Internet Explorer, Help and System Restore not opening

Q: Internet Explorer, Help and System Restore not opening

When I try to open IE the window opens and then closes again. When I try to open the "Help and Support" or ?system restore? absolutely nothing happens. I have run a virus check with AVG and it shows nothing. I have booted in safe mode but still have the same symptoms. I am running Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 and automatic updates. I have run sfc /scannow, once this is completed, everything works fine. However, when I reboot, the problems return. I have gone through the 5 steps suggested on the forum and now am posting the log to see if anyone can help.

Preferred Solution: Internet Explorer, Help and System Restore not opening

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

When I try to open IE the window opens and then closes again. When I try to open the "Help and Support" absolutely nothing happens. I have run a virus check with AVG and it shows nothing. I have booted in safe mode but still have the same symptoms. I am running Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 and automatic updates. I have had a lot of discussions with Ried on the HijackThis log help forum and he suggested I now post on here.

Originally we thought it was a conflict with iTunes. Following a run sfc /scannow I was able to do a system restore and reinstalled iTunes and it has worked OK for a while. However, after installing Windows updates, the problem has returned.

My last post was:-

Hi Reid sorry I've been slow to get back to you. After I installed iTunes, the computer worked fine for a short while, but has gone back to the same problem. All is OK until I install the latest Windows updates. I currently have 5 to install:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (KB933566)
Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP (KB929123)
Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB935839)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB935840)

If I restart the computer or shut it down without installing the updates, it reboots OK and everything works OK, so it would seem that one or more of the updates is causing the problem. So I in... Read more

A:Internet Explorer, Help and System Restore not opening

Hi chateauneufdupa(pe)

Trying the updates one at a time would indeed be the right thing to do. Have you had any luck with that ? You can manually create a restore point before you install each update in order to be able to go back if any error occurs. You can also uninstall some updates using add/remove programs if you check the "show updates" box.

If you believe it could be some update conflicting with iTunes you could try to contact iTunes technical support about that.

I don't know whether MS reported any compatibility issues with those updates but maybe another MS tech will know more about that.

For the past 2 days, when I try to open my IE6 browser, it first takes up upto 100% CPU, hangs the system for a while and then opens up taking hell lot of time!
The same thing happens when I try to open another browser simultaneously.

Sometimes the process explorer.exe plays the same irritating role of hanging the system!

I've already scanned my system with the latest CWShredder, Adaware, Spybot S&D, and Norton AV 2005 but the problem stands as it is!

I'm posting my HijackThis log.

Please help me to get rid of this problem soon!

A:Can't start Internet Explorer or System Restore

Hi, do you have another browser installed on that laptop?
If yes, let us have some Pc specifications.
Check and post
TSG System Information Utility - found here.
http://static.techguy.org/download/SysInfo.exe
======
Download Security Check by screen317 from.
http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/
Or
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/securitycheck/

Save it to your Desktop.
Double click the install icon.
If using Vista - Win 7 - right click the install icon and select "Run as Administrator"
A command Prompt window will open.
Let it scan the Pc - press any key when asked.
It should now open in Notepad.
Copy and Paste the result of the scan in the reply box below.

The saved log will be called checkup.txt.

Hello and welcome to TSF

I recommend you Subscribe to this thread so you are notified of any replies via email. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

There isn't much showing in your log, so we'll try a general cleaning and see what turns up.

I see you have two or more Antivirus programs installed. In this case there can be too much of a good thing. Multiple AV's bog down your system and may even cause crashes. I highly recommend you remove all but one Antivirus program using Windows Add/Remove Programs.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

I ran scannow and saved the CBS detail log to my desktop. I then tried to run dskchk and it told me the volume was in use by another process and did I want to schedule it to run at the next restart. I want to thank you for your suggestion -- and I wish I'd had enough knowledge to have known to try that--- Unfortunately, my first reaction was to delete FIrefox (by Mozilla), so I no longer have that option to check out. ScanDisk error is "Windows cannot complete the disk
check." IE has an hourglass showing for about a second when trying to open,
then nothing. System Restore makes it to the last screen but when the next
button is clicked, nothing happens (when it should reboot to do the
restore). This computer bluescreened when running updates but I'm not sure
if that is related to these problems. I was able to run chkdsk /r by
booting from the install cd and using the recovery console. I was also able
to run sfc /scannow from windows. Also, Spybot S&D and MBAM will not install (hourglass appears then goes away).

