Preferred Solution: Old Computer As External Monitor?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,
I just bought an HP Envy 23" All-In-One desktop a few months ago and am just now attempting to pair it with an external monitor (TV) via the HDMI port. The computer doesn't even detect that it's been hooked up to anything and the TV still says "no signal". I tried the same HDMI cable and TV with my laptop and it works fine, so it must be the computer. Any suggestions? Is it a driver problem? I don't know much tech-wise, but am willing to try if anyone has any ideas on how I can fix this.

The operating system is Windows 8.1 and the monitor is an AOC Envision 22" TV, model number L22H998. I visited the AOC website in search of a driver and didn't see the model listed. Is there perhaps an equivalent I could use? I don't know much about drivers.

Thanks and let me know if any more info is required for an accurate diagnosis.

A:New Computer (Win 8.1) Won't Detect External Monitor

Hi Dejalive, welcome to the Eight Forums.

Couple of questions:
Is the TV signal input set to correct HDMI port (for instance if the cable is in HDMI2 in TV, the TV signal input must be set to HDMI2)?Does the Windows Screen Resolution Tool show the TV when HDMI cable is connected both to PC and TV?If Screen Resolution does not show the TV by default, does clicking the Detect button help?

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite A205-S5000 Laptop and when i try to connect it to my tv the only resolutions that show up that the tv can support are 1024x768 and 800x640. The TV manual states that using the VGA connection, the supported resolutions are 640x480, 720x400, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x720, 1280x768, and 1360x768 but none of the resolutions above 1024x768 show up as a resolution i can change it to. The computer's display is of 16:10 format, could this be why 16:9 resolutions don't show up as an option and is there any way that i can force the graphics card to display 1280x720?

-Thanks,

A:Computer won't do 1280x720 on external monitor via VGA

Hi jetblue1085,

Try updating your graphics card drivers. When I installed my new card, the resolution on my monitor would not go to it's max. After updating, it was fine. I realise it's a slightly different situation, but give it a shot.

Hope this helps,

Hi guys, so my Acer Aspire 5315 series is really really hurt. Screen broken,Cd drive missing. And the registry is a tad messed up because i used to be able to click on the portion of the screen i can still see and click properties > and switch to external. Now i get an error trying to do that.
What i want to do is re install the OS so i can start fresh, but can it be done with an external monitor and a usb drive?

Main questions :
Where can i download Win XP or Vista or 7 to get it on a USB drive?
Can I do it with an external monitor?
Thank you, any other suggestions such as how to fix the properties error (Rundll32) would be appreciated, thanks.

A:Formatting my computer with an External Monitor

As long as the computer is capable of booting from USB - you can install Windows from a USB flash drive. You would need a genuine copy of Windows.

There is a simple program out there that can help you with this..
WinToFlash - Install Windows from usb - Home page

You should be able to hook up an external monitor - the laptop probably has a VGA output.

Hey all. I got a new laptop and it uses windows 10. My goodness things on windows 10 is a lot different than 7 and not in a good way.

First off, i tried to connect external Monitor to it. It connects without an issue. With my windows 7 laptop, i use my 24' external monitor as my main display and the laptop screen as the other one. Most of the time, everything is on the main display with nothing on the other screen.

My issue is I can do this... except if i want to drag something to the laptop screen... the laptop is on the left side of the desk, the monitor is on the right, i have to drag it to the right which is the complete opposite of what i want. I could fix this on windows 7 easily which i recall switching the 1 and 2 box. Im having tons of issues with this on this new laptop with windows 10. I did a lot of trial and error and can't fix this. I know its extend display and trial and error doesn't work. The other thing is if you look at the laptop screen, why are there icons and everything else in the taskbar? There should be none of that on the 2nd monitor. So why is it there?

The other thing is there is absolute no sound on my external monitor which is my primary monitor. I could fix this on windows 7 very easily. I have no idea how to with this.

Also when i click on a picture, with windows 7, you could just use the scroll mouse on the mouse to get a larger image of the picture. On windows 10, all that does is go to the next picture etc.... Read more

Whenever I connect external monitor or TV via HDMI the computer is slow/lagging (even moving windows or doing a right click is slow).I tried to isolate the problem and it seems to happen only when I use "Second screen only" or when the laptop lid is closes, if the lid is open and I use "Extend" or "Duplicate" everything's fine. Also, if I do reset while the monitor is still connected, it's working ok (but this is not a good solution for me as I want to keep the work evniornment).I tried playing with Display settings but nothing seems to help, maybe the community can please help me?

