Bizarre goings on updating Radeon 5650 card in Acer Laptop

Q: Bizarre goings on updating Radeon 5650 card in Acer Laptop

Inherited Acer Aspire 5553g from my dad, a few years old but still good specs. AMD Phenom II X4, 6gB of RAM and and ATI Mobility Radeon 5650 GPU.

Yesterday bought Planetary Annihilation. All within laptop specs. Run first time but crashes because video driver is out of date.

Download the correct patch from AMD website and run their clean-up utility.

Then run the patch (14-4-mobility-win7-win8-win8.1-64-dd-ccc-whql.exe). After apparently successful installation and restart there is no evidence that the GPU has been installed correctly and my resolution is still way off.

Check the device settings in My computer and says that a 5000 series ATI card is installed as well as a 4200 card (????). I decide to uninstall it but as soon as I'm done, windows notifies me that it is installing the driver for a 4200 card. However, the resolution still won't go above 1024x768 in the settings and steam can't detect a graphics card installed at all. Ontop of this, planetary annihalation still won't work.

Has anyone got any ideas? Could it just be something to do with what Acer have done with laptop? What's the deal with the 4200 card; as far as I'm aware I should only have a 5650 in here.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Bizarre goings on updating Radeon 5650 card in Acer Laptop

A few things to note here:

First and foremost, the only recommended source for laptop drivers is from the laptop manufacturer. Any other source you are trying your luck as the drivers have not been configured for your exact hardware.

Second, many laptops with a "highend" chipset, also have a low end chipset for normal everyday use which uses less power. So it's possible there are two chipsets in that model as well. As for drivers, note above.
I will also point out that in regards to gaming, that laptop specs have to exceed the recommendations to actually work well. This is because laptop hardware and desktop hardware (even the same chipset) are not equal. So if you look up the benchmarks for a desktop 5650 gpu and the laptop (ie: mobile) 5650, you will see the laptop benchmarks are slower.

Having said all of that, your current issue appears to be video driver related.

is what I think it is, then sorry we can't help you till you get a legit copy of Windows. From what I can see that is an illegal version that is pre-cracked and heavily modified, both of which make it hard to help you. The first is because we don't help with illegal software, and being heavily modified makes it that we can't even begin to help because we don't know what has been removed.

The above title says it all. Homefront I get 30 fps on absolute lowest settings (I refuse to set the resolution down from 1600by900 it's horrible below it). Most games run so so on medium settings getting like 30 fps but I noticed in Call of Duty 4 (a 4 year old game) that on the absolute lowest settings I get between 45-60 fps, on ultra from 20-35... I mean on lowest isn't it supposed to be 100 fps plus? Look at the benchmarks here

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Have an Acer Aspire 7745G

1st gen i5 460M @2.53 Ghz

8gb ram

ati mobility radeon 5650 & Intel GMA HD (and use, its using the ati card NOT the GMA)

Windows 7 Home 64 bit

Please help. I know this isn't the best graphics card but its supposed to be a mid level graphics card and should at least run COD4 on ultra with 35 fps+ at all times.

Maybe something I should play round with in the Catalyst? I have all settings on factory defaults at the moment, latest drivers as well (Catalyst 11.12)

Edit: Something might be wrong with my computer. I tried to see how my GMA would respond, COD4 has fps of 5 on lowest settings, counter strike source has 15 on lowest settings and a few months ago when I last checked it had 70+fps on CSS... so something might be affecting both cards, in windows 7 control panel I have it set on full performance though...

A:ATI Radeon 5650 Low FPS and high MS

Who's to say its your graphics card? Lack or ram or under powered cpu can cause low FPS.
Your computer is only as powerful as the slowest component.

It could well be your GPU but you could have had a ram stick die, and or windows updates now require more system resources so hence its struggling.

Hello everyone! I've come over a problem that's a little bit annoying. I had to reinstall my laptop with Windows 7 and it's worked, but there's a problem - the display driver isn't right. My actual monitor can use 1366x768, but for some reason there's this weird 'Generic PnP Monitor' that I've never had before which limits the resolution to 1024x768. I do not know where this has come from, but I don't see my ATI Radeon HD 5650 in the device list any more. I tried to download the ATI drivers using the 'autodownload' feature, (It basically searches for ATI drivers and downloads them for you) but It said it could not install them What can I do?
(I had to clean install W7 because of a boot problem I had.)

