Preferred Solution: How to bypass fan error on Thinkpad x220. Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Lenovo community, Today my Thinkpad x220 stopped working and is giving me a fan error. Is anyone able to give advice how to fix this? I was able to reboot once since but had no such luck again. Previously I've had problems with overheating already, which might be related (idk). I've checked the connection between fan and motherboard already: It is propperly plugged in. Other forum posts suggest a power drain by repeatedly pressing the power button for 10 to 30 seconds (depending on poster) without any power sources attached. This does not worked. @richk explained elsewhere that it might be due to (a) the fan, (b) a fuse, or (c) fan sensors being broken. As he suggests, I've checked whether the fan spins up before the fan error is reported (by visual inspection after removing the keyboard). The fan moves a tiny bit as if it was to start spinning. However it doesn't really spin and only falls back into the same position. Unfortunately I'm long out of warranty and can't affort to send my ThinkPad to support for them to tell me they can't fix it. Does anyone know what the most likely cause is? Will replacing the fan solve the problem? Is it worth sending it to support even outside warranty? I've also read here in the forum that lubricating the fan bearing solved a similar problem for some users. Should I try that? In short: Is there hope to get my computer working again or have a just gained an expensive paperweight? Any hel... Read more

So i just purchased a very good condition X220 from ebay for around $90 to supplement my amazing Thinkpad W541. I'm really happy with the X220 and I probably like the keyboard even more so than the Chicklet style keyboard found on my Thinkpad W541. The only thing that troubles me however is the fact that I'm unable to get the memory utilization to utilize the full installed memory (which it rightfully detects at 16gb). I'm utilizing the latest unadulterated BIOS. The RAM modules are rated at 1333 mhz each. What's going on? A:Thinkpad X220 only recognizes 8gb of RAM, why?

Hi PulloSagata,

If you are running Windows 10 32 bit, the machine will only address less than 4 Gb of memory.

I'm guessing you are running Windows 10, 32 bit.  Look in Control Panel, System  and see what version you are running.

Greetings everyone, I currently have a Lenovo Thinkpad W541 as my main powerhouse driver that I use for Computer Science related work (School and Work). It's an awesome machine, and I love it, I have 28 gb of RAM in it. I will continue to use it daily without a doubt, but I did not want to continue taking it with me everywhere, so I went on eBay and ordered a refurbed (but super condition) Thinkpad X220 for less than $100. It comes with a 300gb hard drive which I won't replace because as aforementioned my Thinkpad W541 is my main baby. However, it only has 4gb of RAM. I want to max it out to 16gb once I receive it sometime this week. I read elsewhere on forums that X220's do allow 16gb of RAM. Another question is does it matter what kind RAM from a speed perspective I purchase? Thanks!

Hello Sorry for the following long post, but I want to mention every point that might be important concerning my problem. Preliminary note:I can't really affort to buy a new laptop right now and I need one quite urgently for a continuing education which starts this week. So, I soon need to know, how to proceed - whether I actually need a new laptop or can continue to use my current one. About 3 months ago my Laptop (Thinkpad X220 with Windows 7) suddenly stopped after a normal boot, short after Windows was running - maybe because of a power issue or a memory failure, I'm not sure what really caused it. Several trials to boot it again failed. A few days later, after I had removed and reconnected most parts 2 or 3 times, including the CMOS battary, the laptop finally started up. But the next time (after a regular shutdown) it again didn'st start up. I disconnected the CMOS battary again and and started up the laptop. Then I put it to sleep only but again couldn't start it normally. I tried the same with Hibernate without success. However, a direct restart from within Windows always worked without any problem. Before trying anything more, I downloaded and ran the Lenovo Quick Test software (Diagnostic Tool). At first I ran it online, where no error turned out. Then I ran it two times offline (with a USB stick) by chosing the full test. The results didn't show any specific indication of a hardware failure. During the first full run the WLAN test failed and dur... Read more

A new CMOS battery would certainly be a cheap fix and is worth a try, but normally if the CMOS batters dies it just will not save the BIOS settings, however, I have heard people who said a dead CMOS battery prevented their system from booting up until they replaced it, and described having no problem with Start >> Shutdown >> Restarts, while turning the system off and back on failed similar to what you describe.    The "Me is in recovery state" is also BIOS related (corruption) so I would follow the advice on replacing the CMOS battery if I were you. If you have a multimeter, you could also check the battery for voltage, which should be 3v DC when new, and any battery reading less the 2v DC probably should be replaced. .     It is very unlikely that RAM is the issue, and I doubt that your system board has gone bad since it was booting intermittently just fine until you left it off for an extended period. Good Luck,

