U310 Touch Display shows wrong resolution at BIOS, Windows and Linux

Q: U310 Touch Display shows wrong resolution at BIOS, Windows and Linux

Hello, Thank you for your time, my issue started with a broken screen, I asked for a replacement through mail, when I installed the new screen it seemed to work fine. At a certain time of turning off the computer and starting it, the resolution is off by 86 pixels horizontal, the original resolution is 1366x768 (16:9), and now shows 1280x800 or multiples (w=1280,h=*). At first I thought it was an issue with drivers with Windows 10 the forums entries I found seem to indicate this, tried all of them. I also tried the custom screen resolution tool from Intel, it adds the resolution inside the tool, but it does not list the new resolution in the "graphics properties" section. With no luck at solving the problem I tried to boot a GNU/Linux Live version from a FlashDrive, with GNU/Linux showing the same resolution limitation. I've noticed that going to the BIOS is showing the same screen usage. After this, my old screen still works it just the crystal that got cracked, I reinstalled and noticed that has the same screen size problem, so is not the new screen it seems. This is the point till I've gotten, don't know much about UEFI maybe it saves screen resolution information at a place I can't reach, and is not adapting itself correctly imposing it screen scan to the OS that start to work after UEFI. The only thing that comes to mind. Your help is appreciated,Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A:DISPLAY PROBLEM Ideapad U310 Touch

Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As I understand that you are facing issues with your Ideapad U310 touch display, however when you power on the unit there is power but  no display and the screen remains black.
Here are the troubleshooting steps that you may try
Please do try these troubleshooting steps that may help. - Start by doing a hard reboot, remove the battery and unplug the AC adapter then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds then try booting it up again. - If this will not work, do test the AC adapter if it's working properly. Remove the battery and power the laptop with just the AC adapter connected and see if it will boot up or not. do also try a different AC adapter that has the same voltage and see if it will work or not. - Proceed with reseating the RAM's if trying a different AC adapter will not work, remove them all for couple of seconds then put them back in making sure everything is seated properly. - If it will still not work, connect an external monitor and see if you'll get any display from it. If there's a display on the external monitor that could mean that the problem is the built in display.  - But if there's still no display on the external monitor that means the problem lies in the motherboard.
In addition, here are further service centers that you can also check
I hope the above information helps.

Hello, I have had a U310 Touch for over three years now and I have recently discovered that after the upgrade to Windows 10 the BIOS is now nonexistant. When I run the command prompt to identify the BIOS it is blank where it should show which version I have. When pressing the NOVO button I receive the option screen to boot to BIOS or Boot Management screen but no matter what option I select the OS boots regularly. Is there any known solutions for this. When searching the drivers and downloads section with the computer in question no BIOS files appear. Thanks

Hello, I recently installed a new SSD in my U310 laptop and put Windows 10 on it. Everything was working fine until I ran the Bios update found on Lenovo's website located here. After the update installed without any error messages, the machine rebooted and I was left looking at the boot menu. I selected the ssd and the screen went blank for 15 seconds or so and then the boot menu appeared again. I've restarted the machine several times, tried booting from usb, and even tried putting the old hard drive back in but I just keep getting the blank screen and then back to the boot menu. Nothings working. When the computer first starts it doesn't show a lenovo logo or any text. Because of this it seems that I'm unable to get into the bios too. What do I do here? The laptop is basically bricked it seems.

