Q: Insert the 'Dell Support Center (Support Software)' disk

Started about a month ago - pops up over and over and over and over - about every five minutes or less. I've got a Dell Studio XPS with Windows 7 Professional. Another forum said to just uninstall Dell Support Center (Support Center Software) - but when I try to uninstall it - THE SAME STUPID WINDOW POPS UP ASKING ME TO INSERT THE SOFTWARE. I tried doing a Browse and it's looking for DSC20.msi. I haven't managed to find it yet. I have at least found \Program Files(x86)\Dell Support Center but there's so many sub-directories...
I shouldn't have to be jumping through so many hoops just to uninstall a program. This is driving me crazy and I haven't found an answer online yet.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

can't access help and support from start menu or browser and receive error message (windows can not open help and support because a system service is not running. to fix this problem, start the service named "help and support'). i tried using my dimension resourse cd to no end. what am i missing ?

I have a DELL Studio XPS 1640 Laptop running Windows 7 - 64 bits. I am using Firefox instead of Explorer. I cannot run DELL Support Center because it looks for IE and I am not using this software. Anyone know how to fix this problem.

Disabling Services does nothing to conserve energy unless you have a ruwaway Process that is hogging your CPU which requires troubleshooting in other ways.

You should keep Win7 fully updated for best security and performance. Optional Updates will help keep your drivers current and can also be trusted and useful.

Use the Win7 firewall with a free lightweight AV like Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast 6.

Somehow, dell support software was deleted from my Dell 570 Inspiron Windows 7 software. I have tried several times to download but keep getting error messages that there is no software. An issue was found and corrected in the AppUpdater rule set yesterday.  Please download and run http://content.dellsupportcenter.com/updates/aulauncher.exe to have the correct version of the application downloaded and installed on your system.  Direct links cannot be provided to the full installer since different platforms and operating system architectures require different installers.

Every time I try to use my Dell Support Center to run a scan I get the message error try again later. I have been using this avenue to scan my computer since 2007 and I have never had trouble accessing it until a month ago.

I got tired of Dell Support Center slowing down my computer and tried to uninstall it. Didn't let me at first. Tried to get to bleepingcomputer.com to see if it had a solution. Got Page not found message. Got to a web page that had bleeping as a link. Got Page not found message.In a command window did nslookup bleepingcomputer.com. Got a not found message. Did nslookup google.com., IP address was returned.Located the Dell Support Center process in Task Manager and clicked End, process stopped, was then able to uninstall Dell Support Center. Did another nslookup of bleeping, got a proper answer. Entered it in URL and got to Bleeping.So, is Dell Support Center blocking access to Bleeping? If so, is it blocking access to anything else?If you want to stop Dell Support Center (this is 2.01 IIR) look for sprtcmd.exe in Task Manager and kill it.

The BSOD error message in its entirety would be a good thing and one thought on this and this might solve the problem quicker, since Dell tech support told you to upgrade to the new help center and it went south I am only suggesting this because I have worked in tech support before (not with Dell) I would contact Dell tech support and have the BSOD error message ready for them. The tech support usually has all or most of the solutions for their software handy right there in thier database, and this will solve the problem a lot faster than here.

A few weeks ago I did two updates - one was the Dell Support Center update and the other was an update entitled KB951978. Since then, I'm unable to shut down my computer - I get an error message asking me to end "sprtcmd.exe". I hit "end now", and usually it shuts down OK. In addition, it's taking much longer for web pages to load and applications to run.

I'm scared to uninstall the updates - is it safe to do that? Everything was perfectly fine until then. I saw the other thread with tips on how to do it.

My question is: do I uninstall the Dell Support Center UPDATE or the entire thing itself? I'm afraid to get rid of it altogether.

Also, should I try uninstalling the KB951978 update? I have no idea or comfort level with what that is.

... there is no option to download & install a new BIOS via HP Support Assistant, it does not even mention it. I'm a bit unsure if to proceed now - heard that wrong BIOS updates can be fatal. When I first got my computer I removed the startup entry for Dell Support Center using CrapCleaner...and it didnt start up when I booted up my computer...however, ever since three days ago, Dell Support Center kept popping up even though I repeatedly remove its startup entry...what could be causing this problem? Actually you may want to run Startup Control Panel and remove any other not required startup program as well

i currently have a dell Inspiron 5558 laptop for over an year now but the screen stop working over 6 months ago, i looked up the warranty information at the time of screen stopped working and was re-assured that it showed February 18, 2017 therefore i did not consider that it is very urgent to call tech support since i have other laptops. today when i call the support service, i was informed that product was not registered and i have to pay $233 to replace the LCD screen, they still argued that dell warranty website showed the correct information but when i looked it up, the website still displays the same.  did anyone else encounter this issue??

