Win2k Server Issue

Q: Win2k Server Issue

Not too sure if I should be posting a server issue but any advice is good so here is my issue. I have a 2K server and it seems to start up slow. Takes about 5 minutes. Where before t was like 2 minutes.

- WIN2K Server
- Always do Windows updates ( the important ones )
- It's an Intel P4 | 1 gig of ram | 2.4 Ghz
- Sometimes it take long to install a 2 megs update. I always run registry fixers and it works.
- Mcafee scan every Saturday
- Used HJT posted here http://forums.techguy.org/t390197.html
- Use adaware | spybot |crapcleaner | MS Anti spyware | CW Sheedder

I'm going to do more during the week but anyone have more advice they can give

Preferred Solution: Win2k Server Issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have win2k server running with all service packs using two 60 gig hds on a raid 1 using a promise tx2 card. I was trying to add a second drive for a database using a sata tx2 raid 0 and as soon as i try to add the second card and bootup it does nothing.. I removed the first raid card and used a win98 boot disk and ran fdisk on the new drive and then tried adding the first card back and booting but it does nothing.. So next I removed hds from both cards and just left the cards in to see if that was the issue and when both cards are in it does nothing but when either is taken out it will atleast boot up with the 98 boot disk. Im thinking maybe an irq conflict? These are both pci raid cards

I have one PC setup with Win2K Professional. It is used as a game server, sharing the cable modem, file server, and web server. I am replacing it with another PC that has Win2K Server. I have saved all the security updates from the old pc (in the Q######_whatever.exe format). Should I apply these updates to the new PC? I have about 30 of these updates. I've went to the Windows update site and got all the critical updates, but I know there are other bugs out there and I'd like to have this PC as secure as possible.

Thanks in advance!

hi guys!
I just installed Windows 2000 Advance Server recently to a Compaq Proliant ML530 server and found out that the license for this server is more expensive than Windows Server 2003 Standard. The SmartStart CD of the compaq does not support windows server 2003 and I don't want to manually re-configure everything and start all over again. Does Win2K A.S. support Windows Server 2003 upgrade?

The Samba Sever is for file sharing. You did not state the OS on the new PC, but if it's truley a
Samba Sever, it's likely to be some distro of Linux.
You can google for Linix domain controller and find a flock of articles like this

doing some research on PDC Migration may save you a lot of time and effort.

i am just messing about experimenting on a few things at home and wondered if someone could give me some pointers on the folowing:
I have myself a win2k server that is connected to the internet using a cable modem connected using a ethernet net card.
I also have a 98 machine networked to the server using another ethernet net card in a workgroup
I want to use the server as a proxy server so i can access the internet from the 98 machine
i have tried a few diffrent things to get this working but usually end up losing all communication with the 98 pc
from what i can gather it involves setting up tings with DNS, and sharing the connection to the internet, but i am not getting to far at the mo.
can anyone point me in the right direction or better tell me how to do it?

Hi all..
Ok quick question...basically I'm learning win2kserver at the mo and a bit confused about a few issues.
Namely..if the server is NOT running terminal services, am I correct in assuming that each application available to a user must be installed on EACH workstation on the network. So say for instance theres 35 machines, all will need to have Office installed, all will have to have Dreamweaver installed etc. Then depending upon the permissions and policies I set to users and groups dictates who has access to those applications?
Further more. All user files will be saved to the server. Where do I add the file path back to the server's my docs.
And finally, if the server is running Active Directory, and the workstations run XP how do I get the client work stations to talk to active directory so that any user can log on and utilise the given permissions I have set for him or her.

Thanks ALL

I have a "practice" network setup with Windows 2000 SBS as my server and a Win2k and XP machines as my clients. I am trying to dial in to the server using RAS with a Dial up connection on the XP machine but for some reason I am able to connect and stay connected but I am unable to browse any of the network resources.

This connection worked fine until after I installed SP3, some hot fixes and ISA SP1. Unfortunately I loaded all my updates at one time without testing between them so I am not sure which one caused the problem.

Any ideas of what I should be checking. This network is for MCSE study so it is good practice but this has become so aggravating that I am about to fix my the problem with a hammer

I'm am running Windows 2K server within a SOHO style network. I getting ready to set up a DSL router/modem attached to a separate NIC on my server. I'm wondering the best way to set this up so that I can both share the internet connection, protect my workstations, and provide VPN to outside connections.

