Error during windows update, networking does not work, wireless does not work

Q: Error during windows update, networking does not work, wireless does not work

System: Laptop model HP 2000-410US
OS: windows 7 64bit Home 7 Home Premium
Several problems
1. When I initiate Windows update, I see there are 6 important updates and 6 opttional update. However when it tries to download and install the updates, windows update runs into problems and give the following error codes
Code 80246005
Code 80246008
Code 670
Tried everything but cannot get it to work
2. No sound.....some kind of audio service is not starting. i do not know what it means
3. No wifi...I see the wireless icon key with white light....meaning the wireless is on and also the Ethernet port is lit white and occasional rapid blinking of amber light.  But cannot go on the internet. The wireless router is connected to laptop via Ethernet cable.
4. No errors of any kind under device manager
5. when the laptop is turned on and when the login screen appears, the screen is very bright but as soon as i enter the first letter of the password, the screen dims and stays dim...i am not sure why ?
6. when the laptop is on and not used for few minutes, the screen goes black ( but the laptop is still on) but will not come back and only come back if the laptop is rebooted.
So far i have used cc cleaner but no luck.
cannot uninstall silverlight from control panel using add/remove programs.

Preferred Solution: Error during windows update, networking does not work, wireless does not work

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

To start, these threads:
Laptop can no longer access shared printer/files on home network
It's not the printer, it's the network (Error code 0x80070035)
Error code 0x80070035 redux, and I am getting battier by the minute
cover the long background of my problem - that a Win7 laptop in my house cannot access other computers on the network, or a USB printer connected to one of those computers. And the problem just appeared all of a sudden (albeit, 2+ years ago). And every other computer in the house - XP, Win7, MacOS - can network and print fine.
Today I finally brought the laptop into the shop to see if they could do anything for me.
The tech took a look at it, said that he could find nothing wrong, and offered two theories.
One is that he could come to my house and try to troubleshoot it in its "native environment." This doesn't make a lot of sense to me, since I really don't know anything magic he could try or see at home, that he'd not see elsewhere.
The other was the thought that maybe the laptop's wireless card was bad. "I've seen it happen," he said, where a wireless card goes partially bad, retaining some functionality but losing others.
How likely is this? That the laptop would have perfect wifi and internet connectivity for 2+ years, but no networking capability with other hardware in the house. 100% "all or nothing" - doesn't make sense to me.

A:Could a bad wireless card work for wi-fi but not for networking?

Why don't you borrow or buy one of those inexpensive USB wifi adapters and see it it works then? At least that will answer the question for you.

I purchased a new notebook with Windows 7 in October. During the first weeks I uninstalled McAfee and replaced the harddrive. Since November Windows Update fails with error messages and defender does not start anymore. I made several virus scans (complete) with multiple antivirus programs but nothing showed up.Since it took my days to install various software, I do not want to re-install W7. I also have no good backup that I could restore. I am really surprised that there is not even a single entry regarding the error code in the Microsoft Knowledge base or elsewhere.I really would appreciate help.

If You are using notebooks with with hard drive larger than 700 GB you probably should update Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver.

How do I switch from wireless to wired networking?

If my laptop is off, I plug in my network cable and switch the wireless radio off, Windows starts fine and I can reach the internet.
If I turn on the radio and unplug the network cable, I can still reach the internet.

If I plug the cable back in and switch off the wireless radio, Windows can't find any networks.

The only way to use a wired network is to plug in the cable and restart Vista. Why is that? How do I fix it?

A:Switching from wireless to wired networking doesn't work

I cannot tell you why, however you can run with both connected at the same time. The wired will take over the connection. That's what happens on my laptop
I have just experimented replicating what you have described and mine works.
Question, are you giving it time to reconnect? I tried mine three times and each time it took about one minute or more to reconnect.

