Q: Your advice: X1 Extreme vs P1, external 4k monitor etc.

Dear all, I'm new to this forum and would appreciate your advice on the following. I've always had ThinkPads. I recently got a Macbook Pro 15" 2017 for work and it's super smooth in daily operation when connected to an external 4k monitor. I'm keen to replicate the smoothness as I hate the visual lag of the cursor etc. in my older T460s when connecting it to the 4k monitor. I like the X1 Extreme because it has longer battery life than the P1. However, I'm concerned that the X1 Extreme's graphics card won't be up to the job of a smooth display on a 4k external monitor. Am I right in saying that the X1 Extreme's GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is NOT up to the job of running on a 4k external monitor smoothly in everyday operation? If yes, will it be solved by the GTX 1650 Max-Q that's in the X1 Extreme Gen 2?If I'm wrong and the graphics cards above are actually fine, please help me understand what I need to make sure I order so that the laptop runs on a 4k external monitor smoothly. I cannot stand the lag in ordinary operation.BestNamir

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I should have added:The 4k monitor that I will be connecting my new Thinkpad to is the BenQ PD3200U.

Wondering if anyone has come across this problem before. I have a brand-new X1 Extreme (bought in March) and a 4-year-old Dell 27" 4K monitor. In the last few days, I've had really low fps when using the monitor, while the built-in display works fine. This is all at the Windows desktop, ie not games or anything that should be super-demanding. Some more details:Laptop is running Windows 10 Pro 1903, fully updated, and there are no problems in Device ManagerThe resolution is 4K, 60Hz refresh rate, connected to a Thunderbolt port via a DisplayPort-USBC cableI had the same problem when I tried connecting with HDMI (which only gets me a nominal 30Hz refresh rate because the monitor only supports an older HDMI spec, but the actual fps I get is way less than that ? maybe 10-15fps)Switching between TBolt ports doesn't helpSwitching to a different monitor also doesn't help, suggesting the problem is with Windows and/or the laptopInterestingly, if I duplicate the display on both laptop and monitor, then the problem goes away. It comes back when I set Windows to display on only the monitor. The monitor was mostly working fine before this. I say mostly, because it's had problems for years relating to waking up from sleep; I'll often have to unplug it from the wall and plug it back in again for Windows to see it. But once it was running, it was okay.

So, first of all my idea was to connect two external monitors to my brand new Lenovo X1 Extreme gen 2 notebook. I connected one monitor via HDMI port and this one is working perfectly. For the other monitor I bought USB-C to HDMI adapter (this one https://www.links.hr/content/images/thumbs/004/0043398_adapter-delock-usb-type-c-m-na-hdmi-z-alt-nac...) and I'm not getting any video signal to my second monitor. At first, I thought that maybe there is an issuse with the adapter but I tried it on my desktop PC and it's working just fine. Furthermore, I searched like 5 hours for every post on Google that includes problems with the USB-C display. The things that I already did for solving this issuse are: 1) Chagning the thunderbolt security in BIOS2) Changing Secure boot in BIOS3) Changing from Hybrid to Discrete Graphics in BIOS4) Checking Thunderbolt software for connected device (no devices connected)But none of them solved my issue. So, is there anyone who maybe know what is the problem or this is the issue with the motherboard and I have to send to maintenance servis?P.S. USB-C as input is working fine.

Is there a special settings I **bleep** missing somewhere?  Please advise.

My laptop is a Compaq Presario F504EA. I have had an external 19" LCD Monitor running sometimes in parallel and sometimes independantly with the laptop. It has its own Power supply, and is only connected to the laptop through a VGA cable.

I was wondering if this could cause the laptop to extremely overheat. With this, the laptop would be un touchable on the bottom side due to extreme heat.

I had also recently upgraded my ram from 1 to 2GB. Would this of had an effect on the heat aswell ?

It is currently in repair due to my keyboard being intermittent along with my wireless; i believe the heat as melted joints or something on the motherboard.

