Computer wont restart/windows wont load

Q: Computer wont restart/windows wont load

When I start up my pc, I get a screen that says, "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully, a recent hardware or software change may have caused this, ….etc."
Then I am offered with a bunch of options to either:

1) Start in Safe Mode
2) Safe Mode with Networking
3) Safe Mode with Command Prompt
4) Start Windows Normally
5) Last Known Good Configuration

None of them work, the safe mode ones, show a bunch of lines of code as per normal when starting up safe mode, then it freezes and stops and eventually goes back to the screen mentioned above. Same for 4 and 5, windows blue loading bar screen comes up, then the screen turns black and nothing. After a few mins my computer restarts again and goes back to the screen mentioned above.

Prior to my computer not being able to restart/load windows. I had some pop up vundu trojans i was trying to remove. Did some research after about 5 hours finally removed it. A couple days after i started receiving "generic host process error" Something to do with explorer.exe program. So i ctrl + alt + del and explorer.exe was taking up 100 cpu usage. At this point i tried to minimize task manager and my computer froze up. I waited about an hour came back and still nothing so i manually turned off my computer and turned back on. And now it will not restart. I have no idea where my windows xp disks are or even if i have them. I found what appears to be the solution to my explorer.exe problem here > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314867 . However as i said i cannot boot up my computer at all.

I was rummaging through a box of disks and found what appeared to be back up disks, i threw one in and up came MSDOS 2.25 is there a way to boot up windows in safe mode from there?
Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

By the way i am using windows XP service pack 2 i believe, cant recall exactly

Preferred Solution: Computer wont restart/windows wont load

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello there,

It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.

Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:

1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.

4. Accept the Windows license agreement.

5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.

6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.

7.  Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk... Read more

Backstory (skip if you need)
I'm fixing someones laptop, It was slow and taking 30 minutes to startup, i did the usually virus scan and restarted, then it was stuck in an auto repair loop. I used a windows 8 Install CD from microscoft. None of the options in it would work, install (key doesnt match) reset (missing partition), image recovery (cant find an image), restore (no restore point), etc.

Used command prompt, did stuff like bootrec, bcdedit, diskpart, and chkdsk. After it ran chkdsk it finally loaded windows. I reset/reinstalled the OS completely. Fixed, restarted, running smooth. Owner said it was working great for a day, then after turning it back on it was in an auto repair loop.

Now
It's stuck in a preair loop, I can't even boot from the 8 CD! Have it configured in the bios, it shows the the blue windows logo then the screen goes black for 3 minutes and a blue screen flashes for 1 second saying  "Your PC ran into a problem and need to restart. Collecting some info (0% complete) search online for error: 0x000021a"

The weird thing is, Windows 7 disks boot fine, but it's "not compatible". And if I physically remove the HDD, it will boot into the windows 8 CD. So I put the HDD back in (while still at the command prompt) and it wont take my commands in related to the C: . I get a "System cannot find the drive specified"

I also tried hooking upp the HDD to my PC SATA, it shows in explorer, but just right clicking it crashes explorer.exe. D... Read more

A:Windows wont load, Boot CD wont load, Automatic Repair Loop

UPDATE:

I got a windows 8.1 disk made and it allowed me yo boot from the CD, but it's SLOOOOW, it takes minutes to load reset or w.e (none of them still work), or open the command prompt.

I ran chkdsk /f /r /x but it didnt help. chkdsk /r ends with:
"A disk read error occurredcc0000185
Insufficient disk space to fix the Usn Journal $J data stream."

Before when I ran it, I'm pretty sure it let me restart and booted into windows, not now.

Next I tried bootrec.
/fixmbr - succesful
/fixboot - succesfull
/rebuildBCD - Total identified Windows installations: 0
/scanOS - Total identified Windows installations: 0

Next bcdedit
Nothing worked "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found."

Next sfc /scannow
"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."
Then sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=d:\Windows
"Windows resources protection didnt find integrity violations"

BCDBoot c:\WindowsFailure when attempting to copy boot files

Next diskpart - but I forgot what I did before that may have worked. All i can remember is I had to select a disk or volume, and do something with it.

Yesturday my vista was working great, and on the screen as i went to shut it down said "updating files do not shut down computer 3/3 100%" but it stayed like that for 4 hours, so i turn it off manualy once i turned it back on the next day it asked me for my password i put it in and as it was loading it was vey slow and would take 5-6 minutes for programs to load up.

Also when i go to click on like my internet it dont work, not even my games work, they try to load then freeze. So i did a scan on it and its still having this problem. After i got frustrated i went to shut it down again and it says "logging off" but stays like that for hours, so i have to manualy turn it off. Now with internet issue, it works in safe mode with connection, but not in my normal screen. WHY IS THIS DOING THIS?

