TMP files created, files missing Offline files issue?

Q: TMP files created, files missing Offline files issue?

Hi,
I've got a situation here whereby .TMP files are appearing in network directories, and the files are going missing. The size of the TMP file matches the original file.
I'm trying to narrow down the issue, because I think there may be two problems here.
1. Offline Files are enabled, to allow profile redirection. It seems that this is also by default, is allowing Clinet Side Caching when there are network issues. Does the original file (.doc for example) get renamed
as a HR234.TMP for example when the Slow link detection sees slow performance?
2. If the above TMP file is created when there are network issues, should this resolve itself (sync itself back to the network) when performance improves?
Currently we are in a situation where we have a department that have files missing from many network shares, all the missing files seemlingly replaced with a .TMP file, so do we have to go round to every machine in the department, and manually
sync them to resolve this?

Preferred Solution: TMP files created, files missing Offline files issue?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

After checking the Hotfixes and Security Updates included in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 in the

Documentation for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932), I found the following hotfix is available:

Temporary files do not synchronize correctly to a non-DFS share on a server from a client computer
that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi,
I already searched through alot of threads but could not find anyone having the exact same issue.
We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1 which is hosting a DFS Namespace.
A customer of us works with his notebook (Win 7 SP 1) and has enabled Offline Files for his personal folder
in the DFS path. The initial synchronisation seemed to work and no sync errors are reported in Sync Center.

Now the problem is, everytime he opens a document from his DFS path and saves it, a .tmp file gets
created there and doesnt disappear. Not even after reboot. As far as i know it happens with Word, Excel and PDF documents.

If I log on to the server and browse to his path, i cannot see those .tmp files, only he can see it.
If I try to delete those files from his notebook I get an error "File is no longer located in... Verify the itemīs location and try again".
What I have tried so far:
If Offline Files get disabled, those .tmp files disappear. On activating they are visible again.
Tried "Delete temporary files" from Sync Center -> Manage Offline Files -> Disk Usage. Nothing happened.
I tried to repair Office, didnīt help.
The only Group Policy Settings we have relating to Offline Files are "Synchronize all offline files before logging off"
and "Allow or Disallow use of the Offline Files Feature" which is enabled.

Would be nice if someone can get me into the right direction to fix this issue.

Hi,
I'm sitting with a big issue at a customer and ask for your help.
Environment:
- 3x Windows 2008 R2 file servers configured in DFS
- approx. 500x Windows 7 clients (Laptops)
- 3x network shares, Common1, Common2 and Homefolder.
- "Offline Files" and "Folder Redirection" enabled for entire user profile.
- Everything is controlled by GPOs and there are no login scripts.
Symptom:
Due to some faulty settings in the client GPO and the fact that the "Common" shares was set to allow Offline Caching of files and folders, the majority of clients now suffer from sync issues and conflicts.
Most of the conflicted files are located in the users home folder, but some users are also seeing the same issues with files located on the "Common" shares. The users themselfes are not allowed to enable Offline Files as this is disabled by GPOs.
The only folders that should be treated as Offline Files are the ones in the users home folder.
Solution:
A new set of GPOs have been created that correctly set up "Offline Files" and "Folder Redirection". These are linked to a test-OU and the computers and users applied to that OU are not suffering from the problems above.
Question:
When we move a client, the cache will be deleted and all non-sync'd work will be lost.
Today we manually look at every users sync center and try to resolve the conflicts before we move them to the new OU. This is extremely time consuming when... Read more

Symptoms

Last Saturday, I was surfing the net as usual. But then suddenly, my browser (IE 8) shutted itself down, twice.

After rebooting my machine, I realized my notepad files that I saved as UTF-8 encoding have become unreadable text or alien language text.

Later, I noticed the set of these 3 files on each of many of my folders :
1. DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.html
 DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.HTML   8KB
  5 downloads
2. DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.txt

3. an internet shortcut named DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION (I right clicked to see its properties. Its URL is http://kpai7ycr7jxqkilp.totortoweb.com/d07a )

Many of my files that have the following extensions are broken :

A few days ago, before I came to post here, I downloaded Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool and scanned my laptop. The result said something like, there are some files that have password protection. I myself don't know how to create a password to protect my file. So, who did that?

Another symptom is, sometimes my laptop freezes and when I reboot it, I got the blue screen.