A:Radeon HD 5650 replaced with PnP Monitor

You have to get the driver for it from Toshiba. Toshiba and a couple of other laptop manufacturers (Sony and Panasonic are the others) won't allow the use of reference AMD drivers (or Nvidia for that matter), and as a result you have to get the driver directly from them or use one with a modded INF that has added the appropriate device string to it.

Hi guys,

I tried to understand you sticky postings but I am just a normal windows user and this is beyong my knowledge and understanding. Kindly help me out with some hints, wht I need to do:

Trouble: Installed the purchased upgrade of Win8 over Win7. Running a HD mobility Radeon HD 5650 GFX. Worked all fine for 1,5 years under win7, now, after the update, I have that yellow sign in front of the gfx card in hardware manager - guess, its misisng the driver?!

Tried solutions:
Downloaded and installed ACER (my laptop) recommended gfx driver from acer page for my system. Restarted. Still yellow. Went to AMD, downloaded catalyst 12.10 and deinstalled old, installed 12.10. Still yellow.
Right clicked "update driver" on hardware screen/gfx and selected ACER downloaded win8 driver. Nothing.

Damn, I am trying since 2 days now and I am about to give up on win8. Wont recommend to anyone since this is rediculous for normal users.

Any hints?

The laptop I'm having problems with is an HP Envy 14 with an i5-520, ATI Radeon HD 5650 / Intel HD Graphics, 6 GB RAM, and is running Windows 7 x64. I think the video card driver is causing graphical issues in some of my games (i.e. The Sims 3, Divinity 2). The problem itself is hard to describe other than things look really distorted and streaky. The games worked fine when I last played them a while ago, but after updating the video card driver and going back to test them, they no longer do. I only updated the driver yesterday when I noticed the textures in a newly installed game were so poor it was as if I had the settings on low. In fact, the Intel GPU performed much better. Updating the driver didn't fix it. I noticed the problems with Divinity 2 right before I updated the driver so I'm not sure what that means. I know I didn't have any issues when I initially played it a year ago. The Sims 3 I know was working fine several weeks ago, but I hadn't played it again until after doing the update yesterday. So I'm not sure if it's the driver update causing issues or just something else going on with the video card.

I've tried uninstalling the drivers, reinstalling them, rolling them back, and installing an older version. The version I updated to is 8.771.1.0 but when I try to rollback or install the older version, the device manager still says its the newer version (older one is 8.741.1.3000). I'm not sure if I'm just doing so... Read more

Hi,

Not sure if this is in the right place or not ...

For some reason (I don't know why!!!) I decided to check for the latest driver for the above graphics card that I've got in my Dell Studio laptop - running Win 7.

I downloaded the AMD autodetect tool and it said I should upgrade to a newer driver ... so I did.

Problem is, my screen resolution should be 1600 x 900 but when the update had finished (it crashed and re-booted) my screen looked like only 1152 x 864.

So, I went in to Control Panel to change the resolution back to 1600 x 900 but, that option didn't exist in the list of display sizes - the options ranged from 800 x 600 to 1152 x 864!

so I wonder what I've done and what I need to do to get my screen back to 1600 x 900.

Thanks in advance.

Hey guys,

My problem is that the only drivers I can use up to now is the last one certified by Alienware dating 2010. There are more recent ones (2013) but everytime I try to update blue screens of death and brutal crashes occur every minute.

As you can imagine, the compatibility problems keep accumulating. Would somebody have some advice as to getting me to use the 2013 drivers ?

Fire up Device Manager and look at your Display Adapters. Make sure yours reflects the graphics set you actually have and not Basic Display Adapter (the latter is what is used if Windows can't find a driver for your actual hardware). Once you are sure the right drivers are loaded check to see if they have any options for how much memory is used and whether that memory is shared between processor and video.

So I just purchased this new Acer laptop.
It has a Radeon HD 6650M, and an i7-2360QM with HD Graphics 3000. The Graphics processor within the i7 is the primary VGA and I cant get the computer to utilize the Radeon. Its supposed to be switchable with the catalyst drivers to run off the i7 for increased battery life, and the Radeon when pluged into an outlet. I've downloaded the Drivers off of asus' website and that did nothing. And when I open The Catalyst Control Center, it gives me the option to use "High Performance Graphics" this of course does nothing. The computer still runs off of the i7.

I contacted Asus technical support via online chat, and they had no idea what they were talking about, sying something along the lines of "You need to take out your new AMD card and put in another and see if that works." I told them several times that I had a laptop and no option of switching graphics cards. so I'm hoping someone here can at least guide me in the right direction.

