Preferred Solution: Explorer Crashes/Restarts when i click on any folder

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

Hello,
I am trying to run a few different repairs but they all require me to right click and then run as admin. My problem is that if I right click any Icon or desktop anything explorer crashes and restarts. I can not find any way to give myself admin access. I am the admin of the computer and logged in under my account but it does not matter what account I log in under it always crashes. Is there any other way to run the CMD sfc /scannow?
Thanks

A:Problem- Right click on anything and explorer crashes and restarts

Hello Dave84 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You can start up the System File Checker tool at the Start>Run command line. (refer to image attached)

That won't require any right clicking on anything. You could even add the Takeownership option to the right click menu but will need to first repair the present Windows installation since this sounds like one or more system files are corrupted.

The other thought on this is a possible malware infection leaving you with corrupted files like the explorer.exe sheil file used by Windows Explorer as well as the Computer desktop icon for browsing drives.

Hello!

About since I installed jdownloader this afternoon (and afterwards removed "search protect" with AdwCleaner and Malwarebyte Anti-Malware), my Windows explorer regularly freezes.
It does so whenever I do a right-click on any folder or disk or on the free space inside a folder or disk.
It also crashes whenever I open folder, which I have not recently opened or to which I added a big file (bigger than about 1 MB) recently. I could open some folders since this error came up but after adding a file to them, this is not possible anymore. Windows explorer being able to open some folders is probably due to it cashing/indexing some information.
I can read everything using cmd (cd & dir) and execute files directly though.

In safe mode Windows explorer works fine.

What I did so far:
- Following this guide (Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers) I removed all the handlers in the registry in HKCR\AllFileSystemObjects\shellex\contextmenuhandlers, HKCR\Folder\shellex\contextmenuhandlers and HKCR\Directory\shellex\contextmenuhandlers. Deletion of one handle in HKCR\Directory\shellex\contextmenuhandlers called "WorkFolders" only produces an error. I therefore could not delete this one. It did not help. Afterwards I recovered the registry keys.
- I used system recovery to switch back to a state from the day before yesterday.
- I tried disabling all the files in auto-start using the task-manager with no improvement.
- I ran &... Read more

A:Windows Explorer crashes on right click and opening folder

Windows Explorer is one of the most important program in Windows. When you open it, it does lots of things in the background such as updating the registry, updating the start menu etc...
Most of the problems are caused by Shell Extensions and I know you did some registry tweaks. However, before you go on, you need to run from the elevated command prompt:
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthsfc /scannow <== Might have to run multiple times until you get the message: Windows did not find any integrity violation. Then use this link: Right Click Menu Lag on my pc

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

A:HELP:Explorer restarts when you right click and much much more!

Right-clicking cause Explorer to crash!
This behavior is common with systems that have the DivX Video Compression software loaded when installing SP2. Currently, older DivX software is not compatible with SP2.

Update (9/8/2004): DivX 5.2.1, has been released. The version is compatible with Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and can be downloaded from the DivX site!
=========================
Work-around if you don't want to install DivX 5.2.1 or have no time to download it:

Click Start>> Run. Type in: regedit

Navigate to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\EncodeDivXExt

Delete the EncodeDivXExt key

Hi,

I have been using my computer all day without any issue. I just did a full backup of my computer onto an external drive (as I do most days) and when it finished, I then went to copy and paste a file on my computer. As soon as I right-click anything on the computer I get Windows explorer has stopped working and it restarts. I tried restarting the computer, same thing. I tried restarting with last good configuration, same thing. I tried starting in safe mode and it doesn't happen. I then restarted into normal mode and it still happens. I am quite sure this is not a virus as I haven't done anything likely to have caused that all day and there are no other symptoms. I have not installed anything new - software or hardware. I think it is a case of a file becoming corrupted. I hope someone can guide me through the best options to try and fix this. I really really really don't want to do a complete reinstall of windows. I would rather not do a system restore either as I did one once before with Windows 7 and it took hours and I have read other people having issues with that and with it hanging.

I am wondering about whether to do a scannow system file check?

PLEASE NOTE THIS HAS BEEN RE-EDITED A FEW TIMES

Edit: I have searched online that some people have related this to context menu handlers .... please note that this does not happen if I right click the empty desktop, or an icon on the desktop, or within a folder directory. But if I right click any file or f... Read more

The good news is that I seem to have resolved this myself. I checked Event viewer and found that Sugarsync was crashing. I don't need Sugarsync any more so I uninstalled it and now things work again. The bad news is that Sugarsync is also on my husband's computer and he does need it, however to date it is not causing an issue. Hi this just started happening today. I'm not sure what happened to trigger it. I have run virus scan and it didn't found any infected files.

