Some keys not working after VMware crash

Q: Some keys not working after VMware crash

I was running another OS in VMware and after a while everything froze so I was forced to restart my computer by manually pressing the restart button. After the restart some keys on my keyboard started to not work. At first it was only CTRL but now I cant use p,[,0,- and / either. Every once in a while, out of nowhere some of the keys become active for a short period of time. I tried with another keyboard and have the same results...so it is not a keyboard malfunction.

The on-screen keyboard works, but being a programmer I use CTRL a lot.

Any suggestions what I should try? thanks.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Have you tried restoring to a previous good configuration? You don't say whether you are using a PC or a laptop, I assume a PC as you have changed keyboards; did you try plugging the keyboard into a different port? Have you been into Control Panel>Device Driver>Keyboard and checked whether you can Troubleshoot the keyboard interface or roll back the driver to a previous configuration or update the driver?

So I decided to dig out some old operating system install disks to play with on my PC. However, when the OS install requires a reboot, the VM breaks and gives endless C++ runtime errors indicating something in regards to "pure functions", no error number visible on screen. To stop the C++ errors from appearing I must go into Task Manager and end the VMware process. When relaunching the VMware program, the VM that was running during the crash is in-accessible and requires the "Take Ownership" command, but when clicking that option I just get another error. To solve this issue I can reboot my host PC, but the VMs just cause the issue all over again. This crash also occurs when connecting host drives to the VM, or removing the virtual CD drive and reconnecting it.

Hey Everyone

Started typing on my internal laptop keyboard today and reliased that mainly keys a b and n were not working.
So I decided to clean them by taking off the key and white holder, then used a cloth to clean all the dust etc.. both under the rubber button and around it. This still didn't work however, so I then decided to uninstall and reinstall the driver as well. However this didn't work either.

Its probably best to try and buy a new one off e-bay, but before I do this does anyone else have any suggestions?

Also interesting, a b and n seems to be a popular combination of keys for other toshiba laptops that don't seem to be working... (Using a USB keyboard atm to type which works fine)

Hello,Having a problem with my laptop keyboard where the hotkey function buttons have suddenly stopped working as they used to. Pressing any of the hot keys results in an f1-12 rather than the previous function of changing volume, toggling keyboard lights and changing brightness etc. This happened around the time of me installing some new drivers for an audio interface so may be related to that. Ive tried going into the BIOS and toggling the hotkey option on and off, and installing hp quick launch software but nothing has worked so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance - C. Any ideas please.

Many thanks.

A:Keys that have FN functions on them not working as normal keys

Check the Manual on the model's Support Downloads webpage for key combo to unlock: http://www.ehow.com/how_4968993_unlo...ey-laptop.html

Try updating or reinstalling the hotkeys driver from the model's Support Downloads webpage. Driver Install - Device Manager

While there look also for any downloadable fixes for these key functions or related.

It may also be disabled in msconfig>Startup. You can google the listings there to see what they're for. Normally you only need your AV checked and the rest are freeloaders, but some models require hotkey software to be running at startup if it provides anciliiary functions like backlighting, function toggling, etc.

Hi, Try the following. Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Regards, DP-K

Hey, all! So my volume keys are being strange-- the mute one is now always lit up, even if the volume is up. And when I try to increase volume, unless I hold the volume + key continuously, it mutes the volume rather than increasing. I used to be able to just tap the volume +  key and it would increase marginally. The same thing happens with volume-. I don't know if this makes sense, but it's a problem that suddenly popped up and I'm not sure why! Thanks

Virtual machine OS is Windows XP Pro. Vmware version is 6.

I create a New Folder from virtual machines Windows explorer in a real shared folder on another PC. Then wish to rename it to all lowercase like new folder.

But when I rename New Folder to a different name like New Folder1 and then rename to new folder (all lowercase), IT WORKS!

This problem is important because I create case sensitive scripts and must save on a file server.

Have you got any useful SOLUTION for this problem?

I've a broadband link of MTNL with D-Link DSL 502T modem, and a m/c with Windows XP as primary OS and over it running VMWare server ver 1. I''ve loaded Ubuntu 10 server over VMWare and made it as the DNS / Web Server, I've got domain name registered against a static IP.

Now the problem I'm facing is that whenever I try to open the web-page of my web-server, I receive Modem Configuration page instead of web page I loaded on the server, although my Apache 2 server is running fine.