Old computer is HP ProBook attached separately to a ViewSonic LED 1080p 22" monitor.  I use Extended Desktop mode with Built-In Monitor + Monitor.  Works great with Built-In Monitor at 1366x768 resolution and external monitor at 1920x1080
(and called VX2450 Series).  Roughly same size look, but the 22" monitor gives me great view on Excel Spreadsheets, etc.  New computer is an HP EliteBook and I can't the external monitor off this 'magnified' look.  Running the new computer
at 2560x1440 on the built-in monitor, and while the external monitor says 1920x1080, it looks magnified by 10 times or 20 times bigger.  Any ideas how to get the external monitor to be normal sized?  I like using the external for large spreadsheets.
 Thanks!

Hey Everyone! Trying to get an idea of what order to start throwing parts at this thing. Like the title says, my screen on the Yoga 2 Pro is blank. The computer boots and runs fine on an external monitor. I haven't pulled the bezel off the screen yet, but the video cable looks good on the mobo end. I am guessing I probably need to buy a new screen, but was wondering if I could have a cable issue before I spend $150 on a screen.  Couple of interesting things:In the device manager, only the external display is in the "Monitor" list. I don't have an option to mirror displays in the graphics properties or anything. My compupter just things there's one monitor, the external one.  I was having flickering issues leading up to the screen going out. Flickering only occured on battery.  Any thoughts?

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

Recently my Yoga has begun to not work very well with external monitors and USB-C docks. Specifically, if I am plugged into a dock with working external monitors, then remove the USB-C plug then plug it back in again, the external monitors will no longer display. This can often be fixed by shutting the laptop lid and opening it again. Sometimes this is just fixed randomly by waiting. Sometimes a reboot will fix it. Suspecting that it is an issue with the drivers, I have gone to the downloads page and downloaded "Intel Graphics Driver (Version 1709 or later)". When I attempt to install these drivers however I get the error message "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements to install this software". I get this when I try to install manually OR when I try to use the Thinkvantage software to update my computer. Not sure why my computer would not meet the minimum requirements if this is the download specifically for my computer. How can I still this software or fix my external monitor issue? Thanks!

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

I'm using a T430s and a mini dock plus series 3. This is the dock with the dual DVI, dual DisplayPort, 1x VGA. I do not use the laptop's built-in screen; just the 2 external monitors. They both worked fine. I upgraded to 2 24" monitors with a 1920x1200 resolution. The laptop is not recognizing the second monitor. I have tried:dual display port (dock side) to mini display port (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizeddual dvi (dock side) to HDMI (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizedI ruled out monitor and cable problems by swapping...each by itself works fine. A:Second monitor not detected: T430s with Mini Dock Plus Series 3 dual external monitor

Fixed; was a driver issue. Problem seems exclusive to a Dell u2415 on DP port 1 only of the dock or to the laptop's DP port (at least for the couple monitors I tried). It's possible it could affect other monitors. My starting point: 9.18.13.4535 / 9.17.10.2843 (Nvidia /  Intel) The latest driver from Lenovo is 9.18.13.4535 / 8.15.10.2725. I'm not sure how i have a slightly newer Intel, but that's what it was. I couldn't install the Lenovo driver. I also couldn't install a newer driver from Intel (10.18.10.4276). In both cases Windows or the Intel installer stopped me saying the mfr provided the drivers and that the installed version was up to date. I worked around by first rolling back the Intel driver. The manual (.zip) install of the latest intel driver worked. This immediately fixed the Dell u2415 on DP port 1 and laptop's built-in DP port.

I have a dell laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution. However, i connect it to an external monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution. Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen which is the secondary monitor.

My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

I'm not sure if I should have put this in "Hardware" or not so...
I am, by far, a professional at this so hang in there with me if I confuse you. A few months ago my children broke the screen on my laptop and for a few weeks I was trying to use the External Monitor so it would show up on a monitor my sister gave me. Well I finally got that up and working however, now when I connect my external hard drive to the laptop, it will not show up on the desktop monitor. (The external hard drive is Western Digital).

