I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Performance difference between these two is 10% +/- whereas the price difference is something like 55%. I think that should help you in making the right decision. Also, have a look at this review.

Last March, I purchased an HP stream with 4GB Memory, 32GB eMMC Storage. I was not aware that a common issue in the laptop is that all the restore points use up basically all the storage. I have no room for anything on my laptop, I cannot update it, and trying to use the thing is pretty much useless because it's slower than a snail, and it won't allow me to reset it because I don't have enough storage. I even tried an external hard drive, but I can't install the software, so...here I am.

I was looking to purchase a new laptop, but I don't want to run into the same problem. I was looking at the Lenovo ideapad 330 15.6" Laptop, Windows 10, Intel Core i3-8130U Dual-Core Processor, 4GB RAM, 1TB Hard Drive one. I only need it for basic stuff. Homework, some internet browsing, etc. Would I end up with the same issue? What are your suggestions. I don't need anything fancy and I'm looking to spend only about $300, give or take.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Thank you.

My laptop is on its last legs at this point; I've had it since summer of 2004 and it's practically unusable by now. I have a desktop computer (what I'm using now) but I still need a laptop, as I travel often and need a portable workspace. So I'm looking to buy a new laptop; the only issue is that I refuse to use Vista. I have it on my work computer and it's awful. I got someone to remove it and install XP over it but the computer is still messed up because of it.
Anyway, I'd like to purchase a new laptop with XP as the operating system. I understand that Vista is the standard now, but when I ordered my current HP desktop computer directly from HP in December 2007, about a year ago today, I specified that I'd like a business PC with XP as the operating system and they sent me one. I did the same thing earlier this month; I spent a long time on the phone with the rep at HP searching for the right laptop and again made it very clear that I wanted a business computer with XP as the operating system. What they sent me was a laptop with Vista on it that they had just uninstalled and put XP on. All the installation disks were for Vista and the laptop had a Vista sticker on it. I tested it out and right out of the box it was having performance issues; I called them back and said that I had wanted a laptop with XP as the original operating system and not Vista with XP written over it, like I had gotten a year ago, and they told me that they no long... Hello. Just asking here as I trust the folks here. Not wanting to turn this into a battle, just want an opinion.
Wife is starting a 3 yr Phd in nursing, online. (at home) I'm going to buy her a new laptop and have decided on a i7 processor. Just unsure if it really needs to be dual or quad. Just need the speed for getting between apps. Will not be gaming and so-forth. Next question, which machine then to get? Doesn't need to be touch screen either. Really only interested in better keyboard and battery life. I bought her this little Toshiba Sattelite with i3 processor 3 yrs ago for her BSN and is still alive. Just fast and reliable. Thank you DM

A:laptop purchase with i7

Unlikely you would need the power of an i7. An upper level i5 is very strong.

If the i7 is in your budget range, go ahead on.

Get a quad core. I'm not sure off hand if there are dual-core i5s anyway.

If at all possible, get one with an SSD (solid state drive). She'll appreciate it every operating moment, whereas she might never appreciate an i7.

Most laptops will have only one hard drive, so presumably you'd get one with maybe a 250 or 500 GB SSD. If you buy one that has two hard drives, you'd likely have Windows on the SSD and use the standard hard drive for storage.

I'd say the better way to go would be to get a machine with one hard drive--an SSD, and then use an external hard drive for backup and/or more storage if needed.

You can always get an add-on keyboard to bypass the laptop's keyboard.

Battery life: read reviews for info on that. The harder you work the machine, the lower the battery life, but there have been a lot of improvements in that area in the last few years.

As for specific recommendations, I can't make any as I don't use laptops. The usual suspects would be Dell, HP, Lenovo, and maybe Toshiba. Maybe Asus? I'd avoid Acer due to horror stories about customer service. I wouldn't expect stellar customer service for any of them--just hope you don't need to use it.

Find a few prospective machines in your price range and post links to them so we can have a look.

Greetings. I am in the neighborhood for a Laptop. Our local Best Buy store has a Toshiba Laptop A665-S6050. among other things it comes with a 12 cell battery, 500 GB HDD, Core i-3 proc, 4 GB DDR3 RAM.

