BSOD Windows 10 (host crashed while running VMWare Workstation Unity)

Q: BSOD Windows 10 (host crashed while running VMWare Workstation Unity)

Hi All,

On a rock solid machine (to date) I got a BSOD. During this time I was using Unity (VMWare Pro), and the host crashed (not the client VM).

I did try the tool at http://www.osronline.com/, which seems to claim that the culprit was steam.exe, but I'm not sure that makes sense.

Any help would be appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there
For XP users who want to keep using their XP system why not run VMWARE VMPLAYER -- FREE in UNITY MODE.

You don't need even to run Windows as your Host --I've posted in the FORUM how to create a Portable system that runs Windows Virtual machines and totally boots from an external HDD / USB stick (even if there's no HDD in the main computer !!).

Using Unity mode simply gives you access to all your Windows XP programs (and runs them) directly from the Host
without you needing to enter the VM at all -- Power up your VM and simply click the Unity mode on the vm menu.

If you use Linux as a host it saves you having to purchase a new version of windows (Linux is FREE). Simply convert your XP system to a VM and then you can keep running XP for as long as you like without worrying about having to upgrade Windows.

Hi there

just thought I'd do a Bonkers experiment - works and isn't too slow (but use SSD !!!).

Host W10 X-64 PRO with HYPER-V

VM1 (ist level VM - 2nd level machine) Linux CENTOS 7 with latest kernel (4.7)

VM2 --installed VMware workstation on the Linux machine (VM1) --created XP VM --works fine !!!!

I know it's Bonkers but I was curious to see if the HYPERVISOR (HYPER-V) on the Host would propagate its properties to a second level machine (VM1) preventing VMWARE workstation from running.

Seems that the XP VM which is using VM1 as its Host doesn't know anything about HYPER-V nor does VM1.

It's entertaining to test various nested scenarios

I've had Windows XP Mode running on Microsoft Virtual PC installed on Windows 7 Ultimate vm running on a nested Windows 10 Pro Hyper-V vm running on Windows 10 Enterprise host.

My laptop is a HP 8470p Elitebook, Windows 7 32bit, 4GB ram, Windows Enterprise.

I recently installed VMWare workstation and all was well for a day or 2. Unfortunately I was had to force powering off (holding down power button) because my laptop was not responding whatsoever and ever since then I am facing BSOD no matter what I try.

There seems to be 3 different messages i get during the BSOD:

3. The driver is mismanaging system PTEs

I have tried the following:

- Before installing VMWare Workstation i enabled virtualization in BIOS. I have disabled this.
- I've tried uninstalling VMWare workstation, i recieve an error ("MSI '' error") and am unable to uninstall.
- Removing RAM modules independently.
- Selective Startup

Out of the above, the only one that made a difference was selective startup. I disabled all startup items and restarted. It loaded the Windows boot animation and then went to a black screen with just the mouse cursor.

Since then it will no longer let me boot into safe mode, it just goes straight into a BSOD with the "mismanaging system PTEs" error.

Could someone please help, this is driving me nuts!

I should add that I'm not 100% sure it it VMWare Workstation that caused this, but that was the last thing i did before the BSODs.

Thanks in advance.

Hi erwor.

Unfortunately the crash dumps are not very much informative.

What you should do is to update VMWare to the latest version and to install the VMWare tools again.

Let us know the result.

Hi All,

I've been getting blue screen whenever I start any VM on my VMware workstation. This had happened in the past, but not so frequent, perhaps once a month. But since two days ago, this had happened whenever I click on starting my virtual machine. It blue screens within 2seconds.

I recently updated some drivers on my laptop. It is a Lenovo T430. I suspect it is my drivers causing the problem, but I can't pinpoint anything.

Here's the stuff I tried doing but to no avail:
1. Reinstalled VMware workstation.
2. Reset Bios settings.
3. Disabled Anti Virus
4. Run Vmware workstation as administrator.
5. Rollback both my Graphics drivers.