Dear All, Hope all of you are very good! My name is Eduardo and I'm from Brazil. I have a ultrabook U310 touch from Lenovo, s/n QB06816995, and I am in a terrible problem! The screen of this ultrabook is broken and I'm using an external VGA monitor at this moment. I have connected the external VGA monitor in the HDMI port of the ultrabook using a HDMI/VGA cable. Using an external monitor I'm not able to see the BIOS or boot screens when I turn on the ultrabook. The first screen that I have seen is the Windows logon (maybe because in that moment, the operating system has sent a signal to an external monitor and in the boot this situation doesn't happen). The problem is: I want and I have to install a new operating system in this ultrabook once I can't enter into the original SO anymore, and for doing that, I have to access the BIOS and change the priority of booting in order to use a windows bootable pendrive or DVD. I have already tried to do the following steps: 1) to use the keys to change from the main screen to an external monitor; 2) disconnect the battery for 15 seconds and drain the energy in order to do the first step again; 3) remove the HDD and connect it in another computer to format it using a wintohdd software and assemble it again in the ultrabook; 4) to do the third step without using the wintohdd software; 5) look at the youtube and try to find some videos where I could watch someone doing something i... Hi, I posted a few weeks ago about an intermittent resolution my x121e is having. It switches to 1280x800 rather than the correct 136x768. This issue remained for a week, then disappeared, and has now returned. It effects the whole computer, rather than just the linux mint 11 operating system. Terminal commands (xrandr) and grub edits, do not provide a fix.  Hence it has been suggested this is likely a BIOS bug relating to graphics or the motherboard. I am considering a resetting BIOS to defaults once I can ensure the effects this will have on the general working of the machine. No edits have been made to the BIOS by me personally so I cannot be sure if it will work. Other than the virtual shoulder to cry on, would anyone have any advice on what else might be at issue? Or the warranty status pertaining to Linux users? Regards, Daniel.

This is a minor annoyance is all but it's driving me crazy.
I have a Dell touch monitor that is 1920x1080 and I have a 55in TV that is also 1920x1080
Both of these displays report as that resolution in the display properties of win 8.1 x64
However when extending the displays the full resolution is only 3456x1080 so it doesn't recognize the full 3840 width.
I also use this same computer in a different house with the same Dell monitor but a 40in Samsung tv and windows does report a full 3840 width.
Now I've checked the settings on the tv and I didn't see any setting that might affect this anomaly.

Any ideas on why the difference? I'm just curious more than anything else. The only problem is correcting the icon postions when changing the tv that's connected.

I just got the Envy 27 display to use with my Mac Pro (late 2013). It connected automatically, but the highest resolution it will display is 2560 x 1600, which is not only far below the display's native 4K resolution (so it looks "cloudy" and not sharp at all), but it is also stretched. I drew a perfect square in Adobe Illustrator and using a ruler on top of the display, found that the square was 9cm wide and 8cm tall. It's stretching horizontally.  I am considering returning the display. It looked amazing and was highly recommend for Mac users, but as a creative professional I need it to be correct. Any suggestions?

Hello everybody

I had a NB200 netbook and a couple of weeks ago it began to boot at 1024x768 screen resolution, instead of its 1024x600. I searched these forums and I couldn't find anything related to this issue,

The Toshiba logo at boot time does not appear centered on the screen and, once Windows desktop is loaded, the Start button bar does not appear. (it's like windows render a 1024x768 screen on a 1024x600 pixels display (168 'lines' are 'lost'). If you plug an external monitor, it looks ok.. Driver videos are updated (althiugh the problem appears at boot time, before windows is started)

I checked BIOS settings about Display, but I seens that there is only one option (about booting only with LCD or auto). I also upgraded BIOS fromToshiba web site.

Any idea about how to fix this will be welcomed

thankyou very much for your time

I am at the point of installing Windows 10 again to remedy the issue.  However, before I do, I would like to see if there is a way to fix the problem with my PC as it would either not display the resolution properly (it would display the start screen
in a small display) or it would not display anything at all.  When it does the former, the screen becomes blank once I click any key to bypass the checking and scanning disk operation.  Long story short, I purchased a new SSD after my primary OS
HDD had issues by not booting up Windows at all.  Whenever I try fixing it, it would not do anything.  Because the HDD is old, my guess is that it is corrupted to the point of not being repaired.  However, I leave the HDD accessible through
my PC because  I can access the HDD to obtain files.
When it does the latter, I would have to try to do a hard power off so that the PC can run into an error in order to show the small resolution.
Once I get the small resolution display and the monitor turns off after the check disk step, I leave the PC on for 10-20 minutes and then press and hold the power button to shut the PC off.  When I boot it back up, it sometimes have the correct resolution
where I can then use the PC.  I am currently typing this post on my PC as I had to perform the procedures above just to get it working.

