Q: Unable to access workgroup computer

I have connected two Win XP computers through a hub. ICS seems to be wrking, but one computer (B) is unable to access the other computer (A). Computer A is able to ful ly access computer B. I have turned off simple file sharing, but cannot set permissions so that a user of B can access A. When I look for users in locations, only the local computer and user are available. How do I set permission for the user on the other computer?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

Hi I have a home network of 4 computers. I have recently installed Windows 7 on 3 of them - the other is XP Professional. Since then I have not been able to see/share/ping with any of the computers, which are all in the same workgroup. Also If i try to set up a Homegroup on the 3 Windows 7 pcs after creating a homegroup then trying to join it on a 2nd pc the message There is currently no homegroup on the network is displayed. My knowledge of networking is small. The networking Trouble Shooter gives a 'Your computer appears to be correctly configured but the DNS Server is not responding'. The Homegroup troubleshooter cannot find a problem on either machine. I have no problems connecting to the Internet from any machine. Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

I have a home network via a wired router wiith 5 ("A" - "E") computers all in the same workgroup running Win XP. All the workgroup computers are visible from each other. However, all of a sudden one of the computers ("A") cannot be accessed to share its files or even to check its properties. When I try to get to "A" from Network Neighborhood, I get these error messages: " 'A' is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource" or "You do not have appropriate access rights for this server" It ("A") is able to get into others on the netwok and copy, move etc file to it without problems. File sharing etc.is turned on for the Shared documents folder. I tried turning off my firewall, etc (Norton Internet Security) and because I use Norton, my Windows firewall is normally off. Still the same problem. I can "Ping" "A" without problems from "B" etc.I've run and rerun the Win XP Network Setup Wizard without correcting the problem and know the computer is on the network but there must be some security setting I'm missing (This is one of my kid's computers so they may have changed something unknown to me). I've also run the most recent Norton AntiVirus scan. "A" has Win XP Home and "B" has Home, "C" has XP Pro.

I have 4 computer in my home. (2 xp home and 2 pro.) and joining the same workgroup. All are working properly without any problem previously. However, I have met a problem recently.

When I try to access the network neighbourhood, it pop up an error dialog box:

" is not accessible. You may not have permission to access this server. Please contact your Administrator....".

All of my PC have disable the firewall and it can connect to the PC directly by type the PC name. Does anyone meet the same problem before?

I have 2 PC's both running XP Pro. I have a Lynx's Wireless router model BEFW11S4. I have one computer with EtherFast 10/100 Lan Card and 1 PCI wireless card. Both computers connect to the internet via the Lynx's cable modem. I am able to connect to the internet with no problems on both computers.
The problem is that I am unable to connect to the workgroup on each computer. I go to network places and show workgroup computers and it tells me that the workgroup is not available, and that I may not have permissions to access that workgroup. Whats weird is that on the wireless computer, in the system tray it shows that the computer is connected to the workgroup. Although when the wireless PC comes up, it does not make the connection to the workgroup until I manually connect. It says because the WEP setting is not set, it won't auto connect. So I configured the WEP setting, and the PC would not even connect to the internet then.

My goal is to be able to share files on each computer in the shared files folder and the printer on the wireless computer and make sure both can connect to the internet. I have gone to the share files and security and made the shared documents folder shared, and I still can't see anybody. I am also unable to see the other computer from the computer I am on.

Please give detailed instructions or questions.

Unable to access workgroup templates with Office 97

Steps to point word and powerpoint to use templates:
--If not mapped to correct share -- then map
--Open Word
--File Location
--Select Workgroup templates
--Select template share
--Template folders in share should appear as tabs

I have noticed with Office 2k that when you select LAN share only the letter is show (ex. T:\)
With office 97 the share name shows (ex. \\cwsfs2\templates)

Error with Office 97 when going to File - New
Cannot open the template in the Workgroup Template location you selected.

I have a Windows PC used purely for storage. It is shared by 10 other Laptops.

The laptops are running Windows 10.
I created users on the Win 7 PC.
Shared the folders.
Created mapped drives on the Win 10 laptops.
This has been operating with very few issues for a number of years.
Today 2 laptops are unable to access the mapped drives.
I have uninstalled the Antivirus.
I have updated the Intel Lan cards.
Run Ipconfig /renew. Wouldn't renew.

