Q: Internet Disconnects repeatedly

I have a Netgear Nighthawk. I noticed when someone is downloading something the random disconnects happen every 2-3 minutes. When there is no downloading occuring the interenet will cut out ever 35-45 minutes. Each disconnect will last anywhere from 5-10 seconds. So its obviously not a problem with the cables.. maybe someone with too much traffic going into the router which is causing it to give up on itself? Also when the discconnects happen it isnt only on my end. It happens to everyone using the internet.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

That does sound like a router issue
Turn off the route/modem for 15mins

switch back on and see if the problem still occurs

if it does you could try resetting the router - should be a reset option on the back of the box

Hi! I Recenetly purchsed a new Fujitsu Life Book N With a built in 802.11 Super AG Atheros Wireless card.The card connects to my network and gos online fine. It will be online for about 20 minutes then it will disconnect, then say accquring network address then reconnect and work fine. It gets very annoying when im trying to work!
None of the other computers wirelessly on the network do this, just the laptop

Hi sounds like you have a problem with either

a) Power management : Turn this off for you Wifi network card.
b) Diagnostic software : Some notebooks have diagnostic software that can interfere with the operation of the card. Find out if there is any and turn it off.

I have a Dell Latitude D620 running on Windows XP. I generally use Intel ProSet Wirless, but I have also tried to use the basic internet management which Windows provides and it doesn't seem to be doing any good.

My internet repeatedly disconnects and reconnects. Having divorced parents, I switch between houses on a regular basis and the problem is exactly the same at both houses. If I move my computer [it's a laptop] a foot or so out of place, it usually reconnects, but occasionally, that is not the case. In one house, I use my computer directly below where the linksys box is located, in the other, it's just across the hall. Regardless of where in the house I am located, though [even right next to the linksys box], the internet continues to disconnect. It will occasionally disconnect for twenty or thirty minutes at a time, either being unable to connect to the network for more than few seconds, or simply not "seeing" the network. Other computers in the house work totally fine, be they desktop or laptop, and I am entirely at a loss for what to do. I have tired restarting my computer multiple times [this problem has been going on for about two weeks] and I've tired disconnecting both the linksys and the Comcast boxes.

If anyone has input, it'd be great. I'm getting terribly fed up!

on booting up today my HP 15 updated and scanned the drivers.  However wireless connectivity is still unreliable and will disconnect within minutes... so I am using my old Dell to submit this to the board. I don' get any error messages, but do get a message that I am not connected. I have had this issue for a couple weeks so I hope it can be resolved How can I get consistent connectivity? Thank you,

The Intel AC3165 wifi adapter on my Inspiron 7559 periodically will disconnect every couple of minutes and most the time I have to go through the Disable/Enable route to get it to work.  But then, magically, it will start to work properly and will do so for several days until the problems start again.
I have the latest driver installed (18.33.0.1) and I have turned off the "allow operating system to turn off wifi" switch.  And I have played with other settings until I am blue in the face.
Furthermore, even when the adapter doesn't continually disconnect, it is totally unreliable when switching from one wifi source to another.  Sometimes the change is easy, but many times I have to reboot the computer to make it happen.  Very frustrating.

Hi there, and thanks for taking the time to help me. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section, as its more of a computer issue that affecting my internet.

Right. So my problem is that every now and then my internet will cut out for about 10 seconds. This only happens on my computer, and its not my network as i've seen it happen on my computer while talking to people on Xbox live and nothing has happened to effect my xbox's connection. I'm running windows 7 64bit. My connection to my router is wired, and not wireless.

So i've surmised that something on my computer is cutting my internet out for a few seconds, and then reconnecting. This is really quite frustraiting as im an avid online gamer and with this happening two or three times an hour, its rather hard to stay competitive.

I use Ventrilo which is a VOIP programme, and i've been talking to someone when this has happened - there is no lag, or no delay in anyone speach when it happens - im just instantly disconnected from the server, and reconnected again within 10 seconds - which again, suggests its something on my PC and nothing to do with my connection.

Sorry if i'm repeating myself abit here, im just trying to make sure you understand my reasoning for thinking its not my internet.

Try booting in Safe Mode with Networking with that wired connection and see if it happens there.

