CMD: Copy files that are listed in a text file.

Q: CMD: Copy files that are listed in a text file.

Situation: I have the simple CMD(DOS) .bat below that i am using to scan networked computers for specific files that need to be overwritten. When the file is found, its path is appended to the resutls log (MS08-070_compname.txt). I am trying to figure out how to read that results log to automatically overwrite those files with the updated files.

Limits: Cannot use any third-party software, cannot use GPO, pretty much can't use much else than the DOS CLI basically. A HUGE! annoyance, trust me, I know. I am quite aware of how old the DOS CLI is and that there are much better tools out there, I just simply cannot use them due to implemented network limitations.

Thanks in advance for any help provided!

Preferred Solution: CMD: Copy files that are listed in a text file.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi. I have a question I think the answer is a lost cause, but I really need help. I  didn't know which forum to post this in, but I'm asking that it be moved by administrators wherever needed, but I need assistance. I use a screen reader. It is something that reads to me because of my low vision. OK? Well, I need to copy text on a PDF file  but when I select text and then right click I don't have the option to copy, Pressing Ctrl/C isn't going to do a bleep thing. So, I need to do this. Not for stupid copyright violation, but because otherwise, this file is useless, and I'm requred to read this. Is it even possible to take care of this? ITS VERY IMPORTANt. Here's this link I'm tring to copy the text off of.

Can anyone tell me how to copy file names in Windows Explorer as a text list so I can paste them into a Word or Excel document? I have many home video files that were named, by default, as the date & time of recording and usually contain 14 digits, e.g., 20120310145034. I want to rename them (by adding additional details) but I also want to be able to manipulate (sort or print) the list. Obviously I don't want to retype each one of the numbered files.

A:Is there a way to copy file names as text?

Hi ircool and welcome to the Forum.
Try this, right click on the file name in Win Expl and click "Properties" should open in General tab. Then just highlight the file name and press Ctrl + C. Open your chosen program and Press Ctrl + V at the curser position and the should do what you need. Of course this means doing each file separately

If it is a CorelDraw image within this pdf, then you will need to use a OCR program to convert from a image to text.

I noticed this change a month or two ago. When in Photoshop, Dreamweaver, or several other apps, and from within the program I'm trying to open a file or link to one (in Dreamweaver's case), they're now listed by filesize (instead of by name) in the folder. Obviously this makes it hard to find the one I'm looking for.

When I manually select "Arrange Icons by... Name", it re-sorts them but resets every time I'm in the "Select/Open File" dialogue again. Browsing folders through Windows Explorer from My Computer does not have this problem - files are sorted correctly - only in applications does this come up. Have tried setting Sort By Filename as the default, but can't get anything to stick.

Never seen this happen before, and it's getting fairly aggravating as it's a frequent task in my workday. Any ideas what the problem could be?

PS - I should note that this is not the virus-infected computer in my other recent post - that's my laptop. This desktop is totally clean as far as I know, have scanned with multiple programs and aside from this problem there's no unusual behavior.

Thanks in advance...

A:Files being listed by filesize (instead of by name) in applications' "Select File" windows

I've seen this phenomenon...and I think it's only with music/graphics/video-editors which I have installed.

I've assumed that chkdsk /r needed to be run on my C: and that's been followed by normal behavior. May not work for you, but no harm in trying it.

My last episode with this was 72 hours ago .

I have so many films and music, how do i compile a list of them into a text file or some other format for catalogue use? , i hate using catalogue software.

A:How to compile a text file or similar regarding files?.

If you are talking about mp3s, the free mp3utility application can quickly generate a txt file of all mp3s in a certain directory.

You can leave that txt file in that format or import it into Excel for more sorting capabilities.

I'm sure you can do something similar from a command prompt.

I know there are solutions for this on this forum but I can't get any of them to work in my specific situation.

I have a program that cannot deal with ZIP files and I need to manually sort them out. What I can do is export a partial location for these ZIP files to a txt files so I have:

filelist.txt:
folder\file.zip
folder\file2.zip
...
filder\fileN.zip

What I want to be able to do is create a batch file that will read the location of these files and copy them to a folder. The files are located on a network share but they r are mapped in My Computer. I can modify to the txt file so it gives the full path as a UNC path or a hard path.

I've been trying to get it to work using a For In Do statement but I don't know if that's the best solution. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Dilo.

Hi everybody

I need help for reading data from text files and saving it under different columns in the excel file using vba macro.

