Preferred Solution: Windows starts up fine but runs for only 1-2 min before it freezes

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

When I start up windows it loads up normally but after about two minutes whatever I am doing freezes and not long after that the task bar freezes too but i can still move my mouse.
The computer has been like this for two days. It has been normal before this happened. I just turned on my computer in the morning and it screwed up. I did not install any big updates beforehand.

I have tried
-System Restore
-Scanning with Microsoft Security Essentials
-Scanning with Malwarebytes
-Searching through the event logs for a specific problem
-Restarting numerous times

msconfig seems to be the place that will make it work. If I disable all the services and open up steam and chrome it doesn't freeze (but there is no sound, wifi, or brightness)

I have tried enabling the sound and wifi etc services but I think there are some services that need to be running.
I've tried playing around with the general tab and the boot tab in msconfig too but nothing happened.

Please help as I use this laptop for making music and playing games (Currently in the middle of hl2 for the third time and earthbound zero / mother 1 on the nes)

Remove the recent windows updates and check.

There is a computer in one of my buildings which appears to start up normally. The thing appears to run normally for about ten minutes then freezes or hangs. Won't Ctrl-Alt-Delete, pulling power plug and re-attaching after 10 seconds then attempting to cold boot seems to have no effect. I can hear the fan whirring, though sometimes it makes a lot of noise (when it boots ok and works,) but I can get no video. This happened before and someone decided to replace the monitor, which I knew then was not the problem. Question: Bad Video Card? Or what else might it be?

Hi, all -

First, thanks for all you do to voluntarily help noobs like me keep our stuff working.

2 months ago, I had the HDD replaced on my laptop. Yesterday, it started "freezing" about 5 minutes after booting up. It isn't a true freeze as the mouse still works, but all programs stop responding and I have to force a shut down. No error messages (except that it will tell me that programs are not responding).

When I open in safe mode, everything works beautifully for as long as I want it to, but as soon as I boot normally, it does the same thing.

I've defragged, run memory tests, and everything comes up as operating as it should.

Other suggestions?

Hi, I would like to start off by my PC's specifications, I have a HP Mini 210-3002SA notebook, originally it had a 250GB Hard drive and a 1GB RAM, Windows 7 Started OS, my previous hard drive got corrupt and stopped working so I purchased a new 1TB hard drive in which the windows 7 starter was installed by a technician and I had upgraded the RAM to a 2GB . My PC was working fine until recently it kept coming up with an error for a missing Conduit BackgroundContainer.DLL file every time I started the PC, so I downloaded auto run from Microsoft website and had deleted the missing DLL file and checked the PC for viruses and there was one virus from Bettersurf and my antivirus software removed it. I started my PC again and it starts up fine but it freezes when I open any applications, SafeMode will not let me run the antivirus with or without networking and I have no idea what's happening. I uninstalled recently downloaded programs which were MS Visual Basic and Team Viewer before deleting the entire conduit file using auto run. So please please please help me... I appreciate your efforts and your help ...

PS. Since the new hard drive had only the window 7 OS installed, I had installed all the necessary software drivers that originally came installed in the PC from the HP Website using a USB for transferring the drivers from one PC to another until Wi-Fi was enabled. It still was not like how it' was originally with the speakers making crackling sounds.... Read more

This is my new system:

Core 2 Duo E6750
Asus P5N-D (nForce 750i)
2X2 GB Kingston KVR800D2N5K2/2G
Asus EN8800GT

It works perfectly in Vista x64, however in XP SP2 32-bit, as well as XP SP2 64-bit, the system freezes randomly (often with graphical corruption in the last frame(s)) despite the fact that I've installed the latest BIOS from ASus, latest drivers from Nvidia, and all available XP updates from Microsoft. These freezes started occuring right after I installed Windows XP, without any other drivers or outside programs present.

I should also mention both XP versions run fine (well, they don't lock up) while in safe mode.

Does anybody have any idea what the problem is?

A:Vista runs fine, XP freezes (and locks up) randomly

sometimes this problem is due to conflict of drivers(hardware, software)or programms
and rarely to malware
in your case, as you said they work fine in safe mode,
ok, then we can suppose that either program or service would cause this
if that's right, try to disable one after one by doing this:
start ==> run ==>type "msconfig" without quotes
choose (selective startup) option and try to unckeck one by one and restart to see
for now, I have no other solution.....when I get anything new, I'll tell you

are your versions unattended?? I mean aren't they original, downloaded from microsoft or not?
and you are using Professional or Home Edition Version?