This has been going on ever since I started using this provider, about a month and a half. Have been able to do system restore on the one computer but on the other (Windows 7) had to use the impression on the disk. It worked right for about 24 hours, till I ran into a webpage I'm accustomed to being able to use that said I needed Flash Player. After following the link and installing it there was no difference in what Manage Add Ons said, i.e there was a working copy of Flash Object or something but no Flash Player.

Immediately after installing the Flash Player it all started in again. HEAVY r.a.m. use, like 800,000 units for one iteration if iexplore. 20 iterations of internet explorer with apparently default setting to restore the page as soon as you close it. (And now it's starting to happen on the XP computer.) Even with Service Pack 1, the Microsoft install for Explorer 9 and 11 refuses to work. When I located ie 9 on a download site it caused the RAM problem in spades and had to do a clean boot, that is restore the system from the hard drive.

In the fifteen years I've been using computers have dealt successfully with a lot of problems, but never like this. I've been at it so long now so many days and so many hours a day that am afraid I can't even remember what happened and certainly don't know what to do next. I guess I need help with three things:

Set up pc at the original site, same probs.
reinstalled windows again thinking that the prob must have been caused by the modem drivers, but the same happened again.

The prob cant be spy/adware or a virus but Ive run out of ideas how to solve it.

Also system restore didnt work on the first install, and doesnt on the second, an error is displayed: the application or dll c:\windows\system32\mlang.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

This started last monday but I use firefox mostly.
Unfortunately windows is required for this assignment.

whenever I open internet explorer 7 everything seems to load just fine. some websites are perfect. however i have noticed that when i load yahoo mail, when i try to open a message its blank where the message should be. the headers are there and everything else but the message. And thats with EVERY message. I use myitlab.com for a course and i cannot get that to work either. when I tried to system restore, that will not load. The windows update website will not open or load. the search options on the computer (for searching for files) will not completely load. the actually search boxes will not load.

I have tried everything and i have no idea what the problem is. virus scan and spyware scans have come back empty. any help would be great.

thanks.

Hello Bleeping Computers!

I recently sustained a lousy phoney "System Restore" virus, which included an Internet Explorer hijacker. I've managed to remove the System Restore virus, but the Internet Explorer hijacker remains. It seems to cause Internet Explorer to run in the background, slowly taking up more and more ram (up to 900 megabytes), and occasionally it spams me a link to some file download which I always deny. It also causes some redirecting issues on Firefox, even when I've change Internet Explorer's proxy settings to make it inoperable.

Strangely, a lot of the registry entries that some of the System Restore virus removal walkthroughs listed for removal, were nowhere to be found in my registry, which I imagine has something to do with this persistent hijacking, but have left me scratching my head as I am unable to find them in my registry. Many of these missing malicious registry entries were related to Internet Explorer, but also my "Policies" folder in my Microsoft registry didn't have any sub-folders which it was supposed to, under any of the different "users" or "local machine." Anyway I just thought I'd give you a little backstory before you help me out!

Logged onto my home computer yesterday (emailing this from a different computer) - had a virus: Live Security Platinum, which imitates a virus removal software program. Would not allow me to run my McAfee or access McAfee's website. Initially would not load up System Restore either, but after a couple of reboots, System Restore became available and I used this to restore my computer to about a week before. With computer up and running, I updated my virus protection and ran a full scan - three viruses were found and removed. Problem solved, or so I thought.

