Unable to configure wireless router

Q: Unable to configure wireless router

I have an Asus wireless WL-520GU that I have a wired connection to my PC. Why, because I am using the wireless only to allow access to my webradio.

Problem is the web radio connects 50% of time. Other times to connect I need to manually configure on webradio to connect to connect to wireless. It works sometimes other times not. I haven't been be to get to point of securing the SSID. So probalby someone is stealing my bandwith.

Now to explain my setup, my modem is connected to my Linksys 2102 adapter (used for VOIP) which to connected to the Lan port on the router.

I can surf the web on the PC, but trying to establish a connection, the PC does not recognize a wireless device. I cannot even access the Asus web interface (192.168.1.1)

My default gateway is 192.168.0.1 that of the Linksys adapter,

How to enable SSID so I can lock it and I can access the wireless problem-free from the web radio (Aluratek) ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The easiest way is to run the CD that should have come with the Router, if you havent got it then you will have to configure it manually.

Full instructions can be found on the netgear website here.

Apparently this is a common problem but I'm unable to fix it:
I have a DSL modem (Bell Sympatico) and a wireless router (D-Link WBR-2310). I made a wireless network which works fine, but I want to enable encryption and need to access the router's configuration screen at 192.168.0.1.

Trouble is I can't seem to access it - my browser attempts to connect to it as a web address.

I've been told I need to set a static IP, so I changed my IP to 192.168.0.2 and the default gateway and DNS server to 192.168.0.1. This didn't work - in fact after I did this I couldn't connect to ANYTHING. So I must have done something wrong. Clearly I don't know what I"m doing and am in over my head

My cousin is using AOL DSL services. Before he can access the web he must log-in his AOL username and password on the computer. I notice it is not a constant connection like RCN or Pacbell service, where it does not require users to log-in. Which automatically obtain the IP dynamically or with a static IP the user put in.

The problem is that he recently bought a Linksys Wireless Router from Fry's Electronics and the other wireless device attach to the computers and laptops. We are not sure how to configure the Linksys Wireless router.

Please let me know if you encounter the same problem and was able to resolve it.

Thanks in advance.

I have two subnets on my home network, one for my family's Internet access and one for my video surveillance system.

https:[email protected]/14869987704/

Sorry for the link rather than inserting a picture but I don't have an account anywhere I can link to the picture or don't know how from Flickr.

It all works correctly except for the wireless connection on the video network. I'm trying to use the wireless router as an access point instead of router; maybe that just won't work with the two routers I've tried. Alternatively, I could have a third subnet for the wireless cameras but I am unsure how to make that work so that the dual-homed PC could access it.

What is best? To buy an access point rather than a router? Or manual route to a third subnet? If the latter, I'd appreciate any instruction on how to configure it. I've read some articles from various router makers on it but it's still not clear.

Thanks,

Dale

I purchased a Linksys WRT54G wireless router (version 4) from amazon and when it arrived in the mail, there was no CD with it. I thought it was a new router, but I think it must have been used as it has a goodwill price tag on the underside of it. How do I get this router to send a wireless signal throughout my house without the CD?

So far I have connect the blue ethernet cord from the router to my internet modem and another ethernet cord from my router to my computer. I also have both the wireless router and the internet modem powered up. There is one numbered light on which is where I have the ethernet cord from the computer connected to the router and the internet light is blinking.

I have done several internet searches trying to find how I can send a wireless signal through my house with this router and the main thing I got was to go to the address 192.168.1.1 and configure my router. The thing is though, is that while I can configure the router with a password and everything, I still cannot get connected to the internet. Can anyone walk me through this step by step?

Hi. Need a lot of help here please......
Let me quickly describe the situation.

I have an ADSL broadband router.
I have recently purchased a NETGEAR WGT 624 wirless router so that I can connect laptops to our network.

Following advice posted on this site previously, I have use lan cable to connect the ADSL router to the netgear. I somehow managed to turn off the DHCP server and have set a static address. I have no idea how i did this or what the static address is, as I fiddled a lot and somehow got it to work.

As I sit here my laptop is able to connect to the wireless network and pick up the network called NETGEAR. It is only a local connection however and does not pickup the internet.
If I plug in a lan cable from the NETGEAR to the laptop, I then have internet connectivety.

The main problem is I have no idea how to configure the netgear router. The manual says:

To log into your router after you have configured your router, do the following:
1. Type http://www.routerlogin.net in the address field of Internet Explorer or Netscape®
Navigator.
When prompted, enter admin for the router user name and password for the router password,
both in lower case letters (or enter the password you chose if you changed it during the setup
in “Initial Configuration” on page 3-2).
Note: The router user name and password are not the same as any user name or password you
may use to log in to your Internet connection.

