Preferred Solution: Internet Explorer Freezes When Started & Firefox Freezes/crashes On Some Websites

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. You have a very severely infected system -- likely because of the lack of antivirus & firewall software. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee it will be 100% secure afterwards. Hello,

I have been having trouble for a couple weeks with Firefox. Every so often Firefox will hang, and cause a total system freeze for a short period of time. Sometimes this can cause explorer to crash too, other times if for example I was watching a YouTube video or a Twitch stream, I get a message saying the shockwave plugin is not responding. This would then again cause an entire system lock up. I would then begin to attempt to open up task manager with the Ctrl+Shift+Esc combination. On my computer it would always instantaneously open up. During these experiences it does not show up at all. So I would then attempt to right click the taskbar to open Task Manager from the options there. The taskbar (as I'm assuming explorer was still hung) would not respond for a couple minutes until finally the menu pops up. I would then select Task Manager. After a short while (maybe 30 seconds) Task Manager would finally show up. It is here that I would see that there are two Task Manager processes. So I would attempt to kill one. I would select the one that was ~100 kb (which I'm assuming is the one that hasn't shown up yet as the other one had ~4000kb). This would be in vain as attempting to kill most processes was also in vain. So I started a round of anti virus and malware checks. I originally started with an Avast! boot time scan. I received an error of 42111. I looked into this and it seems as though Avast! was failing to scan an archived file. After this comp... Read more

I have been having some issues for the last couple of days with my computer.  I first experienced trouble with Firefox while watch a simple Twitch Stream.  For no reason (as the computer was completely idle save the stream) I received a message saying Shockwave Player (or some script on the page) stopped responding.  The popup gave me the option to wait for the script to respond, or to kill it.  I attempted to kill it, by opening up Task Manager.  This took maybe 3 minutes to open up, while in the process hung my entire system the whole time, and then led to Firefox itself to completely lock up.  As well, when attempting to open up Task Manager in the first place, if at first the window did not show up I would attempt to open it again.  The first time by using the Ctrl, Shift, Escape combination, and when that was unsuccessful (as it normally pops up instantly), I would thusly right click the taskbar to open it that way.  By doing this method it would take minutes for the popup from the taskbar itself to showup.  After finally getting Task Manager open, I would see two different Task Manager processes.  One at roughly 4k kilobytes of memory, while the other ~100.  As someone with a tiny bit of OCD I would close the smaller kilobyte one by right clicking it to kill the process from the popup menu.  Right clicking the process would give me no window, nor would hitting kill process from the tab on the Task... When I go to the Favorites bar, right-click and choose "New folder" in the context menu, it just starts with the spinning blue circle and I have to kill IE from the Task Manager.  I can add a folder from the "Organize Favorites"
menu without a problem.  I am using Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit.  IE version 11.  I already tried uninstalling IE11 and reverting to IE9.  The problem was still there.  I reinstalled IE11 and the problem still exists.  I
also tried running it in "no add-ons" mode.  I also tried a reset of the settings under Advanced Options.  Nothing has helped yet.  Any suggestions?
By the way, I don't have this problem with Windows Explorer.  I can add new folders via the context menu without a problem in Windows Explorer.

So I was using my computer all day yesterday then around 9:30pm my computer kept freezing while running firefox. I restarted and it did it again. I rebooted and opened internet explorer and the same thing kept happening. It had been a while since Ive done a fresh install so I thought that this would be a good time to do one. Backed everything up and reinstalled. Everything runs great now. Here's the problem. All of my clients are calling me with the same problem. I can quite put my finger on it. It seems like a virus but I cant get a scanner to detect anything. Could it be a virus or possibly a windows update? Anyone else having this issue? I amy end up just reinstalling computers all day.Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

I have been warned by my internet service that my PC has a malware called "Trojan: Mebroot" and my internet will later be suspended if I do not fix it.

If my computer is started normally, after a period of time it tends to freeze/crash and sometimes even display a bluescreen. Also, if i press ctrl+printscreen+c it will also freeze my computer.

At the moment, I am still using this computer but started on "Debugging Mode" and my computer doesn't freeze (unless I try to do a screenshot). My internet supplier (OPTUS) still warns me to remove the virus otherwise they will suspend my internet.