Since I still might RMA this laptop, I don't want to do anything too crazy to get access to the Radeon. But I will accept crap battery life if that means I get to at least use the Radeon.
The Catalyst Driver version is 8.813.1.0

A:Acer Laptop: Switchable Graphics using i7 & AMD Radeon

First, I suggest that you restore your original driver setup from when you first got this laptop while you perform tests of this new graphics system. In recent years the graphics drivers for both video chips had to be installed together as a package, and installing the stand-alone driver for the AMD or nVidia chip screwed things up for some folks.

That said, please be aware that I just started reading about these new graphics chips this week. I am hardly up to speed and certainly no expert.

But it is my impression, based upon this article here (nVidia Optimus, I know - but AMD and nVidia tend to mirror each other in technology):
Nvidia Unveils Optimus Switchable Graphics Technology | PCWorld
it sounds to me like the more powerful graphics chip does not "kick in" until you are actually doing something that requires more graphics power.

Here is the AMD article:
AMD Switchable Graphics Technology
While it is not clear, it could be assumed that they are doing the same thing.

Not having complete control over my computers settings would drive me right out of my mind! If these new graphics chips only run on automatic that is a real negative for me.

Let's see if others with more experience with these chips will chime in. I think this thread would be better in the Graphics Cards section for best exposure to the people who might know. I'll see what I can do about that.

Hi Martel.

What you're describing is not typical malware behavior. My first suspicion points towards a malfunctioning or failing keyboard. If something was spilled on the laptop that could easily explain the malfunctions in both mouse and keyboard since they are located in such close proximity on the laptop. If you have them available, try connecting a USB mouse or keyboard to the laptop and see if the issue persists while using those.

Hello everyone,

I've encountered a serious issue with my Acer Swift 3 laptop and I'm really hoping someone can help. I believe it is software related but I can't yet rule out hardware either- I hope I'm posting in the right place.

The Problem:
Last night, in a tired state, I unplugged my Acer Swift 3 laptop during the shutdown sequence. I don't believe this should cause an issue but I usually don't do it as I prefer to wait until the machine is off. Anyway, the laptop was fully charged by this point. The moment I pulled the cable the system shut off (any difference from the normal completion of the shutdown sequence was almost imperceptible but nonetheless alarm bells rang).

I tried to turn my laptop back on but nothing happened. I followed up by plugging it back in and trying again. Whilst plugged in the laptop booted up fine but Windows presented a "Windows didn't shut down properly" alert and I instructed it to load into Windows proper. Once I reached Windows 10 the system behaved abnormally in two ways:

1. The battery icon in the task bar seemed...confused. It presented as empty for one moment, then full.

2. The system seemed to shut down after a few seconds (around a minute, roughly). I say "seemed" because it's plausible that it is going into some sort of low power mode- either way it goes through the normal booting process when I press the power button again (only to once again shut down a short time late...

I have a laptop HP Pavilion 15-p110nr: AMD A10-5745M with AMD Radeon HD 8610G 768MB integrated graphics cardAMD Radeon R7 M260 2GB (dedicated graphics card)6GB RAMWindows 8.1 64 bit The problem is that the laptop refuses to make any use of the R7 m260... for video games and everything, it's always using the integrated HD 8610G. The laptop detects the R7 card, as it is shown in the device manager, as well as a 'linked card' on the CCC and on other programs like AMD System Monitor. But the card simply doesn't do it's job, it doesn't start working. I've used the AMD System Monitor to check if it had any activity, and it's always 0. I have read many other posts on the internet about people with the same problem, and I've tried every solution that people suggested, without any luck: - I have used the Catalyst Control Center to control the Switchable Graphics and set my games to high performance. This should make the R7 be the main graphics card for that videogame, but it doesn't work. There's also a switchable graphics monitor in the CCC, I activate it to see what card is being used when playing a game, but even the monitor doesn't work! it doesn't show the game's .exe (I've tried different games like GTA V, Skyrim or TDU2). - I've read you can just disable the integrated graphics card on the BIOS, but I don't have that option on my BIOS... And if I disable it on the Windows Device Manager, the R7 still doesn't start working, but instead, th... Read more

I have an HP Envy 17t 3000 CTO Notebook PC Product# LW900AV Every so often I would get the message "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" for quite a while but was never able to fix the problem. Then I started to get the blue screen of death which said something about a memory dump and a memory driver. Usually I would hold down the power button and restart it.

