wrong Alpha dog on network of 3

Q: wrong Alpha dog on network of 3

Sorry if this has been addressed, I'm just too tired of trying to figure this out. My main computer (supposedly) is a desktop running Vista Home Premium 64 bit. The other two are a lap top and another desktop both running Vista Home Basic 32 bit.
My grandson who usually is very good on machines set me up between the lap top and my HP desktop that's running the 64 bit. Now I find out the laptop is the Alpha leader and not my desktop. Can this be changed. We couldn't set up the third one as Santa hadn't delivered it yet. I now can't connect to the internet on the desktop but can on the laptop. Help if you can Plese.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Avira Antivirus Pro - Network Protection Alpha
As a result of the feedback we've received through the Avira Beta Center and Support for our Avira Web Protection module in the past we've decided to redo the module.

Those are the improvements and features added with the new Avira Network Protection Alpha
Scan HTTP traffic on all ports
Unlimited numbers of parallel connections
Improved performance
Reduced resource footprint
Improved technical handling of whitelisted connections
A number of people here in the Beta Center and customers had problems while browsing the internet and received so called "whitepages" we hope to resolve this issue with the alpha version as well.

Test instructions
Please be aware that this is a alpha version which has been tested thoroughly by our QA and development but does not have the same quality as a beta or released product. Errors or data loss may occur!
Uninstall previous Avira Antivirus versions on your system before you install this alpha build!
Technically speaking this is the latest "Antivirus Pro" beta version where the web protection module has been replaced.
Please use the attached "Avira_Antivirus_Pro.key" beta license when you are asked for it during the installation dialog ("I already have a valid license file")
Due to the very high version number, this build will never reach beta or RTM status. In order to proceed with beta testing afterwards you need to uninstall this version firs... Read more

OK,

EDITED to provide more detail!

So I have a home network Ö in essence a server (2003) and some clients (XP Pro) which are configured as an AD domain. On that network I also have several devices specifically an HP Jet Direct print server with a Laser Printer on it and a broadband router.

IPís are as follows:

Router: xxx.01
Server: xxx.02
Jet Direct: xxx.33
DHCP Clients: xxx.65 to xxx.254Click to expand...

The Server:
The server (2003) handles DNS and DHCP, DNS was installed when I created the domain controller (DCPROMO) and configured afterwards to forward to the OpenDNS servers on the internet (it's a small network so I haven't configured any reverse lookups), the server's own DNS is configured to point to itself. DHCP supplies IP, gateway & DNS settings to all clients and the server acts as file and print as well as the one and only DC. To my knowledge the server cannot resolve or ping any client on the network

The Clients:
Mostly XP Pro (some Linux) get DHCP supplied IP addresses (client IP's range from xxx.254) as well as gateway (router, xxx.01) & DNS (server, xxx.02). All clients have home folder connected automatically but I manually configure other shares and printers (I'm sure it could be done via domain policy). All clients can resolve and ping the server, access shares and printers, they can ping the router and have full access to the internet (browse, MSN, mail etc.). I haven't tested them all but to my knowledge n... Read more

Hey guys;

I have Shaw Cable high speed internet. I use ethernet cable to connect my modem to the computer. Now, all the sudden the light "PC Activity" on the modem is off. Also the light behind network card (which shows that the ethernet wire is connected properly) is off. Good thing is that Shaw's modem can be connected through USB cable, so I am able to connect to the internet. So, what do you guys think is wrong with my network card. Do you guys think it is burnt? I can't open my pc at this time, but I will try to check it tomorrow. Help guys;

Something, is wrong with my home network.

What happens? Every so often (5-10 times per day) our internet will slow to snail pace. So slow that my browsers cannot even load anything. Instead it shows up as though there is no internet at all. Sometimes, there is no internet at all. To fix this, I reset either the modem, or the modem and the router. It usually works.

What its NOT?! I called Comcast to make sure it wasn't something at there end. They troubleshooted with me, and had me plug one of my computer directly into the modem. It would perfectly.

Then I tested our router. I have one that I use at college, so I plugged that one in instead. It did nothing to change the problem.

I tested my wireless connection, and all of the wired connections (between computers and router, and between router and modem). NOTHING will fix the problem!!!

When the internet gives out on my laptop (Vista) I'll run the diagnosis. Usually it comes back saying there is no problem with the internet, or to reset my wireless router. Obviously this isn't helpful. Sometimes though, it tells me to rest my router (duh) and even less often it will tell me that it cannot find the DNS. I've tried to find more information about this problem, but from what I've read, it basically means it cannot connect to the internet...

Anyway, this is really frustrating. I don't enjoy resetting my router and modem several times a day.

