Calibrating Notebook Battery - Odd Behavior

Q: Calibrating Notebook Battery - Odd Behavior

Hello,

Moved from Hardware Forum

I'd like to "CALIBRATE a new battery for an HP notebook. Why? because when I was playing a YouTube video directly from the new Battery after it was Fully charged..the video would not play in a most healthy way. I checked the BIOS and it has the latest from the HP website.
When I plug the computer with the AC adapter it plays healthier.

I assume as [any] Battery loses its charge that it might cause some issues..Correct?

What is the differences in the Terms: Full Hard Disc Test and Hard Drive Long DST Test?

In the BIOS Menu I did not see the term Full Hard Disc Test. I'm running the Hard Drive Long DST Test now. Is this correct? is there any harm in Calibration using this test?

Best way to Calibrate a battery?

Thanks again,
Raphael

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My wife has a two-year-old Samsung notebook. Recently when she unplugged it the machine cut off, even though the battery said 79% charged (it wouldn't charge any further). I figured that the battery was bad so I bought another one from Amazon.

This one charges to 100% percent and does exactly the same thing. I'm perplexed but think there's something going on with the motherboard that won't let it use battery juice, even if Windows 8.1 says it's 100% charged.

I've tried the hold the power button down for 1 min with the battery out trick to no avail.

Any ideas? I'm stumped and think I might need to get her another notebook.

Thanks, Robert

Installed keyboard sometimes only types 5 or 6 letters then behaves as if the control key was held.  Any new key selected would jump to the shortcut if applicable.  If I then select the print shortcut and close the print window, I can type five more letters/numbers.  Sometimes I can type a whole sentence before it does this. I have replaced the HDD, reset the bios to default.  All drivers are up to date, and there are no viruses.  However I could not load the 2010 Bios update because of an admin lock.

We were given several Optiplex 780s that I've been fixing up for family.
I did most of the work a couple years ago.
Have the last one and it needed a new CMOS battery - replaced it.
BIOS is A15
Installed a 500GB hard drive and tried to image it with a Win 7 64 image.
Will not boot gets to loading win then back to BIOS, then menu to launch repair.
When I go into the BIOS setup to try setting it for AHCI SATA mode it says no
boot device when trying to boot - this doesn't seem normal.
Also the boot order will not change.
Could the BIOS be screwed up?  Ideas?

I have a TrippLite backup. Basic model, 4 outlets for surge protection only, 4 for surge and battery back-up.

I'm working away a bit ago and my computer and monitors just...die. Black. Nothing. But everything else was fine. The power hadn't gone out. My calculator and lamp, plugged into the surge protector side, they're still on, never flickered. Two monitors and tower, plugged into the battery...out. The battery didn't beep. It just quit.

The unit is probably 18-24 months old. I have no beef with it if it's dead, I'm just surprised at HOW it died.

Mostly I'm just curious. Does this sound weird to anybody else or is this a typical death?

A:Bizarre Backup Battery Behavior

Yup, that happens. Electronics can just die, sometimes they go slowly and other times then work fine one second and are dead the next second and sometimes they partially fail.

I have used the search tool and found a few threads that rang similar to mine, but not quite. So I am creating a new one.

MAIN SYMPTOM/PROBLEM: Some mornings I will wake my computer from stand-by. Check an email. Begin typing out my reply. About three sentences in and the computer will just shut OFF, not shutDOWN, without any warning. Insanely irritating when it comes to lost drafts etc.

This has been happening on/off for about two months now. Suffice to say, I have been watching the battery LED's color status closer as a result. Solid green. Power options show on AC Power (Yes, permanently plugged in) and battery at 100%.

When the computer turns itself OFF the battery LED either flashes orange then eventually a solid orange.
15-20 minutes later a solid green and I start my computer with the ON button.
I will then check the power options and they will read the same as mentioned above.
On mornings like this, this may happen 1-2 more times in a row over an hour or so, then fully function without problem for an entire weekend or weeks at a time.

