I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hy!I've used my Thinkpad T420 battery charge mode with custom settings: Start charging when below 95% and Stop charging at 99%. Because the battery effectively has never charged full, it cause sudden capacity decreases (for example from 30% discharging to 7%). I got bored to this and changed to automatically optimize battery lifespan. I noticed that every full charge the "Full charge capacity" value decreases. I have charged it 5 times after this settings, and the remaining capacity looks like this: 57.10Wh, 57.05Wh, 57.00Wh, 56.95Wh, 56.85Wh. Is it normal? Is it possible that this setting will kill my battery?

I upgraded to Win 10 via Windows update.  All went well, everything worked fine, but I did later find out that Lenovo isn't supporting T420 with driver updates for Win 10.  While Windows 10 was still installed, I looked at the driver support page for the T420, Win 10 is not listed as an option in the drop down of OSs.  Accepting this, and not wanting to run into problems later down the road with future Win 10 updates, I rolled back to Win 7Pro.  Now I don't think I have a straight answer on whether the T420 actually is supported under Win 10 or not.  The first thing I did after rolling back was to go to the Lenovo driver support page.  Now it shows windows 10 in the drop down as a supported OS.  What's up with that?  I've looked in the forums and elswhere online and every indication is that the T320 is not officually supported.  Lenovo does not list it as supported.  But yet now Windows 10 drivers are listed for the T420, but only when I'm running Windows 7Pro, not when I'm running Windows 10.  I'm assuming that the website is autodetecting my current OS.  I can't make heads or tails of it.  I'd like to go back to Windows 10, but given the confilcing info from Lenovo...Anyone have any suggestions.

The drivers should be available at the EOL site:

https://download.lenovo.com/eol/index.html

Scratch that.  They're still available on the regular support site:

Hi Forgany,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

What you can do is uninstall all the Bluetooth application and drivers which you have installed currently and then download and install ThinkVantage system update utility. After the installation restart the system and run the application, this will search for the entire required latest driver for your system.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Hello, all.My T420 audio system has worked perfectly for years. But, starting in January 2018 the microphone mutes itself, no matter what I do with its settings. Sometimes the muting happens in a few seconds, sometimes after a few minutes. I can watch it happen in the microphone levels window. This is especially aggravating since I'm a software engineer used to fixing bugs. (Yes, I've watched the YouTube videos about this problem, to no avail.) Anybody have a fix for this?Cheers,Dave

Something absolubtely bizarre is happening with my mouse, and despite my efforts, I can't find any posts on google that match my issue.

About a month ago I spilled some coffee on my laptop. The laptop's built in mouse buttons stopped working shortly afterwards. I took my computer into the repair shop and had them install a brand new touchpad and mouse button set. Everything worked fine up until a couple of days ago.

First, my left click stopped working (on the laptop track pad). The next day, the right click stopped working. I could still left click using the touch pad and right click via Shift + F10. The following day I could no longer left click using the touchpad. I brought home a USB mouse today and plugged it in. The USB mouse worked great for a couple of hours, and then started failing. It will select some objects, and not others. It will left click for a few minutes, and then stop working all together. It will allow me to open new tabs in a brower, but not select other open tabs or the bar where you enter web addresses. It won't select anything off the task bar, including the windows start menu.

So far, I have uninstalled the computer's mouse drivers and re-installed them. I've rebooted several times. I've tried turning on the functionality that allows you to use your keyboard as a mouse, but that didn't work. I've tried different USB ports for the external mouse. I downloaded Lenovo's Solution Center tool and analyzed a... Read more

I just bought a refurbished ThinkPad T420. A friend of mine said it had a good spec so I was looking forward to having a play around. Right from the minute I switched it on there was a problem. The touchpad and mouse are not working. The only way to use the mouse is via the track point (is that the right term?) and I hate it! It's way too fiddly. So I tried fn and F8... it doesn't work. I've tried rebooting and enabling the touchpad in the BIOS it doesn't work. I've deleted drivers. Still nothing. I've installed new drivers. Many tutorials say you can fix it using device manager, mouse etc. But the tab the recommend you choose is not there. I installed new drivers from synaptics and it says there is no synsptics device found. I am honestly going insane! Something that should be so simple and it's so awkward! Forgive me because I'm half asleep but I should mention when I first tried to fix it the tab in mouse properties that everyone says I should use (ultra something) well it was there. But when I tried to click any of the options on that tab I was kicked out and got an error messsge. Now that tab no longer appears. It's running on windows 10. I'm ready for launching it out the window. Help!