Then while in regular windows mode the screen got all staticy, upon restarting I got to the windows logo, then I'd see a black screen with static in it and it never fully started. I can go into safe mode with no problems, graphics or otherwise.

Going into Device Manager I deleted the AMD Radeon HD 7690 M XT Graphics driver, then restarted, and it would start and run fine with the other driver (Intel driver) until Windows loaded another driver for the Radeon driver (I couldn't stop it) after loading the screen would go blank again. Nothing found online so far has fixed the problem.

I then went into Recovery and went back to factory settings. Which worked for a few hours, everything worked fine. Then I started to get the static again, to the point I'm right back to where I started.

Can anyone tell me exactly what the problem is? Hardware or Driver? Why did it work temporarily? Is it possible to totally disable the Radeon driver for good, where it doesn't reload when restarted? My computer has two graphics drivers (not sure why) Is there a way to use the other driver instead (the Inte... Read more

A:Problem with AMD Radeon graphics card on my HP Envy Laptop

I can't tell you how to turn off the Radeon card for good, as that information isn't in the HP Envy manuals that I was able to find, but I can tell you a few things.

1. It sounds like a hardware problem. The Radeon card may be failing. The other possibility is that the Radeon driver is becoming corrupted somehow (how I don't know, and it's a bit of a mystery as to how it could become corrupted)

2. The computer has two graphics cards in it. One for low power general use (the Intel) and one for more demanding graphics duties (the Radeon). In your laptop, whichever card is used is supposed to be switchable.

3. It works properly in Safe Mode because the laptop only loads the Intel drivers in Safe Mode, not the ATI/Radeon driver. Therefore the Radeon card is not being used in Safe Mode, so it will always appear to work properly.

Since it's out of warranty, you might want to have it evaluated by a trained technician. The graphics card may have to be replaced (if it even can be - some cant be). Get a quote first on how much the evaluation will cost, and how much a graphics card will cost if that turns out to be the trouble. If its a significant chunk of a new laptop's cost, you might want to reconsider fixing that one, and just buy another.

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 on my rather old and aging laptop. Doing so, I've developed a frequent but random problem where if my web browser loads or closes a tab that has a video embedded into it, it will freeze the entire computer-- no BSOD, just nothing moves, including the mouse. If sound was playing, it stays at a steady buzz. Once the system is frozen, the only solution is to hold down the power button on the laptop and hard reboot it.

This doesn't happen for every video, longer videos are more likely to freeze my system, but even long videos SOMETIMES work.

This never happened with Windows 7, and I highly suspect that it is the fault of the video drivers for my legacy ATI Radeon HD 3870 x2 cards. My driver version is 8.970.100.9001, which is the most recent driver available on the ATI webpage.

I've tried completely uninstalling my graphics drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller from safe mode, selecting the option to not allow the same driver to be reinstalled automatically upon reboot, however, on reboot, my system showed the exact same driver version, so I guess windows reinstalled the driver anyway.

Freezes are getting more common. Just browsing facebook is a minefield now, since if any videos are on my wall, just scrolling down might cause the entire system to freeze.

Does anyone have any suggestions for other things I could try? Is there some other legacy driver for my card that might work?

Hello Iunnrais Welcome to the Ten Forums!

Sounds like it's time! Time for a full clean install that is! First you will want to look for at least 8.1 updates for the model you have there! When not finding any 10 drivers in general available the 8.1 are the closest to 10 compatibility wise and should work without problems.

Since you saw the upgrade from 7 to 10 turn out buggy as all too often being seen when jumping three versions newer the Clean Install after considering a total wipe of the old drive there if that is not seeing problems by the way would tend to insure the best working results.

On a HP laptop that came with the 32bit 7 Home Premium back in 2012 being upgraded to 10 there wasn't any hesitation on seeing the batched up upgrade immediately replaced by a second clean install! Following the second 32bit clean install that once the OEM stuff was nuked off entirely saw the 64bit 10 Home install go on! Unfortunately the drive and no longer seeing anything come up when powering it up on the display resulted in seeing a replacement Toshiba laptop with 10 already on ordered in January! Being only 3yrs. old and finding the drive was stuffed once it was later placed in an external usb enclosure is why a look at the drive would be recommended as well as seeing a nice clean install take place.

I have an Acer Aspire 5520-5912 laptop running Vista Home Premium, 32 bit

A couple of days ago, the wireless card stopped working; the device manager does not show the card. We tried a different card, but it still does not recognize that a card is present.

