I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

OK this just happened 2 days ago, i was going around deleting stuff on my hardrive when i stumbled across a particularly odd named file in the rood directory in my C drive, it was named 1270554452.exe, so i clicked(not double click) on it and then AVG's resident shield poped up and said it detected a Trojan (Trojan Horse DoS.BNW) and then AVG prompted me to restart my computer so i did. Then when my computer came back on, a message popped up saying my computer as infected with a bot from ip something.info.ip. So i was like oh crap, then i downloaded TrendMicro RUBotted, and sure enough, it confirmed my fears, i am botted...maby

So first things first...WHAT DO I DO?! Edit:I have done Many full system scans with many different tools

Hi thanks for any help in advance. Here is what I think has happened to my (no brand name) Windows XP pro version 2002 service pack 3 32 bit system with an Intel 3.2ghz processor. I got what I think was the Windows Recovery virus two months ago and thought I removed it with system restore. I started the computer up earlier this week and my home screen was blank. The startup menu was also blank except for the log off and turn off computer buttons. These two buttons were the only functions I could use. I rebooted with a Microsoft boot virus scan (MPAM-FE) cd I downloaded off of Microsoft?s website. Unfortunately I did not save the log from this virus scan because it discovered around 12 different malware programs running. Next I tried to follow the remove Windows Recovery thread by downloading RKILL which brought back some functions. Then I ran the Malwarebites scan which I will post below and the Unhide program. After the restart the virus took over again and I had to run Rkill and the Malwarebites scan again. This is where I am stuck. Every time I restart after the scan the same malware tries to hide functions. Also just a few other notes I have a huge number of temporary files which I assume are the hidden folders and I?ve noticed a large number of explorer.exe processes running in task manager before I run Rkill each time I restart. Below I will paste the Malwarebytes scan reports and the DDS text report. I will attach the other DDS log and the GMER log. I am pretty ignoran... Read more

A:BSOD maby 3 times a day. Comes usually when installing or in internet

Hi and welcome to the forums.

It seems Avast anti virus is causing BSODs for you.
Uninstall Avast anti virus completely using the Avast! Removal Tool and then restart the computer.

We recommend using Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows along with Malware Bytes.

Also, run System File Checker to verify/repair the integrity of system files.

Did anyone ever hear of this? How can I stop this and make the program with the selected file type start automatically in front?

Any suggestions welcomed! Thanks.

Can Explorer in Vista be configured so that your selected menu preferences remain fixed?

In the right pane, I set 'Name', 'Size', 'Folder Path', 'Type', and 'Date Modified', using the 'Details' vew. I then clicked Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> selected my preferences (e.g., Show hidden files..., etc.) -> Apply to Folders -> Yes -> OK.

Despite these steps, after my system is awakened from sleep or rebooted, I get the default 'Artist', 'Genre', 'Rating', etc. in the right pane menu, even after searching for a non-media file, like a Word document. Microsoft seems bent on displaying multimedia file info. Surely there is some way to manage your preferences in Explorer. Has anybody been able to outwit Microsoft in this matter?

A:Selected menu items in Explorer won't stay + Explorer locking video files

Is there a way to stop Vista, especially Win Explorer, from locking video files. What a nuisance!

If I play a video file then decide to rename or delete it--even after exiting the software used to play the video--I often get the message that the file is still in use. Rubbish! The app is not in use as evidenced in Task Manager. Freeware Lock Hunter works most of the time in such instances, but I'm wondering if there is some registry key that could be changed to let me use my PC without having to contend with this kind of witless engineering.

When you see the black screen, open the Task Manager. Select File / New Task (Run...), type  explorer.exe  and click OK.
If the Desktop appears, perform the following.
1. Click Start and type regedit.exe in the search box. In the results, right click regedit.exe and select the Run As Administrator

Hello everyone and thank you for participating in this wonderful site.

My computer is a Pentium 4, 2.80 GHz, Running Windows XP Proffessional Version 2002 Service Pack 2.
The problem I'm writing about has been there for about a year. All in all it's the same prolem ever since, but every once in a while some detail changes, like a new error message.
Every about 5-15 minutes the Start Menu Taskbar and the desktop icons disappear (Explorer crushes). Most of the times they reappear shortly after, but sometimes they don't, and then I use task manager to run explorer and then they reappear. Yet, sometimes the computer stucks altogether, and I have to restart. In addition to that, many popups open when I surfe the web using Internet Explorer. The popup changes every few days, but in between it's always the same one.
Another point is that while the crushing of explorer can occur anytime, it most often occurs while I open or close Internet Explorer windows.

Sometimes I get an error message, and as I said, they change from time to time. But still, here are 2:

rundll32.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x74725956" referenced memory at "0x00a10004". The memory could not be "read".

I was told to also post this iunder this category.

