Please advise how to fix this problem.

Preferred Solution: Virtual machine failed to generate VHD tree: 'Catastrophic failure'('0x8000FFFF').

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Paul,

My Vista system keeps messaging me that my last backup failed, and gives an error message, "Catastophic failure 0x8000FFFF". I Googled the error message, and was directed by Vista to a download for Registry Booster 2009 by Uniblue. I downloaded the program, ran it, and got still another error message from the "registrybooster.exe.log". It reads as follows:

Im assuming you dont have a backup from before the problem started to restore. One thing you can try is to run the system file checker (in command prompt) by running sfc /scannow.

Another is if you have your vista dvd to do a repair install.

If you dont have a backup I suggest you backup before the repair install

Finally and best option is to do a clean re-install. that will get rid of your reg problems but you will have to re-install you apps, etc

What can I do so as not to lose everything?

The error number you gave seems to be specific to SQL Server, which is used by some backup utilities - firstly, what are you actually using to do the backup? And has it worked in the past?

Hi. I have a Gateway desktop computer with a 454GB hard drive and a second internal hard drive with 100GB plus 11.6GB which are partitioned drive J and K respectively. I have been filling up the smaller partition with photos. I have a lot of raw files and it filled up quickly. My problem is that I cannot open any files on Drive K. It says that "This folder is empty". When I tried to move the files to another location, a "catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF) message comes up. Is it possible to access these files without losing them?

Thank you for your help.

A:"catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)

You should run chkdsk on drive K:\

This usually fixes disk errors which seems to be whats happening, especially since you're getting the "catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)" message. Searching around for people with this problem reveals that running chkdsk might have solved their problems.

Run chkdsk by opening cmd.exe and typing in:

Code:
chkdsk /f /r

shutdown /r
This will restart your computer, and the chkdsk process may take a while.

I am running vista on an hp laptop.  I had some problems last year and got help here.  The gent that helped me had me download tweaking.com and I just realized that this was the last time my computer created a restore point.  Now everytime I try to create a restore point I get the catastrophic failure error.
I have cleaned out my temp files and run chkdsk/f to try and clean up the drives.  I have tried the microsoft fixit files and have gotten no results.  I have since removed tweaking.com from my laptop.
Any help would be appreciated.

hiya try this,
Make sure that the "Volume Shadow Copy" service is enabled and running:

Right click on Computer in the start menu and choose Manage.

In the left pane, expand Services and Applications. Click on Services.

Scroll down to find "Volume Shadow Copy". It should have a status of Started and a startup type of Automatic. If not, you need to enable it:

Right click on the service "Volume Shadow Copy" and click Properties. Change statup type to Started and then click Apply. After clicking Apply, click Start. Now click OK and try backing up again.
or try this
one of the first things I did was to create a test user with a profile on a non-default location. I wanted to explore the possibility to store a user's complete profile and documents on another physical disk. After doing some testing, I disabled that user but didn't delete it.

I deleted the user as well as the related profile registry entry from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList after backing it up, and rebooted. After that I was able to make a successful backup.

So, to all of you who still experience the 0x8000FFFF backup error, have a look to see if there are any profile entries in the registry that are corrupt (point to non-existing locations) - and make sure to back up any entries before you delete them.

Hello!

I was kindly helped once in the past with a System Restore problem here, although I later discovered some restore points still would not go through. I decided to live with the problem.

While goofing around on the Internet, I clicked on a page which redirected to one of those scary pages that refused to close on my broswer (the kind that warns you of a virus), and the way I normally would have dealt with such a page was to close the browser via Windows Task Manager. This time I had no patience, seeing if I could get out of the page fast, and I thoughtlessly clicked on "OK." The tab still would not close, and after ending the program through Task Manager, the browser - Chrome - had stopped working. I figured I'd go "System Restore," since I didn't feel like uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome.

That's when I got the "Catastrophic Failure (0x8000ffff)" message.