Hello,

I was mucking with the internal IP addresses of my home network and as part of doing so I changed the routers default IP from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.0 but the router would not reboot so I closed the brower and reset the router using the little hidden reset button.

So now the router is back to its default internal IP address but Zone Alarm's firewall zone entry for "new network" still says 192.168.1.0 and Im sure thats why the our connection is blocked from time to time.
Does anybody know how to correct the IP address of the active network?

Thanks in advance.

I just performed a clean install of win 8.1 (I couldn't take win 10 fonts anymore). All went fine but because I hadn't loaded Dell drivers yet, my wired internet wasn't working. So in order to connect with Dell and download drivers, I connected to my wireless.

No problem -- internet access worked fine and I was able to update all my Dell drivers. This caused my wired internet access to start working. It appears that the system made the wired connection my network (which I wanted) but it is still keeping my wireless router as the network name.

For example, if I display network connections, it shows Wi-Fi none; Wired Ethernet <name of my wireless router>

Is there anyway I can change that name??

Hi folks,
I have just now taken on the task of creating a shared folder off of an old and hardly-ever-used external hard drive I have so that my parents can have a local, centralized place to store and save things to. I want only my laptop (running windows 7), my father's laptop (running Vista), and my mother (going to be running 7), and of course my desktop considering the drive is connected over there to be able to do anything with the contents of the files inside of the shared folder. I used the network share wizard under computer management to create the share, however, my laptop can see the network location, (called Katherine-desk), but the share seems to be unavailable to it considering I got the error message "Windows cannot access the network." What did I do wrong? By the way, I changed some of the configuration in the properties of computer, namely, I changed it so that my desktop is on a network without a domain, and I also changed it from home to work network. Anything out of place there? And isn't the folder supposed to show up in my drives list considering it is stored on a 500 GB external drive? Any help or input on this would be excellent. Thanks so much.

We have a 10/100 wired Lan run thru a hub and are using a linksys router/hub and cards. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, one computer has stopped being able to access the network.

After removing and reinstalling all network adapters with no success, I ran winipcfg. It shows only one thing - PCI Bus Master - with an IP address of 169.254.108.32. Our network runs on the 192.168.0.0 range of numbers. All cards are set to obtain ip automatically and use the tcp/ip protocol. I could not seem to release and renew and I could not find a drop down option for any network adapter.

The motherboard installs onboard sound and lan drivers which show up in the system device manager and network panel. Sound definitely doesn't work and we disabled it and put in a pci sound card some time ago. I also see a lan adapter there but there is no port for it. We installed a linksys pci adapter card which also showed up. Both seem to want irq 11. I disabled the onboard one since it doesn't seem to be doing anything anyway.

I've run norton internet security and came up only with an unremovable "threat" called mediaticketsinstaller.ocx (an adaware.cdt threat). I am trying to find information on that. Not sure if it could have anything to do with my pc not access the network or not. Spybot and adaware are my next options. Any suggestions? How likely is it the card is toast?

Thanks

My Network Places list is inaccurate. When I go to Network Places, I see PC's that are no longer on my network and I don't see other pc's that are connected. I am using WinXP Home. If I vew Network Places from one of the other WinXP pc's, I get a different views. See network_places_Den and network_places_Elyse pics attached. Network Places from one of the other WinXP pc's is different than the first two. The Den PC is wired, the Elyse PC is wireless and the 3rd PC is wired.

If I view the workgroup pc's, all are shown correctly. If I view Network Places from a Vista PC, the view is correct. I see the correct pc's and the folders are correct if I select a PC to view.

My network is comprised of a AirLink101 Wireless router with 3 of the pc's directly connected to it. I also have a Netgear FS105 5 port switch with 3 pc's connected to it and it is connected to the AirLink101. Two of the pc's are wireless. One is WinXP (Elyse attached) and the other is Vista.

This appears to be a WinXP issue.

I would appreciate any insight on this anomaly. For what it is worth, I rebooted the pc's before I took these screen shots.

Chuck

A:[SOLVED] Network Places View Wrong

My Network Places is basically a Recent Documents folder, but for network locations. It does not show a current view of your network, it a list of places you have opened or saved a document to in the past, so it can show places from networks/PCs you are no longer connected too, or that no longer exist.
Shortcuts are usually created only when you open or save a file using a UNC path (\\Server\Share\Filename) unless you've set a policy to prevent their creation.
So it won't show the same locations that you see on other PCs unless you've actually opened or saved a file from those same locations using a UNC path. If you map a drive to a share, shortcuts are not created for that location.