Running Unity mode fails in W8.1 update 1 -- The store app just runs in Full screen and you can't close it - it just re-starts again.

If you disable the Storte app then another Metro app starts in full screen and does the same thing.

W7 and XP Virtual machiunes work just fine in Unity mode.

(BTW no problems if you are not using Unity mode). This problem happens whether the Host is a PC or a Mac with fusion. It happens with vmware - haven't tried VBOX).

Top screen W8.1 Metro app in Full screen not allowing any other app to run even if you select from menu.

Bottom screen Windows XP Sp3 - menu visible on Host desktoip - applications can run on Host desktop - That's the way it is supposed to work.

If you are using VMWare Workstation with Windows 8.1 you will have to reinstall it. I attempted a repair first but that didn't work so I removed and reinstalled, and now all is working just fine. VMWare player worked without having to do a reinstall. . . good luck.

A:Windows 8.1 and VMWare Workstation

I did an uninstall/reinstall of VMWare Player 5.0.2 after upgrading Windows 8 to 8.1.
VMWare and the VMs ran OK but the Windows upgrade messed up the virtual network adapters.

The upgrade to Windows 8.1 also reset many of the preferences in my local user account, including such things as File Explorer settings, RDC default folder, Send To items, etc.
Overall relatively painless, but probably a bit confusing and frustrating for anyone non-technical, as once again the upgrade attempts to force you into creating a new online user account.

I run almost everything in VMs though, the only software installed on the Windows 8.x host is MS Office HS 2007, VMWare, and WinZip. So I wasn't expecting too much difficulty with the upgrade.

So far I do like the upgrade changes though...

Hi all

To install W8 developer edition (current version) as a VM with vmware workstation you have to download / upgrade to version 8. Version 7.1X and earlier won't work. Vmware player (current version) gives same problem as vmware workstation 7.1x.

When you install choose W7 as the OS (there isn't a W8 option yet not surprisingly) and select I will install the OS later.

Then select the DVD device in the vm serttings as a virtual ISO (you don't need to burn a physical DVD) and boot from the device.

Then it will install more or less as W7.

Ignore any prompt for a product key if it appears. I wasn't asked for one but some people seem to get a request for a product key when attempting to install W8 as a virtual machine.

You can download a free trial version for 30 days from the vmware site. ( it may be that eventually version 7.1x will work or the next upgrade of W8 will work so unless you want to upgrade to version 8 of vmware workstation I'd start with downloading the trial).

Then it installs OK

I don't have enough privileges yet to upload screenshot but it installs fine.

I've also posted a suggestion on how to remove / disable the metro gui for those that want a more "classical" Windows look - you can see the post in the W7 Forum until I can get approval to post in the relevant section on this Forum on customising W8

That works but it will complain about missing files, that's why you need to remove them from within Player.

I'm running Windows 7 and VMWare Workstation 7, and I cannot access the internet from any virtual machines using bridged connections. I used to be able to, so I'm not quite sure what happened. I did not modify anything within VMWare....

bridged connections are set as they were by default - to use vmnet0. They are capable of pulling an IP and DHCP info from the router, but beyond that they cannot access the internet or do anything else.

On the win7 host machine, under network adapters, I do not see vmnet0 listed - I'm not sure if it is supposed to be or not. It only shows vmnet1 (host-only) and vmnet8 (NAT).

I would rather use bridged connections if possible, but just cannot seem to get it to work.

Yesterday, I couldn't even get NAT to work. It could ping servers, but I couldn't actually use the internet - I guess ICMP was working but not TCP for some reason, although I hadn't modified anything. I updated from VMWare 6.5 to 7.0 and now NAT works, but bridged connections still fail.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be? I've searched the web for solutions but haven't found any that worked (disable vmware adapters, modify registry so that they don't show up under public unidentified networks, etc).