Hi, Yesterday I bought a used X220 Tablet - the version with Gorilla Glass - and installed Windows 10 Pro (64 bit) on it.What a great little computer this is! But what disappointed me was the lack of precision of the pen that came with the tablet. Unfortunately I could not find a setting - or program - to calibrate the pen. On this forum I learned that a lot of owners have to deal with a pen that is not accurate. On one of the posts I read it was mentioned that the digitizer in the X220 Tablet is made by Wacom, so I went their website for a recent drivers. Luckily, I soon found an appropriate tool, the Wacom Hardware Check, on ftp://ftp.wacom-europe.com/pub/WINDOWS/WacomHardwareCheck.exe . After downloading and running it, I was told:"You have hardware that is compatible with the Wacom FEEL driver. You can download the latest driver here: http://www.wacom.com/feeldriver " The URL led to a file on http://cdn.wacom.com/u/drivers/TabletPC/ISD_DualTouch_732-12.exeThe file is about 24 Mb in size. After downloading and installing it, I was able to calibrate the screen, with 25(!) calibration points. Accuracy is great now; not only in landscape, but also in portrait mode! Since I found no reference on this forum to the Wacom FEEL driver in combination with the X220 Tablet running on Windows 10, I thought it might be interesting to others in this forum. Cheers!

1. Has the new battery always delivered only 4 hours on a charge or is this a recent change?

2. Could you please post the detailed battery status from ThinkVantage Power Manager. In particular what does it report as overall battery condition as well as the Design Capacity, Full Charge Capacity, Remaining Capacity and Cycle Count?

Hello I am using ThinkPad X220 with 9-cell battery (FRU P/N 42T4940)Yesterday, I update my system with Lenovo system Update, and the battery firmware update is the only important updates that I (try) to install. Long story short, when the program said that the sytem will automatically shuts down after the firmware update is complete, I clicked next to start the upgrade. Suddenly my system shut down right after the firmware upgrade started and when I turn it on again, it said that the firmware upgrade was failed and I need to turn my computer off. After I turn my computer on, the Power Manager said that my battery canot be charged because of poor condition from normal wear (my battery still can hold more than 85% of charge, more specifically 87%).I even tried to update it again using Windows 7 but no luck. From that on, I cannot charge my battery despite any ways that I tried (reset power gauge, take off the battery while the system turned on and charge it when it turned off, etc) Is there any solution for my problems?Anyway I am using the latest version of BIOS available (1.42 - EC 1.24)I am using UEFI booting with GRUB as main bootloader (Windows 10 and Debian 8.0) but when using Windows 7 I am using the legacy booting with GRUB as main bootloader

It may be that the battery is just failing.  There is a lot more to battery health than how much charge the cells can take,  If yours is the original battery for the machine, it has been used for a normal life.  The service manual for your machine https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/0a60739_04.pdf

shows the procedure for checking the battery with a meter on page 34, but there are orter types of failure that won't show up.

Hello, Has anyone tried installation of a sierra wireless MC7750 card on a X220 tablet? I've gotten hold of a MC7750 and intend to install it on my X220 tablet and try it with Verizon 4G network. Thanks,Anand

A:Thinkpad X220 Tablet - Installation of sierra wire...

I have not tried it, but I can tell you that most likely it will not work in the default configuration.  Lenovo machines have a whitelist that checks to see if the WWAN card inserted into the machine is regonized and certified.  If the machine doesn't recognize the card it will display an 1804 error.  Since Lenovo doesn't yet sell these cards yet, it's unlikely that this card is on their whitelist. Some people modify their BIOSes to recognize cards that Lenovo hasn't put on their list yet.  I believe you can find such moded BIOSes here: http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Removed-whitelist-removal-Lenovo-ThinkPad-x220-v1-21 or alternatively maybe in the forums in http://www.mydigitallife.info/ There may be newer versions of the BIOS in the same forum, but I haven't checked in a while. I've been waiting for months for Lenovo to support the MC7750, or another LTE card like it.  I've been told by several sales people that "it's right around the corner".  Pretty much hogwash so far.  I haven't gone the step of ordering one of these card yet hoping that Lenovo will officially support it soon.  Please post back though if you do end up moding your bios.  I'm curious to know how well it works.  Also read up on taping pin 20.  Some people say it's necessary in addition to moding the bios. Good luck.