My laptop LCD has been out for awhile and I've been using with an external monitor, but I decided to fix the LCD so I ordered a new LCD screen for it. The lcd screen arrives, install it and picture still doesn't show up. I then thought maybe I just had a bad cable from motherboard to LCD so I replaced that.. still no luck.

I can see a faint image in the background, but it's very dark. Same with my original screen.

What's odd is before my original laptop would show a just scrambled picture of black and white-- which is why I originally thought it was LCD.

What would the next step be? To order a inverter? Do the symptoms above sound like it's a bad inverter?

For a few years I have been working with an HP Elitebook 8460p to which I connected an external drive, a Western Digital Element 2042. Working just fine. A few months ago I purchased a Thinkpad T420 and I thought that connecting the external drive would be a piece of cake but unfortunately no. So far I have been been enable to do so and I can't figure out why. When booting the drive doesn't show up in the drive's list.
I have been trying just about each port on my Thinkpad and none worked, the actual cable and port seem to work as the light at the back of the drive are on.

I know for a fact that the drive works, I just fired off my HP Elitebook 8460p again to make sure it was indeed still alive and it is fine. I can see it on my HP's boot menu and in the HP's disk management details. But not on my Thinkpad T420.

I used an enclosure with another drive to make sure the USB ports on my Thinkpad T420 are ok and this works fine. I also changed the drive's letters.

If the ports on the Thinkpad is fine if the external drive is fine, why then my external drive is not recognized by my T420 thru the USB port ?

This is the external drive's information as they are shown on the HP

A:Thinkpad T420 does not recognize external drive

It is probably just not getting a drive letter and you need to give it one are after initializing it. Does disk management see it?

Hello! I have a Thinkpad T420 with Windows 7. When I try to update my Intel Graphics HD driver (version 8.15.10.2538) to the one from the Lenovo support website (version 9.17.10.3347), I get the error message "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software." The Intel page tells me that I either have the wrong driver (which should not be the issue because I got it from the Lenovo driver support page) or OS version (I went ahead and tried both the 32 and 64 bit driver, to no avail) or that I do not have Intel Graphics (but I do). Is my processor simply not supported by the current update anymore? I have an Intel Core i5-2520M. Or does it maybe have issues with my NVIDIA graphics card?

N00b here. Installed Linux Mint on my lenovo thinkpad T420 a few weeks ago but could not boot into Linux. Eventually tried using Rescataux Beta on a usb. First I used the easy UEFI repair, which didn't work, so next I tried boot-repair. This worked, I could get into the OS. However, now I can't get into the bios, it just displays a black screen when I press F1 during loading. I tried doing a bios update, which appeared to go fine, but this didn't resolve the problem. I have no idea about what boot-repair does so I don't know where to look for a fix. Before I did boot-repair, I could get into BIOS but not Linux, afterwards, I could get into Linux but not into BIOS. Based on other posts, I've taken out the battery, and held the power button down for 30 seconds, and I've also sent @someotherguy a PM as I've seen suggested in other posts, but had no response.   # dmidecode 3.0

HiT420 upgraded to Win 10 and 8MB RAM installed. When I go to Shop/support/Tech Support (update drivers etc); detect my product, it comes up with the 'old' stuff ie Windows 7 64bit and the old 2MB RAM etc.  This is causing me great confusion because I am unsure about downloading updates that do not reflect my current setup with Win 10, 8MB RAM etc. Someone (from Microsoft Community) who knows more about this than me suggests the following: and I quote: "According to the screenshots, and just as you've initially stated, it shows that your system is being detected as Windows 7.  However, this will also show if the machine was manufactured originally with a Windows 7 installed.  This would mean that the specifics of the machine on the serve page is not being detected, or it does not need to detect the machine at all.  If this perception is correct, what shows up is the default or how the manufacturer produced their machine.  Perhaps, for a reason that the machine was manufactured before the launch of Windows 10. It would be the best idea to contact the manufacture about downloading the drivers that will be compatible with Windows 10, and to suggest them that an update on their page will be helpful for the users." Additionally:- Service Bridge is running on my machine.Solution Centre reports no alerts.Lenovo System Update Centre reports no updates found.Windows updates are functioning n... My laptop is overheating a lot while I'm playing games or just watching videos. I already tried to reinstall windows for one more time and first thing I did was changing maximum processor state in power options but it didn't let me type other number except 100%.  To be more clear what is my problem, here is recording of it: Please help, much appreciate, Thank You!