From what I have been told to look for, this has it all. The tech guys at work favor Dell or Toshiba. Consumer Reports shows favorable ratings for Dell, HP and Toshiba.

I am at the point of having over analyzed laptops and am temporarily burned out from looking.

My biggest concern is Customer Service/Tech Support. Toshiba has been beaten up since moving CS to Manila.
(My cynical side says all CS departments are likely equal depending on day and rep you talk to...)

A:Which laptop to purchase

I've you looked at QVC and HSN for laptop deals. They offer more CS/TS than you get from retail. QVC is more upscale they feature HP /DELL/ ACER as HSN ACER/Gateway. HSN is cheaper, price are 599 to 799 and QVC prices are 699 to 1099. Great part about them you don't have to pay full price if you got on the 4-6 months no interest flex pay deal and most have shipping for free and no tax depends on your state and if you order online. Delivery is quick!

HP are no. 1 in laptops sells followed by ACER (acer makes Gateway and emachine), then DELL and the rest.

What you're looking for is:

Intel i-core 3 or 5
500GB or better HDD
12-13 cell battery
4GB min 6GB for RAM
10/100/1000mb/s for wired NIC
802.11(a,b,g,n) for wireless NIC (note 802.11a is rare in a laptop and dual band also)
web cam
HDMI port
4 USB ports
15.6 min or 17.3 (1080p full HD)
LED/LCD Ultra-Brite Screen than the Matt type. On Blue-Ray laptop the screen is sharper
DVDRW or Blue-Ray

Get extra battery and power supply they do come in handly.
Also retail price deals not always as good as online or HSN or QVC deals.

If you going to buy it from BB, get HP or ACER. DELLs are good for business model Latitude.

Hi everyone,

My friend is asking me to get him a laptop at a certain price point.

I've found two that adhere to his needs which are the following:

Portability: 12' - 14'
Performance factors
*Browsing - Flash videos
*Office - Excel, Powerpoint
*Light Gaming - Napoleon: Total War | HOME
**Branding - He specifically mentioned Dell. But I'm reluctant to agree or disagree at this point, having no experience in laptops.

-Dell - Inspiron M102z Laptop Details | Dell

However, the specific model I'm getting has the E450 APU- Dell Inspiron M102z gets AMD Fusion E-450, C-60 upgrade options | Netbooknews - Netbooks, Netbook Reviews, Smartbooks and more

-Lenovo - Lenovo - IdeaPad S205 Netbook

Judging from the light gaming, it's not so light for these two. Any input on this guys?

A:Laptop Purchase Query

IMO, you should go for Dell Inspiron M102z.
The one thing that will make a big difference is the 7200 RPM Hard Disk, this will give a pleasing performance for a non/light gamer.
Moreover, I have experienced that Dell services are in general swift and hassle free.
Lenovo is the visual candy.

Am I in the right topic?? I didn't see another one re laptops so here I go---

I would like to get a laptop with a wireless internet connection. I would use it mostly for word processing and the internet. I was told that the best $$ savings would be to get one without an os and then get someone to install the os. That sounds like a lot of motion just to save money. Currently owns a stationary computer since a few years back but since I'm traveling abroad for a year (and possibly more times following that) I've decided to buy a laptop.
The purpose is webbing/document editing/computer programming and gaming (which I think will be most demanding). I've asked my local computer store for a suggestion (and got one) but would like to get some input from someone else before buying:
Laptop specifications:
Asus R555JK
CPU i7-4710
Memory 8GB
Disk 750GB+24GB SSD (I'll probably ask them to at least make it 1TB)
15Wide Full-HD
Graphic GTX850
Windows 8.1

(Price ~8,000SEK ~= 1,000USD, could go up to about 10,000 SEK, but don't mind saving a little but this will do)
The things I would like input on would be:
-Am I making a big mistake somewhere?
-How would this computer play some game (some example of popular games like Star Craft/Dota/Skyrim/Civilization/Fallout would be fine).
-How would it compare to my current computer (that despite some age I'm still very satisfied with):
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Memory 8192MB RAM
Disk 150GB SSD + 500GB
Display 1680 x 1050
Graphic NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570
Windows 7
Thanks in Advance!

A:Input in laptop purchase

Do you know if the GTX 850M in question is the DDR3 or GDDR5 version? The GDDR5 version will be significantly faster because it has its own much faster memory. The DDR3 version would use your system memory (RAM), which is much slower.

