Issue with Microsoft Security Update

Q: Issue with Microsoft Security Update

My problem is the 3rd post on this thread http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-xp-support/148753-issues-microsoft-security-updates.html

First of all what sort of "update" is it, really. I have followed Microsoft's advice on how to fix this problem, the most helpful part was

"Try to run the program that did not start again. If the program starts and if you do not receive the error message in the "Symptoms of the problem" section, you are finished."

I have update 935448 but I am still getting Illegal system DLL relocation error on calc.exe and when I have tried to install Google chrome. This is no big problem really because I have a physical calculator and I have Firefox but I can see this becoming a bigger problem when I need to install some important software.

I do have Realtek HD audio manager but this is v5.10.0.5694 and runs fine.

To be honest I think this is a update conflict, Do you think it would be a good idea to remove all updates and start again from SP2?

Any other idea's would be great.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Preferred Solution: Issue with Microsoft Security Update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Issue with Microsoft Security Update

The first problem is that you referred us somewhere else to learn about your problem. I am having trouble following the thread you linked to and what you wrote here. I do not see the words you quoted anywhere in the third post that you referred us to. So instead of bouncing us between websites to learn your problem, just write everything we need to know here.

Second, the post you referred us to deals with XP Service Pack 2, and applied more than two years ago. Why aren't you using Service Pack Three?

MSE just had its real time protection turned on, as I apparently did not verify my Windows genuine status, even though I'm positive I did. I didn't see any button to run a check, so I tried to turn on real-time Security Essentials couldn't turn on real time-protection This operation returned because the timeout period expired. Click help for more information about this problem. Error code: 0x800705b4 So I didn't feel like dealing with this, and just decided to do an uninstall/re-install. When I tried THAT (via add/remove programs in control panel), I got this message: The Security Essentials Installation Wizard is missing a filter manager rollup package needed to complete the installation. To continue installing Security Essentials, you must first download the required package. (I click it, and nothing happens) I googled this problem, and found a possible solution on the Microsoft support forums, which was to do a Windows Update. So I try THAT, and even that won't even load, as I get THIS message: The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context. Talk about annoying. Help is appreciated, because I really don't know what to do now!

Microsoft to issue emergency Windows update for processor security bugs
Microsoft is issuing a rare out-of-band security update to supported versions of Windows today. The software update is part of a number of fixes that will protect against a newly-discovered processor bug in Intel, AMD, and ARM chipsets.
The company will issue a Windows update that will be automatically applied to Windows 10 machines at 5PM ET / 2PM PT today.
The update will also be available for older and supported versions of Windows today, but systems running operating systems like Windows 7 or Windows 8 won’t automatically be updated through Windows Update until next Tuesday.

Hi,
Get-MsrcSecurityUpdate does not seem to list some "security only" updates in the xml output.
It does list all the other updates including Monthly rollups. Is there a way to retrieve this?
For example, the following updates are missing from the output when the command
Get-MsrcSecurityUpdate -Year 2017 was executed:

4015548, 4014985,   4014986,   4014987 and 4014988.

I just discovered this problem when Myrti and I were working on some other problems on my computer. I noted that I'd gotten an 'update failed' several times lately. It said 'Some updates could not be installed. The following updates were not installed. MS.NetFramework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for windows 2000, XP, Vista, 2008, Windows7 and Windows Server 2008R2 (KB953297).' The error code was 0X64C.

I checked back in my logs and found that my computer has been attempting this update since October 2009!

When I tried manually at the Microsoft site, it said I needed to upload ActiveXControl, which I did. It still couldn't successfully update that security.

I have the log. Would you like for me to attach? I just did it a few days ago.

Thanks,
Sue Ellen

Hello,

Recently Microsoft has been trying to update my software with a security update

{Security Update for Microsoft Office XP (KB921596)}

Unfortunately something is going wrong and I am told that Microsoft was unable to update the security update.

At the moment when I switch off my PC, the turn off button is showing the multicoloured shield next to it (meaning it will update before switching off)

I think it is trying to update the same security update as above.

The situation has been like this for maybe a fortnight now.

Please could you help me to sort the situation out.

