New laptop won't play CDs or DVDs, File Explorer freezes

Q: New laptop won't play CDs or DVDs, File Explorer freezes

Got a brand new HP 15-F272 (I gather that's the model name). Decent laptop, but the integral disc drive won't play CDs or DVDs. When I put a CD in, it will start playing the first song, but after 26 seconds it stops, and then the drive shuts down after a few minutes of sitting there whirring, and it won't do anything after that; the window goes faded gray and it says "Not Responding". I tried two different media players, and both do the same thing. I tried a DVD instead and it will play the opening titles and the menu, but when you start playing the film itself, every few minutes it stops and jumps ahead like it's fast-forwarding. The sound cuts out and you see random frames from every 15 seconds until it stop again a minute or two ahead of where you were watching.
And then in either case when you go to File Explorer to open something else afterward you find the window faded and saying "Not Responding", which won't stop until you restart the laptop (at least I never tried waiting more than ten minutes to see if it cleared up). Is this a software or a hardware problem? I tried to get ahold of HP tech support but they don't seem to make it very easy to actually do that.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently bought a new laptop and when I try to play a DVD it just won't work and makes some very strange noises. I downloaded VLC player but that doesn't seem to recognise there's a DVD inserted. All that happens when I pop it in is the little DVD symbol is by the mouse for a few seconds and then it disppears and makes some weird noises, then stops. I'm hoping it's not  a problem with the drive since I only bought this laptop a few days ago! But I really don't have a clue otherwise. I have a HP 15-af165sa

Hello again tech support forums.

I recently reformatted the hard drive on my old Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. I reinstalled windows XP home and installed all of the drivers from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website that applied to the 6400 (Urgent, Recommended, and Optional)

The computer's been running fine, but when I threw a DVD into the drive it started having some serious issues. All the boring details aside, Windows Media Player threw this error:

"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card."

So I go back onto the Dell Drivers & Downloads page and re-download the Graphics Controller driver and the CD/DVD driver. I run the Graphics Controller driver and the install says it's already installed do you want to replace it? I say yes. It installs. I run the CD/DVD driver, and it throws this error:

"NEC Drive Firmware Flash Utility
Target NEC ND-6650A is not found correctly"

I don't know if this is because the driver is already installed or because something isn't right. I don't recall that error throwing on my first pass, but I can't rule it out as a possiblity.

So I still can't play the DVD and I run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to find exactly which graphics card i'm using:

Name: Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family
Manufacturer: Intel Corporation

Up until about 2 days ago my laptop was fine and then now everytime I enter a DVD the little disc shows up by my mouse to show that it's loading.. but it never actually loads. I've clicked on Windows Media Player, and it doesn't acknowledge that there's even a disc in. I've checked for updates for my disc drive, I've rebooted, I've tried different CDs/DVDs.. I just want it to work!! :(

Also, I'm running Windows 7 and have a Sony VAIO

A:Laptop will no longer play DVDs.. HELP!!

Does the drive read any disc?

Open Device Manager and uninstall the drive and restart Windows. After Windows restarts the drive will be re-installed.

If still having issues take a look at the article below.
Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

If still having issue check to see if there is a firmware update for the drive.

As a last resort before replacing the drive try a cleaning kit.

When I had Vista on this laptop (HP Pavillion dv6000), DVDs wouldn't play on occasion. Now that I've upgraded to Windows 7, however, no DVD or CD will work :S
The disc still spins whilst in the slot.
I've already tried uninstalling the DVD drivers (or atleast what I think are the drivers: everything under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers? I might be wrong) in Device Manager.
I've already deleted the Upper and Lower Filters in Registry.
I only have two disk drives/folders in My Computer (when a DVD is popped in and when it isn't): (C) and HP_RECOVERY (D).

All my drivers are up-to-date; however, I fear that the problem here lies with compatibility issues with Windows 7.

Am I missing something or does it look like I'm in need of a new DVD drive that's compatible with Windows 7?

like the title states. i have read tons of forums to no avail. recently i reformated my computer, and could not find the product key for my windows xp. shortly thereafter, microsoft installed "could not validate this copy of windows" errors all over my computer. a little searching on wikipedia and i deleted them off. but, since then i have not been able to burn cds. itunes acts like it will start, get to 25% and freeze. zune software says unable to burn (unkown error). simply sending files to the disk drive ends with an error message as well. i dont know if this means anything but my windows media player 11 wont open because "windows validation needed". ive downloaded the newest firmware for my disk drive, ive tried lowering the burn speed. the blank cds im trying to use are sony cd-r 700mb. one sit had my check to see if my cd drive was burn compatible (it is, ive burned tons of cds before) and it is, all options are turned on to do it. all in all everything looks good hardware wise, all drivers are updated and "working properly, but not one program on my computer will burn cds.

let me know if you have any recomendations! thank you

I have a computer with windows 7 64 bit and 4gb of RAM. Two days ago for no apparent reason the computer locked up when I tried to drag a file to a usb stick. I could not use ctrl alt del and nothing but a reboot would unfreeze it. The same thing has happened every time I try to drag or copy a file to another location on the computer. Re-innstalling the system with an image backup has not fixed the problem.