Nothing will load on my Compaq Presario 700 notebook. It wont even turn on in safe mode.
When I go to turn it on it sounds like the hard drive attempts to spin. I don't hear the fans, but all the lights come on. The battery is fairly new and everything is plugged in properly.
All this began when I was running Macromedia Dreamweaver MX and it locked up forcing me to shut down.
Any ideas?

Might be a failing Hard drive. Get to your bios and see if there is any diagnostics there to do a hard drive test. On some motherboards its delete on others its F2. If there is no diagnostics on the bios i would make a USB bootable diagnostics and do that.
I just had the same problems and found out the hard way that it was a hard drive.

I finally got a new computer after having my old one for 6 years. It has Windows Xp on it. When I finally get everything I need installed on it, I install Norton Antivirus on it. After doing the update, it was required to restart. After I restarted, my icons and toolbar appeared on my screen as normal. Then after a minute maybe, it disappeared. The only thing that would show up is my wallpaper. I tried right clicking, pressing the windows button on my keybard, and even restarting again a few times. It all came back to the same outcome. I tried finding posts on it but I didnt see one. I'm sorry if I did miss one. Could anyone give me some ideas as of what to do? it would really help.

Assuming it's a factory-brand one and not a custom/home-made one, what's the brand name and model name and model number of that computer?

Do you have the Windows XP disc for it, and does it contain any of the 3 service packs?

Did it come with Windows XP Home Edition or Professional or Media Center Edition?

Is the 25-character product key on its COA sticker readable?
(Do not submit that number here)

We're not there, so you need to advise us exactly what happens when you try to start that computer and load Windows XP.

Paul, welcome to TSF.

Can you confirm that it's the Dell load bar that gets stuck, and not the XP loading bar??
If it's the first Dell screen, then check the Diagnostic Lights on the back of the tower. There will be 4 circlular lights numbered 1 to 4, or lablled A to D. Check what sequence is (they should be all green for a normal working towers) and compare what they mean in this Troubleshooting guide:

Hi. I have a Abit-BE6 mobo and my computer crashed. I got a new hard drive and it isn't recognizing my new HDD. I got a Maxtor 200GB OEM. I have it as the slave and my floppy as master. I think that is ok but for some reason it isn't recognizing it. I Then attempted to put it as master and put it to the mobo without the floopy as slave. It recognized it but when it went to load windows it gave an error message that said something like that it couldn't read it or failure. It said i had no hard drive when i put it as slave, it wouldn't recognize it any where. I need the hard drive to load windows and get my computer running. It is also PATA/IDE. I also have no software so i don't know what to do. Please help, i want my computer running again!

I dont know alot about computers so please bare with me. I deleted alot of old programs (such as games etc) which I do not use anymore, *through the control panel add/remove programs*, then did a virus scan, and deleted what was found, and decided to go to www.microsoft.com and get the sp3.. after I installed, when I restarted my computer later, it gave me a black screen saying that it was shut down unexpectedly, and offers safe modes, last good config, and start normally, I have tried all three options, with safe mode, it freezes the computer, with the other two, it boots to the windows logo screen, then it will restart the entire system. Is there any way to fix this? I did not get windows disks or anything like that when I bought the computer, I did create recovery disks, but have since lost one of them, so they aren't much help.

Thanks

It's going to be difficlt without the XP CD, as that has the Recovery Console that we need in order to get your computer past the logo screen and into the OS.

Have a read here. If you feel confident that you can get the ISO burnt to disk, come back and we'll continue.

HJT is a malware tool...do you think your system is infected with malware?

If not, then I suggest that you edit your post and remove that HJT log data. If you allow it to remain, this thread will be moved to one of our malware forums, where they deal with attempting to solve malware puzzles.

Hi. I have been having an issue on another computer that has been driving me crazy. It wont shutdown or restart!!! Can run updates, add/remove programs, not even change some startup settings because it just wont go through the full paces.

So far i have tried going into run, services.msc, and looked into the NVIDIA driver helper that i read somewhere else but it keeps coming up with a plug and play fault and is already disables regardles.

Also looked into power settings.

I changed the startup so it would run as little programs as possible and now i cant get on the internet. Somehow that restart caught after i changed the startup settings and now it wont change back. Says it needs a full restart first.

Please help!

It completely freezes up. Worse yet, other users on this computer are having no problem using internet explorer when they are logged on to their side of XP. Why is it that when im logged on to my user name on XP that internet explorer wont work? I need help quick as all my favourites are saved in IE and I need to access some pages very soon. Im using firefox right now, and absolutely hate it. Please help me.

i have windows 2000 and ever since i got a worm virus and got rid of it my computer will not shut down, restart, or go into stand by it just stays at the screen with the box that says windows is shutting down or restarting or going into standby is there any way i can actually make it turn off or restart because i have to turn it off from the power switch now.

A:my computer wont shut down, restart or go into stand by

First off run your antivirus again, then run a spyware remover such as Spybot: S&D or Adaware. Then scan your disk for errors. Sometimes viruses can be removed but leave behind misc. files that can mess with Windows.