Hello and greetings to all of you. Im quite new here, so i don't know a lot about solutions to fixing hardwares.

Recently, my sister couldn't access her laptop ( Toshiba Satellite C660D-1GR ) as her hard drive was empty. I added windows 10 on it and noticed when i turn it on, it doesn't show the Toshiba boot up logo ( Recovery or BIOS etc ) and heads straight to the windows boot up logo. That's when i notice windows couldn't install without it and i had to use another laptop to install it instead.

After it was installed and added all the necessary apps i know, i wanted to install the driver for the laptop. I searched for it and followed the instructions as shown. It said it'll install the BIOS when its restarting. I waited a long time and noticed the screen is just plain blank. I restarted it again and it showed the same thing.

Im assuming i put in the wrong BIOS. I looked through other people having the same problem but the thing is that they're using HP.
Please help!

This topic is marked as "solved"???

Assuming it's not solved, what exact steps did you do? Unless the other laptop was identical, you can't install the OS onto the HDD in one computer and then move the drive to the other computer (as least not with a high probability of success).

The splash screen can often simply be disabled in the BIOS. So not seeing the splash screen isn't an indication of an actual problem.

To update the BIOS, you would need to boot from a USB stick or CD/DVD with the firmware (preferred) or boot into Windows and run a Windows based application. From the description above, it doesn't sound like you did that, so I don't know that you actually have a BIOS issue.

A:Re: U310 Touch Hinge

I purchased a Lenovo U310 Touch last May and it has been working wonderfully until recently.  I've noticed in the last few weeks that every time I open or close the lid, the hinge makes a loud cracking noise and pops off at the ends. I can press the hinge cover back into place, but it just continues to pop off every time I open/close it. I contacted Lenovo Support about the issue, and even though my machine is still under warranty, they will not fix it without charging me because they have no proof I didn't break it myself (which I find absolutely ridiculous; I haven't dropped or damaged it in any way, and if you look at the computer you can clearly see it is otherwise in perfect condition.)That being said, has anyone else experienced this problem with the U310? Does anyone have any suggestions to fix it? I am concerned that it will just get worse and eventually affect my display.

Hello, I purchased a U310 Touch about 15 months ago that is no longer under warranty. Every time I try and boot the machine I receive no response from the machine. The power light turns on, the fan spins, the HDD turns on but the screen never displays anything. Even when I close the clamshell the machines power button stays lit and won't shut off unless I kill the power by holding down the power button. My troubleshooting steps have been:Reset RAMUnplug battery from motherboardWait for battery to completely drainBoot with HDMI monitor to see if anything displays (nothing would, so LCD panel should be good) With all of these, I cant get the machine to fully function. It feels like the machine is in total sleep mode, I feel like it needs a new motherboard. With my experience with lenovo I feel like this will be the last machine I ever purchase from them, this is unacceptable for a laptop of this age.  Does anyone have any similar situations? If so did you purchase a new motherboard and was it good to go? I'm very comfortable with ripping machines apart since I used to work on a help desk. I would hate to spend $100 on a part and waste all that time if it wont fix the issue.  Any help is greatly appreciated.Thank you.

Since upgrading to Windows 10 from 8.1, I've seen the following message several times.

Display Driver stopped responding and has recovered
Display driver Intel HD Graphics Drivers for Windows 8(R) stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
When it happens, my laptop screen goes black for a few seconds, except for the taskbar and toast notification. I also have an external monitor that doesn't seem affected at all.

I can reproduce the error pretty consistently if I rapidly switch a Flash video back and forth between full-screen and embedded, but that's not the only time I've seen the problem.

As far as I can tell, everything continues running. Even the full-screen video continues running after the screen isn't black any more.

The weird thing is that the driver name it shows isn't the driver I'm using. I've already upgraded my display drivers to the latest available from Intel's site.