The figures from Task Manager>Performance Tab>Resource Monitor>Memory could not be accessed becaudse I could not get into the Task Manager and had to reboot the computer. However, I did check on the figures after rebooting. They are:

Hardware Reserved: 37 MB
In Use: 1358 MB (fluctuating)
Modified: 55 MB (fluctuating)
Standby: 2365 MB (fluctuating)
Free 279 MB (fluctuating).

I have since had problems when trying to access games I have downloaded a while ago and until now have worked fine. As soon as I click on the game icon the computer freezes and I get a blue screen, I cannot access the Task Manager and I have to reboot. I tried three different games and the same thing happened. At best I might get to the first or second startup screen of the game then it either freezes.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop (I have to get the specs and exact model number later, I'm posting this from work because I have no internet connection at home) which I mainly use for playing DVDs and games. Up until about a month ago, it would play all of my DVDs just fine; I'd insert the disc, I'd hear the whine of the drive spinning, then two beep-like noises, then the WMPlayer would start playing the DVD. Then for a few of them, it would start whirring, , and make some other noises, then stop whirring, then start again like it's trying to read the disc again, and eventually it would just stop trying. I bought a DVD lens cleaning disc and have used that many times, but it doesn't seem to help much. Strangely, it doesn't seem to be caused by excessive scratching or smudging of the DVDs; I've put in brand-new DVDs straight from the packaging that won't play, but then I'll put in another DVD that has some scratches or smudges on it and it'll play fine every time. Any idea what might be going on? Again, I apologize for the incomplete info: I'll post that when I can. Thanks in advance for any advice!

File Explorer and Free Commander both freeze regularly. Task Manager says "not responding". Either will freeze after a single icon has been clicked. That is a second click on a different icon will freeze TM. This seems to occur most often when a .exe file is clicked. I've several downloads that I am trying to install to see if I like them but am having a real problem with TM. The file remains frozen until closed in TM. But if I reopen TM and click on that file it freezes. I thought TrendMicro might be the problem but I uninstalled it and the problem remains.

Could this be software related or maybe a memory leak perhaps. Any solutions or idea would be appreciated.

Hello rshillman

Explorer could be having a problem generating the previews (thumbnails) of the images. An image might be corrupted, or it might just be explorer`s fault.

Try turning off thumbnails. This means you will have no previews in any of your folders, but try it and see if it fixes the problem. you can always reverse this later if you want to by rechecking the box.

The thumbs.db file is generated by the Windows operating system. It is a database file containing the small images displayed when you view a folder in "thumbnail" view (as opposed to tile, icon, list, or detail view). No harm is done by deleting thumbs.db files.

To disable storing the miniatures in a "thumbs.db" file for each folder.....

Click the Start button
Select Control Panel
Select Folder Options
Click the View tab
Check "Do not cache thumbnails"
Click the OK button

Then search on all your harddrives including subdirectories for "thumbs.db" you will receive a complete list of them. Highlight all the "thumbs.db" files and delete them.

This problem started "out of the blue" a couple of months ago. I had a tech look at it, and the only solution he came up with was to create a new user account, which worked. The problem has just come back. I can't find anything online to resolve it, so hopefully somebody here can help.

When trying to save a document (could be from OpenOffice or LibreOffice or even a PDF), the Save As dialog opens and then immediately freezes. There is no way to escape--I have to "X" out of it and the document app crashes.

No new software has been installed since creating the new user account. We use Norton 360 and also Malware Bytes for protection.

This is a business computer, so obviously we need to get this resolved ASAP. Please help!

I thought LibreOffice was a Ubuntu-only program?

There is a known issue with this happening in LibreOffice on Ubuntu- Try upgrading to the latest version.

Also, get the absolute latest version of Acrobat or Acrobat Reader you can find

I found this, which is related:

Save/Print as PDF crashes Word - Microsoft Community

Make the error show up again, force the program out, and show us the Event Logs from exactly when it happened, maybe there is something in there that can tell us why it is happening.

