Changing BIOS options - PLEASE HELP!

Q: Changing BIOS options - PLEASE HELP!

I need to know how to change the boot order in the BIOS. I figured out how to get into it, now I can't decipher how to change the boot order.

I run a Toshiba Satellite 3000-S353 model - Phoenix BIOS

I have a constant restart problem and can't get into Windows at all. I'm trying to load the setup from the floppy disk drive and I need to know how to get it to boot from the floppy!

I don't have the WinXP CD so that's why I'm doing it this way.

I'd really appreciate any help here! I'm freaking out!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First of all, I apologize in advance if this has already been addressed in a previous thread. I couldn't find anything, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. That being said, here is my problem.

I use the Google Toolbar when I'm in Microsoft Internet Explorer. Just recently, strange things have been happening when I open it and while I'm surfing around. Here are the three things I have observed:

1. My homepage that I set up has been reset to "sbjr.com". I didn't do this. I keep resetting it to what I had before (www.insightbb.com), but it won't stay that way.

2. My Google Toolbar will become unchecked in the View menu and will no longer show up, but a new menu bar appears that is called "llprprbrsvo" in that same View/Toolbars dropdown. This happens when I first open the window as well as at random intervals while I'm surfing.

3. Twice today, I will have a couple of windows open on different sites and without warning, they will just close.

I have Ad-Aware installed on my computer and have run it twice, but nothing has helped so far.

Thanks in advance for any color you can provide.

In the Dell XPS 13 (9360). Using the latest BIOS 1.3.2 (but the old previous BIOS version was the same).

If you go to the "Fn Lock Options" under BIOS, there are 2 options, they are listed as:
Lock Mode Disable/Standard   = The F1-12 Keys behave as function keys
Lock Mode Enable/Secondary = The F1-12 Keys control the secondary functions.

These options are Swapped. If you disable the "Fn Lock" and set the mode to "Lock Mode Disable/Standard", log into Windows, and Press F1, it will then MUTE the system. Even though it should act like an "F1" Key.
If you go back into BIOS, set the mode to "Lock Mode Enabled/Secondary", log into the system and Press F1, then the Help comes up.

The options are swapped on these two configure options. Please update the text in the BIOS to match the appropriate configuration. Thanks. I've included a ScreenShot of the BIOS options. "Fn Lock" does do what it describes (disables Fn-Esc). Doesn't matter if u turn this on or off. If you have it set up as I do below, the Fn Keys are set for the proper Function (F1-F12) operation. However, the text says it should do its secondary functions in this mode.

Hi, whenever I put an audio CD into my computer it automaticaly opens a browser window to show the disc contents, which I would like to change.

I have looked on the web which says that if I go to My Computer, and right click on one of my CD/DVD drives, then click on properties, there should be an autoplay tab, but its not there.

Does anyone know if it can be done from somewhere else? Or why that tab is not there on either of my CD/DVD drives?

Excuse my lack of computer terminology, but I am referring to the bar at the bottom of the screen. The one which includes the 'Start' button and the tabs for the programs you have open. When running a pc game, it takes over the whole screen -- including the bottom control panel I am referring to. So, my friends could be trying to talk to me through MSN messenger, or I may be receiving important emails, and I'd be none the wiser. It is my understanding that there is a way to run games while keeping this bottom bar open at the same time. I would very much appreciate help in accomplishing this.

Ok, when you boot up a manufactured PC, it shows a screen before it shows the windows boot screen (such as HP Invent or Compaq, etc.) Well I am building a computer for someone and I want my name (and maybe logo) to show up when they turn on the computer. How can I do that? My other question is, when you right-click on my computer and click properties, it shows up with the following screen:

How can i make the computer i'm buliding put my logo and my name there?

Any help is appreciated, thanx to anyone that can help or knows of any programs that can do what i Need done.

A:Changing Computer Options

I'll address question 2 first

registry key: hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion

Edit the values in this key for registered owner and anything else you want to modify.