In October 2006, my pc got infected with the Trojan web.links4all.biz because I ignorantly clicked on a link in MSN Messenger. Since then, and especially since the beginning of 2007, my internet connection regularly crashes. That means I can not use any instant messenger/voip (MSN, Yahoo, Skype) or any browser (Firefox, IE). In general the crashes intensify if I have Firefox open for a longer period of time. But even without a browser open, just chatting, at some point the internet connection gets broken. The quickest way for me to restore the internet connection is to right click on the internet icon on my desktop, click on disable, wait until all the internet icons in my utility tray are disabled, then right click again and click on enable. Does anyone know what would be causing internet Explorer to start repeatedly? When I click to open it just opens over and over. Also, AOl instant messenger tries to do the same thing. This is my neighbors computer, the only thing I can tell you at this point is that it is running windows Xp. I have run spybot and adaware. I can't get to the internet to run hijackthis or any virus scans. Her Norton 2003 says there are no viruses. Any help would be appreciated.

Every few minutes I disconnect from my online programs temporarily. It starts again randomly - from 10 seconds to 10 minutes.

The diagnose & repair tool used to say something along the lines of "DNS Error: The well known host microsoft.com could not be found, it may be down", though that was until i restored my computer to factory settings. Now it just says it acknowledged the error but can't fix it, or to reset the network adapter.

I've already done a few things in CMD, like the whole flushdns combo and netsh.

I have Vista on Compaq Presario laptop. My browser is Google Chrome. I have been having repeated failures of my internet connection, which I have been unable to diagnose. The connection breaks off without warning with increasing frequency, often several times a day. The problem began when I had an old router. Several months ago I changed the router for a new one: a Netgear N300. The breaks seemed to be cured for a time and then they started again. Now they are very frequent.
Usually re-booting the router restores the connection, but not always. My phone handset is on the same phone socket, and my phone works perfectly. The problem is the same whether I use the wireless connection or the cable connection to the router. I have no understanding of the way the internet connection works, so I cannot even tell whether it is the router, the computer or the phone connection that is at fault. Allan.

I'm on a dialup connection with one phone line so I have to have turn windows automatic updates off, but I update manually. If I leave automatic updates on, it will start downloading updates at inconvenient times (like when I only intend to be online for 5 minutes to check my email and my wife needs to use the phone) and then I have to stop the updates.

So, in the past two weeks svchost.exe (located in c:\windows\system32) has been repeatedly trying to access windows update. These are some examples of what it's trying to connect to in my firewall logs:

The thing is, until two weeks ago, svchost.exe rarely tried to access Microsoft updates. I sometimes see the little update icon in the system tray. I haven't seen that there in over 2 years.

Can anyone explain why svchost.exe and wuauclt.exe (located in c:\windows\system32) have been trying to update so much in the past two weeks when they rarely tried before? You may have automatic time updates turned on. This runs as a svchost hosted process which periodically attempts to connect to an internet service to set your clock. You can turn that off by right clicking on the clock in your task bar, and select Adjust Date/Time, and click on the Internet Time tab.

cable modem hooked into WRT4GL router (which has been very stable)
security set up using Mac addressing for 3 comptuers and PS3(wireless) and PSP(wireless).

I have been runing with the above configuration for over 1 year - no problems.

I have 3 computers + PS3 + PSP. Problem computer connects wirelessly. Other 2 comptuers hooked directly to the router. I have connected the problem computer direclty to the router and the problem below is exactly the same.

problem:

After booting up the comptuer I have a good and stable internet connection and I can surf for about 5 minutes. Then, I lose the connection. For example, if I go to google.com it will not bring up that page..at the bottom it will say connecting to xx.xx.xx.xx ip address (i dont have that address - I am currently at work).

The 'view wireless connection' screen shows that I am 'connected' to my router and shows very good strength. As mentioned above when I connect directly to the router the problem is the same. Now if i shutdown and boot up again the connection is good then drops after 5 minutes.

I did make some changes to my DNS since I thought the problem was DNS related but I reversed them and really I dont understand even if I screwed up these settings why can I still connect for 5 min then get dropped ?

I did try releasing / refreshing the DNS - but that did not do anything.

I have a new Toshiba Satellite, less than a month old, running Windows 7.  I generally use Firefox as my browser, but about two weeks ago Internet Explorer randomly began popping up to msn.com, a site which is not my usual homepage, unbidden.  This occurs at unpredictable intervals, anywhere from 2-30 times a day.  I have run several different malware programs, without success.  The only unusual thing I see on my computer is "Internet Explorer Toolbar 4.9 by Sweetpacks," which I have been unable to delete, despite multiple attempts. I use Windows Firewall and Avast antiviral/antimalware. 
 
