Activation Period Expired, Key Blocked. How Do I Activate?

Q: Activation Period Expired, Key Blocked. How Do I Activate?

I purchased my Windows 7 Pro and installed it, thinking that I would activate it later, then didn't use the computer for some time. Now, when I attempt to activate, I'm told that my key has been blocked. The only solution I'm being offered is to purchase another key. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Activation Period Expired, Key Blocked. How Do I Activate?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was lazy and didn't back up my system recently...very bad of me, I know. My activation period for XP ended today and now I can't get back in until I call Microsoft. Unfortunately it's Sunday night and I need to get into my desktop!!

When I reactivate tomorrow, will everything be there? (Please say yes)

Is there any way of getting in tonight?

A:Didn't back up before activation period expired...

Once you activate your copy of XP, everything should be just as you left it.

If you had specialist software, you'd be able to access the data but you'd be limited as to what you could do with it

When deleting a file from a local drive, that I have permissions to the local folder on, I'm getting the Semaphore timeout period has expired error.

I've tried to make it as simple as possible for the system, after doing a clean boot, and it still failing, I'm currently in safe mode, without networking, and am still seeing the error.  Anybody have a suggestion or work around?  Files in other
folders are not having this issue.

Hello, My grandpa is trying to get his photos off of his SD card.
I just set him up with a clean install of XP Pro on his desktop
He has an on board usb card reader like 15 - in - 1 or something like that.
He puts in his SD card and trys to acsess the drive D: since that is the slot for the sd card
Then the window locks up for a few min then he gets a pop up message saying:
"The semaphore timeout period has expired."
He has already tried other camera cards with no change.
Any ideas?

hello again...

dang this thing is a pain!!

new issue today, trying to save a tiny .rtf file to external USB drive, and get "semaphore timeout period has expired" message and have to save to local drive instead. also get the message if i drag and drop into the desired location.

perhaps related to the issue i occasionally have: the machine loses connection to the external drive and either the folder shows empty (it's not!) or doesn't show as even being connected. little blue light on the drive will sometimes go out, sometimes not, but still no access...

EDIT: i have two verbatim USB drive attached... one or the other of them will occasional disappear from This PC and when i look at device manager there is an error on that drive. i disconnect and reconnect and the drives show up and the error in device manger goes away... there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why this happens. when it does and i try to save something to the drive, that's when i get the "semaphore timeout period has expired"

i have tried to update drivers using windows search online and it always says i have the best drivers loaded....

the drives have been checked for errors and windows reports none... there is still quite a bit of available space on them (80+ gigs on each) and when they are connected and live, i can access files with no problem... it just decides to seemingly drop the drive randomly...

thanks for any help...

I maintain some software that makes a tcp socket connection to a different piece of software and sends data back and forth (pretty basic stuff there). We use boost asio to handle reading and writing of data over the socket connection. We have a client that
has deployed this software on Windows7. The client has been having issues with our software not being able to maintain a reliable socket connection. One thing I have noticed is that quite often the networking callback are receiving the error: The semaphore
timeout period has expired.

This error is not coming from anywhere in our code (or the boost code). I've done some research on it and I found a Microsoft Knowledge base article on this error for Windows XP (support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/325487). I've seen a few people ask questions about
this error on Windows7, but they're all in regards to moving files to different drives, nothing regarding network connections.

What does this error mean in regards to Windows7? Does the knowledge base article I mentioned still apply to Windows7?

I have x1 Desktop and x1 Laptop.
They are both on Win XP Pro and are fully updated.
I have always networked them using Cat5 cables and an active hub and had a shared Internet connection on the Desktop and had no massive problems.

one day recently I plugged in the Laptop and turned it on. Not only could I not connect to the net but neither PC could access the other.

I have run the Network setup wizard on the Desktop and then on the Laptop and managed to mess with things so the ICS is now working again. But neither PC can see the other.

I get the error message:

\\Desktop is not accessible. (sometimes this part says: 'MSHome is not accessible')

You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found. (sometimes this part says: 'the semaphore timeout period has expired' or 'The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available')

There is only one user on each PC, ME.

I have opened command prompt and ran ipconfig and then ran 'ping'. Both PC's can ping each other with no problems but I can still not access files on each PC. I HAVE shared folders on both and they should be seen.

Hi All, I have bought my new laptop HP Envy AE101NX yesterday (25-May-2016). However, when I open HP support center application and recovery applications, where we see the warranty period information it is showing incorrect information. The store supervisor informed me that it is in 2 years warranty period. The information being showin in these apps is 6 Months and that too Start Date : XX/08/2015End Date :    XX/02/2016. This Feb-2016 is already passed. I could not understand how come the warranty is already expired, even though it is for 6 months for some reasons. Can anyone please advise on how to get this fixed? ThanksVamshi

A:Error 0x80070079: The semaphore timeout period has expired

Hello Ady,

Thanks for your post!

