Sony Vaio freezes completely

Q: Sony Vaio freezes completely

I got a Sony Vaio that likes to freeze up within roughly 10-15 minutes of using it, I've been able to install Malwarebytes and Avast, as the complainant thinks it's a virus because it started happening a week ago. Whenever I run Malwarebytes, or Avast, it locks up completely. I tried diagnostics on the hard drive, and it did't find anything other than I believe it was telling me I should do a defrag, Computer freezes during analyzing process of defrag. It would also freeze during "boot-time scan" from Avast. And 7 out of 10 times if it was running decent and I need to properly shut down or restart, it will freeze on shutting down splash screen. Windows is up to date. I found a forum stating to update the SATA drivers, did that and now it just runs sluggish and eventually creates a snowball effect to where I have no choice but to force shut down. It will do all these things in Safe Mode as well.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi all,

I recently inherited a Sony Vaio PCG-FRV37 notebook computer that is completely dead, no lights, no sounds, nothing. I've checked for the obvious things like making sure the power supply is working (it does). hit the reset button many times, and some other misc quick fix ideas I picked up in other posts of simular nature. So now I pretty much have faced the idea that my motherboard must be blown, or definitely damaged (picofuse perhaps? have no idea what that is or where that would be, not sure I really even want to know)
Just not very technically inclined I guess, (probably obvious, I'm sure)
What I am mainly hoping for, is that someone could give me an idea what these kind of repairs can cost. I realize at some point for a accurate estimate, I will have to have it looked at in person, but thats not what I am looking for right now. I just want to get an idea what kind of prices I should expect to encounter, (providing the problem is the motherboard at all) can this be fixed without costing a fortune? Any suggestions will be gratefully excepted!
Thanks, Miles

A:My Sony Vaio is completely dead

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot!

Being you recently inherited this lappy, you won't know the circumstance that caused this. So you'll be flying blind til we discover what has happened and if it can be repaired for reasonable costs.
Most likey the picofuse and diods that protect the laptop voltage will need to be replaced. You'll need all the Sony doc's for this, in order to DIY. Here's a start Sony Vaio PCG-FRV37 Users Manual...
Otherwise look into Sony repair or local repair. I would at least try it myself, were I, you.

I have a sony Vaio laptop that hangs on shutdown occasionally, and will occasionally totally freeze. Funny thing is I can use alt-Tab but I can't change programs.

I also had a couple of total reboots the other day, which I attribute to bad update with a .NET Framework update. Once I stopped running a program that was using my USB/Serial adapter, the laptop stopped rebooting itself.

I am running Win XP Media
PC Tools - Spyware Dr with Anti-Virus
PC Tools Performance Tools - Registry Cleaner (which seems to find registry issues constantly)

A:Sony Vaio - Hangs and freezes

.Net Framework would not be causing freezes and reboots. But your USB adapter might. Remove it and see if the problems still persist. Be sure to blow out all fans with compressed air and make sure laptop is well ventilated from the bottom. Just to eliminate overheating.

I have a problem with my laptop lately. When I play games or watch youtube, it freezes. I thought it was the heat, so I took it to the service and did full cleanup and paste change. They said that all hardwares are looking fine, no physical damage, but laptop still crashes even when it's cold.Did malware and virus scan-clean, did triple ramtest check-clean, graphic overcloac test- no crashes. I went in safemode and opened 10 youtube videos and 3 games at once-works fine. Only suspicion left on my new battery charger because the old one died because of sudden electricity charge at my home so I bought some replacement "Europower XRT" model XRT90-190-47--SON. Here is my speccy.
Thanks in advance.

I have a vaio and it has had windows 7 64 from new, and just recently it has been freezing with no errors.

What happens: when i turn it on it starts normally and loads windows, then aftr about 1 minute it locks up as if it is trying to open something. The light on the laptop is solid orange as if it is busy doing something, but if i open task manager it says 5% cpu usage and the ram is using only 1.5 gigs.

If i leave the computer on for 1-2 hours it will un freeze and be totally normal again.