Thanks
Oliver

A:External Monitor, extreme heat issue

when was the last time you spray dusted the laptop, that should help the heat issue. but adding more ram should not cause any more than normal heat, the extra monitor might cause more heat cause of the extra power going through the video card, but it should not make it untouchable.

i would try to spray dust the vents and also check to make sure all the fans are working.

I'm debating on what type of external monitor to get for my X1E, and I'm leaning heavily towards a 34" QHD monitor, but one question I have is how well can the 1050-ti handle the monitor? Mostly productivity but some gaming,  Older games like Fallout 4, but also some newer ones like Outer Worlds.  To be honest, I'm not sure how well Outer Worlds will play on the X1E, never mind a large monitor. I'm currently running with a FHD monitor and I'm looking for something that will give me more screen real estate

I have a thinkpad X1 type 20MF and when I used my external monitor it's so slow that I have the feeling that my entire brain is slowed down.I'm up to date according to Lenovo Vantage. I'm using it at work. I do not play games on it. I observe the slow refresh rate problem with only the file explorer window, or firefox. I tried with both a Full HD and 4K resolution. It's the same.I'm using the dock (USB-C dock). If I connect the external display without the dock I still face the issue. EDIT: I've observed that the issue is happening only if I display on external screen only. If I duplicate the content on both screens, or if I extend the desktop to the screen 2 it's fine. I'm really considering returning it. Moderator edit: Added detail to Subject.  Vantage screenshot

Also, if I do reset while the monitor is still connected, it's working ok (but this is not a good solution for me as I want to keep the work evniornment).I tried playing with Display settings but nothing seems to help, maybe the community can please help me?

Hi, I just received my X1 Extreme Gen 2, configured with top specs. My configuration is for home-office, so the first thing I do is connect an external monitor and wireless keyboard+mouse. I also work most of the time on the large monitor, with the laptop lid closed. What I did:. Run all updates available for Windows 10 Pro and via Lenovo Vantage (so everyhting is up to date).. Connect Dell monitor via HDMI. Works perfectly when laptop lid is open.. Configured laptop so when lid is closed, it does nothing.. Lapop power management is configured for "performance". What happens:As soon as I close the laptop lid, whatever graphics I have running on the external monitor (youtube video, browsers, etc...), even the mouse movement, becomes very choppy or lagging. When I reopen the laptop lid, the issue goes away. Any idea how to solve this problem? Thanks!

A:X1 Extreme Gen2: External monitor choppy "only" when laptop lid is closed

SOLUTION: it turns out that the "external PnP monitor" driver needs to be updated separately. While laptop lid is open and external monitor is connected, go to display settings, select the external display, and find your way to update the driver. In the end, Windows will automatically find your specific monitor's driver, and replace the "generic" one. After this update, the external monitor worked perfectly with laptop lid closed. Hope it helps.

I have a Thinkpad X1 Extreme (20MF000CUS) connected to two external 4K monitors via Lenovo Thunderbolt Workstation Dock (40AN0230US). Windows 10 desktop extends to all 3 displays.Everything works really well except for a major annoyance: normally I have a bunch of apps/windows I leave open on all 3 monitors. Whenever I put the laptop to sleep and I then resume it later on, all app/windows I left open are automatically resized, moved and stacked up on the primary (laptop) display. Is this by design? Anyway to prevent this behaviour?I noticed that the laptop display is handled by the Intel graphic card while the two external displays are handled by the nVidia graphic card. Could this be the reason?

Actually, I would try the built in sound module (card) first before buying any add on sound unit. You will be surprised at the improvement in internal sound modules are compared to what they used to be.

Hi, new to the forum, hello everyone.

ok, i just bought a cpu which have a spec like this
Gigabyte S series GA-MA69GM-S2H
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+
2gb kington ram
(i think) coolermaster average casing.

The temperature when the com is idle or doing some surfing is about 40 to 50+
which is fine, but the problem starts when i open programs like games.. The temperature then will shoot up to about 100 degree and then shut down.. It originally have a fan as an exhuast at the back, the psu fan and the stock heat sink and stock heat sink fan.