We are Dell resellers and had placed an order for 43 Laptops - Dell Latitude 3560 with Dell on 13th June, 2016. We delivered them to our customer on Friday 17th June, 2016. On Monday 20th June we discovered that all the Laptops are faulty and are not functioning properly. They have not been able to use a single system due to touchpad issues in the entire lot
We have made innumerable calls Dell to resolve the problem, but the team is unable to identify and rectify the problem. 
We have spoken to our partner account manager, regional account manager, Service Specialist and Escalation Team, requesting them to provide us with a solution at the earliest as their work is getting hampered. Our customer has to deploy the same by 1st July however they do not have any Dell Laptops functioning correctly.  
How do we escalate this to the Dell management and get a replacement ASAP

I am very concerned. My laptop is consistently taking forever to start and/or freezing. Is it possible to uninstall anything dell related? Or how do I fix it? A:Dell Foundation Services and Dell Support Software Crashing Laptop

I am no expert here, but it looks like the Update service is looking for a Recovery partition which may hold the WinRE tools.  On my current system, that would be partition 4 but it could be different on yours.  Running the command below in an administrative command prompt should show what partition is configured for the Tools.

Have you made any changes to your drive configuration?  The reagentc info should show the same partition the Update Utility is looking for.

Does the final RTM Windows 7 support SOFTWARE RAID-1 (dynamic disk mirroring)? I know it supports fake-raid and hardware raid but I want to use software raid because my disks are of different size. I don't want to try it myself since I would have to convert my disks to dynamic.
Windows Vista didn't support it. XP had it disabled but could be hacked. It was enabled in Windows server 2003 (and probably others).

Dell Support "Assist" just ran without giving me an option to stop, pause, or control in anyway.  It was using nearly all computer resources (I could barely save the word document I had open at the time).  This isn't "assist" more like computer take over.

How can I control the S. "Assist"?  How can I adjust the time between it's runs (currently it looks like monthly)?  After finishing it's scan or whatever it finally closed (cuz it wouldn't close the 20 times or so I clicked the "X").  I then opened it, looking for some results of the scan, and found none.  How can I view results?

Right now, seems like worthless bloatware.

Also, there is not a [New Post] button on the Laptop Forum (at least for me).

OK.....i am on an XP operating system on a dell. everytime one of the users logs off, we get the window that says "ending program sprtcmd.exe", and then we have to go and end program manually every time we log off. i read a similar post on here where someone was having that problem, and was told it was related to the dell support center, and they were advised to uninstall it. i tried to uninstall the dell support center, and this message pops up:

"Error 1306. Another application has exclusive access to the file c:/Documents and settings\Barb\Local Settings\Application Data\Support Soft\Dell Support Center\Barb\state\ logs\sprtcmd.log.
Please shut down all other applications then click Retry"

It will not let me click retry, i have to close out the little window or hit cancel, then it goes through a little more of the "windows configuring", and then i get a little window for "add or remove programs" that says "fatal error during installation" and then that's that. it won't let me uninstall the program!
i know this isn't a major problem or anything, but still having to manually click that window everytime i log off is quite aggrivating.
any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I'm working on my Father In Laws' computer, and for some reason, we can't open his Help and Support Center. I have searched everywhere to find the right path to get to it, and no luck. It worked recently, but it's gone now. I have gone through the Services.msc looking for anything that may be disabled that would effect it, but nothing so far. Any ideas? thanks for any help.

If the key isn't there, right click and create a new key HELPCTR.EXE
It should have a value of;

C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\HelpCtr.exe

Save the settings and Reboot the computer.

When i click links, 'ex:related articles' in help and support center, error message pops up"cannot display page.Also XOX appears in place of certain words on page articles. I tried knowledge base article Q306741, but it doesn't help. The problem appears in 'help' for Wordpad,notepad,paint and others. I've searched everywhere for a solution,to no avail. Anybody!!!!

Are you on dial-up internet by any chance? Some of the links may be to internet sites and if you're not on the net at the time, you will get that error. If you right click on the link that is doing that to you, you can see the address.

If it's a file on your C drive, then you may need to repair your help files. If the file is an http: then log onto the net to continue.

