I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just bought a brand new legion Y540. I don't know how to access the advanced BIOS menu, the menu I can currently access has very little settings. Anyone managed to access the "Debug Bios"? I saw someone give a weird solution for the Y740 which was to click on every key + Fn on the keyboard then click F10 but it sadly didn't work for my Y540.

hi everyone..  this isnt so much as a question but rather i found out the solution already and thought id best share..  i recently just updated my bios to the latest (not sure the exact version now) and got stuck in an automatic repair boot loop... tried running through all the available windows options except resetting my pc because i didnt want to loose all my files etc...  i ended up noticing that the efi boot order was wrong in the bois and my ssd was the second one down...  i fixed this by highlighting my ssd and using the f6 key to move it up one..  then saved and my computer is back to normal..  hope this helps someone or prevents a lengthy support process.. have a good daypete

I just figured out after a few days of trying to use the auto update utility, that the reason its failing to function properly (or at all) is because in my bios there is no Model or Serial number. They just say INVALID. I've seen similar things online but none of the tools available mention anything other than Thinkpads and Thinkcentre. I figure this would be a really easy issue to fix if I could just get the right tool. Any help would be appreciated.  And I tried calling in and they are so confused about what I meant, so I dont think thats going to be an option. Guy was telling me I needed to uninstall and reinstall the lenovo driver auto update utility.... That was the first thing I did 5 days ago when this whole thing started. I need level 4 tech support now lol.

Good Day
I have a View Sonic G90f 19in monitor and is about 8 or 9 yeasrs old.
I have a Nvidia 8800GTS that is about 2 years old.
Lately I have been having problems with the monitor turning Off and then back On some times once in a while and sometime continuously.really no pattern to when it flicks on and off.
The Drivers are up to date for the V card.
I checked all the connections and everythings seems OK but still problem exist.
Settings are at 1280 x 1024 75 HTz 32 bit color.
I will open the cover and jiggle the V card but not sure if this would do anything.
Has anyone experienced anything like this?

A:Monitor flicking On and Off

If the problem only started recently and the monitor is 9 years old, it's likely it's dying. The only to know for sure is to swap in another monitor and see if it does the same thing.

This morning I tried to start WOW and it started up fine and I saw the log on screen and then it flicked back to my desktop - every time I tried to alt tab or switch to WoW, it would immediately flick back to windows. Have you ever seen this and any ideas how I can fix the problem?

A:WoW Flicking to Windows

something is stealing focus from wow and causing it to monimize.

Try running the game in windowed mode and it should stop. But then you have to figure out what program is doing it.

Hello, and thanks in advance for advice. A few months ago, my Outlook mail file was corrupted (a fairly common thing, I hear), so the other night I finally decided to repair the application with my original Office disc. After working a while, the computer stopped responding. Turned the system off, since then I get nothing on the screen, black screen. BIOS doesn't run, which means no Vista. System will not boot from recovery discs freshly received from HP, put in a new HDD with same results, system will not boot from disc even with HDD unplugged. Have tested monitor off laptop, works fine. Have removed all extras, including sound card, unplugged disc drives, modem, everything extra. Have re-seated all plugs, cleared the CMOS according to instructions, removed and re-set the battery on the motherboard, removed all DIMMs (replaced one to attempt a boot.) I am at a total loss at this point, resorting to y'all...and prayer!.

Again, thanks!

i got a new laptop a month or so ago, but since using it the screen is doing my head in. it keeps flicking from filling the whole screen to having a black bar about 1 or 2 inches wide on either side and everything on the screen then fills only that area, not even the cursor can go in the black sides.

my tabs on google crome also get smaller, for example, the twitter tab when the screen is big will say twitter/home with a little gap after and when it is small only twitter/ho will fit. it happens constantly no matter if i'm touching the laptop or not. the screen will go back then swap size. however, if i'm typing it will carry on during the balck screen that's on for like half a second, but the cursor will go back to being in the middle. sometimes it can be like 15 mins between size changes, but sometimes it like happens about 10 times within 30 seconds.

i checked the screen resolution but when i change that the font just gets bigger, and thats not the problem.i get a message each time it changes saying...

"optimal resolution notification. this is not the optimal screen resolution for the clone dispaly configuration. the optimal resolution is 800 x 600. click this notification for more information" but when i change it to this only the font size changes.