Hi Everyone

Apologies for not including any Log files at this stage, but I would appreciate your thoughts on the following:

I've just installed Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium on a new SSD for my aged Acer Aspire 5920G. Following installation, many updates, including SP1 were automatically added through Windows update.
I then came to Activating, and when it was refused, suddenly realised and remembered (after all these years) that I had in fact purchased a retail version of the Upgrade, and had originally installed it over the top of Vista.

After searching Seven Forums I found and used the work-around binary file, provided on these forums for such a situation. With this I successfully Activated.

After continuing to install s/w and generally set things up, I realised that Windows update was no longer running. I manually set it going, and it has just continued to search for updates for hours without anything else happening. Further investigation using the MS Fixit tool revealed the Error code 0x8007005, (Access Denied, as I've since found out).

I've tried every fix I can find, including SFC Scannow and SubInAcl, without any joy.

Am I correct to assume this has been caused by my clean install of an upgrade version? Can anyone suggest a remedy without me having to start again with a new full copy of Windows 7?

Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.

I have setup a Static IP address through Windows XP, and I am trying to forward ports to my Xbox 360 (to avoid Strict NAT settings). The problem right now is that I cannot access my routers set up page.

I am using a D-Link WBR-2310, which is not installed on the PC, but runs a password-protected wireless network. I have run IPconfig, and have obtained the IP address and Default Gateway. When I type either in my Web Browser (tried Firefox/IE) I am led to my DSL modem's setup page and not my wireless router.

I have tried every IP address possible (from the default router address to the IPconfig) and I cannot access my wireless router setup. Through the D-Link website, I have also tried to use an emulator, but I am unable to make any changed regarding Port Forwarding. Once again, my wireless router is not installed, and the installation is not working because "The router is not detected- Error 322"

I have been trying to solve this problem for the past 4 hours with no luck so I would appreciate any help! Thanks in advance

Hello. I have an Asus M52 precision Desktop Computer. I have a USB Wireless Adapter called Belkin N300. Here's a photo of the USB Adapter:

The computer originally came with windows 8 64-bit. However, I didn't like windows 8 so I switched to windows 7 (From scratch not downgrade). I started having problems with the internet and everything. So I decided to switch to windows 10. The adapter worked fine on windows 10 and I could game and everything. However, over the years, I decided to get windows 7 back. I always liked windows 7 if you were wondering why I went back. Anyway, this is the part when I start to have problems again. I install the driver from the CD like always. When in first use, it's fine and works. However when I shut off the computer and turn it back on it just fails. I have to connect even though I put it as connect automatically, and normally I have to trouble shoot it. When I troubleshoot it, this is what I get:

Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

Also, When I go to device manager I get this:

Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

Strangely, In the past when I had windows 7 before switching to windows 10, I installed the universal serial bus controller and the ethernet controller drivers, but still had network issues. PLEASE HELP. I would appreciate it so much if you could help and give me instructions. This is a very unique problem and a difficult one! THANK YOU.

A:Wireless Adapter won't work on windows 7 but will work on windows 10.

First thing to do is go to the Belkin site and check for a specific windows 7 Driver for the hardware dongle - if there is one available download and install the driver - It may be however that there is not such a driver available, if this is the case then you will have to replace the Dongle

As Windows 7 is now no longer supported fully, (security updates only - extended Support phase runs to 2020), some manufacturers are not providing drivers for it and this is likely to increase in future

My problem is that I cannot access the internet through my LAC. I enable the connection and it will connect and send packets, but will not receive any packets. I have no problems enabling my wireless connection and connecting to the internet. The wireless does like to disconnect and reconnect about 3 or 4 times an hour which is another problem I have. I believe this LAC problem started around the same time I was trying to get shared music between my computers on iTunes. I was trying to allow for connection on port 3689, but everything I did was unsuccessful. Any suggestions for any of these problems I'm having?