Changed the registry setting - HKey-Local Machine\system\... to allow access.
PROBLEM solved - Windows 7 update caused a conflict. Rolled back to a previous restore point - Bingo it worked.

When trying to connect a PC to my workgroup, I get the following error:

"Weldon is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of of servers for this workgroup isnot currently available."

Both machines are running XP. Permissions were never set. I can connect any other PC (including my new laptop running Windows 7) to the workgroup but not this particular PC. It has to be something within the PC itself but I am lost.

The workgroup is called WELDON. I have exhausted all the settings I know to check.

Home computer is connected to the router via an ethernet cable and notebook computer connects via the router.

Both machines have good internet connectivity.

Recently I tried setting up a home network, so I can share a few files between a laptop and the computer.

Since both the laptop and the desktop are connectd to the same internet connection, I used the method of making sure both are in the same 'workgroup', and then share the files. It worked fine on my laptop, where I changed the Workgroup to that of my Desktop. Further I went to my computer, my network places and then view workgroup computers. On the laptop, I see that, but I do not see my desktop even though it's in the same Workgroup.

I tried to go to the 'view workgroup computers' on my Desktop but it did not allow me to go in, saying that I might not have the rights from the administrator to access that. I dont know how that's possible seeing that I only have one user on desktop, and I assumed it to be the admin.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

I have set up a home wireless network consisting of a desktop PC running XP Home and a laptop running Vista Home Premium. I have set up one shared folder on each machine. They are both on the same workgroup. From the laptop I can see the shared folder over the network on the desktop PC. However, when I try to access the shared folder on the laptop from the desktop it requires authentication and asks for a username and password. However I have not set up the laptop to need a username and password to log in... is there a way round this?

Vista's default sharing is to require a password on the account to allow file sharing. Create a password on the login accounts for the machines and see if that helps. You can also create a user account on the Vista machine that matches the name/password as is used to login to the XP machine to eliminate the issue.

Hi Everyone,

I have a Workgroup consisting of a variety of Windows computers, XP, Vista & Windows 7. On one of the Windows 7 (32 Bit) computers I have the Downloads folder shared, this way I can download my drivers and the like to a central location and then access them from other computers in the Workgroup.

Whilst the Downloads folder can easily be "seen" between the Windows 7 computers whenever I try to look at the Workgroup from an XP computer I see the following message -

This message is presented when I double click on the Workgroup itself, I don't even get to the point where I can see the various Workgroup members, let alone the Shared Folders belonging to the respective members.

The XP Computer is definitely a part of the same Workgroup (e.g.: has the same Workgroup name as the Vista / W7 computers)

I tried this Microsoft Fix to no avail.

If anybody has any suggestions on how to overcome this they will be greatly appreciated.

The "simultaneous remote access" restrictions may be in play here. For XP Home only 5 simultaneous accesses and for XP Pro only 10. I think, but am not sure, that Windows 7 is the same. It has always been hard to determine exactly what is "an access."

I have gotten my network setup to the point where I can see my computer in the workgroups folder on the other computer. But when I double click it I get an error message saying "\\Reddragon is not accessible. You might not have permission to access this resource. I've attached a screenshot. Also, Norton and any other firewall have been shut off on both computers. I really would appreciate any help guys/girls.

We have workgroup network of 7 computers names MSHOME.
All computers are using Windows XP operating system.
Sofar everything was ok but today 1 computer is not showing in workgroup computer list and can not access too.

Let's name the computer with problem "Test PC".
The Test PC having Dynamic DHCP IP address and can successfully access the Internet.
But it can not view or access the other computers in the Same Workgroup.
The Test PC is also able to ping Local host and can ping the default gate way computer.
But It can not ping the other computers of same workgroup.
The interesting thing is that other computers can ping the Test PC by its IP address but can not ping by computer name.