NOW... If I choose not to wait for the LED to turn green and turn the computer on and check the power options it shows the battery life way low (Sometimes 0%). In this case it will be seconds before it happens again, which is to be expected. I do have a couple battery power alarms that never go off when the battery gets to a certain percentage. So it seems to just skip from 100% to 0% literally in an instant. Yet, if this is... Read more

So im running my laptop off of my ac adapter because the battery is shot and wont hold a charge. My battery worked before but now for some reason it wont charge but it will run off of the a/c adapter. So i fooled around with the cord wiggling it and taking it in and out like 50 times. i go to bed and the next day i put my laptop on my desk but accidentally the ac adapter got unplugged. i didn't notice it and then i press the power button and Bam! it turns on. i log in and then find out im running off of a battery! its 24% charged and im flipping out. the 4 orange light 1 green light error pattern is still going on when im charging but now it works all of a sudden!? how is this possible?

This morning my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop did a strange thing.

AC adapter plugged in, boot was normal, did a few things and left it running. About an hour later, I noticed the battery LED was flashing red three times alternating with one green flash. Right clicked and opened Power Meter panel and found no battery detected

Rebooted and pulled AC Adapter out of back of machine before POST started. It would not boot...

Plugged AC Adapter bake in and powered up. Got a black screen that said something like "No battery recognized" ( not sure of the exact wording) "hit any key to continue'. I did so and machine booted normal after that. Checked power Panel again and still no battery detected.

Turned machine up side down and removed battery pack, looked things over and found nothing unusual. Plugged pack back in and everything returned to normal. Battery level was at 100%. Even rebooted again on battery power..

BTW... When I had the battery pack removed, I noticed it was cool to the touch.

My question... Anyone had anything like this happen... I'm assuming at this point a faulty connection, but it just came out of no where. I had not moved the machine or jarred it in any way. Just looking for some opinions as to alterenate ideas or experince.

look at the brass lead inside the battery port on the laptop itself.
one might be bent or scratched.

keeps it up---probably start thinking about buying a new battery

could be messed up inside where you can't see it.

after the battery shows 100% ----is it real hot to the touch or swelled up or
distorted.
if its swelled up or distorted after a few hours of the laptop being on is very
dangerous---battery could explode

I haven't been able to figure out what two of the blue function keys do. I browsed all the documentation, including the unabridged manual, but couldn't find a lexicon of any sort. They are the ones under F5 and F6. Both symbolize closed locks. The other one has a number nine in it and the other one a vertical arrow with dual heads. Neither seems to do anything. I thought the first one was a number lock for the integrated keypad, but appears not to be.

My other question regards a battery behavior I encountered just today with my brand new Latitude. I was doing a light web browsing when my system reached a thirty percent battery level. I was under power saving mode in Windows 10 Pro x64. All of a sudden the system turned off. When I plugged the AC charger in and pushed power button, I resumed into Windows logon screen, which suggest the system went into suspended state. I have set the threshold for that much lower. The reason for my worry is that now that I had resumed back to Windows, the battery appeared to be almost completely drained and showed just 2 percent charge left, as it had just a few minutes earlier showed 30 % and several hours of usage left. What I wanted to ask is that is this normal behavior or a sign of something wrong? Could a brand new laptop battery exhibit this erratic behavior? I have 18 hours of usage on the new laptop and not once before has the battery status took a leaps of any sort to either direction.

OK, I see there are a myraid of posts concerning this issue, but no fixes. Even the HP employee gave a link that does nothing and appears broken. I purchased and installed 8GB RAM and that didn't fix it. What a waste of money. And for HP to ignore all the posts about the problem is, frankly, disingenuine, reckless and bad business. There simply MUST be a fix or workaround for this.  IF I HAVE TO BUY A NEW COMPUTER, IT WILL NOT BE AN HP. Are you hearing me, HP? My statement says a lot. I have been computing for 21 years and only ever bought HP or Compaq. I use the computer for business and the state my computer is in currently is far from a shining example of streamlined productivity. Double, triple, quadruple clicking on single click stuff, no response clicking, clicks bring up multiple duplicate windows, click for new tab and 2 tabs pop up, insert or remove SD card nets low keyboard battery warning and on and on and on. What's going on? WHAT IS THE FIX? EDIT: as with most users, this all started with the Win10 upgrade last Fall.

