
What about the Workgroup and Homegroup - do these these offer any advantages and if so how do I set them up? Thanks.
I am running WIndows 7 Home Premium SP1 on both computer.

A:Home Network Basic Configuration

Short answer: You get a network by sticking a cable between 2 computers. Wireless is the same thing just without a physical cable. Workgroup and HomeGroup are just something MS invented for LANs. As long as you have the cable between 2 computers and the IPs are in the same network segment, they will share resources. HomeGroup is just a way to make the trust and sharing between computers easier. You just select the HomeGroup and enter the password and you are done. Once you set up HomeGroup, you can just right click a folder and share it easily.

That network name (Network1) is not relevant. Create a HomeGroup on 1 PC and join to it with the other. With our basic home routers wired and wireless connections are both in the same network segment, there may be some that can configure a different one for wireless though.

I have run without a HomeGroup for years and haven't faced any issues. As long as it works, it will simplify your job. As you learn more about networking, you may find it redundant. Possibly better when you have more than a couple PCs at home.

Sorry, can't go into much detail due to time, if you have any specific questions, ask away.

I'm trying to find the settings required to set up a Linksys WAG54G Wireless G ADSL Gateway on BTBroadband Basic. It's almost there as the laptop connects to it but I can't access the internet. I suspect it may be a password problem but I'm not certain.

BTBroadband's help page has some info but not all. Can anyone help with these two questions.......

- What I should put in as a password? It says there's no password required but the router demands one. BTBroadband Help says that in such cases you just need to put in BT as the password but that didn't work.

- Do I need to add Host Name and Domain Name details? Their instructions for setting up their own router on the Voyager package seem to suggest that something is required in there.

Unfortunately they don't give telephone support for this kind of thing.

Thanks.

P.S. - Is there a site anywhere that gives definitive settings for all combinations of ISP's and hardware?

I am trying to figure out a fix once and for all for online gaming with my freind. Basically I and another person at my house connect to the net via a router and we attempt to play a game online through game spy with another person over the net. Now that rarely work and we've tried so many things. Then I discovered Hamachi, and things seemed to work until "something" stopped working with that.

So here is my question can someone explain to me if this is possible. I want to make a Virtual Private Lan the same way Hamachi does it, except without Hamachi. I figure that VPN's made by free software may be less effective than say going out and purchasing some client like Cisco or something. I have zero clue on what exactly it would require so I just wanted to know what are the basics as far as setting up a VPN. I know my freind gets a static IP. Anyways, any help would be great I just want to learn what it is I would have to do.

Hi there, this is my first post, hoping to get some help on this issue.

My boss and I are trying to configure a LAN connection in the office, I have a Vista Basic OS, and we also have 2 computers with Vista Home Premium and XP Pro. I've tried to follow several tutorials on the net with no success, and the main problem is that my computer (the one with Vista Home Basic) can connect to the other Vista Home Premium just fine, but they can't connect to mine.

I configured the computers as follows:

-Changed the PC Name and work group to WORKGROUP

-On Network and Sharing Center, I set the network to Private, enabled Network Discovery, File sharing, printer sharing and disabled the use of password.

-Created a folder, and shared with everyone on this group

When trying to connect to other computers from my computer, it works fine, but the other computers, when trying to connect to my computer have this error: Error Code: 0x80070035 - The network path was not found

Is there a problem with Vista Home Basic than can't allow other computers to connect to it? Or is there another configuration i'm missing on the first place?

I would very much appreciate your help on this issue. Thanks

well, normally ... when i go to network places, and surf to the workgroup and the computer, it asks for a password ...

what gives? what causes this?

sometimes, i get different results

sometimes, i find that if no folder on that computer is shared, then that happens ... once i share a folder, it just logs in, no password

scenario 2:

Need help with new network. Using Linksys router w/DSL and three XP Home Edition computers. Ran the setup on all three computers and in My Network Places I can see all the computer names. Want to start by sharing printer. Shared the printer on the main computer by right clicking and selecting share. When I go to other computers, I cannot get to anything except the other computer names by double clicking. When I click on the local computer's icon I can see that local computer's printers installed.