Hello all,
I've deployed  Offline files through group policy and setted up slow link when connection speed is below 10Gbps, just everytime.
Folder si offline but when I add new file the file is synced to server within 10 or 20 minutes. I've checked last sync interval but it didn't change. It isn't same as time when file was uploaded to server. Last sync was eq. 16:00 but file was uploaded at
16:15.
Folder is still offline. How is it possible?
THank you.

My offline files seems to work offline all the time, even when it shows me being online. I sync most of my business files to my laptop for working at home at night.

When I edit a file from my Win 7 (pro, 64-bit) laptop, then go to edit it again, I get the version I had changed, but no one else does. This is causing huge difficulty, because my employees will start working in a sales forecast spreadsheet after I reconnect to the network and supposedly sync, but they don't get the latest version. Even doing a manual sync seems to make no difference.

It seems that if someone else edits something on the network share, it does update to my laptop, but when I update something, it doesn't transfer so that everyone else can use it?

Where should we begin looking?

A:Offline files doen't update files changed locally

It may help if you enable transparent caching which can be enabled through Group Policy. I'm not sure this is the same problem but it seems to apply to your problem.

Windows 7 introduces a new feature for Offline Files & Folders called “Transparent Caching”. With transparent caching, the first time a user opens a file in a shared folder, Windows 7 reads the file from the server and then stores it in a cache on the computer’s hard disk drive.

The second and subsequent times a user reads the same file, Windows 7 retrieves the cached file from disk instead of reading it from the server. To provide data integrity, Windows 7 always contacts the server to ensure the cached copy is up-to-date.

The cache is never accessed if the server is unavailable and updates to the file are always written directly to the server. Transparent Caching is not enabled by default and can be enabled through Group Policy at Computer configuration | Administrative Templates | Network | Offline Files | Enable Transparent Caching.

I don't think I'm imagining this...

When I have just created a new file, or downloaded it, or moved it from one folder to another, or renamed it, I have the impression that it doesn't show in Windows Explorer. It looks as if it's just not there. You can't find it by browsing, nor by searching. But if you try to create the file again (with the same name) you get an error saying you can't do that, because there is already a file here with the same name. I suppose the file shows up in Explorer some minutes or hours or days later. I have not researched exactly how long it takes. But this is extremely annoying.

Have you seen the same thing?

Is there a solution?

Does Microsoft know this problem exists? Can we expect a solution within the foreseeable future?

Thanks - Rowan

You need to ensure that Fast User Switching is disabled: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307853

Also, make sure you are enabling offline files on the computer that is accessing the network share, the one that does not have a copy of the files locally.

Interesting I jsut tested this issue with a windows xp pc with the stock IE 6 that comes with it and when I visit a webpage or a couple of webpages whatever the amount is, then I look in the temporary internet view files section I see alot of files created when going to a particular webpage. It also worked under my own vista sp1 IE8 succesfully.

But at my customers pc and another vista pc that I have in my room that doesnt have any windows updates installed and not even service pack 1 for vista is installed it, does not created temp files in the folder.

Hello,

since yesterday we have problems with computers where the offline files are enabled and the cache is encrypted.

Users cannot save files the message access is denied is coming up.

It's possible to create a file, which has then 0 bytes and when opening the file the same message is coming up.

If we do not encrypt the offline cache via GPO, everything runs normally again.

This setup worked now for several years without problems.
Any Patchday issue?

I had a home user come to the office and she was having trouble getting on our network. I turned off off-line files because she doesn't need to sync files to the office on this computer when she comes in anymore on that computer.

Come to find out she was storing all her personal files on the offline drive that we create for each individual here and set it up as offline so files are backed up here in the office.

I have told her to turn off her laptop and do nothing else on it until I look at it. Is there a way to get all those files back that went away when I turned off the offline files? I don't want to do anything until I am sure I make the best move knowing that once those deleted files are overwritten on the hard drive they may still be recoverable in some way.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to get these files back on her hard drive. Just to be clear they were all on the offline folder of a network drive. I turned off off-line files and they were never syncronized up to the server before I did it.
Thanks for your help.

I have the same problem with a Synology DS209+II and I suspect it has to do with Windows not being able to communicate properly with samba shares, even though the newest Firmware (DSM 3.0) explicitly allows you to activate "Support for Windows Offline Files".