The Test PC Doesn't have any Firewall.
The Test PC connection is using the following items:
1. Client service for Netware
2. Client for Microsoft Networks
3. File & Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
4. QOS Packet Scheduler
5. NWLink NetBIOS
7. Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If I uncheck item 1,5 and 6 then Test PC name it self is not showing in "View Work Group Computers".

I have also checked Computer Browser service status. It's status is started and start up type is Automatic.
Please help me to fix this problem.

I recently setup printer sharing for someone in their office. It took me all of about 2 mins to do so since I have done it many times. Two days later, he calls me up to let me know it stopped working. I thought it was just something simple but when I got there, I couldn't figure out what had happened. Here is the situation:

Computer A - Windows XP Pro SP2 with printer attached
Computer B - Windows XP Pro SP2 wants to use shared printer

Computer B can no longer access the workgroup. Computer A can see Computer B on the workgroup but cannot access it. When I double click on the computer name it wants a username and password??? Something like Guest\(computer name).

What confuses me is that Computer B can't access the Workgroup yet Computer A can see it on there. Also, how did this randomly happen after it was working fine? I checked all firewall settings and its all correct. Any help would be appreciated - Thanks.

Hey everyone.

I'm suffering from a rather strange problem that I've only just today come across.

I'm trying to enable file sharing across my Desktop PC and my new Notebook. As always I went through the usual routes, going to Network Connections, Advanced, Network identification and so forth...

But my problem is this. While all is fine on my new notebook, the area where I'd input my Desktop computer Description is greyed out. The name is fine, as is the Work Group. In addition, if I try to access 'My Network Places -> Workgroup Computers', it fails to respond.

My notebook also can't see my Desktop PC on there even though the network is enable and healthy as far as I'm aware.
I'm fairly sure this isn't a router problem, but something OS specific... And yes, unfortunately I'm on XP Home. Not the best system for File Sharing activities!

I have a two computer network set-up consisting of one WinXP Home and one WinXP Pro, both on SP2. Recently, SyncToy stopped working on the XP Home machine - it said that the target server was not available. The shares could be seen in 'My Network Places'. Clicking on one of these shares prompted me for a password for a username of 'Guest'. I took a guess at this based on passwords I commonly use and eventually found it. SynToy started to workagain. I have to do this now for each session.

What has changed and how can I put it back as it was, with no password?

It's impossible to even understand how unbelievably pissed off I am right now. You know, when you tell a network administrator, that "access is denied" to his own home PCs? Hmm? Do you? You can't even imagine. I DO NOT take kindly to my computers giving
me an error saying "Access denied". With that said, let's continue.
Enter computer name.

This is not difficult. This is standard functionality in Windows. All admin accounts. Forced login via "net use" before connecting. Stored credentials. Same passwords and logins on each. Everything. Exactly. As. It. Should. Be.

3 computers, all cannot manage each other. 2 Win7 Pro x64 and 1 Win7 Home x64.
Comp1 -> Comp3 [FAIL]
Comp3 -> Comp1 [FAIL]
Comp2 -> Comp3 [FAIL]

All firewalls are disabled. No matter what, if I do it from Computer Management, or from Services, or from Regedit... EVERY SINGLE ONE fails. I simply CANNOT ACCESS these remote services and it's pissing me right off.

I set up identical Win7 RTM x64 Home Premium virtual machines* and I saw exactly the same behavior there too, on brand new systems. So I knew it wasn't a problem with my system. And, recalling the event log from auditing failures, it seems that my user
account was being denied access to the services DB. As it should be with UAC without elevation.

See, when UAC is enabled, the "admin user account" is not an admin. The system utilizes "UAC virtualization", which basically "RunAs"'s a process with elevated privileges as needed. Since network access uses the local user account, that's why you don't
get (and never will get) share access to your Program Files and Windows folders.

So, on the test virtual machines, I set them both to "Never prompt". Then rebooted. Then tested it. Both ways connected successfully to the Services manager. OK. So I enabled UAC on the first VM and left it off on the other, and rebooted. Now the second

So here's my problem: I just set up some new Windows 7 Professional 32 bit machines in this office. Currently, the network type is set to Work, and all computers are a member of the same Workgroup, and Password Protected Sharing on the computer being used as a server is set to "Off". I've run into a situation now where I need to change that to On. I've got another computer that's set up as somewhat of a workstation and a secondary server/print server. It has password protected sharing turned on, and I'm not receiving the same error on this machine, even though the settings, if I remember correctly, are all the same.

