Design Software Font and Font / Icon Size issues

Q: Design Software Font and Font / Icon Size issues

Hi, I've the IdeaCentre AIO 700 24-ish and as I have seen and read all over the net, there are issues with tiny fonts, etc on some programs, apps, etc. I have seen many issues relating to that and have the problem myself. I have Gimp, Inkspace and a couple other open design programs ( no need to bash them ) on it now to test out - and the fonts and icons are so tiny I cannot see what I am doing. Same with Avira and a couple other programs and apps. Can read it if I use a magnifying glass. I have done all the right adjustments, etc and it never changes. I know the desktop is not designed for a designer/artist, per say, but I am and have this one.I've both read and been told it's an issue with the software and app creators/developers not being on the same page and unless and until they are, the tiny fonts and icons on some things just have to remain. The icons on Gimp for my tools of about 20, could all fit on a square the size of a sugar cube. My question is, is that, in fact, an issue with no resolve ...or not? I am about to begin a home design business and would like to perhaps get Adobe Illustrator, but to spend the money and have tiny fonts and icons would be a crapfest for me. I bought the desktop a year ago having been told it was superior for design programs from Best Buy and investigations showed nothing otherwise and just actually relocated and am using it finally....and I find myself in Micro Icon Park in the middle of Tinyfontville. What can I do, if anything? Seems that there is no changing abilities for these and I don't want to throw even more money away with Illustrator. Thank you in advance for any kind help!Kevin

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This was excellent with the RC version of win 7, I mean, it installed it all on its own, it was like it read my mind and knew that I was getting old and I was going to be happy with the font size.

Well, it all changed with the RYN version, I manually had to use the 125% dpi option, which worked well with the icon sizes but not so much with the font size withing the content window.

The size is awesome on this site but not so much on others and/or the software I use... see example.

I have also gone to the "Change Window Colors and Metrics" and sorted some other stuff but, I can't for the life of me, change the "Window Text" inside the "Active Window"... again, see image attached.

My problem is that at my 46 yrs of age, my eyesight is not that bad, hence the problem I am having. I mean, I can see 20/20 for most everything but, fine print within 1 is when all hell breaks loose and my computer is within 1 & 2 so its a toss up

Anyways, what else I can do?

A:Changing font size... not the icon

If changing the Display resolution isn't working (Control Panel - Appearance and Personalization - Display - Screen Resolution "Make text and other items larger or smaller") isn't doing it, Windows IE 8 has a tab in the lower right corner to jack up the resolution in the browser. For sites that have small text on parts of them, you can jump the resolution from 125% to 150, or better.

Here's another suggestion from Dwarf, in an earlier thread:

"Try this. Click Tools and Internet Options. On the General tab, under Appearance, click Accessibility. In the Formatting section, click to check (place a tick) the option Ignore font sizes specified on webpages and then click OK twice."

A:Changing default font and font size on hotmail

You may use your personal e-mail signature to choose default font in windows live hotmail...

In the options menu, select "more options" and then "personal e-mail signature". Choose the desired font style, size and color and type the phrase "text here". Save changes.

Now all you have to do, when writing a new message or a reply is highlight the phrase "text here" and start typing. It's that simple!

I have connected my laptop to a 40" LCD TV using HDMI cable and everything works fine. Since the desktop icons/fonts on the TV shows default (small) size from the laptop, in order for me to see it from the distance I have to change the desktop icons/fonts to a larger size.

Here is my question; Is there a way to set up a different desktop icon/fonts size to match the TV and the laptop? (perhaps different profile settings???) Meaning, when I disconnect the HDMI cable from the TV, I want the size of the icons/fonts go back to default/small size icons and vice versa .

Hope this question makes sense.
Thanks in advance!

I can't think of anything that exist within windows. It wasn't necessarily designed to be used on 40" LCD from 10' away in the way you are using it. That's why Windows Media Center's fonts are so much bigger.

Per this Topic here on 7F: dual monitor text is different sizes between screens you're out of luck.

The text font in the Chrome tabs along the top of the screen is too hard to read - as is the address bar and icons. I've set my graphics dpi to a setting which is fine for all other apps and don't want to change it. The Chrome default text size has no effect, Google has not acted on feedback and I can't find a solution by Googling the issue.

Is there a way of increasing the size of the tab text and icons? I'm surprised how poor the Chrome UI is given the cash Google has for development.

As someone with bad eyesight, I sometimes find it easier to go into the Personalize menus in previous Windows versions, and change the "icon" font size to 12/13 and make it bold, from the default which I believe is 8. However as I'm sure many know by now Win8 has removed such options. Is there any way I can fix this?

Good day.