Two computers use Zone Alarm and one has Windows Firewall. I added the subnet address in the trusted zone in answer to help I found on the Zone Alarm site.

I figured it is a access permissions issue. Looked that up on Windows Help. It said to right click on the printer and change things in the security tab. There is no security tab to select. More help said to open network connections and click on 'incoming connections'. There is no such selection available to me in network connections.

I'm stumped, can someone help?

Is this what the remote computer option is on XP & W7 ?

A:Basic questions on Home network options

There is no way to run programs from another computer unless you use remote desktop software like the built-in program or TeamViewer.

To use the built-in client, first enable it:

Attachment 63218

Then to use it, start typing remote desktop connection into the start menu and press enter.

Then enter the computer name that you want to log into.

   Note
Only the Professional and higher editions of XP and 7 support hosting a remote desktop session. If you have the home version of XP, you will be able to connect to the 7 machine, but not the other way around.

If this is the case, consider using the free alternative TeamViewer instead.

OK...so first of all I'm a noob to this stuff so please bear with me. Here is what I'm wondering.

I just opened an office for my new business. This office will have an always-on (cable) internet connection. We intend to have one central computer on which we do all of our production work (herein referred to as "The Office Computer"). We (my business partner and myself) will also be carrying laptops around with us (all computers will be on Vista 64). We would really like to be able to have an email server on The Office Computer that we can access on our laptops when we are away from the office. Potentially, we would also like to be able to get emails immediately from our SmartPhones (or maybe Blackberrys).

Is there a reasonable way to do this? Can a regular desktop be used as a server AND as a work station? I've read up a little bit on Microsoft Exchange Server and it seems like overkill. I also see a lot of offers from various companies to host my exchange server, but the monthly fees seem excessive.

I know there are ways that you can connect to a computer remotely, but that isn't really what I'm trying to do. It's mostly about email and perhaps some file-sharing.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. If you can even point me in the direction of some good resource material I'm not opposed to reading it and educating myself.

Thanks in advance!!

A:Help with basic exchange server / home network question

You probably don't want the security headache of hosting an e-mail server locally. You can go through g-mail and one of their hosting services and set up a domain and accomplish everything you are after without the security headaches.

If you want to setup and in house mail server you need and IDS system running on your network and be able to understand what it is telling you. If you have a mail server it will get hacked and you need to know when and what to do about it.

As for the file sharing install a VPN router to get remote access to your network.

Hey there -

I have an Inspiron 1521 and today upgraded it from Home Basic to Home Premium (had to do a "clean" install, though my old files seem to have been saved in a Windows.old folder). Now I'm trying to connect to my router wirelessly however my laptop can't find any networks when I search (using wired connection now; usually my network and a few others appear). When I performed a diagnostics test I read "The wireless network adapter on this computer cannot connect to a wireless network" and two options pop up:
1) Click for information on troubleshooting network adapter problems (not helpful)
2) The network adapter "Broadcom 802.11n" is experiencing driver or hardware related issues

In Device Manager for the Broadcom network adapter there is a little caution symbol and under Device Status it says: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available (no response)."
So I'm not really sure what happened; I tried updating the driver but it's up to date and I don't know what could've happened during the upgrade process. I'm not very gifted at working with computers so I may have overlooked something simple. Any ideas on what I can do next? I appreciate any assistance anyone can offer.

A:Solved: Network Adapter Issues After Upgrading Basic to Premium

It sounds like you did a fresh (not update) install. Get the latest wireless adapter driver for your system from Dell's web site. Probably better, to be safe, to first get the package of chipset drivers. Use your Service tag for easier searching.

Hey all,

I was having a discussion with a fellow member of IT. And as we talked he told me that he didn't see any benefit to assigning IPs consecutively on a network. Our network has about 300 users and I told him there are some benefits related to deployment of software, monitoring back ups and etcetera.