After this, Windows Update detected 16 new updates and these were downloaded and installed when I turned my computer off. Later, when turning my computer back on, there was a configuration of the new updates for a minute or two before the computer fully loaded up. When it loaded, I could not and still cannot:
- access the internet (not connected, ran troubleshooter which cannot find the problem but when I try to install a new connection, it says no hardware is detected - though broadband modem is connected and appears to be operating normally)
- open any Word or Excel documents (message says it cannot verify the licence for these products)

Hello,I will be helping you with your problems. Please be patient while I assist you. Some points for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us Please do NOT run, install or uninstall any programs, unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Butt... I am desperate for help. Can anybody help me with an idiot proof step by step guide of how to restore my pc to happier times? It got infected with various virusses and malware inc google re-direct and I ended up with palladium pro rendering it useless. . . I have xp home edition. Used bleeping computer for step by step instructions of how to remove and was successfull... after a few days allsorts of popups, security warnings and redirect issues were back again which system restore got over (or so I thought). All this has come from me installing microsoft security essentials I beleive? I can no longer get on the internet, system restore now fails and I can't add/remove programs either?? Malwarebytes full scan shows 0 infected files. . . Is there anything I can do. Only have limited internet access through my mobile phone. Thanks in advance!

A:system restore failing, internet explorer won't open, unable to add/remove programs??

The assumption by many...that the effects of malware can be easily overcome and the system returned to happier days...just is not true.

In addition to file damage which may have directly inflicted by the malware...there is always the possiblity that key files have been damaged during efforts to troubleshoot and remove known/detected malware itesm.

System manufacturer and model, please?

Do you have any Windows installation CDs?

Greetings,

When starting programs IE 6.0, 'help and support' and trying to use 'user groups' and 'system restore' the applications all encounter a problem. All of the error reports refer to "ModName: mshtnl.dll".

This problem first began after using system restore to go back to earlier settings. [This was done because of problems of the internet connection always taking numerous times to dialup the ISP, when usually it was done on first go]. After going back to earlier setting all was okay until windows installed automatic updates and automatically reset the computer and thats when mshtml.dll errors began.

To try to fix these problems, I have already done a antivirus and adaware scan. Installed and ran registry fixers. The same problem occurs in XP safe mode. This has done nothing to fix the problem. Apart from problems discussed here all else seems to be functioning fine.

SAMPLE ERROR:
"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

AppName: iexplore.exe, AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180, ModName: mshtmled.dll, ModVer:6.0.2900.3059, Offset: 00061e69

Thankyou for your ideas and solutions

Respect.

Google has been redirecting, google images will only load a certain number of images and internet explorer opens randomly, when I do not even have it installed or use it. Also, phantom music/ads/speaking play when no programs or windows are open. I have run rkill, MalwareBytes and TDSS killer with no infected files being found. And that's where the extent of my knowledge runs out! You guys have helped me fix everything else, but now I finally need to post as I cannot finx this one based on other advice.
Much appreciated,
Cheers.

Well, the thread title says it all. I can't get either of these to open. I have heard that a shortage of memory will cause System Restore to not open, but I know for a fact that is not the case.

I just got a new laptop, secondhand, and installed Windows XP SP1 off the disc. I did all the SP2 updates, and both apps worked as of that. I downloaded some programs that I had on my old machine, and now I can't open either. I'm not sure if its related or not. I would roll back my system to fix it, but of course, I cannot. Is there a simple way to reinstall or restore these apps? I looked around the Microsoft website, but their tech support kinda sucks. Thanks

Hello all, after an incident with HP Support Assistant when creating a restore point failed, i decided to open up System Restore like i had done in thep revious months .

it had been enabled for some time but i dint open it for a long time until now.

the problem is nothing comes up
i use the Windows Search, i go to the file location, i use GodMode, but it still doesnt open.

in Task Mgr, the processes are there (multiple since i clicked on it a lot of times cause it wouldnt open initially)

i ended all the pprocesses related to rstrui and restarted System Restore one more time

but it doesnt open.
Help?!

A:System Restore (rstrui.exe) not opening?

Hi there, if it happened recently, then do a system restore. Or else you might need to do a Repair Install
Try safe mode with command prompt and type rstrui and see if it opens up.

In using Vista Home Premium 32 bit 0/s I found yesterday that when I tried to open System Restore it threw up an error box stating ClassFactory cannot supply requested Class (0x80040111).
Please close and try later. I have restarted the computer a couple of times but the same error keeps throwing up. I have may installed a couple of programmes since this may have happened but they have been JV16 2009 program and a windows update but nothing else.