Please help--this is very annoying, interrupts serious work, and utilizes resources.

When connected to the internet at regular time intervals I get disconnected and see the following message on my screen:

"Network protocol connection results.
One or more requested network protocols did not connect successfully. TCP/IP CP connected successfully. IPX/SPX or compatible CP reported error 733: A connection to the remote computer could not be completed. You might need to adjust the protocols on this computer. Press accept to use the connection as is, or hang up to disconnect."

When I click the 'Accept' button I am able to reconnect to the internet, but after a couple of hour the same story goes on...

Hi everyone,

I am new here. I work at home for a large company via their secure website. For the past few weeks, there have been many times that I cannot get on the company's website (based in Internet Explorer). The website doesn't connect at all. During these times, I can access all other websites without any problems, so it is not a problem with my internet connectivity. The company keeps telling us that the problem is "an internet backbone routing issue" and there is nothing that they can do about it. My question is if this is really legit? Can there really be an issue that only affects my ability to access that one specific website while still being able to access all other websites without problems? I've checked my download and upload speeds through my ISP (I have a Road Runner cable connection) and they both looked good during these times. They claim that they can do nothing about this problem, but it has occured every day this week. Could it be some sort of problem on their end with their servers being overloaded or something? We are paid on production and don't get paid for downtime when their website is down. Is there anything I can do about this to prevent it from happening on my end? Thanks so much for the help!

I have a new Win10 Inspiron 355 that repeatedly loses internet connection while on wireless. The wireless icon in the system tray shows that it's still connected to the wireless network, but no internet access. The fix is to disconnect then immediately reconnect. But this gets tiresome to do every few minutes. (I did it 3 times while writing this.) I do not have McAfee or any third party firewall/security software--just Windows Defender. I had 3 other laptops and several mobile devices in the house, so I know the wireless works.
Here's what I have tried:

Run the Windows network troubleshooter
Upgraded the wireless adapter driver
Deactivated Power Management in the wireless adapter
Deleted the wireless connection, rediscovered it, and created a new connection
Did a hard reset on the wireless router
Flushed DNS, released and renewed ipconfig

Any advice appreciated.

I have a cable modem. I use a Netgear WGR614v6 wireless router. It is connected directly to one computer and through a wireless to another. A few days ago, it started dropping the internet connection. Everything on the modem is fine and if I go through the modem directly, it works. I have tried rebooting everything, upgrading the firmware, resetting the router and it is still dropping. I can get it to pick back up by doing a release/renew on the router but this isn't an acceptable solution. Last night, it was dropping about every five minutes or so.

Can you help?

My wife's Windows 8 Laptop loses internet connectivity frequently in our home. It still says connected and gives absolutely no indication that she has restricted or no access. She simply cannot access any kind of internet service.

I made sure that all of her drivers have been updated.
I changed the power settings so that the Wifi adapter cannot be shut off to save power.

We've had (have) up to 19 nodes connected to our Wifi router with absolutely no problems on any of them, including a Windows 7 and Windows Vista laptop. My wife's computer is the only one losing connection.

Hey.

Recently, my computer has begun acting up. every minute or so, it attempts to open Internet Explorer and then tells me it needs to close, citing the addon "googletoolbar2.dll" as the source of the problem.

(error message reads:

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem with an add-on and needs to close.

The following add-on was running when this problem occured:

File: googletoolbar2.dll
Company Name: Google Inc
Description: Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer

After clicking continue on this message, it gives the general IE message about it having to close, and that I may loose any unsaved data etc.)

Its actually done this every time anyone opened IE since it failed half way through installing the google version of IE7, however, as I don't use IE, this hasn't bothered me much until now.

However, the constant opening of IE automatically can't be a good thing, so if you can kill two birds with one stone that'd be really great.