Ok, not sure if this is possible but I am sure someone will set me straight. Here is the setup I currently have. I have a Netgear wireless router connected to a couple of computers, no problems at all with it, next, in another room, I have a desktop computer with a wireless card installed to access my network. Is it possible to hook my extra wireless router (D-Link DI524) to this computer and configure it to act like an access point to extend my signal further through my house? If so how is this done? I need detailed instructions. Someone told me I could do it this way with a crossover cable attached to the computer and the router....is this true? Any help would be great. Thanks, Mike

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

Hi All

Not a network expert so need a little help here!

I live out in the sticks so the only way to get an internet connection is through a white box radio receiver made by a company called Alvarion. It's stuck on the outside of the house and only has one wire protruding. This wire runs inside and ends in an ethernet connection. I've been using this to connect to the internet.

So far so good. But now I was hoping to be able to somehow turn this ethernet connection into a wireless connection.

I have a Thomson TG585v8 wireless router and was wondering if there is a way that I can use this? I tried just plugging the Alvarion ethernet connection into one of the Thomson's ports but this didn't work.

I read somewhere that I need to turn off the DHCP for the Thomson router but I can't work out how to get into the configuration menu to do so. If I connect the Thomson directly to my laptop and go to the default Thomson Gateway (192.168.1.254) it asks for a username and password and I can't get past this. I've already tried Administrator and a blank password and I've tried the Network Name and Wireless Key just in case, but to no avail. I reset the router but still no luck. I've also tried going to dsldevice.lan but. again, no luck.

Well, I may be wildly off track but if someone would be kind enough to steer me in the right direction it would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Chew

Hello,I have replaced our old router with a new one and can't seem to get it to work.I have a Sierra Wiress 306 3g Modem, connected with Bigpond. It is working when plugged directly into the computer via USB.I had it plugged into a Netcomm router, which was ethernet cable connected to the destop and also our TIVO device. I was able to link o the internet wirelessly from my laptop - though not if someone was using the desktop at the same time. I suspect an IP address conflict was at fault here, though had no clue how to fix that.My actual problem is my Netcom router no longer works and I've had to purchase another. When I plug my router into the computer I get an error message saying there is another computer on this network with the IP address.... but I tried to change the IP address of the router, to no avail....I returned that router and got another and ended up with the same problem. Something tells me there's nothing wrong with the router or my computer, but perhaps it's my incompetence. That's where you come in...Thanks,Jennifer.

The wireless network shows with good signal, but when I try to connect to it, it always tells me I can't.
Interestingly enough, my other three laptops can connect wirelessly to the router just fine, and this netbook I'm using is able to connect to other wireless routers (like the one at school). This netbook is also able to connect to the router successfully only when it is wired.

Here's the basic computer specification from TSG SysInfo:
Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.1
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate , 32 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor 900MHz, x86 Family 6 Model 13 Stepping 8

Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., 900HD, x.xx, EeePC-0123456789
Antivirus: BitDefender Antivirus, Updated and Enabled

Here's what I did:
Windows troubleshoot: it says an error at access point but offer no solution
Refreshed the adapter
Refreshed the modem and router
Made sure the setting of the router is correct (i.e. DHCP is enabled, MAC is enabled.)
Tried to connect without password
Updated/Reinstalled my driver
Did the Windows 7 router compatibility test or whatever...it said the router is suitable

Can someone please please help? This is driving me insane.

A:Unable to connect to wireless router

Have you installed security on the wireless connection (Wep, wpa?) If so, might be worth changing to a different protocol (eg, if WEP use one of wpa protocols, if wpa, use wep or a different wpa. Also could try removing it altogether to see if that's causing issue).

Sometimes two wireless devices are just incompatible (so you basically have to replace one of them - eg, different router or different wireless card in the laptop - or could try a usb dongle to check) or vista might be causing the incompatibility. Does your vista laptop connect ok with other wireless networks? If you haven't tried it, best to before perhaps having the router replaced.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NA... Read more

I followed a link from facebook and a suspicious pop-up came up. I believe at this point my desktop became infected.

The wireless internet connection indicator in my system tray showed a red "X" over it. I was still connected, however, and able to access the internet. When I clicked on the internet connection, it just said that my current settings didn't match those of the connection. At this point, I updated my anti-virus software (free version of Avast) and Malwarebytes (also free version) figuring I didn't have long before I lost the internet completely.

