Windows XP won't load on Dell Optiplex

Q: Windows XP won't load on Dell Optiplex

Computer was working fine and then it just crapped out. Running Windows XP. When I start it up, it flashes the Dell screen, and then it goes to a blank black screen with the cursor in the top left corner. If I do F12, I can bring up boot options and system diagnostics but that's all. No safe mode option. I was going to reload the operating system as there is nothing on the computer worth saving. I put the windows xp reinstall cd in and it says "Push any key to boot from cd.." and then it just hangs no matter what I push. What should my next step be, please! It's a work computer which we need to have operating if we can.

Preferred Solution: Windows XP won't load on Dell Optiplex

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows XP won't load on Dell Optiplex

From the symptoms you described, i suspect a HDD failure. Follow the below steps.
1 ) Remove the side cover and replace the HDD cable (IDE or SATA). If you don't have a spare cable, borrow the CD drive cable. This step will solve any potential connectivity problems.
2 ) Run built in System Diagnostics. Press F12 during power on and select the "diagnostics". Allow it to run a full extended test. Post the result of the test in next reply.
3 ) If Dell diagnostics didn't find any problems, download and run Seagate seatool for DOS.
Burn the ISO to a CD using Imgburn or any ISO burning app. After booting from the CD, select long test and allow it to check the full surface of the HDD. Report the output of the test displayed by seatool.
Here is an example video on how to use seatool.

I have had this Dell desktop computer for about 6 years running Win XPpro SP3, and it was running fine until my kids were playing an online game.
While they were playing the cursor from the Microsoft wireless mouse disappeared. I put in a new battery and tried pressing the tiny buttons on the bottom of the mouse and the USB stick. Still nothing.
On the screen was a long horizontal box that said Press space bar to exit, or something like that.
I don't know if it was a prompt from the game, or some kind of spyware thing, but I pressed it and it shut down the browser.
Without a cursor, and looking at my desktop icons, I figured I better restart the computer. So I used my keyboard to start Shut Down. It then started to install 8 updates. After the last one, message was "WIndows shutting down". That stayed that way for a good 1/2 hour.
That didn't seem right, so I pulled the plug out of the back so that I could restart the PC. I then hit the power button, and the Dell screen with the OptiPlex number and the BIOS revision number came on as ususal, except the horizontal bar that shows system starting did not proceed left to right. It stopped not even 1/4 of the way across the screen, and it just stays that way.
I pulled the plug out to try again - same result.
I do not have a Dell or Windows install CD or any install from USB stick, so would like to know what my options are, short of taking it in for repair.

I have a Dell Optiplex 740 Desktop. You can run and install either Windows XP Professional or Ubuntu and it works fine. It will even boot from the Dell DVD for Windows XP Pro just fine.

When You try and boot up from the Vista Business DVD, it will not even load after you "press any key to boot from cd" I have tried this with 6 different Dell Vista versions I have and just a plain old Vista Installation DVD as well.

I have loaded up Windows XP and put the Vista DVD into the drive and it started Installation there just fine. The only thing is once it restarts, the computer goes past the BIOS screen and then cannot load Vista it just restarts. So the computer just constantly restarts and restarts, etc. Will not boot anything.

If you put the Windows XP Pro disc back in and reinstall Windows XP Pro it works like a Charm.

Dell even sent me a brand new hard drive with Windows Vista already installed on it and still my computer would not even boot up but just constantly restart after the bios loaded.

So if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Hello, I own a Dell Optiplex 745, running Windows XP Professional 32-bit. The Dell System Direct isn't launching, even though it will download, it says .APPLICATION, which cannot be opened. Does anyone have a fix?

A:Dell Optiplex 745 - Windows XP Pro 32-bit Dell System direct issue.

The older versions of Dell System Detect are security risks - if you're running an antivirus program, it may be flagging and intercepting the program.  At any rate, you should NOT be using Windows XP online at this point, as it has seen no security updates in almost two years - you really need to upgrade to a supported version of Windows (at this point, that's a minimum of Windows 7).

Hello,I've been experiencing a very frustrating problem on my PC. Around 2 minutes after turning it on and entering the OS the screen freezes and there's nothing to do but force the PC to turn off pushing the power button.I've updated the drivers, checked all the conections and nothing. It also seems that it happens more often whenever I connect the Ethernet cable before turning it (the PC) on. I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem but I need to fix it ASAP since it is the computer I work with.
Here's a couple of screenshots of the PC characteristics (I hope you don't mind it is in Spanish):

I have a Dell Optiplex 320 with 1 GB of ran (expandable to 4). It is a Dou Core so it uses one of these 2 chips:

IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 800MHz FSB Socket T with Dual Core technology XD, EM64T, 2x1MB L2 cache (800 series)
Will it run Windows 10. Does it support these:
PAE gives 32-bit processors the ability to use more than 4 GB of physical memory on capable versions of Windows, and is a prerequisite for NX.
NX helps your processor guard the PC from attacks by malicious software.
SSE2 is a standard instruction set on processors that is increasingly used by third-party apps and drivers.
If it would support those functions, with only 1 GB would it be too slow?