Hello, I rescently bought a lenovo t420 from a vendor thats not lenovo. It was find for a while, but then it got a malware virus. i did a removal of the malware. I then powered it on again but it displayed the thinkpad logo and the next screen was just black with a blinking underscore in the corner. I downloaded a diagnostic program to a usb and ran it. This is what the log says-> http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/P8H5BrGqmc/ Any help would be appreciated.

The battery on T420 was not charged, and I received a DOS message that the battery was extremely low before the system shutdown. I attached the power cord to the system and attempted to start the computer, but received the same message. So, I removed the battery and attempted to start the computer with just the power cord attached. Unfortunately, the computer did not start. I know some systems require a battery inserted even if the power cord is attached. Is this the case with T420? If not, is this a power cord issue, meaning that I have to purchase a new power cord? Is this a power cord or battery issue, or worse, a power supply controller problem? I am not a hardware guy. Any tips or suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Although my laptop has speakers, volume control buttons and sound out hook-ups for external speakers and headset, I cannot seem to be able to get any sound out of it. Under Device Manager there is no listing for any sound card. I even tried running Ubuntu just to see if I'd be able to get any sound out, but even there I could not see anything under hardware, which makes me believe there is no sound card installed. It's strange to have all the components for sounds to be played ( volume control and speakers ), but no sound card. Any advice?I am using Windows XP Pro.

Hi everyone this my first post here.

Well here's my problem my ThinkPad a31 (model type 2653-bu2)
just has no sound or modem now I know it's not a software problem
as the IBM pc doctor utility does not even recognize the hardware.

Now this problem occurred suddenly about 2 days ago just randomly
without any notice and no major events that would provoke such an
problem.

I was thinking that there is a problem with the ac'97 codec chip which would
explain the modem and sound both disappearing. But the system can still beep and boop when I want it to i.e. boot up or mashing the keyboard. Also when speakers are connected into the line out jack the beeps and boops can be heard through those speakers.

I also tried the machine without the modem daughter card just to see if anything would change to no avail.

And as a last step I did a teardown to see if there was any debris or bad areas on the
Motherboard and there was not a single oddity.

So anyone have any ideas?

My IBM ThinkPad A31 CDand MP3 playback stopped working.
No Sound, only modem and beeps.
I've updated the RelTex AC97 drivers.
When I tried to install SoundMax, the install unzips the software and then exits with a very informative "Driver Missing" message.
In the Control Panner: Sounds and Audio devices Audio tab indicates no playback device, no recording device, no midi playback devices.

Any suggestions??

My Thinkpad 390X is running Windows XP Home Edition. When I play a music CD I can barely hear it. The sound card is ess1969 from ESS Technology. All the volume controls are on high. The dates on ESS's site for their latest driver is the same date on my installed drivers. This problem isn't new. It has gone on since upgrading to XP. In searching for the past hour on the internet I've seen where this is a known problem but I've not found a solution. Does anyone out here know about how to solve this problem?

Thanks,
Don

Does the music sound kinda fuzzy... or akward... because the speakers perhaps have been blown. Old speakers go quick, attempt to hook headphones or plain speakers up to your thinkpad and see if you receive the same results...

The driver claims to be installed properly but there is no sound coming from the speakers or headphones, except, inexplicably, the beeping noise when you set it on the dock. The beep comes from the laptop speakers on undock and through my plugged-in desktop speakers on docking. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver manually, I have let Windows reinstall the driver on reboot, I have tried the alternative Dolby driver but nothing is working. It installs the driver, says it happened correctly, the on-screen volume overlay pops up when I use the volume controls, but there is no sound. The mixer shows all volume sliders at max, nothing muted, and of course I've tried toggling and untoggling all of them. muting system volume does mute the docking beep.  This just started out of the blue when I turned the machine on today. I've been using it for over a year without any issues. What do I do? how do I troubleshoot this? I tried the windows troubleshooter which was obviously no help. The Thinkpad T420 is a model 4177 QKU. Dock is a 433715 mini dock series 3. I've been using the Conexant audio driver for over a year without problems.

A:T420 no sound from speakers or audio jack.

If you right click on the speaker icon in the lower right near the time, and select "playback devices", your speakers should be shown with a green check mark; and if you right click on the speakers, you should be given the option to test etc.      What happens when you do that, do you see the speakers set as default, and can you test and hear sounds successfully?