Since I've already had experience with this problem, I have tried:

System Restore from Safe Mode (no go)
sfc /scannow, (reported corrupt files and repaired)
chkdsk /f /r C: (I let it run)
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free - clean bill of health
Tweaking.com - Windows Repair All-In-One- clean bill of health
ESET Onine Scanner - clean bill of health

A:how to resolve unhandled exception catastrophic failure error code 0x8000FFFF

That message usually means the hard drive partition is "dirty" (ie contains errors).
Run the error checker to detect and repair errors to the file system.

Right-click the hard drive icon & select "Properties".
Click the "Tools" tab.
Click "Check Now".
Tick both options, then click Start.
If the drive is the system drive (ie has Windows installed on it), you'll need to click "Schedule disk check".
Now restart Windows & the disk check will run before Windows loads.

I'm trying to backup my Vista Ultimate machine using the built-in backup program. Doing a complete PC backup works fine, but the "Back Up Files" option always fails with the following error: Catastrophic failure 0x8000FFFFThis happens after some 10-15 seconds inhto the shadow copy.I've been searching for a solution in this forum and all kinds of places I can think of, only finding others who have the same problem, but no solution. The Windows Event Log is just as informative as above with no more information.System description:Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 32bit (installed from fresh DVD with SP1 included)Master disk: 80 GBBackup disk: 250 GB (150 GB free)4 GB RAMIt's a newly installed system from scratch. Before the rebuild the backup worked like a charm, no issues whatsoever. I can search for and restore files from the old backups without problems.Any ideas or solutions?Mike

Ok folks, I now have a solution (to my problem):While still waiting for feedback from Microsoft (see above), I ran across this post, where Christine Fok from Microsoft helped another user with a similar problem.Even if my system was newly installed, one of the first things I did was to create a test user with a profile on a non-default location. I wanted to explore the possibility to store a user's complete profile and documents on another physical disk. After doing some testing, I disabled that user but didn't delete it.I deleted the user as well as the related profile registry entry from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList after backing it up, and rebooted. If the problem is an inaccessible path or file, why not tell the user about it, while still backing up everything that is accessible?Mike

i hv downloaded the setup of virtual cd v10 through idm . During the download i paused it for a while then resumed it . The file downloaded successfully. It was archived in rar format containing setup.exe of file size was 103mb. When i extracted the rar archive through winrar it gave an error of the file being corrupted. Then i used advanced rar repair 1.2 to extract it. It extracted succesfully . The setup.exe (Macrovision installshield) too opened successfully but during the mid of the installation it shows an error called feature transfer error : catastrophic failure. This happens every time in other machines also. Then i sought for the temp folder created during installation in the temp directory and found that the extracted file size was only 32 mb while the setup being 103mb which means the setup was not able to extract all the files hence the error was coming.
So i wanted to ask is there any solution to repair the setup so that it functions correctly or any method to extract all files from the setup and run it manually. also i am not able to redownload the setup at the moment so please give the answers accordingly.

Hi,

I've having a few problems that apparently may be related.

1) Vista Backup stops with Catastrophic error 0x8000FFFF.

2) A search on error 0x8000FFFF says that it may have something to do with Java.

3) Java's site says that I don't have Java installed.

4) Downloading Java ends with a Java error 25099, the zip file wont unzip properly?

5) Explorer closes down frequently and has to re-start.

6) Java is in the "Program files" but not registered in Control Panel un-install programs?

So, what does all this mean and what can I do about it?

How do I find out if I have Java working on my PC? Why wont the Java download unzip?

The only option I can see is to un-install Java from Program Files manually, do a Registry Repair and then start over with trying to install Java again.

I'll do this but I thought that someone may know something else about this that would be important to know.

So, does anyone know anything else about this and what to do?

Thanks,

John

Hi guys,

Thankfully, been a while since I needed to post here but today it felt like old times...