Could it be related to the fact that vmnet0 doesn't show up anywhere on the host machine? I'm not sure if it is supposed to or not - vmnet1 and vmnet8 both show up under network adapters and using ipconfig/all. However, vmnet0 does not show up between ei... Read more

I thought I would start a (impartial) discussion here as it would help me with it terms of how I might configure a new Windows 8 laptop.
Ok, VMWare Worstation 9 was released on the 23rd August. As a freelance consultant I want to configure Windows 8 Pro to run multiple server virtual farms (AD, SharePoint, exchange etc) . Since I want this to all be hosted on a reasonably high spec laptop so i7 > 16 GB DDR3 etc. I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on, or planning to evaluate this type of scenario, on either Client hyper-v or VMWorkstation 9

PerformanceBattery drain -Easy of creating snapshots of vm clonesUSB 3 support Ease of setting up a virtual networks of one or more servers and also internet connectivity testing metro apps in Windows 8 vms ability to move the the VMs in to a cloud service and vica versa
Let the debate begin

A:Windows 8 Client Hyper-v verses VMWare Workstation 9

Well, first and foremost, Hyper-V is going to be included for free, which VMWare Workstation 9.x currently is a $249.00 product.

I'm a VMWare user, but I use the enterprise products at work, am very familiar with how they work and have more of a need to keep things consistent. VMware has always been the better product for me as I often virtualize more Linux boxes than anything else and MS support of Linux clients as a VM has never been that good.

I have a license for VMWare Workstation 8.x, and am unsure yet if I will pony up the $119 for the upgrade. The feature set didn't seem like it was going to really be that advantageous for me. So, my experience on Workstation 9.x might continue to be lacking.

To me, it seems like you want to run MS apps, and you get Hyper-V for free. I would really start there and see if you have concerns. Then consider the cost and feature set of VMWare Workstation.

The vmware virtual pc is treated as a second computer,

On VMWare Workstation 11, running either Windows 8.1 or 10 Tech preview clients, disk usage spikes and sits at 100% or near there, from the time it starts up till the time I shut it down. For ex, just trying to get the Windows Tech build upgraded to build 10074 took, no lie, 11 hours!!!! Not acceptable.

Hello, The environment is as follows:
Windows 8.1 Pro with certain security updates installed causes an issue for Standard users using VMWare Workstation 8 where the mouse clicks that are meant for a VM, are not registered by the VM every time, sometimes it takes 4 to 5 clicks to register in
the VM and then other times you have to move the mouse outside the VM window and bring it back in for the mouse clicks to register. This issue is not present for Administrator users.
I have already narrowed down one update specifically that causes this issue, by uninstalling all security updates, the problem went away, as I installed one update at a time back on to the system, update KB3087039 triggered the issue, I thought this
was a resolution, to just keep that update off my end users machines, but when I installed the rest of the security updates, excluding that update, the issue returned.
I could uninstall and reinstall and narrow this down further, but my main concern is that one, this may create security issues that these updates are intended to fix, and two, that would create a lot of administrative overhead, especially if more security
updates in the future will cause the issue to return.
I would like for Microsoft to investigate this issue and either fix the problem with these updates or come up with a new update I can deploy that fixes this problem, if such an update already exists, I would greatly appreciate to be pointed in its direction
either by KB number o... Read more

A few years ago we bought a new car and I purchased a computer-based shop manual for the car from eBay. I installed it on two of my Windows 7 computers;a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version. Both of the installations went fine and the program runs fine on both of them.
The program runs in an environment called VMware Player, rather than just running in Windows 7 directly. I know very little about virtual machines, but I think that this one is running Windows XP as the OS in the window.
Yesterday, I decided to install the program on a computer that I built last year using an Asus B150 motherboard and an Intel Core i3-6100 processor. The installation went okay, but when I tried to launch the program in VMware Player, I get the BSOD with the following information:

 VMware Player.JPG   86.54KB
I have no idea what this is telling me. Can anyone point me to a solution to this problem?
Thanks in advance

A:Windows Crashed in VMware Player's Virtual Machine Window

If the program works fine on other systems you have...first thing I would do is uninstall it and reinstall, to see if the error was just a quirk of Windows.
If I still had a problem with said program...I would do the following.
1.  Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:  List last 10 Event Viewer log  List Installed Programs  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
2.  Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  Clicking on this link will automatically initiate the download.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.
The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.