It did it once at first and i removed the program that i thought was causing it and it didnt happen again for a few days until i updated windows.

I dont have any restores from when it was working good so what can i do to fix this?

My knowledge of computers is, at best, rudimentary, so please pardon any omissions. I have a Sony VAIO VPC EE2E1E which uses Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit). Its ram is 3 GB; its HDD (SATA), 320 GB; its CPU, AMD Athlon II P320 (2.10 Ghz).

As of yesterday, it has been freezing randomly. The HDD light turns off and the keyboard, along with the touchpad, stops responding. If I'm listening to music, it repeats the same millisecond over and over. (It sounds like someone getting stangled with Auto-Tune). The screen stays on--as do the power and caps-lock lights.

Anyone have any idea what I should do?

I would try configuring the settings under power management in the control panel. Don't allow it to go into hibernation or shut down in any way on it's own. configure for never, never, never, never. uncheck the box that allows for hibernation and the box that prompts for a password upon wakening.

Also, check out blackviper website. Configure your Pc better by shutting off unessessary programs like the microsoft error reporting. Start-->run-->type in services.msc.

I am performing a full factory restore to get rid of Malware that has slowed everything down. I have done the full restore multiple times and it always hangs up at Installing Microsoft Office 2010 which is a trial version that comes with the computer from the factory. At some point an error message pops up saying the Restore cannot continue. Because of this, there are several programs from the factory that are not installed on my computer after this hiccup.

I have performed the same steps that helped WyteNyte solve his problem by using FRST to gather the information user Mark1956 requested. After 2 weeks, on a daily basis, trying to solve the problem that i will describe here, i'm asking for your help to find a solution.

I have a Sony Vaio VPCF13LOE, with Windows 7 x64 professional instaled. Windows "freezes" randomly. Sometimes i work with my laptop all day long and nothing happens, sometimes it freezes each fifteen minutes or so.

I reinstalled win7 , recently, so the computer doesn't have much software to cause conflicts, but the drivers.

Mesures (unsuccessfull) already taken:

1. Hard Drive diagnostic test (ok result)

2. Ram diagnostic test (ok result)

3. In Safe Mode the computer performs normally, not freezing, so that tells me its not a hardware problem.

4. After instalation he froze. I rebooted the laptop and went to the device manager, and noticed 3 drivers for wireless.

- The driver for Atheros (i installed after i profiled the hardware);
- The native/generic driver of Win7 for for the wireless board.
- The Win7 driver for virtual wifi (dont know what that is.

Thinking in a driver conflict, i uninstalled the native/generic driver of Win7 for for the wireless board and the Win7 driver for virtual wifi. I rebooted the laptop and after 10 minutes it froze again. Before freezing i noticed that the native/generic driver of Win7 for for the wireless board was successful... Read more

Hi freribeiro,

Sounds like a malfunctioning graphics card, but we'll explore other possibilities.

Please can you go to: Start > Type: Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System - Then scroll down to the 'event time' when the freeze occured then screenshot the events before and after it.

Hello all,

My laptop was working really well until Friday night, when I turned it on and logged on. Then when I launched up google chrome, the system froze, after a few minutes it was still frozen so I did a dirty shutdown and held down the power button.

Since then, it's been a nightmare. I've twice done a system repair which both times took about 7 hours.

Now I'm stuck with this situation, whether I start windows normally or in safe mode, I cannot get past the logon screen as it just freezes almost within a couple of seconds.

Can anyone suggest what to do? I'm not that good with the technical aspect so you may need to explain things in a bit more detail.

Many thanks

A:Sony Vaio VPCEE2E1E Freezes at Login Screen

Hello memoman and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "system repair". There's System Restore that can (hopefully) restore your computer to an earlier date/time before the problem began.

System Restore

There's Startup Repair that may fix certain problems, such as a missing or damaged MBR boot file that might prevent Windows from starting correctly.