I fitted a new Radeon 9600 pro today. Installed the drivers. Rebooted and the PC suddenly died completely.

I opened up the case - the PSU had failed - red hot and smelling of burnt plastic.

I went straight out and bought a new Case/PSU but after fitting everything, I can't even get the system to POST. When I press the power button - nothing.

If I take the power lead out, then re-connect it, the system will power up for a couple of minutes then suddenly stop without any disk activity at all.

I've checked all the physical connections but everything seems fine.

My suspiscion is that the new PSU is faulty - ironic - that will teach me to upgrade on Friday the 13th Or might the PSU failure have fried some other components?

Just hoping someone might have some miracle cure.

I've spent hours trying to do a repair install of Windows 10 on a VM Ware Fusion 8.5 virtual machine. The host machine is a mid-2010 iMac. The virtual machine is running Windows 10 Home x64 1607. The reason I'm doing a repair install is because some system files are corrupted and "sfc /scannow" only gets about halfway before it says it couldn't load some resources then quits.

The "Windows 10 installation has failed" message appears not long after starting the installation when it says about 6%.

I've attached a screenshot of the failure message as well as disk manager and the Panther folder which is curiously unpopulated (there's nothing in the two folders shown above). The Panther folder doesn't contain any error logs. However, on a previous installation attempt, I looked at an error log and it showed that it was not able to copy something from the installation disc to a location on C:/windows.

I have installed Windows 10 without problem on a number of other machines, but I'm stuck here on this one. By the way, no external drives or devices are attached to the machine (other than the apple bluetooth trackpad and keyboard which have never been a problem on this and other virtual machines). I've run chkdsk on the virtual machine and the drive appears to be ok. I've tried doing this repair install from the DVD drive as well as by copying the .iso image to the desktop and mounting it in file explorer. The result is the same.

I've tried doing this repair install from the DVD drive as well as by copying the .iso image to the desktop and mounting it in file explorer. The result is the same.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Hi,

About two weeks ago my secondary HD died.

I had software installed on that drive and now that the HD is gone, my windows XP registry thinks certain programs are still there.

I cannot uninstall the programs that were on drive "F:" from "add remove programs", I get an error saying that there is no drive "F:".

When I try to reinstall any of the programs or related products onto my C drive, the program tries to automatically install to drive "F:" and I get an error saying that drive "F:" does not exist.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this? I would prefer to not have to wipe my C: drive, and I'm sure there is some type of fix for this issue.

If you could take a minute to fill in some of your profile information that would be helpful to all members of the forum
Knowing someone's location in the world can be extremely helpful, even if you just put a country.

Also remember to post any problems or questions that you have in the appropriate forums

With regards to your problem, you could download CCleaner and delete the entries in the add/remove programs list

There should also be a way to change the default installation drive, i'm using windows vista otherwise i'd have a look but it could just be that it defaulted itself to installing to that drive.

While you have CCelaner open, run the registry cleaner, that should help as well

Hey guys. So I got this new monitor 1440p 144hz...and it was having issues, so I swapped it out with older monitor...1080p 60hz.

New monitor was having blackouts...i adjusted settings, tried lowering speed and resolutions with no luck. I packed it up and started the return process. It was a Viotek 32", curved gaming monitor.

I played a few rounds of Battlefield 1, with older monitor that had used for 6 previous years. quit..went to play C&C Generals when I got a direct x error. Said to make sure I was using version 8.1 or higher or that my GPU net the minimums "lol".
I went to properties and selected the lowest resolution and all the sudden lost all video.

I did a hard reset, still didn't work. Tried different cables, nothing. I pulled out GPU (MSI 1080 DUKE 8GB) and plugged into onboard, nothing.

I reset the cmos and then boom, I got it to come on. Went to bios, everything looked normal, exited, it restarted and then back to where I started, black screen.

Windows 10 does boot and I can hear the Windows jingle...

I pulled the memory, all of the SSD's except the boot, and no change.