A few mornings back, at regular morning start up time, my desk top Acer PC failed to start up and load. Lights on tower and keyboard both blinked on and off, monitor was dead, but nothing beyond that happened.

I unplugged, reconnected, attempted to power up repeated times, finally (since the first time this started, this now is daily pattern), for reasons I cannot pin point, it fires up, and runs all day like a champ.

The only thing different the night that proceeded the first morning this happened was it was a night here that called for me to keep the AC running all night, due to heat.

Any clue as to why this is happening and info on what will resolve it.

I thought, perhaps a hardware issue, but as I stated, once it starts, it runs all day long 100% normal.

hey guys
so i finally decided to install win7 x86 - everything went well - put all the standard stuff on there etc - i rebooted many times because of installations and updates
on my last reboot it just got stock in the bios screen (verifying dmi pool data..success! etc)
so i rebooted, same thing, took the disc out, same thing - turned off boot devices same thing
tried to use window's useless repair tools (whatever happened to repair install?) which didn't help - so i decided to format and reinstall - then it says it was unable to do that (partition error or something)

the annoying this is...is that this EXACT..i mean EXACT same thing happened when i installed vista sp1 from scratch - this happened - and to fix it i had to leave my pc open overnight with the hard drive cables all unplugged..in the morning with my fingers crossed i tried the installation again - and it worked.

my d: always disappears (single hard disk sata 233gig (250)) - sometimes it'll vanish from my computer and stuff - but this can't be the problem because the d: is a single drive on its own - my c: is a25gig partition from my e: - so it's completely unrelated.

does it matter how i replug the sata cables (2 of them) into the mother board? - they're both being recognised anyway

this is really annoying though - mostly because there isn't really an explanation - and because this random stuff always happens to my pc! - is it my hard drive because that's the only thing that would half- make sense :-/

A:installs fine, runs fine, reboots..not fine

Did you delete/recreate the partition? If you haven't then do this first and try re-installing Win 7. I wouldn't recommend removing the watermark as that can have unpredictable results.

You guys have been very helpful in the past so I thought I'd come to you preventatively this time. My Dell laptop is five years old and I won't be able to purchase a new one for another year or two. As far as I know, I don't have any major virus or problems, but gradually my computer has become very slow, and sometimes it freezes. Loading photos on Facebook is a common situation it freezes in, but it happens with other things too. It also starts up very slow, and it can take awhile for windows to open.

So far I have tried a number of fixes: System Restore, defragmenting, freeing up space on the hard drive, rearranging items on hard disk, deleting programs I know I don't use, scanning and removing spyware/viruses with Kaspersky/Spybot Search & Destroy/Ewido Anti-Malware/Spyware Blaster, and deleting temp files as suggested by a similar thread in this forum. Basically what the title says. I have a new computer which I spent about 1300 dollars on. I built it myself and everything ran fine for about 6 months until I tried to overclock it. The bios and overclocking are pretty ***** proof since the motherboard is fairly new. You literally hit one button from normal to overclock. Since then when I boot the computer up the computer comes on for about 3 seconds, the monitor doesn't react at all, then it shuts itself off for another 3 seconds then boots up normally. Any ideas what the problem is or how to fix it? I've seen some similar cases on here but they aren't exactly the same.

I thought that it was an issue with windows, so I re-installed. Same problem. I took apart computer to make sure that nothing was loose. No problem there. I also ran S.M.A.R.T check, again no problem. When I ran a surface scan, there were no problems there. I am completely lost, please, any suggestion would be helpful. Thank You

The console (terminal) part of the screenshot shows Linux version being run.

Hi, I have a strange issue with my PC, I keep getting BSOD whenever I power my PC on. It BSOD's a few minutes after booting Windows or sometimes half way through loading with different error messages and usually repeats the same process about 3 times, after that all is fine. The PC will not crash at all, and would be on for hours on end, either idling, playing media/gaming/browsing etc.

BSOD Error messages are often; driver not equal or less etc, USB Bug code, non page area etc.

I have attached a few days worth of Minidumps that have been created (most recent).

Please note, iv'e tested my memory (which most always suggest) and Memtest found no faults on a full test. And I know for sure it cannot be that otherwise it would crash whilst doing something that requires much more memory use.

Iv'e took every USB's out of the ports and the problem is still there.

It must be a corrupt driver of some kind or a problem with bootup/system files?

It isn't that my computer is slow. Programs, once loaded and running, appear fine. But loading takes forever. The worst example is explorer: Click on Start, wait two minutes, click on explore, wait two minutes, click on the C:\ drive, wait two minutes, and so on down the tree.