So this has been happening for a while now, whenever I try to log in to a website that I am registered on, as soon as I enter my Username and Password and click okay the browser freezes. This happens in both IE and Firefox. Every now and then, (usually immediately after i boot up my computer) it won't freeze up when i attempt to log in (which is how I managed to log into bleepingcomputer) but like I said that only works every so often and only if its one of the first things I do after booting up the PC. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition, SP3, on a part-by-part-built computer.

Sunday night everything was running alright. Monday, everything went to heck in a hand basket.

I regularly multi-task with a few programs open, and other processes running. This time, I was watching a video file in Windows Media Player, had a Firefox browser open, along with a notepad, some accounting software (I have a home office), an excel spreadsheet, and possibly a couple other inconsequential things. All things I've had open simultaneously before, with no problems. A problem I've had before, the sound device not being detected, happened. That is usually fixed with a restart, and doesn't happen very often. Right on the heels of my sound going away, however, every program I had open began to quit. On excel and notepad I got the dialog asking if I'd like to save my changes. I clicked cancel on both, as I didn't want them to close, but they immediately did anyway. As soon as all the programs were closed, the computer shut down. I booted up again, and saw my sound was still missing. I hopped online to see if I could find a fix for it, however my internet connection stopped working, even though the icon in the system tray still showed a connection. I tried to repair the wireless connection, however it wouldn't go past "Disabling wireless adapter" and that window was unresponsive after that. I rebooted again, using the brief time between startup and the connectio... Read more

For unknown reasons, my laptop started freezing at boot for about 3,4 minutes resulting in an explorer crash at boot up. Then it's up seemingly running fine. The first error in the administrate log file is "The Pure Networks Device Discovery Driver service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified." . This is apparently a non-removable piece of garbage from when I had a cisco/linksys router over a year ago. But I can't find "Pure Networks" anywhere. I deleted all folders to Cisco. MSE finds nothing and it seems not to be a hack but who knows.
If I disable these 2 services, it boots up w/o hanging (but there are other problems)

Sometimes when I'm doing a search on My Computer or Windows Explorer, the program will suddenly freeze, & I'll have exit via the "not responding" dialogue. The computer screen clears, and when it reappears, some of the programs I was running in memory have disappeared ... eg, I'm running a registered version of "Say The Time", and that program disappears, and will only reappear if I log off & on again.

Hey RPT,

I noticed you were having an Outlook problem as well. Hmmmmm.....I think you may have caught something. Now mind you, I'm not an expert on Hijack This logs, but I think that might shed some light on this blackhole you seem to be in.

Please do this. Go here http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ and download Hijack This. Un Zip it and click on the Hijachthis.exe.
Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply. Do NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

The log may very well reveal the source of the problem.

Ok, I've done my share of searching, and it seems like I'm the only one with this issue. On Win 7 (both x86 and x64), my x200t with the older multitouch screen freezes when I change the screen resolution, either by connecting a projector or by rotating the screen.Going to portrait mode will freeze explorer.exe for about 5 seconds, while going back to landscape will take 30+ seconds, if not more. I've lost count of how many times I reinstalled various versions of win 7 just to see what happens, in vain, of course. I can't seem to pinpoint on the exact driver. It's definitely not the graphics adapter. I've tried the ones from intel, lenovo, and ms. Either things get worse, or there's no change. This has been driving me crazy, but I just found the time to post this over here. Does anyone else have this problem? Could it be a hardware issue? I think I might have to request some sort of replacement if I don't find any solution here.

Hi, a day or two ago I've had a problem where if I right click on a file or folder (any type) the wheel will turn up but won't load. Usually it will cause the explorer to crash. I am still able to view the video or music file at this time but right clicking will not work. At first i thought this was caused by iTunes as that won't open up either. However, upon restarting it will work just fine. I am able to right click and also open iTunes. I have figured out this may be caused after I wake my computer up from sleeping or hibernating. I have tested this out multiple times and it happens all the time. When i try to log out or shut down (or simply restart also) the wheel keeps spinning while saying Shutting down. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but I just wanted to include it as this is started to happen at the same time. I'm not really certain whats causing this after waking my computer up. I hope I explained this clearly but if I haven't please let me know. I'm on a 64 bit, Windows 7 computer.