I tried deleting the internect connection profile from the "Manage Network Connections" section of the control panel. WHen I tried to reconnect to my home wireless network it continued to tell me that my passphrase was incorrect, and it wouldn't connect. However, I know that the password is correct, and that the wireless router is (was, more on that later) connected to the internet because I could access the wireless network with other devices (iPad2 for instance).

I ran a "quick scan" in Avast, didn't find anything. I ran a full scan with Malwarebytes and it found a lot of things. I removed them. I restarted my computer and logged in using Safe Mode with Networking. I ran another Malwarebytes' scan and it didn't find anything.

The issue persists.

When using network troubleshooter,
it recommend me to turn off the router, keep it for 10 secs, and turn it back on,
i've done so, but the problem still there
and then the troubleshooter say there're some problem on the access point or the network adapter (Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN)

but it seems no problem with other networks and all laptops except this S57B works fine..

and the strangest of all is: somtimes it works fine, and sometimes disconnected + unable to connect.

What possibly causing the problem?

I have had trouble adding a separate cisco switch and a wireless router onto the comcast cable router. I have the phone and internet. After running a PING test I saw the speed was significantly slowed down by 1/4 due to the netgear wireless router. So I unplugged that and bought a non-wireless cisco router that did not slow the speed down. Now I need a wireless router as my wife bought a Ipodtouch. Don't waist your money on one of these, get the real ipod phone! Just a note! These are worthless if you can't get online! Only good for photo's, Music, and videos downloaded onto it. Back to the wireless network problem. The main router needs to have multiple ports or the DNS will not work. I am guessing you are running more then 1 router inline.

Hi all

On my (Hardwired) Win 7 desktop and a wireless Win 8 laptop I can see my RT-AC68U router in the network (1st image) also showing my win 7 laptop is connected, however I am unable to see the Router on my wireless Win 7 Laptop (2nd image) although I am connected to the router and can use the internet freely. There must be some settings in Win 7 to enable me to see it. I have a 2TB drive connected to the router containing may films and TV programs, it would be nice to view them on all devices. I've looked through the tutorials and used the search but but generally the search comes up with problems connecting to the router.

Edit: Just connected my spare Win 7 laptop and that can see the Router??? Baffled

A:Unable to see Router in Network from wireless Win 7 laptop

A few things can cause this
is the laptop in the same workgroup as the other pcs
is its ip range the same
from a cmd prompt type
netsh wlan show network

can you see it there?

Hi there,

I'm having some troubles accessing my router (netgear) homepage in order to access the wireless settings. I'm currently in housing that provides internet access as included in the rent. As a result the internet is accessed via a proxy server and runs through one ethernet cable coming out of the wall. I wanted to establish a wireless network within the house and can do that, however I'm not able to access any of the security settings for the wireless router.

I have run cmd ipconfig and checked that the ip address matches my default gateway http://192.168.1.1 but everytime I try the connection times out. I can access my internet fine using the wired connection and the wireless connection, though I don't really want to use the wireless when I can't change the security settings!

I was wondering if the problems I was having was because I have to use the proxy server? If so is there any way around this that I can change my wireless routers security settings?

I apologise if some of this information seems confused, I am only just learning the joys of wireless networking and am keen to know more! many thanks

John

A:Unable to connect to wireless router's homepage

It should be the router that accesses the proxy and not the machines in the house. So you should have direct access to the router.

Are you using a wired connection to the router to change settings? It is a good idea to use a wire for settings since it is easy to block yourself from the router while trying to set wireless settings.

Hi there,

I have recently changed the way I get access to internet . Previously it was getting access through a phone line and now I am having access to it by radio waves which means I am no longer using a modem but a wireless router ONLY. My router name's Netgear (WGR614 54Mbps) and everything is working properly.

Now that I have decided to upgrade my wireless router to a wireless Netgear (WNR2000 300 Mbps) I get into troubles. Each time I try to install the new I get the following message

"Internet connection not available".

this is because there is no modem anymore and I am not sure at all how to overcome this issue.

Any advise or help will be welcome,

Thnak you all,

Pascal

I just bought a D-Link PCI card for wireless Internet (DWA 525 , Wireless N 150 Desktop PCI adapter).
I installed the adapter and the driver on my PC, surfed the Internet for hours.
But the next day , when i tried connecting to my Router , it wouldnt connect. ("Windows is unable to connect to <SSID>")

Here are the things I have tried ::
1)I am able to connect to the same router , using my laptop and 2 wifi enabled mobile.
2)I tried changing the SSID , the encryption type (even keeping it open). Still couldnt connect.
3)Reset my router , and tried to connect with its default setting.
4)Tried connecting to a manually created adhoc connection via my laptop as well as my android device (Hotspot), and connected to them successfully.
5)Updated the firmware on my router and installed the latest driver for the adapter.
6)Tried connecting to the same by booting into Ubuntu.
7)Tried connecting using various wireless network connection softwares.

is it the router settings ?
or my PCI card ?