Some things I've observed:

The information presented by Windows in Settings -> Display -> Advanced display settings shows the driver for Windows 10 that I downloaded from Intel. The "Intel HD Graphics Control Center" that was installed along with the driver shows the latest driver version that I downloaded from Intel. In Settings -> Apps & Features there's only one "Intel(R) Processor Graphics Driver" listed.Event viewer shows very little useful information:

A:U310 touch water resistent?

Hi Kelly,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
No, neither the keyboard nor the rest of the computer are waterproof. The drain holes drain water out but once it's in there, it can do damage despite this.  Lenovo won't honor the warranty if there's even the slightest evidence of water spills.
If you have water spillage, you should leave it to dry for two days before reattaching the AC and battery.

I'm running Windows 8.1. I started having issues the day before yesterday when I downloaded Skype. It froze several times, task manager couldn't kill it, and I had to turn my laptop off to close the program. After doing that, I was able to use Skype and did so for a few hours with no other issues that night. Yesterday, while in the middle of watching a video on Chrome, the video suddenly froze and it popped up saying that Chrome wasn't responding, did I want to wait or close it. I selected close but it wouldn't close, just kept running the "Windows is looking for a solution to the problem" thing for several minutes so I had to end Chrome through the task manager. When I tried to reopen it, it wouldn't respond. I restarted and decided since I'd had no issues before installing Skype, I would uninstall it and see if that helped. I also uninstalled a few games I no longer used in case I was having space issues. I then had it download and install any Windows updates, restarted after that was done, and was able to use Chrome again. A few hours later (the computer had been asleep for at least two or three hours,) I was successfully browsing when I tried to view a news site and Chrome froze/stopped responding. I tried to select "close the program" again but got same result, it wouldn't close, kept saying "Windows is looking for a solution to the problem" so I used the task manager to close it again. Repeat the earlier issues, couldn't reopen Chrome, turned laptop off and back on... Read more

The resolution are set as recommended but indeed these are different. As soon as I remove the TV, everything is getting back to normal. Anyone experienced this behavior ?

A:Wrong resolution on main display at boot in dual screen mode

Yes there are problems with second displays affecting the primary display in many cases.

You may be lucky in the fact that removing the second display restores the primary display to normal - sometimes it remains distorted until rebooting.

No doubt the problems will go in time as the TV hardware improves, and the PC display drivers become more effective for multiple different display formats.

Hello Lenovo,I'm a business management student from India.I purchased Lenovo Ideapad U310 Touch model this May from the US (through Amazon) and have been using it without any issues till the last month. Last month I noticed that the hinge had developed tension and there was additional pressure on the lid or the screen area while closing. I thought it would be a routine issue and took it to my college's hardware repair center, but they suggested I handle the issue via Lenovo Support as it required opening the laptop. When I checked Lenovo support through customer care (India), I was told that the U series is not covered by International warranty. But I checked if the Lenovo service center would still have a look at the issue, to which I was told that it would be chargeable. I thought it was fair enough and took the laptop to the service center in Jamshedpur this afternoon. To my utter disappointment, the technician was unable to open up the area near the screen (where the problem was supposedly), but he also got the screen cracked while trying to. Now I'm left with a laptop that cannot be used as even though the screen display is intact, the touch sensors detect screen touch near the cracked area and keep the cursor rooted to that point. Also, the issue with the hinge could also not be fixed. All to add to the woes, I will have to manage a few days (don't know how many) without a laptop and also shell out the expense from my pocket! Now my question is, will the screen for Ideapad... I just purchased my u310 touch from Staples tonight.  Within the first hour, while using it, it just shut off.  No "Windows is shutting down..." screen.  It was like it just ran out of battery (even though it was plugged in and the icon said it was plugged in and charging at 55%). After some googling and seeing similar issues with the 310 and the 410, I tried installing the latest drivers that the support staff on this forum linked.  I installed every single one relevant to my machine, ensuring I chose the correct driver for my OS (win8 64).  Still  happening. The event viewer shows: Source: Kernel Power.  Description: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first.  This error coudl be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. So, I reset everything back to factory settings using the built-in restore partition.  Still broken. I'm at a loss here.  Any ideas?  If I can't figure it out soon, I'll just return it to Staples in a few days.  Thank god they have a great return policy!

hi duckhunter9,
Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Can you try to:
1. Download and install HWMonitor and observe your CPU and GPU temps. (if you reach temps above 100C, overheating might be the cause of your issue)
2. Perform a clean boot and observe the PC. (this isolates 3rd party apps that might be the cause of the problem)
Let me know your findings,

I want to replace my 3-year old Lenovo U310 laptop.  Any suggestions?  I'm not lacking in performance or functionality.  I just have a screen issue.