Could anyone help weigh in on this debate? I was told that DHCP helps to counter spyware because as it acquires IP's to attack the user just gets a new one and therefore he is no longer under attack. But I believe that logic would imply the person who gets the old IP is now getting attacked.

Anyone other views ?

A:Setting up a basic home network with 2 Cisco 2600 Routers and switch

we always need nat.

Most of the time the connections look like
Code:

modem----router --- other devices and/or switchs --- still more devices
There are a FEW cases where the modem needs to be set to BRIDGE mode, but
don't go there unless it all fails.

Keep it simple to start with [ modem---router---one system]

My girlfriend's laptop (HP pavilion entertainment) only recently had these problems.

-When shutting down, it stalls on the shutdown screen where it says "Shutting Down...", and the spinner keeps spinning.

-Both her LAN and wireless connections suddenly only have "local only" access. I've tried restarting CMOS/BIOS (not sure) by holding down the power button for 30 secs and reinstalled the network adapter drivers but both to no avail. I have also read about many other people with vista having this problem, but nobody had a definite solution.
Thanks ALOT for any help =)

1) I have Laptop and PC connected with lan cabel. They are both with Windows Vista Home Basic 32bit.
They both have no problems with internet.
They have the same WORKGROUP names.
Both have real IPs.
I see each other on the Network but i can not connect to them... (it was all OK when I was on XP...)
>When I try to connect from the Laptop to the PC i recive: "Error code 0x80070035", I click on Diagnose and I see this.
I tried to turn off the Firewall and the NOD32 antivirus, but ... nothing changed ....
The Sharing and Discovery Settings are OK, like this.

2) I give share permissions to my network.

3) May be I have to install "Client" for "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" but is no listed 'Client' or 'Servise' to use.

4) I found I have to allow permissions in the firewall to some ports like:
-TCP 139
-UDP 137
-UDP 138
-TCP 445
... I did this ...
Give me some help how to manage with my network so I can browse both computers, copy files and so on ...
Thanks in advance

Hi everyone,

I've been trying to get my feet wet in creating a .vbs file from notepad to do a basic function. I wanted to be able to run .reg files remotely but also interactively. This led me down the path of simply finding an example of a .vbs that would open anything remotely at all. Notepad is what came up with the most results and the Win32_ScheduledJob object appeared to be what was needed.

I researched many different places but this is a decent walkthrough. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa394601(v=vs.85).aspx

I grabbed the code below out of the website and changed the date parameters to run in a couple minutes from my current time. I could see the task in scheduled tasks but when the time had come and gone nothing would happen and this is just trying to get it to run locally so far.

strComputer = "."
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _
& "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" _
& strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
JobID = "Test"
Set objNewJob = objWMIService.Get("Win32_ScheduledJob")
errJobCreate = objNewJob.Create _
("Notepad.exe", "********143000.000000-420", _
True , 1 OR 4 OR 16, ,True, JobId)
If errJobCreate = 0 Then
WScript.Echo "Job created successfully: " & VBNewLine _

There are too many variables and other things you need to know, you just don't throw out commands and thigs work. Get a good book on VB programming and use any of the help or online tutorials that come with VB. There also plenty of forums on the net that are specific to programming.

Hello,

I guess my question can be asked in two ways, the short way and the long way.

Here's the short one:

Can you do everything that you can do with VBA with VB?
The long one is:

I need to be able to write programs that conceivably invovle web forms/web services (VB right?), Microsoft SQL Server 2002 (VB again right?) but also Microsft Office applications like Excel and Access (VBA??). Does that mean I need to learn both Visual Basic and Visual Basic for Applications? In my initial research into Visual Basic I've learned that Visual Basic for Applications is a subset of Visual Basic, so shouldn't that mean that Visual Basic, being the parent and more powerful than Visual Basic for Applications, is capable of performing all of the functions that Visual Basic for Applications does?