See the NoRecentDocsNetHood entry in this KB article (about 1/2 way down):
Policy settings for the Start menu in Windows XP

You can delete the ones you no longer want, they are not automatically deleted.
You can add one using the Add a network place link on the left.

Hi there,

I am having some strange issues regarding my ethernet network adapter. I run a windows 7 x64 and I am currently running a Intel (r) 82579V gigabit network adapter. The thing is, the driver was made for 82579LM and V versions. Most of the time, my computer reads the adapter as the LM version, in which the ethernet just won't work. Once in a while it gets the V version and everything is alright, but i can't live with such uncertainty. Mostly people suggest i should just buy a new motherboard (?) or a new network adapter, but i'm sure it's a software problem. Shouldn't there be other solutions? The card itself is integrated.

If you guys need anymore info, please feel free to let me know. I am really desperate to get this solved!

Hi there
Recently I discovered my Inspiron 620, which was running Win 7 OOTB and in the last couple of years has been upgraded to Win10, could not detect my wireless network at home, or those in the nearby area, yet my phone and tablet are able to connect to them.
I couldn't see anything immediately obvious, and tried re-installing the network drivers off support.dell.com however they're Windows 7 drivers, and complain that they're not designed for this OS (meaning Windows 10).   Will Dell be producing Win10 compatible drivers soon, and in the meantime is there a workaround so that i can get my computer back on the 'net?
It's not a hardware fault as the computer is able to connect to my wireless network if I run Linux off a USB stick plugged into it.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated...
Regards
Kevin

A:Network drivers for Inspiron 620 say wrong OS (Win 7 but running Win 10)

Dell won't be providing Win 10 drivers for the Inspiron 620. System is  too old...
If you open Device Manager, is the WiFi network card entry marked with a ! or X?
After you upgraded to Win 10, did you run the network connection wizard on the 620 to identity your WiFi network and did you enter the (WPA2) network password on the 620 to allow it to connect to the router?
Have you rebooted the router (and modem)?
Do you have the Dell (Atheros) 1502 WiFi card? If none of the above helps, you might try installing this Win 10 driver for the 1502 card. Be sure to manually set a System Restore point first, to be safe. Keep in mind this driver is for an Alienware system and I have no idea if it will work with an Inspiron.
Worse/worse, remove the existing WiFi card and replace it with an inexpensive WiFi card or plug in a USB>WiFi dongle that's compatible with Win 10...

I took my old desktop which had a direct connect to a DSL modem and setup it up for as the family computer with wireless access (it has internet access just fine). I changed its computer-name from Shawn (under System, Advanced settings) to "family" so that I could use the same name (Shawn) for my new desktop (which connects via ethernet to the DSL wireless modem).

I can see the old desktop from the new desktop under network in explorer on the new desktop. So i have "Shawn" (new) and "Shawn-PC" (old) but I cannot log in via wireless to the old computer. The old has the new login name "family" but I understand the network only goes by the original computer name? But "Shawn" or "Shawn-PC" does not get me in.

I never changed the password on the old desktop but I did turn it off. But even using the old password does not work.

How can I get access to the shared files on the old (shawn-renamed-family) computer from my new desktop?

Thanks

win 7 SP1 64x

A:Cannot log into home network computer: name or password wrong

To access the machine using the user account 'Family' you would enter the following at that prompt:

SHAWN-PC\Family

Then enter the password for that account on the old machine.

   Tip
It is advised to use an Administrator account when providing credentials. For example Family should be a system Administrator

My apologies if I misinterpreted your problem. You could remove all authentication procedures by going to network and sharing centre > Change Advanced Sharing Settings and then turning off Password Protected Sharing

Hope This Helps,

So when transferring files from one pc to another using copy and paste, why does it only say 2-3 maybe 5-6 or so..

Iím using windows vista, but itís the same in XP when I was using it. I share a folder on network, browse to this shared folder using another PC on the network (same workgroup) and i copy and paste say a 600mb file. The transfer speed reports (in vista. xp donít have this feature) that its around 3mb/s or so, whatever it says, itís not "what it should be" regardless if its 100mbit(10MB/S) or gbit(100MB/s) network.

Now on the advanced config of the network adapter there are various settings that control the network adapter. Does one of these determine the overall speed or the transfer? Maybe a firewall or router is slowing the transfer; therefore a port should be opened? is so what port? Or are speeds slow due to windows..but where can I find information about such a bug, i mean iv looked and looked.

maybe Iím just not googleing the right thing

so anyway if someone knows anything that could help me speed up the transfer of data between two pc's on a windows network, It would be a great help.