I have used JV16 for many years now, this is a multi programme use but the main advantage is that it has an excellent registry cleaner.

Would your advise be to remove the programme.

Tom

I'm having some problems with my computer. I can't open most programs that would help me (spybot, adaware, malwarebytes). When I try to open these I get a notification that "ana.exe" is trying to make changes and needs permission. Of course, I don't let it but the programs won't open. I can't open Firefox or Internet Explorer. I have tried to use system restore but it is shut off or something... I've never seen that before. I tried to use system restore from the boot process but it wouldn't let me.

I also get a fake Windows Security Center popup that tells me to download some security program. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a windows 7 64 bit (ultimate) machine. All started a few days ago with a BSOD. Upon restart the computer was very slow.. insane resources being used by low key processes and could barely use windows. I thought maybe it was hardware, so I reseated the HDD and fiddled with the sata cables, ran a checkdsk. Nope the HDD should be good. Memory good too. Boot it back up and it's still screwed - everything takes forever to load, a folder or a browser. Spybot and Malware bytes could not be used, they were disabled somehow (just dont open). Installing any other spyware programs wouldn't work either. Safe mode or booting from disk made no difference on any of these issues as well. THEN I saw multiple chrome browers being opened automatically from my desktop! All to fake anti malware websites! Now I decided to back up any new data and system restore which has solved the issues with slowness HOWEVER, my firewall is giving my a notification constantly about this file "~f3c7.tmp.exe" attempting to make an outgoing connection - the second I block it another notification pops up. The source is all that changes. When I click "open file location" - Chrome opens this website which you obviously shouldn't open: https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/not/found/ Cute right? So here's my log and a screenshot.\Scan result of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) (x64) Version:29-10-2015Ran by Ataraxia (administrator) on ELATIONSTATION (29-10-2015 16:46:47)Running from C:\Users\Ata... Hello,

Recently, my computer was infected with the "System Restore" Malware. I followed the steps located at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-system-restore and was able to successfully remove the malware. However, after these actions I am still seeing some odd behavior.

My SATA HDD's on SATA channels 1 & 2 are no longer being recognized, and attempting to initialize them in Disk Management results in an I/O device error. Links in search results displayed with either Google or Bing are being redirected to other sites. Additionally, an iexplore.exe process is opening periodically in the background, that appears to randomly play audio from a video or radio stream (with no open IE window). Ending the process immediately stops the audio, however another iexplore.exe will open shortly after. Computer response is also quite slow, hoever that may be attributed to disk issues (Swap files were originally located on the disk on Channel 1).

Currently I have Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection installed as virus/malware protection. Additionally I have run scans with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and the tdsskiller with no success in detecting any running rootkits.

When I bring up Internet explorer many websites will not display correctly. For instance here http://xbox360.ign.com/ much of the page will display properly, but the headline story will not. Also when the advertisement/redirect page comes up when you first click on the page(sometimes it doesn't) the advertisement will not come up nor will it redirect to the main page. If I click on link buttons nothing happens, a regular link works fine, just not the button style ones(I guess buttons is a good description heck I dunno)

Also when I go to web based mail pages much of the page will display, but the body of e-mails will not. When I use IM, such as Yahoo messenger, I can bring up the program and type in messages but the message window that displays replies remains blank. I can neither see my message or the persons reply.

I tried system restore both in regular windows and safe mode and it is BLANK. I was told to go to RUN and type in "regsvr32 /i mshtml" but when I do it I get "mshtml was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found, mshtml does not appear to be .DLL or .OCX file" So what now???

I know when this started I loaded a game and was asked to load some strange messenger program(something or other X) for chatting with other gamers during online matches. I loaded it by accident and un-installed and deleted it. Since then I cannot use messenger or internet explorer.