I wish to know if there is a way to change the font size/style (bold, etc.) of the icon labels ONLY on the desktop screen.

I've tried the Control Panel method (Appearance & Personalization -> Display) that allows me to change the fonts for 'ICONS'. However, this option also changes the appearance of fonts in the directories/filenames, which is not what I want.

E.g. Labels on the desktop with size 12 and bold. Fonts in folders: size 9 and UNbolded (default style).

Anyone have a solution for this?

Hi all, I just installed WIn8.1 Prox64 and I'm facing the following issue. I want to be able to adjust the desktop icons' spacing (vertical and horizontal), desktop icons font size, etc. In Windows 7 this was achieved by going to Personalization/Wndow Color/Advanced Appearance Settings and then you'd have a drop down menu with many items to be able to adjust. In Windows 8.1 it seems that this list is much more limited or impossible. Am I missing something or otherwise is there a 3rd party tweaker for this? Thanks

Hi,

Recently my Benq 22" LCD went in for repair under warranty (broken back light was the problem, I am told). My dear old Mum lent me a spare monitor she had lying around so that I would not suffer terribly from internet withdrawal. When I got my monitor back, I noticed one or two issues in relation to font size:

The first was that on certain websites (the news one I have internet explorer defaulted to, as well as ' Yahoo' mail), certain text is 'overlaid' or 'superimposed' on other text. In other words on some parts of these sites one hyperlink sits 'on top of ' another, as if I have the font size set too big and so therefore there is not enough room on the page for all the hyperlinks to be displayed as they should be (in the ' page' menu, I have text size set to 'smaller' i.e the second smallest of the five available options). I also have 'zoom' set to 100%, if that is relevant). The second thing bugging me is that when I go to retrieve my email from ' Yahoo', the subject headings are way too big.

I tried googling a few fixes, and tried variously:

- setting the font size to 96 DPI

- going to Tools menu>internet options>accessibility, and checking/unchecking combinations of the three ' formatting'
options. Presently I have the first two options (' ignore colors specified on webpages', and ' ignore font styles specified on
webpages') unchecked, and t... Read more

It may be that switching between monitors has changed the display

I have a new HP 6200n.

My IE and Slim Browser font sizes aren't consistent....with either browser the first page I open looks fine, but the 2nd window I open has a much smaller and hard to read font. Both browsers are set to the largest font.

Firefox works fine. Thunderbird has a similar issue - the text in the message body is much too small and can't be adjusted. Tech support disabled the IE add-ons and changed the monitor resolution...it helped for a while but the problem continues. The DPI scale is also set to the largest font.

I've tried using a different monitor and the problem still exists. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi there everyone. I have a problem with my computer's formatting. For

example, my mouse's cursor size is extremely small and I have a deer that

occasionally makes it's way under my cursor. (From right to left) How do I get

rid of that?

The other problem (and more pressing!) Is that for some reason my font on Internet Explorer has become extremly small! The font is now around 8 pt or smaller!

What do I need to do to fix these problems?

Thanks!

A:Computer font and mouse size issues

You might want to try to see if there is some cursor software installed on your computer. To do that, you would go to the control panel, and then programs and features and see if a cursor software program is installed. You would want to uninstall that to get back to your normal cursor state. As far as being small, this could be the resolution. To change this go to:
1. Open Display Settings by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Display Settings.

2.Under Resolution, move the slider to the resolution you want, and then click Apply.

If you change your resolution numbers to smaller numbers the screen will get larger, and if you change the resolution to larger numbers the screen gets smaller looking.

If this does not fix your Internet explorer text being small issue, open internet explorer and on your keyboard press ctrl and 0 (zero) at the same time and this should refresh the text to the default size in internet explorer. Hope this has helped

Windows XP home SP2.

Several months ago I experienced an unusual problem with my computer in that all fonts had been changed to Marlett, a font that is non-readable, and all other fonts had been removed. I spent a lot of time making corrections to Windows settings and found some info on these boards but was not able to find a permanent solution.

One of the recommendations was to import fonts to the Windows Font folder, which I did via a thumb drive. This helps, and gives me fonts, but not permanently. In fact, after import the fonts show in the folder only until I close it, and if re-opened there is nothing to see, and the folder locks up requiring a task manager close. Every time it is necessary to shut down the computer the font resets to Marlett, so I have to re-import the fonts.

Recently, I began to run in to memory problems, with Windows repeatedly advising I was running dangerously low on memory. I spent a lot of time deleting non-essential files and moving others to an alternate drive, but memory usage continued to be a problem. I finally spent time finding where the memory was being used and, in looking at the fonts folder from the "my computer" area, found that the supposedly empty fonts folder has 3.9 gigs of material in it. However, when I open the fonts folder, it shows an empty folder.