While the 850M is by no means a bad card (assuming the GDDR5 version), it won't play all games on highest settings. It will however, handle the majority of them very well. It will handle the games you mentioned, but it might struggle with Fallout 4 on high settings. If you're fine with that, then it's a good GPU.

The Core i7-4710HQ is a decent processor and won't have an issue with the majority of what you throw at it. 8 GB RAM is what I'd consider a minimum in computers these days, and the Intel HD Graphics inside the Core i7 will utilize up to 1.7 GB of it, leaving you with 6 GB for Windows and your programs.

Against your desktop, assuming the i7-2600K isn't overclocked, the i7-4710HQ's performance is around 10% inferior. The GTX 570 is slightly better.

I hope this has helped you.

Well, hello guys.
I am planning to buy a new laptop. I will buy it in Miami.
I would like a laptop with non glossy screen 15"-16" Primary task I will be performing is searching the web. No games.
I would like Core i3 processor. SSD would be nice but then again it will be too expensive. If not SSD I would want HDD 7200 rpm.
RAM 2GB would be OK
I don't mind Windows 7 home premium. I will be most of the time at home with my laptop so 4 hours of battery life will do.
Optical drive, no need of blu-ray drive. Webcam not necessary.
I have been searching for a couple of weeks now and Dell is the only brand I could find with non glossy screen.
At Tiger Direct they don't sell Dell laptop. I wonder if Best Buy does.
But if one of you guys knows a retail store in Miami please let me know. I will be staying closed to Miam Intl. Airport.
If one of you guys could recommend a good and reliable brand of laptop I would appreciate it.
Will I need to buy an external HDD for my backups or is there a possibility of two internal HDD's???
I also consider a refurbished laptop. Is it a good or a bad idea??

In the past I have not been impressed with HP or their products. If there is a difficult way to do something then HP seem to do it that way... they don't seem to have heard of the KISS principle.

However..... I visited my local PC retailer today and played around for an hour with an HP Laptop and came away very impressed. This is not a typical "laptop" as such, it is a replacement Desktop - which is what I want. Info on the product can be found at the end of this Post.

REQUEST : If you have "hands-on" experience of this product or a very similar HP product, I would be most grateful if you would share your views on both the product and the company - good, bad or indifferent.

Quick review of my first impression of this product :

Great keyboard especially for touch-typing, keys have just the right travel and are positioned in exactly the right place. I was typing at full speed with few errors within less than a minute - that is remarkable on a new keyboard.
Super 17.3" screen, backlit LED with very effective anti-glare. Both graphics and text render supurbly.
An excellent specification for under Ł1,000.

Hello everyone, thanks for being here,

I am in the process of buying a laptop from my daughter and am in a common dilemma. My needs are greater than my budget. She is into photography and music and wants to be able to make videos of herself and create and edit video slideshows put to her music etc. She also wants to be able to play Life is Strange which has minimum requirements of the following most of which are easy:

Operating system: Windows Vista.
Processor: Intel Dual Core 2.0 Ghz or similar.
Graphics card: NVIDIA or AMD z 512MB VRAM (no official Intel HD support)
Space needed on the hard driver HDD: 3 GB.
Graphic memory: 512 MB.
DirectX: DirectX 9.0
My concern is Video Card, but I may be worried for nothing. Our budget is $1000 Canadian dollars all included so about $850 CDN before tax.

Do I need dedicated graphics memory for these needs? If we cant do dedicated graphics at our proce point what else would give her the best experience? Are there better graphics chips than others? What is the next highest priority for this kind of work after video card, processor speed?

Please help! I need to get her a laptop today or tomorrow.

thanks for your help,

The minimum specs of that program are quite low so it should run decently on any decent laptop on the market.

A:Need an Opinion on a Laptop I should purchase

Hi all,

I recently have gotten a job lugging computers around (ironically enough) and will soon have a few thousand dollars that I wish to use to buy a laptop computer. What should I look for in a laptop? What brands would you guys suggest, and which have given you trouble? Also, where would you buy from? For the budget I'm in, a laptop is a huge amount of money, and I'd rather not have it die in six months.