Many thanks

Hello! For about the past two years I've been having troubles with Windows Update, and it's pretty much stopped checking for updates and updating in general. I didn't think much of it, but now I feel like it's affecting MSE.

Recently I had an issue with updating it, so I had to uninstall it via the Microsoft Support website because I couldn't uninstall it normally. But when I triy to reinstall it, it gets to about the point where it seems like it's installing, and then it stops and says there was an error with the installation. I've tried just about every suggestion and troubleshooting that the Microsoft website offers me, but nothing seems to be working.

I've ran Malware Bytes, Windows Defender, TDSSKiller, and even Microsoft Security Scanner; nothing detects any malware or spyware, so I'm getting the feeling that something might be corrupted! I made another post more in depth about it here, but I feel like I might not get any good help.

If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I'd really appreciate it!!

Hello, I previously has Norton on my computer with an expired subscription. A Norton pop up kept appearing, the scan wouldnt run and my laptop kept turning itself off. I uninstalled Norton and the problem with turning off has resolved. I then downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials to use as my virus scanner. It installed OK but would not update. I posted this problem on another forum here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/84452f5d-bde2-46d9-afbe-4c2a582a4e3b and after following the instructions it started working. However when following those steps I noticed my Windows Update will not update, and hasnt done since May! If I click on update the green bar moves but never gets anywhere, ive left it for 15min+ and it just keeps saying its checking for update. Now Security Essentials is doing the same as before, getting halfway through updating and stopping, and when I go to close it its says its not responsing, as does windows updater.

On the last forum it was suggested there may be underlying issues and after googling my problem I came across this forum which I am now going to use from now on. I dont know anything about computers and have no idea how to go about investigating this myself so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this.

Hello all.

SO at first Microsoft Security Essentials seemed like sweet sweet free AV victory. But then I got some weird virus that was blocking the MSE service, but I fixed that and reinstalled and it was working well for a while. Fast forward to today: I can't play League of Legends (PandoMediaBooster cannot connect to the server) and I can't update Starcraft II (it just stays at 0%). I checked my firewall (all the programs required are on the allowed list) however, when I checked MSE's allowed list, there were no programs listed in the allowed or blocked sections. I can't add or remove programs and MSE never notifies me when a program is trying to access my computer. wtf?

I am a sad panda. Please halp.

Every time I do a Microsoft Security Update there is always one that won't install:

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2656353)

Everything else updates just fine. Should I just forget about it? I have XP Professional on a custom desktop. Any suggestions?

Maybe it is because newer ones are already on there so I don't need this.

A:Microsoft Security Update

Is NET Framework 1.1 installed on your system?

I believe that the only systems that now have such...are MCE systems because that version came preinstalled on those systems.

If 1.1 is installed, it's possible that it may be damaged and (thus) preventing the update.

Is that the only known problem that you currently experience?

This is a actually a sub-thread under a separate discussion on the Windows Updates forum.

In connection with an inability to receive and install Vista updates-in-general over the past three days, it seems that I cannot update the definitions specific to Microsoft Security Essentials. The last automatic update of MSE was July 12, and attempting to download virus and spyware definitions right from the MSE panel now fails unconditionally.

Anyone else with this problem, or anyone with experience in doing some sort of 'manual install' to get around what may be a temporary hiccup in Microsoft Updates for Vista?

Running Vista-64 bit on a Dell desktop; using MSE version 4.9.218.0. Thanks!

Hello again eloctrojim. I seem to be the only forum regular who is using MSE 4.9.218.0, and no I do not have this problem - perhaps because my Windows updates for the month of July were all successfully installed on Tuesday, whereas your system is still choking on them.

Try this: set Windows Update to "never check for updates." If you have disabled a Windows service, re-enable it. Restart the PC, then open MSE and try to manually update definitions via its Update tab (not by checking for Windows updates). Assuming this works, it might be a good time to try the solution for Windows updates suggested in your other thread.

Hi all,

I know this is the general discussion, but I cant find my specific problem anywhere else. So, let me spit this out, I have been having a lot of hi-jack issues over the last few months. My lap top is secure an nothing is going to get in, however it is when I log in on to the www, that's where the problem starts.

