portable drives - Crystaldisk "caution"

Q: portable drives - Crystaldisk "caution"

I have two portable drives at home and I haven't had any issues with them but for a few months each time I viewed their health status in CrystalDisk I could see the same information for both of them "caution" with a yellow dot. Here's more information for each disk :

Disk 1 :

ID C5 current pending sector - current 100 worst 100 - threshold 0 - raw values 000000000008

Disk 2 :

ID 05 reallocation sectors count - current 100 worst 100 - threshold 36 - raw values 000000000006

Should I be worried or not and what does that mean?

Thanks for your help.

Preferred Solution: portable drives - Crystaldisk "caution"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a portable drive and it's still working fine but when I connect it to my computer and check CrystalDisk I see health status "caution" and in Reallocated sectors count - current 100, worst 100, threshold 36, raw 000000000006. I don't have much data on that disk and I was wondering if I will be able to keep using it for a while?

Thanks for your help.

Hey everyone,
I am trying to get the REST queries to work with the sharepoint end points instead of graph end points. I first created an app with relevant permissions and have given it the admin consent. Then I am hitting the https://login.microsoftonline.com/<tenant>.onmicrosoft.com/oauth2/token?Content-Type=application/x-www-form-urlencoded end
point with https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com as resource. I am then using the access token retrieved to give the rest call to https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com/_api/v2.0/drives/b!3indYSbqZ0-hVSPnCgIZy-2xDMh7jH9AuQnEzJMc6TEfQoSJvJT-R6tT0lFBQiPr/root/delta
but it is failing with "error":{"code":"generalException","message":"General exception while processing"}}. The REST response code is 401 Unauthorized. I have filed a Microsoft support ticket but they
have asked me to post on these forms. Can someone please help me with this? I am not able to move forward because the error is pretty generic and doesn't give any additional details.

I just recently ran CrystalDiskInfo and it said that my hard disk health status is "Caution". I also recently updated my laptop to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 and that's when I felt my laptop got slower. But it isn't that slow, as in it isn't annoying, but should I be worried? What should I do?

A:My hard disk has health status "Caution", should I worry?

The first thing to do would be take and post up a screen capture of the Crystalinfo window.

The 'Caution' message could be to do with any of various issues and the guys here who know their stuff (unfortunately my knowledge of 'stuff' is a bit limited) will need to see all the content before passing comment.

Here's a strange one. All of my DVD-RW drives are appearing as Local Disks when I view them in "My Computer". Moist of the drives in question are external (firewire and USB) however my integrated DRD-RW is also effected. Oddly, all of the drives are fully functional when used for burning/playing media, and they all appear properly in the Windows Disk Management console and applications that would require optical media (burning software and the like). That being the case, I guess this is more in the "annoyance" category as functionality is not the problem. In any case, I have tried all the quick fixes I can think of, i.e.; change drive letters and reboot, uninstall and search for new hardware, disable/enable. In all of the above operations, the drives briefly re-appear in "My Computer", all listed simply as " CD Drive". However, once I've accessed any of the drives they revert to "Local Disk".

This is a rather new W7 x64 PC. Didn't notice anything strange with the drives initially. The problem just sort of appeared after a reboot. Any explanations/suggestions appreciated

New to the forum, hoping to find answers or new ideas to try...
My Win7 OS computer has problems seeing my WD network drives most of the time. I'll say up front that my Macbook, my Windows XP laptops, all other computers of various types in my house see and access these drives just fine, but the one with Windows 7 Pro will not. It occasionally will see and access them for short periods of random time though, which really has me baffled. These drives are right on the same network switch as the Win7 computer.

The scenario goes like this:click on the drive name to view contents... 20 or so seconds pass, popup says "Windows cannot access \\drive-name".
I try the second NAS drive, same thing.
I try the "diagnose" feature to no avail. I've even explored some of the "explore additional options" suggestions to no avail.
I can ping the IP addresses of both these drives all day long and they respond without fail.
Weird thing is that very occasionally I will click the drive and the file folders show up and I can transfer files, or whatever I want, for a short random period of time.
I swear, this problem is driving me crazy! I've been resorting to using a flash drive to transfer files on this computer's HD to the WD network drives via an XP OS computer, or via the Macbook. I like Windows 7 other than this very frustrating problem.
Soooo... any ideas or suggestions? Anyone else have this issue and figured it out??
TIA for any and all comment... Read more

How about right clicking the non C drive - clicking Properties - Security tab? Setting full control there for the entire drive? Does that work for you bro?