The error is: Logon Failure: The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.

I have already created identical user accounts and passwords on the machines. And as I said, one computer works fine, and the other does not. One of the things I thought of tonight as I was sitting around is that maybe I need to change the setting under HomeGroup connections to "User user accounts and passwords" rather than "Allow Windows to manage", but I just don't know if that has anything to do with it at all. I'm even fairly positive that the second server that isn't having this issue has the "Allow Windows" option checked.

Either way, I'm extremely confused by this, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Click on Start and type secpol.msc press enter.

Go to Local Policies=> User Rights Assignment
Double-click on "Log on as batch job" on the right
Click the "Add User or Group..." button and add the Users.

If that didn't help, please choose 'Log on Locally' then add the Users

Hi everyone, I have a workgroup and 2 computers (XP & Win7) on that workgroup all connected via 1 router. My roomate is sharing the router and internet connection and he is in his own workgroup. When he goes to browse the network he is able to see and access my windows XP shared folders. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening? I thought if I have the machines on a different workgroup he should not be able to access those files.

A:Windows 7 in Different Workgroup Can Still Access Windows XP Computer

Yes, you will need to setup XP with NTFS and set permissions properly on the system as a whole and remove the everyone group from that folder and make sure you have your rights added to it. or disable sharing on the folder.

Workgroups do not control access to any systems whatsoever, they just contain groups of PC's and Shares. You can access systems across workgroups, it's more of a network organization thing.

Users in Workgroup A should not always be able to access everything on systems in Workgroup B, but could have some access to some things across both, and vice versa.

It's all in the permissions....

You do need to be careful with Permissions, you can break things or completely hose a system all to heck.

Just upgraded XP to Windows 7. Networking a Windows 7 laptop to a HP desktop which was XP (now Windows 7). Desktop sees laptop and files. Laptop cannot see desktop. When I change advance setting on desktop to allow others to see the drives on the desktop, it automatically reverts back and will not allow this change.

I set all of them to the same workgroup, and they all have the same exact accounts (user name and password), but when you go to workgroup computers, no other computer shows up. What OS for servers and what OS for workgroup computers are we talking about here?

You say you are having problems setting up the workgroup, so I gather that the workgroup has never been yet successfully established and actually worked - is that correct?

How big of a network of computers are we talking about here? Are the workgroup computers on the same network segment or different segments?

Have you setup the workgroup accounts using the group policy editor?

In the meantime, you can try the following if you are up to it, and if the workgroup of computers has worked in the past.

If its a small network (lets say 5-10 computers max), I would shutdown all of the computers, shutdown the network, bring up the network, then bring up the computers or reverse the last two steps as an alternative if at first it does not work.

Please help on a Win XP Home PC that is not able to see itself or other PCs in the LAN. "Workgroup is not accessible"
Accessing Internet is no problem.
Other PCs in the LAN can not see the rogue PC.
The router is pingable, but attempts to ping itself or other LAN PCs time out.
I can ping
If I boot safe mode there is not a problem.
I have disabled Windows firewall and Norton.
MSCONFIG used to take out startup items and services but still no joy.
ICMP incoming echo is enabled.
I have done a repair install of Windows and SFC/scannow.
Same problem on a newly created XP account.

Recently i purchased a D-Link 8 Port Switch to link my two (2) laptops on the network at home. One laptop is running Vista Home and the other is on XP Pro.

I assiged static IP address on both laptops and left Workgroup name as default (WORKGROUP). I'm able to ping it's laptop local IP address but not able to ping the other laptop IP address nor i cannot view the laptops in My Network Places & vice versa.

When i changed the IP address and used the same IP address which is already used on the other laptop, I'm prompting with IP Conflict or IP already used on the network.

Need your instruction what to do next.

This is a clean install of Vista on a Gateway notebook, using the OS CD supplied by Gateway.

System is a Intel Core 2 Dou 1.83 CPU with 4GB of RAM.