A couple of weeks ago I started to notice that my internet connection was repeatedly connecting and disconnecting at about 5pm EST to 7pm EST. I am behind a wireless connection at the moment. I notice this because I do quite a bit of gaming, and keep getting booted off the servers. I know it's an internet connection because when I get booted off my servers, for a minute or two even my internet browser won't work. This only appears to happen from this same time frame, and on a daily basis. I have attempted to google the solution, and found references to ISP. Unfortunately I am not much of a computer know-how. All I know how to do for this case is buy a new router. I would much rather fix this without spending money however, especially as I do not know if that would even fix this. Unplugging the router for 30 seconds is the only solution I have found so far for this issue.

hi Boltonsquad I have a similar sounding problem.
My connection to the network is reported as excellent but randomly the actual download speed drops away to nothing.
Does yours "mend " itself after a short while and start working again...or is yours off for good. I find rebooting the laptop resolves it faster than waiting for it to do it itself...until it does it again(not good).
I use a belkin router (number can be supplied when I get home if needed) ..maybe thats the common?

Hi all,
I am new here and dont know a lot about computers. I have a laptop with an aolynk router and a 3com wireless system. I have no pc just 2 laptops hooked up to my internet.
The internet works fine but disconnects every now and then. There is no pattern i can see (ie.every hour or every 10 mins etc) it justs disconnects but saying limited or no connectivity.If I click repair it doesnt work i have to disconnect both the router and the wireless modems to get it back on.
Can someone offer me any advice please.

It seems that every three or four hours our computer will just lose all connection, even the modem shows we don't have one. We have had four cox repairmen come, and all claimed they had fixed a simple problem. They didn't. So whenever this happens all we can do is wait or repeatedly unplug and plug stuff. Obviously we have no clue what is going one. Can somebody help.

I am having an issue with frequent media disconnects. Upon booting my system, browsers do not connect to the internet. A restart fixes the problem for a while and the system eventually disconnects again. I have hardwired cable and supplier provided cable modem. The system says I am connected but browsers don't function until a soft restart. My PC is for personal use and is owned by me. I have recently added Spybot AV and previously used Windows Defender. McAfee in the distant past. None of them show much and if they do and the item is fixed, I still experience the same media disconnects.

Hello everyone, I'm running a windows 7 operating system and I need help I've been having this issue for a few weeks. Usually when I download something big or stream my internet on my PC specifically will go out and I cannot get it back unless I restart my pc I have tried ipconfig/renew and I get the unable to contact DHCP.

Now saying that, I have tried other methods that don't work at all however my wifi works perfectly on my phone and other devices in the household and it is only my pc. I am connected via Ethernet as well but I also sometimes use a wireless adapter however have not experienced the internet go out using the adapter but for network adapter I have updated drivers, tried different ports as well as using different cables and none of those have helped I've looked up many solutions and none seem to work please help thanks

I should also mention the ethernet port on my pc is burnt out because of a thunder storm so I am using a USB to ethernet adapter

I have verizon dsl. I open internet explorer, surf for about 15 minutes and all of a sudden i lose my connection. I try to log back on but it will not let me. I reboot and I can get back on for another 15 minutes and it disconects again. I unplugged my modem this time and plugged it back in and I was able to get back on the internet. Any ideas what this could be?

I have Verizon DSL also, I was receiving the Pop up ballon: An network cable has been unplugged about every hour.

I would need to physically reseat the ethernet cable, (are you using an ethernet connection or a USB connection?), finally I purchased a new ethernet cable and that problem went away.

I did call Verizon, they have a free upgrade from 1.5mb/368kbps to 3.0mb/768kbps, it was offered to me without my asking.

Have you tried an ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew from a command window?

Start > Run
key in:
cmd /k ipconfig
Click: Enter
The information appearing will show you what your IP address is, and how long before it expires.
My IP address renews itself every 15 minutes.

At a command prompt in the same command window key in:
ipconfig/release
Enter
Then key in:
ipconfig/renew
Enter
Your IP address should be renewed.

Have you had any viruses that may have corrupted your Winsock?

Let us know if this makes a difference or not, and if you don't have the upgrade yet, call Verizon and get it!

So heres the deal.
Ive recently upgraded from windows XP 32 bit to Windows 7 64bit, this ofcourse means Ive formatted my harddrives and made a clean install.
But now Ive realised, that whenever I try to download a large file which takes several minutes, my computer will disconnect from the router and I have to let windows do its thing and it says its "Resetting Network card" After this I have to reboot the PC and yet again let windows do its thing where it tells me to let it reactivate my network card. When Ive done this Ill be connected to the internet again. Ive tried to let my PC run for several hours just to make sure its not random dc's but within 5 mins of me starting a download it dc's. I can browse around just fine and have tried countless of different solutions around the web and none have helped so far. Now I beg you to give me Every single possible solution that you guys can think of. Keep in mind that I have another PC running vista connected to the router and that one works just fine, and I never had this problem on XP.
Also please keep in mind that Im not all that techie when it comes to router settings and such, so keep it simple for the sake of my brain not overheating!