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

Further explanation: I've set 1 virtual drive with Daemon Tools, which should be shown in My computer, but isn't. Also my two hardware CD/DVD Drives aren't recognized, and when I put discs in it, nothing shows up (I can't burn as well).

I'm trying to run KM Player in portable mode (no install) in Vista x64 and save preferences in KMPCfg.ini. Just extracting the KMP installer files to a folder allows it to play files just fine, if open them from KMP UI.

I want to open files from Explorer folders, by R clicking & selecting "Open With." Without installing KMP, of course it's not on the list of programs. NOR will it PUT KMP on the list if I browse to it's folder & the .exe file (even if check, "Always use this program to open this kind of file." I suppose the reason KMP doesn't show up in the "Open With" list (and won't let me add it) is because necessary registry entries weren't created by installing it.

Same thing happened when I tried associating a file type w/ KMP (like .wmv), through Control Panel. It wouldn't change the association when I browsed to the executable.

I used the utility OpenWithAdd utility to supposedly register KMP to show up in the Open With list. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/openwithadd.htm
It actually added a KMP registry entry for .WMV files in

But, I guess it still doesn't show up on the Open With list because there aren't any other registry entries w/ KMP'... Read more

Well, no gurus? Maybe can add a portable app to "open with" context (dunno), but you can add it to the "Send To" context, then use that when R click files in explorer.

Copy or drag icon you want to the user's Send To folder under the user's acct. It'll be there when you want to send select files to the app.

Well, I just received a new MP3 player, it works great, but there is one problem. Immediately after purchasing an 8 GB USB flash drive with the intention of running portable applications off it on the various Windows XP machines I have to use, I had installed the Portable Apps Base (http://portableapps.com/suite) and then through it, several applications, including OpenOffice Portable, Firefox portable and Tucan Portable.

Probably after using the drive on one of my office computers, some files and folders seemed to become corrupted. After trying unsuccessfully to delete mysterious, un-openable files with special characters in their names that appeared seemingly from nowhere, I formated the drive.

After formating, I was able to copy data and music files from my computer's hard drive to the flash drive correctly. However, I am now unable to properly re-install the PortableApps Base program on the flash drive. Thus, the main purpose of buying it is

Alright, so I bought a new portable harddisk, the samsung 3 1tb. However for some reason my pc does detect it, but is not able to run it. it gives me the error that it is an unknown device.

However, i tried the Hdd on several other pcs, and it worked fine, leaving me the conclusion that my pc is at fault. After recommendations from a friend, i tried to find myself some updated drivers for my motherboard, specifically usb drivers. However, my driver CD, aswell as the Asus site did not support my operating system (Windows 7, 64 bit).

I am not aware of any - that is what laptops are for. However Cooler Master makes the Storm Scout case with a built in handle on top - but it kind of looks like an old 5 gallon gas can:

Maybe you could invent something a get rich. Might be a demand for something like that - maybe a could of straps that would wrap around the computer and connect to a handle on top where the straps could be synched up. You could leave it on one computer or use it for any computer you wanted to move or lug around.

I purchased this keypad to use with my MacBookPro, but it will not recognize the keypad. It instructs me to press they key next to the "Shift" key, but since it is a numeric keypad, there is no shift key, and therefore no key next to it. I have searched online for a driver that I could download, but there does not seem to be one that I could find. The keypad did state that it was compatible with Mac OS, so I fear that the company lied to me, but I cannot find their company online, and therefore I cannot complain to management. They included no tech support lines on the packaging. I have attempted to contact a company online which sells the same item, but have yet received no response. I may not have waited long enough, but I feel since you will take about the same amount of time as they are now using, I should try to use this forum. The numeric keypad works just fine when I hook it up to my PC running XP, but I cannot find the driver that allows it to work there so that I could transfer it to the Mac. Also, since they are very different Operating Systems, I would fear that it wouldn't work even if I could find the driver in this way. Any suggestions?