I thought more fans would lower down the temperature of the cpu so i went to drill holes on the side window, i add a blowing in fan slightly below the cpu, a blowing in fan from in front and change the fan blowing out to a stronger fan(old one was 1000rpm, i changed 1500rpm) and thinking it will work, i open the game and guess wat.. the temperature didn't even have a noticable change in the speed where by it gain its temperature.. I didn't change the heatsink and heat sink fan(3200rpm).

Can anyone advice me on wat is the problem here?

Many many thanks in advance..

A:Need help or advice with extreme overheating

Case fans rarely help. There are many studies that show only 1 to 3 degrees difference in the temperature at the CPU.
Your problem likely relates to either too much or too little thermal paste, combined with a lousy stock CPU fan. I would immediately replace it with a Zalman or better CPU fan, being careful of the huge ones. Many will not fit in cases not designed for them. Replace the heat sink and the fan by getting a combo unit. Then remember that you need just barely enough thermal paste to ensure full contact between the heatsink and the CPU. More than the minimum can actually have the effect of an insulator.
Your Athlon 64 X2 4600+ runs very hot normally, so extra precautions are in order.
You might also want to purchase a thermal temperature gun to double-check the temperature reading devices on your computer. Of course the shutdown tells you the problem is severe.

Dear All, I recently went to plug in a second screen to my X1 Extreme Gen 1, and discovered my HDMI port was not working, a quick trip to my device manager showed I had a code 43 error.   I ran the system dynaostic utility and got the below result   I then went on the Lenevo website ran a system scan, and it flaged that I needed an updated driver, I installed the driver after rebooting still had the same issue. I then went to NVIDA and downloaded the most recent driver, uninstalled the driver from Lenevo. This time I had a blue screen of death, and the laptop would not start, booting into system repair and restoring to a system restore point i had set before starting this process. At this point I am not sure of the next step would normally have looked at the hardware and devices troubleshooter but that seems to have been removed in windows 10. At this point I am at end, but was wondering if there are any solutions I have missed, or is it likly a hardware issue? I am currently based in Jordan, and although I am covered by world wide warrently am concerned that may lose my laptop for weeks if I look for it to go for servicing. BestThomas

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

I just started having issues AGAIN with my X1 Extreme and Thunderbolt dock (40AN workstation model).  I had issues in the past with a first gen Thunderbolt dock that stopped working.  I had to switch to the 40AN with 230w+65w connections and it has run fine until this past week.  I have an 34" Ultrawide Samsung CF791.   The issue is the screen goes black and shows disconnected in the middle of working.  It also now does not come up when i start up the system. Cycling the dock cable restores the connectivity.   I've updated bios and updates to the system yesterday.  Not aware of any new dock drivers.  It's a shame this laptop & dock have been plagued with issues since I got it.  I came from W540, W541, and T580 series systems without issues.  This model seems awesome but runs like a lemon. Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

Word coming back from people already there or recently returned is of laptop shutdowns (heat related) and sometimes the odd fried processor.

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

Hi,Just bought a X1 extreme and got 2 serious issues that prevent me from working, -First, it seems impossible to plug a mic on the mixed connector. When I do that, realtek app see it as a speaker (or do not see it at all), and so I'm stuck with the utterly bad microphone embedded with the laptop. It is a microphone with no drivers, always used it on other computers just by pluging it and that's all.The only thread I found on that subject is this one https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/x1-headphone-mic-jack-NOT-WORKING/m-p/508115 (which does not answer to my issue) -My second issue is with the active pen 2 from lenovo. It seems to work well with windows bloc note and sketch app but on photoshop the active pen 2 levels of pressure once every 4 or 5 strokes is no more detected and so this stroke appears much wider than the others. I would love to know if there is drivers that will come or workaround because right now I can't use my laptop profesionnaly. Thanks.