For example: I have many text files in the following format

File 1:
1 2 3 4
1 3 5 7
1 3 1 8

File 2:
1 2 3 4
1 3 5 7
1 3 1 8

In excel file the above files should be saved one below the other seperated by the name of the text file, in seperate coumns as found in the text file.

I found an example online but it saves the data under a single column only. I tried changing it to my requirement, but I couldn't. I have attached the example that I found online.

I had a folder from my documents and i placed it into the director of my 2gb thumb/flash drive and it said it moved, then at the end it said that it couldn't move the folder. I just watched it move all these files to the drive that are now gone, just because the folder itself wouldn't move. Any help or ideas will be appreciated, Thank you.

A:File copy/move fail, now files gone?

It should have created a copy...I usually don't pay attention to such, but I think that's what happens.

The files are either moved, copied...or in one location or both.

They don't just disappear, unless one of your drives is defective.

Try running chkdsk /r on the flash drive.

I've just bought a new laptop and I need to move my personal files from the old one to the new one. I've tried several methods, but they all give me problems with certain files: some files (and I have not been able to find any pattern here) will simply not copy over.

What I've done:
Move files onto an external USB drive and then copy them onto the new laptop.
Take out the old HDD and connect it to the USB port of my new laptop.

In both cases there are files that request admin permission before starting to copy, but the admin permission of my new laptop does not work for those files.

How can I get all my files on my new laptop with as little hassle as possible and without losing any files?

P.S. I did not set any special file permissions for any of the files and it looks like most of the files that won't copy over came from email or forum attachments, support downloads from hardware manufacturers etc. This has me even more puzzled since these files are supposed to be shared and should copy over without any problems...

Hi all,

To increase our backup solutions, we have decided to backup our SQL database every hour to a folder within the C drive (we couldn't get it to backup straight to a USB drive). So now we need a way (batch file best solution?) to copy these files to the USB drive, lets say every 1.05hours just after they've been created?

Maybe we could copy the entire folder every hour and delete old backups that are in this folder and to the new place for the backups. (although I guess it won't work as it'll have the same folder name once it has been copied).

Or copy the individual files to that new folder although with this they have all different names so is it possible to copy the newest file to the new folder and then after this delete the old backups from a certain time frame?

Big thanks for your help!

Code:
REM Creates a Backup of files every hour
@echo off
:start
XCOPY <source path> <destination path> /w /f /-y
TIMEOUT /t 3600 /nobreak
goto start
This might work, I'm no expert by any means, but the batch file should copy all the files, and then pause for a hour, and then loop back to the start and complete the same process again.

Here's what the XCOPY switches mean - http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d....mspx?mfr=true

Hello All,

I am looking for something to help me in my work. I have to keep line counts in text and CSV files in a log. I was wondering if it was possible to do this with a batch file?

Here is what i would like for it to do:
Open the DOS window in XP.
Drag the Bat file to the dos window
Drag the file needing to be counted to the same window(or copy the network address), click enter
and have a line count

Currently I use KEdit to get this information from the status bar (size) but thought a batch file might be easier (and quicker).

Can someone help me?

Tannks a bunch

A:Solved: Batch File for Counting Lines in Text or CSV files

Did some Googling around, never really thought of doing this in a batch file. I found a VBscript alternative you might be able to use from command line though.

http://www.computing.net/answers/programming/batch-getting-the-number-of-lines/15728.html

here's a vbscript alternative:

Code:

Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set objArgs = WScript.Arguments
myFile = objArgs(0)
Set objFile = objFSO.OpenTextFile(myFile,1)
Do Until objFile.AtEndOfLine
line = objFile.Line
objFile.ReadLine
Loop
WScript.Echo "Line count of", myFile , "is", line

usage:
cscript myscript myfile

The link above is the link to the page where I found this information, wanted to give credit where credit is due. With this script you could just call the script and give it the parameter my file from command line. If you really wanted a batch, you could easily create a batch that echo's each of those lines into a temp.vbs, calls the temp.vbs with a parameter %myfile using the "cscript myscript myfile" command then "del temp.vbs" at the end. Seems very redundant and pointless though.

Hope the VBS helps you.

Hi my friend,
Everyday a lot of new text files are created in a specific directory by an electronic invoice software. Nobody know why but in the end of the file there are a lot of blank spaces and it is causing a lot of problems when we're going to process all of them.

So I'd like to ask if somebody could help me to create a batch to remove double (or more) blank spaces from the files.