I have exactely the same problem as You!
I first used a TP-link in the one and only PCI-Express-16-slot. Worked perfect in my Acer Aspire M5800. Then my grafic card broke down and the new blocked the slot! So I changed to D-link DWA 525 full PCI but cannot make it work . Hope someone can help us!

Starting this past Monday, my personal laptop can no longer connect to the wireless router. It can see my network in the list, but says it can't connect ("Windows cannot connect to Kim's Network") and gives me suggestions for how to deal with a weak signal. There are no problems with the signal, as my work laptop connects just fine and the fact that the personal laptop won't connect even sitting right next to the router. I've had intermittent issues with interference from my cordless phone in the past, but this doesn't seem to be the problem this time because it hasn't been able to connect in 5 days.

I've done all the regular things -- resetting router, updating software, checking for updated drivers, etc., and nothing so far has helped.

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1720, running Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1, using an Airport Extreme router.

I have recently setup a small, home, wireless network. It has been running flawlessly for about two months now. A couple of days ago, we had power to the house drop out for a couple of seconds (while the host computer was on and connected to the internet) and since then I've had this problem.

Host is running XP pro. MB has built-in network adapter which is connected to my Belkin wireless router. The router is connected to a motorola cable modem.

My son's computer is running XP home. It has a belkin desktop wireless card installed. His computer can, wirelessly, access the internet. Everything on his system works properly and was unaffected by the power flash.

The host computer operates normally on all local operations, but cannot access the internet. It cannot renew the IP address when I click "repair" connection. I can't directly access the router by typing in 192.168.2.1 on IE's address bar (from belkin's manual). XP tells me the network adapter is "working properly". I've looked at all of the obvious (to me) settings in the various network settings tabs and everthing matches up with how it was setup before. I've uninstalled the network adapter though XP and let XP detect new hardware at startup and that didn't help. The router and modem seem OK since they're both working for my son's system. I have tried replacing the cable from the computer to the router too.

I have run the ping... Read more

It has been acting up big time in the last couple days. The speed (Mbps) fluncuates up and down, and constantly disconnects me. I have tried resetting the modem, but it will still do it after some time. I have the newest filmware. Why did it just start acting up now?

It has got to be the placement of the router. I have it in its own room on the same floor as my laptop, but its on a desk about 3 ft high. Perhaps on the ceiling?

This morning my internet connection worked perfectly at home. I connected to the server at my university without a problem, but when I came home I could no longer connect to my wireless router.

I use Windows XP and it says that I am connected to the router with an excellent signal, but IE and Firefox both go to the "Address Not Found" page. I'm on my hardwired PC right now which works perfectly fine, so the problem must be when I connected to the university network.

When I repair the connection it won't finish because the IP address will not renew, yet it says I'm connected. How come my IP doesn't match?

A:Failure to connect via wireless router: unable to renew IP adress

I put in netgear wireless llb pcmcia card in my compaq running xp

The driver seems to be OK and the computer recognizes the card

It says wireless network not connectec

when I try to connect or try to view wireless connections
I get message windows can't configure the wireless network

When I tried to follow the instructions on the microsoft site,
and tried to run the program it said to run to let windows zero configure the network It couldn't find the program

What if anything can I do

Unfortunately I can't connect the computer to the internet without the wireless as I'm out of town, typing this in now at a library computer, which right now is my only occasional access to the internet until I get this straightened out.

A:can't get wireless to work on notebook --message windows can't configure wireless

Chances are that when you installed the Netgear driver and utility you told the utility that you wanted it to manage the wireless. Its icon should be in the Notification Area--double click on it, go to the Network (I'm going from memory here) tab, find the network you want and connect to it.

Welcome to TSG:
Don't think I understand your problem.
Is this a cable or dsl CONNECTION?
Any error msgs ?

When you think you are having the problem you describe:

From a Johnwill post on the Networking Forum

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address> For all addresses,follow instructions below….

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING www.yahoo.com
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. IPV4 for Vista

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

A:how to configure router?

I've started your own thread for you here, as it gets too confusing to work problems of multiple people in one thread.

Please post the brand and model of both the modem and router. In general you unplug the modem and router and shut down computers. Connect the modem to the router's WAN (or Internet or Modem) port and a computer to a router LAN (usually numbered) port. Plug in modem; plug in router; boot computer.

You should have internet access and can login to the router to configure the wireless. If you don't have a router user guide on CD download it from the manufacturer's web site.