I have looked through all the similar threads but still couldn't find a solution to this.  We have Windows 7 machines logging into a Windows 2008 AD networks. While on the network, our clients are set to use internal DNS set by DHCP. A few of our
folks have offline files setup on their home drives.  These users can successfully log onto their computers offline.  When they attempt to access their offline files however, they receive the message "The system has detected a possible attempt
to compromise security. Please ensure that you can contact the server that authenticated you" along with the option to provide their credentials. Entering their credentials fails of course. The work around for them is to disconnect from the wireless network
or disable the WLAN card. At that point they can access their offline files.  But as soon as they reboot, they receive the same message.  If they reboot with the WLAN card disabled, they will not receive this message and are able to access their
offline files.  Additionally these users are setup with VPN. If they enable VPN, the issue is corrected and they can again access their offline files.

We've attempted removing and rejoining to AD, removing their user profiles and completely rebuilding the laptop from scratch. It appears when the laptop is connected to a wireless network, it wants to contact our AD network. The articles below haven't offered
a solution.

I have been trying to encrypt a folder using PGP 9.0.6 and Cryptainer Secure It 3.1.7.

http://www.cypherix.com/

http://www.symantec.com/business/theme.jsp?themeid=pgp

What's weird is that the folder and the files within it will not encrypt and I don't know why? Further more the folder will actually be missing files. Can anybody explain to me? No, I am not setting the applications to erase files after completion.

PGP Conventional Encryption has worked finally. I tried all the obvious stuff first like closing all non-essential volumes (virtual disk that are created and encrypted by PGP), transferring the files to another drive, etc.

On a slightly separate issue. I did have some data corruption involving an older and separate group of files. However I deemed that to a hardware failure or a OS/Software failure. Figured it might provide valid insight.

Update: Now my PGP conventional encryption, non .exe file generation worked. I don't understand why it wouldn't work? Going to rename the source folder and try again. MY encrypted .exe file generation with PGP should work.

I tried again. PGP conventional encryption and PGP Zip both encrypted fine. I tried creating a PGP .exe file and again it failed and files are missing; why?

I've done a full virus scan and spyware scan. No known threats detected that would cause this. I've done two system wipes in the past months. I've also removed, reinstalled, and or repaired the installation of both a... Read more

I've had this computer (HP Pavilion dv2000)for about 4 years and despite my best efforts it's started to get a little bogged down.. SO a while ago I used some free registry cleaning software (Eusing Registry Cleaner, Window Registry Repair & Registry Repair Wizard 2011) to try to get rid of clutter on my lap top in hopes that it would run a little better. I know, I know, let me save everyone the time of telling how stupid it was to do this when I don't know that much about computers! SO as you can imagine after my little cleaning spree I started having some weird problems but mostly related to Internet Explorer. I tried to undo whatever I did but nothing worked. I actually had to stop using IE all together because I kept getting errors and couldn't get to some websites at all. It seemed to be a security setting issue but no matter what changes I made nothing would fix it. So I switched to Firefox which has been a lot better but not perfect. So now its pretty obvious that my computer is missing some files? .... drivers? ....something because I am basically unable to execute most setup files that I download and my Norton anti-virus seems to not be able to run its periodic scans correctly. Lately the computer seems to be worse, buggy, slow, freezes up and I suspect that there is a virus somewhere but no virus scan, adware scan, etc. that I've been able to run (Spy Bot, Bit Defender) finds anything and I'm to afraid to even look at the registry now... Do you have Vista DVD?Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista/7), type in:sfc /scannowClick OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista/7).Have Windows CD/DVD handy (with Vista/7, most likely, you won't need it). Hi,
Can someone review my HJT log? I did a scan to see if I could find anything suspicious because my computer has recently been a bit laggy and I can't figure out why. I keep it clean with AdAware, Symantec Professional, Spybot, RegClean, and I also defrag at least once a week or every 2 wks. So I am at a stand-still on why it's laggin, therefore I ran a HJT scan and came up with the following "missing files":

dimsntfy.dll (Winlogon Notify entry) (which I manually searched and found it in System32 and ServicePackFiles\i386 folders even though it said it was missing)

jqs.exe (Java Quick Starter Service entry) This is a new service since the latest java update that seems to run continuously in my processes even though I read online that it was only supposed to run during bootup, then stop. I found this file also in Program Files\Java\jre6\bin.

Can someone review my HJT log and tell me if i can click the "fix checked" button to remove these entries without causing any problems? Thanks.