Hi All
I had a wireless network (Workgroup) and share Drivecrypt containers remotely over the network. I could open the drivecrypt container on either machine remotely transfer files to and from the containers and stream the data from each.
Both machines are running Drivecrypt 5.4 One machine is running Win 7 64 Ultimate the other was running Vista 32bit.
All was Ok until I updated the Vista machine to Win 7 64 Ultimate.
I can no longer access the drivecrypt containers remotely either way.(But they do open locally)
Drivercrypt allows me to see and enter the password for the network container, the container appears as another drive as normal. But if I try to access the drive I get
"T:\ is not accessible
The parameter is incorrect"
Other media can be streamed both ways between computers without a problem.
Another laptop running Vista can still access both Drivecrypt containers on the WIn 7 Computers.
It seems to be just a problem between the two WIN 7 machines
Would anybody know what the problem could be?

After travelling with my Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop, as many times before, I took it out to start it up, re-installing the Linksys Wireless Network Adapter. The pc was unable to connect to the router and then it crashed. After a few tries, I rebooted and tried to uninstall/reinstall the software, it crashed again during uninstall. It proceeded to crash from boot up or Windows Logo screen until I gave up and packed it back up. Now at home, I tried to re-boot and still crashed at boot. After some research, I finally was able to get enough info to understand the flashing blue screen error message. It was a stop error 0x0000008E. More research and I tried to boot with only one memory stick. It booted up and I had to choose "Last known good config". I then tried the other stick in the other memory slot and it worked too. Hmmm! not sure why! So both sticks and slots work. I decided to try both sticks again and again had to choose "last known good config" and then it booted. So, I don't know if that problem is solved or just at bay for a little longer but, I can still not install or uninstall or update the driver for the wireless card. In Add/Remove programs it shows the Wireless-G Network Adapter with a 0.03 mb file that will not uninstall. If I try to re-install or update drivers it says it is already installed or that drivers already exist and are up to date. Sorry for the book but, I wanted to give as much info as I could. A:Wireless Network Adapter will not work, uninstall, reinstall, or update driver

Since there have been no replies to this, I wanted to update so others with a similar problem may find an answer. I have fixed the problem. It was a registry issue. I was able to get a registry cleaner from the adapter's manufacturer. Though, booting the pc with only one memory stick and finding out the Stop error were also instrumental. After using the cleaner, I downloaded the drivers to another pc and used a flash drive to reintroduce them to my laptop. I am happy to say that I am back up and running with no subsequent crashes and plenty on internet access. Thank You for all of your Help!

OK, so I got some kind of malware/virus where i kept getting the same "important security alert" pop-up every time I clicked on something. So, I ran a system restore thinking that it would take care of it. Well, it didnt. On top of that, after I completed the system restore, my internet browsers now only work in safe mode. I definitely have an internet connection and when I try to run the automatic troubleshooting it says there is nothing wrong with the connection. After that, I downloaded Super AV and malwarebytes and ran them. They found a ton of stuff and I got rid of it. Still, my internet browsers would only work in safe mode. So, I looked on this forum and read about a clean startup. So i used msconfig, hid all the microsoft processes and disabled all the remaining applications. Still, no internet browser. Then, I read having two anti virus applications can cause this problem. So, I uninstalled my Norton 360 that had long since expired. Nothing. Uninstalled Super AV and malwarebytes. Still nothing. I have no idea what it could be. If someone could give me some guidance I would really appreciate it. Ive surfed every forum I could find and tried everything that my level of computer expertise allowed. Now Im at the point that I don't want to screw anything up.

This process will make the network a little less secure but it works well
because a password isn?t used and everyone is allowed access.

1. First,
know what the Computer name is and what Workgroup it belongs to.

The Workgroup name needs to be the same on all PC?s that are being
networked; no matter the OS on each system. This is already setup, even if only
by default, in the setup process while installing each OS.

Verify what the Windows 7 computer and workgroup names are by going to Control Panel > System and Security > System >
and read information under ?Computer name,
domain, and workgroup settings? (The third category down).

If the names need to be changed go to
Change settings in that category or Advanced System
Settings in left pane. Then, Computer Name Tab > Change, type the Computer
Name and Workgroup Name. > OK. Make the computer name meaningful to
aid recognition. The computer should restart.