This issue may be a little complex and require some steps to troubleshoot:

1.    Update the driver of wireless network adapters in both of your computers.
2.    Temporarily disable all the firewalls and anti-virus applications, then check the issue again.
3.    To exclude the factors from other services and applications, do a clean boot to check the issue and perform Step 4.(KB929135) How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vistahttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;929135
4.    With clean boot, try to apply the hotfixes contained in the following KB articles:(KB932045) Error message when you use a network connection to copy a large file from one Windows Vista-based computer to another Windows Vista-based computer: "The connection has been lost"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932045(KB932063) Several problems occur on a Windows Vista-based computer when you work in a wireless network environment
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932063
If problem still persists after steps above, this issue is very possibly due to network devices or configurations, please let me know:

1.    Whether this problem occurs in wired network?
2.    If strengthening the network signals, the problem can be changed?
3.    What size of files will lead to this error.
4.    Does this error terminate the copy process?

Greetings,

My environment is: Win'7, Visual Studio 2010, C#

There is another message on these forums with almost exactly the same title. It's closed, so I couldn't post there.

I'm getting that exact same response from Win'7 in a try /catch scheme.

i.e., "...The semaphore timeout period has expired..."

I am quite confident that the serial port is really there, as he will open and will transfer data from time to time.

It's the whims of the hardware that have me so confused.

The exact same code worked perfectly last night. In fact, it has worked for weeks.

The statement which I believe is causing the error is...
TheUsersChosenSerialPort.Open();

Much like the other thread mentioned, the port is a BlueTooth connector, and Win'7 is reporting him okay, and so on.

I welcome responses from those with useful knowledge on this topic.

As I had a spare copy of Win 7 (upgrade version)

I decided to configure a new Hard Drive (Which I have on swappable pull out trays)

So to make sure there were no bugs or glitches, this is what I did.

(1) Formatted the Drive

(2) Clean Install of Win XP

(3) Clean Install of Win 7 (To Upgrade XP to Win 7)

(4) Using an Iso Disk I burned I then installed a free upgrade to Win 10 (which was accepted and registered by MS)

Everything was fine except for one thing.

When I try and use MS Edge, I get a banner on the Screen which says 'This App can't open, your trial period for this App has now expired.

Visit the Windows Store to purchase the Full App

Then there is a Link to go to the Store but there is no sign of an App for MS Edge!

I don't understand what's going on here, so need some advice what to do.

I've still got Edge on this Hard Drive but not on this other New Drive.

Try this that I found it may work for you as I have had no trouble at all
***YOU MUST HAVE THE WINDOWS FIREWALL SERVICE RUNNING FOR THIS TO WORK***

1. Find C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe
2. Right-click and Run as Administrator
3. Copy this line:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

4. Right-click in the Powershell window to Paste and then press Enter.
5. There is no need to restart. The fix should implement right away.

If you have previously disabled Windows Firewall or do not have it running, the above steps will result in errors. Use the steps below to enable Windows Firewall and the reverse if you wish to turn it off again afterwards.

1. Right-click the Start button -> Click Run
2. Type Services.msc and press Enter
3. Scroll down to find Windows Firewall
4. Right-click then click Properties
5. Under Startup Type dropdown -> Select Manual. Click Apply
6. In the top left portion of the Services Window, Click Start this service.
7. Now follow the steps in the first section, and it should work.

These steps worked for this guy
They have no guarantee to work for you
Also worked for the other person as well.

Dear Community,
My G: Drive has one or multiple corrupt (dirty) files on it. Normally you can trouble shoot the problem, but this isn't working.
Going more indepth to solve the problem I tried the following command: CHKNTFS /X G: in CMD (Command Prompt).

This initally seemes to work but after some time it gives the following error:
"the specified i/o operation on hs was not completed before the time-out period expired"

Then you have 3 options, to cancel, try again or continue. Either way it's not solving the problem, which is to make my G: drive workable again.
Who can help me with this? I've added some screenshots the steps and errors i'm encountering.
Thanks in advance,

Once you have a valid product code click on the option that you wish to use and it should prompt you through the process.

Where are you getting the product code from?

Let me back up several months ago, I had ordered Win XP Pro SP3 OEM from Tiger Direct, ok, no problem, I placed it on another computer (That ended up getting stolen) Problem. The Product key was on that laptop, so there went that (Solution to Problem, I had found a Product Key Software program to recover the Product Key, after my activation period ended).
I retreved my product key, have since entered it into the area where it's supposed to go, went to resolve the unactivated issue and have come up with an error message of Microsoft Feeds Syncronization has encountered a problem and will now close, I am getting frustrated with this, I have jobs that are waiting for me to get them done, and I can't be waiting any longer, I have tried contacting Microsoft directly and was disconnected in the process of trying to get the issue resolved.
Other issue is that I can't format the HDD in Safe Mode due to restrictions Microsoft has made to the software, nor can I access the internet while there either.

I tried Everest, but it only gives information on the current os.
By the way,the activation period expired while his children were playing games and we had already changed the modem without installing the correct drivers.
Question 2.If I put a modem recognized by windows in it,would it then try to activate,(successfully),under its old configuration?

You have a KMS Volume License Key for Enterprise - such Keys require activation at private servers, not at MS's public servers.

From where did you get this Key? You need to contact your System Admin for assistance.