I am running windows XP home edition SP 2, accessing internet via Road Runner. I upgraded Internet Explorer. It froze so I killed it and restarted again. It finished properly the second time, or so it seemed.

IE7 ran OK the first time. The 2ns time it froze on a blank window. No toolbars, no status bar, no nothing, just the frame and blank inside.

Other symptoms: Internet Options opens up OK from the control panel, and every tab seems OK, but when I go connections, LAN settings, the button shows depressed, and the thing freezes.

I can access the WWW without a problem via Firefox. Outlook sends and receives email without a hitch. But any program that checks internet options to see about proxy settings or similar, freezes. Example Intellicast and the Zinio reader. Example the setup program for Max Registry Cleaner and Registry Mechanic.

I ran a virus scan with AVG. The machine was clean. I cleaned up the registry with RegistryFix. There were a lot of lose ends, now it is clean. I ran AVG Anti Spyware. It has a residue of 45 tracking cookies, nothing else. I uninstalled Intellicast and the Zinio reader. Nothing made a difference.

For the past few weeks, about 1/2 hour after booting my computer up in the morning, whatever program I'm using at the moment will stop responding. If I continue to try to get it to respond, its screen will dim and I get the message "Not responding". The disk activity light goes on 100%. To a certain extent I can still get to other programs that are already running, but I can't open new ones. Usually, if I just sit and wait, after about 30-60 sec everything will be ok again; other times nothing will happen for several minutes after which I'll get a BSOD with the message "Windows was shut down..." and

Initializing disk for crash dump ...

Because of this, I've been running Process Explorer. When the problem occurs I can switch to it if it's on the second screen of my dual-screen system. When I do so, almost everything seems normal:

Physical Memory 3.0 GB

Disk 0 kB
The abnormal indication is that the disk shows 0 kB even though the disk activity indicator is on 100% of the time. The list of processes shows Avast (anti-virus program) and System to have overwhelmingly the largest I/O Read Bytes, but this doesn't seem abnormal.

Hello:

I tried refreshing Firefox, tried using only Internet Explorer (instead of Firefox), and still the
computer freezes and has to be rebooted manually.

I've run malwarebytes, avast, superantispyware, TDSS, RogueKiller, JRT, and others to see if I
can self-diagnose. Tried following advice on other threads to no avail. Even tried Combofix.
Also restored to a previous version without success. Problem started when trying to watch
something on Vimeo (though that could be coincidence).

It's been a week or two of trying out different solutions. Help!

Hello,

As you can see by the title I am having several problems but I believe they are all caused by the same malware.

Platform:

Windows XP SP3, "all" updates

F-Secure Internet Security 2008

Firefox 3.0.9 as preferred browser

The symptoms:

If I click on a google search result I am occasionally redirected away from the actual website to some other website usually an ad and I must go back to get the real site.

If I attempt to run Cmd.exe from the run dialog nothing appears and explorer crashes (the blue bar at the bottom goes away which I believe is indication of this) then when it reloads my tray bar is missing several of its components.

I have also tried to run cmd.exe from a file browser, but it will just not run. However, if I copy the file and rename it to foo.exe, then it runs just fine.

Windows update shows me a single high priority update (.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1), but when I try to install it, it freezes.

Frequent "generic hos process" crashes caused by svchost.exe

As opposed to other people I have seen posting with similar problems, I have no problems accessing web sites belonging to antivirus companies, or bleepingcomputer.com.

Attempted fixes:

I ran ATF cleaner

F-Secure full scan, found nothing

Kaspersky online scan, found nothing

Malware Bytes Anti Malware, found nothing. Strangely, it could not update itself, so I had to download the latest database file manually.

Super Antispyware, found nothing

Ok internet explorer is not working niether firefox. About 2 weeks ago i went on my computer and an when i tried to go on any website it would not work. Seconds after, a firefox update starts but it does not do anything and the internet does not work.
-I have Norton But removed all Norton content from computer still did not do anything.
-before deleting Nortan Scanned for viruses no viruses were found
Safe mode WORKS, i figured out that by doing doing a system restore and going to a restore point will restore my computer and internet works everything is fine. BUT it is very annoying having to keep doing system restore because after i do system restore and turn off computer when i turn it back on its all over again the update and sites not working.