Hey guys!
Is it possible to install Windows 7 on this machine?
My dad found a Optiplex GX280 lying around somewhere.
He brought it back home and I was pretty impressed by it's specs.
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)

Memory (RAM) 503 MB

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz

2773.4 MHz

Am not so sure about a graphics card,
I opened it up and it seemed like something was missing.
It doesn't really matter now.

I will use this computer as a secondary in my home,
Am going to set it for my dad,
So he won't use mines anymore.

Am having second thoughts about installing Windows 7 on this machine because of it's low RAM and it's older chipset.

If I do install Win7 on this machine,
Am going to remove all the eye candy from it so it won't rely as much on it's graphics.

I also posted this almost exact post here:
Dell Optiplex GX 280
(Since the author of that post also talked about the same machine)

The reason I want to install Windows 7 on this computer is because of HomeGroup.
I have a lot of files on my main computer that I might need in the future.
So in a long shot, I just want to sync up both computer in my network.

Should I go for it?

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit).
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.

Windows 7 System Requirements

Like you said, the RAM would be the an issue.
I would bump it up to at least 1GB..

Drivers for Windows 7 might also be an issue, Check with Dell Support Page for the model an see if they have any drivers for Windows 7.

You need a graphics card/device that supports at least DirectX9 in additon WDDM (Started when Vista came out)

Research before installing!!

If you have the Windows XP disk than I would maybe try it out (I say maybe because if it was me I would just accept XP but that does not mean it can't be done.)

If anything goes wrong or you can't find drivers that Windows 7 will accept than you can always re-install XP. (If you have the disk)

Although HomeGroup is a cool feature you can share a folder or even a drive in XP, or buy a network storage unit. That way any computers in your network can have access to files and folders

In the end all the specs are there if you bump the RAM to 1GB, just don't expect it to be fast.

Hope this Helps, and Happy Holidays!

Recently our Dell Optiplex 330 experienced some pretty severe virus attacks that render the computer useless. The user had disabled the installed protect advising that it slowed his performance and would not let him install cute little things from his favorite social network. The machine was so hosed it was determined the best course of action was to reformat the drive and basically start over. The problem is this unit was sold to us by Dell with a license for Windows Vista Business which we request it be down graded to XP service pack 3. Each time we attempt to reinstall windows xp from teh provided original disc we get the famous blue screen advising there is a problem with the hard drive, etc. How can we reinstall the our favorite XP? The unit has a SATA hard drive. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I bought recently a re-furbished Dell Optiplex 760. I installed an SSD for the boot drive and tried to install Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (the OEM CD). The install ran smoothly up to a certain point and then did nothing. I repeated the installation with the 32-bit version and this completed successfully. The point at which the 64-bit install failed appears to be when the installation process tests the video performance, suggesting a problem with the 64-bit versions's graphics-card driver. The successful install revealed the graphics card (on-board chip, in fact) to be the Intel Q45/Q43 Express chipset. Has anyone had a similar experience and dealt successfully with the problem ?

A:Windows 8.1 I have Dell Optiplex 780. How to connect to HDTV?

Hi TarquinThyroid, and welcome to TSG.

I am unable to find any information on Dell Optimex computers. Do you perhaps have a Dell Optiplex 780 computer?

If so, a simple passive Display Port to HDMI cable will not work for you. That type of cable only works with devices that have a dual mode Display Port (DP++) output. Per the following page on a Dell forum, Optiplex computers do not support DP++ outputs. You would need a powered Display Port to HDMI adapter or active cable to make the conversion.

Do you have a basic passive Display Port to HDMI cable or an active Display Port to HDMI converter cable?

The 9 pin connector on your computer is most likely a serial port. If it is an Optiplex 780, there should also be a 15 pin VGA female connector on the back. That should work with a suitable VGA cable to connect to the VGA port on the TV.

I am using MDT 2013.  I've imported the driver pack for the OptiPlex 3040 from Dell for Windows 7 x64.  After MDT installs the OS, it reboots into Windows to begin initialization but it never finishes.  Instead it reboots again and goes into the Dell Diagnostics utility and runs a test on memory.
After the test runs, it tries to boot into Windows and I end up selecting "last know good config."  It finally loads windows but then none of the USB ports work.  I have to remote into the pc to manually install the USB and chipset drivers to finish the MDT deployment process.  This has happened on multiple machines and is a repeatable process.  Is anyone else having this issue?

Did you either manage to resolve this issue? Or did you always have to go through last good config?
I'm trying to get Windows 7 x86 to install on both a OptiPlex 3040 and a Latitude E5570 with no joy. The previous models were fine.