I just replaced my power supply with an RMX850 a week ago.

Stats:
MSI pro carbon gaming board.
I7-7700k - water cooled with an H105
16 gigs Corsair ddr4 3200
MSI GTX 1080 Duke 8gb
5 SSD'S with various sizes

Hi, I want to perhaps lower the space for the shadow storage. I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

I have run cmd as administrator (right click -> Run as administator).

Whenever I put in vssadmin list shadowstorage an error comes up (see picture).

Ideas? :/

P.S: I've uninstalled daemon tool's to see if that was the cause, didn't work. I've also uninstalled SP1, didn't work, reinstalled SP1, didn't work. I'm not sure what the problem is.

The third picture was made to show there is no System Restore in the System Tools area.

Hello. Well I was operating my computer just fine. I decided to install some of the security updates that windows updater had been nagging me about and chose shutdown to install them. 33/33 updates were installed and it hung on the message "Windows is shutting down" for 30 minutes so I decided to manually shut it off.

After this my computer would halt on a black screen. I inserted my XP Home disk and saw that it gave me no option to repair. Therefore I went into the repair console and ran:
chkdsk /r
chkdsk /p
fixboot
Yes
Exit

XP was now running correctly aside from the de-recognition of sound and the system resorted to beeping instead of playing audio. I attempted to remedy any device conflicts and installed the appropriate audio driver for my board.

Restart. Sound still doesn't work.

Restart. I check to see if I have the option to repair on the XP Home Disk. I am allowed to repair now and do so.

Restart - > Boot-up -> BSOD before login screen referencing fltmgr.sys

I load fail-safe defaults in BIOS. Same error. I decide to boot from disk once more and go to the repair console to run another chkdsk /r or possibly manualy replace fltmgr.sys under system32/Drivers with a valid one on disk. I press "1" to load C:\windows and BSOD referencing another STOP:0X00...

Now I decide to repair it once more instead of working with the recovery console. After pressing 'F8' to agree I am presented with another BSOD referencing "Page_... Read more

Was the "Catastrophic failure" on the phone or PC?

Were you moving instead of copying the photos?

Where are the 132 now--on the phone, PC or both?

I tried installing a driver for my compaq FP7317 monitor. Problem is, I always get this error when running the setup:

[Component Transfer Error]
Component: 2k and XP
File Group:
File:
Error: Catastrophic Failure

After that, it simply closes. I've tried installing from the CD AND from the official driver download- same result.
What I do know so far that this is an installshield problem, and that it the error only occurs on my computer.

Any input on how I can get this driver to install correctly?

Most monitors don't need drivers. If you're having problems with your display resolution, you need to download and install video adapter drivers.

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and that did not help.

Folks, newbie to the forum here. I received a Linkstation 120Gb last week and it had a catastrophic failure (no power at all) after 48 hours. In this time I transferred all my data to it, including sensitive contact data that I cannot afford to send to outside agencies.

Amazon won't replace or refund without me returning the drive.

Buffalo UK basically said the same (even though support guy said they bin faulty units rather than repair them).

I'm thinking about trying to remove the hard drive and keeping it, and sending the rest of the linkstation back.

What would you guys do?

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread. Thanks for your cooperation.

For this issue, I'd remove the drive and backup and remove your data, then reassemble it and send it back for refund.

I created a backup on an old drive. I then realized there was a lot of junk on the drive I could remove so I just reformated it hoping to back up windows 7 again after the drive was formatted. When I went to control panel and selected Backup and Restore after formatting my backup hard drive, it just said

An internal error has occured
Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)

I don't know why deleting this backup would break the functionality of windows 7 backup and restore.

Anyone know how to fix this?

A:Backup and restore catastrophic failure

I would guess the restore function was looking for a file from the backup it needed and was removed by the reformatting.

Can you start backup and restore at all? If you can, perhaps changing the backup location would help. If you can't try unplugging the drive so it can't be seen. If you then can start the backup/restore, change the backup location. Then reinstall the drive to see if it will work again.