Hi, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 and my C drive (windows drive) corrupted yesterday. I cannot get to Lenovo Recovery to restore my C drive because the C drive was totally corrupted. I use linux bootable usb to try to access my hard drive, the C drive was corrupted, no data can be read, but the Recovery Partition (Q:\) was fine. I try to re-install my Thinkpad using the same OS (Windows 7 Pro-64 Bit) using the product key inside the battery slot to see if my hard drive fails or not, but the Windows that I reinstalled was fine until now. The Recovery Partition was still there, with different Letter path (changed to D:\) and whatever inside the recovery partition was hidden but the partition was 10GB used, so I think what inside the partition was hidden. My question is:1. Can I use my Recovery Partition again to factory reset my Thinkpad?2. Can I use the Recovery Partition with the Lenovo Rescue & Recovery apps that I download from Lenovo Website? Thank you, I still need My Thinkpad X220 eventhough I already have newer Lenovo laptop. So, I've bought one of these 27" beasts (Crossover QHD) and currently I am trying to get the monitor running with a Thinkpad x220 (i7) seated in a docking station (according to its specs, it can drive two display ports up to 2560x1600).I connected the monitor by using a Display-Port DVI Dual cable. I read the instructions by Linus Torvalds (yes, personally written by him!) and followed the steps below but to no avail. Here are the commands I've tried; for finding out the exact modeline: gtf 2560 1440 60 xrandr --newmode "2560x1440_666.00" 311.83 2560 2744 3024 3488 1440 1441 1444 1490 -HSync +Vsyncxrandr --addmode HDMI1 "2560x1440_666.00"xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode "2560x1440_666.00" The monitor is turning on and it appears to be the right solution but the rendered image looks totally pixelated as you can see here: http://pbrd.co/18xd0lN What's wrong here? Hi everyone, first post here!
My laptop is currently causing me some aggravation regarding fast startup. It is a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 I have upgraded to Windows 8 and then 8.1 and an SSD and up to now has been performing flawlessly.
Recently, with the fast startup option enabled, the computer has been shutting itself off completely after the startup animation and requires the power button pressing again before it will boot up, in 'normal startup' speed.
I have tried disabling and re enabling fast startup, using the 'powercfg -h off' and 'powercfg -h on' commands to recreate the hiberfil.sys file and that's about all I can think of. It still behaves the same, turning itself off completely immediately after the startup animation.
Anyone got any ideas to resolve this?

A:Fast startup causing problems - Lenovo Thinkpad X220

Fast startup has worked a couple of times in the meantime - I swapped the wireless card yesterday and reinstalled some drivers to resolve some unrelated issues and it started working again. Yay! I thought - but after the first couple of goes it started doing the same thing again and shutting off after the animation!

I did not erase the fingerprint memory, i can use the fingerprint reader to get access to the bios. When i try to access windows and the fingerprint reader, it wil not recognise my fingerprint, i get a Lenovo pop up box, username (not able to change this) is lenovo and i have to type a password. No password i normally use wil work Bios file used : 8duj29us.iso , BIOS version: 8DET74WW (1.44) I ame able to load Lenovo Diagnostics, no hardware problems. I need some help here

He there,
I found a couple of similar threads, but I could not solve my problem yet.
Since a bought this laptop almost a year ago I have random system chrashes with a "Driver Power State Failure".
Sometimes it seems especially when I use lots of programms at the same time and always when the computer automatically goes to "sleep" or "poer save mode" (or when I close the lid).
What can I do to solve the problem or where is the problem exactly?

Kind regards
Dschi

OS: Windows 10 64bits with latest sys update in 2017Thinkvantage update: no updates needed (all latest)Driver: 2006/6/1 version from Microsoft, Lenovo drivers seems discountinued and cannot be found anywhere on its support pages (Anyone can find it? I remember it used to be a standalone driver for the bluetooth version of the compact keyboard)Tried: BIOS settings (toggle of Fn/Ctrl, Enable Lock), latest BIOS version but not working at all.Workaround: I have to press: Fn + F4 + Alt in order to close a window, which has the same effect as F4 + Alt. But can't live wiz this because it's transforming a 2 button job into a weird 3 button job.Note: This problem only occurs with all my bluetooth compact keyboards, but doesn't affect the normal FnLk functions on the USB version of Thinkpad Compact Keyboard.  The wireless keyboard is really handy except the FnLk not working that kills anyone wiz a habit of shortcuts involving Fn + keys. Plz kindly help.