I am trying to create a windows 7 image to the new PC's that we have just purchased. On boot after pxe network boot I get the message "Please add the network driver to the windows PE image on Windows Deployment Services." I have added many drivers to WDS with no luck and the correct one from the dell website errors and will not let me added it. I have the packaged the drivers into the install.wim and boot.wim using the AIK but still no luck. The drivers from the dell website do not seem to work in the PE environment. I'm hoping that someone has done this before and can point me to the correct driver. I have been looking for the best part of two weeks and i'm sure it can't be this hard.
Thanks in advance!

Upgraded an old Optiplex 390 to Windows 10 Pro.  More accurate is purchased this computer second hand, and someone upgraded to windows 10 pro.  However, it had critical error every time it booted.  So reloaded Windows 10 Pro, and it works correctly.  However, can not get the ethernet to work.  I've tried disabling (then enable), tried deleting & rebooting, tried downloading drivers from internet.  But nothing.  It's using a Realtek.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

A:Dell Optiplex 390 - Running Windows 10 Pro - Network Issue

Unfortunately, Windows 10 is not supported by Dell on this system. This means that Dell has not created any Windows 10 drivers for the hardware.  If no Windows 10 drivers are installed the hardware may not work properly.

I decided to upgrade my computer from a Dell Optiplex 745 to a dell Optiplex 755. I took the hard drive out of the dell optiplex 745 and installed on the Dell Optiplex 755. When I powered on the Dell Optiplex 755, it boot into BSOD. I decided to do a repair installation. The repair installation error occurred while trying to install components. I have uploaded an image to give you better explanation of the error message.

Happened during Xp Repair installation

A:"NEED HELP" Problem with Windows XP setup repair on Dell Optiplex 755

You have changed the hard drive from one system to another...that's not supposed to be done, since the drivers/settings and Windows license for System A...do not necessarily relate at all to System B.

After much hesitation I finally decided to "upgrade" my system to Windows 10 after much Microsoft nagging.
However, after this upgrade I no longer see anything of the regular Dell services that check my computer for optimal performances. I have another year or so of support but when I tried to log in I did find one service question I got answered some months ago which basically verifies my account and at least the 9020 (I also have an older registered Latitude 6400 desktop) but no way to know how to get back to my original status. In fact I received an email saying "Thanks for creating your Dell account" (in Dutch) which only seems to indicate that something is terribly wrong.

What must I do? Try and reverse my upgrade to Windows 10 and move back to Windows 8.1 ???
I went to the place where I supposedly could download the factory installed software for my optiplex 9020 but somehow I never got beyond the stage of trying to update my password. No matter what I typed in,the screen came back with the same fill-in bit to change one's password. After half a dozen different tries I gave up.

But I do want my link to Dell back, I loved the regular checkups of my system that now seem eliminated by upgrading to Windows 10. Please help???

A:Dell Optiplex 755 dt drivers on windows 10 after clean installation

The 10 year old Optiplex 755 series was never validated or tested by Dell for Windows 10. Which is why the Optiplex 755 driver page only list XP and Vista.

We ordered and received 4 new OptiPlex 7440 AIO All-in-One computers without Windows installed - only Ubantu is installed.  The desktops do not have a built-in optical drive.  I get the following error message when I try to install Windows 7: "A required CD\DVD drive device driver is missing.”  I tried using an external optical drive and USB boot device to install.  I am also plugged into the USB 2.0 ports and not the USB 3.0.  I tried many of the suggestions Google has provided me, but none of them are working.  I'd appreciate any help.
FYI, I called Dell Support twice about this issue.  The first technician hung up on me when he realized he didn't know what to do to help and the second technician said I had to pay $89 for help.  When I asked to speak to her supervisor, she hung up on me. Since Dell likes to rudely hang up on their loyal customers, I'm hoping the community will be more helpful.

I have Dell Optiplex GX260 system. I intalled Windows 7 Ultimate on that. The resolution of screen is fine but it is not supporting 1280 x 1024 resolution and videos are not playing properly. It was not taking audio drivers as well but when I ran the SoundMax drivers for XP in compatibility mode they were installed. But display drivers are not getting installed. I even tried the various driver from Nvidia for XP/Vista/Win 7, but none of them works. Even tried the latets 191 release but no use.
Someone please help me. Suggest me some driver.

I own a Dell Optiplex GX270 and I recently upgraded it from Windows XP to Windows 7 Ultimate. The problem is, everything on the screen is way too big, and I am not able to change the screen resolution. I am currently looking for a driver that I am able to use with this computer. I have tried going into BIOS setup and changed Integrated Devices (LegacySelect Options) and changed the Onboard Video Buffer from 1mb to 8mb, but that didn't work either.
System Specs:
2GB Ram
40GB Hard Drive

P.S I know on my profile it says I have an acer and that my computer is a laptop but this GX270 is a computer that I am selling.

A:Dell Optiplex GX270 Windows 7 Graphics Driver

Sounds like there is no graphics driver loaded. Is there a graphics driver in Windows Update?