My plan was to get a laptop that I like, that has a warranty, and while still under warranty, I'd run a burn-in test program for a few days to make sure the model I picked doesn't have heat issues. However, I think this would strain the computer to the point that it would reduce the life of the PC. Am I right, or is my original plan OK?

Also, I'm into FIRST Robotics, and need a serial port from which to reprogram the robot controller. Is it possible to get a USB->Serial port adapter, or do I need to find a computer with a built-in serial port?

I know this is a long post, but I don't really know what I'm doing, and I'd like to, so please help!

A few questions: What do you want to do with your computer? Which features of a PC are most important to you? (e.g., surfing the web, schoolwork, gaming, competitive gaming, programming, etc - big screen, fast keyboard, large capacity hard drive, processing power, etc) What's your budget?

Hello,  I am a law student in need of a new laptop. I know what I want in my computer, but I do not know exactly where/how to find it. To start, I should note that I use the heck outta my technology. I study hours each day (and that is comprised of videos, PDFS, and a crap ton of CTL+F on 100+ page word docs and pdfs), browse the web for research with several tabs at once, stream video, music, sometimes tv or netflix, and do a ton of video/music/photo editing for my basketball team. I am currently running on a Dell inspiron 15r (dinosaur) 1TB HD, Intel i7-3612QM CPU @ 2.1GHz, 8gb Ram, Win. 8 64-bit, and a whole lotta stale Dell Hardware. I want to upgrade to something more modern, sleek, and powerful. My dell has surpassed my expectations, and then some, given that it is a 6 year old grandpa that is still running pretty well for its age. However, it is definitely showing that age, and I think its time for an upgrade. With that being said, I know i want a ThinkPad. I have used them at work and love their performance. I also want a touch screen, and definitely want the garaged stylus (given that I am a Galaxy Note User). However, I also don't want to lose any of the processing power that my current model has. And that is how I arrived at Lenovo, but now I am stuck. I have browsed through seemingly dozens of ThinkPad and Yoga Models, without being able to differentiate between them all. Can someone please help me differentiate between the ThinkPad/T... Hi, I need to purchase a laptop for work I'll be starting, remote customer service, in and outbound calls. I have a HP laptop very old but is still works great. I have been hired to multiple companies, each company required a PING test which I failed miserably.

I'm on a very tight budget but desperately need to purchase a new laptop. I need something that's fairly quick with a webcam and Windows 7 or newer. The only requirement is that it can't be any Apple product. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ping test would be your internet connection , are you expecting a new laptop to fix the ping test issue ?

I think Dell would be best. You'll get arguments from people but here's why I say they are the best--I have four of them and parts for repair are very easy to get--they are everywhere on E-bay and very cheap--they are easy to service. For the price its hard to beat. I've dropped mine on numerous occasions, splilled stuff on it--only thing I've ever had to do was replace the keyboard, the hard drive and the power jack, but the abuse I give it, it would be a miracle if none of those things needed to be replaced but they were cheap fixes except for the power jack, but if you don't use it a lot you'll likely never have an issue with the power jack.

I am in need of a new laptop which is not my primary computer. I need to keep cost down. I use laptop mostly for banking and surfing. I have a Dell Inspiron which is a royal pain from the day I purchased. Now it is a slug. Needless to say, Dell is not my American Idol. But, Costco has a deal for a Studio 15, with a V505 printer, for $600 plus shipping. I've looked at some Acer products with a relatively low price. Any suggestions?

A:New laptop purchase, mostly for banking and surfing

I'm sorry to hear about your current laptop but I think the Dell Studio 15 is worth checking out. It has a 15.6" high-definition LED widescreen display and features optional Intel® Core? i7 mobile processors. With the printer included, it sounds like you are getting a pretty good deal! The Acer Aspire AS7740-5691 is a great laptop for productivity and multi-media. It has a a cinematic 17.3" HD+ LED-backlit display. The Acer Aspire AS5740-6491 is another option that has a smaller screen and excellent connectivity.

I hope this was helpful. Let me know if you have any questions!

Need to find the best deal for a laptop. I have a 700 dollar gift card to purchase something on hp.com.  I want a laptop with a quad core processor and a 2gb discrete graphics card. Can anybody do it?

