Category and Classic view window missing on Control Panel window

Q: Category and Classic view window missing on Control Panel window

Been messing with this for days. When I open the Control Panel I do not have the option to switch the view on the left side pane. All that is there is the See Also window. I went to view, Toolbar, Customize and added the views icon to the toolbar. As long as I keep the customize toolbar box open and move it up or down I can see it on the toolbar. Once I close the Customize Toolbar window the view icon grays out on the tool bar. My back button is the same way. I checked in another users window and the control panel is fine. I have Windows XP SP3. I am the Admin on the PC. Any help would be great.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For some apparent reason I have lost the ability to change windows views ( From Category View to Classic View and vice versa ) . Normally when I click Start / Control Panel -- I would get a window that comes up and on the left side of the page I could switch between views . I believe the Box was identified as Control Panel and one view was listed and if you switched views the window would change to that view . All I have now on the left side is a box that says SEE ALSO with " Windows Update" and "Help & Support " listed under the heading . All my icons are listed to the right of this . Can anyone help me get the control Panel switching header option back .??

When I go to the Control Panel and select Category view (if Not already selected) and then select "Printers and Other Hardware" my machine displays the "Encountered a Problem and must close" window, gives me the option to send an "Error Report" and then closes the Control Panel window. It does not do this in the classic view until I back out and then it does it there also. I also get a "Dr Watson Post Mortem DeBugger window" afterwards.

Any suggestions?

They are in a Icon folder in the imagere.dll in C:\Windows\System32 & if you are using 64 bit it's in both C:\Windows\System32 & C:\Windows\SysWOW64
1st do this System Restore Point - Create
Make copy's of imagere.dll and put on the desktop and edit the .ico images with something like Gimp each .ico has layers to it edit each layer then you need to Take Ownership Shortcut then Permissions - Allow or Deny Users and Groups and rename the imagere.dll in C:\Windows\System32 & if you are using 64 bit it's in both C:\Windows\System32 & C:\Windows\SysWOW64 to imagere.bak.dll and put the imagere.dll you edited in there and restart your PC

Can you please help me?
I am an extremely new user of Windows 7 Premium edition and am not a computer guru, but a fairly experienced user of XP Pro, and I use my computer as a tool not a toy. I am very busy trying to make a living and would just like to be able to see my Control Panel and folders and files in the classic view that I am accustomed to. I really don't have the time to start learning to do everything differently, and when I go to the help menu it seems to give me instructions for how this is done with Vista not Windows 7. This is really stressing me out, and I just need to get back to a production mode.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Alright so here is my issue. Whenever I happen to click on my control panel I receive this windows stop error 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x80506A01, 0xEC451DF4, 0x00000000). It is more of an annoyance than anything, as I can startup my computer and use just about everything on it just fine until I try to access my control panel. Whenever I send the error report to microsoft, it says there is a problem caused by the antivirus software (PC tools antivirus). I tried uninstalling it, just for the sake of seeing if it would help matters, and I again received the same stop error. Upon restart the microsoft error reporting says its a corrupted error report? I'm really not quite sure what the issue is, since now I do not have that antivirus program installed on my computer. Any kind of help to lead me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated as I am rather confused.

I have been experiencing an awfully long delay when I open a new window in XP. Whenever I try and open My Computer for example there is a delay of around 5 - 10 seconds before the window actually appears. However once the window is open everything is fine until I close it, then if I try to open it again it takes another 5 -10 seconds to open.
The same thing happens with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Control Panel and indeed every other window. There appears to be no hard drive activity during this pause and the CPU activity remains around 20% until the window actually appears and then it jumps to 30%.
I have run SpyBot, AdAware, AVG and I always have Zonealarm Active and nothing seems to work. I'm at a loss.
I did read on a different forum that someone had a similar problem and used Hijack This to help him solve the problem so hopefully the same will happen here. I've included as much info as I can think of. Please let me know if I have missed anything out.

Hope someone can help.

I find that I'm wanting to change the Microphone level quite often and wonder if I can somehow create a shortcut direct to it, so it's a 1-click thing, straight to the Levels tab.