2. Second,
adjust Win7 settings to allow for sharing with older OS on other networked

Now go to Control Panel > Network and Internet
> Network and Sharing Center > Change Advanced Sharing Settings (side
panel). Make sure Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, and
Public Folder Sharing are all set to ?on? and Password Protected Sharing is set
to ?off?.

What on EARTH process is always running in the background to make my hard drive chatter away for literally nearly 3-5 minutes after a bootup...and we're talking with a FRESH install!....Some something is running a LOT in the background but task manager is absolutely worthless in pointing out what is going on...It even gets to the point where , after having the Edge browser opened and perusing the internet for awhile, things get so bogged down, and windows is too stupid to tell me exactly WHY it's bogged down, things get to where even a mouse click is delayed upwards of 10 seconds! lol. Sometimes things completely freeze and pushing the reset button is the only way out...I've gone as far as downloading Avasts 'emergency startup' disc and booting from it , thinking there might be a virus, but it found nothing (although I'm wondering if it's loading a small portion of windows, which if it is, and a virus or malware is in that small portion, booting to the disc and running the anti-virus software is pointless...maybe I should try it with a linux based emergency disc?) ....

When I tried to follow the instructions on the microsoft site,

What if anything can I do

Unfortunately I can't connect the computer to the internet without the wireless as I'm out of town, typing this in now at a library computer, which right now is my only occasional access to the internet until I get this straightened out.

Chances are that when you installed the Netgear driver and utility you told the utility that you wanted it to manage the wireless. Its icon should be in the Notification Area--double click on it, go to the Network (I'm going from memory here) tab, find the network you want and connect to it.

Information from the Control Panel (System) is as follows:

The mouse that I have is a Rocketfish Nano Laptop Optical Mouse.
Information from the Control Panel (Harware and Sound) (Devises and Printers) shows an icon

When I select the icon , there is information at the bottom of the page that reads:
RF Nano Laptop Optical Mouse Status: Driver error
Model: Rf Nano Laptop Optic...
Category: Mouse
Status: Needs troubleshooting

More info from the Control Panel (Hardware and Sound) (Devises and Printers) is taken from the Mouse link.
The (Hardware tab) in the Mouse link shows two different types of mouse.
One is a Pluralinput Mouse and the other is a Synaptics P/S2 Port Touch Pad.
The Pluralinput information reads:

Hi all and thank you for reading my post.
I have a Dell Inspiron 600m with Windows XP Professional and a virus caused the blue screen followed by the black screen. I did a Windows XP repair, and it came back up, but the wireless Intel Pro set lan 2100 3a mini PCA adapter is not working. I tried to upload the driver but still nothing. Device manager says it's working properly, but it comes up as not-associated, no current SSID, no signal (from my Netgear router)
Also my ethernet controller is not there anymore. Also tried to upload it from a saved file I uploaded from Dell website, but it tells me everything uploaded fine and files were unzipped, yet it does not show up under Device Manager.
So right now, I have no way to connect to the internet to get windows sp2.
Is there a windows file that I could be missing that could have messed up these devices from working properly (other than drivers)
Thanks for your help

A:Wireless lan does not work after Windows XP repair

Install the chipset and then the networking drivers. Probably best to use your Resources/Drivers CD since you apparently are pre-SP2. Else use your Service Tag for easier searching and get them from Dell's web site.

Hi everyone. This is my first post at the SevenForums.

I have had a windows 7 machine for about a year and I recently wanted to get a wireless adapter working on the machine. My machine is a Dell Studio XPS 8000 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

The adapter I am using is a SMCWUSB-G Wireless USB 2.0 adapter.
I don't have any problems seeing the adapter in Device Manager and I have made sure the WLAN Autoconfig is started (see pics).

But when I go to the Network and Sharing center and click on "Manage wireless networks" it is not finding any networks to connect to. (see pic) It should be seeing about 10 (I checked on my netbook that has a working wifi connection.)