The logo and the text to its right is done by: creating a file in notepad with the following contents

Manufacturer=type whatever you want here
Model=type whatever you want here

save this file in c:\windows\system32 - as oeminfo.ini
save the picture you want to add in the same directory as oeminfo.ini as oemlogo.bmp

That's it

1. In order for you to change the startup screen you will need a program to edit the ntoskrnl.exe file. I use Resource hacker.
You can find it here

I don't know if this is the startup logo you want to change. I know dell as well as hp have a logo that starts up as soon as you start the computer. You can't change that through windows because it is not located on the hard drive. I don't know the location but my guess is it's on the cmos chip. I can enable and disable my "MSI" picture in my BIOS settings but cannot replace it.

Good luck

In XP, in the folders section of the control panel, you were able to use advance settings for file extensions and decide what was available when you 'right clicked' on that type of file, but this is missing in Vista. Is this option still available in Vista and if so, how do you access it???

A:Changing right click options

I'm not entirely sure what you are referring to. There never was a right click "context menu" editor in XP -- changes there had to be made manually in the registry or with a 3rd party utility of some kind.

The File Types dialog, present in XP, is not in Folder Options and does not offer the same editing features -- which were largely restricted to how the file opened and in what, when you selected it.

The nearest thing in Vista to the file association dialog of XP is the Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type or Protocol with a Specfic program.

I believe all the basic locations for context menu items in the registry in Vista is the same as in XP as covered here:

In a folder, go to tools and then folder options. Under the view tab, in the scroll box go down to "remember each folder's setting" and make sure that the box is checked. If it still messes up, go back and then click the box "reset all folders".

Hi all, I'm new here. I found this forum yesterday and have found it very informative in helping me 'clean' my computer :)

But in doing so I have a problem now.

Basically, when I boot up, to start with I got two pop up boxes telling me that 'WinZip Quick Pick.Ink' and 'BT Broadband Desktop Help.Ink' could not be read and to choose a program or search the internet to find it. I clicked to browse through programs and then tried to exit out of it. Everything slowed up at this point and I must of miss clicked on Adobe, as now when I boot up, Adobe photoshop opens and tells me that the file cannot be read by this program.

How can I solve this? It's kinda annoying having to wait for photoshop to load everytime I start up the computer.

The reason I have got the winzip and BT .Ink files is because I was sorting through the start up programs, getting rid of what I didn't need anymore to help speed up the computer (well I believe that's what I done anyway, I didn't do it through msconfig). I had already tried to uninstall all the BT internet software as I have changed my ISP and it was conflicting. Yet I was still getting the BT help loading at start up.

Another thing, when I go into msconfig and uncheck WinZip Quick Pick.Ink, BT Broadband Desktop Help.Ink and BTHelpNotifier in the start up section, I cannot apply because it tells me I'm not the administrator. I get a box saying 'An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service.

A:Problems after changing start up options

Some of your cleanup has removed the two files listed. If the programs are needed, simply reinstall them. If not, uninstall them (assuming they are listed in Add/Remove Programs). If they can't be uninstalled, then simply open regedit and search for references to those two files and delete them. XP will then stop trying to load them.

As for Photoshop, you likely have the .Ink extension associated with it. Open Windows Explorer...goto Tools / FOlder Options - File Types tab - find and delete the lnk extension association.

I've noticed that when I change a folder view to show large icons, for example, other folders change to that, too; or when I change the view to Details, other folders also change to that. I have to be forever setting and resetting folder views. Is there a way to get Windows 7 to accept a change to the view settings of a folder without propagating that to other folders unless I ask it to?

Thank you.

I did it a while ago, but I have completely forgotten how to do it? Perhaps somebody could enlighten me?

To be more precise, I recently installed the K-Lite codec pack, and it has added an option on my right click menu, which is displayed when right clicking on any file, called "Media Info". This is quite annoying because I don't use the program often enough for it to be on my right click menu. So I would like that to be deleted.

I would also like to add an option to my right click menu that is displayed with any file called, "Scan with Spybot - Search & Destroy". And this should obviously scan with spybot. The directory for Spybot is the default:

C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe

Preferably, it should have the spybot logo next to the scan option, but I don't know whether this is asking alot.