Explorer.exe will load when my machine starts up. About every 5-10 seconds, it will close, meaning my desktop blinks off. Another 10 seconds later (or around that) explorer.exe will start again and my desktop will come back.

Eventually, it stops trying to load and the desktop stays off. I can go to task manager and run explorer.exe to repeat the process of having explorer.exe run, stop, run, etc.

I don't receive any error messages when this happens.

This machine has the latest Microsoft updates incl service pack 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

My explorer.exe constantly crashes and restarts; however, when I go into safe mode it works perfectly which means it is a driver problem. So I began to use the app, DriverView, to look at all the drivers I have and sure enough I find 3 very suspicious files that are most likely the cause to my problem. They looked suspicious because their file type was listed as unknown and their description was blank.the three files were:dump_dumpata.sysdump_dumpfve.sysdump_msahci.sysThey are said to be located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers but when I looked there i couldn't find them. I tried scanning for viruses in normal and safe mode using AVG but I found nothing. I then uninstalled AVG and installed Avira. I also scanned in normal and safe mode using Avira but I still found nothing. The virus blockers i used also were updated. For some reason I just can't findi them. I was logged in under my limited account and my anti-virus detected the .wmf but it could not take action, I believe due to the fact I use system restore. I finally was able to delete the .wmf after which I ran several different scans and could not detect anything except Microsoft (R) HTML Application host had been altered (24,576 bytes to 24,064 bytes), so I replaced the file (note: explorer was already crashing before this point). Well, when I right click on a file, my explorer crashes and so does the Dr Postmortem Watson thing.
Also, on my friends computer, the windows firewall can't enable. Any suggestions?

A:Right click crashes explorer

Step one would be to read the five steps link in my signature below and post a hijackthis log on the appropriate board.
Once they certify you are clean ; the next step would be to boot to safe mode by tapping F8 once a second on bootup until you get an options menu and choose safe mode.
Login with user name Administrator (not your usuall name) and leave password blank if you have not protected it.
THen go to control panel / users and create a new account (different name and password ) with administrator group membership.
Restart your computer and login to the new account and let us know if it has the same problems.

Also , on the firewall not working go to start / run and type services.msc and hit enter
Locate windows firewall and make sure it is set to automatic startup and started.
If it will not start there; make sure RPC and WMI services are set to automatic.

I know exactly how frustrating your problem is.

On one of my computers running WinXP Pro with SP2 I had the same problem when right-clicking on any file or folder in Windows Explorer. I setup a new AMD Athlon 64 3400+ today and after installing numerous apps I ran into it again.

Since it only happens when I right-click I thought it must be related to the context menus. A quick Google search found an excellent freeware app named ShellExView 1.10.

Run it and it will show all your file extensions with info on each such as Type, Version, Product Name, Company, Filename, etc..

Click on the "Type" column header to sort it. Look at the items with "Context Menu" as their type. Odds are one of these is causing your problem.

Select all of the Context Menu items, then go to "File\Disable Selected Items."

Restart your computer and see if the problem is solved. If not I'm sorry I couldn't help. If it is solved you may want to enable the items one at a time until your problem reappears. Then just disable the problem item again and you are good to go.

Hi,
I've just starting having real trouble with Windows Explorer in Windows 8.  Whenever I right-click on anywhere in a local file, or right-click on a local drive, Explorer freezes. I cannot even create a new folder without Explorer crashing.  As
I can't right click anywhere, I can't take ownership of the folders to confirm that this isn't a permissions issue. I'm really at a dead end with this.
I have seen that people have had a problem with this in the past when right-clicking on items in the left-hand pane in Explorer, but this problem is much more widespread, as it is affecting every local folder. I followed the advice given in previous posts.
I downloaded ShellExView and disabled each item of the Context Menu type that was non-Windows in turn to see if that solved the problem. I then tried disabling all items that were non-Windows to see if that would work. Neither worked and I still have the problem.

A:Explorer crashes when right-click

The Windows Explorer behavior when you use mouse or keyboard should be the same. The issue you described can be caused by third party programs or Windows Explorer add-ons.

