Lenovo Z51 - Which Hard Drive Caddy would work to replace DVD Drive?

Q: Lenovo Z51 - Which Hard Drive Caddy would work to replace DVD Drive?

Just bought a new z51 last month and I'd like to replace my Disc drive with a hard drive but I'm not sure which Caddy to get. There are several on Amazon for pretty cheap. Anyone successfully do this? Thanks! Phen

Preferred Solution: Lenovo Z51 - Which Hard Drive Caddy would work to replace DVD Drive?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Any updates? Did it work? I got a 'universal' caddy, but it does not get detected on my Z51. Works on my hp though.

I bought myself a SATA caddy to replace the optical drive on my Lenovo Z51-70, with a 2.5" SATA Drive. The caddy and the hard drive work, as tested on another HP Laptop. But on my Z51-70, the Hard drive is not detected, either in BIOS, or within Windows itself. I checked the Device Manager and Disk Management, but it is not visible anywhere like it is on my HP Laptop. Any and all help and suggestions will be appreciated!I desperately need this to work! Please Help!

My external hard drive went bad. I would like to replace it in its caddy, which I like. But I notice when I took the HD out of the caddy, that there are no actual connections. There is a metal area on the side of the hard drive which I presume is a contact. I don't recall seeing this "contact" on other hard drives.
Do all hard drives have such a contact? How do I know if the HD I buy will operate when I install it in the caddy?
Many thanks for advice or links.

Hi, I have a Lenovo G500 with two disk:  SDD with Windows and Linux, and a second HDD with Windows user documents and linux home folder mounted in a caddy.  After 2 months of mounting it, the HDD mounted on the caddy starts giving this error until it stops working. I have changed 3 caddy with the same problem. Can you help me find a solution? Is it a problem of bad caddy electronics? Thanks.

I appear to have a corrupt C Drive, the Lenovo test came back with storage device test failure. This makes sense to me, as I have had nothing but problems with this PC from day one, I had to re-install Windows 10 about 5 times...
It came with Windows 8 originally.
So I guess I need to get a new hard-drive. I remember doing something like this about 15 years ago, where it was just taking something out of a slot and putting something else in instead, but I guess times have changed! What do I need to do, and will this affect being able to install the operating system etc?
Many thanks for any help....

A:Lenovo H50: Options for replacing a failed hard drive (HDD, SSD, caddy, SSHD)

This maybe be an opportunity (as they say, to turn lemons into lemonade.)  Probably the one best thing you can do to add performance to your system (providing your storage requirements aren't extreme), is to replace your HDD with a SSD.
Cable connections are the same as your failed, existing HDD (SATA3 6.0Gb/s data and SATA power), and depending on the physical size of the HDD (probably 3.5" from the specs), you will need a 2.5" to 3.5" caddy.
Best SSDs: Q1 2017
Or, as a direct physical replacement, a 3.5" SSHD would be a good upgrade over a standard HDD (I'd avoid any 5400 rpm drives.)

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as

Unfortunately my hard drive failed when I was out of town and had to have my family take it in. I had backup files I created with the spotmau program that had both the C and D drive letters. I now only have a C drive listed and am unsure what to do. I am not very experienced with the deep end of the partion stuff. I have been using the laptop for a month now and have transfered as much of the fileinfo that they were able to save. I don,t want to do a restore if it will mess up what I have now but I am concerned that I will not be able to save properly for recovery later. I am trying to get to a point that I can create a hd image to save for the next crisis. I have a 320GB HD in the Laptop and a 500GB external drive That I would like to create the image on and then set to the side for that day when I have to restore to a new HD again. I am looking for some guidance so that I will have the ability to do this stuff myself. The HD hardware is not reliable as you folks probably already know. Even with the warranty it still costs alot of money. Thanks in advance for your help. Beryla

I'm helping out a friend to try and recover data from her crashed computer. i have a USB / IDE caddy, have removed the hard drive and plugged in - having removed the jumper from the back panel as advised (in fact I've also tried it plugged into the slave part).

I connect up, the blue light comes on on the caddy - I have seen drive letter H assigned to it in disk management but can not see the drive assigned within my computer so cannot access the drive. So it's as if the drive is seen *somewhere* on the pc but not in a way that I can access it or download the data from.

As I have already done this for my own pc (connected a hard drive and downloaded all data) I know that I CAN do it but not on this hard drive for some reason.

I've even downloaded tweak ui in case a drive letter wasn't able to be seen but that doesn't help either.

When I connect the hard drive the whole pc slows down as well - so it is seen somewhere by this pc.

Any thoughts much appreciated!

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

I have a Seagate Freeagent 250gb external hard drive for my laptop. Recently (after a friend stood on it) the USB jack has been pushed inside the casing. I went to a repair place but they said theyll charge about 100 pounds to resolder the jack. So I'm looking into buying a caddy off ebay, removing the hard drive from the seagate casing, and accessing it that way.

The thing is, I know absolutely nothing about the process..are all caddies universal to work with all types of hard drives? Have seagate encrypted their hard drives to only work in their casing?

These are probably very stupid questions but I know very little about hardware. any help will be greatly appreciated. also, please dont be too technical in your answers, treat me like a baby.