I've read about the setup of Internet Connection Server with NAT or how to setup VPN but have gotten mixed results on the possibility to run both on the same server.

Is this possible? If not, how do I setup both share the internet connection through the server and router and setup a VPN?

A:Win2K Server with NAT and VPN?

You'll have to use Routing And Remote Access. Your server will be cofigured as a LAN and Demand-DialUp router and a Remote Access Server.

You'll have two Nic cards in your server, one for the DSL connection, the other for the LAN. The DSL connection will need a static IP address to be an effective VPN solution. One will be configured as a local area connection, the other as the outside connection. In RRAS you configure the Interfaces, Ports and Remote Access Policies.

This is a quick rundown, Microsoft has several papers on it, try searching the Microsoft Technet site for VPN Deployment.

In our small network, there are a couple of servers running WIN2K advanced server.
One of these has developed a problem where, if on another machine, we go thru MY NETWORK PLACES - entire network - ETC to the list of computers and try to connect to that server, we get the error " \\SERVER is not accessible. The server is not configured for transactions" If any other machine had a mapped network drive to the server, the connection still works.
This has started only in the last few days and seems to affect only this one server.

Network is 10-WIN2K machines and 2-WIN2K advanced servers in a workgroup - no domain running thru 2 switches.

Anyone have a clue to the solution?

Hello all...

I have a stupid question that I can't find an answer to on MS website. I have an NT 4 domain, and I want to add a Win2k member server to it. All this server will do is run SQL and IIS so that we can prototype an intranet.

Can I add the Win2k server to my NT domain without screwing up my NT network? Is there anything I need to worry about/be careful when I do this? Or should I make the Win2k box a PDC in its own domain and set up a trust?

Upgrading my whole network to Win2k is not an option right now.

Thanks in advance!

A:Add Win2k server to NT domain

Yes you can add a Windows 2000 Member server to an NT domain. Don't bother trying to setup Active directory though. It will not work in that situation.

Since a member server does not do authentication, it will not affect the structure of the NT domain.

I have a new server that I installed Windows 2000 server on. I have been trying to add a user "tech" to the administrator group. This works fine for the most part. Let me start from the beginning. This new server is taking the place of an old one. The old one has a static IP address which the new one will have to use once it is online. The new server will also have the same name as the old one. So, in order to get the new server online, I have to add it to our companies domain. Once the new server is up, I go in and try to add the user "tech" to the administrator group by going to control panel, admin tools, computer management, local users and groups. I add "tech" user to users, then go into groups, administrator, I choose our companies domain and choose the user "tech" from the list. I click ok. The name then shows up as domain name\tech (s-1-5-21-208981-4041-350513269-328166375-133557). Now, when this user is added I am not logged into the domain. I then reboot after the user is added and try to log into the domain as "tech", but receive the error that the system cannot log you on because the user is not found. So, I log back onto the local machine and go back to the admin tools and look at the user and it is now listed as just the numbers I listed above. If I disjoin the computer from the domain and readd it, I can then add the user "tech" and it shows up as domain name\tech and I am then able to log into the doma... Read more

I have a server, Win2k w/sp3. Last week it began to act flakey, just dropping network connections, slowness, etc..

I rebooted the server, and it took forever for the server to come backup. I thought it was a fluke, and rebooted again. Same results.

I noticed once it came up that the network icons were not in the bottom right corner, so I tried to go to network properties to view the nic cards, and the system didn't respond. This happens from network neighborhood, start control panel networking.... or from start settings network and dialup...

Also, if I attempt to stop or start any service, it hangs and gives me an error 1053 service timed out.

This is the only error that it replys with. Nothing in the event log.

First the good news:

I have three computers on this network, 2 Win2k worksatations and a Win2k server. Also, there is a 4 port Linksys router between the cable modem and the rest of the computers.

All computers are running TCP/IP with Obtain IP address automatically enabled. All computers can access the Internet and the router sees all three computers. It has also assigned them internal IP addresses ( /101 / 102).

From the server I can ping all three addresses and get positive results. I can also search for the computers and find them, albeit not the same way for both. A simple search shows one and I need to use the *.* to find the other.

Now the bad news:

Neither workstation sees the server, even with a ping. And when I go to the properties (right click My Computer/Network ID/ properties) I am not able to join to the domain. It says the Network Path is not valid. And yes, I've added the computers to my server.