I'm at my mum's house and I've decided to try out MapleStory on her old laggy computer. She recently updated her internet, but it still runs terribly slow.
When I download MapleStory (client on the nexon website), everything downloads perfectly fine and within 2 hours, it'll be finished. Installing it takes time, but it ends up installing everything perfectly fine (including the finishing bits when you run the game).
It runs fine and I can log in and select a server and channel, but the moment it goes to the 'character selection' screen, the whole game starts flicking around and it makes it impossible to click 'back'.
If I select a server with no characters, the images stay fine, but if I go to create a character, the images begin to flick again. (Oblviously has something to do with the characters...but what)?
MapleStory doesn't close or anything, but I can't exit it. I can, but only by the task manager. Just want to know what's going on and if anyone knows how, how to fix the problem.
Help please... D:
(I'm kinda dumb with computers, so anything you need to know about this one, ask me and I'll put it up...don't wanna put everything up and make myself look even stupider).

My monitor is just spazzing out, and I have no idea why. In fact I know it's not the monitor that's the problem because I switched my tower with my brother's tower to see what would happen (using the same monitor), and it works perfectly fine.

Just so you guys have some background...

My computer decided to crash at one point whilst I was playing music and using MSN messenger, not even letting me bring up task manager using ctrl+alt+delete. I had to manually restart the computer, but when the startup screen came up it had a really strange graphics issue where there were sketchy lines running through the screen, and when the DOS-looking screen came up (i.e. when checking if there's anything in the CD drive) all the characters were jumbled and scattered. What's worse, Windows didn't even start up...the screen just stayed blank after the Windows load screen. I attempted Safe Mode and the same thing occurred, so I'm guessing it is a hardware issue?

Just to be sure I tried putting my computer through system recovery with the disk that was provided with the computer, and surprisingly it did take me to Windows...the part where it starts checking for hardware drivers and goes through all the stuff that it does when you recover the system...however when it said it had to test the keyboard and mouse, and the screen may flicker for a few seconds my monitor started off with its very own issue. I waited at least 10 minutes, and it didn't stop.

I am beyond frustrated with this. Intel MB: D945GTP AAC97837-300. Bought this CTL pc that has W7 Ultimate 64 (from the properties screen). I believe that it was upgraded from XP. The problem is that it sits with a black screen and the flashing upper left cursor for 3 minutes until it starts doing the normal W7 loading, which goes off smoothly, and works just fine from then on. I believe that the guy that installed the W7 has done these successfully before, but I wonder if something went wrong with the install.

It has only onboard video and no additional cards of any kind. Iíve tried many things. Iíve tried memory sticks individually. The cmos battery is over 3 volts. Iíve tried disabling all boot options but the HD and the same problem.

My neophitism makes me think that either the bios can't find W7 due to a problem in where it is looking or a possibility the HD has a problem. Do I need to do a test like chkdsk first to make sure the HD is ok? One idea I was given was to do F8 select the HD and that would have the bios look for a boot sector. Problem there is that F8 takes the 3 minutes also and just brings up the safe mode screen. Is there that option in that screen or somewhere else for this?

The repair options via system repair have done nothing.

When I put in an install disc and tried the repair option it gave me a message that was saying something about how the disc was not proper to repair my system. I have used this disc successfully recently for a diffe... Read more

A:BIOS blinking cursor for 3 minutes before W7

Not a problem I have come across before, so lets start with a run of Disc Check and then run FRST to see what is on the system and view the error logs.

Disk Check
Click on Start then type cmd in the search box. A menu will pop up with cmd at the top, right click on it and select Run as Administrator. Another box will open, at the prompt type chkdsk /r and hit Enter. Note: you must include a space between the k and the /
You will then see the following message:
chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
Type Y for yes, and hit Enter. Then reboot the computer.
chkdsk will start when Windows begins loading again. Let all 5 phases run and don't use or turn off the computer. (The chkdsk process may take an hour or more to finish, if it appears to freeze this is normal so do not interrupt it. On drives above 500GB it can take several hours.)
When the Disk Check is done, it will finish loading Windows.
Then follow this guide to find the chkdsk log. NOTE: You need to do the search for wininit not chkdsk.
Windows 7 Disk Check log

Once the log is in view then click on Copy in the right hand pane and select "Copy details as text".
You can then right click on the message box on this forum and select Paste and the log will appear, add any further information asked for and then click on Submit/Post Quick Reply and your done.