A:Suggestions for replacement of my U310 Touch Ideapad (Ultrabook)

Hi TC22 ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
You can consider LCD panel replacement first since performance and functions are ok.
This can be considered specially if connecting to an external monitor shows normal.
Using the part number to search for parts from the parts looks up page for pricing and availability.
Hope this help answer your query.

Long story short. My laptop is capable of running a resolution at 1280 x 800 but currently I am running at 1280 x 720 because when I turn on my laptop the resolution doesn't fill up the screen which ends up leaving a black vertical bar on the right side of the screen. (When I am in 1280x720 I have two black bars one running horizontaly on the top, and one vertically on the right side)  I am forced to use 1280 x 720 even though it's still broken because in 1280 x 800 the taskbar is hidden and a lot of my icons are hidden.  Now, the fix that I have for this was when I was booting up the laptop I would open and close the lid before the "start windows normaly" message would pop up, and it would usually have it filled up the whole way but now this fix doesn't work.  Anyone else have this problem?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
Have you tried uninstalling the video drivers, rebooting the computer and then installing a fresh copy of the drivers ?
The link below is for the available drivers from Lenovo for your model. Just select your operating system in the top box for the correct driver listing.......

im not sure if im in the right thread, sorry if im in the wrong place.

PC Speccs:
- Vista Home Premium x64
- Service Pack 2
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 card (has connections for 2 screens)
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 onboard (correct me if this isnt possible)
- HDMI card

My workflow at the moment:
- PC monitor connected to my pc (identify screen number 4) MAIN MONITOR
- 52inch TV connected to my pc with HDMI (identify screen 1)

The problem:
When i boot my system, the BIOS screen is displayed on my TV (even when my desktop isnt extended to my TV). After the boot when the system hits the windows logo it switches automaticly to my Pc monitor.

All fine and well when nothing is wrong, but when he refuses to boot after lets says a wrong logoff i had to turn my tv on and switch modes to see what the problem is.

My question:
Is there an option to let the BIOS startup beeing displayed on my PC monitor?

Extra info's:
- I cant switch connections, TV has to be HDMI and PC has to be VGA.
- The 2 outputs on my GTX 260 are beeing identified as monitor 3 & 4.
- Dont ask me how i have 4 monitors because i only have 3 outputs in the back (?)
- Their are only 2 monitors active at all times, so number 2 & 3 you can forget about those numbers.

If more information is needed, please tell me.
Im happy to give it my all.

Thank you in advance,

A:BIOS display on the wrong screen

It's how the computer display adapters are listed out. And yes it's correct having 4 outputs.

The computer is spitting out the display adapter of the hdmi as #1, and will always display that output first if connected. Even though it's not on, so as long as you have the hdmi plugged in, the computer sense its an active connection.

If you give me somemore system info, I can get more specific.

Hi guys. I just upgraded my processor to an AMD 8350. It replaced my Phenom. This is the 3rd day the new processor has been in the computer. First two days everything went fine. Ran Prime 95 and IBT to make sure i was up and stable. This morning (3rd day) got up, turned on the computer, and now i have less usable ram than i had last night. No matter how many times i restart, it shows less in windows than what bios shows. It says either 4,6, or 8gb usable ram (it changed just about every time too). I have reseated all the ram. I have moved them around. I have reseated the processor. I have clean installed windows 7 home premium x64. Does anyone have any ideas? This is the first issue with RAM i have ever ran into. Also, when i am in bios, and i go to the RAM settings, everything shows up like it is supposed to. Details, options, timings, etc. Not really sure where to go from here.