Hello everyone,

Take it easy on me, i am a total noobie

I have a simple WPF App in C# that exports data from SQL to individual .TXT files. It works great except it dumps all the data in one single directory. I am trying to figure out how to have it create the TXT files in a different directory every Nth file.

For example - if i have 100,000 text files it dumps them in one DIR and ideally i would like it to create 100 files and then increment the DIR .

So it would do something like
C:\txtdumps\text001 (100 txt files)
C:\txtdumps\text002 (100 txt files)
C:\txtdumps\text003 (100 txt files)
C:\txtdumps\text004 (100 txt files)
C:\txtdumps\text005 (100 txt files)
C:\txtdumps\text006 (100 txt files)
C:\txtdumps\text007 (100 txt files)
and so on.

any suggestions on how i can accomplish this?

This is what it basically looks like:

Code:

{
FileName = rdr.GetString(0);
text = rdr.GetString(1);
if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(text)) continue;
filePath = filePathOut + FileName.ToString() + ".txt";
if (!System.IO.File.Exists(filePath))
{
using (sw = new StreamWriter(filePath))
{
sw.Write(text);
sw.Flush();
sw.Close();
}

You have all the pieces, just need to append filepathout with the appropriate increment when the condition is met.

Edit: If this is going to be a continuous thing you'll need to get a count of files in the latest directory.

I want to write a batch file that do this for me:

- copies files and folders from a TEST directory to above destination,
- copies only new (or modified) files from the TEST directory to a separate folder.

Any Idea?

A:a simple batch file for copy files and folders

To create a directory with the date and time as the name, In a batch file use:

set DirName=%date:~-4,4%.%date:~-7,2%.%date:~0,2%.%time:~0,2%.%time:~3,2%
MD \%DirName%

Then in the same batch file use robocopy to copy files to the new directory

robocopy TEST %DirName% /e

you need to add your own paths and read the robocopy help for the right switches you need.
By default Robocopy copies only files that don't exist in the target directory but because you are creating a new directory every time it will copy every thing in TEST

You could use the /A switch which only copies files with the Archive attribute set.

Hi guys,

I have a folder with 995 files in it and I'd like to give someone a text file with a list of all these files in it. Is there a way that I can get the command line to send the names of these files to a text file?

I tried navigating to the directory and using the DIR command and, sure enough it gives me a list but I am unable to copy and paste it to a textfile myself for some reason.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Windows XP user who can open PDF files on our secondary file server (e.g. \\serverB\shares\marketing\file.pdf) but not from the main server (\\serverA\shares\marketing\file.pdf). Same with copying PDF files. He can
copy them to his desktop. from server B but not from server A. Server A is the one assigned to him because server B is being pre-seeded for DFS and is in a different office anyway.

The problem is only with PDF files. He can open and copy any other files. And it's only on his Windows XP machine. His Windows 7 machine works just fine (he can copy and open PDF files from server A).

The two servers (Windows 2016) are set up identically as far as NTFS permissions. The only difference is that server A is set up in DFS while server B is being pre-seeded before being added to DFS.

DFS namespace type is: domain (Windows Server 2008 mode).

The XP machine had no problem under server A when the DFS namespace type was Server 2000 mode, but I'm not sure that would cause the problem.

I was looking for some files from different folders in a computer so I searched for it using normal windows search and the result has come around 1000 files.

Now when I try to copy all these files and paste it in an external usb, it could not copy because most of the file names are same(though in different paths). Also, I'm not able to check the total sizes of the results.

I wonder then how I can copy all these 1000 files into my usb.

My OS is win xp professional

A:[SOLVED] how to copy all search result files into an USB (even if file names are same

Hello comonforall,

One laborious way to do this would be to temporarily rename them; for instance, if the file is called "Help", rename it to "Help(1)"; then when transferred to their final location, remove the numbers and brackets.

Incidently, what files are you trying to move? If they belong to the Windows XP Operating System; then, transferring them will be useless, because they will not in another location other than the one that they were originally installed.

Post back with the file names.

Kind Regards,

I require a batch file or free utility that i can redistribute from my web site to other users, (gamers) that will copy the contents of a directory inside their game to a new location and re-name the directory at the same time. Something like this;

Copy "Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker" to "Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbutcher"

The batch file needs to be run without the need for a command line box being opened, that is, if the user can double click on it or run it with a 'right click' that would be great. Problem there is, I maybe need an exe file not a batch file. The other part of the problem is that the folder to be copied may or may not be in the same location on every PC that runs the file. It may be the case that the 4tonbaker folder is on;
C:\Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker or
D:Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker or even
E:\Games\mystuff\Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker

and I require the end user to have no need to know, just for the directory to be copied and renamed when and where it is found.