I had a manual IP & DNS in my network TCP/IP settings and so I decided to go back to automatic settings and let my Linksys give me a local IP. Problem is that when I did that then I couldnt access the internet. I could access the Linksys control panel but not the internet.

So I manually put in a DNS entry which is the address of my Linksys and then I can browse, but the browsing is still very slow.

I am not sure what to do.. any thoughts?

I'd like to get the automatic IP & DNS, and have the lightning fast speed which I used to have..

Thanks-

John

Windows detects my Ricoh AC104 on a wireless network but insists it's an HP 5Si MX and installs that driver. When it adds the printer, it loads the driver automatically and without choice or prompt. Perhaps the misidentification has something to do with the printer driver in between (Hawking HMPS1U). I need to force it to use the printer driver from Ricoh, but I've had no luck so far. Some things I've tried:

1. There's an installation program with the Ricoh driver, but it doesn't see the printer on a wireless network.

2. Going to the advanced options for the printer on the device manager, I can see the driver info but Windows will not permit changes. I tried as Administrator also. No difference.

3. Attempting to update the driver just leads to Windows telling me the (wrong) driver is up to date.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A:Autoloads wrong driver for printer on wireless network.

Got to Devices and Printers and try the Add Printer option. If that works and you can get it setup correctly, you can then delete the other incorrect one.

I recently changed my motherboard to an ASUS Maximus VI Hero and am unable to connect to my home network through a wired connection. It says 'Unidentified Network, No Network Connection.'
When I set the IP address to set automatically it gives me:IP: 169.254.136.172
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

I've tried enabling/disabling the network adapter driver, reinstalling the driver and setting a static IP. None of them worked. Is there a setting in the bios for this motherboard that I'm missing or is it just bad hardware and requires a replacement?

Any help is appreciated.

Sometimes when I start up my PC, my internet won't work because the wrong driver is being loaded.

This is the driver that sometimes loads up 82579LM"

Then when I do a "scan for hardware change", it'll load up the correct driver and my internet will start working 82579V:

This happens with the default driver that Windows 8 installs and the one from Intel's website as well:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...&DownloadType=

I know this is a Windows 8 problem because this didn't happen on Windows 7.

If it happens again then before rescan, just right click and uninstall it with delete option.

Hello guys...

I am posting my solution to a problem often found on Windows 7 and caused by not-so well written drivers/software stacks. My problem started after installing the BlueSoleil Bluetooth stack, as the Wireless icon showed that netwroks were available, instead of that I am actually connected to one.

Uninstalling device drivers, BlueSoleil and restarting did not help.

The root of the problem appears to be a non plug-and-play driver, which is unaffected by disabling/removing hardware drivers: "Virtual WiFi Filter Driver".

To fix the problem do the following:
-Open "Device Manager".
-Click on "View" and tick "Show hidden devices".
-Find and expand the "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" tree.
-Open the "Virtual WiFi Filter Driver"
-Click on the "Driver" tab and then "Stop".

After doing this, you will immediately notice how the wireless icon displays properly. You do not need to unisntall the driver, as it is a Windows service and will be re-enabled automatically.

If that does not work for you, you may want to try to stop some other of the WiFi drivers listed in the "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" list.

Hi,

I have a Netgear WN111 USB wireless adaptor on my PC (802.11n NIC).

It works fine with my WiFi network, but it always displays the wrong icon in the System Tray when connected. It shows the signal bars greyed out, with a yellow star on top.

I have tried a Windows update on the driver, but Windows (7 ultimate) says it's using the latest driver.

Netgear only have a Vista driver for this NIC, tried this to no avail, same problem.

I have no other NICs enabled on the box (wired Ethernet port disabled in BIOS and nothing in Device Manager).

I have googled this issue and I'm not alone (and it's not just Netgear NICs affected). However all the solutions say remove & re-install the device. Done this, and it's made no difference.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks & regards,

Jock in a Frock

A:Wireless network - System Tray icon wrong

If a re-install is the fix, you may need to do a complete re-install. That is uninstall the software, then delete all the .DLL and .SYS files the uninstall leaves. Then delete the .INF and .CAT files, remove all Registry entries for this NIC. Reboot several times and double check everything is gone. You might need to check if there is a special service running for this NIC if there is you will need to disable the service, reboot, delete the registry keys, and then delete all the files for the service. I would reboot and double check again. Once you are sure it is gone. Then on a CLEAN boot, Don't open any programs and if anything starts automaticly like Yahoo Chat etc. Exit it and all other programs. Then re-install the NIC. That should get it. -WS

I have a 20mbps upload with my ISP and I'm getting around 18.5 consistently. I've started using Zoolz for backing up and I have been assured it does not throttle the bandwidth. It reports it is uploading at around 15-16mbps which would be absolutely fine but Task Manager and NetSpeedMonitor show the upload speed as considerably lower.