I know my internet works because with/without system restore internet games work perfectly fine.

Although keep doing system restore is really annoying it doesnt work anymore when i try 2 restore to a previouse point it loads and then says system restore incomplete there was no restore points found for that date although im certain there was because i used the same date like twice before. Gahh this is so frustrating my computer is like an old car reck. help is very appreciated!

Hi to everybody. I have read tons of forums about this issue and I tried to do what advised, but I couldn't solve this issu with my PC.
I upgraded my system 1 month ago, but I didn't achieve a stable configuration. New componets are MB, CPU, RAM and SSHD. I have suspects on PSU even nominal power should be ok.

---PC Configuration:

Windows 7 64-bit
Intel Core i7-4770K
Asus Z87-K
KHX2133C11D3K4/16GX Kingston HyperX (4x4GB) Memory
Ati Radeon HD5850
Crucial MX100 2.5" 256GB SATA III Solid State Drive
PSU Modular Power Supply ATX 700W

mouse advent wireless
---Symptoms:

Immediately after the boot, the graphic card fan starts increasing speed and then the system freezes. If I disable and re-enable the graphic card, fan stops overunning immediately and run normally; the system freezes later, randomly.
After 3-4 hard resets, the system asks me to restore the system. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

After downgrading the graphic drivers, the system appeared stable for some days. But now it started again freezing in a different way: rather than increasing the card's fan speed, the graphic card starts flickering. It stops if I disable and re-enable the graphic card, but it starts again after few minutes and the system freezes.

Freezing mechanism: explorer stops responding, but the mouse pointer is still working. After 20-30 seconds mouse freezes as well. It happens randomly in idle state, using google chrome or ... Read more

Unless the new hardware you fitted is almost identical to the old, which I doubt, you should do a clean install of Windows. The main reason is the drivers from the old stuff are still around and are messing things up.

Recently, my internet connection has been freezing intermittently during normal activities. The screen and mouse freeze and the screen totally blacks out. On occasion, it completely shuts down and reboots itself, but other times I am able to restore the screen by clicking and moving the mouse. Upon trying to resolve this issue myself, I thought the problem was caused by a download from an addon through Firefox. I completely disabled it, but this has not solved the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Guys,

New here and signed up because I cannot figure out what to do.

For a little while, Firefox web browser (google) links have been redirecting me to other sites. Just random sites that have nothing to do with what I was searching. I've ignored it as haven't had time to work on it- Big mistake. A couple days ago I got infected with Internet Security 2010 (a rogue anti-spyware program). I removed it using Malwarebytes.

However, since then my internet (both firefox and more so IE) freezes on me almost anytime I go on it. Not only will internet freeze but then it usually also freezes my computer and then I have to reboot. I have AVG anti-virus and neither that or Malwarebytes has detected anything (I ran both scans yesterday).

As you can tell I'm not completely computer savy so if there's an complicated procedures to run please let me know how to do so.

Please any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Update- Ran a scan with Housecall, but it did not find any threats.

Hello,

I'm not really sure where to post something like this. The Shockwave Flash plugin crashes multiple times daily for me. The error message says "The following plugin has crashed: Shockwave Flash". I use Chrome the most, but it happens to me on IE and Firefox, as well. An interesting thing I've noticed is that when it happens, it basically freezes my internet connection. I can't open new tabs, open any type of Messenger service, etc. without getting an error message stating that there is no internet, etc.

In doing my own research, most people have suggested disabling the "duplicate" version of Flash in Chrome://plugins, however I only have one running. I have reinstalled Chrome, reinstalled Flash, reinstalled my AV software, all to no avail. I am at a loss here and it is frustrating, to say the least. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I value your time and effort.

I am running on Win7 and creating this post in Chrome. Please let me know what I can do to be more informative.

Thanks!

I was wondering if my video was going out on the mother board. I have a P4 Dell Optiplex 170L with 1.5 gb memory. Surfing the web is fine but when I go to videos on DVD or Youtube, the video screen locks up....

What should I do?

1) See if I can increase memory on the motherboard's video? How do I do that?