Hi,I have a Dell Inspiron 15 3542 laptop, and the battery life (as what it is saying) usually reaches about 4 to 6 hours depending on usage.
Suddenly this evening while working on some codes I noticed that the LED light at the front right edge side is blinking white and red. When I plugged out the AC power the laptop  went dead.
At restart the BIOS program or whatever it is called is saying that my battery has experienced a permanent failure and needs to be replaced, and seems not to be detecting the battery at all.
But on Windows 8 the battery is being detected. I even managed to run a powercfg /batteryreport on it and it is said to be working fine. The OS is also reporting battery OK, no "the battery needs replacement" or any problems are being reported. Even the DELL diagnostics found no problems on my battery.
My BIOS is now on the latest one and the DELL utility is already refusing to re-flash the bios.

How to calibrate the Microtek scanmaker 3800 scanner. And what is the use of calibrating and when calibrating should be done.

A:Calibrating Scanner

If you want to use the little slide and film adapter that came with the scanner you should use the calibration utility with it. That is all it is for as far as I can tell.

I think the results might just be a little less crappy after you run the utility. I have a 4900, which is true 2400 PPI (2400 X 4800) and the results from the film and slide adapter are still poor. Fortunately I have a dedicated film scanner and donít need it, but I would be a little disappointed if I had bought it to scan film.

In cooperation with various government regulatory agencies, HP has announced an expansion of its June 2016 worldwide voluntary safety recall and replacement program for certain notebook batteries. Additional batteries are affected. The affected batteries have the potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to customers.

Because affected batteries pose a fire and burn hazard, it is essential to recheck your battery even if you did so previously and were told that you were not affected. Note: if you have already received a replacement battery, you are not affected by this expansion.

To recheck your battery, and order a replacement if eligible, go to the HP Battery Recall website at: http://www.HP.com/go/batteryprogram2016

It says I need to use the display menu button. Where is the display menu button? I've been at this for two hours trying to find it on the keyboard, in the manual and via online search. Can someone tell me about notebook batteries. I leave my battery in the notebook all the time I am currently just using it home - so I am using the ac adapter. I am currently using several hours a night working on a project for work. Will this decrease the life of my battery? Should I take out the battery until I need it? And would you recommend a extended warranty. The salesman told me it covers the battery, lcd monitor.

A:notebook battery

normally from my experience, the way the laptop will work is that it always uses the battery and when you plug in the adapter this just charges your battery as you use it!
So the laptop wont work without the battery in!

This in the long run will decrease the battery but no more so than it would in normal running situation.

Depending on what you plan on using the laptop for and ofcourse how much the laptop costs and how much the extra warrenty is!

If you need anymore help give us a shout

Does a notebook battery lose charge even when the machine is turned off?
For example, it was at 100% when I turned it off and removed the AC adapter.
Less than 24 hours later, I turn it on, and the battery indicator says 65%.
I've only had the laptop for a week, and this is the second time the charge has significantly decreased while off. The first time, the battery was completely dead after being fully charged, removed, and not used for 2 days.
Another time, I charged to full and rebooted. The battery showed 95% upon restart. I can't believe it would use that amount to power up.
Is my battery a dud?

I have a Dell D400 notebook and recently bought a new battery. The toolbar icon shows its power reducing fine from 100% to about 40%, but then it suddenly goes to warning at 8% very quickly. Why is this?

One possible clue. I used to have two batteries that both went to about 20 mins life (I know Dell batteries have a reputation). I read that letting them drain all the way, beyond the 'low power' warnings could help so I did that. One of them died completely (dead, kaput, nada) while the other one now holds a reasonable amount of power and the toolbar icon gives an accurate reading.

Do I let it discharge completely before recharging? Or just charge it when I'm not using the thing? And other proceedures that should be followed to make it last as long as possible.

Also, should I leave the battery in the notebook when it's not in use and it's convienent for me to take it out (like when I'm at home sleeping or something?)

While using my notebook on battery it crashes. There is no BSOD and I need to plug in to AC and turn back on.

When I turn it back on the battery level can sometimes be at 41%. It does not give a warning or noise just switches off.

I have tried to follow some of the previous posting instructions but not been able to work out the problem. The battery check says 100% and I have used compressed air to blow out the vents.