Spoiler (Highlight to read)IMPORTANT!!IMPORTANT!!Friends from Lenovo,Yesterday I did the update to the new version of Windows 10, called Windows 10 Fall Creators Update or Windows 10, version 1709, and after the update was done I find out that the hotkey driver, that controls the Fn commands on the keyboard of my Lenovo ThinkPad X220, doesn`t work correctly with this new version of Windows 10. Therefore, I would like to know what can I do to fix this issue, so the hotkey commands work properly again in my notebook, or if it is going to be an update of this file (8jvu43ww.exe) that I could install in my notebook to fix this issue. Could you please tell me what can I do to make the Fn commands work properly with the new update of Windows 10 (Windows 10 Fall Creators Update) or if it is going to be an update of the hotkeys that is compatible with the new version of Windows 10?I look forward to hear your comments, and I hope you already have an idea, an answer to solve this issue. Yours truly,Cristin Palau

Intel 2nd gen CPU machines are not supported in Windows 10. 3rd gen (X230) is the first one.

Friends from Lenovo,I write you because, on August 12th, 2016, trying to install the new Windows 10 Anniversary Update, I had to do a reboot of my notebook and in the process, I lost most of the programs and drivers that use my notebook to work properly. I already installed most of the drivers I lost that day, but I still haven`t found and install the correct driver for the hotkeys of my notebook. So far, I have tried with the files r09vu09w and 8jvu43ww, but none of that files is the correct one for my ThinkPad X220 notebook, which I bought in the year 2012. Therefore, I need to ask you if you could tell me how can I get, download the CORRECT hotkey file for my notebook, so I could download it and install it on my Lenovo notebook. Friends from Lenovo, could you please tell me how can I get the correct hotkey file for my notebook Lenovo ThinkPad X220, in order to download it and install it on my notebook?THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR HELP!!!! Yours truly,Cristin Palau

Hello lovely people, recently I've been experiencing this error after I press the power button of my X220. I've been reading through some people's posts about this error and one of the topics concerning it seems to be the battery and the charger. I've tried three options: - With both charger and battery- Without battery, with charger- Without charger, with battery and the scenario is the same in all three situations. Pressing the ThinkVantage button does nothing. Multiple people discussing this error online have suggested that in this case, the issue is probably the motherboard. 1) If that's the case, what does it mean for my ThinkPad? Sorry I'm a noob - does it mean it's dead, are my data lost or can I just replace it with a new one without either of those things being threatened? 2) If it isn't the case, what are other possible reasons for this error? Should I call an IT service? Thank you sincerely for caring. All my work is inside this machine and I've developed a strong emotional attachment to it , so any responses will be greatly appreciated! Have a great day,Kyf

Hello! Yes, i know. let me pre-emp this. I am getting an out of warranty Thinkstation, ThinkCentre either Edge 71 or S20/S30 series. I am going to put in a Seasonic Fanless PSU there. And probably some Nocture case fans. Now with CPU fan, if i put an aftermarket heatsink there, with after market fan, would BIOS throw error? Anyone tried using aftermarket CPU fans in their Thinkcentre or Thinkstation? what about... just... no CPU fan? can we boot without a CPU fan, for some super heatsink/heatpipes/watercooled system? CheersNelson

My fan recently broke. So I simply jus popped another one on. The fan I replaced it with jus has red and black which is obv live and neg but the one I took out has red black and yellow any idea about the yellow ? The fan works great but CPU fan failed error keeps appearing then when I press F11 it says entering setup but still shuts down.any ideas about how to keep it running just to get into the settings and change the CPU fan settings. Would be grateful with any help. Thankyou.

A:Help needed to bypass the CPU fan failed error at startup

You bought the wrong type of fan. They aren't all the same. You should have bought a CPU fan but you have a case fan instead. The yellow wire goes to a sensor connection that controls the speed of the fan. The motherboard detects the missing connection and throws the error you saw. The solution is to buy the correct type of fan.