320GB harddrive, the C Drive is about 75GB after repartitioning it.

The install of Vista went smoothly and I have updated everything via Windows Update.

My problem is that I can not change the name of the network workgroup from "WORKGROUP" to "HOME".

When I get in there to do it it lets me make the change, but when I click OK to save it I get the following error...

"The following error occurred validating the name "STEVE-LAPTOP".
A general network error occurred."

I tried doing it in safe mode and it is greyed out there I can't even type in a new name.

I have a problem when I try to change my workgroup name in Windows XP.

Start / Setting / Control Panel / System
or Right Click on "my computer" / Properties

Then I go in Computer's name. In there, the line with the "Network ID" button is disable. (not normal) (Even if I log as the administrator) (see first picture attached)

Then I go to the "Modified..." button and I can't choose a domain or workgroup, or change the name of them (even if I log in as the administrator) (see 2nd picture)

About my network settings, My computer has a wireless adapter which it connect to a router (Linksys G (don't remember the model)) which 2 others computers are wired connected to it. From my wireless computer I can ping them. I can play network games with. But with the neighborhood, the wired computers can see each other even my wireless computer. But from my computer, i can't see the others computers. So I taught by changing my workgroup name it would help to reset the neighborhood. But I can't change it.

If someone can help me, it will be very appreciable. Thank you

My first post here, and potentially a long one but I'll try to keep it brief as I (desperately) need help! One of the main problems is that the symptoms are different every time the computer boots up, thereby making it difficult to describe as what happens sometimes does not happen other times.

The problem is basically that my laptop, the main machine from which I work, cannot connect to my server and nothing I have tried has fixed the problem.

The network:

"Managed" by an ADSL router with NAT / DCHP etc. There are 3 clients. They are all set to acquire settings via DCHP. Several IP addresses are reserved by MAC address so the machines retain them always and there is a small pool of spare addresses on top of that.
The workgroup is called Plesbit. The clients are:
Plesbit-1 (running XP Pro), acts as a file server and runs 24/7.
Plesbit-2 (running XP Pro), a laptop and the workhorse. Network drives (K-N) map to the appropriate shares on the server. All work is done from those drives and all data therefore stored on the server.
Plesbit-3 (running Win98SE), you can pretty much ignore, I tell you it's there only for completeness. It's almost never turned on.
All connect via 54g wireless.

For over a year this network has happily run to my original config - boot up the laptop, as soon as you log in it connects to the wireless and the network drives automatically map. Open any program and your files from the server are there for you. But all that ... Read more

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset [log_file_name]

Note: the log_file_name needs to be specified, e.g. netsh int ip reset reset.log

I have recently formatted my computer. I have installed Windows XP on the machine and now I cannot access my workgroup.

I am connected to my network via ethernet, I have made sure I am on the right workgroup and I am.. but I still get the message..

"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The whole thing first started about a year ago. It started with me not being able to right click on things such as my browser icon and stuff like that, but then I couldn't get into my settings, then my documents. I tried many things online, but it was to no prevail. I then stopped using my computer for a few months, periodically spending 3-4 hours every few months trying new methods such as entering commands into cmd and PowerShell, but I never got anywhere with that. I haven't touched the pc in about 2 months, last time I was trying to reset the pc by clicking the power off button and holding some keys, it was something like Alt+Tab & one of the F keys or something. After that it would be like "choose an operating system" or whatever then it would show 3 options, the first 2 were the same, they said Windows 10 then something I cant remember, the problem was they weren't the same as the one in the screenshot/video tutorials I was coming across, the next option was windows 7 I think. After I would click one of the options, it would give me more options such as to save or to not save any information. So, here we are, I am without a computer and just have my Xbox to rely on for YouTube & the internet. If anybody would like to assist me it would be much appreciated. Thank you. I have windows xp and when i clicked on my computer an error message poped up saying this....

the instruction at "0x01ced065" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

we have network setup with mor ethan 50 computers, only belong to the same domain. there is one machine , that i cannot access the shared files on it nor the shared printers. i can access shared files on all the computers, except that one. i tried to access it from different computers it tells me the same thing : "windows cannot find "\\computer name\C$. check the spelling or try again..." however, from this machine is able to access all the other shared files ont he other computers in the network
i checked the file and printer sharing is enabled and the permissions are set right.
i looked on the microsoft website, i couldn't find anything. i looked online , no luck.
i really can't figure out the problem.