I've attached a screenshot showing the difference but I was wondering if Task manager and NetSpeedMonitor could be wrong at all? It seemed quite coincidental that the speed reported by Zoolz was roughly what I would expect. Is there any sort of traffic that wouldn't show with Task Manager?

I've sent log files off to support but I don't want to bug them too much if it's actually some sort of Windows glitch. Any insight appreciated.

A:Can Task Manager report completely wrong network speed?

Task manager only reports what the adapter is capable of. What you are seeing is the Cloud app average speed in Task manager for Zoolz. The speed in the Dashboard is probably going off of what your ISP average speed to that connection is.

Without knowing what router manufacturer & model, how you are connecting to the network, who your ISP is. Really just taking shots in the dark here.

Hello there.

I'm having a problem with a Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit install that is almost vanilla, I've only installed the drivers, a browser and some minimal things.

The machine connects via pppoe to the internet, and it never really worked properly, the first problem is Windows doesn't detect when it's connected to the internet, sometimes I'm browsing the web and the 'dial up' dialog will pop up, and also, the yellow mark on the tray icon is always there.

Another problem I'm having is that every time I connect to the internet Windows create a new "isatap tunnel adapter", so at the moment they're almost 400 what's really annoying when you run ipconfig and I suspect it's not only related but a symptom of a bad configuration.

I wasn't really caring for the problems since I don't use the machine often and until now it was only an annoyance that was very rare to happen, but I need to install VirtuaBox in that machine now and I think the misconfiguration is somehow affecting that, because it will fail to install informing that it was not able to stop the iphlpsvc service, which is related to networking, so I think that somehow is linked to the whole network configuration problem.

I would like to solve these issues, specially the internet connection detection problem (so Windows knows when I'm connected) and most importantly the VirtualBox problem. I've tried to skip that message (by clicking retry twice) and also manually disabling the service, but when I do th... Read more

Hello ... I have a flash drive attached to my Netgear wireless router that I make backups to and transfer files to and from other computers at home. It was formatted as NTFS and set up in the router about 2 weeks ago. I just noticed yesterday that all the folders in the drive have dates of 2003 -- even new folders I created today. The files inside all seem to be fine, with correct dates.

I am positive the drive did not start out this way. It was functioning normally. Does anyone know what could have caused these weird folder dates and how to prevent this from happening in the future? Is there any way to fix this? Could the backup program I am using be causing this problem? It is Syncback and it is doing automated backups to this drive.

The computer I am using is a new Asus T300 Chi with Windows 8.1.

Any ideas? I am stumped.

--Pat

A:Folders on a network attached drive show wrong date

It probably isn't the drive but the Router. You may have to enter the Router setup while connected via Ethernet cable and check the date. Check the documentation for the address to use in your browser, something along the line of 192.168.1.1, the last two numbers will vary between brands and maybe between models.

Hi there,

If this bothers you although you are connected to the network and internet you may try to uninstall/reinstall the device driver from your computer's device manager if you have not done this yet.

I have a small wireless network and i set encryption to WPA instead of WEP for tighter security but I kept having problems with a couple of the pc's not going online and at other times all 4 didn't find each other. I tried WEP but it's not as safe as WPA and it didn't work well either. I heard of a product called Alpha Shield. I checked it out and bought it. Now, it's a firewall, blocks all 3rd party pop-ups, makes your pc invisible to hackers, stops MS Blast, My Doom and similar worms and has 100% guaranteed security. With everything it does, isn't my wireless network as safe as it would be if I had WEP or WPA encryption working?
Thanks,Jim

A:Alpha Shield

No. Alphashield is simply protecting the PC's, not the wireless network itself. Without WEP/WPA, anyone can get on your wireless network and connect to the internet through your router. ie. you're providing essentially free internet access to anyone within about 100 feet of your house.

If you don't care, then you're fine with just using that product.

FWIW, I don't think the problem you were experiencing was a WPA/WEP problem. I'd guess it may have been a shared key problem, or some other firewall (XP's built in firewall?) problem.

I just found this [link] and decided to post it. FireFox's 3.7 Alpha 5 lets you throw your tabs on the top of the browser window, right below the title bar, like Chrome. I've been wanting Mozilla to do that for a while now. xD

A:FireFox 3.7 Alpha

It's looking good so far, but they really need to remove the title bar for it to be on par w/ Chrome. Tabs on top AND flush w/ top of screen when maximized is what makes the feature great in Chrome (allows less precise clicking, if you're like me & don't switch tabs using key shortcuts).