Win7 Home Premium and HP Pavillion DV6-2150US.  Hard drive failed.  I purchased a Seagate 500gb replacement (original drive was 250gb) and used my purchased HP re-install DVD's to re-build Windows and re-install the OEM software on the new hard drive.   Everything boots fine but it will not process Windows updates (.e. there is a big red X on the windows update screen).  I have tried the Microsoft "Mr Fix it" download ---but it errors out and none of the other Microsoft suggestions work either.  When I was lucky enough to speak with a MS tech support person, she suggested that somehow the windows on the new hard drive may not be genuine, etc...  Even though windows on the new hard drive states that its activated and genuine...is there some sort of check to a hard drive serial number to "really" activate windows?  Just to ensure that my re-install was not corrupted, I erased the new hard drive and started all over....I have the same exact result...it boots fine, but will not update via windows updates.  The only other change to the laptop was that I had best buy double the memory to 8 from 4 when I purchased it 2 years ago...again, not sure if there is some sort of hardware change limitation prior to invalidating the windows software. Please help!  I am truly stuck.  Thx JimmyC

Thanks for your post...I solved my problem by installing the update Intel rapid storage driver per this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02219204 I guess as long as the hard drive is less than 250Gig you don't need the new driver.  But when I replaced my failed hard drive with a 500gig hard drive--when I did the HP restore of Win7 and the OEM software from the dvd's I purchased--it put the original storage driver back into Win7---which works fine with a 250 gig drive but causes windows update to not work for drives greater than 250gig.   When I installed the driver file from the above link, Windows update started working--and you can imagine there were many, many patches since my PC was now restored to original Win7---not even Win 7 SP1.  Hopefully this will help someone else...thank you for your post.  JimmyC

I recently installed a fresh Windows 10 Home on my laptop. I was having some problems and so I made a post on this forum. That post can be seen following this link: Factory reset laptop that has had an upgrade to SSD by cloning old HD
That has been solved in a weird way. Basically I had to remove my secondary HD which I had in a caddy connecting where my CD drive used to be.

Now I am having a problem with the secondary hard drive. If I leave it out then I can boot the computer and everything works fine. When I insert the caddy (by shutting down the computer first, of course) and then boot the computer, it gets stuck on a loading screen with the small Windows logo and swirling loading dots on a black background. It stays like that until the computer eventually decides to sleep. Something like 30 minutes.

In the bios both of the hard drives are registered and I can see them in the boot options.

I have also tried to connect the hard drive which is in the caddy to the computer using an external enclosure and then it shows one of the partition as being something like 30GB (should be around 300GB) and the other partition shows up but is unreachable.

I am clueless as to why this is happening.

Hi all,
I have a Tecra W50 PT640A-04103NN1.
When a second hard-drive is installed in the DVD drive bay the laptop will try to boot of the bay disk, not the internal disk
This seond disk has no operating system installed and so the boot fails.

If I hit F12 at boot time and select HDD, then the machine boots correctly. I.e. boots from the main hard drive.
Changing the boot order in the BIOS does make any difference; it will always try to boot from the second, drive bay disk first.

Has any been able to get this to work properly?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Doppelfrog,
I've got same problem with my W50, got my HDD caddy couple of days ago.

I believe the Bios for this laptop is not developed to serve two drives (as the computer got only one drive bay) and it's not possible to prioritize witch HDD should boot first...

You do not need a hard drive carrier or caddy for the XPS 8920. The hard drive cage can be removed and you install the hard drive into the cage with screws. See the service manual.

I have a Laptop running Win98 1st. Ed. It's on it's 2nd hard drive. The first was a IBM Travelstar (model# DKLA-24320). It was replaced when the Stone Monkey Virus made it impossible to access the dirve.

Now I am looking for what I think is called an external hard drive caddy or enclosure. I would like to place the old hard drive in the external caddy or enclosure. The caddy or enclosure would have to be either Parallel, USB or PCMICA adaptable. I am hoping to then be able to access the old hard drive that way.

Is there such a Caddy or enclosure, does it go by any other name? If there is such a device please tell me the proper name and where I can find them.

I'd also like to know whether, this sounds like a possible way to access an old laptop hard drive?

A:laptop Hard Drive External Caddy or Enclosure

You can pick up USB external disk cases for peanuts for 2.5" disks. I use them for traveling storage. Here's one typical example: http://www.imagestore.us/product.asp?pf_id=HY-2.5case&dept_id=04-005

Note that you may need a cheap +5V adapter to use this case, you can buy them in the $20 range with the supply included. www.pricewatch.com is your friend.

So I managed to get my hands on a Precision M6500. Problem is it does not have any Hard Drives or Hard Drive caddies in it. I want to install 2 Hard drives in this machine.
My problem is I'm unable to locate the Part Number for the Primary HD Caddy, Secondary HD Caddy and its interposer. I can find this information for the M6400, but not for the M6500.
Can anyone confirm the M6400 Caddies and Interposer will or will not work in the M6500? Because I know what to purchase for M6400, but not for M6500 since like I said I can't find the part numbers for the latter. If they are the same between the two laptops then I know what to get.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