Sounds like a network driver problem but I don't see any network driver downloads fro Windows 7 X86 or X64 on the ASUS site for the Gigabit network device.

As a test, remove the router from the setup and connect directly to the broadband modem. Try a download and see what happens. If it fails the same way then the router is definitely involved. If it doesn't fail then try swapping the port and cable the router is connected to with the one currently in use by the Vista computer then try the test again.

If it works then it is either the Ethernet cable or some problem with that specific port on the router. If it doesn't make any difference, then try deleting the Gigabit network device from Device Manager as follows:

Press WinKey+R to open a Run box.
Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter
Expand Network Adapters
Right click on the Gigabit device and select Uninstall
Reboot and wait while Windows 7 rediscovers the device and reloads the driver, see if that helps.

My internet randomly disconnects for half a second. For instance, most of the time I have ventrilo and mIRC open, and sometimes (a lot of the time) an online game (TF2, CS etc) My internet will disconnect me from all of them at the same time, then I try to get back it and it lets me, so it seems its only disconnecting for like 1 second, then its back on.

I have a problem of being disconnected from the Internet. It usually occurs about the same time at night. I connect, then get kicked off after about a minute. This happens repeatedly. This continues for anywhere from a few minutes to an hour before I can stay connected again. I use IE browser. This does not happen during idle times. It happens when I am actively surfing. Any ideas on how to solve this? My ISP is no help.

For as long as I remember my Lenovo G580 would randomly stop recieving an internet connection from my wifi, leaving it still connected but without the ability to go online. I have been solving this problem by disconnecting and recconecting from the wifi, however this has been a temporary solution as the problem keeps coming back. I know this is a problem with the computer because it never happens with the other lenovo laptops in the house nor the phones connected to the same wifi. Im monitering this post so if you reply expect a response very soonThank you for the help

You may try unchecking power saving features on WLAN properties under device manager and likewise place any similar roaming aggressiveness / tendency to highest .

When I turn on the Internet (I have a modem), it works fine until I turn other programs on then the Internet basically turns off, but the computer says I'm still connected to the Internet. Why is this doing this and why is the Internet turning off?

If I'm downloading something off the Internet say a game demo or a game update the Internet would just turn off like I said before and then I would have to disconnect and then reconnect and try redownloading and sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't.

I found a pattern or it's just coincidence, but when the downloading box isn't the main thing selected for a while the Internet turns off. Someone please help and don't tell me to ask my ISP he's the other word for donkey.

Hi All
I have been having internet disconnects every since I have had VISTA. It is the same that used to occur in WIN ME & 98. It happens when you spend a long time surfing on one web site. There was a fix for this problem then and I have forgotten it. It is not my server as I have another computer with WIN 98SE and it does not happen. I have to cycle my DSL modem off & on to reconnect. I am connected through a router to a second computer and to the modem and the second computer stays connected. The internet icon (lower right display) will indicate local only is connected.
Any help would be great. Forum

If you're using a laptop or server, the network card may be configured to go into power saving mode releasing the IP address after a set amount of time of non-activity.

Which version of Windows Vista are you using? Vista is known to have plenty of networking issues on it's own so it may be worth searching Microsoft's KB (Knowledge Base) at www.microsoft.com if you're familiar with it.

Also your computer system mentions a Dell E-520 which appears to be a standard desktop PC, would you be able to confirm this?

Finally, if you could post the results of an "ipconfig /all" while the network is connected and then when it becomes unavailable, this would help troubleshoot the problem.

Hello, I just got a new computer and I'm having internet problems. I used to use an old XP desktop with direct connection and it stayed connected, used my vista laptop with direct connection and it stayed connected, and now with my new W7 desktop the internet does not stay connected. It just disconnects and reconnects in a split second. This interferes while I'm playing games (3 different games), it'll tell me I have lost connection, and when I check my internet connection it says I'm connected. Sometimes I see the little internet connection icon on the bottom say X then a little loading circle then back online in a second. It interferes when I'm streaming also. It happens every 10-30 min or so and it gets REALLY annoying. Anybody have similar problems? Any way to fix?