I know OpenOffice has a Windows version, is that the same as LibreOffice? You might be better off just buying a stand alone version of Microsoft Word, if you can- That way you can save to PDF's and there won't be any problems. Both Office 2010 and 2013 have good Save to PDF functions.

A:Right click on file windows explorer freezes

Hello Pete Diebenow

I think this might be caused by a bad context menu handler. A context menu handler is a shell extension handler that adds commands to an existing context menu (Example: cut, copy, paste, print, Scan with Norton etc).

Download ShellExView and run it.

It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. Once the scan is over and the list is displayed, you need to spot the context menu handlers. Sort the results using "Type", so that the context menu handlers are displayed together.

General rule here is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

You can disable them ...they say "one at a time" and see what effect it has on the problem. You can do it a lot quicker by bisecting the list, disabling half of the entries in one fell swoop, rebooting and trying the right click. You just have to narrow it down. Then keep bisecting the list until it is just a few and do these one at a time. The problem is that you have to reboot between tries to get accurate testing of the results of your disabling.

The latest version of ShellExView marks all the non-Microsoft extensions in Pink for easy identification. All other types of shell e... Read more

Hi, a day or two ago I've had a problem where if I right click on a file or folder (any type) the wheel will turn up but won't load. Usually it will cause the explorer to crash. I am still able to view the video or music file at this time but right clicking will not work. At first i thought this was caused by iTunes as that won't open up either. However, upon restarting it will work just fine. I am able to right click and also open iTunes. I have figured out this may be caused after I wake my computer up from sleeping or hibernating. I have tested this out multiple times and it happens all the time. When i try to log out or shut down (or simply restart also) the wheel keeps spinning while saying Shutting down. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but I just wanted to include it as this is started to happen at the same time. I'm not really certain whats causing this after waking my computer up. I have been having a problem with Windows XP 64 Bit freezing when a file name in Explorer is double clicked. It happens with any file from any program. And it happens with files on a network as well as files on the PC's hard Drive. Actually "freezing" is not a good description. Operating in super duper slow motion then failing outright is a more accurate way to put it.

For example: I will open a folder on our network and browse to an Excel file I want to load. I double click on the name. Normally the file comes right up. However, more often than not nothing happens. After a couple minutes of waiting I have used Task Manager to discover that the "Not Responding" description is right next to Explorer's name in the "Applications" tab of Task Manager. Eventually the process will either bomb out completely and I'll get the "Send Email to Microsoft" dialog box. Or the parent application will load (in this case Excel) but without the file I selected being loaded.

And it's not just windows in Explorer. If I have an Outlook email with a Image attached, double clicking on the image name SHOULD take me right to the program associated with that file extension. However, it does the SAME thing as mentioned above.

I am running XP Professional 64 Bit with the latest updates as Service packs installed. The computer I'm using is a Dell Precision DWS490 that has an Intel Xeon CPU 3.20GHz along with 2 GB of Ram. Windows Update is set... Read more

For some reason my dvd drive doesn't play dvds anymore. It shows me an error and says digital copyright protection, but the dvd is an original. When I go to my computer the dvd is detected. Any ideas? ...............thanks

A:Can't play dvds

It is possible that you do not have an updated DVD decoder. Try updating the decoder or try using another DVD player such as Klite or VLC player. Just google them you can download them for free.

I played a new dvd movie OK but the next day when I tried to play it I got a blue screen with title of the movie plus PLAY or LIBRARY. Clicking PLAY just refreshed the screen.
I tried to play another DVD movie which played OK before & got the same result.
I can play either DVD on an XP machine using the ASUSTek ASUSDVD XP player.
Sometimes a brief image from the movie flashes before the blue screen refreshes.
A data CD can be read OK

This Dell laptop has XP Media Center 2002 installed.
WMP and VLC will play DVDs, but Media Center just sits there like it's reading "My Pet Goat" and does nothing at all.
This is a new, clean install.
I have SP3 installed and all update, so where do I look to solve this problem?

I have purchased an asus laptop with windows 10 already installed. However, it seems no disc, cd or dvd, works. Any disc put in seems to spin for a moment, then it becomes quiet. I have noticed under device manager cd/dvd drive does not appear and My Computer only lists local disc C. There is a pioneer dvd-rw dvrtd11rs under disk drives which says it's working properly. Something else I've noticed is when trying to use vlc player, the disc device has no letter selected and the messages your input cannot be opened and can't open mrl dvd appear. Is there a way to fix this or do I have to download a cd/dvd driver? If so, what's the best way?