If I click on the wireless adapter in Network Connections and then click on "Diagnose this connection" it ends up telling me that "There might be a problem with the driver for the Wireless Network Connection adapter". But I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers from the manufacturers website and I get the same results.

I have read the forums here and tried a few things. I had AVG antivirus installed and I removed it. That didn't help. I have the ZoneAlarm firewall installed and disabled it. That also didn't help. I have not yet tried uninstalling ZoneAlarm to see if that helps. I booted the machine with a live linux usb OS and using that the adapter worked fine. I also tried a different adapter on the machine and got the same results. That tells me there isn't a pr... Read more

I've got an old Sony Vaio laptop with Vista Home Premium 32-bit operating system. I had not been using it much through December and was lazy in updating it. On Jan 10, I downloaded and installed several updates and then some more on Jan 12. Some of the updates available failed. I restarted the laptop to finish installation of those that were successful. After that, however, Windows Update just hangs during the "check for updates" stage. I installed another couple of updates manually from the Windows support website but found that some with the .msi extention (Microsoft standalone installer) does not work either.
On the Installed Updates page of the Control Panel, it states that service pack 3 was installed but on the System and Maintenance page, it still says I'm at Service Pack 2.
I tried MicrosoftFixit50202.msi and MicrosoftFixit.wu.run.exe from Microsoft support website to repair Windows Update. Both reported that the problem was not fixed. This also had the effect of erasing my update history so that I cannot view which updates are still required.
I've run full system scans with Norton Internet Security, Mbam and Superantispyware. All were clear, although Superantispyware did detect and remove 163 tracking cookies that the other two did not report. Also, Mbam took about twice as long as usual to run the full scan.
I've also run Windows Checkdisk for disk errors and bad sectors but it reported that there were no errors.
I tried to use system restore to go back to the ti... Read more

Hi Dexterous:
Many Vista users, including myself, have seen Windows Update appear to hang at the "Checking for updates..." phase for the past few months - see my post in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums for one example.  The problem seems to be more prevalent on machines with limited amounts of RAM and/or slow CPUs and the only solution I know of at the moment is to simply wait for 40 to 50 min to allow "Checking for updates..." to run to completion and present a list of available updates.

I've got an old Sony Vaio laptop with Vista Home Premium 32-bit operating system....On the Installed Updates page of the Control Panel, it states that service pack 3 was installed but on the System and Maintenance page, it still says I'm at Service Pack 2.

There is a Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Win XP, but Service Pack 2 (SP2) is the latest available service pack for for 32-bit Vista.  Could you please confirm that you are seeing a Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Vista in your Control Panel | Programs and Features?  It's possible that some of the updates you manually downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center are not applicable for your Vi... I can not get Windows Update to find any updates. I have gone into Windows update under Change Settings and under Important Updates I checked Install Updates Automatically (Recommended); then checked Recommended Updates; then checked Who can Install Updates;
then checked Microsoft Updates. Then I ran Check for Updates and it ran for an hour and a half and still no updates can be found. Under Review your update history, it shows 2 updates: 1) Update for Windows (KB958488) dated 12/17/2011, 2)Windows Update Agent
7.6.7600.320 dated 7/6/2016. So after saying that my question is WHAT DO I DO TO GET MY WINDOWS UPDATE TO WORK??? I did not know which forum category or forum to choose. I just need to know if I can get my update to work.

I have a new Dell XPS 13 that came with Windows 8.1.  When I switch on I get a notification that windows updates are ready to be installed.  When I go to settings/update and recovery/Windows Update all I see is the little spinning wait symbol (for hours).  I also recently took up the subscription to McAfee anti virus which came pre installed on the computer.  When I try and open McAfee Central the same happens.  These problems also occur when my McAfee firewall is turned off.  I'm not sure if these problems are related
I am concerned that because of the updates not working I won't be able to get my Windows 10 upgrade, I reserved it some time ago but as of today I haven't received my notification.
How can I solve these problems?