I can't seem to find any way to increase the size of this file or configure it in any way -- is this just VMware using disk space or will my Guest eventually fail because lack of disk space. There's actually plenty of space on the HDD itself. !!

Hi all,
I am running RHEL4 as Guest OS in Dell studio 1555 laptop using VMWare Work Station with Windows XP SP3 as host OS in my Dell Studio 1555 model. But I am not able to set the display properly in RHEL4 which can perfectly fit to the laptop screen so that I can get rid of the troublesome job of scrolling to view the full page. I have at present chosen These options.
Monitor Type: LCD panel 1600 X 1200
Video Card: VESA driver (generic)
Resolution: 1600 X 1200
Color Depth: Millions of Colors

I tried various other options. But nothing else seems to be suitable. Do I have to install some dedicated driver to get the resolution option of 1600 X 900 which is the Display resolution of my Host OS (Windows XP). Dell Studio Laptops use ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 Display Adapters for 1555 model.

Can you please suggest me which option should I choose in RHEl 4 to get the 1600 X 900 resolution option and get rid of this problem?

Hi, I'm currently using my desktop computer as an host for about 7 VMware machines running at the same time.

I guess specs are included in the dump, but I'll put them here:
CPU: i7 2600k
SSD: samsung evo 840 120gb
RAM: 2x 4gb DDR3 1600mhz
GPU: nVidia 570 GTX

Currently under windows 8.1 final release build, with every last Windows updates available. (fresh install since yesterday)

After maybe 2 hours of somewhat intensive tasks, my computer restart itself saying : "Your PC ran into a problem" in the blue ribbon UI. If anyone can help me resolve the issue, I'm greatly opened to any fix; even if downgrading the OS is the solution.

Thanks guys, hope I can get rid of theses errors ASAP! If you need any more information, don't hesitate to ask me.
- Shinnyx

A:Running multiple instances of VMware causes BSOD

Available Physical Memory: 754 MB

This can cause issues with systems - to include BSOD's. I'd strongly suggest running fewer applications until you are able to add more RAM (if the system is capable of handling it).

This device doesn't have drivers installed:

Nexus 5 USB\VID_18D1&PID_4EE6&MI_01\7&F6AE341&0&0001 The drivers for this device are not installed.

Please either physically remove the device from the system, or install the latest, Win8.1 compatible drivers for it.

The oldest driver on your system is HECIx64.sys - which dates from 2010. This driver is a part of the Intel Management Engine program and must be updated to the latest, Win8.1 compatible version. Here's an older canned speech that I have about this:

Please update the Intel Management Engine (the driver is HECIx64.sys):

Try these links:

If that doesn't work, then try these Lenovo links:

Intel Management Engine Firmware 8.1 for Windows 8.1 (64-bit), 8 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), XP - ThinkPad

Finally, here's the link to the search I used:

I have been trying to configure a honeypot in VM using Bridged connection.

It is because that I have a server running Windows Server 2008 Standard. It works just fine and I am happy with that system. It is a "weak" computer, it is running on Intel Atom 1.6 GHZ, 2 GB ram, Club 3 grafic card. It is meant to be a powersaver. And no UAC enabled.

I have tried to install VmWare workstation, the same edition as I use here on my Vista. Works just fine. I can install it on Windows Server 2008 and I can get the dialog from which I can create a new VM. But I can't run the VM I have created. It dosn't give me an error message or anything, it simply just remain quite when I tries to open it.

I have installed Sun's Virtual Box and it runs fine with a XP installation, even better than I thought if you think that it is a Atom processor. I just need a linux installation.

Has somebody experienced anything similar?