I was browsing my car forums when gAyOL disconnected. Then I tried to connect again (56k) and it took forever to start and then stopped responding. I then shut my computer off and tried to restart and now it comes up"sorry for the inconvenience but windows was not started properly, it may be because of new soft/hard ware. Then it gives you the options to start windows normally, safe mode or last way it worked. No matter what I try it wont start up, just continually starts over again saying something doesnt work. Can anyone help me? I need to be making a video right now for my senior project and I cant start my computer right now. What can i do to fix it?

P.S im on my laptop right now.

I dont know if this is posted in the right area but I'm so desperate to get my laptop working its unreal.
First it started off with my laptop crashing, I had totally forgot it needed to do a windows update and turned off my laptop in hopes that it would work properly.
After that my laptop has not been working. The machine turns on and gives me two options. Start windows normally or do a repair. Upon starting windows normally, it loads so far before sending me back to the two options of start windows normally or repair. On the second time I clicked repair. My laptop then goes so far before presenting me with a blue screen that is usually the screen where my accounts are. The cursor still moves but it loads no further even after leaving it an hour. I decided to make a repair disk, hoping that the problem was because of windows. the disk loads, gives me a choice on the keyboard language then does nothing. I honestly have no idea what to do, I want to keep all the files safe on my computer as I havent backed them up and I have worked so hard on the projects. someone please help

Do a hardware/software reset with your BIOS:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

After doing those steps, clear your CMOS by entering the BIOS (see your system manual for steps to enter the BIOS), going to the EXIT screen, and loading setup/optimized defaults.

Lets start from the beginning..this is the kids pc and it wouldn'r boot W2K stating something was missing (I can't remember what this was as I started trying to get this machine going over a month ago)...long story..erased the HD and was going to reload W2K. Would boot up far enough to say it couldnt read drive A. Went into BIOS and changed it to boot to CD only....starts to load and shuts down - then it won't power off.----> Sometimes it will power off to reboot and sometimes not. Once I actually got it to start booting windows to have it stop 1/3 of the way in. So I thought HD...they had a crappy 6.8 gb in there anyway. Replaced HD today added memory and I am still having the same problems. I am thinking power supply, motherboard or processor. Where do I start without feeding excessive money into this project and pulling all my hair out?

my sisters computer is infested with viruses so i downloaded malwarebytes and mse and updated them, i changed her computer setting to safe mode and rebooted and was planning on trying to rid some of the viruses. now the computer lists all the drivers it's loading and freezes after it gets to drivers\CLASSPNP.sys
it sat there for about 10 minutes so i restarted it and it gave me the option to start windows normally, or in safe mode. if i choose the latter, i get the same problem as above. if i choose to start it normally, it lists all the drivers like before, gets to classpnp.sys, then goes to a black screen saying the computer is loading in safe mode with minmal services. then it goes to a black screen and just sits there. All i did really was change from normal startup to safe mode now i cant load windows or something. Anyone have an idea?

Help appreciated

Hi there, am staying @ my parent's and looking after their house whilst theyre abroad. Yesterday I decided to have a little play on my dads computer which runs on windows xp, I installed the sims duluxe edition and the sims living it up and played on them for about 10mins. Everything was fine, shut down the computer etc. Today I went to turn it on and windows will not even load. The start-up screens come up and it says there was a power-failure could not start properly perhaps due to software/hardware changes. However it wont even start in safe mode, none of the options work the computer just reboots itself and goes back to the same screen. I think there was a power cut last night but am pretty sure its something to do with the game I installed. Please help, my dads going to kill me is I cant sort it out!

Have you tried booting into Last Known Good Configuration ?

-1. Turn on your computer

-2. Keep pressing the F8 key while it boots up to get the Boot Menu (Safe Mode, Last known good configuration, etc will be listed in it)

-3. Use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.

See if that helps resolve your problem...

Hey i finally got annoyed last night and disk defragged my machine. All went well, switched it off after it was done.

However now it wont load up. It posts etc, gets to the windows splash screen then brings up the bit that says, Windows didnt shut down correctly, boot in safe mode, last know good settings or just boot up windows.

I have tried each option several times, but the damn thing wont booot up.

Any suggestions will be gratefull. If not then ima just go f-disk it and reinstall everything i guess.

Hi I seem to be in desperate need of help once again. My computer has started to randomly power down completely with no warning. After it crashes/powers down it wont turn back on again unless I turn off/unplug the power supply and let it sit for a few hours. This occasionally happens when I turn it off too. I've tried checking the connections and they "seem" fine, replaced the thermaltake. I even did a complete clean installation of window 8.1 and it still shuts down at random. I wasn't sure where to post this since I'm not sure what's causing the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My system information
Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor
ASRock B85M Pro4 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (x2 so 16Gb in total)
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Antec TruePower Classic 650W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)
Corsair Vengeance K70 Wired Gaming Keyboard

Thanks in advance for any help.