I have a HP Pavilion dv7 laptop that seems to power up okay but has a black screen with no cursor.  The fan runs for a few seconds and blinking lights show near the cap lock button and on the upper right of the keyboad.  I pulled the hard drive and tested it ok and tried moving the memory around with no luck.  I also tried the reset trick by turning off and holding the power switch for one minute.  I searched this forum and anyplace on the internet that I could find and all I could gather was that this is no uncommon but nobody seemed to have an answer.   Could the cmos battery cause this ?  I always have a a battery available to check but this is a differant style and I will have to order one.  This computer is about two years old and running Vista.

I have a 4 year old Compac CQ61-410US Notebook. The flicking problem happens in Chrome and Internet Explorer and if I play the games that came with the computer. When I hit enter, space bar and other things it will stop for a while but then it is back. Interesting note it has not done it once since I have been on this site!
The noise is new  and it make me very nervous. No sound should be coming from this thing insides.  Well maybe a little but I do not want to hear it running this loud. Is my hard drive about to die?
On a personal note I am as old as dirt and every thing I buy I have to think will I live to use it. Should I just go and have everything downloaded to a new computer or is this pain something I can take of? I have had some other problems and have been able to fix it with help from this fabulous site

A:Flicking on screen and noise in my laptop

First of all, welcome to BC. See, it's a great site, your problem has gone away already !
On a more serious note, what sort of noise is it ?  Sort of a fan whirring noise, or is there an element of click to it ?  There are three things I would do as a precaution / check.
First off, back up my data - work, photos, music, that sort of stuff. Depending on how much you have, you can use anything from a USB stick to an external USB hard drive. But back it up, just in case you do have a hard drive problem.
Secondly, run chkdsk /r on you hard drive. You do this by opening the Command prompt which you will find at 'Start / Programs / Accessories'. RIGHT click on 'Command prompt' and select 'Run as administrator' in the drop-down box that appears. This will produce a black window with white text. Just type 'chkdsk /r' (Note - there is a space between 'chkdsk' and '/r') and press enter. You will then get a message saying it cannot run, do you wish to run at next boot Y / N. Type 'Y' (= Yes) and press enter, then reboot your computer. Chkdsk will run when it starts up.
Dependiing on the size of your hard drive and the speed of your processor, this may well take upwards of an hour, don't turn your computer off until it has finished. It will then tell you if there are any faulty sectors on your hard drive.
Thirdly I would download, install and run a little program called 'Speccy', you can get it here :

I just purchased 2 new hard drives and a new copy of Windows 10 for my desk top set up. I removed my old hard drives and put the new ones in with the intention of installing the operating system. However, when I start up my new system my monitor only displays picture for a couple of minutes before it goes blank and flicks between HDMI and Analog not displaying any picture.

What I have tried:

Using a different brand monitor with a different socket into my graphics card.

Using a different graphics card.

Using different ports for my graphics card in the board.

Removing and cleaning graphics card and RAM.

I even got desperate and changed my system back to what I used a few days ago and my monitor still plays up.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get my picture back?

But when Im using it, suddenly it starts flicking and get error message that pc went to wrong. It's been two weeks. Strongly I think this one has problem and I don't wanna repair anymore. Because as you can see, I requested several times to repair this notebook. I'm really sick of it. I really don't think this one has virus. Thus I don't wanna install any program to wasting my time. I hope that you understand my situation. Thus I wanna refund or change new one. If you refund I would be more happier than change new one happy. Because after changing new one, same problem, I won't call you guys again. I will definitely buy other brand. It was my first time to buy Dell laptop. Really disappointed. I hope other people won't make same problem like me. I used to use other brand and never had problem.

Per Dell policy;* A refund is only possible if requested inside the FIRST 30 days from the original invoice date.* Any system exchange after the first 30 day will be a refurbished, not new.At this point, all we can do on this Forum is troubleshoot the flicker issue. If we diagnose that hardware is at fault, you would then contact Technical Support to arrange either parts replacement or refurbished system exchange.* Reinstall our Intel HD graphics driver* Restart the laptop when finished* Reinstall our Nvidia GTX 960M graphics driver* Restart the laptop when finished and retest

Hi all, I have 2 HP nx9020 notebooks which i have formatted and installed windows xp pro on. both of the hard drives when connected to other machines via usb can be browsed to and seem to work perfectly. but when you try and boot to them they get past BIOS and just stop with a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner.