You will lose NO data when it goes out of grace period - but MSE will start a 30day countdown if installed, and cease working at the end.

I told him to call MS support and they should be able to help him out... this is what they told him (quoting directly from a chat window):
"oh my fn god, just spent the last half hour with some moron who can not speak any english about the issue and basicly he said the key is right but being a pre tower, acer did not keep up some sort of agreement with windows so the key will no longer work."

This doesn't sound right... why would it just stop working suddenly, and what sort of agreement would mean Microsoft would refuse to reset the activation??

Any suggestion, anyone? Here's what did NOT work:

Microsoft support - phoned them.

Hello Everyone,
Of course I'm typing this post on my laptop that came pre-installed with vista home premium 32-bit installed on it. A short time ago I stumbled across a site on the internet that offers free software to change older computers that are running older operating systems ( like mine ) into a chromium o.s. that comes installed on newer chromebook computers. At the time I thought this sounded interesting, so I thought I'd try it out. BOY was I wrong for even remotely ever considering it !! I downloaded the transformation software..I followed the installation instructions exactly..( the software MUST be installed via usb drive ). Of course I was informed before I started the procedure that " everything on my hard drive would be deleted ", which at the time didn't bother me. That's where I went wrong..in the fact that I hadn't done a system backup in case something went wrong..which it DID. To keep a long story shorter, I essentially had to start from scratch on my laptop. Anyway, I was FINALLY able to get a copy of vista home premium SP2 32-bit from a forum member in here. The install process seemed to go normally, when I got to the page asking for my product key, I entered the one that came printed on the c.o.a. sticker on the bottom of this laptop. The operating system did install ok, but when I checked to see if my copy of windows was 'activated' it wasn't.I feel like I haven't done anything illegal..I just wanted to get my laptop running again. Hi everyone, I purchased a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate from Bayswater Solutions on Amazon.co.uk.

Windows 7 will not activate. The key has been blocked. I have used the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation tool and the software is valid.

I tried the phone validation and received the same response. The key has been blocked. I phoned Microsoft Support who told me that the software was only valid for use on a network of 5 or more machines with a domain controller. It is not valid for home use. Is this accurate?

I had some trouble installing Windows. I attempted to upgrade from Vista multiple times and the upgrade failed. In the end I did a clean install. I have read that if you install the operating system too many times this can cause the key to be blocked. Can I please have your opinion. Do you think Microsoft is correct and that I have been sold a bad key or do you think the problem is that I caused the key to be blocked by running the installion too many times?

Many thanks for your help.

A:Windows 7 Won't Activate - Blocked Key

Running the installation too many times shoudnt matter, as long its on the SAME hardware.

Are you sure MS said the key is valid on a network of 5 or more machines? Volume activation in win7 via KMS server (company server) requires that the KMS server must receive activation requests from at least 25 products before it will grant activation. MAK keys, OTOH have no such minimum no. requirement though there is a max limit to the no. of activations possible. So I dont know what MS is talking about.

As far as passing validation is concerned, that is immaterial because unactivated windows will pass validation by default.

On the whole, it does look like a bad key. Try downloading and running the MGADIAG tool, then click on the Copy button at the bottom of that tool, paste to notepad and save as .txt file, then upload that text file in your next post.

Maybe I am missing something, but here is what I did:

I had purchased 3 XP Pro UPGRADE CDs about 3-4 years ago.

I installed them on my computer, and two other computers for my family right after purchase.

The other day I reformatted my HD. I was reinstalling everything on my computer when I installed XP and used the wrong activation key to activate XP (I didn't look at the box label and I used one of the keys that was for my mother's computer)....however, I was still able to activate XP. I also downloaded the WGA and it didn't nag me that my copy might not be genuine.

How is this possible? Obviously our system's hardware is different, shouldn't it have denied me access to activation? Should I go back and re-install XP and use the correct activation key or is this not a big deal?

A:Activation key isn't valid but still allowed to activate?!

well if it was me for peace of mind i would reinstall with the proper code. that way you know things are all legal. besides if you have ever have a computer problem the tech will have the right code for the computer and will be able to fix it if its fixable.

After many, MANY clean installs due to a misdiagnosed problem (it was a power supply issue, not a hard drive one) my stupid Windows CD key stopped being legit. I guess. I've been having to call in EVERY TIME to activate. Well the most recent reinstall made me lazy and I let the activation month period run down. I thought I'd do it at the last minute.. why not?

Well at 10 days my son asked why I hadn't activated. He said he could bypass the activation through Regedit and so I let him try.

BAD. IDEA.

The activation key in the icon bar disappeared and when manually opening the activation screen, it says it's already been activated. I thought I was good to go, but after a couple of days I started getting a countdown when I logged in. You know, You only have 5 days left to activate Windows.

I thought that was bizarre because I couldn't activate it otherwise, so I ignored it. Well today I've reached 0 and I can't log in. Period.

When I attempt to log in it says I need to activate, pressing no logs me out. Pressing yes opens the activation window that says it's already been activating.. pressing ok to that just logs me out and the same thing happens. I can still log into Safe Mode. Are there any fixes for this, or do I have to reinstall AGAIN?

I hate this so much.