I'm about to tear out my hair. First Windows Explorer keeps stopping, searches for solution then restarts. About the time this problem, I noticed that Windows Explorer will change the original creation date on some of my files. It might be all files in folder or just certain types. I've yet to make a connection with when this is happening or what is causing it. Not necessarily when Windows Explorer stops. It's difficult when you can't tell which is the oldest/newest file in a folder.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, which I keep updated, McAfee, AntiMalware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware, also all updated.

I'm begging! Can someone help me please?

Because of this I cannot access my C: drive or my cd drive or anything through Windows explorer.

If I try to right click and open any of these it brings it up in Ulead photo explorer.

About a week ago, I turned on my laptop to find that Internet Explorer was freezing and crashing. When it crashed, I wouldn't get the normal Windows error reporting message, but instead Windows Explorer froze and I was forced to restart. When I restarted -- stupidly, more than 10 times in 2 hours -- the first few times, a few ad windows and anti-virus downloader screens popped up. I scanned with Housecall, and an infection with Mal-vundo came up that it couldn't repair. I downloaded SpyBot, AdAware, and AVG free, and not much popped up that I knew how to fix other than a dat file called __c001BA5E, and a few others. I tried to delete these on reboot, and it seemed to work for awhile. Soon enough, though, both explorers were crashing again. I've tried to avoid rebooting, but I can't help it. Hey guys, thanks for viewing my post... This has been going on for about 2 weeks now and I can't figure out the cause...

Every time I open "My Computer" or anything with windows explorer, everything is fine for a few seconds... then starts to slow... then explorer completely locks up and crashes without an error message... screen shows only the wallpaper for a few minutes... then explorer starts back up, icons come back, etc and all is normal again.

This only seems to happen when utilizing Windows Explorer. I've tried to change the settings on the automatic thumbnail view thinking THAT was the problem, but it always crashes before I can go in there. (Plus I haven't changed settings in that area any time recently, and I do a lot of graphics so a thumbnail preview is a must)

I assume this is just a dumb XP problem, but searching for it with terms like "windows explorer crashes" etc comes up with only Internet Explorer results... I have 1.5g of ram and a decent processor in my HP Pavilion a535w... and only since a few weeks ago have I had any problems like this. NEED HELP!

Also, ever since about a month after getting a new graphics card... sometimes it takes 1-5 tries to get my computer to boot if just recently shut off or restarted. The computer appears to come on, but it doesn't make any loading clicks, and the monitor won't turn on.

I don't think they're related, but both are equally annoying.

I have an odd bug cropping up on multiple machines lately with XP Pro SP2. I've yet to find any other instances on the net, but I'm not exactly sure of what to search for. I open Windows Explorer and leave it open. If anything happens on the Desktop (say a file is deleted, created, name changed, anything) the Windows Explorer will list Multiple "Desktops" at the top of the list on the left pane.

Now these "Desktops" are actual folders that exist on my Desktop and I can click on them and see the contents of each folder, and in the address bar the real folder name is shown, but for some reason Windows Explorer displays them as "Desktop" instead of the real folder name in the left pane.

Also when this happens I can no longer navigate the folder tree properly. Plus signs to expand a tree no longer work, when I double click on a subfolder to open it, it doesn't refresh the left pane. I can close out Windows Explorer and reopen and all is well again until the next change. This is a very very frustrating bug and even happens on clean installs. Has anyone else had experience with this bug or have any clues what might be causing it? Thanks

BTW, this clean install was using nLite to slipstream SP2 and automate the install. The only other options I used was disabling services that I always disable anyway such as the firewall, indexing, etc...

Hello, I really hope one of you can help...

My desktop PC has suddenly developed a niggling little problem that means it is all but useless now. When opening most programs, IE, Windows Explorer and Opera the screen gets caught in a juddering motion that seems to act like the software is switching between Restore, Full Screen and Maximize functions, at the rate of about 6 switches a second. As you can probably imagine, this means the computer is more or less useless, and it's getting very frustrating. I've called the shop where we bought it, and got the usual "It's not our problem, try system restore, or restore factory settings". Tried system restore about 3 days ago, and no matter where I try to restore to it's having none of it, and then I got stop in a lovely "Packard Bell recovery program (which includes the system restore program)" loop, that stops actually being able to boot into Windows as it goes on a restarting loop, again, and again and again, until all of a sudden it'll boot. For this reason, System Restore is now switched off so I can continue getting into Windows. Programs not affected are Media Player, Photoshop, Outlook and RealPlayer plus others.

I assume this is a software issue, but I would really like to be able to sort this without having to wipe the whole computer.... Please can anybody help!