If none of that works, maybe do a restore back before you did the backup?

I was using my laptop last night and the battery died out. This morning, I plugged it in and turned it on. When the computer turned on, I received a message saying that windows did not shut down properly, like any other message that would be received if the battery died out. I clicked start windows normally and the black screen starting windows came up and stayed up for about 15 minutes. Nothing happened, so I turned the computer off and restarted. The same thing happened, so I clicked the other option which was Launch Startup Repair. When I did this, I selected Startup Repair and it recommended doing a system restore. The last known date that the computer was running properly was last night, I selected that day that came up and an error message appeared saying that system restore failed due to an unspecified error. Catastrophic Failure (0x800ffff). I tried using an earlier date, did not receive that error, but the computer restarted. However, it still brought me to the same page. If someone could please help me, I would really appreciate it. I'm computer illiterate but my friend is on here also and he knows what he's doing, unlike me . Thanks everyone!! BTW I have Windows Vista and the computer is a Gateway, don't know if that will make any difference but just thought I would put it on there

I am trying to turn of VSS on the drive that I use as my parity drive for my flexraid configuration. However, when I click on System Protection from Control Panel I get an error that says:

There was an unexpected error in the property page:
Catostrophic Failure (0x8000FFFF)
Please close the property page and try again.
I have looked for solutions online and the most common seemed to be run scannow from the command prompt.

I did that and it said it fixed some errors. I have rebooted multiple times and still get the same error.

I have also gone into services and made sure that VSS is started and running. I am at a loss for what to try next.

Hello, Thank you for your help recently. I did what you said to no avail. It says "Could not initialize CLR Unknown Error in the box and the Top of the box says Managed MAPI service catastrophic failure", it pops up over and over again while I have Microsoft Outlook 2003 open. I also have not been able to open email the last few days which is bad for a one person run business.

I just uninstalled Norton, seems like too many problems when I use it.

Off topic what is the best freeware out there for virus and malware control?

Back to the topic,

What should I do to give you the information you need to determine if I have one or many problems? (bad pst file, virus, ect.)

I use Windows XP Professional 2002 with SP2 installed, using Microsoft Business 2003 for software.

This problem has been happening for about one month.

Two months ago, the saving of my pst file and then copying from notebook to desktop and reversed completely failed. Now this stuff is happening.

Please help as soon as possible and tell me what reports I need to give to you.

Thanks,

Kathy

Using Add/Remove programs does not get rid of everything from Norton. you need to download and run the Norton Removal Tool. After that, download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Check any box that refers to Norton. Do not check any box that refers to Microsoft Office applications. Run that then see what happens

Hello all. New to this site. I have Vista home premium. The laptop is an Amilo, Fujitso Siemens. My problem started with message of low disc space on D drive. It's now coming up with unable to back up files. There is nothing to delete on D , only the operating system.Recycle bin is empty. My last successful back up was 17/9/12. I then looked in my "back up files" to see if they were piling up but they only went back to september 2012. Somehow I then got to a a part that said disk C has errors and clicked to repair it. Then came up catastrophic failure (0x80000FFFFF) I have also done a full scan for viruses etc but nothing has come up. I've tried to restore system to last sucessful back up date in September but then I get back to error etc .It can't do it whilst using computer so asked it to do it on start up. I switched computer off and on and am back going round in circles. Any advice please ? I only have basic knowledge of computers so don't know how to solve the problem.
Thanks for any help. Regards Rita

Hi,

I am trying to Install Monthly Security Rollup Update in our Organization thru SCCM 2012 and i got this error "Failed to install Updates "Catastrophic failure" 0X8000FFFF

So I tried Manually installing the Sercurity Rollup kb4034679 in one of the PC and it failed to install the update and i found the following error in the eventviewer

Event id 3

Windows update "Security Update for Windows (KB4034664)" could not be installed because of error 2147549183 "Catastrophic failure" (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\Windows7SecUpdates\Windows6.1-kb4034664-x86_Aug_2017.msu"
       ")

The solution i tried is to uninstall the previous security update which we installed in May 2017(KB4012215) and then to installing the Aug Security Patch worked.

