Microsoft confirms no more Windows 10 feature updates in 2016; two coming in 2017

Microsoft published a TechNet blog post on Tuesday regarding what's new in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. In the article, the company confirmed that it has two feature updates planned for 2017, but no more for this year.

Based on feedback from organizations moving to Windows 10, this will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.

The news is right in line with current rumors. Tuesday's Anniversary Update would be the one feature update for this year, and Redstone 2 - the codename for the next major Windows 10 update - isn't slated to arrive until April 2017. Redstone 3 is rumored as well, but without any release timing, so with today's news, it's presumably late 2017.

It's also in line with what Microsoft has already said. Back in May, the firm said that it would be pushing two feature updates for Windows 10 every year.

The obvious question that you're probably asking is, if Microsoft said that it would release two updates per year, why would the company only release one this year? Well, when Microsoft says the word 'year', it could mean a calendar year, or it could mean a fiscal year, which would be over at the end of June. With that in mind, the firm has released two major updates for Windows 10 every year, and is on pace to do so, even with Redstone 2 coming in April.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

No specifics on the release date were provided though

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9926 a couple of weeks ago with quite a lot of improvements, including a working version of Cortana and a revamped version of the Start menu, but it turns out that the company is already planning a brand new release for this month.

During the January 21 Windows 10 event at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Joe Belfiore said that the software firm wanted to update Windows 10 Technical Preview much more often than before and hinted that a new build would indeed come in February, most likely together with the preview version of Windows 10 for phones.

Now Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, has confirmed in a couple of tweets that Microsoft is indeed working to bring a new Windows 10 Technical Preview build to users, but he has explained that no specifics can be provided right now.

Microsoft has been fairly tight-lipped about the next feature update to Windows 10. We know what's coming, due to Insider Preview builds, but the firm hasn't announced what it will be called, or when it's coming. The 1803 version number indicates that it will be finalized this month, but that doesn't mean it will be generally available.

According to a Microsoft Developer blog post that was published in February and then modified today, the Windows 10 spring update will land for the public in April, confirming everyone's suspicions. It also says that support for the update will end in October 2019, giving it the standard 18 months. If it's like previous versions though, Microsoft will end up extending it for an additional six months, which might make one wonder why the company doesn't just give it two years of support from the beginning.

The document also lists the 'Initial Build' as 17115, which would imply that the current Fast and Slow ring build is indeed the RTM, or the one that non-Insiders will get. We can confirm that this is not the case; in fact, it can't be. Xbox One uses Windows 10 as well, and the Preview Alpha ring is already on build 17118. Despite Windows 10 and Xbox One having different version numbers for Redstone 4 (1803 and 1804, respectively), they will land on the same major build number.

Obviously, we're all still waiting on a specific date in April that Microsoft will release the spring update, a... Read more

Microsoft Makes Windows 10 Updates Smaller and Faster with New OS Feature

Microsoft has officially introduced the new so-called Unified Update Platform (UUP) which is the company?s latest attempt to make Windows 10 updates smaller and faster on both PCs and smartphones.

In essence, UUP is a new technology that makes it possible for Windows 10 devices to download only the changes that have been implemented since the previous update, which should significantly improve the delivery of large OS updates, as it?s the case of the upcoming Creators Update due in early 2017. These differential updates thus make it possible to receive only the latest improvements and not a full OS build.

UUP will be available on PCs and smartphones powered by Windows 10, but not on Xbox One consoles, as Microsoft is not shipping updates via Windows Updates here.

The company explains that download size can be decreased by as much as 35 percent, which is definitely a big achievement and comes in handy especially for users with slow Internet or limited bandwidth.

Faster checking for updates
Microsoft says that it?s also working on making checking for updates more efficient by changing how the system works on Windows 10 devices.

?We are reducing the update data sent to client devices as well as the amount of processing we are doing on devices, this especially important for devices built on the Mobile OS. Using UUP, when your device checks for updates, the Windows Update service will evaluat... Read more

That depends on how you plan on reinstalling Windows 10.