Where do I start? Would upgrading to Windows 7 help? Should I just give up and buy a USB wireless card?

BTW, not all the USB ports work on this thing. The webcam also died, even though the system thinks it is there.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
FYI, we have 2 other laptops that are running on the LAN without a problem, so I don't think it has anything to do with that.

Thanks for your help!

A:will any sd memory card do for acer laptop

HI George Pretty much any SD card will work in your Acer laptop, however, make sure you buy a well known make from a reputable dealer. There are quite a few fakes around, which will cause a lot of grief! You can use either standard SD or the newer SDHC ones if your laptop is made after 2007/8. If it is an old laptop, then use the standard SD.

hi there, i hope someone can help me out!

I've got an acer aspire 3690 running vista home basic (I know, I know, Vista is awful and should be discarded at once ...) and i'm having problems with the wireless card.

I've reinstalled the drivers for the broadcom wireless devices and in the device manager, it shows the card as installed and working correctly.

The problem i am having is that when i try to switch the wireless capablity on via the switch on the front of the laptop, a little green message pops up saying "No Wireless Device" so the card doesn't seem to be linked to the switch. I have reinstalled the acer launch manager which controls the all the buttons/toggles on the laptop but still to no avail.

Is there anything obvious I have missed?

Thanks in advance guys

Hi,

As the title suggests, the wireless card seemed to disappear on my wife's laptop. Windows Device Manager shows a code 10 for it, and the troubleshooter is useless for solving problems like this.

I've tried numerous times to uninstall and reinstall the device, but it always ends up having the little yellow exclamation mark beside it.

Any ideas on what to do with this?

Thanks,
Matt

Here goes...

For the past few days I have experienced system crashes while playing Siegelord S74 Horsley. I tried contacting the manufacturer for tech support and got put in a que, (I think I was 37 or something) which was going to take a great deal of time before reaching support. I then decided to choose the option to have them call me. I waited. No callback. Earlier today I was having the same issues with system crashes while playing and decided to look up the error: SYSTEM+THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. Microsoft website is where I got an answer, an answer that I couldn't get from tech support. I went ahead and updated the Display adapter AMD Radeon R9 255. Problem with Siegelord was fixed. And just this evening while playing tanki online I experienced a weird screen graphics glitch. Immediately I decided to roll back the driver, or at least tried to. But I am unable to click on roll back driver. Any suggestions?

A:Unable to rollback AMD Radeon R9 255 after Updating

Manually uninstall the AMD driver from the "uninstall programs list" or use "display driver uninstaller" from guru 3D.....it works.

Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 15.4.1.1

Then go to AMD's website and download the latest driver.

NOTE: When installing new GPU drivers, it's recommended to uninstall old driver before installing new driver. Installing GPU drivers over top old ones tend to have some issues.

Hello,

I am hoping if you could help me update my old version of ATI Radeon Express 1150 driver to the most current driver as well as updating any other out of date drivers. I am having trouble using the manufacturer's website and execute update. However, it brings me to a box saying, "Severe - This driver could not be updated, and therefore closed setup." Not sure if there's any other way to go about this issue.

I am currently using ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 on a Dell Vosotro Notebook 1000 and Windows XP Pro.

Thanks,
SunGadget.

I am having some problems updating my video drivers. My system is an HP Medai Center PC m7334n. I am running Windows XP SP2. The system does have the media center however I do not use it. 2GB ram, 250 GB hard drive, AMD Athlon 64X2 dual processor 3800+. The video card is a Visiontek X1300 series and X1300 secondary series. It is a low end PCI express card that did not require an additional hook up to the power supply. My TV tuner is an Hauppauge 950Q USB running WinTV7. I have been trying to update my video drivers but keep running into problems. The current drivers are on the CD that came with the video card. They are version 6.11 and the CD is identified as Visiontek. Using Driver Detective and had downloaded version 8.11 of the drivers and also found them at the Visiontek website. The download also includes ATI Catalyst Control Center.
I have used ATI's removal tool that comes with the download to remove all portions on ATI from my machine. Then running the installation everything seems to run smoothly. The install does require a restart and when restarted the screen is at a very low resolution and 8 bit color. My monitor is an HANNS-G HW191D with a resolution of 1440 by 900. I can change the resolution from the very low resolution to the 1440 by 900 but regardless of clicking Apply or telling Windows to accept these changes the resolution reverts to 640 by 480 (I think). The 32 bit color change seems to hold. I cannot find any way to keep my settings to the correct r... Read more