Startup Repair

Then there are diagnostic/repair scans that can sometimes fix startup issues.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

And then there's something called a Repair Install where you try to rebuild the entire Windows 7 operating system without affecting your user accounts, personal data, programs, system drivers, etc.

Repair Install

Did you try using one or more of these tools and if so, which one(s)?

Greetings! I have a Sony Vaio VGN-BX640P notebook which I recently began having trouble accessing and browsing the web, including when trying to update various programs like virus protection etc. I also have trouble connecting to secure wireless networks and I can not connect through wire, plugged into a router, I get the "Limited Connectivity" message everytime with no access to the Internet. So, it seems I have two problems: 1) Internet Explore freezes while doing Microsoft Updates and 2) I'm having LAN issues when using wired connections and when trying to connect to secure wireless points.

In light of this, I decided to completely strip and reformat the drive; I re-wrote the MBR, reformatted the drive completely and did a fresh/clean install of Windows XP Pro w/SP3. I also downloaded to disk(using a different machine) the network card drivers from Sony's website and installed both the LAN card and wirless card drivers on the Sony. (I still have other drivers to download and install but they are irrelevant to the current issues) Currently this is all I have on the machine, no other software or virus protection. I connected to Windows/Microsoft Update (through an unsecure wireless connect as the wired LAN connection still gave me Limited Connectivity error) to get the latest SP3 updates to finish the installation and I ran into the same issue as #1 above - Microsoft Update just sits there and churns endlessly never giving back a list of updates needed t... Hello all, this is my first post here, but you all seem so very friendly and helpful so thank you for providing such a welcoming atmosphere!

My wife has a Sony Vaio laptop that seems to work just fine (and she also has taken very good care of it over the years) but it seems to occasionally, and more regularly hang or freeze when in use. It is typically within 10-20 minutes after it has been started. Either everything will freeze, or applications will stop responding and the mouse will still move, but it is just a loading circle icon when hovering over the start menu.

This also tends to happen when the computer goes to sleep and then is woken back up.

Hi there,

I bought a Sony Vaio VPCZ227GG almost 2 months back and its been running perfectly until the last week. There have been no hardware updates, system installs etc. only the recommended Sony Vaio Care driver udpates.

I will be using the laptop for a while and then it will just crash. The laptop stays on the screen it was on before the crash but the mouse, keyboard, basically everything is dead. The only way to cycle it is to power down.

I have attached all the files as per the BSOD posting instructions and would really appreciate any help or guidance.

System Spec
Windows 7-64 bit Came preinstalled
Intel? Core? i7-2640M Processor 2.80 GHz with Turbo Boost up
8GB Ram
256 SSD Drive
Intel Onboard Graphics
AMD Radeon External Graphics via Media Dock
Full Retail
Hardware and OS less than 2 months old.

A:Sony Vaio VPCZ227GG Freezes with no errors, event log entries or dumps

No DMP file in the upload, try this method.

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ18E which is experience some major problems at the moment.
Firstly, I get 'nvlddmkm' problem about every 10mins or thereabouts which causes the screen to lock, go fuzzy, blank the screen and then revive and become functional again.

This can eventually, or straight away, lead to a total fuzzy screen lock-up where I simply have to hit the off button to restart the computer.
This is also interspersed by various other screens such as those below; mixed pages, blue screen, which seem to have come from the Matrix.

The computer is about four years old and the front left of it can get very hot.
Is it just knackered?
Would a re-format and re-install do the trick?

Any ideas or solutions?

So my laptop has started to freeze a minute or two after start up even though it was working fine a few hours ago. I was sat talking to a friend over facebook chat when my laptop started 'screaming' with a really high pitched noise, I had to turn it off to stop it.

When I restarted it and booted it back up it said it was defragging something (it was a while ago and I cant remember what it said) after that I logged in and now it freezes after a couple of minuets.

I've tried system restoring it and using the built in memory repair and it still wont work. However once I disabled all the non microsoft services it boots up and doesnt freeze untill I try to open a program.