Do it this way and you lose everything, including all your data files and Office 2016 completely, including updates. You will have to reinstall everything:

My Windows Office 2016 subscription expires this month.
I need to renew but I was wondering when 2017 is going to be released.
I searched online but I found a lot of stuff on 2016, but nothing for 2017.
It probably won't be released this month but I thought I would check, because I don't want to buy it this week and have a new version come out next week.

I don't think MSFT does this for Office like they do for Windows 10, but if we purchase an Office product and there are changes during the year, do they issue updates? I don't recall any.
If they issue 2017 after I buy the 2016 version does it get updated when they release the new version? I don't think they do, but I thought I would ask.

Many thanks!

Office is not updated to a new version every year - for Windows was 2010, then 2013 then 2016.

If you get a subscription now you will get 2016 (plus latest updates) and it will automatically update to latest version whenever it is released (assuming your subscription is still valid).

Some of the users who experienced issues caused by the recently-released Windows 10 cumulative update KB4013429 complained that not even System Restore worked and, in many cases, the Windows Reset feature failed to complete when all files were supposed to be removed.

And it turns out that System Restore not working is actually a widespread bug, with Microsoft confirming in an announcement that it?s aware of the issue and working on a fix.

Specifically, Microsoft says that in some cases System Restore fails with error 0x80070091, so the recovery process does not complete and leaves users with no solution to restore PCs.

Microsoft confirms Windows 7 install trick is legal

Microsoft employee chides 'hacks,' reminds users of licensing rules

October 29, 2009 04:03 PM ET

Computerworld - Microsoft today confirmed that users can apply a workaround trick to do a clean install of Windows 7 on a blank hard drive as long as they toe the licensing line.

In a blog post earlier this week, Eric Ligman, who works in Microsoft's worldwide partner group, took exception to stories that showed people how to use the less-expensive Windows 7 upgrade editions to install the new operating system on blank drives. Computerworld covered the upgrade install trick -- first reported by noted Windows blogger Paul Thurrott -- last Friday.

"Over the past several days there have been various posts, etc. across a variety of social media engines stating that some 'hack' (be it a person or a procedure) shows that a Windows 7 Upgrade disc can perform a 'clean' installation of Windows 7 on a blank drive from a technical perspective," said Ligman.

"They often forgot to mention a very basic, yet very important piece of information," said Ligman about Thurrott's blog post and the resulting reports by others. "'Technically possible' does not always mean legal," Ligman said.

Microsoft rolled out a new Windows 10 cumulative update for PCs running version 1607 (Anniversary Update), and just as we reported yesterday, there were plenty of users who experienced installation issues.

In a post on the firm?s Community forums, Microsoft engineers confirm the installation problems and explain that the team is already investigating and developing a fix.

There are no details as to when exactly this new cumulative update fix could be released, but it?s worth noting that Microsoft itself says that there?s no point in trying to install this cumulative update because it?ll keep failing anyway.

?Teams have dug into this issue and do believe the cause has been identified. The correct team is developing a fix/workaround and once we have the full details, we'll be posting that information. What?s more frustrating, however, is that this cumulative update actually experienced the exact same issues when being tested ... Read more

It appears that the HP Elite x3?s highlight feature?the ability to run PC software on a phone?may actually find its way into Windows 10 Mobile?s core at some point in the future.

Frequent Windows sleuth WalkingCat dredged up hints of Windows 10's ability to emulate x86 (read: PC) software on ARM (read: mobile) processors, via a ?CHPE? designation in code.

Mary Jo Foley, a Windows reporter with impeccable sources, followed up on the report today. Foley says ?CHPE? indeed refers to Microsoft plans to introduce x86 emulation to Windows 10 in a ?Redstone 3? update in fall 2017. The ?C? stands for ?Cobalt,? Microsoft?s code name for x86 emulation, according to her sources; ?HP? literally stands for the company HP; and ?E? remains unclear, but potentially stands for ?emulation.?