I am trying to defragment a portable hard drive (USB 2.0), but the volume is dirty (CHKDSK is scheduled to run on a system reboot), but that isn't going to happen since it's a USB hard drive and isn't "visible" until Windows is in the picture.

Hi Asynja,

did you use any switches when running chkdsk from the command line? As long as there are no locked system files on the drive, you should be able to run chkdsk /r /f on it when Windows is running which may be able to detect some problems.

Hi everyone,
I have bought a new WD external hard drive ( what they call the "essential series" ). It's 160 gigs in capacity. The thing is powered by an extrenal power source.
Now I've used external hard drives ( from my friends ) before. But that one was a truly portable hard drive, unlike my new one ( meaning it didnt need an extrenal power source and was very much lightweight / easy-to-carry-around ).
There are two types of extrenal hard drives that Ive identified , in the market. One that is powered by the power source ( which is refrrd to as an "Extrenal Hard Disk" and the others that are not ( "called as "Portable Hard Drives". So my new 160 gig xternal hard falls under the former.

Can these types of hard drives ("Exteral Hard Drives" ) be used as a portable hard drive ( I mean carrying it around ) ?

Are the Portable Hard drives meant to be more rigid than the Exteranl ones ?

A:How "portable" is my new WD extrenal hard drive ?

technically your hard drive should be just as durable as any other portable hard drive (within reason). Obviously its best to take care of these things no matter how durable they are intended to be. The only main draw back is obviously its slightly larger than most common portables. I shouldn't think you would have any trouble moving it around though!

You can transfer your data, but not system files. If this is related to your previous post about optical media, is it safe to assume you do not do regular backups of your data? If so, now's a good time to start. Buy a portable external hard drive, and use that to transfer your data from one system to another. Then use it to make frequent, regular backups of your data on the new system.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

Error:  Access is denied.
And I try it in Safe Mode.It is also "Access is denied.".
Can someone
help me?

Hi TimFF,
This might be related with the UAC settings, check this thread:
give full permission for the users in program
files folder
The steps in the above thread is not recommended.
For the short name usage, we may consider to create a directory-junction from
PROGRA~1 to C:\Program Files:
With the following commands:
mklink /J "C:\PROGRA~1" "C:\Program Files"

I am infected with this crap and have used the following tools to try to get rid of it:
Windows Defender, Unible PowerSuite (SpeedUpMyPC, Registry Booster & Spyware Protector) and Norton's One Button Checkup and WinDoctor.

Not sure if it's related, but my DISPLAY is locked at 640 X 480.

Atempted the 5 Step Process before posting and Panda ActiveScan froze and crashed after scanning 59253 files, but not before identifying 28 spyware files.

Here's my extra.txt log from Deckard's:

It seems that no matter how I set this, after the next start-up it reverts to "15 minutes".  What registry key controls this?

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

Hello all,

Can anybody could tell me whether or not a program exists that can play any (but preferably DivX/XviD) popular encoding schemes -- portably?

I have some videos that I'd like to present in class. But when I brought a test clip in, WMP played only the audio to the clip. There, I have very restricted permissions -- I cannot run programs that require installation. An optimal solution would be a program that can fit on a USB flash drive -- to run an AVI off a CD.

I have now a copy of VLC. Tell me, will this accomplish what I'm hoping? If not, is there anything you suggest?

Thanks in advance,

A:"Portable" codecs?

VLC Portable Edition should accomplish what you need.

It's the same VLC but it runs off a USB drive with no install required. (You'll need to unpack it on your main PC once and extract to the USB drive, but then it will run off USB)

If the video plays on the portable VLC it should play in your classroom.

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!
Thank you!

Welcome to the forum.

Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Also, save a copy as a .txt file and include it also (it's much more difficult to read, but we have greater success in getting the info from it).

Pay close attention to Part 3 of the tutorial "If you have errors"
Test the RAM with Memtest86+ for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.

Monitor hardware temperature with system monitoring software like Speccy or HWMonitor. Upload a screen shot of the Summary tab as well:Piriform - Speccy