Now i need a solution on how to push this Security update kb4034679 to entire PC's in our Organization without uninstalling the old update.

Is there is any solution for above error.

Alright, these are two posts that I made on a different Windows 7 forum. Just trying to spread my effort to get the most replies possible. The first one was posted about a week ago after a few days of various issues leading up to catastrophic failure of the PC. The second post that I post as a reply is my follow-up tonight about what has happened since:

Over the last week, this computer has become more and more problematic. Just to get it out of the way, I can, with 99.9% certainty, rule out viruses or malware, as I'm extremely careful and use Malwarebytes, AVG, and Firefox with Noscript. My computer has been virus-free for years. Every scan (the above two, Spybot, Avira, Ad-Aware, Bazooka, HijackThis - all scans have always been clean for years). Keep in mind that this computer was functioning flawlessly up until this week. This hardware setup is from 2008 and I am using the same Windows 7 disc that I installed on it three years ago. This is the second format and re-installation since I built the computer. No problems the last time, which was about a year ago.

About a week ago, I started getting random squeaks and buzzes out of my speakers - especially when a progress bar is moving in a browser. I figured this was a power issue. Three days ago, my Windows volume control stopped responding. I'd click the icon in the taskbar, and it would take a good minute or two before it would show up. Then I wake up a few days ago, and the computer is frozen and the speakers are maki... Read more

A:Slow, catastrophic failure, format and reinstall, now fails to boot.

One week later:

Here's what's happened since that last post, and the details may be a bit flaky, as it's been about a week since I actually touched this computer:

After I got Windows formatted and reinstalled during my original post, I finally got the chipset drivers to install after about an hour of the installer hanging. This changed nothing, so I decided I might as well just try another format and reinstall. This time, I ran the Chipset installer, and it was nice and fast. The installer asked me to restart my computer, so I did, and when it tried to boot again, I got a "Bootmgr is missing. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart." error. This happened unstoppably, so I tried formatting and reinstalling Windows a couple more times because I figured maybe Windows was missing some essential boot files.

Every reinstall, I just kept getting the same error. Then occasionally, I'd get a "Disk Read Failure. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart." error. Just like last week (but not before these problems started), the Windows installer has taken an eternity to even open the "Install Windows" dialog, taking fifteen minutes or so between clicking "Install Now" or "Repair Tools" and actually having the next window appear. As of now, I haven't actually gotten Windows to boot in a week or so, still getting these same errors. I tried the "Startup Repair" tool, but it ran and found no problems that could be repaired.

I ran a Command Pr... Read more

Hello, and thanks for this fantastic forum!  The topic title is the end result, I'll describe best I can the precursor events.

First, Win 7 update froze, waited for an hour with no circle movement, that circley thing that rotates during updates and such.

Second, restarted computer, googled what to do about this, several recommendations came up.  I decided on a System Restore.

Third, the instructions said to restore to the to the restore point just prior to the frozen update.  This failed, so I attempted to restore to the next closest Restore Point.  I should note, that these first two were for the updates of that Tuesday, meaning they had the same date and similar times.  No clue if this is relevant, I just thought it odd as the system updated on shutdown.  I didn't manually install the updates, if I am correct would have created a Restore Point for each manual update.  Then the Catastrophic Error message popped up attempting to restore from the 2nd closest Restore Point.  The two had the same dates and similar times.  I realize I should have written down the Error codes, but I neglected my normal diligence.

Fourth, I reset the computer thinking of trying Safe Mode options to restore the system.  Holding down F8 during the entire boot process would not boot to Safe Mode.  The loading Windows screen did NOT appear the computer just went to the Log-in screen.  I restarte... Read more