A:cds and dvds won't play

If it's a new ASUS laptop and its disc drive isn't working or being detected, return it where you bought it so it can be fixed or replaced.

I have Windows XP with WMP 11 loaded on a Dell Latitude D600 laptop. I've noticed that I can put some DVDs in and they're automatically recognized and playable with WMP, but other DVDs I put in are not recognized and playable. What can I do to fix this? The DVDs that work are DVD movies that I purchased. The two DVDs that are not playing are DVDs that came from a training company. Thanks for your help.

Hello all. All of the sudden, when I went to put a DVD in to watch, I picked WMP to play it with and get error message C00D1163. Look that up at Microsoft's site. Anyway, after I close that, a few seconds later my computer will freeze up totally. I can't move the mouse, ctrl alt delte, anything. I get the same result with RealPlayer. I installed PowerDVD and the DVD will play fine but after I close the program, the computer will lock up in the same manner as before. I did install the latest drivers for my graphics card too. My specs are: MSI K8N Neo4-f, 512 MB RAM, AMD Athlon 64 3200+, Lite-On DVD drive, Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT video card.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I am trying to play some tutorial dvds that come with magazines. I have played them before without a problem but my computer shut down for some reason and now they won't play. I can play others but not the ones that come with a specific magazine and yes I know that sounds strange but I have done what the support says and have cleaned them and downloaded the latest quick time player but they still won't work. They just keep spinning in the drive. I have gone into the drive and gone to open but it en asks me what I want to burn? This makes me think the dvd may now have nothing on it. Not sure what the difference is between the discs that will play and the ones that won't.
I would be grateful for any help you can give me.
I have just tried to open it through my computer but it says my computer is not responding.Whe I go into task manager to end task it says that windows explorer is not responding and asks if I want to wait for it to respond or close. If I say wait it then comes up with what do I want to do with the blank disc?

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop and until yesterday I was able to watch movies. The disc will go in the driver and the drivers are visible in the control panel. When I click to check them they say the devices are working properly. I can feel the disc turning but media direct says that there is no disc in the computer. I have tried several different discs in case I had a bad movie, but nothing shows up. A friend recommended cleaning so I purchased a dvd cleaner, but it isn't recognized either. I have used it a great deal, is it possible I need to replace the unit? Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

I have an Acer Aspire 5920g which uptil today was playing my dvd's fine.
When I tired getting them to read today, windows media player said that there was a copyright disclaimer issue between my dvd drive, video card...and decoder

And this was supposed to be a regional issue (I have dvd reg killer on)
It told me and is still telling me that windows media player thought that I was set to region 1

I went to my computer (I have windows vista btw) and checked my dvd drive, when I found a surprise.

I had 2 drives, one cd and one dvd (the cd one is new, in all my time with this laptop I had never seen it) In any case, I checked all the drives, everything was region 2, just like the dvd I had tried to put it.

I then tried to see if disabling the "fake" cd drive would help, with no success

Then I proceeded by downloading other media players, everything from real to vlc

VLC manages to read the dvd, but the image is a big lot of fuzz and very staticky.

I then tried other dvd's..
for all other region 2 ones I tried, I had the same problem

and for a region free dvd, the computer isnt even recognising it.

Anyway, thankyou for reading this and I hope you'll be able to help

I have been reading tips and suggestions from this site for a long while, first time I've ever had to post though!

I have uninstalled deamon tools which had created the fake drivwe.

it hasn't changed the situation though, I still can't play any of my dvd's due to the same reason, any suggestions/help?

I was thinking of a rollback to whhen I installed deamon tools (sometime last week) because I know for sure that I was reading dvd's until at least 2 weeks ago (which is when i last tried)

good idea?

For some reason my PC won't play DVDs. I recently reformatted and installed a new CPU and when I first tried to play DVDs, it said it was missing the codecs. So I just decided to download a decoder pack, but it still doesn't play DVDs. Now it says to try and lower my resolution. I lower it to 800 x 600 with 16 bit quality and it still says to lower resolution.

Basic specs:
ATI Radeon X800 PRO
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+

EDIT: Well I just got it to work, but with Media Player Classic. Why does it work in Media Player Classic, but not Windows Media Player 11?

A:Can't play DVDs

Because WMP does not have the proper codecs. If you were to install say PowerDVD or WinDVD then you would be able to play dvd's in WMP as it would use the codecs from those apps.