Dear Tech guys,
I badly need your support. Day before yesterday (01-Aug-06) night I upgraded the yahoo toolbar and used their norton anti spy to scan. Then I shut down the system and started to work the next day. Every thing is perfectly ok except for one thing. In Windows Explorer, on any folder or drive if I double click or open I get a crash. If I do explore then there is no problem.

Below is the dialog that comes whenever we double click or open (for eg: on C:\ or any folder in the left side pane of the windows explorer. If I just keep expanding the + of the tree no problem, only on clicking the item to open the following error occurs.)

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

program: C:\Windows\Explorer.exe

This Application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I am running on Windows XP SP 2. I dont have google toolbar. I have yahoo tool bar installed. I have tried uninstalling it and installing it again and other combinations as well.

I have also tried sfc /scannow as well. It did not work.

It doesnt look like any adware or spyware (yahoo's norton spyware had done a complete run and no problems in the system as reported by them).

What should I do now to get back to normal operation of windows explorer.

Thanks and Regards,
Naga Kumar S

A:Windows Explorer Runtime Error (not related to Internet Explorer)

I would un-install the Yahoo Toolbar and then put Google Toolbar in, Then I would try to download .NET framework 2.0

and install it. If it tells you that you already have it re-install it anyway.

We have started seeing this issue with our new deployments of Windows 8.1 - we have around 7 drive mappings pointing to a n EMC NAS (VNX7600) and although I can access all drive4s if I drop to the command prompt -windows explorer FAILS to display all mapped
drives. We see this issue over the VPN which would indicate this issue is somewhat related to network latency and Windows Explorer trying to enumerate and display all pertinent info such as free/used disk space.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hello Everyone.

I use Windows 8.1.

Until few days ago, everything was working fine. No idea what happened but whenever I open the File Explorer/Windows Explorer, it always opens minimized. Earlier I just needed to maximize it and close it so that when the next time I open it, it opens maximized. But when I do that now, it still opens minimized.

Not just that. I like to have my files and folders view to be as "large icons". But, its all in "details" view now. Earlier if something like this happened, I would change it once to "large icons" and it remained intact upon my viewing next time. However, it doesn't happen now. Inspite of changing the view settings to "large icons", they still open "details" view.

Any idea, how to solve both the issues? It would be very helpful.

A:Windows Explorer/File Explorer Always Opens Minimized

Most icons can be right-clicked, choose Properties and on the Shortcut tab click Run and change from Normal Window to Minimized or to Maximized. Yours may be set for Minimized.

The windows explorer command (not explorer.exe) works from the quick launch tool bar but does not work from the MS Office tool bar; the error message is 'there was a problem sending the command to the program'. Previously, it worked from this tool bar, and then stopped working. All other commands from this tool bar including explorer.exe work. However, Explorer.exe starts with 'My documents and one has then to get to c:\ after expanding 'my computer'. Explorer.scf works when it is double clicked in the folder in which the buttons of the MSOffice tool bar are stored.

I would like to know why explorer.scf does not work from the MSOffice tool bar, and what can be done to fix this; what does the extension *.scf mean?

Is there a way that one can change the position of folders in the Windows explorer? e.g. to have 'My Computer' rather than my documents on the top?

Thank you,

I am unable to remove a pesky taskbar entitled "Search-Explorer" on my Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.2600 browser. Even when I unclick it under View Toolbars or by right-clicking, it comes back each time I open the browser. I downloaded PopUpCop recently, and it is on my taskbar at the top of the page. This program/bar seems linked somehow to that program.

Is there a place to go to delete, eradicate, in a word GET RID OF, that "Search-Explorer" taskbar??

Hey, I am having problems with my other computer suddenly closing both Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer applications, such as Control Panel, My Computer, etc...(Windows XP Home Edition)
When i click on either one, lets say the my computer icon, a pop up of the my computer folder thing flashes for a split second then disappears, the computer freezes for about a second, shows only the desktop, then a few seconds later the icons start appearing on my desktop and my start taskbar comes back. The screen is back to normal with no lag, but the my computer pop up is no longer there. The same thing happens with internet explorer, but it just happens alot quicker.
Does anyone know what could possibly be the problem of this, and maybe how to fix it? Thank You in advance.

there's this one thing I find windows explorer REALLY ANNOYING.

if I ever type the folder address wrong (missing a colon when my hands got sloppy) in the address bar, windows explorer automatically TURNS INTO internet explorer mode and does online search.

I don't even use IE any more except for automatic update. I wish there's a way windows explorer wouldn't automatically do it when I type the wrong folder.