So why does this matter? Because native x86 software support would dramatically improve the utility of Continuum.

Microsoft has confirmed officially a zero-day security vulnerability affecting Internet Information Services (IIS). The security hole was initially reported just ahead of Christmas on December 23rd, and the Redmond company provided the first response at the end of the past week. So far, the issue in question affects version 6 of IIS on a fully patched Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2; however, additional IIS
releases might also be impacted. A Microsoft security program manager notes that

Microsoft is aware of the problem and that investigation into the matter has already been kicked off. At the same time, the program manager assured customers running IIS that it hasn?t detected any active attacks in the wild targeting the new 0-day flaw.

The vulnerability identified in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) involves the incorrect manner in which the server deals with files with multiple extensions. As long as the multiple extensions are divided by the ?;? character, the IIS server handles them as ASP files.

A possible attacks scenario could be based on an exploit constructed out of malformed executables. Any malicious files uploaded to a vulnerable web server would circumvent any file extension protections and restrictions in place.

A:Microsoft confirms 0-Day IIS security vulnerability

We’ve completed our investigation into the claims that came up over the holiday of a possible vulnerability in IIS and found that there is no vulnerability in IIS.

What we have seen is that there is an inconsistency in IIS 6 only in how it handles semicolons in URLs. It’s this inconsistency that the claims have focused on, saying this enables an attacker to bypass content filtering software to upload and execute code on an IIS server.

The key in this is the last point: for the scenario to work, the IIS server must already be configured to allow both “write” and “execute” privileges on the same directory. This is not the default configuration for IIS and is contrary to all of our published best practices. Quite simply, an IIS server configured in this manner is inherently vulnerable to attack.

Many mobile systems donīt have one anymore, and they still sell. This is a niche requirement, and Lenovo, who is a company with a wide lineup, has other models to fullfill that need. Aka the ThinkPad T460s, which is dimension and weight wise almost exactly the same as your X1 Carbon 2015, but with an SD Card reader, Ethernet, upgradeable RAM etc.

Today, at Microsoft Connect(); we spoke about the work we have been doing to align the concepts and tags that can be shared between Microsoft?s XAML UI systems. With Windows 10 XAML and Xamarin.Forms, we expose the full and unique capabilities of each platform. Xamarin.Forms focuses on native mobile experiences and exposing the common subset of controls and capabilities needed most by mobile developers. Windows 10 XAML and WPF are optimized for native Windows experiences, including the most rich and demanding experiences optimized for use with mouse, keyboard and touch. We are releasing a preview of Xamarin.Forms which includes additional APIs that advance XAML Standard, including new types names and properties for common elements you will recognize from Windows 10 XAML. I encourage you to check out the APIs at: aka.ms/xamlstandard and provide us with your feedback. We look forward to working with you.

Complete article at Microsoft confirms Russian pill-pusher attack on its network ? The Register

The admission came in response to an article The Register published on Tuesday. It reported that two internet addresses belonging to Microsoft were helping to route traffic to more than 1,000 websites that belong to a fraudulent online pharmacy known as the Canadian Health&Care Mall. Microsoft on Wednesday said an investigation of that report confirmed the hijacking was the result of an attack on machines connected to its network.

One of the IPs was involved in a DDoS of Brian Krebs site:

The attackers then told machines they controlled to access a number of non-existent pages at sites that were pointing to the Internet address my hosting provider has assigned to KrebsOnSecurity.com ( This forced several hundred or thousand machines to direct their traffic at my site, all in an attempt to prevent legitimate visitors from visiting it.

Contrary to reports, a bug that Microsoft patched last week had been publicly discussed a year and a half ago, security researchers said this week.

Microsoft confirmed Wednesday that it overlooked the vulnerability when it was revealed last year.