Thanks in advance for any comments

Hey everyone, got my X1 Extreme on Saturday. I needed to update BIOS in order to be able to install a Linux OS.Update worked fine, everything booted, etc. However, once I changed "discrete mode" to "hybrid mode" (=default value) in BIOS graphics settings, it caused a bricked BIOS. Error sound 0288 - Motherboard replacement.Ofcourse no new motherboard is available in my country so I need to wait several weeks.Or I send it back to my dealer and get a new X1E. That will mean 3-4 weeks of waiting. Please Lenovo...fix the **bleep** BIOS...  I now have to wait 1 month for a new device. I will need to update BIOS.Will it brick again? Will I need to wait 1 month again? Maybe I should tell the service technician to bring 3-4 motherboards when he comes by to replace it. Might take several motherboards until I finally got a working system. Please Lenovo...fix the **bleep** BIOS...

If you don't have a pro version of Windows it has to be done through the registry which is very tricky. If you do not know how to use the Windows registry or feel confident to it can be risky.

I want to reformat and install windows 10 on my grandmothers laptop.
However, there appears to be no way for me to get into the bios to modify the boot options.
F12 is the only option on start up, and that just shows the following Boot Options
Windows Boot Manager
Windows Boot Manger
+Network Boot
(Nothing appears here)

F2 DOES NOT bring up a bios menu, I cannot reiterate enough that it does absolutely nothing.  (Almost everything I have looked up for this keeps responding with pressing F2 on startup).

I saw this post en.community.dell.com/.../19503569

And tried doing the first part but nothing seems to happen (the reboot power down cycle on start up) After 2-3 times it just goes to the login screen.

When i disable the "animate", "fade" and other features in the "performance options"(s. attachment), it works fine until i restart the PC. After reboot the "animate" etc. are checked again. this is the same with admin and user account. This PC has a fairly fresh install and i didn't do any crazy things.

Most of the items I uncheck stay unchecked. but these animate and fade ones (the most annoying since i want a snappy OS) always revert back.

any ideas how to resolve that? none of the W7 PCs i use have that problem, only my new one.

A:changing performance options doesn't save

I found out what the problem is and wanted to share the solution:
- it seems only the standard user accounts had this problem , the admin account would "save" the settings.
- I changed my "standards"accounts to admin accounts, adjusted the animation settings and reverted them back to "standard"accounts and they now keep the setting.

Some other hints I found while googling are (but i didn't actually follow those since I found above solution). Just in case above doesn't help someone:
- adjust registry (I looked, but it turned out the registry was set to not animate)
- restore (did, but didn't help)
- system repair (didn't do since one second before i did i found the above solution

I have a dilemma with a computer. The homepage is listed as msn.com in internet options, but when you click on the IE icon and it tries to load, it changes to something like www.login.....msn.com. I can give you the exact address (not at that computer at the moment), but the point is this, it changes and the person can't get into their hotmail e-mail account on that computer. If I type in yahoo.com or google.com or any other address it connects no problem. If I go to msn.com after connecting to the internet and click on the hotmail link on the left side, it comes up with a page that says to check the connection. The person can get into the mail on other computers, but not this one, any suggestions why this would happen and what I can check???

I was trying to configure accessibility options in XP Pro to allow for right clicking when controlling the mouse pointer with a keyboard, not only was I not able to do this, but it also changed the resolution of just my taskbar. I went through the entire wizard again and made sure that I had not inadvertently changed something. Does anyone know what's going on here. I just don't want my taskbar to look like garbage.

EDIT - I fixed it by going through the accesibiltiy options wizard and checking the box that said "Change font size," which for some odd reason actually keeps the font the same size, when unchecked it enlarges it, which I'm assuming caused my icons to do so as well. That would explain why they looked like garbage.

A:Stuck in boot screen after changing options at msconfig

Welcome to TSG!