I had the access disabled for internet explorer in the add/remove program, but it doesn't do jack to windows explorer from doing it

I have been troubleshooting explorer.exe crashes for the last few weeks.  I have read many of the other threads on explorer.exe crashes and tried most of the different troubleshooting steps, with no success.  So hoping someone here might be able
to assist.  Running Win 7 Pro SP1 x64.  Windows Explorer crashes regularly, usually as a result of double-clicking My Computer or other Folder shortcuts located on my desktop.  I can report the following:

-When reviewing the crash reports in AppCrashView or via Action Center, I see that Fault Module Name is StackHash_xxxx (where xxxx is a417, fa09, d638, 3d5b, 7f3f, c1c9, e2b0)
-Tested RAM modules using MemTest86 - PASS.
-Ran virus and malware scans - CLEAN.
-Ran SFC - NO integrity violations.
-Ran chkdsk /f - NO problems
-When booting in Safe Mode, the problem does NOT occur.
-When doing a Clean boot (with only MS services loaded) or a Diagnostic startup, the problem still occurs.
-Ran ShellExView and disabled all non-MS extensions, problem still occurs.
-Turned off Thumbnails, problem still occurs.
-Installed HotFixes KB2494427 & KB2638018, problem still occurs.
-Running Webroot AV.  Uninstalled and problem still occurs.
-System Restore is not an option as the restore points don't go back far enough.
-Enabled CrashDumps for explorer.exe and ran dumpchk on them, but don't know how to read them.

Hey there..

I have recently upgraded to windows 8 pro and since then my taskbar frequently crash's.. Under the eventlog it tells me that it is due to an ntdll.ddl file.. I have noticed that the crash usually happens when i have an open folder..

After looking at different forums, the faulting ntdll.dll could be caused by a faulting driver.. My laptop has switchable graphics and i am using a third party driver, could this be the problem? If not, anybody have an idea?

I have attached system info in zip.

A:Explorer.exe / ntdll.dll crash.. Explorer closes and reloads..

Yes third party drivers on switchable graphics have been a big problem, try using the drivers from the manufacturer.

this is my godmother's system so for the most part i've had to peice together the exact issues but from what she's told me internet explorer and windows explorer crashes constantly while she is online gaming (e.g. pogo.com) and i have noticed on a previous visit that her homepage was indeed changed without her doing so.... now she has said that is has happened before... another thing is that the pc is running slow over all but imo i don't really see it.... i have so far run the online scans as well as her av that runs daily (avast)... also she has run spyware doctor and ccleaner as well as reg mechanic.... now the only firewall she had which is listed in one of these logs, was the windows firewall, i installed comodo personal firewall right after the scans were done.... she has a habit of running 2 av's at one time (which was the case up til today) and i have put a stop to this however i'm sure there's bits and peices left on her system from norton, avg and trend micro pc cillin..... if you have any advice where to look to get these fully off that would be greatly appreciated but not the main concern right now....

i have gone online and gotten instructions on how to remove some of the tracking cookies that panda pointed out... those would be Zedo, Mediaplex, Casalemedia and Fastclick... but i have not done anything to remove them yet, i thought i'd talk to you guys first....

Hi all,

I really hope someone can help me out here, as this is my work box, and it will take me about a week to get everything re-installed and configured if I have to format :-(

The problem is that if I try to open windows explorer or internet explorer, they immediately crash. I suspect that this is due to spyware / virus.

I have since upgraded from service pack 2 - 3 and run scans with McAfee, Avast and SpyHunter3. Can't find anything ...
All open / save dialog boxes work fine though ... which is luckily the only way i can work now ... through firefox

Hi, I've just updated to win10 build 1607 (or whatever the latest number is) this morning and when I completed the update, I noticed the task bar constantly refreshing every 3-5 seconds. I believe the issue to be related to Daemon tools pro which keeps popping up a message saying the program is not compatible with this version of Windows. Unfortunately, when I try to uninstall it through add/remove programs in safe mode, explorer crashes and I'm unable to do so.

Is there any way to disable Daemon tools to see if it is causing my issue? I can open control panel in safe mode, but again I can't uninstall it. I can open explorer in regular mode but as soon as I right click or try to change directories, it freezes on me.

Hey there, I've encountered the following behaviour:

I regularly back up fairly large graphic data to my 1TB One drive on a Win 8.1 AMD/GeForce machine.
As I drag&drop files into the respective folders on the sidebar, the whole system becomes wobbly, which, I guess, is in connection to the synch process. Trying to rename folders in the sidebar becomes close to impossible, I have to do it in the main windo, and even then it often doesn't work, and after several tries explorer hangs. It then displays black blocks i the GUI elements, everything looks like the GUI underlying the WIN 8.1 look wants to emerge: the font changes to something Win 3.11ish, folder content isn't being displayed, or only on hover, and at last I have to reboot to get it working again. This is the only time this happens - in Explorer. I can have it on computing for days, do heavy handed Photoshopping, no problems at all.

It's a persistent problem I've dealt with through many system updates and graphic driver updates, reinstalling drivers etc. It must be an Explorer bug.

Any pointers, anyone? Thanks