A:I have a $700 gift card to purchase a laptop

Not that I can find. It would have to be AMD to get the Quad Core and at $700 you are only going to get the APU graphics. You need to come up with another $3-400 or lower your sights a bit.

I want to know if I can get a replaement laptop comparable to the one I have without the memory, hard drive,  DVD drive and, possibly, the wireless card. My current machine case is busted in the back from the prying action of the hinging. I don'e want to have to reload all of my software which I use regulary for work. Do I have any options for this? Thank you, William

A:Purchase laptop w/o drives, memories

@CliffRat I'm not aware of anywhere that would sell you a new laptop without memory or a drive, and I don't believe that HP will do that, either. You might be able to get a used laptop off eBay -- but you have no way of knowing if those used PCs are any good, or not. You can certainly carry over the memory sticks -- if you purchase the same make and model laptop as you have currently. But, you can NOT carry over the hard drive as the OEM licensed product installed on it is tied to the original PC, and you can not legally move it to a different PC.

I am trying to find a good gaming/multimedia laptop for my brother for Christmas. The company widowpc has good ratings, but they are expensive. The one I'm looking at is the Sting 517M Gaming Laptop, configured like this:

Pentium M 2.0GHZ
2GB (2x1024mb) Apacer DDR2
100GB 7200rpm HD by Hitachi
Nvidia 7800 GTX go
PCMCIA Wireless 802.11 b/g 108Mbps
USB optical minimouse
Logitech Mx100 gaming mouse
everything else stanard

On their website they say they have a price match guarantee, but it has to be for the exact same items. I'm having trouble finding some of the parts on the internet, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to look. I found everything cheaper on pricewatch except that I don't know where to find the 2 GB of Apacer DDR2 RAM or the Nvidia 7800 GTX go. Any ideas?

Hello hope you are all well. I am now writing on my ( one week old ) smartphone.
The Dell is broken and I am now looking to buy a laptop for around 300 euro so it has to be a refurbished one. I know not to buy on eBay and need a bit of help in the choice of model.
You can see in my system specs what I had before. I think Dell and Toshiba are safe.
I am not a gamer but will use the laptop a lot for my pictures and for watching news, y tube and travel programs nature doc's and so on as I don't like and have a TV.
Any suggestions will be very appreciated and of coarse if I buy something that is not good it will be totally my responsibility.
Many thanks for any help

I currently have a DELL Vostro 1310, which is now around 10yrs old. Whilst it is working well still and has been very reliable I do need to upgrade.

My question is based on my lack of knowledge. If I give some criteria could someone advise me on perhaps a few best options?
1) Style & looks don't matter / my 1310 is an ideal size - so something similar. I'd rather have capability than looks.
2) I don't play games
3) I am looking for it to open programs and pages fast
4) I need to run with many pages / windows open at the same time, without slowing down its operating response
5) I store most of my large files / photos on an external hard drive.
6) The programs I run most are Excel, Word, Internet, Outlook, Music, Steaming or Downloading Video.
7) Speed - I need it to operate and open and close programs quickly, or multiple programs
8) Internet connection would be via standard wifi.
9) I don't want touch screen!
Basically I don;t fully understand about memory and processors etc, as to which offers which benefit. So based on what  my needs are, can anyone suggest the best option, as the more I look at the extensive options on DELL website, the more I get confused!

Thanks in advance

A:Dell Laptop Purchase Advice

Basically, any current system with an i3 or higher CPU and a screen with a maximum of FHD (1920X1080) will work.  If you're using this for business, a Latitude is a better choice than an Inspiron or XPS (or Vostro if you're in a part of the world where those are still sold).
Though you might find 4K screen resolution appealing, seriously consider whether you're willing to live with the trade-off that such a screen will bring (smaller pixel size, much lower battery runtime, and much reduced video performance if you're going for a small/lightweight system).

I have never owned a laptop but I need to get one this week.

I am looking at a Compaq Presario with a Turion ml 32 processor

Do I understand correctly that if I intend to upgrade to the Microsoft Vista operating system later on down the road that I will need to have a 64 bit processor like the turion?

A:laptop purchase advice sought

I can't remember if Vista is going to be 64bit exclusively, but if it is that assumption would be correct.

What is your price range for a Laptop, you might look at Acer for a good performer at a decent price.

Another question is what do you need the laptop to do?