Currently I have to click about 7 times to get to that tab. Is it possible to create a shortcut to a drilled down level like that? If not, does anyone know if there's a way to find where in the registry the Level number is stored ? Hmm, sounds weird. Do you have important data on your HD? Can you back it up? If so, back it up. Pop in the CD and do a repair installation (if it lets you). This should help. You may also want to try a fresh installation. How much memory do you have? It could be that you don't have enough to run Windows.

Hello to all:
This problem just started a few days ago on my Windows 7 Professional 32bit system.

When I open a Windows Explorer window and some Control Panel windows all is good. Problem is that when I try to close the window by pressing the top right window close button or if I right click on the taskbar instance of the window and choose to close it, the program does not close but instead is minimized to the notification area with the formation of a new folder icon. This icon is a standard windows yellow folder. If I expand the notifications area and hover over that folder, a balloon window lets me know that there are 'x windows' where x represents the number of windows that have been minimized (instead of closing as I originally wanted).

Furthermore, a right click on that folder in the notification area brings up a context menu including the names of the windows (that I can click on and maximize back onto the screen). At the bottom of the context menu are the options to 'Restore all' and 'Close all'.

Not sure why this came about. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Everybody,

If anybody could give me some pointers on my problem I would really appreciate it

I have Windows 8.1 on my HP Pavilion Laptop. I have this problem where after starting my PC, logging in and being dropped into the Panel view, I wait for about 10 seconds... and then the PC starts thrashing and constantly flicking between the traditional Desktop and the Panel view without me touching a button / clicking on anything!

The only things I can access on my laptop are:

Task ManagerGoogle Chrome (by clicking on the icon very quickly in Panel View before it flicks back to traditional Desktop)

This problem literally prevents me accessing anything else. As soon as I start opening something in traditional desktop mode, the pc flicks straight back to Panel view and it is lost! Even if I am quick enough to click on an application, it doesn't even load it!

I am almost certain it is some piece of software that I must have picked up along the way. I've been trying to use my Norton antivirus to scan and detect it... but I cannot even open that to scan, due to this very problem.

I even tried using the Trend Micro Home Call service, which I could access through Chrome of course. Unfortunately as soon as I tried downloading it I was told it had failed as there is no access to the internet(!?) very odd indeed.

I have not encoutered any details of this problem on the internet but if anybody could assist with this I would appreciate it so much! Thank you guys

Is there a way to edit the default theme so it looks like with the Properties - Compatibility - Disable visual themes? Setting the option is a good solution but disabling visual themes for many applications causes problems with them, e.g. with foobar2000. Which gets violated too.

A:Aero + classic window background

I suspect the answer is no as the theme that looks like that is that (if you see what I mean!) W7 automatically shuts down incompatible visual effects in most cases of incompatibility so this shouldn't happen. Do you have the latest releases of the affected applications? Foobar was updated at the end of April and Inkscape has a new (admittedly alpha) version since 1st of June.

If someone does not come by with a technical method to make the change, that your prefer, I would just go with system restore. That is what it is for and what I would try first.

I really hate the interface on Windows7. Dropping the old Explorer view where you could see all the folders was a really bad idea. I'm sure there's nothing I can do about that, but is there an option for a classic view of Control Panel? Previously, when you clicked on Control Panel, it opened a window with all the folders laid out. Now, I get a drop-down menu like the Programs menu. Is there a way to change that?

CP is an example, but same request on all screens with lists... in Win7, the default view in CP is "Icon with sub-list"... I much prefer the old view of a complete list with details of all options, files, docs, etc... the old view also offered the ability to sort by field column headings, which I used frequently... is there a simple way to revert to the old view and grouping?

Have you tried Windows Classic?

Hi Brink.
I was looking through your beautiful picture gallery of tutorials and noticed an omission on this item.
I am sure many users wish to keep their selected view. Your tip only allows the view for that session only, or at least on my computer. Fwiw, that "Other site" states that next time you open the Control Panel, your selected view is retained. That is not so. To make the view permanent, the user must right click the Control Panel window and select "Set as Default View...."

Hello Dave,

Thank you. It has been added to the tutorial.