My understanding when I purchased this monitor and computer setup was that I could place my closed computer in a vertical stand, connected to power and usb-c to the monitor, and use the monitor as a hub to run a few other peripherals. At most, this is a wireless mouse and keyboard (logi), a set of powered desktop speakers, and in some cases a printer. Essentially, I thought I had a dock and monitor all in one.  I seem to have issues at start up, and intermittent freezing/latency issues during usage. At startup, if the monitor has been left on it has issues connecting the video. In other words, my peripherals will work, but even with the laptop open sometimes I can't extend my monitor. I have the proper power settings (i believe) to close my laptop and continue to run. This works on one of my monitors but not on the other. Depending on which monitor I'm plugging into, I get different results as to whether the video works and how i get it to work. Once working, it functions well but there are freezing issues that I don't think are a function of the computer.  Am I asking too much of the P27H monitor? Should i not have considered this a docking station? Any settings I should double check/procedures to follow to m... Read more

I am looking into the X1 Extreme and was wondering if it's possibile to  connect 2 4K monitors to one Type-C connector. X1 Extreme Type-C ==> Monitor #1 (DP Out) ==> Monitor # 2 The P27h Monitor seems to be able to do so, but I want to be sure that the X1 Extrement will extend to Monitor #1 and extend again to monitor #2 (and not mirror #1 to #2) Also, if this is possible, will the X1 Extreme get it power from the Type-C and will the monitors USB port be functional ?

I see the X1 Extreme Gen 1 user guide does not list 5k2k @ 60 Hz the maximum supported resolution. Meanwhile the X1 Carbon 6th gen (which came out the same year as the X1 extreme) user guide mentions that it supports "Up to 5120 x 2280 pixels / 60 Hz, with an external display connected to one of the two USB-C connectors (Thunderbolt 3 compatible)" on page 31. Wondering if the X1 Extreme Gen 1 can also support it? If not by one interface/wire? How about two interfaces/wires? Is this a tested configuration?  Thanks

I just got my X1 Extreme, I was pretty excited, I've spent $3k on it, but for my suprise the monitor has its flaws (see pictures). First I've noticed that there was a bubble underneath the screen in my upper right corner, which I am completely sure is an assembly error. But then, when I switched to a dark wallpaper I've noticed white shadows on my right screen ender and in the upper left edge, which really dissapoints me, mainly that I've been waiting a long time to get this machine. PLEASE HELP ME!! What should I do, is there any quick fix, or do I really need to send it back for guarantee?  bubble on top right corner under the screenwhite shadowsbig white shadow

Hi jorgeTesla, It's kind of hardware problem. I'm afraid it couldn't be fixed by any quick & dirty way. Better contact after sales or warranty service ASAP and claim for DOA/RMA.

Hi Everyone,

I am currently providing remote support using TightVNC to a variety of locations. Increasingly I am noticing that the support that I am providing is to individuals with multiple monitor configurations. In almost all cases where more than one monitor is involved I find myself having to do a lot of scrolling inside the TightVNC program window (and TightVNC is not dissimilar to other remote support programs, such as RealVNC and TeamViewer in this regard).

I am considering purchasing an Extreme Definition monitor in the hopes of eliminating the program scrolling that I am experiencing. My first choice is the Dell UltraSharp U2713HM - LED monitor - 27". This specific monitor has a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1440.

I would not like to spend a significant sum of money on an extreme definition monitor only to find that it doesn't solve my specific challenge. For example the remote session may be too hard to read on the screen due to text being very small.

If anybody has any experience with this kind of monitor, and specifically with providing remote support whilst using one of these can you please share.

All comments & opinions are welcome.

Kind Regards,

Davo

A:Considering an Extreme Res Monitor to improve remote desktop support

Would it solve your issue? Might if the dual monitors you are viewing over VNC are not wider then 2560px. You would need dual monitors yourself to fully solve the issue of scrolling. As for the text size...well that will depend on your eye sight and your personal preferences. But yes, the text will be smaller is most cases.