A good example is that yesterday Microsoft hacked my outlook account, now why would they do that, these are people you trust. I changed my password based on their suggestion, then I could not get in again.

Long story short I managed to change the password (A very complex one) I am getting very good at this lol, but the issue is that I have justifiable proof that its from Redmond. I have their IP.

This evening, i logged into outlook, and the sight said its the wrong password. I use lastpass. so instead of going through the link, I copied the PW and got into the site. Go figure.

I want to report this, but they dont have a complaints department or telephone number. Anything close to what you require... their answer is to change the password. I give up.

Can someone assist?

Its been a couple of days now with lots of views, but no comments.

On my automatic search for updates for Windows Vista, I keep getting a message to install: Security Update For Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181). I install it. Then the next time the search for udates occurs, is says it is available, and to install it again. What is going on? I keep installing it, but it keeps telling me to install it? The update is dated from July or August of 2007 as to when it came out. What is going on here? Should I ignore it or Should I keep installing it every time? Help!!

I reinstalled it and then immediately checked to see if it was actually installed. I checked the update list. It was not there. Then I checked the Uninstall programs list and there it was. Now I am going to see if it is going to cause any problems when the computer next checks for updates. If it does, then I guess I will have to try what "Dialer" has suggested. Wish me luck!! FYI this is on a relatively brand new computer. Bought the dang thing in May 2007. I will check back in and let you know what happens.

Could not find any information about this update, no change-log and no information why the update is "Important".

Since I recently found myself getting updates at Microsoft, I thought I'd take a look at my download history. Starting May 24, 2001, there was a security update for IE 5.5, service pack 1. Failed to install was noted. If I remember correctly, this new (to me) Thinkpad wasn't working and at this time went for repairs and I got it back just before July 4,2001. Starting July 4th through October 29, 2001, there were 51 "failed to install" for this IE 5.5 service pack 1. Then for some reason on Oct.30th it was successfully installed. Is this unusual?

Possibly bug in Microsoft Security Essentials in an update. The left (or right) mouse button take extra click(s) to work. I originally thought it was the mouse going bad, I switched mouse buttons in the control panel the same thing happen to the other button. I disabled real time scan briefly, then it worked a lot better. Anyway to report this bug?

i recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled my OS and then installed Microsoft Security Essentials. Everything was working very well, I was able to install Windows Updates etc, but then started getting the 0x80070002 error when trying to update MSE. I've done searches all over the web and nothing has helped. I did discover that if I turn the "Windows Update" service to either Manual or Automatic, instead of Automatic-Delayed Start it will update fine. However if it's set to Automatic and I reboot the machine it reverts back to Automatic Delayed start. If I change it to manual and then reboot it will stay on manual, however I don't think that's an ideal situation being then Windows Updates don't update automatically.

Does anyone have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Hi I found this on that error You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows Server Update Services
another possibility is to uninstall MSE and reinstall How to manually uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0.1963 if you cannot uninstall it by using the Add or Remove Programs item

hi...
i have microsoft security essentials installed on my machine. But when ever i try to update, it comes up with this error code "0X8024400a" saying that there is some error in the internet settings and MSC could not be updated . What should i do to update my antivirus??
Well there is one more thing. Previously i do not have an internet connection to this computer so i installed updates on some other computer and then manually updated my MSC using those updates. That was done on 29th December 2011, after this MSC updated itself 5 days ago i.e. on 6th January 2012, but since then there is no update at all. I try to update it by clicking on the update button but it comes up with the above code.. Please help me
I also checked Microsoft website for this but the procedure mentioned there did not help me.

Please post some suggestions.

This security update (see below) kept reappearing on my task bar wanting to be installed and I kept installing it. I finally checked and I have it on the list of installed updates a dozen times--but it still keeps appearing on my task bar asking to be installed. It's like a spell gone wrong. How do I stop it and/or get rid of it? I don't even have works 8 on my computer. Thanks, Don.

Hey peeps, just thought i'd give you all a heads up, got a notification from windows update telling me that there are new updates available, these updates are windows live essentials and microsoft security essentials.