Can some one help me tell how to configure so that it directly fetches the web pages loaded in the web server instead of modem configuration page.

Thanks and regards

I don't need help, I just wanted to post my solution.
I recently setup the latest version of Vmware player on Ubuntu 13.04 and found myself unable to download the tools for it. error try again later or something along those lines. I searched about online for answers but google only presented 1 relevant topic and it didn't have a solution. Anyways I've discovered how to get around this, it's quite obvious really, I feel dumb for taking so long to figure it out. Lauch VMware player as root, then the tools will download successfully. Hopefully this will save someone a world of heart-ache.

I want to connect several VM's mainly Cisco router to same network adapter (vmnet1 host-only network adapter) and want to pass multiple VLAN's as Tagged. I am able to achieve this requirement through bridged network adapter but unable to do so through host-only
adapter. I am using Windows 7 as main OS and VMware Workstation 11.
I have gone through several tech forums but unable to find answer for it. Though in multiple forums one statement was common that Windows will strip the VLAN information when packet received/transmits through network adapter.
I would really appreciate if anyone can help me with this.

I have been using VMware 11 which I am new too, And also playing with a new windows 10 install.
I have installed a genuine win 7 copy which was activated and then installed win 10 from inside win 7 and this also activated without problem. So left with a working activated copy of windows 10

After a few days I thought I would do a fresh install from a ISO and wipe the disk. This worked fine as expected and is still activated and running fine.

I then thought with all my playing with the disk I would do a FULL clone of this clean install so it would be a good starting point and a backup just in case something happened to the other VM and snapshots. I then tried to run this clone but now windows stays this clone is not activated. No matter what I do.

I then went back to the original VM and this still is activated fine.

I thought a cloned VM computer would not trigger the activation process if it was used on the same Host pc with the same settings.

Anyone have any ideas ??

I'm running VMWare 7 on a Windows 7 64-bit host and trying to get an XP Pro SP3 VM to connect to my network. I have no success with either Bridged or NAT.

-VMWare NAT Service is running on the host
-Assigning a static IP to the VM from my router does not help
-Disabling Windows Firewall on the host and guest does not help
-VMWare Bridging is enabled on my host's Ethernet adapter
-Antivirus monitoring is disabled on the XP guest

This all worked just fine when I used Vista x64 and VMWare 6.5. By the way, I have created a brand new VM with the W7/VMW7 combination and it acts just the same way.

My Windows 98 VM works with NAT.

Been at this for hours on end and no threads I've read have helped. Perhaps there is a registry mod I need to do? I read one user that fixed his problem using CCleaner's registry cleaner, but there's no way I'm running a reg cleaner. I've read enough on this forum to know better

Thanks in advance for the help

About a week ago I got a popup from Norton Internet Security that said "We've detected an intrusion attempt from such and such IP address with the DeepThroat Trojan. This attack was blocked."

I didn't like the way that sounded so I did research on that trojan, but from what I read on the internet it didn't sound like I had it.

I ran scans with:
Norton Anti-Virus
Panda ActiveScan

And all came up clean.

Then some people said AVG was a good anti-virus, so I downloaded that, ran it, it came up clean, and then I deleted it because it slowed my computer down like crazy (constant 100% CPU usage, etc.)

Ever since then, I've been getting weird warnings and weird random program crashes.

I downloaded Firefox 3 the other day and it crashes a LOT. Some of the other programs I run have been randomly crashing, too (stock trading and charting programs).

Hi all

To install W8 developer edition (current version) as a VM with vmware workstation you have to download / upgrade to version 8. Version 7.1X and earlier won't work. Vmware player (current version) gives same problem as vmware workstation 7.1x.

When you install choose W7 as the OS (there isn't a W8 option yet not surprisingly) and select I will install the OS later.

Then select the DVD device in the vm serttings as a virtual ISO (you don't need to burn a physical DVD) and boot from the device.

Then it will install more or less as W7.

Ignore any prompt for a product key if it appears. I wasn't asked for one but some people seem to get a request for a product key when attempting to install W8 as a virtual machine.

You can download a free trial version for 30 days from the vmware site. ( it may be that eventually version 7.1x will work or the next upgrade of W8 will work so unless you want to upgrade to version 8 of vmware workstation I'd start with downloading the trial).

Then it installs OK

I don't have enough privileges yet to upload screenshot but it installs fine.