Hello friends,

I am in a bit of a bind. I simply clicked the "show hidden files" option on my C:/Users folder. Inside of 20 seconds, my libraries are all rearranged and none of my files are where I put them originally. They have seemingly vanished.

I downloaded ShadowExplorer and thankfully confirmed that I can still open my files when I refer back to an earlier restore point within the program, but when I go to restore the files, they don't go back to where I send them. I don't know where my files are, nor how to access them outside of this ShadowExplorer program.

I did try a regular 'ol Windows system restore, but those don't affect files, so the problem remains. Anyone have any idea what the hell I did and how I might go about fixing it?

Thank you immensely for your consideration.

A:Show hidden files --> Files now missing

Hello Snapdragon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have not already, see if checking the "don't show hidden files" option will revert them back to how you had them before.

Double check the libraries to make sure that the folders you had included in them are still included.

In addition, see if setting each library to View -> "Sort by -> Name", "Group by -> (None)", and "Arrange by -> Folder" may reveal them.File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by
Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Ok so my buddy's ancient xp laptop has failing video. I logged onto it as an administrator and shared all the users documents. I proceeded to another pc in the house running Vista and created an administrator account with the same credentials as the laptop's then copied (mostly I used copy but for a few folders I used the move command) over the network the primary users profile folder. It took two attempts. It failed to connect the first time but succeeded after I returned to the laptop and disabled simple file sharing and gave the laptops administrator's user account I shared the folders from security permissions to all user folders in question.

I had my friend's girlfriend verify all her pictures were in place on the Vista PC and they were. I felt like "see I do know my stuff". They aren't computer people and have alot of old failing machines I keep going for them. I do this for a living and must have donated a not insignificant amount of time keeping their aging stuff going and I've had a string of having to tell them I simply couldn't make things like HD transcoding and playback run "any more better" or that I couldn't software fix failing hardware on their aging collection of machines. So I was happy for the successful move.

My bud's girl ended up staying on the PC's Admin's profile FaceBooking and reminiscing about the irreplaceable pictures that absolutely needed to be saved from the laptop. The ones of a recently lost loved one the lo... Read more

Good morning Bleeping Computer community,

I have the strangest thing happening in my Recent Files list on my Windows 10 computer.  Files with a ZERO byte size, NO create date, NO modify date and with name in Chinese characters appear in the Recent Files list.  This is the third time in 2 weeks I have noticed a batch of such files.  Below, I will paste in the file names that appear.  I tried copying the names into Google Translate, but that did not provide anything I understood.
These files do NOT exist if I browse to my desktop.  They are not it the Recycle Bin either.  I have unchecked all the HIDE options for File Explorer.

OS: Windows 10 Home
AV: Avast (purchased)
Make: Lenovo

What I have done so far:
1) Scan with Avast.  Nothing
2) Scan with Malware Bytes:  A few PUP that I removed.

Since those actions, the most recent batch of them appeared.  It seems a few repeat and here are the file names...

Try the programs below to see if they can find what is causing this.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.

.docx and .xlsx and .png. Most of these files were in direct onedrive main/root folder rather than in subfolders. As i can see those images in subfolders can be opened but not doc and excel files.

How can i view those files again, why have they become corrupt, what could I do in future to prevent these problems

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I have been Googling all over the place last couple of days and looking through hundreds of regkeys but cannot find the answer.

We have 1800 PC's using Offline files to a NAS location. Even though the Group Policy is set to force PC's Offline no matter what the latency value. I have noticed some PC's that have Offline files enabled but are set to work online. Maybe set manually
before the GPO was applied. Anyway I was wondering if there is a way to detect on numerous PC's whether a PC is set to work Offline or Online? I have been looking to see if a regkey changes when the Work Offline / Online button is pressed on the file menu
of the redirected folder.

I have found a key that changes if you hit the button Work Online/ Offline button
manually HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache\OnlineTransitionLog Value - (name of nas share) but this clears when the PC is rebooted or logged out and does not reappear unless you do the switch again manually.
This will not work when I try to scan all the PC's.

Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I first posted this in the Windows XP forum before realizing that it may be more appropriate for this forum....

I have been drafted to trouble shoot my in-laws computer. The system is an AMD 700 Mhz (K62 i think) with a 40 gig HD, 256 mb ram. They started experiencing problems after loading SP2. The system eventually would not get past the splash screen when it started up. After several attempts at loading safe mode I decided to cut our losses and do a clean install. Curiously, the system they purchased with XP was formatted for FAT32 and not NTFS. It appears the box was built pre-XP availability and was upgraded when it was sold in January '02.