If possible I then want the batch file to perform a second task. I want to distribute a folder, lets say it is 4tonbutcher and in that folder there are files lets say doc1.txt, doc2.txt and doc3.txt

On any given users PC 4tonbaker has these same named files but the content is different to the ones in my folder 4tonbutcher, I want to update the newly created folder, 4tonbutcher with the new txt files I d... Read more

We've got a file server here in the office on which we have a separate folder for each client. In several of these folders are a document, specific to that client, but with the same name as a similar though not identical document in another client's folder. In other words in client1's folder there may be document.doc and in client2's folder there may be a document.doc. I have need to create a collection of the 400 or so document.doc files in one place but if I were to try to simply copy them from the search result I would get a message asking me if I want to overwrite the files. Is there a way, perhaps from the command line, to copy the files from the search results to the new location and append the name of the folder from which the file is being copied to the file? In other words, client1\document.doc and client2\document.doc will be copied to newfolder\documentclient1.doc and newfolder\documentclient2.doc. Is this something for which I should use robocopy? I've got two computers, one running xp pro sp3 and the other running win 7 pro sp1. The files are on an ms small business server 2011 and will, hopefully, be copied to a file on one of the two local computers from the server. Thanks!

A:copy files from search result and append previous location to file

You cannot copy a file with the same name to a new location without overwriting the previous version. Rename the file before copying it, If you want to keep the original file name in the original folder, then copy it and rename it before moving it. Of course if you rename the file then it will not get updated once changes are made.

I'm currently in the process of copying files back from the cloud in the exact same location where I had them before and now it says that the file name is too long and prompts to see whether I want to skip the file or not. The error message given does not
give the full file name or the path so it is impossible to see which files were copied successfully or not. This never happened with XP! Then afterwards I found that some of the files with long names did copy successfully whereas others didn't. I find this
to be a very user unfriendly process and I'm totally confused! These are critical files and I'm sure I haven't exceeded 260 characters or whatever. This is soOoO frustrating!!

A:file copy error message not sufficient + file name too long will not copy

Hi ,

There is a limit of filename length within Windows Explorer. In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which
is defined as 260 characters.
The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the Windows API that the shell user interface is not able to interpret properly.
This means that your long filename can only be handled at the command prompt level and you cannot drag and drop an illegal length filename within Windows Explorer.

Please simplify your folders and titles.

More information, please check the part of Maximum Path Length Limitation in the link below.

Greetings,

I am new to these forums, but it seems to me this was a good place to go for perplexing questions such as the one I am posing. Google FTW!

Anyway, I recently had a Western Digital hard drive crash due to an unstable connection to the PC. I managed to fiddle round enough with it to where I can connect it to get data from it, though I don't trust the connection to last long. Said connection failure resulted in my having to format the drive in order to have windows properly read it.

I've managed to get a lot of the iportant audio I had stored on the drive using software called GetDataBack. There were a few files thad appeared to have been recovered but that were silent. GetDataBack showed me file sizes which told me said files had ovbiously been broken somehow, though I had copies of these elsewhere so I wasn't too worried.

When it came to retrieving my documents and text files, however, I encountered a very strange thing. GDB shows that all the file sizes are correct (at least on the one's I compared to copies I had floating around) but when I go to copy them and view the on another drive, said files appear to have no text. The file size once on the drive shows me 0KB.

Why would GDB show me the correct file sizes but copy over the same file that appears to be completely void of data? Why would audio files be more in tact than simple .doc and .txt files? Is there any way I can repair/recover these files or are they really devoid of data even ... Read more

I am a complete newbie when it comes to batch files and batch file software, so apologies in advance.

I've done some research on Google etc but I seem to just be getting more and more confused trying to use various different scripts and programs and reading different info on various websites.

This is what I need...

I have a folder with around 2000 files in it. I want to be able to copy certain files from this folder (normally around 40) and place them in a brand new folder, I want to be able to do this with nothing more than a txt file that has all the file names I need copying in it with every file name on a separate line.

I receive around 10 new txt files each day so you can imagine how tedious it is searching through 2000 files, picking out the 40 I need, 10 times a day everyday.

To make things even more complicated, the txt files I receive don't always have the correct file names in them, maybe there's a misspelling or a word or two missing for some of the names. That's ok when I'm going through picking out the files I need to copy myself because I can normally tell which file is being requested, but I can't see it being so easy for a program or whatever to do, I'm guessing it'll need to have a search feature where it picks out the most likely file.