I've also posted a suggestion on how to remove / disable the metro gui for those that want a more "classical" Windows look - you can see the post in the W7 Forum until I can get approval to post in the relevant section on this Forum on customising W8

NOW that Dell KNOWS about the above keys not working correctly... does anyone know if they have found a solution yet?? My warranty expires in Nov and I've been dealing with this (real pain in the ***) problem for a good 2-3 months now and my hubby wants me to buy a new laptop (certainly NOT another DELL after THIS problem) instead of trying to fix this Inspiron 11, model # 3147. Well... it's only 10 months old and still under warranty. I REFUSE to keep wasting my money on laptops and want to have this one repaired under warranty.
I ALSO noticed in the last few months, there is an exorbitant amount of heat coming mostly from the left underside bottom, so much so... that I have to use a lap desk in order to keep my lap from burning up. This might be contributing to the problems of the keyboard. I just want to be able to use it. My only fear is... I get it repaired and then it fails again for the same reason in a few months.... then what???

Some of the keys of my HP Pavilion 15 p033cl (Windows 8.1) currently aren't working. These keys include the 5, N, M and Y for example. It has happened before and I think I was able to fix it by hitting fn + num lock or fn + caps lock or something, but I can't remember what the exact combination of keys was. I tried hitting fn + some f key (f1 - f12) and it sometimes switches to some weird mode were the laptop thinks I'm always pressing CTRL. When I pressed fn + f12 to go back to the mode where the keys somewhat worked, the keys that didn't work on my laptop keyboard also stopped working on my USB keyboard. I was able to fix my USB keyboard by going into the BIOS and resto... Hey @mohanj2787, Welcome to the HP Forums! I read your post and wanted to reach out to help you! In your post, you had said that currently your HP 15-ac149tx Notebook will not install the AMD driver.  Here is a link to your product page. You system came with Intel 5500 HD graphics not AMD. So you need to uninstall the AMD from your Device Manager.  You could try: In the Device Manager, click the arrow next to Display Adapters to expand that category. Right-click on Graphics and select Update Driver Software. Choose the option to Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software. The Notebook should find and automatically install the updated driver. After the installation is complete, restart your Notebook. You could try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix any updates that have not come through for Windows. This is a download that will run a check on your system and usually repair it. Please restart the Notebook twice to make sure all update have been completed!  Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! I have a Flex 3-1580 Laptop (Lenovo), 80R4Windows 10 (64-bit) Several keys do not workSpace, backspace, the center enter key, and the forward slash. Any ideas why this would be happening?I've plugged in a USB keyboard, and all the keys on it worked. I got this laptop new in the Spring.

Hi @seasonicm,  Welcome to the HP Forums! I see your keyboard is not working correctly on your HP Pavilion dv6-7044tx Notebook.  Here is a link of some things to try. Start under the set keyboard language settings. Most times just changing it and then changing it backs fixes it. You could  try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix any updates that have not come through for Windows.  Please restart the Notebook twice to make sure all update have been completed! Please let me know how this goes. If you wish to say Thanks for my effort to help, click the Thumbs up to give me a Kudos. Thanks.

*NEW KEYBOARD*. Probably a few drivers weren't installed. Check my last thread if you don't know what I'm talking about. Anyway.
The letter "D" isn't working properly. You gotta click it a few times to work. How do I fix this? This is a "hama" keyboard.

A:Some keys not working

generic keyboards don't need drivers. If some keys don't work well in a new keyboard, it's 100% likely it is a faulty keyboard.

I can't type the keys that aren't working because they don't work. but they are the question mark and the letter after Y.

I removed one of the keys to see if there was some obstruction there. There wasn't. Then the keys worked again - BOTH of them worked. Then, both of them again stopped working. This doesn't sound like a physical problem. Any solution at all out there.... I have a Toshiba Satellite 64 bit with win7

The F8 key on my keyboard is not working.
Ctrl + F8 works and Alt + F8 works.
F10 is not working properly, two presses give one response.
F11 and F12 sometimes work and sometimes not.
Since I have tried another keyboard and the problem is the same,
so this should not be a hardware problem.
The system is Windows 7.
I have tried restoring it to a few days before, but that didn't help.
I looked around, closed all other applications,
trying to find any software that might have a hot key.
But if it is a hot key conflict, then it shouldn't affect F10, F11 and F12.
Please help!