A similar (but less horrible) problem occurs when I launch a program from the Desktop: There is often a two minute delay before the program starts. Similarly, a running program that is minimized takes a couple of minutes of appear after clicking on the taskbar. (The good news is it starts immediately if I use Task Manager.)

A third problem is that Windows Backup and Restore doesn't run so I can't get at my backup!

Here's a possible clue as to what is wrong: Reboot has recently taken over half an hour. But when I shut down the AVG resident monitor reboot took only 13 minutes. In both cases screen icons were painted in bursts with a delay of 2 minutes between bursts, but with AVG on only a few icons were painted in each burst while with AVG off the system painted 39 icons in the first burst and the rest in the second. But there's still that persistent 2 minute delay...

And, by the way, extremeboy says I don't have a virus infection (anymore)...

Hello everyone,

I haven't been able to find any information about an error similar to this online so I'm posting this question here, hope you guys can help.

I recently fried my motherboard over some 512 DDR 2100 that I bought. I think purchased a SOYO Dragon mobo (P4VTP) which was compatable with 2100-3200 ddr ram and any P4 system.

Everything ran fine, (1x 512 ddr 2100, 1x 256 ddr 2100, 1x 256 ddr 2700, P4 1.6ghz) then a few reboots later I got a bluescreen with somethign to the effect of "hardware malfunction contact manufacturer" this happens after it checks my ram and starts to load windows.

Now the odd thing is if I reboot once more it skips this bluescreen completely, loads windows and everything works fine. I've been doing this for a few days while I check for a solution but I'm afraid it's not goign to work forever =\.

I have no idea what could be causing this, software side drivers or something or literally hardware problems. This is a brand - new board as of 2 weeks so I can't return it and I'm hoping since it runs fine after reboot its something connected to the board causing problems.

The only thing I can think of is - excuse my ignorance as I explain this - my ide connection to my cd-rom... on my older boards I've connected my CD-ROM to an ide slot below my PCI-slots... except on this board the slot is | yay big| while the ide cable that is required for my DVD rom is about | yay big | ... so I used IDE-slot ... Welcome to the bleeping computer forum
Unfortunately, intermittent issues are one of the difficult fault to troubleshoot. Please follow the below steps to collect some basic info about your system.
1 ) Generate a report about your system using Speccy by reading the guide below.
Post the web link displayed by Speccy in next reply.
2 ) Download and run Minitoolbox from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/
Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.
-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size
Now click "Go" and post the output in next reply
After reading your logs, either me or any other forum volunteer will assist to you to diagnose the issue.
Don't ever use the registry cleaning function in CCleaner or Glary utilities. Only use them to clean the temp files. Using registry cleaners may cause unpredictable damage to the registry. If anyone properly knows which registry keys are garbage, that is only Microsoft.

Been having a few problems. Here's the low down...
1. Recently had a trojan virus that ran SYSTEM32.EXE on windows start up
2. System32.exe was using up all of system resources so I went in and deleted anything that I downloaded recently (Several video codecs) then ran spybot search & destroy and I thought that did it.
3. When starting computer windows 2000 started up and that was it, I was frozen. System32.exe was also still hanging around
4. In safe mode - Ran McAfee, it found the backdoor and I got rid of that and also found the system32.exe file in my registry and deleted that.
5. Computer still will not run under normal mode, windows starts up, then the restore active desktop screen comes up and that's it, I'm done. AND DAMMIT ALL, I just looked in the task manager in safe mode and that damn SYSTEM32.EXE is still there. I have searched high and low for this file. It is not in windows/system, wondows/system32, and I went through regedit and looked and only found one and I thought that would do it. Anyone know where else this thing hides?
Maybe something got deleted in my registry, I don't know anymore. I will try and get a listing of my computer fils at start up if someone can remind me what program that is.
Thanks a lot

Press that, save the log somewhere, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless, don't fix anything yet.
Then in HijackThis Config -> Misc Tools, Generate a StartupList and copy those contents here as well.