Thanks for your help,
Bsdslayer
([email protected])

A:Solved: Visual Basic vs. Visual Basic for Applications

I do not know VB at all, only some VBA. The main difference is that VBA has words specifically for the applications, a classic exanple would be the
Range("a65536").End(xlUp)
both range and .End(xlUp) are for use in Excel.

PCs are Win 7 Ultimate, All are joined to the Domain
Domain Controller, DNS, DHCP Server (on same instance) is Server 2012 standard
The network topology is like this: Router as Internet Gateway>Switch>Wired to Server and PC's, SIP phones, and Wireless Access Point all on same subnet. DNS and DHCP have been offloaded to Server Roles and switched off on the router.
All of the PCs have network cards that have joined the domain network at least some of the time since I set them up.
Some of them have always picked up the domain network and continue to this day.
Some of them intermittently pick up the domain network and other times join whatever other unmanaged network is available.
Some of them have stopped picking up the domain network altogether and will, no matter how many times their NICs are restarted, always join a non-domain (unmanaged) network.
When the NICs are not joining the domain, they are unable to ping hostnames of any devices on the network but nslookup of the hostnames usually works. The DC, DNS, DHCP server's IP can be pinged without issue, ipv4 or ipv6.
I am recording DNS Client Errors (ID 1014) on all of the PCs during the intervals when their NICs are identifying which network to join.

-On the PCs that are catching the domain network I am only getting a single error about the root domain, eg the domain is ad.domain.com and I am only getting errors about how the configured DNS servers cannot resolve domain.com (nothing with fully qualified

Does anyone know of a good website where I can get pretty simple instructions on how to wipe out a hard drive then reload the OS from the ground up?

I know how to format a hard drive, but I'm real iffy on how to get things going after that.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Basic Help

If you're talking about just formatting and installing, when you put the installation CD in, assuming you have one of those, during setup, it'll ask you whether or not, and how you want to format the drive.
Select format, and you're golden, setup will continue with the installation.
Peace.

Hello,
I am new here. I just got a new computer with windows 7. My previous was xp. This is a little overwhelming some of the changes.
I am not sure if my question belongs to this forum or if i should go to the manufacturer's forum
I have a partian on my computer
~OS is c drive, and that is where the program files seem to be going iwith 116 gb
~then there is a Data D drive with over 320 gb
~then a Q drive which is in accessable with Office 2010 on there...which i removed from the program files and installed office 2007

1. how do i get rid of q drive...it will not let me access?
2. am i doing right by placing the program files into c drive?
3 is d drive for all data files...ie a word file or excell file?

Oh yes, I did do a system recover back up on 5 CD's before i started anything.

Your help would be greatly appreciated and in advance thank you!

A:some basic help please

If it will help you, C drive is always your operating system drive, you do not want to mess with it. It is where windows 7 is located and where you normally install programs. D drive is a data drive - it is where many people place their data. That would be used for things like your my documents, my photos, my music etc. You would do that for several reasons. If your system becomes corrupted or inoperable you would not lose some of your most valuable things. Some things like family photos, many of your documents and such are difficult to replace. It also saves space on your C drive. If your system becomes inoperable, it will most likely be the operating system. That and your programs can be replaced. Without knowing, I cannot tell you about the Q drive.

Who installed your operating system? If Asus installed it, it could be a recovery partition or something, but usually they are not given a drive letter like Q. If Asus installed it, there should be an explanation in your owners manual.

I would suggest that when you first come on this site look in the very top on the right side. There is an extensive collection of tutorials. They are written by members of this forum and are very good. You can learn many things that you can do with windows 7.

If that does not help, you come back but you should provide us with an image of disk management. You can get there by typing disk manahement into the search box when you click on the windows button on the bottom left of your screen. then... Read more

I thought that I should find a guide on building a custom PC. However, the things I read made me realize that I might be able to save money (and get desired results faster) by using what I already have (i.e. case, MB, HDD, CPU, GPU and ROM drive).