What might I be missing? Help please

I started with eight NT4 servers and 80+ Win98/2k workstations. I had to upgrade two of the servers to Win2k Server. We had two Win98 and one WinME laptops that logged into the NT4 Ras server, which was rebuilt as a W2k box.

We have static IP addresses. I set a range of six DHCP addresses on the NT server (I believe that is the minimun you can have to run RAS), and kept the same when I rebuilt it as a W2k server.

All three laptops could RAS in before, but now only one of the Win98 laptops can. When I run Winipcfg on the laptops, I get the same address for the gateway as I get for the (DHCP) IP address.

Server example:-
IP addr: 370.20.213.66
Gateway: 370.20.213.65
DHCP Range: 370.20.213.70 - 370.20.213.75

Laptop #1 Example:-
IP addr: 370.20.213.70
Gateway: 370.20.213.70

Laptop #2 Example:-
IP addr: 370.20.213.71
Gateway: 370.20.213.71

I think our subnet mask should actually be, but I wanted to shorten the range, as it's a bog corporation. Corp. Techs are useless.

Welcome to TechSpot

The only way to get them to work as you want, is to uninstall W2K Server, then reinstall W98 in partition C, nowhere else.
W2K can be installed later, but it must have its own partition, e.g. D.
Upon installation, W2K will automatically create the boot-menu from which you can choose your OS at startup

Installation sequence is: W95/W98/(NT)/W2K/ME/XP were W95 or W98 MUST be in partition C.

Hi guys,
We have about 50 PCs on our network and I want to set up a print server. Does anyone see anything wrong with setting up one of the DC's as a print server as well? Approx 30 of those PCs are in student labs, so not all of them are being used at the same time. So definitely no where near 50 people printing and logging on at the same time.

Whatcha think??

A:Win2k Print Server on DC??

Technically there is nothing wrong with it as long as you take into account that it can use a lot of disk space (depends on where the main spooling occurs, but even queues use HD space) and of course that all this traffic can really slow the DC down.....

if it hosts a domain u will need to specify a ip address for the xp machine that falls within the same subnet of the server

Okay, I finally got the server set-up. Now I am attempting to change all my workstations, to make them logon the domain instead of the workgroup.

The connection appears to be intermittant at best. When I tell the workstation to use our domain, I receive a welcome message (thats good). But, within minutes, I lose the connection to the server. While transferring data, I received the error message: "the session has expired". I've continuously ping the server from the workstaion (and vice versa), and had no problems. I beleive this may be a problem with my settings, but I don't know what to change.

I am in the process of migrating from a Netware server to a Windows server. I have had succes migrating files and programs (relatively easy). The biggest problem I've had is moving printers. I have one set of seven printers which have printed fine under the Novell NDS protocol for many years. My first thought was to install them on the Windows server and use those queues. I've had serious problems with that ranging from slow data transfer to jobs restarting randomly to jobs not starting at all. I have also tried setting up a Linux box dedicated to managing print queues, but have had similar problems. I thought maybe it was a hardware issue, but the Novell Print queues are still working like normal. I've been dealing with this for a while and am open to any suggestions as long as they involve clearing my network of IPX. Thanks.

I moved a Win2K machine from a domain to a workgroup which uses a Linksys cable router as its DHCP server. I'm having trouble making the machine to pick up the new DHCP server. It thinks it cannot locate the DHCP service so it keeps getting assigned the APIPA (169.254.x.x) address. BTW, back in the domain, this machine was assigned a static IP address through client reservation because it was running a service. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks.

A:Help Win2K Pro to find new DHCP server

Have you changed all the domain settings so that its not still looking for the domain when it starts up? If the machine's name is part of a FQDN get rid of the extensions so that it has an "old fashioned" single name.

Also clear out all of the settings for DNS that may have been set, make them all blank in case the system is trying to find it that way.

Remove any other network protocols that are installed except TCP/IP.

Hey guys, I have 2 drives that I want to use as system drives, with 1 always on, and the other having an IDENTICAL configuration...but I don't want raid 1 or anything..I just want to be able to shut the comp down, change the boot order, and boot up cleannly.....well ya know.....low down time.....and since powerquest drive image doesn't work for Win2k Server, I was wondering what my options were for cloning of systems on the same hardware config with Win2k Server.

A:cloning win2k Server config

You really need PowerQuest V2i Protector Server Edition