You may boot in Clean Boot Mode to troubleshoot

http://support.microsoft.com//kb/929135

If the issue occurs in Clean Boot Mode, you may use ShellExView.
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/shellexview.html

Run ShellExView, in the pane sort the entries with manufacturers. Disable all non-Microsoft *.dll files, and check the result. If the issue does not occur, one of the files can be the culprit. We could narrow down it one by one. Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hello,

After days of troubleshooting via trying resolution methods from various forums, I finally have to submit a help topic, because I am out of ideas short of re-installing windows.

explorer.exe crashes whenever I do one of the following items:
- Right click on desktop to see display properties; the right-click menu never comes up; explorer just crashes. (I can get to the display properties fine through control panel.)
- Open up Start/Programs and enter an application sub-menu. Explorer doesn't crash until the sub menu opens, sometimes instantly, sometimes in a few seconds.
- Hovering over an icon on my desktop. Explorer does not crash when hovering over shortcuts, only when I hover over a file sitting on the desktop.
- Trying to open My Computer. A window opens up and the flashlight appears momentarily, then explorer crashes, which also closes the window.
- Trying to browse files via Start/Run or through Task Manager. Explorer crashes after several seconds, regardless of which drive or directory I am browsing. There may be an additional pattern there too as the time it takes explorer to die varies, but I have yet to determine a pattern if there is one. For Start/Run, the window closes, for task manager, sometimes the window freezes when explorer crashes and restarts, and the task manager icon in the task bar never goes away until I pass over it with my mouse.
- Trying to open up administrative tools from the control panel. Other controal panel options ... Read more

Hello,

So for the past month or so, explorer.exe has been crashing continuously. It happens on several occasions...

-Most notable when I first boot up Windows 7, it crashes and restarts in an assiduous manner, for maybe 10-15 times until it stops suddenly and starts working again

-When accessing files which force explorer to open, e.g. when I open a document, open the 'My Downloads' folder, and such locations (the crashing and restarting scenario occurs in every situation)

I haven't found a solution as of yet. I even tried ending the process in Task Manager and running it again... with the result of it continuing to freeze and restart even after I run it form Task Manager, until as usual, it suddenly stops crashing and starts working again.

Is there any possible solution to this which doesn't involve any type of System Restore/OS wipe?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. PC is defragged, registry and junk files cleaned using CCleaner and Disk Cleanup, issue still persists. SpyBotS&D cannot detect any malware, and ESET NOD32 cannot detect any viruses or infections either.

A:explorer.exe crashes and restarts when certain actions are performed

This is usualy caused by a bad file filter installed in explorer. And you can usualy trace it down to what type by noticing what files are in the folders you are opening.

Unless this happens at the default "libraries" or "Computer" entries as well...

Can you shed any light on where it does and maybe does not crash?

Did you install anything (Codecs, Office programs etc) just before this started?

HI, I had no problems this morning, but after I put some videos from my camera onto my computer, and then tried to upload them to youtube, I couldn't do it. Internet Explorer kept closing and restarting everytime I tried to upload. So I went to firefox, same problem, then to chrome, same problem. Finally I decided to just go to the video on my computer and show it to someone, I went into the picture folder, and then Explorer closed and restarted. It happens all the time, where I can't even get to open a file. I ran the SFC and got a SFC detail sheet. I think some file is corrupted. Can someone help me? I am going to post the SFC details so someone can give me a starting point to work on this. Thanks

What could be causing this?

Hello,

i have not found any solution for this even though there seem to be several similar postings before, so here goes. All this happens on Win2k before and after installing SP4.

Whenever i open an explorer and right click on a file, it will terminate all open explorers as well as take down my launch bar (which will subsequently be rebuilt though). What i want to do is to delete a file, and it does not work with pressing delete either (same effect). But, as i said, the whole conext menu wont open. I am not really aware of newly installed programs, could be wrong on that one though. Couldnt find where to manipulate registry. Any input on this one very welcome.

Btw, i can right click on folders. Just not on files. wierd, isnt it? 8^)

Unlike the average hang this one will stay grayed out for about 5 to 10 seconds, my screen will go black for about half a second and than everything will be back to normal. I am thinking that this could be a virus but i have run a scan 2 times and nothing showed up. Other than the file explorer not working everything is fine. This is really weird since it only started yesterday and i have never had any issues like this in the 4 years that i have had my computer.

A:windows explorer crashes when I right click

I know exactly how frustrating your problem is.

On one of my computers running WinXP Pro with SP2 I had the same problem when right-clicking on any file or folder in Windows Explorer. I setup a new AMD Athlon 64 3400+ today and after installing numerous apps I ran into it again.

Since it only happens when I right-click I thought it must be related to the context menus. A quick Google search found an excellent freeware app named ShellExView 1.10.

Available here: http://www.soft32.com/index-2-2-3-15-4.html

Run it and it will show all your file extensions with info on each such as Type, Version, Product Name, Company, Filename, etc..

Click on the "Type" column header to sort it. Look at the items with "Context Menu" as their type. Odds are one of these is causing your problem.

Select all of the Context Menu items, then go to "File\Disable Selected Items."

Restart your computer and see if the problem is solved. If not I'm sorry I couldn't help. If it is solved you may want to enable the items one at a time until your problem reappears. Then just disable the problem item again and you are good to go.