You are trying to access the administrative share on that PC. Set up another share outside the root share and set the permissions to everyone.

I have a strange problem . I can't access to the workgroup . The problem is that Microsoft Windows Network doesn't appear.

1.folder "Entire Network" has only three icons :
Web Client Network
Microsoft Terminal Services
Adobe Driver cs4 Network
the icon Microsoft Windows Network does not appear
I was able to fix the problem with uninstall "file and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network" from Local Area Connection Properties -> after that restart PC ->
and install the same "file and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network" in Local Area Connection Properties

The problem is that after a while the icon Microsoft Windows Network doesn't appear again and I don't have access to the workgroup

Check that all your network services are Started:

COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations only)
WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations only)

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

I have 3 Acer Aspires on workgroup, a 6930, a 5517 and a 5732Z, They all have Windows 7 Home Premium. All the computers can access each others public files except none can access the 6930. It appears in the other two's network screen, but when I attempt to access the 6930 is states that "Windows cannot access ...". I can access the other 2 from the 6930 computer without any problem. I have allowed sharing on all computers. When I diagnose from another computer I get a message "Problems found Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource is not responding". When I attempt to diagnose the problem from the 6930's troubleshooting/share files & folders screen I get "Problems found Windows requires more information to diagnose the problem Not fixed"

I'm having some issues on one of our networks. Everyhing was fine until friday when suddenly two of our machines started saying"<WorkgroupName> is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource."When trying to browse the network, I have checked printer and file sharing, even turned it off and changed the workgroup, then turned it back on, firewall is completely disabled, Computer browser service is enabled and started. Even tried a system restore and i get nothing.. Mind you, this isn't a particular computer this PC can't see, its the whole network.12 minutes into a virus scan with Malwarebytes and it has detected nothing.I am out of ideas.Solved. Discovered netbios was disabled.

I have a strange problem that's cropped up. I have a network of 9 computers, all using a workgroup. All worked fine until last night when I hooked a USB drive up to the only laptop in the group. The drive wasn't recognized for some reason (?) but since then my laptop cannot access the workgroup. I don't see how these events can be related, but the timing seems to indicate this.

Here's what I've found:
-error: "FSP is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this resource. Contact the administrator to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is currently unavailable."
-I cannot ping the laptop from any networked workstation
-I cannot ping any networked workstation from the laptop
-All computers can ping the gateway and themselves
-all computers can access the internet
-I can see the laptop in "workgroup computers" on any workstation, but I cannot access it.
-I cannot see any workstations in "workgroup computers" on the laptop.
-I can access to and from the laptop using IP addresses, but not names.

The reason why I need to use names is that I use this network as a render farm and it does not work correctly using the IP addresses.

Firewall/antivirus has been disabled.

OS is a combination of XP Pro, XP Home and Win2K. The laptop is XP Pro ver 2002, SP2.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I have xp pro and am on a peer to peer network with dsl internet, a hub, and a wireless hub. The network is working fine for everyone else.

My laptop was connecting fine yesterday thru the wireless hub. I took it to a restaurant last night and tried to get onto their network but was unable to - their wep key didn't work for me.

Today it is connecting to the internet but not the other computers on the network; can't even see them.

I have norton internet security 2007 and I looked in there to see if the network was specified in the "trusted" screen for firewall configuration and it is.

I unplugged and replugged the wireless router.

I ran a virus scan and am currently running an adaware scan.

I rebooted a couple of times.

Interesting.... my desktop can see the laptop and access files on it. The laptop can't see anyone tho.