I have tried reformatting and reinstalling - doesnt work

I have tried connecting to a different machine and trying to boot from them - doesnt work

I have connected to a different machine and tried repairing using windows recovery console - doesnt work

I have used a windows xp CD origianl disk and a different boot disc to try and boot from the machines - the boot disk goes to the flashing cursor and the win pro install disc starts to work and hangs when it gets to kernell.dll

I have seen an old thread on here in regards to this but pretty much everything ive tried is not working... ive replaced the memory, tried different machines etc and as its 2 HDD ive convinced its a Software error.... my thoughts are its related to the MBR or boot.ini an area im not strong with... ive any advice or help would be appreciated...

OK, I've exhausted my slightly higher-than-average computer knowledge, and can't even get IN the darned thing to see what's wrong :/ Dell XPS400 running Windows XP (SP2)Loads BIOS then goes to blank screen with blinking cursor in up. left-hand corner, and that's it.I can get into set-up, and the boot menu.Boot device menu options are : onboard SATA HD, onboard/usb CDROM device, system setup, hard drive diagnostics, and Boot to Utility Partition. What I've done so far:Ran "hard drive diagnostics" from Boot menu, said everything's fine. (HD is Samsung SP2504C)boot to utility partition = "utility partition not available"Boot from XP installation disk. It's a friend's computer, & admin password not known (never used it day-to-day, nothing's pw protected, so they don't remember it), so I cannot "repair" from the XP disk.Everything I see online assumes I can run in safe-mode, which I can't even LOCATE at this point. I know my Windows-repairing skills have gone down the toilet, since I'm a Mac and have been for 2 yrs now but really, where the heck did it go?! Anyway, I guess we can wipe it and reinstall, but is there a way to check that it's actually a corrupted file that's the problem, not some hardware that's dead, so I don't waste my time? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Suddenly the PC goes through bios screen, not letting me use keys to enter set up, etc. Then just shows a black screen with flashing cursor, no dos access, nothing works.

Hard drive is vibrating so I assume it is working. Reseated and cleaned all contacts wtih eraser and lintless cloth afterwards to remove any bits. Reseated electrical connections to drives.

Can't figure out how to get heat sink off this cpu to check that connection. Electricity on, fans on, etc. It was dusty and this was all blown out.

Any ideas about how to isolate problem?

Dear all,

I just recently installed Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and my relevant drivers for Dell.
All was working fine until these problems occured.

1) At the taskbar, if there are more than one tab (for instance Windows folder) we can usually click it and select the tab we wish to go to. But for my case, the "Tab Screen" simply disappears after I click it once, so I can't choose the folder I wish to go.

2) For any browsers (windows browser, chrome, internet explorer, more) whenever I press the back button it simply reverts back to the page I was at (sort of like someone pressed forward the moment I press back).

Hope to receive help.
If any specifications are needed it'd be much appreciated if you can tell me how to give you guys the logs.

I have a Precision M6500. It does not have any Hard Drives on it. BIOS is A04
Default BIOS setting has SATA at RAID.
I can change SATA = Disabled and it will boot to BIOS
I can change SATA = ATA and it will boot to BIOS
I change SATA = AHCI, it pretends to boot to BIOS but gives me blinking cursor. Aborting boot with F2 or F12 also gives blinking cursor.
I open back panel, remove CMOS battery, plug it back in again, laptop will boot up. Unfortunately it boots into SATA = RAID setting.
How the heck do I change it to AHCI so I can put a Hard Drive in start using the darn thing? I see I'm not the only one who has this problem of blinking cursor, however in my case, it is not random. It only happens after I change SATA = AHCI, not otherwise.

I'll start with the background info:
I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 with Windows XP and Ubuntu installed. Previously, GRUB would boot up and allow me to select which OS to run.
A day or two ago, I was using StumbleUpon and listening to iTunes when my computer froze, minimized to the desktop, and showed a window saying there was a virus. Half the icons on my desktop were missing and I didn't have control of the mouse. I performed a hard shutdown. When I restarted the computer, it went past the Dell splash screen and sat at a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left hand.