I have been trying to use VMware Workstation Player 12 to install a Mac OS on my Windows computer.

However, when trying to load the image, it doesn't give me the option for Mac.

Does anyone know why this is? How I can fix it? Or is there another way I can install a virtual Mac OS.

Thank you

A:VMWare Workstation

I had a look at the Workstation 12 Pro page, which offers more functionality than the free Player 12, and Apple products aren't covered as a possible guest OS. I also had a look at VirtualBox, but they only support the installation of a Mac OS X server as a guest OS (see here).

A:VMware Workstation

Hi starcraftmasterVMware Workstation will indeed allow you to run an operating system within another. You say you want to run XP within ME. I am guessing that if you are running ME then perhaps your PC is fairly old and might not be up to running VMware. It would be best to vist their site and check out the system requirements for running it. http://www.vmware.com/products/ws/Note that you can trial VMware for 30 days before you have to part with your money. There are alternatives to VMwareMicrosoft's Virtual PC is free and can be found here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en However it is not supported on ME.Sun's Virtual Box is also free and can be found here http://www.virtualbox.org/ Again you will need to check out the system requirements for running it.

I have recently installed Redhat Enterprise V.3 as guest on Windows XP host using vmware.

After adding the necessary lines in the 2 ifcfg-eth0 files, the device eth0 is finding the IP correctly at boot time (or by usinf ifup eth0) and I can use folder sharing between the host and the gust. However I still can't connet to the Interent from the guest.

My windows host internet conection is working fine.
I had it working for a short peiod of time on the guest. (I was using VM - settings - customized - eth bridged-default)

Has anyone seen this before?

I have found that networking performance between a Windows 7 host and it's XP mode guest virtual machine is very poor. File copies between a Windows 7 host and XP mode are very slow, printing is also very slow if you configure the guest XP mode vm to print via a shared network printer on the host rather than having it redirected. I was working on an issue where XP mode was not properly assigning the port to the redirected printer causing print jobs to be hung up. I figured that configuring it to use a shared printer on the host OS would be more reliable than redirection, however i'm finding printing is very slow to the printer on the host OS, it prints fine to other network printers. It seems that this was discussed previously: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprovirt/thread/9cf7bb78-6c09-4807-9b39-f6735ce8a2e0 But there was no resolution other than not using virtual PC for the xp mode vm. Just wondering if anyone knew when Microsoft plans on fixing this problem with poor networking performance between a host and guest OS in Virtual PC.

Based on a scenario, I have queries as following.

VMware Workstation 12 Pro is installed in a Windows 10 Desktop. As guest OS, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows Server 2012 R2 are installed in VMware Workstation.I have to do a setup for networking practice with guest OS.I have DHCP enabled router installed by the internet service provider.
Network setting of all guest OS is bridged and I have to install and configure DNS, DHCP and AD in Windows Server 2012 R2.

I am not able to configure DNS and DHCP in Windows Server 2012 R2.
I read, only one DHCP can be configured in a LAN and already a DHCP-enabled router in this LAN.

Please guide me a tip and trick for setting up networking with guest OS in this scenario.

I believe, I explained well.

I have used Hyper V mainly, but have given the latest VMware a go. So far I'm liking it. Something it does that Hyper V didn't is allow me to connect USB device. I have not figured out the setting so I can see my host drives though. How do I enable that?

A:VMware workstation 12 player

I figured it out. Had to share the host HD, then map it.

Does anyone here have experience with VMWare workstation's 'management server'?
I run offline virtual machines but they require BOTH encryption and management, because of this I have consistently been having issues with this management server, the error is 'could not open virtual machine [path], failed to contact the restrictions management server. Check the address of the server', which is not surprising that it can't connect to the server; the host is offline. What does surprise me is that I've maxed out all the settings with regards to this management server (maximum 999 days without contact), but the error is STILL shown, really, 999 days have not passed since I created this virtual machine so why is the error being shown?
Does anyone have any solutions to this problem that should never have arisen?