You'll need to edit the boot.ini file to remove the /safeboot:minimal option that msconfig added.
You can rebuild the boot.ini file using the Recovery Console
Boot with a Live CD to edit the file
Connect the drive to a different PC to edit the file.
#1. Boot to the Recovery Console.
Set your system to boot from CD, either by setting the boot order in the BIOS, or using the boot menu if your system provides one, usually by pressing one of the FX keys; F9, F10, F12 are common.
Insert the Windows XP CD and boot the system.
When prompted to Press any key to boot from CD... press any key like Spacebar or Enter

When you boot from the CD, the following is displayed:
On a black screen:
Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration...
Screen turns Blue, and Windows Setup is displayed at the top.
at the bottom is displayed the following in sequence:
Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver
Press F2 to run Automated System Recovery (ASR)...
Setup is loading files (file names displayed)
Title changes to Windows XP Professional (or Home Edition) Setup

The options to setup or repair Windows are displayed
Choose To repair a Windows XP installation using recovery console, press R.
You may need to choose the Windows installation if you have a dual boot system. Type the number of the Windows installation you want to log into.
You will need to enter the Administrator password unless you previously disabled that requirement... Read more

how to open more options in bios? my bios's version is J01 v 2.25 i want to show more setting

A:how to open more options in bios ?

Abdo2, welcome to the forum. I am not certain that you can see more options in the BIOS.  Once you're in the BIOS, you can use the arrow keys to move from section to section and through the options in each section.  If the option is greyed out, it means that it is not available.  HP keeps their BIOS options to a minimum. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Please, if here is an owner of a ZB00k with nVidia Graphics, answer me this Question: If you set in BIOS this Option: "Hybrid graphics enabled", is your nVidia Card still visible in device manager? I have a lot of trouble since my ZBook has BIOS-Version 1.36, so this answer is very important for me. Best Regards ant thanks from Michael

I have found a z drive on my computer I didn't put there I want to format my harddrive and reinstall windows, but I can't enter any of my bios options they are locked out

A:cant change bios options

Exodus777, welcome to the forum. HP limits the amount of BIOS settings that can be changed.  You can use the Recovery media that you made to Reset the computer.  Also, you could use the Disk Management to extend the partition next to Z.

This happened before i even upgraded my processor or even my ram, its missing options like uefi/legacy mode, and other type of stuff. I have the latest version of the bios, and i even tried resetting it by taking out the battery from the mother board, although it didnt work. It would be great if someone can help me out. If you need pictures, dont hesitate. Thanks in advance!

Have you ever seen a BIOS that has absolutely no boot options other than the internal disk.

I bought this little 11.6" Asus X205TA 1.0 laptop which is actually a handy little device. It obviously has no optical drive but 2 USB ports. But the temporary and permanent boot order does only allow booting from the internal disk. I am really stuck if I want to e.g. recover from a Macrium image.

I guess I will have to make my own refresh images. And even those I can only use as long as the machine functions. Any other ideas.

That's a new one on me, Wolfgang. Seems your only option is something like Paragon Migrate and a spare SSD to swap in case of catastrophe.

Where can I find an operating manual for the HP branded motherboard? My Oct. 2016 (build date) Omen 870-030vx desktop has 4x SATA connectors on the MB (Z170 chipset).  It has a 512gig SSD boot drive attached to SATA#1. I attached 2x 6gig HDDs to SATA#3 and #4 thinking that HDDs are usually connected in pairs for RAID such that channel 1 would be SATA#1&#2 and channel 2 would be SATA#3 & #4. The BIOS set up lets you change from AHCI mode to RAID but it never gives you an option to choose which set of HDDs you want to place in the array - nor does it have an option to choose RAID "0" or RAID "1", etc. If RAID is choosen in the BIOS then the computer fails to boot.  What have I done wrong here?

A:How to set up RAID in BIOS - not many options

Hi: You can't just switch the controller settings without making some changes in the OS registry, or the OS will not boot. Please see this related thread.  Should be the same for W10. https://communities.intel.com/thread/28709 Unfortunately, I have no idea where you would find a manual for the motherboard.  The only guides available will be on the support page for your PC. You may be able to use this general guide for how to set up a RAID array...starting on page 15 http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03519601

Hey, I recently fully reset my laptop to get rid of all the bloatware that was on it from the factory. When I went to reinstall my two linux distros that I run alongside Windows, I was presented with a new looking BIOS/Boot screen. It said press sex for start-up menu so I did. I looked in the settings but there was a lot missing and nothing like the old text based bios that was on the laptop before.Does anyone know what's going on?