Several years ago I set up a wireless WORKGROUP. I spent hours and most of it worked, I was able to get the wireless computers on the net. I had a few other functions working, they could talk to each other, but not to the wired computer; eventually I paid someone to come out and he had the same trouble as I was having so he called someone, and there was one glitch that between the two of them they seemed to be able to fix it. The router at the time was a D-Link. That was many years ago. Since then, I was able to add an additional computer (a Laptop) and TiVo services with no troubles, so this is what was connected to the D-Link:

? 1 computer wirebound to the D-Link router, I'll call this C1
? 1 computer wireless (networked via WORKGROUP through the router's Gateway) - I'll call this C2
? 1 laptop wireless (networked via WORKGROUP through the router's Gateway) - I'll call this LAP
? 2 TiVo wireless (networked via WORKGROUP through the router's Gateway)

I have recently upgraded to VoIP and when trying to use only that router was unable to get the WORKGROUP connections to work at that time - so Linksys had me turn-off the wireless feature. Then I had to piggyback the D-Link so I could still have my WORKGROUP Network set-up. It worked, I could still have all the things connected to the internet that I had before, and I could still share files. Unfortunately, the D-Link has died. :( So...

I have recently set up my student house with ADSL thru an all in one Connexant AMX-CA64E Modem/Router/4port switch, allowing four people to connect to the internet via ethernet. I have managed to setup the network so all nodes can recieve net access using the router as the gateway... However I am having trouble setting up the network itself. What Operating System is each machine using?

I can't say that I like Conexant's idea of using class A addressing for the network, it may end up being confusing. You MUST use a subnet mask of with these 10.X.X.X addresses.

Use either DHCP OR static addresses, not both, on your LAN.

First, make sure that each machine can:
PING itself
PING the router
PING all the other machines on your house network
access the Internet

Then, make sure all machines have installed:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Print Sharing

Configure all machines:
so that they are members of the same workgroup
so that they have unique names
Workgroup and machine names should be 14 characters or less, no spaces or puctuation.
Share at least one folder

Reboot after changes, and allow to sit for 10 minutes or so. All machines should now be visible in Network Neighborhood.

You should be able to connect to any machine, even if it doesn't show in Net Neighborhood, by:
Start > Run > \\"machine name"\"sharename"

When I try to access this workgroup via Windows explorer via
My network places
Entire Network
Microsoft Windows Network

When I double click on MSHOME after 10 or so seconds I get Error message

I am logged on as an administrator.

A similar workgroup on a similar machine is fine.

6. Clear the Network Connection check box for your network.

I was able to print, and then.....

If I try to view workgroup from My Network Places, it beeps.
If I view Sharing and security, and try to share c:
I get an error message an error occurred while trying to share c:. The server service is not started. The shared resource was not created.

I can see all the computers on the network with Norton, but cannot setup Network printers.....

sharing root folder (C:\) is bad idea, for security risk, just share specific folders

start the server service to see if that fixes your problem
start > run > type services.msc
go down list to server open (double click) then click start service, make sure it should be set to startup type: automatic

I'm trying to reach my network disk (a portable disk connected using USB to an ASUS AC2400 router/ ASUS RT-AC87U).

I am able to reach the network disk using other devices (like my smartphone), so it is working properly.

When I try to reach it using my work computer (which is a domain computer), I am unable to connect to the network disk.
I've tried these things already with following result:

When I ping the IP-address of the device or the device name, I get a reply and in case of the device name, I also get the correct ip-address
When activating the media server on the asus router, I am able to reach it (sometimes) on my computer.
I am able to reach other NAS servers (at my parents home, I was able to reach the NAS using the IP-address)
using nbtstat I can see that the device is broadcasting its name
I've tried many other things, but am so far unable to reach this network disk.

In the web user interface of the ASUS router it is called the: 'USB Application - Network Place (Samba) Share / Cloud Disk'
I activated/deactivated following options:

Allow guest login --> NO

Work Group --> workgroup

Enable SMB2 protocol (default: No) --> NO

Simpler share naming (without the disk name) --> YES

Force as Master Browser --> NO
Set as WINS server --> NO
NTFS Sparse Files Support --> Enabled

I've just come home to visit my parents and I'm having a weird problem with the WiFi. My computer connects to the WiFi, and the network status shows as "Internet Access", however, when I open a browser or try to use programs such as Spotify, there is no internet access at all.

It's a VirginMedia Router and my laptop is using Windows 7.