I can start it in safe mode but thats about it. I've spent the past couple of hours searching for a solution but can't find one, so ay help will be much appritiated

(I'm using my Xbox to access the internet at the moment but I can turn on my laptop incase anyone has a possible solution)

Hi - Hopefully someone can help..

Screen keeps freezing (and sometimes black screen or laptop just shuts off), not sure if it would be considered a crash because the hard drive activity light will keep blinking. When it freezes the mouse doesn't move and I can't input anything in the keyboard (doesn't show on screen). I am still able to turn off the display with the "display off" button and the num lock/caps lock/scroll lock lights can still be turned on/off. I've tried restoring the hard drive and reinstalling the OS but I'm not able to get far due to the freezing problem. This is the third time this has happened. The two previous times I have been able to restore everything, but this time i cannot. During the restoration/reformatting process, the screen froze but I pressed enter when the hard drive stopped spinning and it was able to complete the reformatting and restart by itself. The freezing problem however, still exists. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out!

I have the exact same problem as this guy ( http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/944465-solved-sony-vaio-screen-keeps.html ).. except my laptop is SONY VAIO VPCF1 .. I have reinstalled win7 (5times) and win8 (consumer preview once).. so its definately not software issue.. its hardware.. but I can't figure out what is wrong...

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

It seems to be overheating so try blowing out any dust at the fan outlet using a can of air, or use a straw or similar and blow through that.

Also try using it on a flat table or desk if you aren't already doing so.

So, this is what happened:

1. A pendrive infected with virus was inserted (unknowingly)

2. Malwarebytes scanned and removed them. After removing asked me to restart, which I did.

3. I remember some system32 folder files were shown as infected but I dont remember exactly the names.

4. After reboot, I got vaio splash screen and then just a black screen. Nothing else!

What I have tried so far:

1. Tried the "unplug battery and power plug, then press the power button for a minute or two and then connect just the power plug (not battery) and boot" thing, didnt work.

2. Tried the assist button. But the first option named "start troubleshooting (recovery)" option restarts the laptop and again after the vaio splash screen, I get the black screen.

PS: The only way to get to see the 'boot into safe mode, network mode, etc" options is through that assist button. It doesnt work! I can however access the bios options.

3. Tried booting ubuntu live from a flash drive and it worked successfully. However, when I tried to open the windows paritions within the ubuntu live usb drive, it said they were "unclean drives"and failed to mount them.

4. So, I tried the Bitdefender rescue cd and scanned the whole system. It found 1 infected file (although it was more like a potentially unwanted program or something, not a malware or serious virus.)

5. Also, tried a windows 8 installation disk but it too would not boot. Tried a windows install... Read more

Hi Folks, This is my first post. so go easy on me;-)

I switched on my PC after 1 year of no use(apple imac distracted me for a while).
The message "operating system not found" appears when it boots up. I put in the Sony Recovery disk, bit it could not read it. As Sony didn't provide a spare copy of XP, how do I get back up and running? Do I have to change the motherboard battery? any advice much appreciated.

I Hope you Christmas is Merry and peaceful.

A:Sony Vaio Desktop PCV-RX305 Windows XP now missing, no disks supplied by Sony

Call Sony Tech Support if you are the registered owner or buyer. They will provide a disk set for a small fee ($27) for six years after purchase, or until they run out.
Your only other choice is to buy the disk online at some place like ebay, or buy Windows Home (still available for $82) or Windows XP Professional for $135.
The motherboard battery should not be bad, but if it is, you can get a replacement (CR2032) at Wal-Mart ofr $3.67 or on eBay for $2.58.
The recovery disk may be good, and it is your optical drive that has gone bad.

Hi Guys
After Having Liquid Spilled on my Screen, it was not working for few hours,
then i took to local repair and they did it worked, so everything is working fine. However i doubt that, when i press Power Button, it tooks about 7-8 seconds to start loading SONY LOGO and then WINDOWS 7 comes up, as i remember, Before it got spilled, and prev time, on pressing power button, it was loading LOGO immediately max 1-1.5 sec, i'm afraid.