What I've done so far:
-Tried removing the battery and starting the laptop.
-Removed the hard drive and started the laptop, receiving a "missing hard drive" error, replacing the hard drive and starting the laptop.
-Running off a live Ubuntu CD.

I've had the most luck running of the live cd. Originally, I couldn't get the windows partition to mount, but after trying (and failing) to get GRUB to install, one of the commands must have freed it up and now it mounts properly (in the live environment). However, my computer still won't boot past that blinking cursor.

I opened up the Boot.ini file and everything seems in order, however I still get an error when trying to mount the Ubuntu partition (but I think I can worry about that later).

So, since I can open up that partition and browse around my files just fine, why won't the darn thing boot up? Could GRUB ... Read more

The ubuntu LiveCD should have a "boot from hard drive" option. If that works, you could "re-do" grub from the command line using the "sudo" do allow for adminstrative commands.

As to the cause, I would check the bios for anywhere it would show CPU temperature.

After cleaning out my system in this thread, I was asked to come over here to help solve my issue:

After I removed the bad fake partition, and did the bootrec stuff. After rebooting the computer and completing the BIOS checks, I was left with a blinking "_" cursor, it just blinks. No hard drive activity from the light on the front of the case. I booted into recovery CD again and did the bootrec stuff again, and the same result. I also used the Startup Repair on the recovery CD, and it did say it found issues, and supposidely fixed them, but still have the blinking cursor.

I decided I needed to at least get it up and running for internet browsing, so I installed Fedora Linux as a dual boot like I have done in the past. Fedora works great, but when I select Windows 7 at the boot screen, I still have the blinking "_" cursor.

After running some bootrec commands in that thread, I lost my GRUB dual boot screen, and just back to the blinking "_" cursor after the BIOS screen.

I also noticed when running /rebuildBCD, it says "Total Identified Windows Installations : 0", which is odd, because when first loading Windows recovery console, it shows my Windows 7 Ultimate install on the list.

Can anyone suggest anything? We can start from the beginning if it is easier. Thanks.

A:Windows 7 No boot, Blinking Cursor after BIOS loads

Hi mechjames,

Not sure of your knowledge level but you seem to know enough to bounce from OS to OS when needed so I'll continue from that...

As it's the Windows partition and OS you care to save let me point you to a few things that might help right off, if you are comfortable with the tools. (Not sure if your a shell or GUI guy so bear with me.)

Fixing grub or grub2 isn't that hard but a few steps we can get into later if needed. Are you using a live cd/dvd to boot Linux? Are you able to use gparted or even fdisk to see what's going on with the drive?

A tool I have used from Linux to fix a HDD issue is called ntfsfix. If not part of your current tools its available using your usual installer, apt, dpkg, synaptic, etc.

As a last resort you can reinstall Windows using the upgrade option so you save all your data and profiles so keep that in mind.

In linux can you mount the drives or partitions you want to fix/save?

Have you used linux to backup/copy the data you don't want to lose?

Let us know how any of the above goes so we can proceed.

Had a BSOD (after a failed Comodo firewall install) and Vista couldn't automatically repair. I can get to the desktop but the cursor is frozen and I don't think the keyboard is working either. Any suggestions on how to fix?
With hindsight I would probably have tried to select a previous restore point from the options from automatic repair but I don't know how to get back to it. Is it possible to select a restore point from the BIOS? The arrow keys work then.
PS - I don't have a Vista recovery disc

During boot you press the F8 key over and over till the Advanced boot options apears. From there boot into 'Safe Mode with Networking'. Once in safe mode then try the previous restore point.

Could GRUB be installed in the inaccessi... Read more

So if you boot from the Ubuntu CD (not the partition on your drive) does everything work fine?

Hi guys,  I hope someone can help...my daughters HP laptop-Pavillion two in one with touch screen is spazzing out!  It has anti virus installed and this is not picking up any viruses.  When she uses it, whether in Minecraft, Sims or Netflix etc, it begins flicking violently.  It will randomly open and close files but mostly it brings up the calendar in the bottom right corner and flicks it open and closed while scrolling through the months and days violently and on it's own. down the righthand side of the screen, round blurs flick up and down.  The cursor moves all over the screen and we have no control.  It does eventually stop...for a bit...then off it goes again.  I videoed it and tried to upload but its too large. This laptop has not been dropped and is only six months or so old.  My other daughter has the same device with the same anti virus and has no issues with it.Please help.