I have done a couple of checks for viruses n such, and nothing. ... Read more

Yesterday Afternoon I logged on to the computer and started up Firefox.
As soon as It loaded many windows started popping up about a Trojan Worm and trying to show me how to fix it. At first I thought that it was pop ups. I closed all of the windows and resumed browsing the internet. After 20 seconds they all started popping up again. This time just to be safe i ran Spyware Doctor and it also showed that their was a Worm and it was in the High category.
Shocked with this I quickly ran an Intelli-Scan which just scans through the most common places viruses are found. After it finished it said that all viruses and infections were gone. But the pop ups didn't stop. So this time I ran a Full Scan and after completion it said the same thing and this time the pop ups did stop.
I thought it was all over, but for the past day and a half, Internet Explorer 7 keeps opening every 20 seconds and is getting very frustrating as I have to keep closing it and makes my computer run slow.
I don't even use IE7 as I use Firefox..
pls help.
Thanks

Hi there,

I recently had various malware on my computer which I removed (at least partialy) using RKill and Malwarebytes.

I was still having trouble with my searches being redirected in IE. So I downloaded and ran the software on your preparation page ie. gmer, DeFogger etc. (I have posted the scan logs).

Although Malwarebytes is no longer finding anything harmful, neither IE nor Firefox will now open. And on trying restore the system to an earlier point (both in and out of safe mode), I'm told there have been no changes made, and the system cannot restore. Hope this is all relevent...

Many thanks,

Tom

bump===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our MRT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the MRT Team... Hello. This is my first time on this website so hopefully I am doing this correctly. I am currently using Mozilla Firefox as my default browser because there were so many pop-ups and glitches with my Internet Explorer (i.e. my wireless keyboard and mouse would not work properly with IE). However, recently, while I am on Mozilla using the internet, my Internet Explorer opens on its own directly to a pop up page. The home page (which I have set to "aboutblank" is not opening. The longer that IE is open and I dont realize it, the more tabs open with more and more pop ups. I have listed all of the sites as "Restricted SItes" but they are still able to open. I have the pop up setting as block all pop ups and it is constantly happening. I now have the IE set on "Work Offline" and for right now it is a temp fix but how can I get this to stop? I have scanned with Norton and it found nothing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is naturally driving me crazy!! Thanks for your time!

A:Internet Explorer Keeps Opening!!

Try using another spyware scanner, Spybot S&D, AVG, SpyWare Terminator. As for your IE, just disable it. Simce your IE opens on its on, that tells me that you have some kind of adware or spyware on your computer and it will eventually get to Firefox.

Internet Explorer keeps opening on it's own. It opens up to 60 windows at a time. I do not even have to be using Explorer for it to start going crazy. I don't believe I downloaded anything right before it started happening. I have already tried Spy Bot, Ad-Aware, and Norton. None of them can tell that anything is wrong. I tried Panda and Housecall Anti-virus but they both freeze on my computer. Also, I can't get the MacAfee Stinger to work. I would appreciate ANY help with this annoying problem! Thanks!

I posted in the discussion before I could get hijackthis to work. Internet explorer keeps randomly opening itself (up to 60 windows each time). I've already tried Spy Bot, Ad-Aware, and Norton. I couldn't get Panda and another anti virus system to work (kept freezing). I am running Window's XP I believe. I would appreciate ANY help! A:Internet Explorer 6.0 not opening at all

Hello ims to TSF,

A couple of suggestions here:

1. Try installing Mozilla? Firefox as a web browser, and see if that helps to get you onto the Internet.
I am fairly certain that Microsoft? have ceased supporting IE6, and most websites have been upgraded to accept only the latest editions of all browsers.

2. You really need to Update your Windows? XP SP2 to SP3 + plus all the security updates; furthermore, the latest version of IE is IE8 for XP or IE9 for higher versions (like Windows?7).
There are a number of updates for Windows? XP including a newer Service Pack 3.
At a rough guess it will take you perhaps 2? hours or more depending on the speed of your Internet connection to download and install these important updates and fixes.
Not updating your Windows? XP is leaving you open to vunerability to malware/viral infections.
What Anti Virus program are you using, and when did you last; do an update of its definitions; and run a full system scan, or do you not have an AV program installed?

Please post back with this information.

Kind Regards,