This is happening at shutdown as well, after pressing shutdown, firstly a Black screen appear for a few seconds and then my vaio is shutting down., I guess there is something changed in Bios, maybe by Local repairers.

Please be advised, Thanks, Levan.

A:SONY VAIO Slows At Start Up, Before SONY Logo Loads.

If I'm understanding correctly, your Vaio is taking about 7-8 seconds longer to start. At shutdown you're getting a black screen and it's taking a few seconds longer than what you're used to. But is everything else in between (opening programs, searching on the internet, etc) working OK?

If it is, my first reaction is to say don't worry about it. I have a VPCEB47GM and it takes about 10 seconds for the Sony logo to appear and about 50 seconds total to be able to use Windows 7. On shutdown I usually get a black screen for about 5 seconds but the rest of the shutdown process takes about 30 seconds to finish.

Do you know what your BIOS settings were before you took the machine into the repair shop? If you do, you could compare them to how the BIOS is set now. But if you don't know how the BIOS was originally configured, I wouldn't be changing anything.

This is the first time contacting Sony support. After waiting for over 1/2 hour, finally a person comes online. I spend another 20 minutes giving him name, address, etc and then I find out that it is "paid support".

After an online chat and trying to contact Sony support, maybe the only solution is to trash the Sony Notebook and buy a Dell. Does Dell still provide support?
The problem is "no sound from the computer". I have spent 4 hrs this morning downloading and checking for updates to all the sound drivers.

Any suggestions?

A:No sound Sony Vaio and No Sony Support

I hear the same complaints from Dell users on the Dell forum and from users of other brands. They are all equally lousy on support or want you to pay for it. e.g. "software" support on a Dell is separate from any warrnty or maintenance contract which only covers hardware. You get "free" software support for the first 30 days only.

Back to the sound problem. We need more info to try and assist. e.g. what sound do you have (if you know), etc. You didn't fill out all the needed System Specs. What have you tried? e.g. have you checked the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound panel to see if your "speakers" (sound card) is set as the default playback device?

A:Computer slow at all times. Ocassionaly freezes. Clicking on start often freezes system completely.

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so. While we are working on your HijackThis log, please: Reply to this thread; do not start another! Does anyone have any experience of the above computer?
I have one that won't boot into windows, I have gone through the recovery process and gets part way into booting into windows and then reboots itself. I have tried reloading Windows Xp on its own and again it reboots at the same spot.
I have fitted some new memory but this made no difference, this model seems to be a bit of a hybrid as it uses some laptop parts and some desktop parts. I suspect repairing it will be expensive, does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried removing the memory that you added to see if that helps?

Hi ya'll, I am having an issue doing a bunch of stuff on my computer ever since I installed a fresh version of Windows 7 on my Sony Vaio VGN-SZ670N.  It used to run Vista from the factory.
Once I installed the fresh copy of Windows 7 all the SONY functions that came with the computer have gone to <expletive>!!
I keep tapping my mouse button when i am typing thus making the cursor go random places and my text to appear in these random places.
I can't adjust the brightness of my screen in control panel power options.
My Fn keys are not working..
The thumbprint fingerprint reader doesn't work.
I have gone to the Sony site and there's just a plethora of stuff there to download and I really don't know what needs to be downloaded for the full functionality of the laptop or even if it's the right downloads since I am now running Windows 7 and all that "bloatware" was made to run on Vista?
^^ this link is all the drivers exe's and what not for my specific laptop running Vista.
I know I need Shared Library and Setting Utility Series Software These are the two links for the Windows 7 versions of it:
I am very confused and do... Read more

Go to Sony eSupport, select the version of Windows 7 you installed (32-bit or 64-bit) and install all of the drivers listed there.

Recently, my computer has been using way more memory than it should be using. When I first boot up and just have a couple applications open its already using 4 gb. And since this has been happening I've noticed significant drops in performance, especially playing games.

I took screenshots of the amount of RAM it said I was using and then the list of the all the processes it said I had running. I added up all of the list and it was 2,137,406 kb when on the performance window it said I was using 5.46 gb so I don't know where that additional 3.36 gb is coming from.