The problem now is that after formatting the HD it has problems copying files over from the Windows XP disk. No apparent physical problems with the disk but I went and grabbed an extra XP disk from home. Same problem. So now the OS will not install.

My guess is that there's either a problem with the CD-rom, the HD or the IDE controller. Does anybody know what would be the most likely issue? I may be able to find a CD rom to swap in and try.. not so sure about the HD. CHKDSK was run and appeared fine. Any ideas to help me get back on my in-laws good side would be appreciated!

I apologize in advance for posting this twice. I think I may have put it originally in the wrong area.

I had terrible problems with spyware and some trojans. I received much help here and fixed that right up. No problems with that now but I still have some issues that haven't been corrected and I don't have a windows XP CD. It didn't come with my computer and I never bought one. Here's the problems I've noticed just so far......

1) No search option under start, search. Nothing shows but a blank box and the dog. I have no way to do a search for files or to choose options for a search.

2) In my control panel, when I click on both IE troubleshooting link and Network Diagnostics link does nothing.

3) I have no system restore. When I click on it, it does nothing.

4) I switched to Firefox as my browser since I encountered all of the problems with trojans, etc. so I can't get windows updates unless I use IE. When I click on IE and go to tools, windows update, I get a blank page. Nothing on it. It's the same way if I go directly to the microsoft homepage and try it from there. Blank page again.

5) No way to use windows media player. Apparently I downloaded something with my current version and now it's disabled and had to be uninstalled. I installed a new version but after the set up, I received an error message and it closes right up. I don't even have time to write down what it says.

What reported the hdd to be in a bad state?

Most all hdd manufacturer's have diagnostic tools which you can download as an ISO file, you then can burn this to a CD and boot from it to run the diagnostic test.  If you will pull the hdd out and post the manufacturer I will post a link to a site where you can download the file.

I've noticed that streamed .wma file appeared as .dat file in the temporary internet folder. I've tried copying it to the desktop and changed the extension to .wma but it will not play at all. I have the same problem in another laptop running Windows Vista. Please advise.

Hey now heres a dilemma for you.

I have just bought a dvd burner and was looking forward to getting some dvds from the newsgroups. But to my dismay i couldnt extract the multiple rar files from the archieve because it was slightly bigger than 4gb ie i have FAT32 system. I investigated the NTFS option but couldnt do it because i have windows pre installed on a time machine and if i change the system i cant reload windows from the hidden parts of my hdd because the specialised disc will only work in FAT32 knowing to the need of it to support NTFS systems time didnt want to because it kepts the technical support about it down. There are programs about for the xbox to extract iso's from the rar files without extracting the rar files. Then to transfer to the hdd of the xbox in one step. I was wondering does anyone know of any program that will let me extract the contents of an image/iso from rar files. I know its possible because i know of two programs for xbox iso's Called Suxx 1.02 and Craxtion 4. I would appreciated anyyy help given here. Its also difficult to explain the extract iso from rar files in a search engine.... very difficult. Or something that will let me extract the contents of a rar without getting the 4gb limit error.

Hello!

I would very much appreciate some help finding my missing files and folders if possible.

I am running windows Vista version 6.0, service pack 2.

I started windows, and noticed that 5 of my desktop folders were missing, and all of the files contained within. A search for document and folder names returned nothing (even with advanced search options). One of the missing folders was called "term 1". I created a new folder, and tried to change the name to term 1. A pop-up told me that this destination (desktop) already contained a folder named "term 1"- did I want to merge these folders? I was confused, because I could no longer see the original term 1 folder. I clicked "yes" hoping that a merge would result in a visible term 1 folder, but now the new folder also disappeared. After some intensive searching, I could not find any of the folders/files that were missing. Some other folders/files were still visible on my desktop though.

I restored my computer to a previous checkpoint (from 2 days ago, after a windows update). After reboot, I received a message that the restore was unsuccessful. At this point, all of my desktop folders and files were gone, aside from windows default desktop icons. A search returned no results. I remembered that restore can fail because of an AV program, so I disabled Norton. I tried to undo the restore, which was successful, but no files/folders returned. I then tried to do a restore to a checkpoint from befor... Read more