This external monitor is a new thing for me, actually I knew you could do it but didn't try it as an option until my nephew - who is much younger than me - thought of it lol. Anyway, I have pictures and such on my external hard drive that were put onto the external by the very laptop I am using. I'm not totally sure of the montior I am using, all I can tell you at the moment is it's a Dell. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A135 S266; the laptop has Vista Home Basic (32 bit) and I believe the desktop monitor is running with Vista too but I'm not sure if that's important since it is only serving as a "view." Anyway, I would love some help with why the drive may not be working with this set up.

Thanks,
Kerri

Hi, all, I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop and recently bought a Asus MB169B external USB monitor.  When I plug the monitor in, the laptop monitor (not the external monitor) flickers about every half second.  If I unplug it, it stops.  I upgraded my video driver to no avail.
Is it simply a power supply issue (the external monitor  does not have a power cord)?  Anything I can do?  It does it even if I have the laptop plugged in and charging.
*something interesting - I just discovered if I duplicate the display and not extend the flickering goes away...but that kind of defeats the point of a dual monitor for me.
Thanks.

Hi NATURAL1DAVE,
What is the exact system model?
Have you connected the external monitor to a dock or hub or directly to the system USB port?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download the BIOS, update and restart the machine and check.
Reinstall the video drivers and chipset drivers for the system from the above link and check.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hi, few days ago screen on my notebook Probook 6560b  with discreete GPU 6470M went black.  Monitor does not have any backlight and also there is no picture on it (looking at angle...so it is not faulty backlight). Pulled all devices out (HDD, CD-ROM) but monitor still remains blank (no BIOS screen). On external output (VGA or DP) there is pictrure, but it can not load any Windows (I have dualboot Windows 10 and WindowsXP). In Windows 10 shows error: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE What failed: atikmpag.sys. In Windows XP, also blue screen with error in atikmpag.sys. So, I booted in SafeMode and remove Radeon HR6470M driver and put Standard VGA driver. Now PC boots to OS, but still only on external monitor. Tried to reinstall drivers, but it always fails with blank screen and PC freeze. With some many tries and restarts, in one moment notebook monitor starts to working again. But only up to next Windows restart.I tried to put new HDD in it and install fresh Windows...but same thing. Booted from live linux distro...only external monitor works. So, as I can see, external monitors on VGA or DP can work but only with generic VGA drivers. OS correctly recognize graphic card, but when driver is installed external monitor also goes blank and windows freezes (not responding on caps/num lock, no longer pingable on network). As in one moment internal monitor went back online it seams that maybe is some bad connections...but where...GPU or video memory? Also tried HP diagnostic... The laptop our family shares recently had its monitor broken. It displays half of the screen, but will not stop shaking. I have it hooked up to an external monitor, but I am unable to use it to display the laptop screen without changing the display settings via the laptop. Is there some command I can use to set the external monitor to display the laptop screen? Or do I need to replace the laptop screen?

Hi All,
I have an external Envision flatscreen monitor that I have been using attached to my laptop for around a year. I have the monitor displaying on both laptop and the external Monitor. Just recently I had a pc issue which I have rectified and my external monitor since rectifying that issue now displays fuzzy. What can I troubleshoot to find out my issue. I've reviewed the Graphics and Display Properties. It is currently sitting at 1024 by 768, Color: True Color and Refresh 60HZ. The odd thing is that when I am in Display Properties, Settings tab, the left monitor in top is black (this should be my laptop) and the right monitor in the pic, which should be my external monitor is gr3y. When I have pressed on the black monitor, and press Identify it indicates 1. When I press on the grey monitor and press identify, it says it is not active, although I do have an image on my external monitor (fuzzy image). When I click the arrow on 'Extend my Windows Desktop this monitor' the right monitor then is black and when I press on it and press 'Identify' it says it is 1 as well. Is this correct. I know this has nothing to do with the fuzziness but still thought I might see if this is an issue or not.
When I right click on my desktop and go into Graphics Properties - I just get confused as to what this is all about. When I go into Display Tab the Monitor is checked, I can check on any of the others i.e. Notebook, Intel Dual display clone or Extended Desktop. Re... Read more

Hi, I have an old laptop that I have installed Puppy Linux on, it works fine except that my monitor doesn't work. So I plug in an external one, but its a bad setup because the laptop needs to be open. I was wondering if I could take the monitor off the laptop. Would the computer still work? The model is an old Toshiba 1100.
Thanks
Ned

When my laptop is plugged into an external monitor, the laptop screen is the "primary" display, where programs automatically open, etc. Is there a way to make the primary display not the laptop screen but the external monitor screen? Here's the catch--is there a way to do it *without looking at the primary monitor*?