I suspect there may be incompatibility issues between your games and Windows 7. Can you run the games in Compatibility Mode for Windows XP SP3?

Hi there guys. I've have had some great help from all you guys here and I need your help again.
So my internet recently has been acting weird, not for just one laptop, but for all of them, The only thing that seems to not disconnect is the computer hooked up to the routers. I thought it was time for a new router so I bought two new ones to replace the old ones, so I did. They were replaced but the problem still continued! I updated the router firmware and it would fix it temporarily, but after a day it started again.
Please let me know if you need any info at all.

I sometimes leave my pc running a download all night. I usually use orbit downloader but some downloads work better with no manager. Since I reinstalled windows my connection gets disconnected at at different times and redials the connection, but only at night when I leave it downloading a large file. In internet connection I have checked "never dial a connection". It is just an annoyance but I would like to fix it. Any help will be appreciated. I forgot to say that I use IE7 and have tried connection keeper ( with same results). Tried firefox several times but it was slower than IE on my pc. Thanks again. Lots of good advice on this site.

I got my dsl modem like a month ago and its been EXCELLENT. Fast speed, never disconnects, its great. But i dont know whats hapenning now cuz every once in a while, it disconnects and i get a message that popups on the taskbar that says "a network cable has been unplugged". What i do is i either unplug and then plug one of the cables that are connected to the modem (like the phone cable or the power cable) and then it works again. What can be causin this if i am not unpluggin anything why am i gettin this message and why might it be disconnecting? Thanks in advance.

press enter
then type in ( ipconfig /release ( ^^ ^^^^^ ^^^^^ ^^
press enter
then type in ( ipconfig /renew ( ^^ ^^^^^ ^^^^^ ^^
press enter


then reboot

start
then select (run
then type in ( cmd
then type in (netsh winsock reset
press enter
now reboot your system

providing that the (os) is installed on the c drive /you drive letter may be differnt

then reboot

check your connection

Every so often when i am on the internet it disconnects and i cant open any web pages. The connection is still there in the bottom right hand corner, ip address etc. are still there but web pages wont open. I try to repair but i have to reboot to make it work again. I am using a laptop on a wireless connection, think this also may have something to do with the freezes it get occasionally.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Download HiJackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HiJackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose [Do a system scan and save a logfile].
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit [Scan] and then click on [Save log].
3. Post the HiJackThis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HiJackThis since they may be harmless.

Hey guys,

As soon as I connect my VPN it disconnects the internet. I'm using a desktop with windows 7, connected to wifi via a Netgear 4600 router. I have two internet connections, one of which is not connected to the router, both connections are affected. Used to work fine and I don't think I have done anything that would cause this. I already looked online and didn't find anything that was helpful.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

I am using CISCO Anyconnect. But regardless of what VPN, what happens is that connecting to VPN disconnects me from Internet which doesnot happen with XP.

Is there a solution for this with anyone, please.

Hi I have also been experinsing these problems. I am a video game player as well and whenever I try to play on my laptop my internet disconnects. But all my other devices that use wifi work fine. Also there is nothing wrong with my computer because it works fine on other networks such as my schools. I recently moved and am now using a different internet provider ,centerylink. I think I have to change my modem channel but centurylinks website were you change modem settings is a scam. The website does not work and my parents think theres something wrong with my computer and are refusing to change internet service providers. So I am wondering how If I can change modem channels a different way.

Hi, You might have another wifi signal very close to your house that is on 'your' channel, it happens.
You can only move your channel to one of three different frequencies, that is the lowest, the middle or the highest one. So say your current channel is 6, there is no point going to 7, it's still too close.
If the 'other' problem wifi channel near you is say '1' then you should try to go to the other end of the range.
You change your WiFi channel in your router, then your laptop will find it.
You don't need a website to do that, it's between your laptop and your router.
You make the changes through any web browser, and the details will probably be on the label of your router.
But this might not the problem, although it's a fairly easy one to 'fix' if it is.

Hi,

First welcome to TSF!!!

Next I would try a couple of things. Start off with a power cycle of your equipment, and see if that helps. Next you would need to narrow it down to what is causing the problem. Does it only happen when you are using chrome or does it happen with other browsers, more to the point does it happen with other programs that use the internet like email, instant messaging, etc. Are you running any programs that allow you to torrent, that can cause issues with your connection.