A:Windows 8.1 update won't work

Thanks, I resolved the problem myself - the simple solution may be useful to others who encountered the same fault
First I turned off the firewall and made sure it wasn't set to switch back on when I re-booted. I re-booted and went to settings/windows update/choose how updates get installed. It was set to download and install automatically, but of course the downloads were not installing automatically - I changed this to "download updates but choose whether to install them" and applied the change. Then I went to "view details" and was able to select all the uninstalled downloads, which I did and they installed. I then rebooted no ;more warning of uninstalled updates and Win 10 started to download and install.

I've been struggling with this computer of mine off and on for 3 weeks.  I'll give you the "Cliff Notes" version of my tale of woe:
1.  My computer crashed, locked up, went crazy you choose the phrase that pays.
2.  Had to do a system recovery and that went ok - i got all my pictures and files back had to reload some programs but all in all I can't compalin
3. To make a long story short, remember this is the  "Cliff Notes" version, I cannot use windows update.
I go to the up date section and click the button and Nada, Nothing.  It just sits there stuck in the "checking for updates" mode.  I walked away from it for about 2 hours and nothing.
Has this happened to anyone in here?

A:Windows 7 - Update - Does Not Work

This is a fairly common issue at the moment. Please see this page for fixes.
Out of all the fixes, this is the simplest.

Simple solution: Open Windows Update, go to change settings, make sure it's set to install updates automatically, change the Install new updates time to the next hour (as opposed to the 3:00).
Set the computer to never sleep when plugged in. It may take up to two hours for the updates to start, so be patient.

No matter what I do. I have read most posts here and done endless searches on the internet and tried almost everything. And nothing seems to be working. When I try to use Windows Updates it sits and looks for updates forever. When I try to load updates manually from the catalog, it goes through the process and then say update failed at the end. I have downloaded and run all of the fixit and repair tools and nothing has worked. I have downloaded one of the "hotfix" files and got it to install but it did not help. I have manually downloaded some of the kb files that are suppose to correct the problem. A couple of them have installed but most show failed. I have downloaded and installed the latest updater from microsoft. I have shut down my firewall and anti-virus. Nothing is helping. This is on Windows 7 with SP1. I have tried to do a recovery but it will not go back far enough to correct the problem. I can't do a clean Windows install because this is a Toshiba laptop with an OEM install and no disk was provided when I bought the computer. The last time Updates worked was in March. Since then, nothing is working. Am I at a point where I should just forget updating this system anymore. Forget Windows 10, I will go to a Mc before I upgrade. Is there any hope? Chuck

Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.
The above is the message I get every time I click on "Check for updates" on Windows Update. When I bring up the Windows Update, there is a big cross with a red background on the screen. The setting is set to "Install updates automatically (recommended)".
I have restarted the computer a number of times. And I also checked and ensured the Windows Update service had started. However I still ggt the same error message.

Thanks for your help!
When I went through your steps I found a new problem.  The system had run out of space.  Needless to say, problems remain.  I investigated and I posted at

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/085bef4d-aea2-44d0-bba8-6e09948bad94/.  That could be the cause of the problem.

I cannot get Windows Update to work. I get the following message: Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. I have tried the Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended) that Windows Update gives you but that didn't work. I did a search and found this:
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. Type or use cut & past to enter each of the following in the Run Box.
(enter them one at a time & pressing OK after each one)

net stop wuauserv

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML.dll
regsvr32 MSXML2.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

This did not solve my problem. I also read on the internet that the MSXML3.dll file could become corrupted. I deleted that and downloaded the file from Microsoft but I still can't update. I tried this SFC /SCANNOW. I also tried this:

They did not help me. Any ideas?

Windows Update does not work. Going to windows update through the website on IE only tells me to use my built in Windows Update.

It hasn't been working for a while now. Not really sure for how long it has been. The last real thing I updated using Windows Update was the IE8 Compatibility stuff. Microsoft Security Essentials doesn't use Windows Update to update so ignore it in the 2nd picture.