I recently built a new computer and ever since I installed Windows XP the system completely freezes after 5-10 min. I tried taking out both sticks of ram ( not at the same time obviously) both DVD burners, both HD's, and my network card, assuming it was a hardware problem, nothing helped. I loaded Linux Ubuntu and it worked flawlessly, the only problem is I need windows to run Photoshop (a must have for my job). Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Ever since i got my pc it has had this issue. I thought updates would fix it because the last pc i bought had the same problem. When it freezes i can move the mouse but everything else is unresponsive for a while. It often freezes after the pc has started up or when im browsing, often at random times when i just have paint open and nothing else. All my drivers are up to date. i run ccleaner everyday. I use MalwareBytes. i tried disabling my cloud, changing my power settings and reinstalling everything, nothing seems to work. ive had this pc for about 6 months and updates havent been able to fix the problem. Even before i got malwarebytes and avast the problem has been there. System often makes disk go to 100%, a lot of times it says its service host too. I feel as though i have tried everything. I'm frustrated. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all,

First time poster here, having some problems with my Windows 7 install. Ever since this evening, about 15 minutes into my Windows 7 session, I notice that it starts running slower (mostly in any web browsers I'm running). Then, one by one, it seems as if systems just stop. First, I can't load any web pages. Then, my wallpaper rotator stops. Then, I can't close windows or it takes minutes to close a window. Then, I can't open any programs. Finally, it gets to the point where I can't shut it down. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion. I have tried doing so from the Start Menu (which shows up, but may freeze itself) and from the command line, and it's as if the OS doesn't care. I have to do a hard reboot, after which twice it's run a CHKDSK and found orphaned files and other errors. (I've had to do this at least 8 times tonight.)

Here is my system information:
HP Pavillion dv7-1127cl laptop (17")
320 GB HD, split into three partitions (~220 GB for Windows 7, 10 GB for extra space, and 60 GB for a Ubunto install I completed Tuesday)
Processor: AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-72 2.10 GHz
Ram: 4 GB
It originally had Vista on it (it was purchased in December 2008), but I installed 7 on the 220 GB partition a week ago. Vista worked fine until about July 2009, when it started going slow and becoming unstable. That's when I split off the 60 GB partition for a Win ... Read more

I would make a virus scan my top priority

I would also try disabling all third party apps and services to see if add on software is giving you the problem. In MSconfig uncheck all items under startup and in services tab tick hide all MS services then uncheck the rest.
This should give you some idea whether problem lies within windows or 3rd party software

The SFC scan will also help give you an idea of whats going on

Hello. First time posting here. I have a Dell Dimension 4700 desktop with Windows XP home edition.

When I turn my computer on, the screen immediately goes to a black screen with a flashing white cursor at the top left corner. It stays like that forever. Nothing happens when I press any keys.

Naturally, I tried to start in safe mode and also start Windows from my CD. When I try to press F2, F8, or F12 after turning on my computer, I see the initial "Windows XP" screen very briefly, before it changes to white text in an old-school font on a black background. It says:
Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUSVersion 1.10A03
Copyright 1985-1988 Phoenix Technologies
Copyright 1990-2004 Dell Inc
All rights Reserved
Dell System Dimension 4700 Series
BIOS version A03
Keyboard failure

The "keyboard failure" makes one think that it doesn't like the F2, F8 or F12 keys being pressed when starting up. When I try pressing them more slowly, I just get the black screen with a white cursor.

I haven't had a virus in months, and I have not installed any new programs recently. This problem was very sudden.

The computer is 8 years old, the hard drive is about 4 years old.

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

My computer goes through the boot process, I put in the password, and just after I see the desktop, it freezes. Most of the desktop icons remain white. The hard drive is sounding like it's still active and the HD light continues to flash. It will start in safe mode, though.

I've tried to restore it And ran a virus scan. I've tried re-seating the memory and video card. I don't have any "spare parts" to try and swap out nor do I have the budget (6 kids) to just buy other parts to "hopefully" fix it, and like all of you, I really need this running asap.

Any help or suggestions you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!

Hello and welcome ashaw mate run these in safe mode first up

If you can get Speccy to run say from a stick made on another machine then let us know what the temps are.
I would also like to see what the PSU is putting out too but if the machine is not running past that Window then can you measure the volts on the 24 pin with a digital multimeter - they are not expensive and let us know what the different coloured cables produce.
You just need to put the black lead into any black cabled pin on that socket and then just test the rest ie red , yellow and orange to find the volts. There is one cable that is grey (pin 8) I am interested in what that reads.
See this ATX 24 pin power supply connector pinout diagram @ pinouts.ru just make sure you ground any static electricity from yourself before you touch anything inside the case ie touch a water tap or suchlike.

Hello all,
I think my problems are of various nature and I start to think it might be hardware related but not too sure. Let me explain a bit about the history.

Around April this year it started, that my Windows 7 pro 64bit system, which was running fine for 2 years had it's hicups. When running Chrome or Skype it just started to freeze every now or then apps didn't run at all. I believed it's was an application issue, but in the end I wasn't able to fresh install Skype anymore so I ran a Malware check.
But no malware was found.