2) Get another video card and deactivate the video abilities on the motherboard? How about a gaming video card?

3) Keep video setting lower than the current settings of 2048 x 1152 32-bit?

4) Get another browser, such as Chrome.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. The computer runs fine without playing a video.

thanks,
Dave

A:XP - Internet Expl. or Firefox freezes up during video

Hi

The first thing I would do before tampering with any settings, (especially if you are unsure of how to do it), would be to ensure that all drivers and codecs are up to date. Only yesterday I was prompted to update Flash player which I believe is the codec used by youtube.
As you have already stated, you could try lowering the graphics quality to its minimum spec and increase incrementally until a problem occurs thus identifying your ideal quality level.

However if all facets are current then to answer point 1 of your question, you need to go into the bios (Usually F2 at boot) and look for the graphics settings, however the option to make changes is only available on some machines.

It would be useful to know how long your system has been working fine for and how long this problem has been in effect.

Hope this is of some help and sorry if it is difficult to follow, first time posting a response, so I know what I want to say but not how to say it!

All the best

Hi!

I have the req.dat problem, and I have deleted the file with moveonboot. However, it still seems to load. There is no (file missing) tag in the HJT listing under the O2 and O20 entries and the req bho has reappeared in the loaded IE add-on list. However, the file req.dat is gone from the windows/system32 folder. I can't find it manually, by search or even add it for deletion in either hjt or moveonboot.

I also tried to remove the registry entries manually and to unregister req.dat using regsvr32. It said req.dat was loaded but it could not find the entry point and it did not seem to be a dll.

And, yes I have tried in safe mode as well.

I Visited Other Forums And Did All Suggestions Like: Uninstalling Explorer And Reinstalling It Back; Scanning For Viruses; Uninstalling Anti-virus Softwares Etc. But The Pc Still Freezes.

If Anyone Has Ideas Please Let Me Know.

Thanks.

Bobby

you upgrade to xp pro from what? Do you have the same problem with other browsers? If you have not tried another browser, give another a try to see if its an ie problem or something else.

I have Vista Home Premium. Lately Internet Explorer seem to freeze often. I have 2 gb ram and the 320 gb disk is 20% full. What could be the reason? I purchased the computer some 18 months ago and the problem started only in the last month.

Besides my dislike of IE for similar reasons, there are things you can do. Clean out your history and temp internet file. You can go into Internet-->options in control panel and do this manually and set them to be deleted every day or so. I use a program called Window washer to clear everything once a day. It does a great job-made by Webroot. Spyware has recently surged tremendously. Download some free spyware removal tools such as SpyBot, Ad-aware--they do a reasonable job. I tried PCTOOLs Spyware Doctor which is top rated. However, I just changed to Stopzilla as it found a lot of stuff that the Doctor missed. That's kind of the way it is dealing with spyware crap. There are also some Tune Up utilities you can get that will help. Another big one to check is your registry. Most people like Registry Mechanic and I use it myself. You can hunt around and find some free ones I imagine but I've been happy with reg Mechanic. When all else fails, just forget IE and download Firefox--it's free-and it works A LOT better. It opens faster, changes pages faster and you can import all your IE favorites. Anyway, hope some of this helps. I FEEL your pain!!

I use Windows XP and I have IE7. For a couple of days its refused to load. The screen comes up, and freezes before my homepage can load. I have to bring up the task manager to close it. Also when I use firefox a message keeps coming up that asks if I want to make IE my default browser, which also freezes and again, up comes the task manager.
I don't really care that much and IE irritates me anyway, but my mum likes it and while she could be converted to firefox I'd have to find a way to transfer the bookmarks to FF, and I can't figure out how to do it if I can't use IE.
I'm also new, and fairly bad with jargon so please be nice to me

Installed Win 7 on May 5. Seemed to work well. Started having problems with IE8 freezing when it opens. Sometimes I can ctl, alt, del and close it out, but more often I have to reboot. I also have firefox and it seems to work fine.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot?

Thanks for any help or comments.

Try resetting IE to default, that should fix it, go to the advanced internet options and select Reset.

It is few days that IE tends to freeze while surfing the web. No special indication.

Here is the Event Viewer Application Error report

"Hanging application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16544, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000."

Any help appreciated

Thx