A:12gb ram shows in bios, only 4,6,or 8 usable shows in windows

In most AMD CPUs, the memory controller is on-die in the CPU. Maybe your FX-8350 is malfunctioning.

- Do you have the correct voltage for your memory set in BIOS?
- What kind of memory is it? (brand name, model, and speed)
- Have you tried putting the Phenom back in to see if the 12GB memory comes back?

Hello, I have  a lenovo Z500 touch that I have seldom used in the 3 years since I bought it mostly playing music when on holiday. I have just started trying to use it with Cubase music production software with an external monitor via HDMI. Several times a day the system freezes and can only be recovered by hard reset. There is no sign in the system event log of a problem until after a restart when the kernel reports that the system wasn't cleanly shut down. The system is much more stable using only the integrated display. I discovered that there is a downloadable Lenovo Diagnostics CD which is built on a Linux base. The Z500 freezes every time in the Video Card stress test both with and without an HDMI connected display. It has now also frozen on one of the extended memory tests. It is exactly the same type of freeze as occurs with Windows. So, this is not a Windows problem as it occurs in the diagnostics Linux system. In Windows it only ever fails when a second display is connected so looks like it is related to the Intel HD 4000 graphics. Running HWMonitor there is no sign of high CPU temperatures. At the point of freezing, which I have just directly watched, the screen flickers. For a short while after the freeze the keyboard back light can be switched on and off and then about 30 seconds after it stops responding. caps lock and num lock don't respond immediately after the freeze. I stongly suspect that there is a serious hardware problem and ... Read more

A:Z500 Touch freezing in Windows, Linux and Lenovo Diagnostics

Start with memory diagnostics. But could also be the motherboard. Eliminate memory as the cause. If you have two modules you can also test one at a time if you have crashes with one only then you know.

I bought a u310 slightly used but had a failing HDD. The person who was using it installed an operating system on the SSD and now I can't seem to access the bios at all. I had read that this may happen if Rapid Start is not disabled before formatting the SSD.  What do I need to do to be able to access the bios again? There is no bios files listed as a download for this computer so I can't even seem to be able to flash the bios. I already sent it to lenovo to replace the HDD and instead they tried to charge me $167 to image the machine, which I said no to and they sent the computer back without fixing it.

Hello everyone, I know thta it is already many topics about accesing BIOS issues, but here I have got an Lenovo U310 laptop which is doesnt boot to the system even, so I have to change the boot priority in the BOIS setting which I cant acces. By using guides how to reflash BOIS by using a pen drive https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-U-and-S-Series-Notebooks/Bios-Recovery-For-ideapad-laptops/td-p/...I do everything by this guide, but when I try to boot from pen drive by using win_key+B or any different keys I have the same result: Flash Crisis recovery diskRemove and press any key.Ped drive is blinking each time I press any key and after 1-2 sec stops.Pen drive is made properly by giude and .wph file as bios.wph for U310 (65CN13WW.wph) copied to the pen drive with files "MINIDOS.SYS"-"PHLASH16.EXE".In additional photos I have my main problem of laptop which doesnt boot the system but shows thi messages.

bruceb3 ... WinDirStat will show what you are looking for.  Download here, from bleepingcomputer.com.

BleepingComputer Review:
WinDirStat scans one or more hard drives and produces a detailed map or the disk making space hogs immediately apparent.
It does this by drawing a rectangle for each file, the relative sizes being decided by the relative sizes of the files. So, a very big file will be a very big box and a small file would be a small box.

I have a P3 800. When i right click my computer sometimes i get 796mhz which is fine but sometimes Windows tells me i have a 647mhz processor which is odd. I downloaded a seperate benchmark program (Freshdiagnose) and that agreed with Windows on both occasions. My Bios gets it right though. Does anyone have any ideas? Will programs and games perform at the speed it says in Windows?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.

A:Windows shows wrong processor speed.

Laptops usually scale back the processor speed to save heat and power consumption, when full speed is not required.

You do not have a problem.