So I thought maybe the registry is so messed up that I might have to look into a fresh install. Also I thought that way I get a fresh clean system and remove old entries that just slow down my machine. I didn't mind doing a clean installation at this point.

I had various problems during the reinstall and ended up till now with roughly 8 reinstallations of my system. All went fine up to the point, when I had to update the netframework. At that point, the updates just failed.

With the latest reinstallation I just skipped the windows updates from 2012 alltogether and it ran fine for a while. Now I get again random freezes (black screen, like if the monitor just switches off) or on boot up it can't find the Desktop and tries to configure it for around 5 minutes.

I ran malware checks, used ccCleaner and avast. Everything looks fine. I also ran the svc check that I found somewhere to do, but wasn't sure how o interpret the data.

I now ... Read more

Please post back a screenshot of your maximized Disk Mgmt Drive map and listings, using the Snipping TOol in Start Menu. We can see if its configured correctly from that.

Then start working through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

If you withheld installing all Windows Updates after a reinstall then you are not running Win7. YOu should install all Updates and run with Updates set to Automatic. The possibility of Updates messing up your PC is less than one in a million so there is something else wrong most likely.

I would look over these steps which spell out how to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 as if you stick closely to them and use only the tools and methods within then you will be assured of having a perfect install. You can then backup a System image in case it becomes irreparable, used to reimage the HD or its replacement in 20 minutes.

Installs should also always be done with only the target HD plugged in, to avoid interference from other HD's. This alone could be a problem which we should be able to see from the screenshot.

I can be running the system for quite a while, and then all of a sudden, the fan goes crazy making a very, very loud grinding sound, at which time I simply put the system to slepp and then wake up and the fan runs fine again. It would seem that I need a new fan; what is the model that I should get?  Perhaps I need to clean the fan?  I do feel a breeze of air coming from the exhaust so it seems to work fine most of the time.

This has been an ongoing issue.
It's come to the point where I'd actually like to know what's going on for educational purposes.
The games themselves run fine WHILE they run.

Whenever I play a game, it shuts the game down in 1-10 minutes or the computer will shut down. No matter what.
No other application will shutdown. More often than not just the game will shut down.

Troubleshooting I've done.

Cleaned out all parts with compressed air.
Monitored the temp of all components. Gpu not over 60. Cpu not over 75 at any point.
Replaced that graphics card.
Replaced that power supply and tested with 2 OTHER known working psus (Because this screams power issue)
Replaced the ram.
Replaced the OS hard drive and reinstalled the OS clean on a new one. (Issue occurs within Windows 8, XP and Windows 7)
Uninstalled Drivers for my graphics card and installed different ones (After cleaning the drivers out in Safe Mode)
Checked the motherboard for bulging/burst capacitors but it seems fine.
2 memory passes on my ram going through them systematically to make sure all the dimms work.

So it's the Processor or the Motherboard.

Has anyone had an issue like this before? Can anyone give me any tools to better diagnose the health of my CPU or mobo before I give up on this rig and go blow $2000 on another box.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't think the issue here is the hardware.

I'm not a Windows whiz by any means, but I'm usually able to solve the problems I run into on my machines. This one's got me stumped:

I leave my Sony Vaio VGN-FW290J, running Windows 7 SP1, running one night while I go out for some errands. On my return, the thing has crashed pretty bad (I-can't-even-move-the-mouse bad). Whatever. I do a hard restart of the computer, decline safe mode, and the thing starts up just fine. Well, it was pretty slow, actually. Windows freezes up on me within two minutes (it's still loading up startup programs during that time). I entered into a cycle of startup, hard restart, startup, hard restart, ... until I was convinced of the permanence of the issue.

I became unhappy then, since I knew something was wrong, and this computer hadn't had a real problem in about 4 years of usage.

My first thought was to do a virus scan, so I booted into safe mode and started Avast to get cracking. Two "threats" were found in a full scan: both were very old files. I removed them and I still had the same problem.

I then deactivated every single startup program except the ones I thought were absolutely necessary. No beans. I currently have these set to autostart:
Alps pointing-device driver (Tracker Pad)
HD Audio Control panel (Audio Card)
Realtek Voice Manager (Audio Card)
Microsoft Windows Operating System
ISB Utility (Battery Utility)
Catalyst Control Center (Video Card)
I'm not really sure what to do. I haven't been able to localize the crashing to... Read more

A:Windows 7 freezes up soon after startup - works fine in safe mode

If it works fine in Safe Mode and its not related to hardware, I would assume that you have an application that loading at startup that is causing you some problems. So why dont you use msconfig to scale back all the startups and then add them back to see which is causeing the problem