Hi Everyone....Happy New Year!

My Vaio started going to safe mode after "recovering from a serious" problem. I got the dreaded blue screen telling me the video display hardware/software was acting up.

I was not able to boot up without Cntrl-Alt-Delete!

Now, she will not boot up one last time so I can dump my HD of some much needed data.

Is there any way to tell if I can replace the ATI 9200 card or....is this one terminal?

I need one more boot. For now, it will not even light up the screen.

Thanks! Brent Coleman

Setup cannot continue press any key to exit.

If you do it just reboots right back to this point.

The owners of the computer tell me that on the harddrive is the restore.
Can't get to this.

Or what should I do or try with this.

I recently installed a WD Caviar SE 160 GB Hard Drive into my 6 year old Sony Vaio PCV-RX560. I removed the shunt per the directions for a single drive and the BIOS for the hard Drive is on auto. I was able to utilize the orig. system recovery software to reinstall XP home. My problem is this: according to the properties option for the C drive, the size of the hard drive installed is 8GB. I believe this is a minimum defaultsize. Does anyone know what to do to fully utilize the new 160GBHD. I hope this makes sense - My computer skills are, to say the least, lacking.

I just got a sony vaio from a friend of a friend. I glady accpeted it because my motherboard in my regular laptop has a short in it somewhere so until I raise the funds to replace it I wanted to use this one. Well... the laptop is perfect for my needs but she got it from an international student who is no longer in the country. The laptop displays both Chinese and English languages. Thankfully the system files are in English.
Anywho, the reason for this is because I want to factory reset the system. I am a admin on the system but I cannot access the partition for the reset. I tried using the edit boot options (f10) but all I get a input prompt I do not know what to do from there.
[ [/no execute=optin
partition: 3
hard disk: 75024967
I have also tried the recovery software but can only revert to a previous point.
Please advise me.
Sys Specs:
Sony Vaio VPCCW21fx
OS: Win 7 (not sure if this is ultimate or not)
There are three partitions one has no assigned letter. I think this is where that factory reset is located. I have included a screen grab of that.

A:my pc vaio sony

Operating System not found means hard drive error. Some spots on the HD cannot be read during bootup.

Here's how to boot up your system using Linux to rescue data:

Go here to download Ubuntu 10.04 ( There is a newer version, but I am going by my existing setup, so follow along and choose 10.04 ) http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid/ Save the iso file.

Then download ImgBurn from here: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Install ImgBurn and run it.

Choose "Write Image to Disc"

At the top of the Imgburn window, where it says "Source" click on the folder with maginfying glass icon; Then navigate to where you saved the ISO file.

Then click on the bottom area of the window depicting hd write to CD.

That should create the CD.

Now you want to boot with the CD on your PC. Check your BIOS so that it chooses to boot using the CD first. You are looking for the Boot menu, boot priority, or something along that line.

Once you boot into Ubuntu, pull down the Places pull down menu. Choose the ## GB Filesystem. That would be your hard drive. You will be able to see all folders in your drive. Now copy off the files you want to a USB memory stick.

To start i apologize if this in in the wrong section.

Right i have just signed up after hours looking on the internet to still be out of luck on fixing my laptop.

I got a 2nd hand Sony VAIO (PCG-71311M) from a friend, so i was in the stage of cleaning all the data off from the laptop, selected "restore factory settings", but now everytime i turn the laptop on i get a black screen with "Operating System Not Found_".

My friend did not have any form of recovery disk or Windows 7 disk, only otherthing apart from the laptop itself is the charger.

What can i do to get the laptop back up and running? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Edit: To add i have clicked the F10 key until i get "Edit Boot Options" clicked Enter and then get the VAIO Care Rescue screen. I have try to start recovery but it gets to 6% and then stops.

Recovery typically doesn't work at all without the recovery discs.

At this point, I'd suggest purchasing the retail version of the OS of your choice, and installing fresh.