I'd like it to be as automated as possible. I receive the txt file, make sure each file name is on a separate line then a program or script or whatever goes out and picks out the files (or most likely files f... Read more

I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and having the same problem. You can easily resolve the "Hidden File" problem by right clicking on the file, select Properties, and remove the check box next to "Hidden". If you tagged all the photos in a folder, simply select all (ctrl-A) and do the same. It solved the hidden file problem for me without having to show all hidden files.

The problem I'm running into that I can't fix is that even after doing this, Carbonite now recognizes these files as system files and refuses to back them up. Even if you try to manually force Carbonite to back them up, it immediately unselects the check box. Hopefully somebody knows of a solution.

It's weird, because I was tagging photos just a few weeks ago, and didn't have any problems at all. I don't know if there was an update at some point that screwed this all up.

Thanks,

A:Files are listed by Carbonite as system files after adding tag

Welcome to Seven Forums deltaugif.
Have you tried to use the Show Hidden folder to see if Carbonite still does this? Also McAfee has been identified as the reason being files being hidden after an edit.
Maybe someone at Carbonite has a solution? I have no experience with it. I would think a backup program would, well, backup, everything.

Good morning / Good afternoon
As a newbie I am making the first posting on your forum and I hope it is not a silly question.

I received a hard print of an excel spreadsheet with data in 9 columns (2 date formatted and 6 number formatted) of figures from my by bank and I wish 2 use them for further calculation. As I didn't get an electronic file from the bank I scanned the data sheet on the HP Scanner into text files ( rich text, plain text etc) and attempted to import the text into Excel; but I was unsuccessful. Have I attempted the impossible or did I do something wrong ?

If it is possible to do so how should I proceed ?
With thanks, anothernub

I'm trying to copy a VHD (22g, dynamic I think...)

I tried richcopy. It says copy started, but then stops....

I saw someone mention xcopy /j, to achieve the unbuffered I/O perf. you get with richcopy...

it's running, but no indication as to how long it takes (EDIT: just finished, > 10 mins),

what's the syntax for single files?

Can't you just paste the path into the source?

(starts, and stops... any logs?)

A:how do I copy a BIG single file (using richcopy?) big file copy

Use this command if the VHD is sitting on C:

robocopy "C:\Users\yourName\VHD Folder" "S:\Storage Folder" *.* /COPY:DAT /E

Change yourname and replace VHD Folder with the name of the folder where the VHD resides. S:\Storage Folder is where you want to store it.

I have a project where I need to search a large amount of text files on my home PC. I recently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7. My research indicated this feature was available in Windows 7.

If you do a search in Windows XP, you get a bunch of fields. You can pick to search for text INSIDE the particular sub folder structure.

I have found this feature in Windows 7, but it is different. I have tried using wild cards but it does not seem to work properly.

Thanks for any advice, if you need further assistance, I could make a video to show the issue.

A:Searching a bunch of text files for a particular text string

I don't have Windows 7. So I can't comment on how effective the search feature is. But I know I would not be able to function without the tool Agent Ransack.

It's a free utility, see if it will work for your needs: http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/windows/Agent-Ransack-Review-60432.shtml

Hi,

First, I apologize for this post being so long.

I'm running windows XP w/Service Pack 3 and all critical updates.
I'm having a strange problem with text files.
The text I enter into the file gets mysteriously rearranged.

I was making a numbered list in notepad.

Like this (just as an example):
1. Text on the first line.

2. Text on the second line.

3. Text on the third line.

4. Text on the fourth line.

5. Text on the fifth line.
Nothing fancy just entering the info manually.
the list was numbered up to line 190.
I went back to look over the list and I noticed that
it was numbered wrong. Some numbers were skipped.
I just figured I misnumbered it but after I fixed the
numbering it kept happening.

I copied and pasted the list from notepad into another text editing
program and it kept happening in the other program too.
So to test it I wrote a few more lines to see if it would mess it
up again.

I wrote 5 more lines in the new program
(numbering here is just an example):
10. Text on the tenth line.

11. Text on the eleventh line.

12. Text on the twelfth line.

13. Text on the thirteenth line.

14. Text on the fourteenth line.
I left notepad open while I looked over to watch something on tv for
a few minutes and when I looked back at the computer the thing had
renumbered itself again. The last two lines had switched places and
were now both numbered the same number.
It looked like this:

10. Text on the tenth line.

11. Text on the Eleventh line.