These consist of several programs:

Microsoft security essentials is a new program developed by microsoft which takes a new look at windows defender, there's a new, cleaner interface, new icon, and seems pretty fast after the first quick scan... screenshot below:

live essentials is the same live essentials pack you get from the microsoft live site, not much new here, bing bar is included instead of the live search bar, that is all.

Thanks for the update.

MSE gave me a pop-up advising me there was an upgrade and inviting me to download and install it which I did. To be honest, I really didn't pay enough attention to the program (except when I got it a while back and set it up) so I don't really see much of any difference in the looks. I have noticed it does scan a bit quicker though - so an MS update/upgrade that actually improved things for a change.

I downloaded the whole Essentials 2011 Suite about a week ago or so. I like some of the changes and not some of the others. I preferred the Live Toolbar to the Bing toolbar - you could customize it more and could give more space to the search box (which I can't seem to be able to widen and think it can't be done). I also wish there were a way to turn off the alert just because I have pop-ups enabled - it should allow you to disable alerts for the items you choose to enable so if a real alert occurs you can notice it. While I like WLM better than Windows Mail, I'm still having trouble connecting to one of my newsgroups (but otherwise it works fine) - though I rarely use it except for newsgroups as I use Outlook 2007 instead. I'm on the fence about Messenger. It seems to take up too much of the screen now with details I'm not really interested in (but end up reviewing because they're there). I don't really use the other applications but downloaded them anyway so I'd be able to fire them up to help answer questions about them in the forum.

So I was partially scammed. Got a phone call from a person stating he is from Microsoft and a serious threat has been detected in my computer and they will help me fix it. I was suspicious so the guy made me go to my computer, click computer, manage, event viewers, then custom and I see warnings and errors so i started to be worried. He asked access to my computer through Teamviewer again suspicious he makes me go a website enter a number for Microsoft company and I see it listed. Stupidily I let him access. He opens a few windows I see him running CMD and at the end of the CMD where I see all the data running ultra fast I get the message your microsoft licence has expired risk of crash imminent renew so the guy said I have to renew and when he said I will be directed to a payment page I switched off the computer forced from buttom and hanged the phone. I changed my passwords for everything from another computer  just in case (online banking, emails etc...) and after restarting my pc again run all kind of anti viruses. Ad-ware finds issues but after cleaning keep finding the same. Spybot detects 2 Win32.downloader.gen but I keep getting the same threat after cleaning over and over which brings me to Bleepingcomputer website looking for solutions.  I had to uninstall teamviewer. When checking the activity log I saw "he" was connected again without permission. Every time I ended teamviewer in task manager it started over and over so I exited programme and un... Read more

Hi,
For some reason an update from Microsoft: KB954430, is not installing correctly, on my Dell XPS, running XP with sp3.
I keep getting the little yellow shield informing me that there are updates to be installed, which I have done (which should have been done automatically), and which show as installed in my update history at the MS update web site, but which do not show up in the Add/Remove list from the Control Panel.
I have done this a number of times, and each time it says it was successful, but still the little shield comes up telling me there are updates to install, and always it is the same one.
Even now, the shield is there, although I even downloaded the update at a different site, and installed it through an install wizard.
I don't know what to do, but this is getting frustrating.

Coincidentally, at the same time, the program I use to inform me of needed updates (Securian)sp?, was informing me that my anti-virus definitions were needing to be updated, but when I checked on that, I already had the latest available.

I suppose these are connected somehow, but I don't see how.

Any ideas/advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.
Clayton

The following was copied/pasted from http://news.softpedia.com/news/microsoft-releases-another-surprising-windows-xp-security-update-kb982316-515938.shtml
Specifically, this new update is KB982316 and was published by Microsoft for Windows XP systems on May 19 [2017]. Even though no specifics are available, there’s a good chance this update fixes an NSA vulnerability exploited by hackers following the latest leaks from Shadow Brokers, so XP users are recommended to install it as soon as possible.
The update is only 492 KB in size and, according to Microsoft, it fixes a “security issues [that] has been identified and which could allow an authenticated local attacker to compromise your system and gain control over it.”