I am unable to open the Help and Support Center in XP (Home)
I recently installed and ran a registry cleaner.
I am unable to restore to an earlier setting either from system restore or the registry cleaner's back-up
I have looked in microsofts KB, articles 888018 & 555329 to no avail.
The value data of the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\HELPCTR.EXE is
C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\HelpCtr.exe
which appears to be correct
I believe the program tries to run but task manager never shows it. I get no error messages at all

Any ideas?

Help and Support Center page needs help. Opens up extremely slow now that a clean install has been done. At one point the H&S Center page would not open. System restore would not work. Defragmenter could not finish all files. Restarting the computer did help. This has been happening since a complete cleanup done to erase, zero, reformat and reinstall all programs needed for normal operation... if there ever is a normal operation. These problems occurred after MS updates and .net Framework installed .NET 1, SP and 2 installed. All items working properly prior to updates and the .NET install. It wasn?t that bad erasing everything, zeroing , reformatting and putting WXP HE back on. That was a lot faster than fishing for much needed help that does not appear to be anywhere around without a substantial fee. Thank you for allowing the post.

I have a problem...First off help and support message, when clicked on would not open because it could not find helpctr.exe file in binaries. I have fixed that and started svc service but now when I click on help and support the hour glass flickers but nothing opens. It is not a registry problem because app paths are correct and svc service is started...Why isnt the center coming up on screen?

There is a service that you can disable to stop it appearing.

Start > Run type services.msc and then scroll down to Help and Support. Right click this and then go to startup type and make sure the box says Disabled. Then, simply click Stop to stop it running. Click Apply and OK to cancel all open windows

Hi,

A friend of mine has a windows XP machine - clean, no malware.

Every time he tries to open a program/file either from the programs menu or from a desktop shortcut, help and support center opens.
After clicking the icon/link a second time, the correct program/file opens.

Does anyone know a fix for this???

Help and Support Center provides a centralized facility through which
users can obtain assistance on a variety of topics. For instance, it
provides product documentation, assistance in determining hardware
compatibility, access to Windows Update, online help from Microsoft,
and other assistance.

A security vulnerability is present in the Windows XP version of Help
and Support Center, and results because a file intended only for use
by the system is instead available for use by any web page. The
purpose of the file is to enable anonymous upload of hardware
information, with the user's permission, so that Microsoft can
evaluate which devices users are not currently finding device drivers
for. This information is then used to work with hardware vendors and
device teams to improve the quality and quantity of drivers available
in Windows. By design, after attempting to upload an XML file
containing the hardware information, the system deletes it.

An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a web
page that, when opened, would call the errant function and supply the
name of an existing file or folder as the argument. The attempt to
upload the file or folder would fail, but the file nevertheless would

After updating and installing the needed .NET Framwork 1 and 2 plus the .NET SP the HSC page slowed down a lot. Sometimes the page will not open at all. Here's a page over a Kelley's Korner with half-a-dozen tricks for trying to get Help and Support happy again --- note that you'll have to scroll down quite a ways to get to the "Help and Support" category --- http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_h.htm

I think a decent quick-fix try might be to reinstall the .inf file for the Help and Support service - you might or might not need your Windows XP CD (because if you still have your XP SP2 .cabs on your hard drive - which you likely do, if you didn't manually delete them - the files needed will be right there) ---
Go to C:\Windows\inf\pchealth.inf. Right click and choose install.

If your system has a modest amount of system memory (RAM) installed, look in Task Manager (in the "Performance" tab) to see if the amount of physical memory installed isn't enough to cover what is needed by your background processes + your running applications -- this would cause your computer to have to use the page file extensively, and slow things down dramatically from time to time.

I have windows xp home edition with sp2 and when i click on help and suport center in the start menu it won't start. I started task manager and watched the processes when i clicked help and suport and it shows up there for about 10-20 seconds and then disapers. i don't know what is happening and i need help.

Hi, on an XP machine, I disabled Windows XP Help and Support Center a number of years ago (before SP2 came out) by disabling the Help and Support in services. I cannot seem to re-enable it. I have tried various 'fixes' found on the Inet but none seem to work.

I am very disappointed to know that Windows 8 Media Center would not support Blu-ray. We would need third party software for this. So officially Microsoft is not supporting the Blu-ray format. This is really a disappointment as this shows that Microsoft is somehow moving away from the PCs (desktops/laptops) and going forward with the mobile devices. And the future of desktops and laptops are doomed. As a user of desktop, a few years ago I was looking forward to the Blu-ray era after the DVD era and was hoping that Games, software etc. would would soon be available in the Blu-ray format but it seems that Microsoft has decided to abandon desktops and laptops. Now I wish if there is some alternative OS to Windows!