The vulnerability in Windows Print Spooler service was one of four exploited by Stuxnet. ...

It turns out that one of the four -- the vulnerability Microsoft patched last week with its MS10-061 update -- was technically not a zero-day, said Liam O Murchu, manager of operations with Symantec's security response team.

According to O Murchu, the print spooler flaw was first revealed in a security publication's 2009 issue. He did not name the magazine. ...

Paris-based Vupen Security, however, pointed a finger at Hackin9, a Polish publication. Computerworld was easily able to locate a PDF of the 2009 issue on the Internet.

In that issue, a researcher named Carsten Kohler spelled out how to abuse the print spooler service to hijack Windows PCs and even included source code for a working exploit.

This was apparently the work of the US and Isreali governments in an attempt to stop Iran's nuclear program. It has already reportedlly been used on a number of sites in Iran earlier this year and is one of the reasons believed to have caused the delay in the plants completions. News on the virus and the windows exploits started showing up shortly after.

Hello All, There was one similar thread, but it seemed to be closed. When the power is plugged in on this new machine (7th Gen CPU / etc., but not the new model with the pen), there is a very faint static noise (possibly to the speakers). With the power disconnected it is not audible. Anyone else hear this?  FYI, it can be heard when the system is in sleep - not just when it is on.  It does not sound like "coil whine" - it could be bad grounding or something like that. R

I hv been trying to find The solution of renewing the IP Address In XP/2k/98/me for several purposes like CABLE Modem connections, Small Home Networks. But if the IP address is 169.254.*.* IT SHOWS THAT NIC(HARDWARE) IS WORKING ..(Am i correct..)

According to Site http://www.practicallynetworked.com/

Problem: Network Connection Has IP Address 169.254.x.x

Description: The network card is configured to obtain an IP address automatically, and itís connected to a network with a DHCP server: hardware router, another computer running Internet Connection Sharing, cable modem, DSL modem, etc. But
it gets a 169.254.x.x IP address, which indicates that it canít communicate with the DHCP server:

Possible Solutions:

Connect the computer using a different Ethernet cable or hub/switch/router port.
Download and install the latest firmware for the hardware router.
Disable XPís Internet Connection Firewall on the local area network connection.
The card is configured to automatically sense network speed and duplex mode, but auto-sensing is failing. Configure the speed and duplex mode manually. For example, most switches and routers use 100 Mb speed and full duplex. To make the settings, right click the network connection and click Properties | Configure | Advanced.
Un-install the network card and move it to a different slot.
If you have a cable modem connection, turn off the computer, turn off the cable modem, and wait a few minutes. Turn on the cable modem, and then turn on... Read more

A:Do something about this Microsoft's Windows Ugly Feature...

Check out this page for the solution...including a link (near the bottom of the page) to download a small .reg file that will do the registry fixes for you.

Just tried the link and it doesn't work so it looks like you'll have to do the registry fix manually.

Dear IT Pros,
I have 2 questions that need your help and professional advice.
1) Does Microsoft has a tool to check whether a patch (KB) was superseded by another KB? In my case, I'm trying to search whether this KB4022715 and KB4025339 (both of this KB was released in 2017) was superceded
by another KB. This is because a security consultant has advised us to install both of this KB to prevent vulnerabilities but since it was released back in 2017, I suspect there must be a newer KB that supercedes it
2) Can advice what KB I need to download regarding this 2 bulletin ID CVE-2017-5715 and CVE-2019-11135? Can't seem to find it after much googling

Thanks in advance for the help

I received notification that 8 important updates were available. My heart sank, but I started Windows Update installing them and went away. When I came back my heart sank further when I found that the updates had been cancelled (see screenshot if I can post one here). Your instructions for posting about failed updates are to download System Update Readiness Tool, which I am supposed to run uninterrupted. It may take a few hours. Sorry, I do not have a few hours. Is there anything I can do in the meantime or do I trash my computer?