I have this strange request because my laptop's screen recently died. I have connected an external monitor, and so can still use the computer--more or less. The problem is that I can't see my start menu, etc--they are all on the laptop screen, ie, the dead one.

I know, normally, how to switch the display: I would right click on the desktop and select "personalize," then "display" But when I do this, it opens the display in the primary monitor (the broken laptop monitor) and I can't see it to change the settings. It's a sad catch 22.

If anyone could help me with this is would REALLY appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi nomonitor, and welcome to TSG

Check your user manual for the laptop to see if has has a special key or a Function key that lets you toggle between the internal display and external monitor.

My external monitor works but it just recently started doing something weird. It might be the VGA Cable but I'm not sure. It's visible enough that if you compared my laptop screen towards my external screen you would see this like tiny tiny tiny tiny (emphasizing tiny) like white flickers. Some what moving up and down the screen. It's like almost if your VGA cable was just slightly not all the way in. I've wiggled the cabled replugged both ends. Turned my laptop off, the screen off. Reset the screen settings. Everything and I still see it. Is my VGA Cable going bad or my monitor?

If you really want to be sure either take the monitor to a repair shop and try with a cable there or get another cable, I would try the former though.

So basically i've been pulling my hair out over the past few days over a problem. My main monitor is broke (black running down 1/3 of the screen) but still useable. Anyway i have another monitor that i can use however it only has one slot for input. We'll call it input A.

The screen that is broke has input A and input B but the COMPUTER that i'm using only has output B.

I have no wires that are A to be, only B to B (what i'm using with my current monitor) and A to A so this is what i've tried:

Connecting one monitor literally to another but to no avail. It does say "in power save mode, please press any button on the keyboard" etc on the secondary monitor which is promising because at least it's connected however not recognized when i go to desktop: properties etc.

I know it's probably a lost cause but any help would be appreciated. Sorry if i made my post confusing, its hard to explain.

I have a Dell Latitude D610 laptop running XP Pro SP3.

In the past, I could plug an LCD monitor into the laptop's video port and either replicate or extend the desktop using the blue Fn and CRT/LCD keys.

Now I can't get an external monitor to work. I've tried two LCD monitors that work on other PC's, so I think the problem is in the D610.

The external monitor function stopped working when I was attempting to get an LCD monitor to work that had a different native resolution that the laptop was set to. I don't know if that was coincidence or I messed up some software settings or there was a hardware failure in the laptop . . . or something else.

Any advice or thoughts as to what I might do to get the external monitor going again? Or verify a hardware failure?

Thanks.

Steve

I have an old all in one Hitachi Vision Desk 2600 series computer with Win2000Pro OS.

New tower computer uses a 21" external LCD monitor.

Have no trouble attaching old computer to new monitor as the Hitachi has an external VGA port, but both monitors are then on.

The Bios has only two display choices:
1. Auto - This makes both monitors work
2. Inboard - This makes only the small monitor work even though external is attached.

I want to turn off small monitor permanently and use only the large one. Is there any way to do this without opening the case and detaching the monitor (if this is even possible)?

Thanks

My computer will not switch to my external (DELL) monitor when I turn on my laptop. The screen comes on briefly and then switches to the laptop screen.
I cannot switch with Fn-F5.

I have an Acer Aspire 3620 Laptop.Do I need to reinstall the display driver?

It stays on when I run diagnostics. (Test screens)

First off.
I'm not a expert/moderator/tech!

Have you tried opposite clicking in a open area of your desktop, clicking the properties button, then clicking the settings tab and tried changing your monitor configuration.

Also if this is not the fix (highly likely), try using your internet's search engine to search for how to connecting a external monitor to a laptop.
Hope to have helped

I hooked up my laptop with s-video to my HDTV but the screen is choppy and gray, I know it works because I have done this on my old tv. Also when I wiggle the S-video wire the screen flickers and shows full color then goes back to grey. I know it's not the wire because I have hooked other components with it. what is the problem?

If you've tried another cable, it's obviously one of the connections, since it appears to be a physical connection issue.