The notebook is 18 months old, I have extended warranty but if it is the battery I assume it wont be covered.

Does sound like a bad battery.
Have you made sure the interior battery connector is clean and not blocked?
Do you know someone that you can borrow a battery from for testing?
If not, then you can either take or send it for testing, or replace the battery.

I am getting a new Westinghouse Digital notebook for Christmas. I know because I the techie in the family that had to be sure it worked before sending in the rebate. It comes with a lithium-ion battery. the same technology as the SONY batteries that have exploded in some notebooks. This battery was made by Panasonic not SONY so I feel kinda safe with it.

Does anyone know of battery suppliers that might have a replacement battery using a different technology like NiMH.

Hi, first time using the forum, sorry if my question isn't too clear, but i'll try my best to be.Not very recently, going on about 3 months now, my HP Laptop's (Product code VF836AV) AC Adapter died, and has been recently a total fire hazard, so I tossed it. For a while now, i've been searching for a proper replacement, using sites such as Amazon, and HP in particular, but to absolutely no avail (bought 3, 2 from Amazon, cables compatible with my Laptop in particular, one for $80 from HP which all 3 aren't compatible whatsoever.) I'm honestly not sure, but I refuse to spend any more money on incompatible AC Adapters. I've ruled this out, on either being a DC Jack(internal laptop power jack) issue, or an issue with the battery/adapter itself. In conclusion, I NEED to find an AC Adapter, or Battery if that's the case, for my laptop. Please help! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!Product Name: HP Pavilion Dv8t-1100 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC

i'm thinking of buying a notebook pc though i've been a desktop pc user my whole life, and i have the following concerns:

-are notebooks as fragile as they look? eg: can i rip off the monitor easily?

-with the dvd drive it seems the whole thing, including the lens and the mechanical parts and the tray, needs to be pulled out in order to put a disc in, what happened with the old days where you have you have a dock with a tray loading dvd drive? wouldn't the lens gets more easily damaged with so much exposure to the outside?

-can the notebook still power on with only the power supply plugged in, minus the battery?
thanks for the help.

A:can notebook pc function without a battery?

Yes. I run my notebook without the battery on AC most of the time at home. Keeping the battery away from heat will lenghten battery life in the long run. I used to keep the battery in while on AC and battery life was less than a year. I now leave it out and the battery is still good over a year and a half coming up to two years old. Most laptops today are well built, especially Fujitsu, Acer and Asus. A Fujitsu laptop has been up on Mount Everest. Some laptops have a slot loading CD/DVD tray (trayless). But I never had a problem with trays with the 2 laptops I have owned. If you are concerned about durability outdoors then consider the Panasonic Toughbook series which are used by the military in Iraq.

When I bought this laptop a few months ago, the salesperson advised removing the battery when operating with cord plugged in. She said it would cut down on the heat generated.  I wonder if this is advisable.  If I remove the battery, I'll lose whatever I'm working on.  I have noticed that it gets warm, but not terribly so, and inconveniently, the vents are on the same side as the mouse. Where I live, it's not unusual for the power to flash off for a second or two if a storm is coming.  We have most of our serious electronics plugged into backup batteries, just for that purpose.  Unfortunately, we don't have one for the laptop yet. I wonder if anyone out there has thoughts on this issue?  I would appreciate the feedback.

Hey,

I bought a 12 cell HP battery off of ebay (it is not a battery made by HP). Now this is a great battery which lasts me between 5-7 hours.

Now it does last 5-7hours, but I have issues getting the battery to power the computer on.
I first place my 6 cells battery which was made by HP and power on my computer. When the 6 cell is dead, I try to replace it with the 12 cell but the 12 cell won't power the computer on. When I place the AC adapter into my computer, it turns the laptop on. I can take the AC cable out of my computer and the 12 cells keeps the computer powered for 5-7 hours. I can shut my computer off and the 12 cell powers it back on.

The only time the 12 cell can't power my computer on is when the 6 cell is in there previously. What is wrong, and how do I fix this?

A:Odd notebook battery issues.

Simply don't use the 6 cell. If you really need a back-up, buy another 12 cell.