I tried going through the "First Steps" series but was unable to due to memory shortage. I am at a complete loss on what to do now short... Read more

Windows 10.

I am having much fun grappling with my displays. I say grapple because I CANNOT see the text!

I have a laptop, with a display that has up to 2048x resolution and an external monitor that does 1920x. I have tried to keep both set the same resolution so the mouse will easily go back and fort.

If I bump one setting, others seem to change. Like after an update too!

I need a script, to set, then set again, and again, the
display settings,
the custom scaling level, and
the "change only text size".

Keeping the monitor placement geometry the same would be great for me too.

Oh for a cross reference on Outlook 2013 to the system setting. I keep manipulating the view settings there too.

Probably to get started I could use a "settings display" script.

Help, please

Other programs don't seem to be affected, ie when naming/renaming files or installing programs into custom locations font size is normal. I don't know if it is only system restore that has this problem but it's the only program i've come across that is suffering.

Hello, XP Pro general question. For a couple years I've had ComicSans as my chosen Font style. Not in any particular program...but rather every window, file & folder title possible(on this particular "Limited" User Screen). Problem: for some unknown reason, this font setting/choice recently reverted back to XP Pro's default font(Ariel?). I've looked high & low & can't recall how I originally accessed this setting. Microsoft's HELP say's "To change the font : 1. On the Options menu, click Font. 2. In the Font dialoge box, click the options you want." I guess I have to live with the frustration of "NO RESULTS FOUND" in Micrsoft's Help database when queried for "Options menu" or "Font dialoge box". But since their HELP "doesn't", I was hoping someone here could specifically-exactly direct me to this setting's location. The only "Options" I have under "Tools" is "Folder Options" which gives me no Font options. The ComicSans font I want reinstated, still exists in the "Font" folder in my Control Panel.
The only recent change I've made to my computer was to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7.0---the only other change I've noticed(& not appreciated) since this new IE7 was installed, was IE7's hiding/removal of my "History & Temporary Internet Files" from my "Local Settings". I don't t... Read more

Hi,

What size screen did you upgrade to, the bigger screen can make thing look different. Also, what resolution are you running at? If it is different than the last resolution that you had on your other monitor then everything will look different. For a rule the higher the resolution the smaller the icons, and the lower the resolution the the larger the icons, toolbars, etc.

Cheers!

This below was gleaned from the Outlook Express Help files.

To change the font, style, and size of text

You can change the way the text looks for all your messages or you can make changes to selected text within a message.

To change the text style for all messages

On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the Compose tab, click Font Settings.
To format text within individual messages

Select the text you want to format.
(To change the font for an entire message, on the Edit menu, click Select All.)

On the formatting toolbar, click the buttons for the options you want.
Notes

If you have trouble formatting, make sure HTML formatting is turned on by clicking the Format menu in a new message window and then clicking Rich Text (HTML). A black dot appears by the command when it is selected.
When you use HTML formatting and the recipient's e-mail or news program does not read HTML, the message appears as plain text with an HTML file attached. The recipient can view the attached file by opening it in any Web browser.

Also, it's probably my ISP connection, but it's crap at connecting to hotmail. I can get my ISP email easy, but Outlook does not like connecting to hotmail I ALWAYS get timeout errors.

Can you help?

Cheers,
Dan.

Is there a way to set just the font size without windows trying to enlarge everything? In windows xp selecting a bigger font size only affected window's fonts and icons. In windows 7 selecting a bigger font size zooms everything, including other applications like open office and opera that cannot handle it and look blurry. Am i the only one with this problem?

It depends on the application and how they want to react to DPI increases.
There may be options available in the applications to configure that.

I have AOL 9.0 and Windows XP on an HP PC. I can send E-Mails and they print out as I specified (Arial 12pt.). However, when I receive E-Mails from anyone, the type face is HUGE, and takes three times the space to print out. I called AOL Tech Support (India, naturally), and got a lot of useless advice, including reinstallation. Please show me how to configure so I can receive and send in the same font size (medium).

Thanks a million.

Are you talking about Windows Explorer, and not Internet Explorer? With I/E, there is no left/right side. If you want to change the font size, hold down the Control key while scrolling with the mouse wheel.

I'm fairly new to IE5. I thought I had it set up correctly and yesterday the font size got quite large while I was inputting data. Large enough to require the horizontal scroll bar for most everything. Example, just clicking my home page Google, the font size is 16 or 18 point and I usually use 10. The basic font like tool bars etc. have NOT changed. I'm sure this is simple to correct but the help menu doesn't list anything to fix it. Your expert solutions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Jim
